Junking the backup plan
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, June 1st, 2008 at 1:42 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Got a call Saturday from a Raiders official who took exception to a reference to an interview conducted with Fred Biletnikoff on a Sacramento radio station.
In making a case for taking a flyer on free agent linebacker Odell Thurman, I included Biletnikoff’s contention that the Raiders had too many players of backup quality who were starting.
The Raiders’ position is that Biletnikoff wasn’t necessarily referring to the Raiders, but to the entire NFL, and that the interview if heard in its entirety was extremely positive in nature with regard to the future of the franchise.
I didn’t quote Biletnikoff because I had the contents of the interview relayed to me via e-mail and posts on this board, so I’ll take the Raiders word for it.
But I will say this _ if Biletnikoff wasn’t talking specifically about the Raiders, he could have been have been (or should have been). And the biggest reason he has reason for optimism regarding the future of the franchise is that the Raiders have attempted to bring in more players of starter quality.
The 2007 team refuted the myth that the Raiders have this seemingly endless reservoir of talent, just waiting to be unleashed on an unsuspecting NFL once they get the proper direction from the coaching staff. Even coach Lane Kiffin said picking a roster wasn’t all that difficult because there were so many players who didn’t measure up, and that he hoped it would be a tougher process in future years.
To look at the roster position group by position group is a perfect illustration of what Biletnikoff was talking about (regarding the NFL, of course, not the Raiders).
Quarterbacks: Josh McCown was signed keep the seat warm for JaMarcus Russell. Daunte Culpepper is hoping to hook on somewhere as a backup. Andrew Walter couldn’t separate himself from Aaron Brooks.
Running backs: LaMont Jordan was an excellent backup for Curtis Martin with the New York Jets. The Raiders made a calculated gamble in making him a starter. When Jordan is cut, perhaps this week, he probably won’t end up being a starter anywhere else. Justin Fargas had a terrific season once he moved in to the starting lineup, but his running style leaves him prone to injury and he has below avearge receiving skills. Hence the selection of Darren McFadden.
Fullbacks: It’s not really a fulltime position anymore, with fullbacks coming out for three wide receiver sets. Justin Griffith is a cut-blocker with receiving skills, and the Raiders hope Oren O’Neal can become a Lorenzo Neal-style power blocker.
Offensive line: Robert Gallery will never be the franchise left tackle, but he showed promise in his first year as a starting guard. Right guard Cooper Carlisle graded out as the Raiders best lineman last season. That’s two-fifths of a line. Jeremy Newberry made an admirable comeback but is now hoping to sign on as someone’s backup. Cornell Green’s picture may as well be next to the definition of “journeyman” in the dictionary _ the guy you want in case the starter goes down. Barry Sims was waived and at this point in his career is probably a reserve at best.
Kwame Harris struggled in San Francisco, but Tom Cable is convinced he could be the ideal left tackle. There are numerous skeptics, but then again who would have thought Cable could do what he did with the Raiders line last year.
At center, Chris Morris will compete with veteran John Wade and Jake Grove (if healthy) to replace Newberry. The hope is Mario Henderson can show enough to win the job at right tackle after a season of watching from the sidelines as a third-round draft pick.
Wide receivers: Ronald Curry has led the Raiders in receiving the last two years, but is at his best as a third-receiver in the slot, which gives him fewer snaps and means less wear and tear. Some of Jerry Porter’s best work came as a third receiver with Tim Brown and Jerry Rice, although Jacksonville is convinced he can be a high-quality starter. Tim Dwight signed, showed flashes and also a propensity to be injured near the end of his career. Johnnie Lee Higgins was a non-factor.
Coming to the rescue? Javon Walker, if he can stay healthy, and Drew Carter, who Kiffin said is working well with Russell. Plus a pair of draft picks, Arman Shields and Chaz Schilens.
Tight ends: No worries here. Zach Miller could hold the position for the next decade.
Defensive line: Since defensive linemen are often rotated in and out, the concept of starters is overrated. Derrick Burgess is a proven pass rusher who, based declining production the past two years, probably could use fewer snaps. The Raiders have invested heavily in Tommy Kelly and Terdell Sands, and how they fare will go a long way toward determining how the Raiders play defensively.
Linebackers: Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard are among the best pass defending linebackers in the NFL, and if Kelly and Sands can do the dirty work inside, could have the opportunity to prove they can be stout against the run as well. As for the third spot, Sam Williams can’t stay healthy and Robert Thomas is a capable reserve because he can play all three spots.
Secondary: Stuart Schweigert is looking for work, probably as a backup, somewhere else. Hiram Eugene looked like a fringe player when given the starting position. Nnamdi Asomugha is a top-level corner, but Stanford Routt has yet to prove he can hold up every down.
Huge offseason upgrades came with the signing of Gibril Wilson at strong safety and DeAngelo Hall at cornerback. Wilson’s presence will allow Michael Huff the chance to justify is No. 7 overall selection in 2005 with playmaking skills instead of simply being a solid coverage player against tight ends. Hall pushes Routt to the nickel corner.
Even if Biletnikoff’s points were out of context, as I was politely told by a club official, it’s pretty clear the Raiders themselves realized they had a team with too many backups and took strides to make things better.

