Looks like Tui is coming back
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 at 1:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Marques Tuiasosopo watched practice on the field with the Raiders Thursday at their organized team activity, renewing friendships and spending a lot of time with quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo.
Coach Lane Kiffin said he couldn’t comment about the visit, but said some information could be forthcoming later in the day.
Tuiasosopo was the No. 3 quarterback for the New York Jets last season behind Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens, signing a one-year contract after leaving the Raiders as a free agent.
If Tuiasosopo were indeed to return, it would initially be to compete for the No. 3 quarterback job behind JaMarcus Russell and Andrew Walter.
It’s worth noting, however, that the current offensive system run by the Raiders is much more line with his skills than the play-action dropback systems instituted by Norv Turner and later Art Shell.
Walter is functional running rollout plays, but in some instances _ like one Thursday in which he didn’t have the mobility to escape a rush by rookie Trevor Scott _ simply doesn’t have the athleticism to turn a broken play into a big gain. During one 7-on-7 drill, Walter did have two nice touchdown strikes to Javon Walker on a fade route and Drew Carter on a post pattern.
Tuiasosopo’s issues are twofold _ he simply may not be good enough of a pure passer to be an NFL quarterback, and there were whispers that after Rich Gannon’s departure he did not prepare hard enough. He had several poor preseason appearances in games against vanilla defenses.
More OTA snapshots:
– The Raiders are stressing the fact that safeties Gibril Wilson and Michael Huff are flexible enough to alternate, but it seems clear that most of the time, Wilson will be in the box and Huff will be playing deep safety. Wilson said as much in an interview session with the media.
– Wilson sat out Thursday’s practice with a quad injury which Kiffin said is not serious. In his place, Huff played strong safety with the first team and Rashad Baker free safety.
– Maybe the defensive backs are media shy. Through the rookie minicamp and now two OTA practices, not a single defensive back has broken on a ball and made an interception. Kiffin said DeAngelo Hall had two interceptions at Wednesday’s practice.
Linebacker Thomas Howard nearly took one back the other way in a red zone 7-on-7 drill, breaking up a telegraphed pass by Walter intended for Darren McFadden.
– Defensive end Derrick Burgess and running back LaMont Jordan did not attend the voluntary workout. Neither did cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who isn’t eligible to practice until he signs his tender. Kickers Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler did not attend.
– Those who were nursing injuries or rehabbing and did not practice included defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, wide receiver Ronald Curry, center Jake Grove and safety Jarrod Cooper. Linebacker Edgerton Hartwell also did not practice.
– Kiffin said Carter, who has been at the facility the most with Russell, has developed the best chemistry with the quarterback.
– Defenders have made repeated attempts to strip the ball from McFadden, who was fumble-prone in college. No one has been successful during media availability, and Kiffin said McFadden has not fumbled in closed practices.
– Russell continues to make minimal errors with a safe, controlled passing game. During one instance Thursday, however, wide receivers Todd Watkins and Walker failed to hold on to medium-depth routes which were too hot to handle.
– Left guard Robert Gallery returned from his wedding and honeymoon and joined the first team offensive line with left tackle Kwame Harris, center Chris Morris, right guard Cooper Carlisle and right tackle Cornell Green.
The second-team offensive line was manned by Seth Wand at left tackle, Paul McQuistan at left guard, John Wade at center, Mark Wilson at right guard and Mario Henderson at right tackle.
– Defensive tackle Terdell Sands played on both the first- and second-team defensive lines. One first-team line included Jay Richardson at left end, Gerard Warren at left tackle, Josh Shaw at right tackle and Kalimba Edwards at right end.
Sands also played inside at times with William Joseph.
More to come later . . .

