To Odell, or not to Odell?
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, May 30th, 2008 at 1:42 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The representative for unrestricted free agent linebacker Odell Thurman said Friday he expected to have talks with “a half-dozen” teams next week but was not at liberty to disclose which ones.
Safarrah Lawson said Thurman was taking care of some family business before getting down to the business of finding another employer after being waived by the Cincinnati Bengals on May 19.
If the Raiders aren’t at least investigating the possibility of signing Thurman, they should be.
And if they think there is even the slightest chance Thurman can resurrect his career after missing the last two seasons under suspension, there is no downside in bringing him in for a chance to play alongside Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard.
The Raiders obviously have some reservations, or they would have simply claimed him off waivers when the Bengals let him go. Unless they already have some well-founded information that Thurman is not on the straight and narrow, they erred in not doing so.
Claiming Thurman under the terms of his original contract would have cost his new team $520,000 this season and $615,000 next in 2009 _ none of it guaranteed.
The fact that no team put in a claim has already put the rumor mill to work. Thurman has been out for two years for violations of the NFL’s substance abuse policy, and although recently reinstated, must be available at all times for testing. If he slips up again, his career might be over.
Although the program is confidential, it’s possible teams have information that Thurman came up dirty again or are afraid he did, with the test working its way through the appeals process.
Lawson’s claim that talks will begin with some teams next week indicates there is at least a limited level of curiosity.
The Bengals waived Thurman when he failed to show up for “voluntary” organized team activities, citing family issues stemming from the death of his grandmother. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis quipped that Thurman’s grandmother “has been buried for some time,” indicating he wasn’t entirely buying the reason for the absence.
It’s worth noting, however, that Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer, who didn’t go out of his way to support motor-mouth wide receiver Chad Johnson, wasn’t on board with Thurman’s release. Thurman was said to be a well-liked teammate and not a divisive influence.
The Raiders should be in the mix for the following reasons:
– Although Thurman’s presence in the substance abuse program constitutes a risk, it’s not that great a risk considering what he will be paid. Losing him would present no serious cap or financial ramifications, since no team is liable to give him much more than than the NFL minimum.
Thurman at a modest salary with little or no bonus is less of a risk than giving $18.125 millon to a defensive tackle coming off ACL surgery or $16 million to a wide receiver with a history of injury, in a business sense.
– As promising as Morrison and Howard are, neither has played at the level Thurman did as a rookie with the Bengals. You could make the case that Thurman should have won the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award over San Diego’s Shawn Merriman, who had 41 fewer tackles but 10 sacks. Thurman had 98 tackles, five interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and was the centerpiece for a ball-hawking defense which helped lead the Bengals to an 11-5 record and a division title.
– Even though at 6-foot, 235 pounds, Thurman is similar in stature to Morrison and Howard, he is versatile enough to play anywhere. He played in the middle in Cincinnati, even though some consider the weak side to be the best place for him. If Thurman returns to something approximating his 2005 form at age 25, he is an upgrade whether he moves to the middle, with Morrison moving to the strong side, or plays the strong side himself.
The Raiders didn’t hesitate in drafting running back Darren McFadden just because they had good running backs, so it makes no sense to pass on Thurman because you’ve already got two linebackers approximately the same size.
Fred Biletnikoff, the Raiders Hall of Fame wide receiver and former wide receivers coach, said on a Sacramento radio show recently the Raiders problem is “too many backups,” meaning the roster simply hasn’t been talented enough. Thurman is a talent.
– The Raiders used to pride themelves on this sort of thing, bringing in second- or third-chance players and giving them an opportunity other teams would pass up. You wonder if Al Davis is a little gun shy on the substance abuse issue after what happened to Darrell Russell.
At a press conference a few years back, Davis was lamenting afterward about Russell’s talent and his problems with substance abuse. (This was before Russell’s death in an auto accident).
“We just couldn’t win that battle,” Davis said, sounding more hurt than angry that a player with such skill could not conquer his demons.
But in an economical sense, Thurman isn’t going to cost what Russell did, and if he were to recover, the Raiders could add a game-altering talent to a defense that still needs it.
If it didn’t work out, it was still a risk worth taking.
In other developments:
– Bringing in Keith Rowen to the personnel department, given his history as an assistant coach, will add to speculation that the table is being set to keep a complete coaching staff in case Lane Kiffin is an in-season coaching casualty.
The Raiders have not officially confirmed Rowen’s hiring, nor have they announced the hiring of special teams assistant John Fassel (he recently showed up on the team’s official coaching roster on Raiders.com) or the addition of former linebacker William Thomas to the personnel department. Thomas spent the rookie minicamp wearing Raiders gear talking with members of the personnel department and his eventual job may be in advance scouting.
– Morrison is the perfect Raider to put in studio time on the NFL Network’s “Total Access.” He is a not only a genuinely likeable guy, but is incapable of uttering a word that is not optimistic and rosy in outlook. Morrison can look you directly in the face after the Raiders have been trampled by yet another running back and insist the defense is just fine against the run. And mean every word of it.
– The Raiders mandatory minicamp will be open to the media on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with two practices on each of the first two days and one on Thursday.
– Had an interview set up at the facility a couple of years ago and watched a little of the Raiders Youth Skills Camp, sponored by California Police Youth Charities. The players and coaches who were assisting in running the drills, for boys and girls aged 8 through 14, seemed to be enjoying it as much as the kids. This year’s camp is scheduled for June 7-8.
For cost and more information, see the Raiders’ website.

May 30th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
There is no downside a player with a lot of talent a few problems but no gaurenteed money… i say sign him if you can
May 30th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
No way in hell that teams don’t know what’s really going on w/ Odell.
Some team would have claimed him by now if they didn’t get word that he came up dirty again, or that his life in general is in a downward spiral. Maybe it’s not even that he is using again, maybe he is just plain out of shape. Yeah, it’s supposed to be confidential, but in the real world teams and players talk.

The lake show is going to boston i just hope the week lay off doesnt hurt us in a game 1 on the road
May 30th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Odell will go to a winning team. The Raiders are not the franchise for a misfit to turn his career around.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I think low risk high reward odell was a beast and we could use some “stop the run help” even if he is out of shape as long as hes clean and ready to work bring him in weve all been out of shape you just have to want it and i know he atleast wants a job so thta might just be enough to motivate him.