Is today the first round of cuts (i.e. L. Jordan’s last day as a raider)?
June 1st, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Jerry,
As concise a run-through of last year’s roster as I’ve seen (it is hasn’t been a few). I’d be a little more generaous toward Walter, and maybe Curry, and harsher on Carlisle (not nearly physical enough, the entire right side of the line stepped up, especially in pass blocking and short yardage, when McQuistan stapped in for Green). But that’s about right.
Peace

June 1st, 2008 at 2:53 pm
so someone tell me why we should sign thurman whas wrong with hartwell
June 1st, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Just wait’ll what’s-his-name-today finds out that Jerry relies on him for his information; he’ll never shut up. Of course, he never shuts up ANYWAY, but still. I can just see the title of Jerry’s next Post: ‘This just in: Raider fans drink KoolAid’.
June 1st, 2008 at 3:04 pm
spawn,I think its because thurman is only 24 and people look 2 the future.IMO hartwell will do just fine but thurman can be had cheap,he definetly has something 2 prove and Al has no big money on him.GO Raiders!!!
June 1st, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Gradkowski and Thurman are possible additions but the focus for the next few days has to be on deletions. We need to create some space in the 80 allowed at camp and we need to be making some salary/cap savings.
Lamont Jordan, ReShard Lee and Tony Stewart are probably the three most vulnerable because of salaries.
As many teams will be looking to prune the deadwood this week, we can expect some movement on the roster and hopefully some action to address our five biggest weaknesses in terms of depth:
1) QB
2) DE
3) SS
4) LT
5) MLB
Any strengthening in these positions would be a real step forward.
June 1st, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Will the RRRRRRRRaiders!!!! really consider T.O.?
June 1st, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Jerry Mac….
very funny, and I agree with everything… Not that you care of course =)
June 1st, 2008 at 3:34 pm
why T O is gettin up there in age plus he likes play with his homo Romo
June 1st, 2008 at 3:40 pm
I just read the comments and thought it was appropriate that “OT” thought he was 1st but in reality is 4th. kind of like simms always thinking the count was on 1 !!!