Wow. 2nd, actually. I was guessing.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Tui sucks
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Bring back Stu and Simms while your at it…
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Lol, welcome back Tui…you still suck, but you are better than nothing at 3rd string!
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:19 pm
I agree…this is a better system for Tui… not sure of his mindset though
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Tui did fine in the Gruden offense… sucked in the 70’s offense… with Kiffen… he could be in a much better situation
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:21 pm
My sources tell me that John Parrella was at OTAs this week too…there is the d-line help we need!
http://www.denvertechchiro.com/images/celebrity_parella.jpg
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Considering the dearth of QB talent on the New York Jets roster, the fact that they are not interested in Tui probably says something.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:22 pm
practice makes perfect
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Can’t wait till football season begins!
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Nnamdi having not signed his tender, is there something going on or is this a non issue b/c its voluntary OTA’s
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Eric,
Perfect practice makes perfect…otherwise I would be on the PGA tour…LOL
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm
I just finished watching some weird discussion on First Take about whether or not a human could out run a bear, lol.
They said the fastest a human has ever been clocked is 27mph.
The funny thing is, when I was at the bachelor party this past weekend, we were so tuned we thought it would be fun to go see how fast we could run using one of those street radar signs…I ran 18 mph drunk…not bad for a white guy, lol.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm
or better said.. practice of perfection makes perfect… practice of crap ( see shell version 2 ) makes crap
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Aso will probibly not sign his “tender offer” becasue they are working on a long term deal. They have to get DMC signed before they can sign Aso to his new contract.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I worked with Tui’s uncle a couple of years ago. I used to give him crap about how brittle Tui was. His uncle is 6′7″ and in the Military.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:31 pm
OK Thanks, but now I’m a little confused DMAC can participate in OTA but not Nnamdi?
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Double edged sword time.
The D was unable to strip the ball from DMC. Great for DMC, bad for the D. ughhhhhhhhhhhhh, even when we get good news, it reaks of bad news. lol.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
haha glenn……the dearth of nyj qb roster
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Its just like it was for JR last year. Nambi has been in the league, DMC hasn’t. Different rules for the 2 of them.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
“Russell continues to make minimal errors with a safe, controlled passing game. During one instance Thursday, however, wide receivers Todd Watkins and Walker failed to hold on to medium-depth routes which were too hot to handle.”
I sure hope Kiffin doesn’t try to dink & dunk this guy. He probably will though, until Lofton replaces him.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
951 how could there be any bad news…..these days especially with Stu, Sims, and McClown gone?
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Got ya thanks
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Wow tui huh? well he did only lose like two college games his whole time in the crimson and grey as well as ryan leaf in his time in the pac 10. We should just list curry as the number three and use the roster spot on some one who will actually push competion and play in the regular season!!! I say um.. either a run stuffing DT or A run coverage LB lets win 10 beat the donks and the dolts an reign dominance in the AFC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:37 pm
JERRY>>>>>>>>>>
UPDATE ON CURRY’s FOOT INJURY PLEASE!
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:37 pm
FYI… For you SO-CAL’s out there, Fred Biletnikoff, to be on KLAC AM 570, at approx 2:30PM PDT.
Can be heard via the net at, am570radio.com
note: Be Advised, this is the Lakers flagship station. For you Laker fans & haters alike.
Just say NO to Tui.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:39 pm
FLA pete- what the hell is the hooch?
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Tui-ty Fruity sucks. I’d rather have that Ivan Drago look-alike back and that’s not sayin’ much!
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I would rather have Chad Pennington.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:40 pm
kiffin wont dink and dunk too much thats why we got WR that can stretch the field
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I was going to school with Freddy B’s daughter the year the Raiders went to the SB. She got tossed out of school on Thursday before the game for having an excessive amount of different drugs in her room. She showed up to school in his SL 65 AMG after she wrecked her car. Poor guy. She was horiffically ugly too.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Tui sucks. He is mobile, but too brittle to be a mobile QB. He doesn’t put in the work to be a quality backup in the NFL. Walter is a good 2, now find someone else to be a good 3 just incase we have a turnstile OL yet again.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Damn 951…no respect for the dead.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:43 pm
951 dude … wasn’t she murdered… c/mon
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:43 pm
There is noting wrong with dink and dunk passes as long as you go verticle once in a while too.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Oh yhea Mike bush played qb in hs and dmac can throw as well seriously lets use this roster space a little more creative!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Tonio,
I didn’t hear about that. If her name was Natasha, then I guess so. Didn’t know anything about that. She was from his 1st marrige.

May 22nd, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Tui = camp fodder. He will never make the last 53 because his vet minimum is just too much $ for a scrub QB. We can afford 3 younger scrubs with that cash and the best will likely be eligible for the practice squad, which Tui is not.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Tui is a serviceable 3rd stringer at best! One thing, he is a team guy and probably wouldn’t cause any comotion in the locker room. I hope Nnamdi doesn’t sign the tender and soon signs a long term deal! He is a true #1 and should not be vicitmized because of DeAngelo’s contract….Man, I cannot wait until September 8th…Donkey’s are going to feel the Wrath and Shanarat will will be the talk of Denver….of course, his job security!
Go Raiders!!!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:50 pm
as long as this guy doesn’t start, it’s fine with me. i mean think about it, we probably might have to go wit tui if jarmarcus gets hurt. Walter is a better quaterback, but tui fits better in this system.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Tui=hahahahahahahahahahaha
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Has there ever been a #3 QB that HAS caused commotion in the locker room?
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
wrong daughter. wheeeeeeeeeeeeew. Still sucks that his other one was killed. That was his youngest I believe.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I think Vince Evans will be our #3…good system fit.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:52 pm
True!
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Brien Says:

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Hooch is a colloquial nickname for an illegally distilled corn or grain-based alcoholic beverage…
yer welcome bubba…
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
With Huff and Wilson switching it up between the spots it makes me wonder if they are going to be using them as blitzers and haveing the otherone stay back in coverage? It could happen. Maybe this year we could see RR actually earn his keep.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I’d rather sign Rudy Carpenter, QB, Arizona State. If we want a veteran to “compete” with Walter, aren’t one of the Detmer (Koy or Ty) available? Couldn’t we also see if Tampa will release Plummer, or trade for Plummer? We could trade Sapp for Plummer……just a thought.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I need more opinions from you Jerry!!!!! Did Jamarcus look good throwing the ball? Is he accurate? Just because he’s not throwing deep doesn’t mean you can’t describe his passing a little better. Is Walter the only Qb throwing nice td passes?
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Should we call up Todd Marinovich (sp?) too? Oh wait, he’s in jail for being a crack head.. Maybe Jeff George then..
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
i think it’s pretty common for Franchised players to wait to sign their offers…
it allows them to skate…
instead of busting your ass in the heat…
you can be cool by the pool…
and having a Raiderade…
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:59 pm
i’m not sure we need a 3rd string QB…
Curry, Bush, and McFadden have each been QBs…
let’s face it… if you’re needing your 3rd stringer…
you’re hurting already…
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:00 pm
anyone else having trouble posting? It keeps giving me a blank screen after it reloads……
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Tampa has like 8 QBs under contract… 3 to 5 of them will be availbale in the next month or so…
personally… i would like Sims as a backup…
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:02 pm
If tui’s back to compete for a spot I wonder if that means that AW could be a June 1st casualty. Tui isn’t that good and it actually sounds like AW it throwing the ball fairly well.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:02 pm
I guess no one was impressed by my 18 mph speed while intoxicated…
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:03 pm
If Nnambdi signed his $10 mil offer now he would hose our cap as Woodson did. I am kind of glad he hasn’t, since it means he has no wish to get into a urinating contest with Al (poor imagery, sry). And that he has better agents than the Postons who worked for Charles.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Sims is just as injury prone as Tui, only Sims is missing his splean (sp). It’s tough to stay healthy without it. I think he would be a liability.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Tui may get through camp and learn the Offense so that we can call him mid-season if disaster strikes. But as I said he is too pricey (vet min.) for a roster spot as #3 QB.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Dakota
Sorry man, I was freeking out about the FB’s daughter thing.
I will have to hit the one up by my house when I can get up and around again. I’m thinking 12 is going to be my best and that one is a down hill read….lol.
Maybe your 18 was do to your swagger. lol
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Are there any other college DL guys that haven’t signed with a team that we could bring in to get a look at? How about LB’s?
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
hello nation.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I like the idea of being creative with the 3rd QB roster spot. The problem comes when one of the two guys gets hurt and we have nobody ready to go. We should work on developing a QB at the Practice Squad level and use the 3rd spot for an extra OL or WR.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:11 pm
951,
To make it work you have to run in the middle of the lane, so find a side street with little traffic, oh, and one more thing…
…don’t wear boxers, I think my true speed may have been 10 mph, but the radar picked up my ballz rapidly bouncing off of my thighs at 18 mph.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:12 pm
VERY IMPRESSIVE DAKOTA ! I said “holy sh!t” when I read it but felt it was too late to respond.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:12 pm
bringing Tui back, mmmmmmmmmm………why, I know he will be our 3rd QB,but why is he going to help JR how about Trent D or others with experience playing the game that can teach JR.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Hey Dakota, I’m impressed you didn’t eat sh*t while running intoxicated.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
What’s up O.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:14 pm
GRIM,
They have very nice, flat roads in that part of Fort Collins.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:15 pm
I remember Tui battling for the second spot with Walter a couple of years ago. If he isn’t preparing for games now, then Kiff will either light a fire under his a$$ or drop him like a bad habit.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:15 pm
not much Assassin, a little upset with Tui news, how are you?
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Dakota…. I would argue that, the radar in question needs to be re-calibrated. Was the wind at your back??
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Dakota dont make me laugh man it hurtz too bad. I almost popped another stitch.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
what can Tui teach JR?
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
I’ve had some bad experiences running while intoxicated. Especially when you eat sh&t and the cops catch you. That always sucks.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Dakota at 18 mph:

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Same here O. The Tui news is nonsense, especially when we had better potential in camp like the kid from Nebraska. Cheaper with much more upside.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
That was pretty weak Jerry. There must be more coming.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Bo that is messed up man, dont give the retarded kid a complex by compairing him to dakota………….lol
Sorry D, I couldn’t resist.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
lol
…wait, that was mean Bo!
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
In other quick-hit news:
1. Strong safety Gibril Wilson missed practice with a minor quad injury. He’s expected back next week, and will be the subject of a Chronicle story in Friday’s paper.
With Wilson out, Michael Huff spent most his time back at strong safety with Rashad Baker filling in at free safety.
2. First-round draft pick Darren McFadden shared backfield time with JaMarcus Russell, catching two passes in 7-on-7 drills. He spent the bulk of his time with Walter and the second-team offense.
Check back for more details in a few hours …