—”Keary Colbert missed the last day of the Broncos’ passing camp Friday with a hamstring pull.
Unless the injury lingers, this shouldn’t matter much. Colbert is battling Darrell Jackson to start and was probably a slight underdog before the injury.

agreed, jerry; why on earth not try him?
May 30th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Keary Colbert!!! Jeebus, I LIVE in Denver & I never heard of that guy!
May 30th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
What?
Oh I liked him a lot before he became a donkey… He too was a Panther… and he played for USC… I was pissed when I heard Broncos hired him… and we got Walker to big bux…
May 30th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
BP: the raiders have always been EXACTLY the franchise for a troubled and talented player to turn his career around…
May 30th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
The thing is if Odell Thurman acts up and does something dumb…then guess what? The Raiders can just say bye bye and tell him to not let the door hit him on the way out.
Simple….low risk, low money, potential high reward!

May 30th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
I never watched a show that repeatedly dissing the right wing as much as the Colbert Report does… its hilarious…
May 30th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
The Raiders are right to be interested in Odell and very right to be cautious about signing him. The question to ask is whether, given his undoubted talent, the Bengals would have cut him if he was truly over his problems?
The Raiders do not want a cancerous presence in the locker room. If there is the slightest suggestion that Odell isn’t clean, he shouldn’t be signed.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
EME…
you might be right, but I think its worth the risk, now you brought up cancer, then its like lets smoke those cigarettes…
May 30th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
somthin must be up, if Odell had any possibility of playing this year the Raiders would have been all over him. If they passed than I trust them that something is up with him that is not worth the risk.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
We dont know what that substance abuse was, but if he was on roids that rookie year than there wil obviously be a dropoff in production when he does return.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
LMN: colbert is magnificent. we need more like him. and odell? why on earth not give him a try. his qb said he was not a locker room cancer, and they usually know!!!
May 30th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
its not a good idea. what kind of example are you setting for the young players on the team right now if you sign this junky ?
May 30th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
I hear all arguments against doing it, and furthermore I agree with them all, but still… I got this itch…grr we need this guy…
May 30th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
EME: do we KNOW he’s on junk? if so, then forget it. but if not, why not try him? for him to be a cancer, he’d have to make the team, wouldn’t he? if not, what’s the risk?
May 30th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
LMN: yes grrrrrrr. we need this on defense!
May 30th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
is there any non-junky players out there that we can sign to help up stop the run? go Lakers.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
thats a new one… now he is a junkie? all bad I ver hear about him is he is weed-head… not like Darrel Russell who was a junkie in the Whitney Houston/Layne Staley mold..
May 30th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
LMN, I entirely agree about the need, but something about Odell isn’t right. Either he isn’t over his problems or he’s connected to some unsavoury characters. I just don’t see why the Bengals wouldn’t have given him a second chance if this was a one-off mistake.
Odell or OD?
May 30th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
does anybody of you know about a database where you can find what weather there was a particular date? in a given area?
May 30th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
weed is an illegal substance right? and this dude is a junkie cuz he cant get away from it. can you say ricky williams?
May 30th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
1. Odell is done in the NFL, All 32 teams have decided against paying him $500,000 this year, and $600,000 next year; thats chump change in the NFL, clearly they are all aware of something that we are not about his ability to produce.
2. I hope that the John Fassel rumor is true, I have always respected Jim Fassel as an O.C., and I’ve heard that Al likes him to. Perhaps hiring his son is the first step in enticing Fassel to join the raiders in some capacity. Either way, I like the kids’ coaching heritage.
3.Is Al Davis trying to assemble the greatest “legacy” coaching staff of all time? Kiffin, Fassel, Ryan; maybe he should hire Shanarat’s son.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
And just when a brother steps out, I glance back and see Jerry has posted what I’ve been wishing for since the Bengals cut him…….
SIGN ODELL! SIGN ODELL! SIGN ODELL! Give him a chance Al. Hell, we’re giving Javon Walker a chance and he’s a proven hothead who whines over the ball, so why not give Odell the chance too. He’s a helluva lot cheaper also….
May 30th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
everyone deserves another chance no matter who you are.
imo
May 30th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
SR: marcus allen was connected to unsavory characters, but that didn’t seem to keep him from cleaning our clocks twice a year!
May 30th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
EME..
yeah in a way, but a junkie is something completely else, a junky is someone who shoots up his junk in their veins, that is pretty hard with weed, if its pot or the real stuff… But yes its illegal, thats not my biggest concern, thats that the NFL doesn’t allow it…
I believe that most NFL players use weed as most other athletes, all over the world, use it… against pain and as downers after big events or games…
I believe over 80% of the NFL players use weed regularly… guys like Favre too…
May 30th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
LMN: the weather channel has such a database, however i don’t know if it is also connected to comcast.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
very true lmn.
popping pills for the pain is some form of a junkie as well.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
“junkie” is a broad term, often used in a racist manner. the question is: does this guy want to play football? and for us? he and we know that the powers that be will be watching him, and that he’s done if he doesn’t maintain the same strictness of training any successful player adheres to. i see no risk here…
May 30th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Coinman…
hmm it doesn’t seem they do..
I would like to know what weather it was apr 5th 2002… in Kings County, Seattle, Washington…
May 30th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
speaking as someone who is prescribed pain pills but doesnt take them cause i dont wanna get hooked on them as some people i know have i say prescription drugs are way worse then weed and i am not advocating weed either
May 30th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
maybe so, but to call a weed-smoker a junkie is pretty far fetched to me… then all executives I ever met junkies, almost everybody I know who are between 20-45…
May 30th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Seatown…
am I right, King County is near Seattle, right?
May 30th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
seattle in in king county
May 30th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
fine then im right about the location and the date… now I just need to find a date…
april 5th 2002, Seattle, King County, Washington…
May 30th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Coinman, its not that simple. There are rumours (albeit unsubstantiated) flying around the bengals.com forums and other sites that Odell Thurman either missed or failed a drug test in early May and that he also failed to return to the team within a 72 hour timeframe that he promised - something to do with a funeral that maybe never was.
This isn’t about race, its all about risk. This guy just feels a risk too far.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
…now i just need to find a database…even =)
May 30th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
you planning to travel back in time, in a suped up DeLorean, LMN?