I cant wait to see who’s gonna make the 53 man roster.
June 1st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
raider o you have a messager like a im
June 1st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
of course not =)
June 1st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
I hope Trevor Scott makes the team, and Schilens and Arman. i think Branch is a lock to make it.
June 1st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Spawn, what is a messager?
June 1st, 2008 at 3:57 pm
I didn’t state clearly about “ot” .. it was fitting because Sims was our OT and was always off count as well.
June 1st, 2008 at 3:57 pm
the reason for Thurmon is because he is younger and alot cheaper.. Hartwell has missed the last 2 years because of injury.. Thurmon because of suspension..
June 1st, 2008 at 3:58 pm
How many WRs you guys think we will keep on the roster?5-6 maybe?
June 1st, 2008 at 3:59 pm
both thurman and Harwell should be upgrades compare to sam and Robert T.
June 1st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
I buy the argument about grabbing Thurman and seeing how he does in competition … but can’t fathom why they didn’t just claim him off waivers?
Hey Tampa, point taken about Gradkowski. I would still like to see some vet sign to help Jamarcus as he develops.
June 1st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
I think we will probably take 6 WRs. Definitely Walker and Carter. Probably Curry and Watkins. Possibly Higgins and Shields. The outsiders are Schilens, Holland, McFoy and Reese.
Marcel Reese could be the biggest surprise because of his versatility. He could even challenge Madsen and Stewart for the 3rd TE spot.
June 1st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Im surprised Jordan wasn’t cut at 12:00 am. I’ll be glad to see the back of that fat lazy bastard. I use to hate how he would take the hand off and just stand there until he got tackled in the backfield. Fargas hits the hole weather its there or not and he is half the size of Jordan. If Jordan played like that, he would probably still have a job.
June 1st, 2008 at 4:21 pm
like a yahoo messager or aol messager
June 1st, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I wish Culpepper would have stayed on as the veteran back up. Its not like he’s gonna get a starting job anywhere else…
June 1st, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Scottish
I think you’re rigth about Reese, but he may be challenging Wakefield too, who might be a better option than Stewart. Wakefield has the blocking ability that plays into Kiffin’s run-heavy offense, but obviously never got a shot last year due to injury. Wakefield seems to bring something distinctly different from Madsen or Stewart.
But Reese also at KR or PR maybe? I think he may be a real find.
June 1st, 2008 at 4:30 pm
NC, they are trying Wakefield at DE - his college and NFL rookie position.
Madsen maybe the most vulnerable because he isn’t a great blocker and because Kiff and Knapp don’t seem to have too much confidence in him as a attacking threat.
June 1st, 2008 at 4:56 pm
and you know whats funny about what you are say RR that we are all stupid enough to read his reports so that doesnt say much for else lol
June 1st, 2008 at 5:21 pm
La Milicia - You’re right. I did post information you already posted but I didn’t read through all the messages. I have found it difficult to take the time to read every message lately as I’m not trying to waste my day doing so and the quality of posts have declined enough that its really not worth reading everything. When I see something interesting, I post it and comment but there just isn’t enough news on the Raiders to keep me satisfied enough lately. Have I lost my touch? Probably. Its a slow time of the year.
June 1st, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Huff24…
Lol true, well no worries, I’m just used to your usually high standard of posts..
June 1st, 2008 at 5:28 pm
on another note… I hate Culpepper and he doesn’t deserve to wear SnB
June 1st, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Fumblepepper has no business being in the same stadium as the Foundation. Keep him away from JR. The further the better. The last thing we need JR to pick up on is how to pull away from the center before you have the ball, or just plain drop it for no effing reason. Let the Donk’s or chefs have him. Their qb’s could use that kind of teaching.
And for the love of GOD, cut Jordan already. It’s the 1st of June and we should have heard about him getting the big boot in the azz and shown the door already.
June 1st, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Well, that’s journalism today huh?
emails and blogs. Who cares if it’s true or quoted or not. In order to sell readership it has to be sensational.
June 1st, 2008 at 6:10 pm
I agree Jerry. The Raiders still are not to stout at the point of attack although they are at the upper eschilon of the league with skill player/ potential: DB’s, RB, WR/ TE, and a pontential franchise qb. The Raiders still need to overhaul the front of the offense and the defense. Burgess is a gimmick/ pass rush specialist. Kelly and Sands are both paid for pontetial not for any sort of production. Gallery, Grove, Henderson (not being active last year) Mquistain ( they are not even talking about him as a starter despite playing well last year)are all underacheivers. Players like Morris, Richardson, Harris and Carlisle all add depth to a roster, but there might not be a true pro bowler at the point of attack for the Raiders on either side of the line. Morrison and Howard at the LB and Burgess for the number of sacks he can get will get some consideration, but none have shown the sort of play that says they are men amongst boys like so many other probowlers do.

as the lighting stikes and the rain comes down and when the smoke clears my sith will rise .
June 1st, 2008 at 8:39 pm
There is no doubt the Raiders needed an upgrade in talent at some crucial postions, particularly on both offensive and defensive lines. Fortunately the QB, Safety and WR positions have been upgraded in the last year.
June 1st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Where’s Mr.53?? We need some inside scoop. If you’re out there Thomas, help us out man!!
How’s Jamarcus and Co looking? How did Bush look? What do you think about Miller’s progress? How much confidence do you have in Kelly and Co?? Ok, so you can’t answer that one.