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
I actually liked the statement, it reminded me of MR
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
thats what I’m saying Assassin, if we’re not going to bring a vet to help JR and Walter, we can develp a rookie to keep after walter or trade, but Tui what can he offer us?
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Hopefully Jerry will give us the scoop on Curry’s foot injury. How did Wilson injur his leg? Kif said it wasn’t bad so what happened? Pulled a quad like A-Rod? What gives? Why is Walter passing to DMC? Is DMC playing with 2nd team or is Walter taking reps away from JR with the 1st team?
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:22 pm
did Baker play last year??? I’m not remembering him…
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
2. First-round draft pick Darren McFadden shared backfield time with JaMarcus Russell, catching two passes in 7-on-7 drills.

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
No, mean was posting Al Davis’ old man feet pix
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Tui, no.
Walter, no.
Sam Keller, maybe.
Trent Dilfer, perhaps.
Bruce Gradowski, interesting.
Tim Rattay, so so.
Daunte Culpepper, risky.
Bryon Leftwich, bargain?
John Beck, no kidding.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:26 pm
“As for players actually practicing, JaMarcus Russell continues to look more comfortable.
He seems to have a nice rapport with WR Drew Carter and rifled two spectacular passes between defenders.
One was a dart to WR Todd Watkins. The second was a play in which Russell drilled the ball to TE Tony Stewart in a tight space”.

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Rashad Baker was with the Patriots last season. He has bounced around the league since 2004, but the kid has talent and just needs a chance.
He is one of my tips to make the 53. Go Baker-boy!!

Good for you Tommy!

JR is accurae with his cannon, and I’m happy he feels comfortable with Carter, I rather hear he is more comfortable with walker.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Tui = scraposaurus. He may be old, but at least he doesn’t have any desire. Which kinda reminds me of my wife’s favorite desciption of may manhood: it may not be long, but at least its not too big around.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
*my, not may

These came from JJ.
One was a dart to WR Todd Watkins. The second was a play in which Russell drilled the ball to TE Tony Stewart in a tight space.
*S Gibril Wilson (quadriceps) didn’t practice so Rashad Baker and Michael Huff were the safeties.
*The offense worked on running to the outside today, which meant RB Darren McFadden was able to show off his speed and burst.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Kiffin on the Tui situation:
“I can’t comment on it,” said Raiders coach Lane Kiffin. “You guys can probably figure that out but until about 2 o’clock I can’t really say anything.”
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Interesting that Wakefield is still getting a run at DE. That was his original position (he rotated with Kyle Vanden Bosch at the Cards in 2001 and 2002) and I still think it is where he best fits. He would be an obvious back-up to Richardson. That would leave Burgess, Spires, Edwards and Scott battling for the other two or three spots.
I also really like the sound of our second OLine. Good to see Ward, Wilson and Henderson getting a run. I think all three have a shot at the final 53.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I didn’t know Al Davis had a daughter:

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:41 pm
It looks like Kiff has got everyone who would actually show up for training competing for a spot. Too bad Burgess is too good to show up with his teammates.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:41 pm
@ 28 “Wow tui huh? well he did only lose like two college games his whole time in the crimson and grey as well as ryan leaf in his time in the pac 10.”
Grey and crimson? Dear God. Tui wasn’t a Cougar! He went to a real scool.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Tui sucks man.
They might as well brought back Daunte.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Fred Wakefeild, a converted Tight End, backing up Jay Richardson?
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Update on contract talks with DMC.
Selected right behind Ryan, former Arkansas running back Darren McFadden is a steal at $50 million, the salary he is seeking in a six-year contract, according to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle. The newspaper says McFadden wants $20 million guaranteed.
Picked No. 4 last year, Tampa Bay defensive tackle Gaines Adams got a six-year deal for $46 million with $18.56 million guaranteed. Prior to this year’s draft, No. 1 pick Jake Long signed a $57.75 million contract with Miami with $30 million guaranteed.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Why don´t we move back Tui back to Safety while we´re at it?.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Lets ask Brien which is the strong side if a converted tight end lines up on defense.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm

FB is praising the D? Yikes.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Kool, Wakefield is built to play DE. He played there at High School, in college and in his first two years in the NFL. He is an adequate blocking TE but I think he could make a very useful DE. This is no joke.
You wouldn’t say no to Vanden Bosch, would you?
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
“The Oakland Raiders have signed veteran free agent quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo. The Raiders originally selected Tuiasosopo in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. The former University of Washington star spent the 2007 season with the New York Jets”
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
thats retarded
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
The Raiders are still considered one of the leading candidates to sign free agent receiver Koren Robinson, who was recently cut by Green Bay.
Still, the Raiders may not move quickly. They are studying their younger receivers in the OTA sessions and will continue in the full-team minicamp in the first week of June. Two of Oakland’s five draft picks, fourth rounder Arman Shields of Richmond and seventh rounder Chaz Schilens of San Diego State, are receivers.
Thus, the team wants to see how these two players perform now before deciding if it should go after a veteran such as Robinson before training camp starts.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Says espn.com´s hater bill williamson.