no, but it could be sweet, No I know it rains a lot in seattle, so the chance is big, but I bet that it rained that day with one of my friends… its a long story, but it has something to do with the lyrics of a song and what happened that day…its way out i know =)
May 30th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Coinman… Coolness!
May 30th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Yeah, I have to think Odell’s game is just not there after two years of being away.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
junky is a racist term now? would it change your mind if i told that i am colored? the point is this guy is addicted to banned substance. like i said before, look at what has happened to ricky williams’s career. he has/had all the talent in the world but has thrown that away so he can smoke that crap that he is addicted to. i wont use the word junky, sorry if i have offended you.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
did u find anything lmn
May 30th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
EME…
and I agree with you on all terms just not that he is a junkie, i know its like splitting hairs, I just would never call a weed smoker a junkie, but an addict is another thing…
still I think the temptation is too big, and what is the cost? the money is peanuts, and if he just acts out one time then let him go… the games he helped us win is in the past then…
May 30th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
lmn how much was the bet and what was the song?
May 30th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Seatown
i found out that the weather server is most likely called WAZ505… thats all, everything i get is todays weather and about 5 days ahead… usually the most important thing about a weather database… just not right now… LOL
May 30th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
EME: would it change your mind if i’m white? junkie is a pejorative used to label a wide variety of people in a wide variety of situations. therefore, the word is too broadly used and hence meaningless. we need to stop labeling each other and start supporting each other… sorry nation, for the sermon.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

May 30th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
What does R. Kelly have to do with OJ Simpson? Because people on the cable news channels keep drawing comparisons between him and OJ Simpson. OJ Simpson is a former football player who was charged with double murder. R. Kelly is a singer being charged with child pornography. I just don’t understand the connection. Is it because they’re both celebrities? Well, plenty of celebrities get arrested. Why can’t they say, “this is just like Phillip Spector”?
Anyhow, that aside, thank you Jerry for bringing up the Biletnikoff interview. And, Jerry, mind you, Freddy B didn’t just casually mention the fact that the Raiders roster has been dry of talent and relied too much on back up players, it’s all he talked about for an entire segment. He ripped the combine as well. He outright, and repeatedly, mocked the notion that good athletes make good football players, even going into a mocking imitation of people who do so. “Oh, this guy runs a so so 40, he’ll be great..”…with sarcasm. I really wish some of you reporters and columnists would talk about this particular interview, Jerry. Because I think there was a subtle shot at Davis there. The kool aid crowd in here can deny it all they want to.
And, thank you for speculating on Rowen’s hiring. Without a doubt this is part of the transition to replace Kiffin. It’s unbelievable. But that’s Al Davis. You know that as well as us more realistic fans know it, Jerry.
Stay on the old man. Don’t let him or his hacks intimidate you. There are thousands of fans like me who want to see this team win again and have every right to wonder what’s going on behind closed doors. You’ll never know how appreciative we are of what you do, Jerry, in regards to investigating how horribly this team has been operated in recent years. Don’t let up until the team is winning again.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Gotta get Thurman. I don’t understand why they didn’t already. If none of that money was guaranteed on the 2-year deal, what would they have to lose? He’s arguably as talented as Morrison and Howard.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Like I said….Signing Odell Thurman to an incentive laden contract is a low risk, high reward proposition….

There must be a reason the Raiders didn’t pick him up off waivers…I’m indifferent about signing him.
Go RAIDERS!!!!!!

Maddenraider,..good to see you still havent gotten a life,..keep up the good work!
May 30th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
A joke to you negra,..but all metal bands idolize KISS,…as far as a joke,..fine I guess,..but laughing the way to the bank…I have heard Ozzy,..Iommi,..Zombie…Dimebag,..all of them say the same thing,..KISS was the best,..you can call them a joke I guess…by the way, Dimebag is buried in a KISS casket.

I’ve got a life now, Alameda Raider (R. Ramirez). Just came into a settlement check and I’m determined to blow it all on wine, norcos, and Raiders season tickets. See you at the game.

RR…
oh yeah BLS, and btw Metallica is right now on my mediastation =)
but I like almost every style of rock, so I could mention a bunch of names you probably would judge as weak… I’m not just/only a heavy fan but of all the rock genres. the last few days a bay area band has been on heavy rotation hera at my place, acid heads called Brian Jonestown Massacre… I love it, but its not for everybody =) LOL
May 30th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Adios people…and you too Madden,…sorry I cant put you in a “people” category…..you are still stuck in “lifeless poster in a blog” category.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Great post MR, I agree…the writing is on the wall if things don’t go well this year.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
RR…
yeah… maybe so, but i question many of those guys other decisions if you get my drift… its fine with me, Kiss just never did it to me…
As Rolling stones (the mag) said, every band wants to be the next Beatles…Kiss wanted to be the next coca-cola… that says it all to me… I understand Alice Cooper fans, I don’t like it but I understand the fans, Kiss I never understood, and it looks like I never will, but its okay, Kiss fans goes to the same Concerts as I am, so there is nothign vicious about, I just don’t understand it or like it…
As its fine with me you find AIC weak, Ugly Kid Joe or Strokes, yeah yeah yeahs would probably be judged even harder… To me those are great bands and if Kiss does it for you, then fine, to me they are more a cartoon band than they are a heavy band…
May 30th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Alright, RR. Head back to your small trailer in Placerville. Let me know when they ban you again and you go to another screen name.

Worked at a restaurant in high school and remember all of these KISS fans coming in one day before a concert at Arco. My god were we clowning them.

There’s a lot riding on Tommy Kelly & Turd Sands. That’s got to give even the most optimistic pause.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
but i can see the similarities between those raider fans that take all that silly make-up on at game-day, and the make-up Kiss fans use… same demographic base i guess…

—”Bucs waived QB Bruce Gradkowski.
Once a favorite of Jon Gruden’s, Gradkowski fell out of favor after showing terrible downfield accuracy in 11 starts as a rookie in 2006. He has terrific mobility and can be somewhat effective in the short passing game, but Gradkowski just doesn’t have the tools to project as more than a long-term No. 3 QB. He still should latch on in a West Coast offense before training camp.

Gradowski has less than 4 years in the NFL, so he has to pass through waivers, we should snag him up. I wonder what kind of trade-value Andrew Walter would have at this point though.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Am sure that Big AL, has had his “people” do the background checks needed on Thurman. Don’t expect anything before June 1st. cuts. Although Thurman will come cheap, so to speak, AL is pretty well maxed against the cap.
If Thurman is clean, why not take a flyer on him.

May 30th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
I can’t believe nobody claimed him off waivers…there must be something to that - from the outside looking in, I say grab him, but if nobody claimed him off waivers, given his talent and the fact that he’s already reinstated (Dallas coughed up a 4th for Pac Man and he might not be reinstated), maybe the NFL knows something else about him. There’s nothing worse than a star player who lets him team down by flunking a drug test and getting suspended. If he’s in that category of risk, then we can make due without him. Better not to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all when it comes to team chemistry.