i was on the field today but cant tell you what happen . find out tomorrow
June 1st, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I listened to the Biletnikoff interview live on KHTK 1140 AM with Mike Lamb and Grant Napear. Fred was asked why the Raiders have struggled since the Super Bowl against Tampa. Fred’s response was “too many backups”. He was not referring to the rest of the NFL, and as Jerry detailed in this article, Fred was right on the money!!! But they are moving in the right direction.
June 1st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
I think the main problem besides being still below average at the point of attack is that the Raiders have only drafted one guy who was pro bowl caliber since 2003: Namdi
Other players are just role players or average starters.
2003- Namdi, Sam Williams, Fargas
2004- Gallery, Grove
2005- Kirk Morrison, Stanford Routt, Andrew Walter
2006- Mcquistain, Huff, Howard, Morris
12 players from those 33 picks are still on the team: only 6 or 7 of them are starters. The Raiders have drafted bad. that is why they are a losing team.
June 1st, 2008 at 9:19 pm
There is no doubt the Raiders roster needs serious upgrades. Good for Freddy B. First part in fixing a problem is recognizing what the problem is.
June 1st, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Over the last two season Kiffin has had 16 picks: 3 did not make the team last year and most likely one will not make the team this year. Of those picks the Raiders have produced
J russell
Zach miller
Mario Henderson
Oren Oneal
Jay Richardson
D Mcfadden
There are 6 players that could be starters this season for the raiders drafted over the past two seasons out of the 16 picks. A couple of them are bubble players like oneal, and Henerson. The Raiders will not start winning until they start drafting starters and pro bowl players.
McFadden, Miller and Russell all have tremendous upside if they fufill on that promise the Raiders will start being competitive really quick.
June 1st, 2008 at 9:28 pm
what do you think McFadden will go to the pro bowl this year or next year
June 1st, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Mcfadden should be a pro bowler this year: the AFC is at its weakest point in years with probowl backs.
LT is over the hill and is in his Marcus allen/ KC Chiefs phase of his career.
Lenwhale White will get hurt because he is fat.
Jones-Drew is too small.
Addai is a stud.
M. Lynch is doing hit and runs
Ronnie Brown is coming off an injury
Maroney never has developed
Jones is too old and can’t score TD’s
Willie Parker is a solid player, but he is also coming off an injury
jamal Lewis has a lot (too much) milage
Rudi Johnson… they should have drafted a RB
Willis Mcgahee might be a stud if he can focus
LJ is comingoff an injury
Henry is stupid and smokes too much weed
DMAC is by far the most promising. If he runs for 1200 yards and 10 td’s he will be a star and sure fire pro bowler in the AFC.
June 1st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
f all these basketweavers I’m ready for the season to start…
June 1st, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Good article Jerry. You are clearly not talented when you go 4-12 regardless of who is your coach. A good coach is only worth maybe about 2 or 3 more wins with good game strategy.
June 1st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
south side. this was a bad article. cut jordan already
June 1st, 2008 at 11:42 pm
And they did make things better, The readson for the call Jerry isthat Freddie was being characterzied as a Raiders basher which was not only inaccurate but caste him in an unfavorable light.
Freddie was Mr Raider long before Tim Brown came along so the call was made to correct something that needed to be corrected even though much of what you say is right, Freddie didn’t mean it that way.
June 1st, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Jerry: thank you for all your info and insights and your comments…much appreciated. From comments on this site, by people who claimed they heard the complete interview, Fred was referring to the Raiders. Our record over the past five years proves that. I rememeber when we were on top of the heap and Romo called Al Davis and said: “I would like to come join you guys and help you win a Super Bowl.” Woodson did the same thing. He called Davis and came over to us and if Al would have kept Gruden we would have won the Super Bowl, or if he would have passed on Callahan to replace him, we would have won too.
Anyway, I agree with many of the posters here in that we haven’t drafted very well. I hope Fred is wrong in his evaluations and that our players are better then he believes. Let hope Fred is aging now and he’s not as perceptive.
Now, so we can have some peace of mind, will you please tell AD to sign our franchise corner, to please sign Darren Ma “freaking” Fadden and to get us a MLB.
Oh, one last thing, tell Kiffen to try putting on some “blinkers” on freaking Seabass, just like they do on horses and maybe he’ll stop shanking his kicks. Finally, let give Walter Andrews a fair chance. He played “tooooooooo-goooood” in college and must have some untapped skills as a QB. He should be able to backup JR. Do don’t need Tui…period.
June 1st, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Correction: We don’t need Tui…Also, Jordan is now officially gone.
June 2nd, 2008 at 12:15 am
Dicky V don’t take this stuff so literal. How many real pro bowlers are on one team 4 or 5 at most the rest is popularity.
We have in my estimation on this team the ptential for 4 probowlers. Nnamdi, Hall, Howard, Kelly just on defense and maybe even Burgess retuens to form which is a good possibility. On offense Miller, maybe one of the HB’s are possibilties.
Which seems to escape the notice or underastanding of maost fans is the fact that most teams ar no better off than the Raiders and that turnover in the NFL is very high in case you didn’t notice.
You study the fortunes of one team and you’ll see the same on the rest
When I read comments about the Raiders not drafting well it just shows that yu don’t understand the process and how difficult the draft really is.
“The Raiders just don’t draft well” as if the rest do!! the draft is at best a crap shoot AND FANS JUST DON’T GET IT. You get talent where ever you can get it and with the salary cap you tend to lose young potential talent before it developes.
No excuses we haven’t done well record wise and there are a lot of reasons why but some of us think were but just a little more insight on matters a lot of teams are winning with similar talent but the QB we have now can change a lot over night.
June 2nd, 2008 at 12:18 am
Some of us think we’re much worse than we really are.
June 2nd, 2008 at 12:23 am
Obviously, most of us don’t understand the inter-workings of cap limits and signing. But, I can not, for one second, believe that Davis will not be fair to Nnamdi and that he will sign him soon to a great contract. One that keep him and Hall around for a long time.
For Raiders fans, this is a difficult time of the year. We’re waiting for mini-camp, then training camp and pre-season and the count down to the final 53 man squad.
However, since do don’t understand the cap limits, and signing and bonuses and their inter-working (most of us anyway) we “SWEAT” these stories and we start to believe the unbelievable…”may be won’t get signed?”
Maybe DM won’t get signed? Maybe this and maybe that.
This is a dreadful time of the year. Just sign these guys and lets move on. After all, it’s not our money.
June 2nd, 2008 at 12:35 am
It’ll get done Russell was a very unusual signing with very unusaul circumstances and that’s never happened before so I don’t see it happening this year, or in the future.
We’ll get better and get back to where we belong it just takes time and that’s something you can’t rush.