Wow, another looser that was cut has found his way back onto the roster. Thanks Al.
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Let’s hope Wakefield makes the roster as a special teams guy.
A part time Tight End/Defensive End is not a polished guy.

‘It was definitely something I was waiting for, something I’ve been expecting for two months,” Schweigert said. ”Everybody knew it was coming, but I still had to go to the mandatory camps.
”It was terrible, sitting through the meetings and working on the defense they were putting in and all the time knowing I wasn’t going to be a part of it. I wasn’t into it mentally, emotionally or physically.”
Getting his release, however, has recharged Schweigert, who played four years for the Raiders after Oakland picked him in the third round out of Purdue in the 2004 draft.
”I’m ready to go,” Schweigert said. ”The Raiders have been trying to trade me for two months now, so my agent has been talking to teams who are interested. Now those talks get a lot more serious.”
As the 2007 season ended, Schweigert could sense his days as a Raider were numbered. Criticisms became louder, and he finished the season on the bench.
”I basically didn’t play the last five games of the season, yet I was fourth on the team in tackles,” Schweigert said. ”But they kept talking about how I wasn’t a good tackler.
”In all my years in football, I’ve never been around a more negative atmosphere. Nobody had my back, even when in the years before I had their backs 100 percent.”
According to Schweigert, part of the blame is in the type of defense the Raiders use. It offers little help for the free safety.
”I would make a bunch of tackles, but the highlight on (ESPN) SportsCenter would be the one that I missed because that was the one that went for a touchdown. The Raiders are the only team in the NFL that uses the cover-0 defense, which puts eight men in the box and man coverage on the rece
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
”Some teams will use the cover-0 as a gimmick defense on rare occasions, maybe to blitz. But nobody uses it as their standard defense like the Raiders do.”
The defense leaves the free safety, in this case Schweigert, alone on a very big island.
”When the runner gets to me, eight guys have already missed him. The highlight though would only show me. The disappointing thing is that I was held up to criticism and nobody defended me after everything I’ve done for the Raiders. I didn’t miss any camps. I did everything they asked me to do, on the field and in the community.”
In the offseason, Oakland signed safety Gibril Wilson from the New York Giants, sending an even clearer signal that Oakland no longer had room for the 26-year-old safety.
”I knew it was over at that point,” Schweigert said. ”With the big signing and with Michael Huff coming back, I knew they wouldn’t keep me for a number of reasons, including financial ones.”
So now Schweigert gets to pick his team … and money is not the determining factor.
”I need to go to a team where I can compete for a starting position,” Schweigert said. ”I’ll probably sign a one-year contract where I have the best opportunity to show I can play. After this year, then I’ll hit the free-agent market.”