If you guys are questioning getting Thurmanhaveyou already gave up on Hartwell. The Raiders already have a LB that they are trying to re start his playing days
May 30th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
I don’t think it has to be an “either/or” between Hartwell and Thurman, but if forced to decide between them, yes, I would definately take odell over hartwell.
Are the guys on here saying that they don’t want odell because he smokes weed the same people talking about “I am preventing cancer” in the first part of the comments?
A 25 year old who smokes weed is not that big of a deal. Certainly not if it makes our beloved silver and black even a touch better!
May 30th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
A little deductive reasoning –
Why would a guy wanting to come back miss a voluntary team activity? Simple. He knew he’d have to test and knew he couldn’t pass. Why would the Bengals be so quick to unload him? Simple. They knew he was still dirty.
When he went on waivers why wasn’t he claimed? Simple. Teams knew he was still dirty.
Why is his agent saying he won’t talk until his “family business” (he gets clean enough to pass?) is taken care of? Simple. He is dirty and either needs to a) finish appealing a dirty test or b) get clean enough to pass the test he’ll have to take. Either way, he’s still dirty.
Remember -
An agent and player can hire a private lab to run the same test the NFL will. If he gets another dirty NFL test his NFL career and his agent’s commission are gone. So, he fails a private test before voluntary workouts and his agent tells him not to report and get clean asap. Meanwhile his agent stalls…
If he were clean it would be smart business to get signed asap and start his “fresh start” either with the Bengals or a new team. In this situation there is no smart reason for a clean player to miss OTA’s and not sign and pass a physical showing the world how clean he is.
May 30th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
NTOT: i’d take ‘em both and hope one pans out. why on earth not?
May 30th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
“A 25 year old who smokes weed is not that big of a deal. Certainly not if it makes our beloved silver and black even a touch better!”
It is a big deal if he plays in the NFL. It is a big deal if you move Morrison outside, change your D and pow, right before the season starts he gets banned for life. It is a big deal if the guy is such a bonehead that he would throw away an NFL career so he can toke. Really. Think about that. “Here is a dream career with a multi-million dollar salary but you can’t smoke pot.” What kind of loser do you have to be to blow that? Ricky Williams may be able to answer that. Ricky? Ricky?
May 30th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I would rather gamble on Takeo Spikes, rotator cuff and all.
May 30th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
this may seem a little outre, but what are these guys supposed to be dirty of? if cocaine or heroin, then certainly they are of no help. but pot? medical marijhuana is not illegal according to calif. law- although it is according to an outmoded and paranoid federal law. the supreme ct. argues this every year. i am in chronic pain, but i don’t use pot. but so are players, and i don’t blame any who do. they have to keep up thier appetites, no matter how bad they feel. test steriods, for the player’s safety. test hard drugs. but leave marijuana the f#*k alone. according to calif state law, it’s no body’s d%*ned business, and the player’s union should correct this. as said in the movie: Let Them Play!!!
May 30th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Way to turn this into a legalize marijuana rant. Medicinal marijuana is legal in California so obviously the NFL players should use it. Yet another retard looking for a crutch to get through the day.
Do me a favor and get a job and move out of mommies basement. I hate when my tax dollars go towards baked retards beating the “marijuana does not make me a loser, I do that myself” drum.
May 30th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
I say go after Thurman and Spikes. What the hell!!! This defense could use anybody that can stop the run. I would also be happy if we traded for Jason Taylor. Add Taylor, Thurman and Spikes and you got a defense.
May 30th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Gforce21: your personal insults, the refuge of a scoundrel with no counterarguement, could have not been more off-base. you know nothing of my personal life as i know nothing of yours. why don’t you try thinking about issues, instead of trying to execute personal attacks. we’d have a better team, and nation, if you did…
May 30th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Man, I tell ya Huff. Taylor would be frickin sweet!!
I am so impressed with what Al and Lane have done in the past, what, 14 months!! Just 1 more year after this to seal the deal.
Go Raiders!!

May 30th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
I bet 75% of people smoke marijuana. Its just as popular as alcohol in my opinion. I’m really surprised alcohol is even legalized considering how many accidents are caused by it and how much abuse happens over it. I bet a cop could sit outside of a bar and arrest every person getting in their vehicles because most of them would be over the legal limit. In my mind, alcohol abuse affects other people while marijuana abuse affects the person using it.
Its also strange how hardcore drugs can be cleared out of your system within 2-3 days while marijuana can stay in your system for up to 30 days so that is probably why it is illegal. I don’t condone smoking pot and my 29 year old brother just recently quit smoking and I’m happy about it but I think alcohol is more abusive than weed. Just my 2 cents.
May 30th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
huff24- absolutely. why not…
May 30th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Taylor would definately be sweet. If Al can be ok with Bo Jackson playing baseball during the football season, I’m sure he’ll be ok with Taylor doin some dance moves. Just show up on Sunday and get after the QB and help stop the run. We rotate guys in and out so often, it wouldn’t hurt one bit. Burgess at LE and Taylor at RE would be DANGEROUS.
May 30th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Hey….lets bring another QB arm into camp. We’ve been waiting for the Buccaneers to release someone and here it begins.
PFT.com
BUCS DUMP BRUCE, BRING BACK STEVENS
Posted by Mike Florio on May 30, 2008, 6:48 p.m.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have pulled the plug on the Bruce Gradkowski experiment, cutting the 2006 sixth-round quarterback from Toledo.
The move leaves the Buccaneers with only 16 quaterbacks on the roster, give or take a few.
Gradkowski started 11 games as a rookie, after Chris Simms went down with a spleen injury. In 2007, however, Gradkowski made only four appearances. His career passer rating is 65.0.
Because he has less than four years of service, he must pass through waivers before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
More importantly (and more troublingly), the Bucs have re-signed tight end Jerramy Stevens, a turd extraordinaire due primarily to his antics while at the University of Washington. Stevens was a first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2001, and he signed a one-year deal with Tampa in 2007.
In January, PFT Planet was up in arms regarding Stevens’ history of misconduct, and we hope that the Bucs face strong criticism for their decision to continue to employ this man.
May 30th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Huff24. this would be a fine aquisition. we have little to lose, and everything to gain!
May 30th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Dang! I night when there’s not a bunch of morons on here and I have to split.
Read you guys later.
I thought Gradkowski was pretty fearless, very good arm. But I think he might be a bit slow on the move.
Anyways,
Peace out brothers!!

