Higgins lights it up
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 at 6:51 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Second-year wide receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins caught another half-dozen passes or so Tuesday evening, from varying distances, highlighting the Raiders’ second minicamp practice.
It might be an exaggeration, but not much of one, to suggest Higgins caught more practices Tuesday than he did in any 10 practice sessions as a rookie.
A few highlights from the second minicamp practice:
– Wide receiver Javon Walker, still working his knee into shape, sat out the second practice, as did rookie wide receiver Arman Shields and defensive end Fred Wakefield. Both had knee surgery last year.
– Hard to believe Thomas Howard isn’t the fastest linebacker in the NFL after seeing him run 30 yards downfield stride-for-stride with rookie Darren McFadden and breaking up a JaMarcus Russell pass.
– DeAngelo Hall intercepted a Russell pass which was tipped on dive by Drew Carter. It was the third interception of the day for Oakland’s defense, all on deflections.
– Russell looked sharp on high-velocity throws and seam routes, while his long passes tended to be off-target and short.
– Kwame Harris illustrated both sides of his game on back-to-back plays. On the first, Jay Richardson blew past Harris for a would-be sack. On the next play, Russell found Justin Fargas for a short pass, with Harris well into the second level and ready to be a lead blocker.
– Andrew Walter connected on a perfectly thrown deep strike to Jonathan Holland, with John Bowie victimized in coverage.
– Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan continued to preach stripping the ball to defensive players.
“Take that ball from him. Take it from him and then feed it to him,” Ryan yelled to linebacker Ricky Brown, who was attempting to make a tackle on a shallow route to Will Buchanan.
– Wide receiver Marcel Reece has missed both practices because his class at Washington has not graduated, meaning he cannot practice with the team.
– Quarterback Brian White, an undrafted rookie free agent from Portland State, was not at either practice and will probably be officially released within the next day or two.
– Adimchinobe Echemandu, who earned a spot on the 53-man roster last year through his play in minicamps and training camp, is well down the pecking order this time around, and appears to be getting fewer snaps than undrafted free agent Louis Rankin.
– Both Sam Williams and Robert Thomas have been given reps as the first-team, strongside linebacker.
– Running back Michael Bush is showing excellent receiving skills, once reaching behind him for a finger-tip pass thrown behind him by Walter over the middle.
– Through two practices, the drafted rookie class apart from McFadden (safety Tyvon Branch, wide receivers Shields and Chaz Schilens and defensive end Trevor Scott) have been inconspicuous almost to the point of being invisible.
– During offensive line drills, Tom Cable urged on his players in creative, colorful language which can’t be repeated in print _ even in the more liberal confines of a blog. It was taken in by a few amused writers, as well as Raiders CEO Amy Trask, who was in the process of talking up the “Beyond the Eyepatch” feature on Raiders.com.
“I suppose you guys will be writing that up on your blogs,” she said.
If only.

I am a fan of 34+ years. I have have been Raider teased before. I would love to be surprised this year. Kiffin, watching games on TV after Sunday Church as the the bye week begins. Another season sacrificed to the appease the ego of AD.

Jerry can we hear some news on how some of the other Raiders summer pick ups our doing. If Brown and Williams getting the reps I guess the Hartwell experiment isn’t working out. I read that the guy we got from Tampa was looking good.
June 3rd, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Always interesting to see what 2nd year guys make a huge leap from their rookie years. Hopefully Higgins makes a push for playing time this year. Both as a returner and WR.
I think the Nation just has to take it easy on JWalk right now. Lets see how it all plays out through training camp and the preseason. JRuss needed a WR1 and Walk has proven capable in the past. No matter the outcome I think it’s worth the risk.