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
what do you guys think???????
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Kool, you’re right that Wakefield needs to contribute on special teams, but we are really short on DEs who can stop the run. Burgess, Edwards, Spires and Scott are pass-rushers - and they are all vulnerable against the run. Only Richardson has the size and technique to hold his ground. We desperately need another big DE - and Wakefield looks the best alternative.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I’m impressed dakota but then I’m just an old slow white guy. I was pretty quick back in the day though. I went both ways at Ramona High School in Riverside, Ca. Reciever and corner, played a little DE in the Air Force. Tui? come on!?
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Tui must not have dissed the Raiders when he left!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Schweigert was a good person but she makes way too many excuses. I don’t recall the Raiders ever changing their philosophy on defense and guys like Eric Turner and Eddie Anderson didn’t have problems with open field tackling. Everyone thinks they are better than what they really are when they leave the Raiders and try to use the negative media as an ally to justify their displeasure. Stu will be another Dorsett that fizzles out of the league, he’s slow and afraid to bring the metal.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Assassin
Stu was alot of things, but slow is not one of them. The guy’s a 4.5 Safety. That isn’t slow. Maybe mentally processing speed is a little slow leading to bad angles, but physical speed, he is not slow.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Scottish, I don’t know there’s a couple of rookies on the roster, Spires & Edwards seems to be the only seasoned substitute players at that position. But it’s early, these are look-sees to see who get invited to camp. They may pick up Taylor or another made available FA.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Schweigert just has to deal with the horrible reality that he just isn’t good enough to start in the NFL.
And neither is Tui.
Nor Walter.
Will somebody please find us a credible back-up.
Why am I the only one who thinks Leftwich is the no-brainer option?
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:14 pm
RN951 - She was slow. Missing the angle at 4.5 speed because you can’t diagnose angles makes you slow.
You said it better though, I should’ve elaborated like you did. She was slow because she couldn’t diagnose.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Leftwich probably doesn’t want to be buried behind JaMarcus Russell at this stage of his career.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Sandwich?? Are you serious? Keep that clown away from the “Foundation”. We don’t need his idiotic idea of a passing attack clouding JR’s judgement. There is a reason DelRio shipped him out of Jacksonville. Let him continue to flounder about in the unemployment line.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Any truth to the J.Per rumor? That is the missing piece of the puzzle. C’mon football season!!! Jason Taylor seems hollywood bound why not work on the west coast in 2008? And no, I do not watch that sissy ass dancing show!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Tui is just getting in shape for next year’s season of Dancing with the Stars. Tui says if Jason Taylor can get into the finals I’m a sure thing. The NFL has made a very positive impact on that show with Jerry Rice, Emitt Thomas & Jason Taylor. Tui has happy feet and should do well.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Stu seemed to be a good guy until his media tissy fit. Lost alot of respect for him after that.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Man, this Fred Wakefield dude is something, did some “research” and I have never heard of a player starting games at DL, OL and TE.
The guy has 27 NFL starts as DE, 9 starts a OT and 9 starts as a TE.
It´s impressive that he has such versatility and is good enough to start more than one random game at 3 different positions.
Of course, there´s also the fact that he´s apparently not good enough to stick to any of them.
2001: Started final 12 games, recording 47 tackles, two quarterback sacks, team-best 16 hurries, nine passes defensed, and one interception return for touchdown.
2002: Started 15 of 16 games, posting 44 tackles, three quarterback sacks, nine hurries, one forced fumble, and five pass deflections.
2003: Appeared in 10 games with five starts in first half of season, registered 33 tackles, one quarterback sack, one pass defensed, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble.
2004: Preseason foot injury resulted in being placed on I.R. on 8/31, after that made the switch to offensive guard, used time on I.R. to attend offensive line meetings and learn the nuances of his new position.
2005: Made the team after switching from defensive end to offensive tackle in 2004 while on injured reserve.. saw action in 15 games, started 9 at RT.
2006: After making the switch to tight end from offensive tackle…..played in all 16 league games with nine starts for the Cardinals.
2007: IR.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:18 pm
No offense to J. Rice. Or any of the guys, I just have better things to do. Somebody PLEASE give me some good news about John Perella.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Tui would suck it up on “dancing with the stars” just like he did in the NFL. He will fumble his partner and come up lame at the same time.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Leftwich would be a bargain but he would give us less than Culpepper did. His delivery is way too long and I don’t think he can roll out. He definitely has a big arm but so does Walter.
We need to find the combination of “good mentor”/”good arm”/”ability to scramble”. We need to find a Charlie Batch.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Stu: “Something’s fishy around there”
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:22 pm
I´m just saying that´s impressive, I don´t think he´ll help us much at any of those positions, he´s 29 already and may not even make the roster, but his versatily should help him.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Stui, was gut wrenching to watch. Looked like a cartoon at times, legs churning so fast had that spining wheel look, then the arm whiff on his sorry a$$ attempts at tackling, followed by his tumbling cartwheel into the ground. While the ball carrier is running off to the horizon.
Pathetic..
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm
You would think he would be worth keeping if he is servicable at multiple positions.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Guys don’t get to torked about those little camp injuries, once the guys work out the kinks alot of that stuff goes away.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I will never forget Stu playing patty cake with LT running down the sideline from the 20 all the way into the endzone and he never attempted to push him out of bounds.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Ran track in HS too!…
“…second in conference 200-meter dash and competed in the Illinois finals with the 800-meter relay team and high jump (6’–4”) as a junior.”
LOL…Let´s give this guy 15 million right now.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Well, Nation, if you don’t like Tui and only Assassin and I rate Leftwich, you will need to choose another QB from the following list of FAs:
Daunte Culpepper
Trent Dilfer
Tim Rattay
Kelly Holcomb
Jamie Martin
Craig Nall
Tim Hasselbeck
Not very inspiring.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Tui is fine, he´ll be 2nd string soon, you just wait.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Not at all Scottish. I’d take none of those guys and bring back Kellar for the P/Squad and let him throw at our defense in practice everyday.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:30 pm
I hope he never takes a snap, but he´s ok.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:31 pm
951, Yeah I remember that one, turrible.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Tui is a hit away from IR again. He can’t take a hit, hasn’t proven to anyone that he can be a back up. He was in NY last year and couldn’t hit the field. That should tell you all you need to know. Both of NY’s other qb were garbage, and Tui was 3rd string. He will not beat Walter for the 2nd spot. He can’t teach JR anything, he is a waste of a roster spot.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Jerry Mac… Does Tui look like he’s in shape?. Or like he’s been hanging out at RR’s beer keg w/ Seabass??
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I agree about having someone like Sam Keller at No3. But taking a longer-term prospect like Keller means you must be conservative about your main back-up - which narrows the list to Culpepper, Leftwich and Dilfer…possibly Rattay?
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:36 pm
The Raiders have Tui on their homepage.