Eagles DE Chris Clemons says size doesn’t matter.
(Is anybody going to miss him?)
Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle calls what he’ll be running this year “a pretty simple offense. It’s giving guys the chance to go out and play, not a whole lot of thinking about it, just go out and line up and go.
(That simple offense could produce alot of Touchdowns for Hall and Asomugha hopefully.)
Chiefs LB Napoleon Harris seems to think he’s being unfairly blamed for the team’s problems: “We were 4-12, so somebody’s going to get blamed I guess. . . . Coaches tell me one thing, I read another.”
(Theres a reason we traded that guy.)
May 30th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Take Oakglenn with you, Coinman. She seems a little frigid, as well. You two could use sleepless night with a man. It’s friday. Lots of guys out there for the two of you. It’ll get your mind off of me, and you ladies got MaddenRaider on the brain.

F*** Thurman Odell take a look at the Bengal’s D last year and tellme why we would want their MLB, Morrison is better than thia guy
Odell can play inside and outside LB, he has good coverage skills, and he is good against the run. plus he is 24, and we NEED ANOTHER LB TO PLAY NEXT TO KIRK AND HOWARD.
May 30th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
he was cut for missing camp, not because he is not good.
his rookie season and only season he had 90+tackles, 4-5 picks.

To Whom It May Concern: (and that’s probably dam*d few). i challenged the gollum creature that goes by the name of MR 4 times to have a balanced conversation with me. i tried to give them the chance to show that they were not 1-dimensional. they ran from me. so i will no longer acknowlege them (which will probably bring me great abuse). but, although i don’t favor this game, it was inevitable to someone who tried to give a fair chance. i’d do it again. but, Nation, you were right. God help gollum…
May 30th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Odell is an idiot. He was milking his grandma’s funeral for time away from the team. I mean the Bengals felt he just was not worth the hassle because it was always something with the kid.
I would rather the raiders take a flier on that Kid Ben Moffitt from South Florida. He was a nice run stuffing middle line backer. He was a hard working kid who commuted an hour to get to School and practice. Odell would just be a distraction.

Lakers in 5.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Celtics are pathetic; some of them actually cried over winning the East, lol. Weak. They are going to crumble under the pressure of the finals.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
yes.. its so much more pressure in the finals than the finals to get to the finals. makes little sense.
by the way, the flags come off the lakers now that they’re playing the east.
CT RAIDER
May 30th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
your not playing the west.. no more wide open 10 footers, or wide open 18 footers.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Lol, yeah, the conference finals are just as big as the finals. Yeah right. 21 years must have dulled the senses of the Celtic fans.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
yeah.. that makes sense idaho i mean dakota. always your last game was most crucial right? if you don’t win the east then you don’t get to the finals. put the pipe down.
they just played two game 7s but ofcourse that’s not as much pressure as a game one in the finals.
who is this, odell?
May 30th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Lol, try playing Kobe like you did LBJ, he will KILL you. Try playing help defense and watch Odom, Kobe and Gasol carve you up.
The Spurs and Utah play great defense and they were helpless…Celtics play in the East where there are two decent teams. What you claim is defense is what teams in the West call a lack of talent.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Game sevens agains whom? The Hawks? lol.
Shoot, the Worriors would have won the East this year.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
how do you know… lakers haven’t played against a defense yet? of course if the Cs played defense like those teams they’ll get killed. this is the same arguement from 25 years ago when the lakers used to always walk through the girls two hand touch league.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
game 7 is a game 7. i don’t understand your thoughts if you don’t think a game 7 is pressure?????
May 30th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Warriors…oooops.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
really? Cs are 25-5 against your mighty west. hahahhahahahhahahahahha
May 30th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Lakers are 20-10 against the East
May 30th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
This is why Lakers-Celtics is great; true hatred for the other team and their fans.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Yeah, what happened to that great regular season Celtics team? They sure have looked shaky in the playoffs. They should have swept their way through the first two rounds of that WNBA conference out East.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
unfortunately not a rivalry. Cs are 8-2 against the girly purple and yellow uniforms in championship series,.
hahahhahahahhah

it’s the east… they don’t have open lanes 10feet wide like the west. it’s a different game in the playoffs. that’s why the high scoring, no defense, west does well in regular season… no one is physical in the regular season. the west continues that trend in the playoffs.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
sound like a bronco fan
May 30th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Lol, the West is not physical? Is that why the West has won like 8 out of the last 10 championships?
Face it, this year’s East is less talented than the Chinese basketball league.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
two teams. not the west.
wow.. a chinese basketball league went 25-5 against the almighty west. hmmmmmmmmm
In fact, the Cs lost 4 in a row right after the all-star break when pierce and garnett were hurt. hmmmmm 25-1 with a healthy team against the mighty west???
i feel like i’m talking to an ignorant patriot fan. They only watch their team also.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Tim Duncan and Shaq won those games. They’re both old and gone now.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Tim Duncan is 32, far from gone or old…but the Lakers just took him out, and they are about to roll the Celtics too. Sorry my friend, even your team knows that they have accomplished all they are going to this season by winning the East. That is why they all cried and celebrated, they know which team has been dominating the NBA since February.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
besides.. san antonio made it to the finals in the west. they’re old and horrible.

The Lakers smiled during their celebration, said it was great and then moved on to the finals. The Celtics cried and hugged and kissed and cried some more and had thousand yard stares of bewilderment. They acted like they just won the championship, lol. Weak.

Lakers are going to destroy the little green boys from the NBA’s farm league. IF AD is a celtics fan, that could explain why the Raiders have sucked it up for so long. He must have wanted to follow in their footsteps.

Who cares what NBA team Al Davis likes? His favorite football team is the worst in the NFL over the past 5 years. I can assure you the Celtics or their fans are not thrilled that Al Davis is a Celtics fan. Considering Al’s favorite NFL team, it’s obviously a curse.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:33 am

He has tried many times to buy the W’s and get someone to run them.

well, some of us will… anyway, we have this marvelous tool called the internet, yet some us seem to treat it as a private tool for insults because we can get away with things that in the real world would lead to broken jaws. we should use and respect the internet as a place to exchange information and opinions. any other use is absurd, but we are rich in the absurd in our area. so be it. we want our teams to be more disciplined in gap holes, in offensive line assignments, so let’s begin with us. if a person doesn’t have a point to make about personnel, about strategy, or about coaching moves that are worth debate, why should we routinely allow them to waste our time. comments about my jobbed warriors or the lakers and celtics are fine, they are often interesting. but high school comments about the sexuality of posters, they should be beneath us and hence frozen out, not with arguement but with silence. this may even help some people to grow up. anyway. it’s worth a try. All the Coaches he let go just to please his own tormented ego, have a combined record of over 276 wins and a few Super-bowls. Yet with his way of “JUST WIN BABY” equals to a Toilet Bowl of 19 win’s
And so it is…………………..