McFadden, Raiders Nearing Deal
by Chris Bahn
Representatives for Darren McFadden and the Oakland Raiders appear to be doing their best to avoid a lengthy holdout.
McFadden’s agent, Ian Greengross, is set to meet with team officials next week, according to a San Francisco Chronicle online report. A deal could be struck in June with a deal worth between $22 and $30 million.
Why are these early June negotiations such a huge deal?
Start with last year’s holdout by JaMarcus Russell, who didn’t sign until Sept. 10. It essentially cost Russell his rookie season and, according to many around the team, hurt him with veteran teammates in the locker room. Russell himself recently said he’s trying to show teammates last year was a “business” thing.
Then consider the 11 drafts before that, when the Raiders never signed their top pick until after July 10 — and all but one were signed within a two-day window revolving around the start of training camp.
Not that McFadden is currently hurting for money with endorsement deals, including Nike, but this is good news for both sides. McFadden can get to camp and turn his focus to football in a timely manner and the Raiders can avoid yet another poor publicity hit.

Here you go La Milicia Negra:
Broncos finish camp mostly unscathed
By Mike Klis
The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 05/31/2008 02:03:54 AM MDT
The Broncos almost made it through May without suffering a substantial blow to their tight-end depth.
First, “receiving” tight end Tony Scheffler reaggravated his left foot injury on the first day of offseason workouts May 19. Ten days later, Broncos “blocking” tight end Chad Mustard tore a hamstring. Mustard will undergo surgery Tuesday and will be out eight to 10 weeks.
The Broncos had several other players miss the final day of passing camp Friday with pulled hamstrings, including receiver Keary Colbert, fullback/tailback Mike Bell and rookie fullback/linebacker Spencer Larsen.
They join running back Travis Henry (hamstring), cornerback Dré Bly (hamstring) and defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson (wrist, knee) as players who missed the end of passing camp. No. 3 receiver Brandon Stokley also missed the workout Friday for personal reasons.
With the exception of Mustard and Scheffler, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan expects all those players back on the practice field Monday for the start of the two-week team camp.

Ten Questions-Plus with Oakland Raiders beat writer Jerry McDonald
By Rob Calonge | May 31st, 2008
Jerry McDonald boldly goes on the record at TFDS
Here at TFDS, we have gone on record about how we feel reporting should be done. We scour the wire, and other news sources with an eye towards the truth. You have spoken to us as well that you are also doing the same thing, so we’ve come to the conclusion that Raider Nation can live with mistakes, as long as they’re corrected, but they can’t live with the bias. With talk about referees/officials answering to reporters after every game, we thought, “Why not have reporters answer a few questions for us?”
This is first in a series of Q & A with Oakland Raiders beat writers. So what we’ve done is devise ten questions that we intend to ask them all, followed by a few that’s just for that reporter. We hope to be able to bring you all of the Oakland Raiders writers in the future as well. We’re going to let you guys do the follow up. If we’ve missed any questions that you’d like answered, let us know below and we’ll save them for another time.
This reporter runs a blog called, Inside The Oakland Raiders - A look inside the highly classified Oakland Raiders. He’s a reporter and a blogger who doesn’t follow the others. When rumor is the story of the day, he either avoids it or makes a comment referring to it as rumor, while settling Raider Nation with honest commentary. This is part of the reason that TFDS is proud to introduce you to Jerry McDonald. Before we begin, we’d like to thank Jerry for taking the time out of his busy schedule to give us this interview
—-found this on mvn.com. The questions were too numerous to post here. Congrats, Jerry, and you didn’t even beat your own drum on your blog.