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Who cares about our 3rd string QB…if it gets to the point of having your third stringer in, you are fked no matter what.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Give Simms, a look if/when the evil Chuckie cuts him.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:40 pm
As far as I’m concerned, I’m looking for a plausible backup to JaMarcus, period.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:41 pm
951
As far as NYY, Chad Pennington wins games when healthy and Kellen Clemens is their QB of the future, they had no reason to play Tui.
Tui is not a great player but neither was McCown and he played over AW. Tui´s game is similar to McCown, he can move and is at his best on moving pockets, just like Kiffin likes. Tui has a great shot at being the opening day backup.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Unless we trade for a back-up or wait to see who drops out of Tampa (Sims, Gradkowski?), then we have very little choice but to take one of Culpepper, Dilfer, Leftwich or Rattay. Kiff surely doesn’t propose to take both Walter and Tui into the final 53?
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:42 pm
DeFilippo is going to have his hands full. Tui is aweful. Walter is still a work in progress, and JR needs the bulk of the work to get ready to be a gamer. development of 2 qb’s is too much for a coach to have to deal with during the season. They need a qb who has been there who can come in and assist JR with work ethic, reading the D on the fly. You know someone like Gannon. Not Tui. This move makes no sence.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Bellpepper, is still under the illusion he,s a starter. Plus had a bad attitude when Kiff put 7yrd. check down McCown, back at starter.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Man I wish we would’ve signed Quinn Gray.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Marley,
both of them sucked last season. There was no logical reason for mandingo to not play Tui if he was able to play. Chad was hurt and lemon wasn’t getting it done. However, he must have been better then Tui, which makes my point, he is terrible. He doesn’t deserve a roster spot. He was shipped out long ago. He is like a bad penny, he keeps coming back.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:48 pm
While everybody is busy bashing Stu for speaking the truth about the Raiders archaic defense scheme YOU MISSED THE REAL NUGGETT. (As usual)
Stu talked about sitting in meetings learning about what they’re going to do. As in - the Raiders are changing their D this year. He is the 2nd guy in 3 weeks to indicate this. This doesn’t mean a 3-4 it could be a 4-3 that actually works. As Stu pointed out, the Raiders run primarily an idiotic scheme you see in high school, flag football and snad lot.
BTW - Eric Turner and Eddie Anderson didn’t play in this scheme. Not all m2m 4-3’s are the same.
Of course, RR said that the team runs a proven system when he was confronted. More RR bs. The fact they’re changing proves it.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Culpepper has the most ability - but doesn’t want to back-up anybody.
Dilfer is a great team guy and mentor - but the arm just isn’t good enough any more.
Leftwich has ability and is desperate to prove himself - but there are mechanical problems and he needs reassurance.
Rattay has shown glimpses of talent - but he doesn’t offer enough.
Walter has a great arm - but he has terrible feet.
Tui has great feet (the 2002 version of Dennis Dixon) - but he has a terrible arm.
Somebody call the Bears - we need Rex Grossman.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Speaking of Josh McCown, I don’t see how ANYBODY could name him a starter, over and over again. That’s disturbing.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Would anyone be suprised if Tui beat out Andrew for #2 spot?
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm
WILSON AND HUFF…
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=414854
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:54 pm
PS - Tui is the king of the “duck” floater pass. Walter has the accuracy but just isn’t a roll-out guy. If JR went down we’d be better off with Walter (who looked good last preseason) and just calling fewer rolls.
BTW - Having DMAC or Bush as a play-action threat would be a great fit for Walter. PA to Bush, Walter hits his old buddy Miller on the skinny post behind the confused LB. Not bad.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Do you guys think the 3rd string qb is actually going to get playing time this season? That would be disturbing. I hope we don’t see Andrew on the field let alone Tui. If Dilfer would want to come in and help JR with reading the D great, other then that we dont need him or Tui’s sorry azz.
Dilfer is the only qb that has been mentioned here lately that I would want to help JR out.
Sandwich has his own proplems that we don’t need JR to develope.
Pep can’t hold onto the ball and again, JR doesnt need to learn that.
Rattay……what can be said about terrible timmy?
Sims…..lost his spleen because he couldn’t move out of the way and took too many big hits. Couldnt read the D prior to being hurt.
The outlook for a good “teacher” for JR is looking bleek.
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:55 pm
“He’s an animal out there,” safety Michael Huff said. “We always knew he could tackle, he was big. But I didn’t know he could cover as well as he can. So I think that’s going to help our defense out, help us in coverage, we can change it up a little bit.”