Man we can only hope Lane is as good of a coach as his dad. Check out this nugget:
“In Super Bowl XLI, the two head coaches were Tony Dungy of the Colts and Lovie Smith of the Bears — two former Bucs coaches who learned the so-called Tampa 2 defense from Kiffin. In 11 of the 12 years Kiffin has been in Tampa, the Bucs’ defense has finished in the top 10 in both yards and points allowed.”

Darren McFadden
Our sources in Oakland say Raiders coaches are encouraging their defenders to go after the ball when RB Darren McFadden is carrying it in camp to test the rookie’s ability to avoid fumbles. We hear McFadden needs to do a better job of locking his elbow down in order to erase some of the concerns the team has about his tendency to cough up the pigskin.

Jerry,
Why do you chose to take cheap shots at a team that “you” write for?
(”Thurman at a modest salary with little or no bonus is less of a risk than giving $18.125 millon to a defensive tackle coming off ACL surgery or $16 million to a wide receiver with a history of injury, in a business sense”)
Your just as slanderous as Nancy gay and Ann Killion, you just had to throw in another cheap shot at our beloved coach.
(”Bringing in Keith Rowen to the personnel department, given his history as an assistant coach, will add to speculation that the table is being set to keep a complete coaching staff in case Lane Kiffin is an in-season coaching casualty”)
Pathetic!! thats what you are Jerry!!!!
Go write for the Chargers!!

Jerry doesn’t look at the big picture. I’m not sure calling thurman, who is a drug addict who has been in the league only 3 years and already has been suspended for a year (which is the result of a third offense). ALso, he skipped out on coming into camp because…. HE WAS GOING TO BE TESTED AGAIN. This is a guy who is 3x worse than Ricky WIlliams. WHy waste time on a guy who, best case scenerio will be around 4 games before getting into trouble??? He’s not worth the risk. I’d risk on a player who is hurt that he’ll be better prior to a drug addict who has been given FOUR chances in 3 years and still spits in his team’s face.

Same being said for our local sports writers (Jerry, Ann, Nacy) Reading their writing is similar at times to watching the NAZI’s march. It makes a lot of us sick.
We can watch BSPN and read Peter King in SI if we want to get all negative about our team we don’t need our hometown reports to do it for us in every article they write.

May 31st, 2008 at 1:18 pm
CT RAIDER,
I’ve watched Gradkowski since he played at Toledo. The guy is a warrior. Played his senior year hurt yet still played well enough to get drafted. Throws a great short to medium ball but Gruden did not like his long ball. Would make a solid 2 or 3 qb. Surprised by his release but Gruden wanted him to be able to hook up with another team now rather that screw him by releasing him after training camp. Classy move by the Bucs.

Simms hasn’t played football for at least a couple of years and was the starter when he got injured. So when you say Simms throws floaters you really have no clue. Simms has upside, Gradkowski cracked under pressure and is nothing like Gannon when he was younger. WTF is going on here, you must know this kid or something or your his father…
May 31st, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I think Simms can become a starter again, he is still young and he is a hard worker. The guy ruptured his spleen in a game what more can you ask from a player?

Don’t you think there’s an awful lot riding on Turd Sands and Tommy Kelly, 2 unproven guys, to anchor the front 7 ?
May 31st, 2008 at 1:42 pm

Gradkowski had Chester Taylor of the Bears at Rb and Nick Kozsar of the Pats at OT. Pretty good offense that year at Toledo.

Simms was not the starter for a couple years. I believe they were 1-4 or something and he was about to be benched prior to busting his spleen. That was two years ago and by the way, he had 1 td and 6 picks prior to getting hurt. Rumor is the o-line was trying to get rid of him and his 46 qb rating. In his career he has 12tds and 17picks. SIms is f’n great and maybe a hall of famer. Get real. he sucks. He wouldn’t make the raiders. how many years of “starting” does it take to get those great numbers (12 and 17) especially on a WCO.?? HEllo… another Dakota! or is it dakota? You should read my earlier post that says i haven’t seen much of him. Are you Simms’ wife?

. Arm strength is above average, needs more velocity on some of his balls to the perimeter. Will flash good arm strength on vertical routes and deep comebacks. Accuracy is good although some of his balls will be way off target, maybe due to his lack of poise at times. Doesn’t always allow his receivers to catch the ball and get up field. Jim(CTRAIDER): but what is hurt by trying these guys? no guaranteed money. at worst, training camp fodder. and if one or two should work out, the raider magic returns. i don’t see the downside. if we don’t like their attitudes, they’re out!
May 31st, 2008 at 2:04 pm
coinman… i want to try gradowski.. i’m in. But if odell turns out good and makes the team and chemistry is there…. and then week 2 he fails the drug test for a 4th time and is gone for the year.. where do we go? To keep him we’d have to cut another lb.
i want to bring in Gadowski (gradowski.. whatever his name is), for qb but there is a downside to odell. He’s been out of football and CIncy gave him another chance just one month ago.. not a year ago… and he didn’t show up. he needs to rid his demons on his own and then come play. only my opinion. i went off because there was a personal attack on me. normally i express my opinions until a personal attack is made.
If we decide to bring in Odell.. i hope he is the best LB ever! I’ll root for him on and off the field.

Jim(CtRaider) ignore the personal attacks. they are a dime a dozen here (sadly). and if odell can keep clean and play well through camp, he may be a real find. he knows that this would be his very last chance, and the league would be watching him like a collection of hawks.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:15 pm
The Raiders need a PROVEN QB to backup the young Franchise. They’ve spent too much money on offensive players to turn them over to a unproven scrub, in the god awful event JaMarcus goes down.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:21 pm
thanks for the advice. normally, you take a risk on a guy and you know where you are at the end of training camp. the problem w/odell is.. we’re going to be holding our breath all year! he could and most likely will do something stupid. remember Robbins.
KK: I agree.. but there aren’t any avail. i would like to get something on board.