Oh, by the way Milicia, I read Broncos “blocking” tight end Chad Mustard tore a hamstring. Today I heard it was Chad Mustard in the training room with a cut notice, he’s gone! Sorry “Clue” fans.

June 2nd, 2008 at 7:20 am
Looks like the Donkeys may be limping into the monday night opener. Hamstring pulls are stretching and conditioning problems and are not easily corrected. Missing passing camps further disrupt timing issues for Cutler. Rat Face can take the blame.

Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic for the opener??? When did they calling doing Football Games. The only thing with nationally televised games is that its 2.5 hours of Raider bashing. I usually watch it on mute. Well, Im glad I’ll be there and dont have to listen to their crap.
June 2nd, 2008 at 8:53 am
Mike and Mike did 1 game last year and a season of Arena Football. Wasn’t too bad. Now if they can be neutral, it might be fun. Mike Golic has great insite being an explayer. Greenberg’s opinions are biased.

raiderTW I enjoy this topic much better than trying to convince the quakers in here that carbon dating is an exact science.
I have a strong opinion that Jerry was or still is a disgruntled Charger fan and he enjoys taking a cheap shot at us at any given opportunity.
The theme of this post was basically we are sorry for putting our foot in our mouth and bashing Freddy?
These same sharks wrote about JaMarcus being 300lbs, Kiffing being fired by March 13th, No worthy free agent would sign with the Raiders in the off-season, blah blah on and on.
I am still angry about the slanderous and inaccurate reporting that has been done all off season by the three stooges jerry, nancy ann.

The Raiders can twist the Biletnikoff interview any way they want, but their twist is not accurate. His comments were in response to a question, which was basically what do you think has been wrong with the Raiders for the past five years? That is when he explained that there used to be a narrow difference between a starter and a backup, but now the gap is much larger. Then he went on to state that the RAIDERS (not the NFL) had too many backup players that HE could not coach.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:09 am
Man… The Broncos are looking more and more like the Raiders did post super bowl appearance. A lot of players hurt going into mini camp and their depths shot to hell. Also, they just release Chris Henry today.

Celtics baby! the Lakers are going down. The big 3 is going to make those pansie Lakers wilt like a hothouse flower. I can’t wait to hear all of the crying and excuses that Laker fans are notorious for.
Ever notice the Lakers never get beat? It’s always someone else’s fault i.e. the refs, the fans any thing but actually getting beat by the better team. It’s always been this way.
Laker fans are delusional egoists that talk so much sh*t that it’s coming out of their ears. What’s really pathetic is they actually believe all of their own nonsense.
Go Celtics! Remember KG did not want to have anything to do with the Lakers for a very good reason. Kobe is a bad person. Good baller, very bad person.

Funny how writers paint a rosey picture of the Titans/Oilers organization with Bud Adams firmly in control for over 40+ years. They only have one AFL Championship to show for it and one Superbowl appearance and the media keeps insisting were one yard away from winning but in reality it would have tied the game if they made the extra point. Why don’t writers bash Adams like they bash Davis? Because they like to bash winners is why.

Lakers lakers lakers!
Sorry, I can’t help myself.
I would be twice as giddy if the Raiders were in the SB!
With the Lakers set for the next 5-7 years and the Raiders turning the corner and the Cubs on fire maybe I will get every fans’ wet dream of having the trifecta championship year sometime soon???
Or not. I would settle for the Lakers in 08, the Cubs in 09 and the Raiders in 2010.