Agree to disagree I guess, Tuis fits the system and AW does not, Kiffin showed last year that he´ll go with a guy who can move around (McCown) over the standing target (AW).
Like I said before, if Tui is healthy, he should take over the backup spot by opening day, but we´ll just have to wait and see.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:01 pm
The Bellpepper has done it in this League.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Wilson said:
“What I bring is my physical presence being in the box,” Wilson said. “Whenever I think of the Raiders I think about a physical, physical football team. That’s what I’m going to do my best to bring back.”
Huff said:
He’s an animal out there,” safety Michael Huff said. “We always knew he could tackle, he was big. But I didn’t know he could cover as well as he can. So I think that’s going to help our defense out, help us in coverage, we can change it up a little bit.”
Wilson Said:
“I think me and Huff are going to complement each other very, very nicely,” Wilson said. “There’s not a play that we shouldn’t talk before the actual snap of the ball. Me and him, we need to be on the same page. We need to know what each other is thinking and disguising and everything and not giving away defenses and things like that. I think me and Huff will be great together.”
Very promising. I like hearing Wilson talk about being physical. That is definately something that has been missing from this D for a long time.
Bring the Pain!

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:04 pm
That doesnt speak to good about our DLine depth when Terell is playing 1st and 2nd string. Also who the hell is Rashad Baker. Did I miss something??? I thought Trevor Scott is the 2nd string safety.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Bob
IF Tui is 2nd qb on opening day I will erect a shrine to JR and become a buddist and pray/sacrafice small animals daily that he doesn’t get hurt.
Hopefully Walter’s arm strength is enough to keep Tui as 3rd or off the 53 man roster all together.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I think Tui could beat out AW… unless AW took dance lessons from Taylor…and learned to move his feet…
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:06 pm
“The Raiders are stressing the fact that safeties Gibril Wilson and Michael Huff are flexible enough to alternate”
I dont like the idea of swapping safeties. I feel much more comfortable with letting a guy play one position and getting comfortable there.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Tay
Look at the bright side. The Turd is getting lots of work to get his carcass in shape and make sure he understands the assignments.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Bob the biggest question is Tui’s lack of other abilities. McCown was mobile but he also threw 0 INTs when the Raiders led. He protected the ball well when tied too. (2 INT’s)
Tui throws floaters and is routinely picked off in preseason games by back-ups. He also lacks the mental aspects. Remember Culpepper and JR had to study their butts off before Kiffin gave them a shot.
As big a deal as is made of the roll out, it is being overhyped. In the SD game JR rolled out on less than 40% of his passes I’d guess.
Tui’s legs alone aren’t going to get him any farther with Kiff than they did with, Gruden, Turner, Shell or Mangini.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Having Huff and Wilson able to seamlessly transition from one spot to the other is only going to make it that much easier to blitz one and have the other cover which ever spot needs to be covered. That should open up the D.

Any news on when Kelly will be back??
I never thought I would say this but Id pefer Tui over AW. I think he would be a smart. Also AW is a borderline scolarship player. He doesnt fit the system. Let him roll.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:19 pm
so tuiasosopo will be the cagey vet, a couple of years past his prime, who will pass on to russell (and walter) the tricks of the trade? who are we kidding? all tui can pass on is to duck and run when our “iffy” offensive line has it’s pocket collapse too early. i think russell can figure that out on his own. come on, after june first there must be someone out there with real ideas to pass on to our young quarterbacks.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Rashard Baker played for the Pats and the Raiders signed him early in the off-season, Kelly is expected back by Training Camp, and Scott is a Defensive End and Branch is the drafted Safety-Branch is move of a Special Teams player. The Raiders like having players that can switch around & knowing Huff & Wilson will be switching and hiding coverages is great news…

someone… anyone please tell me we are not going to sign a running back to play quarterback…
we don’t need Tui…
if there is no suitable QB on FA market, Curry was a college QB, McFadden can toss the rock…
hell, Bush could chuck it in high school…
any of them could be the emergency QB… oh, and they should know the playbook…
as for McFadden’s fumbling, i understand that nearly all of his fumbles were on returns, not runs…

Raider Nation 951, post 178:
JR doesn’t need an ex-has-been QB teaching him anything. They’re not at his ability and they have nothing at his level to bring to the table.
He’ll do just fine with his QB coach, taking most of the reps with the starting team, mastering the playbook and the options available to different defenses and the options of blitzing situations available to him. His natural, unique ability, and his brains (JR is a smart dude, don’y kidd yourself) and he’ll be just fine.
If we need a backup, Andrew Walters will do just fine as well. Give the guy a chance with the unit we have.
And, YES, I hope we see Andrew EVERYGAME, but with a healthy Jamarcus. If we have a healthy Jamarcus, playing excellent and we still see Andrew every game, then it only means we’re kicking butt and it’s the 4th quarter and JR is resting and observering.
Send those “has-beens” to the donkeys, dischargers or the cooks…we don’t need them contaminating JR>