May 31st, 2008 at 2:24 pm
There will be opportunities to score a QB close to training camp.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:25 pm
KoolKell: yes, if russel goes down, that will be a disaster in any case. i don’t see that many proven backups available out there that would avert catastrophy. certainly no one we have at camp now would do so. i’m more interested in some LT depth- some line depth at all. that’s how we protect “the franchise”.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:27 pm
LOL @ coinaman. This is not 1976. Davis can’t just pick up a troubled guy and stick him on the Raiders.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:33 pm
BP: there have been many guys that have resurrected careers down the years. i don’t need to list them. just, sadly, not on the raiders in recent years. we’re due our randy moss, in fact we’re way overdue.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:47 pm
although 76 was a good year!
May 31st, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I agree. Why not sign Odell. Even if he does screw up somewhere down the line he can help the team while he’s with them and can possibly be an inspiration and maybe even a leader. He’s only 6′ tall, so a lot of his talent is probably based on knowledge and instinct rather than brute force. Maybe some of that will rub off on our LB corps.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Coinman,
I think a proven backup QB is very important right now for the reasons previously mentioned. Hell, JaMarcus could have a ruptured appedecittis? or a pulled hamstring, anything. Not necessairily somebody getting past K Harris.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:54 pm
SBBV: i agree. sure there’s a risk, but how many locks are there in the NFL at all? the thing is-if you take a risk, what is the potential reward? in this case, i think it’s worth trying…
May 31st, 2008 at 2:55 pm
which lb will we cut and never get back if/when we lose thurman?
May 31st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
also, i know we don’t pay the money but after 6-1, anyone who is disciplined by the league the Team is automatically fined.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:58 pm
KK: i’d love a proven backup to russel. but who? i don’t see him out there right now. maybe after june 1st (that’s tomorrow)!
May 31st, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Read in the SF Chronicle this morning that the Raider/McFadden talks are going well, with him being signed in June.
May 31st, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Jim(Ct Raider): i haven’t heard on these pages or anywhere else much excitement about our back-up linebackers. we like our starters and maybe s. williams. the rest could be improved, it would seem,or at least no one wants st see them play- except on teams.
May 31st, 2008 at 3:08 pm
coinman… that is a good point!
May 31st, 2008 at 3:17 pm
KK: good news about mcfadden.. now i want to know when we sign Aso. all our dreams of a great backfield end without him, and some people even talk as if he was expendable!

The first sentence is true enough; the second is inaccurate. His choices are as follows: play for the Raiders and make about ten million dollars, or sit out the year and make zero dollars. I’d call that a no-brainer.

http://www.sports1140.com/pages/1933345.php
May 31st, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Not quite a no brainer. Note how other players have signed contracts with guarantees in the tens of millions of dollars. Players absolutely HATE the franchise tag. Say Nnamdi has a career ending injury after he signs his tender, the franchise tag could end up costing his GRANDKIDS $$$$. To say he has no options or it’s a no brainer isn’t quite right. Nnamdi has to be very careful what he does next. A lot of players sign the tender and then “oh crap, I tweaked a hammy”, on the way to the practice field and basically sit out for ten mill. (See Charles Woodson), They sit until a real long term deal is completed.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:08 pm
I still say the scenario I painted is a no-brainer. If Nnamdi then chooses to pull a Woodson type move, well, I suppose that is his prerogative.

The problems Kiffin and Davis, which have flared into open warfare between the two, date almost back to the day when Kiffin was hired a year ago.
As a young, first-time head coach, Kiffin was so eager for the job that he took Davis’ word on his responsibilities, and did not get them in writing, a mistake that former Raiders coaches could have warned him about.
Even Kiffin’s predecessor, Art Shell, a long-time Davis favorite, was spared further indignity after he was fired because his contract language protected him. Davis wanted Shell to work out his contract as the team’s offensive line coach, but language in Shell’s contract specifically outlined his duties as the head coach.
Davis had to pay Shell off.
Now, Davis is trying to avoid paying off Kiffin, so he is trying to make his coach so miserable that he will quit after just one season. Although published reports say Kiffin has two years at $2 million a year remaining on his contract, a team source with knowledge of the contract said there is only one year remaining at $1.7 million. The third year of the deal is at the team’s option and is not guaranteed.
In the latest volley, Davis essentially has ostracized Kiffin from all meetings and planning sessions having to do with Raiders personnel, and has refused to allow Kiffin to decide the makeup of his coaching staff. Kiffin thought he had some of those responsibilities when he was hired, but they were not included in the contract.
Although the bomb that set the most recent developments in motion was Kiffin’s attempt to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, Kiffin and Davis began clashing on staff makeup a year ago over a contract for Mark Jackson, Kiffin’s top administrative aide.
Jackson got neither the money nor the length of agreement that Kiffin thought Davis had agreed to. By mid-season, Davis essentially had Jackson moved out of his office in the personnel department and rendered him a non-person.
On draft day, as has been reported, Kiffin stood up to Davis and convinced him to trade Randy Moss, who had done nothing in two years with Oakland. Kiffin also was lukewarm on top draft pick JaMarcus Russell, a quarterback Kiffin did not believe fit his offensive style.
When Russell didn’t play until late in the season and then played poorly, Davis blamed Kiffin, although Davis had been warned before drafting Russell to expect a protracted contract negotiation that would inhibit Russell’s progress. That’s exactly what happened, and Russell missed all of training camp.
In season-ending meetings with his staff, Kiffin fired Ryan, whose defense slid from No. 3 in the NFL, based on yards allowed, in 2006, to No. 22 in 2007. Ryan went to Davis to thank him for the time he spent in Oakland and Davis blew up, telling Ryan that Kiffin had no authority to fire him. As a result, Ryan remains on the staff.
Kiffin also wanted to fire about five other assistant coaches whom he had hired. Davis refused to allow that to happen because he did not want to pay off the year all of them had remaining on their contracts.
Davis became further enraged during the playoffs when Norv Turner, the Oakland coach in 2004-05, took San Diego to the AFC Championship Game and Moss helped New England reach the Super Bowl.
Now, apparently Davis has reached out to former Vikings and Cardinals coach Dennis Green as a replacement whenever Kiffin either resigns or is fired. It’s difficult to see how that pairing would work, either, because Green both is independent-minded and has a resume that means he wouldn’t come cheap, always a requirement for a Davis coach.
Green presumably also would want to put his own staff together, something that was at the crux of the battle between Davis and Kiffin.
Oakland has not had a winning season since Bill Callahan succeeded Gruden for the 2002 season and led the team to the Super Bowl. Callahan was fired a year later after going 4-12. Over the last five seasons, the Raiders have had a record as good as 5-11 only once, and their overall record, 19-61, is by far the worst in the NFL.
Kiffin was the team’s fourth coach since Gruden, following Callahan, Turner and Shell. The Raiders have had seven coaches since returning from Los Angeles to Oakland for the 1995 season, and only Gruden lasted longer than two years.
June 1st, 2008 at 3:22 am
i would think that rowen is somebody who davis has known for quite some time. his dad is a longtime local college coach, somebody who al probably knew from the good old days way back and probably a davis confidant, and i’m not sure but i think he might have been at stanford under bill walsh. rowen’s employment with the team may be for spare parts or it may just be al hiring a guy with whom he is familiar and who al considers to be a longtime member of his bay area football inner circle.
June 1st, 2008 at 6:42 am
—”Lions DT Shaun Cody, the No. 37 overall pick in the 2005 draft, is in danger of not making the team.
Cody has the tools to be an effective three technique, but has never been productive. He might’ve worked out better had he been drafted into a 3-4 and taught to play end. If cut, Cody would likely be snapped up quickly.