June 2nd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Thanks Jerry. I’ve talked about the Raiders claims of talent before. The fact that almost none of Kiffin’s 2007 cuts were signed anywhere else tells you something.
The way to judge talent isn’t by looking at the roster and saying, “I like his jersey so he must be a freak!”
Our talent is judged versus the NFL. If our guys would START on a majority of other teams, they have talent.
Our projected starters talent based on how many other teams they’d start for (IMO):
Russell - Starter talent. The QB needy NFL would start him.
McFadden - Starter. UPGRADE. Fargas would’ve been labled back-up talent.
Griffith - Starter
Walker - Starter. Upgrade IF he stays healthy. No other WR to replace him has starter talent.
Curry - Back-up. Best of the unproven mess.
Miller - Starter.
Green - Back-up.
Carlisle - Starter. In the ZBS anyway.
Morris - Back-up who has yet to prove his run from 3rd string is because of talent or because we have nobody better.
Gallery - Starter. Finally as long as he stays at Guard.
Harris - Back-up. Back-up on the punchless Niners who needs to prove he’s a starter.
Burgess - Starter who can be a top 10 guy when healthy.
Sands - Back-up. His best season (2006) he was average by NFL standards. He’s been below that before and after.
Kelly - Starter. Back-up to Sapp in 07 but if healthy he could start for most teams.
RDE - Back-up. Has beens and never was’ will battle for a shot to prove they can start.
Howard - Starter.
Morrison - Starter on most teams as LB but after last year you could argue he wouldn’t be a starting MLB on at least a dozen teams.
SLB - Back-up. Anybody here would be a bubble to get out of camp on most other teams. Will Hartwell step in?
Hall - TOP 10 - Pro Bowl CB Upgrade over starter level Washington.
Asomough - TOP 10 - Pro Bowl CB
Wilson - Starter - Upgrade. Started in the Super Bowl.
Huff - ??? - Huff is a Kwanie Harris / Gerard Warren type case. If he wasn’t a first round pick would he be starting? Move to FS may be his last shot before the Bust fairy starts hanging out by his locker.
The Raiders have improved dramatically since Kiffin took over. They’ve added starter talent at QB. HB, FB, TE, RG, LG, SS, and CB. They still need to have upgrades or players pan out at RT, C, LT, WR, RDE, DT, SLB and FS before they can call themselves talented. Eight “back-ups” starting is too many.

HAHAHA HEY NATION LOOK WHAT THE DONKIES DID TODAY!
LOOKS LIKE MR. HENRY IS SEEKING EMPLOYEMENT.
BRONCOS CUT TRAVIS HENRY
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 2, 2008, 12:07 p.m.
The Denver Broncos announced today that they have released running back Travis Henry.
“Although Travis has the ability to be one of the top running backs in the NFL, we have to make decisions that are in the best interests of our organization and its goal of winning a Super Bowl,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “We did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team.”
It’s not clear what Shanahan was referring to when he questioned Henry’s commitment. Henry has had multiple violations of the league’s substance-abuse policy, but in the past Shanahan has publicly supported Henry, including taking Henry’s side last year during Henry’s successful appeal of a positive test that would have resulted in a year-long suspension.
Henry signed with the Broncos as a free agent last year and played fairly well, rushing for 691 yards. But the emergence of youngsters Selvin Young and Andre Hall, plus this year’s rookie fifth-round pick Ryan Torain, plus the recent signing of Michael Pittman, means there wasn’t room for Henry in Denver anymore — especially if the coach questions his commitment.
Henry will now become an unrestricted free agent, and he’ll need to find work somewhere: He reportedly owes child support payments to the mothers of his nine children, and last year his lawyer said, “He doesn’t have any money.”

Although, how the women of Oakland would cope with both Henry and McFadden, the two most fertile men in America, in the Raiders backfield is a big unknown.

63 games and 4 interceptions later thankgod Stu got signed by another team so we are finnaly rid of him.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Travis is one toke from a lifetime suspension.

Stating that almost none of Kiffin’s 2007 cuts were signed anywhere else is completely inaccurate. “If” the statement said “many of the back-ups and young inexperienced players that Kiffin cut in 2007 were not signed anywhere else, that would be a true statement.
Darnell Bing signed with the Jets
Courtney Anderson signed with the Bills
Mike Williams signed with the Titans
Doug Gabriel signed with Cincy (later cut)
Zack Crockett signed with Tampa then Dallas
Kevin Boothe signed with NY Giants
Travis Taylor signed with panthers
James Adkisson signed with Green Bay
Dave Tolleson signed with NY Giants
Donovin Darius signed with Dolphins (later cut)
All of these players had some form of limited playing time. They all may not have been starters but they got playing time. Kiffin cut more back-ups that didn’t play or didn’t get much playing time than anything else. Sure he cut some staters but mostly back-ups.
Most of This years cuts by Kiffin have, I believe, found a new home. Stuey in Wash., Chris Car, Barry Simms and J.Porter in Jacksonville, Fab Wash. in Balti., Chris Clemons in Philly, and D.Rhodes in Indy.
Not saying that Kiffin is a bad coach, but cutting players is part of the game and is what the HC, especially a new HC’s does.

Wasn’t Tuz on that HBO show 1st and Ten…I remeber staying up late and watching it to see T&A when I was a kid.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
did henry “fly”in the donkeys system?the guy is a loser.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Goon-not one of those guys from last year started, and probably only 1 or 2 of those mentioned this year will start.that was the point, they’re not starting caliber players.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
I know I probably left off a few recently cut players like McClown comes to mind and Culpeper. McClown signed with the Dolphins and C-pep is looking for a starter opportunity. Good luck with that,C-pep. But what starter has Kiffin cut that couldn’t make it as a back-up on another NFL team? Remember, Raider starter not back-up.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Clemons, Porter and Carr left on their own. Kif didn’t cut them. Rhodes took a pay cut in order to leave. That realy isn’t what I would consider a cut either.
But no matter how you look at it the team is better off since it has trimmed the fat.
Porter was a biotche and will get jacked up in the AFC South. Enjoy that move jerry. I am glad your gone.

i hope you fans are as hard on huff when he wiffs as you were on schweigert.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
The clowns on BSPN were talking up JR, but had to end the segment saying Kif won’t be the coach. I am so sick of former players that think they know everything about the Raiders, yet none of them ever played here. Lousy reporting that is passed off as accurate. Sad, very sad.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Hey, it’s not my money but I think the Raiders would be nuts to pay LaMont Jordan $4.5 million bucks to be a 3rd/4th string backup. If McFadden and Fargas both get injured and Bush doesn’t have what it takes, the season is pretty much done and Jordan is not going to save it. Jordan has been consistently mediocre for the Raiders, averaging 3.8 YPC in each of his three seasons here. He finished last year with a big THUD averaging 2.15 YPG on 45 carries in the last 4 games he played. Am I the only person who thinks Adimchinobe Echemandu could match those numbers for about a TENTH of LaMonts salary?
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Lamont is still a Raider!!!!
NO BULL!!!!!
It’s on Jason Jones’ Blog!!!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Huff has wiffed just as bad as Stu. Remember him taking the 5 yard back flip when LT lit him up last year? If the front 7 don’t step it up, both Huff and Wilson will be going for long rides into the endzone.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I agree with Dick V #41 The Raiders don’t have any All Stars at the point of attack, either side of the ball.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Goon the question should be,what starter has Kiffin cut that starts for another team?that is what the conversation was about.also,Mccown and that other idiot(dc)weren’t cut, they were FA.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I can’t find it anywhere on the internet, but I could have sworn that the cut date for Jordan was not June 1, but June 3 or 6th…so don’t panic yet.
Can anyone confirm this?

SAD, SAD day…
Dakota,
It’s gonna be sweet as the LAKERS raise another Gold Ball and Kobe raises his first Finals MVP to go with his newly acquired hardware…
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:26 pm
per196-then why isn’t he ripped like Schweigert?

Lefty 12 Says:

Which year of cuts are you referring 2007 or 2008. Five out of the seven Kiffin 2008 cuts were starters and out of that five two are projected starters on their new teams. Chris Clemons and Jerry Porter. And Stuey believe it or not has a fighting chance to win the FS position in Wash.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:27 pm
BAG, only Dave Tolleson made a significant contribution to their new team. Kevin Boothe was a solid back-up but didn’t get much game time. The others never made much impression.
This season…Clemons will do okay in a limited role with the Eagles. Porter will show flashes in Jacksonville but isn’t the starter he claims is his. Carr is ordinary. Sims is old. Washington is a weed and Schweigert is useless. Only Rhodes will succeed, but he isn’t as good as Fargas, McFadden or Bush.

Evertday that sorry piece of schiete is on the roster is a day too long. What’s the hold up AD? Kick him to the curb quickly. He wasn’t worth a 7th round pick in april, so it isnt likely that he has improved his stock since then?

Jordans contract doesn’t count until the 1st game,so why care when he is cut as long as it’s before the final 53.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Goon,
No one is going to take you seriously if you keep referring to Clemons and Porter as players Kiffin cut. They were free agents, not cuts.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
If the secondary would produce more turnovers/interceptions the run defense would look that much better.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
They did not try to resign those two guys so they basically were cuts.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Goon-i’m talking about cut players starting for the teams that picked them up,not whether they started for us.the cuts for 2007 produced 0 starters for the team that picked them up.of the 2008 cuts, porter and maybe stu will be starters.clemons will be a situational pass rusher,in all probability.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Lefty
That’s one I can’t answer. He has yet to prove that he was worth the 7th overall pick. Some say it is because he was playing out of position. I think that is crap. Either you step up and hit people or you don’t. Stu did it once in a while, but I can’t remember the last time I saw Huff light anyone up.
If he doesn’t perform this year, cut your losses and lable him a bust. If that is the case I will forever blame Ryan for not getting him to perform like he should have.
The front 7 is going to either make or break the D this year.