Sorry, but the Vikings arn’t moving. Their soccar club is doing great partially because the built a soccor stadium seating only 27,000(Home Depot Center). Thus with the great ethnic diversity and limited seating, the have created demand. This is the same site the Raiders had a proposed stadium vetoed by the NFL.

“Why do you chose to take cheap shots at a team that “you” write for?”
Jerry doesn’t write for the Raiders. He COVERS the Raiders. If you want the shrill all you have to do is stay on the team website. I’d prefer Jerry keep a healthy perspective. Every time he notes a positive he’s called a butt kisser, and every time he points out a negative it is a cheap shot. C’mon.

Have you guys had a chance to listen to Kiffin´s interview from Thursday? it´s definitely worth listening to, the link is on post 338 from DoeDoe.
Kiffin speaks on:
- The Coaching Staff: “With the whole staff returning after working together for a year, it´s a better environment and it´s easier for everyone and they relate better with the players as well now that they´ve known them for a year….”
- Free Agency moves: “There´s all this stuff written and said about overspending, but it´s just like the Draft, you judge it after a couple of years, players make the pro bowl and then, if anything, we underspent…..and it´s also about the different systems, you evaluate guys according to your system and how you fel they will peform under it and that also goes into paying them.”
- OL: “The big things is gonna be Kwame at LT…He´s had a great offseason, he was here working out the day after we signed him, he´s gotten stronger, more physical and is working on what he needs with Tom Cable, they´re in there all the time together.”
- On G. Wilson: “A physical Safety who´s a strong tackler was a huge need for us, that was an area we had to improve and he was by far the best out there, we think we got a great player…”
- On Russell: “He got back before anyone else and he was working and studying when there was no one else around, he´s gained a lot of respect because of it….”
- On McFadden: “He´s doing a great job, he loves football, we knew that…. it shows on the way he approaches it, he wants to learn, he hit it off with Rathman and they have a great relationship….”
It´s not word by word but close enough, you should still listen for yourselves.
June 1st, 2008 at 10:18 am
Jim,
The Celtics have one of the worst coaches in the NBA.
They have no bench.
They have erratic play from the PG and C.
Garnett’s ballz fall off in the 4th quarter.
They have no chance in the finals against the Lakers. As your friend, I am telling you to prepare for the worst.
June 1st, 2008 at 10:30 am
There´s also a report on foxsports.com from Adam Schein, the most interesting thing is that he spoke with JaMarcus Russell this week…..
Russell said: “Listen, if there´s anything to those Kiffin is in trouble rumors, we don´t feel it..I´m an extension of Lane Kifin”…….He said he loves working with Kiffin, that Kiffin really has a pep in his step, that he sees harmomny with the rest of the Coaches and that James Lofton has been a welcome addition as WR´s Coach.
He also spoke about the RB´s and Javon Walker among other stuff.

I would hang on to Lamont Jordan until the last cut, provided we don´t have to clear his cap number.
Training camp and pre-season injuries are fairly common, they can put some teams in a tight spot and with little time to replace starters or primary back-ups we might be able to snatch a late round pick for Jordan.
Yes, teams know he´ll be released at some point and they´d still have to agree on a renegotiated contract, but a desperate team might not want to wait for him to clear waivers and probably would like to have him as early as possible so he could get some practice time and learn the playbook.
It´s a longshot, but not entirely out of the question.
June 1st, 2008 at 12:55 pm
That being said, they can cut him right now if they want, I don´t particularly care.
June 1st, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Bob..
I agree… I think they have to cut him to make room for McFaddens salary…. But if we keep Jordan long enough other teams RB’s might get hurt in camp and we could then perhaps ship him off for a 7th rounder

Dakota: i’m mentioned a few weeks ago that the lakers will present problems because of speed. our bench is not that bad (except at guard). We match up against power like the pistons and SA. Although, SA has absolutely no offense at all. We’ll see how it all goes.
I’m shocked boston is a 3 pt favorite. By the way, our bench single handidly won game 3 for us which was the key of the series. NOw Allen is finally shooting well. If Garnett and Perkins stay out of foul trouble then look out. YOu don’t have any big men to match up.

by the way, game 6, garnett hit three huge jumpers in last 5 min. he couldn’t hit in the first half. his ball falls off because he is a defensive fien. He’s every where. he comes out (in the 4th qtr) to defend against guards. Watch him. notice the strategy.. similiar to bulls when they had pippen full court press the Jazz in the championship. statistical mongers (losers) think pippen had a bad series when it was on of his best. His pressure gave utah only 15 sec to set up their half court offense and let to quick shots.

I dont like the condescending remarks about Morrison and Howard being “promising”. Anyone who watched any of last years games knows that they are both BEYOND promising. I mean I do salivate at the opportunity to have three tenacious LB’s instead of two. But I think the D suffered more from SCHEMING than lack of effort(Are we diallowed to blitz or something? 3rd and over ten, you Blitz! G’dammit!), at least for the leaders of the D. The only LEADER who struggled a bit was Burgess, but he was hurt. Anyway, I guess it is worth the risk to take a look at this guy(Thurman), as highly as this weiner ass writer(wetzel) spoke of him.

Odom and Gasol will be a good 1-2 punch to guard Garnett….Odom has the athleticism and Allen can’t guard Kobe. Fisher can guard rondo and Walton or Kobe can switch on Pierce. Odom can guard pierce as well.