McFadden all for an early signing
June 3, 2008 7:16 PM
Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson
No one is more thrilled that the Raiders and Darren McFadden are starting to talk about a contract extension than McFadden himself.
After practicing with the full Raiders’ squad for the first time today in a mandatory minicamp, McFadden said he has no intentions of staying away from his new teammates. McFadden will have no worries if his agent, Ian Greengross, who has never had a client miss a training camp practice because of a holdout, and the Raiders’ brass can come to an accord. They are talking this week preliminarily about a deal.
“I’m excited that they are talking,” McFadden said. “I told my agent to get it done. It may be early June, but I think it’s great that they are talking. I don’t want to miss a minute of camp.”
McFadden vowed to be at camp on time during draft weekend after the Raiders took the Arkansas running back with the No. 4 overall pick. That was music to the ears for Raiders fans who had to deal with No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell’s holdout until September last year.
June 3rd, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Russell needs to pick it up and make throws.
I read a few threads back that his deep passes were short! How the hell does this guy come up short on a pass?
June 3rd, 2008 at 8:10 pm
nobody is talkin about drew carter and jruss having some chemistry happening i would not be surprised if he leads us in recieving

It’s a littlescary that Russell is throwing picks, but remember, he is throwing against the best secondary in the NFL, and it sounds like they’re gelling well together.

Hayes Daze 37, previous post 151:
You’re absolutely right. What players get paid is inter-graded within the NFL system and union contracts. I believe players get about 57% of all monies earned, which may be a little high from the owners point of view?
Another point that may be related to over paying draft players, and one we need to consider is that: “Ya, first round players do make the bucks and then the curve starts to drop dramatically, round by round by round. BUT, these draftee’s have been playing for free thoughtout their high school years and throughout their college years as well.”
Hears a thought, maybe 10% of all college revenues should be allocated to the NFL to help pay for their NFL contracts. The top universities are making big time money from their TV revenues & gate revenues and they pay nothing to their players, other than some token scholarship money toward their education? Hey, make that 25% of their revenues, Davis, Jones & Snyder would like that.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Riverside
A lot of that money is donated to the colleges. The more profit, the bigger the school, (and usually the better the schoo)
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Jerry good job on updating Russell’s development. I would really like to know how he is looking on the drag routes and the shallow crossing routes that have become the signature of the West coast offense: Jerry Rice taking a slant route and turning it up field for a big game.
Is Jamarcus on target: hitting the receiver in stride on the up field shoulder so that he can turn the short route into a big play?
He needs to be good at these passes to be effective in the West coast offense.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:21 pm
I like what Fargas said in his interview on Raiders.com…
This is the best coaching I have had…
On McFadden:
He is fast, real fast… He is on his game in the classroom…so he will progress quickly…
Great to hear McFadden is smart and has a good work ethic.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:27 pm

June 3rd, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I am glad to hear that JLH has come to play this year. Kiffin and the Raiders badly need that 07 draft class to bare fruit. So many of the draft classes have disappointed. The 07 draft class has tons of upside and potential: Russell and Miller both look like they are well on their way to making the draft class respectable. Russell has shown me through his dedication thus far that he is a leader. Nobody knows for sure how good of a QB he will be, but if he becomes the leader that LSU coach Les Miles says he was and can be, then the Raiders will be a great team for a long time to come. I have only seen two good QB’s in the last twenty seasons for the silver and black: Hostetler and Gannon. Both men made up for their deficiencies in talent with being great leaders on the field. They knew how to rally the troops and challenge the players to be better. More than a big arm, leadership is what Russell needs to bring to the Raiders.
The rest of the draft class has potential to be Russell’s supporting cast for a long time: Miller the go to tight end, Henderson the RT/ maybe eventual lt, Bush a hybrid between Kevin Faulk and Corey Dillon, Higgins a slot receiver with game breaking speed/ game changer in the return game, Oren Oneal the next road grading full back in the cast of Lorenzo Oneal, Jay Richardson solid contributer on the d line.
That is 7 players who have the potential to be starters for the Raiders. If they get anything out of Bowie ( sort of an enigma because of the Moss trade)this could be the best raider draft class ever.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:39 pm
I hear you guys. Good questions about our players and what they’re doing and what they need to do. From the types of routes they’re running to the kind they need to run for us to win. It’s great to hear that this is the best coaching, which makes sense. It better be after Shell, Turner etc. This is their 2nd year together. Hopefully Lofton will be able to contribute to our passing core.
YA, I know, this is only the first day of mini-camp and there is no physical contact, so it hard to really guage ones ability under game situations. But, all in all, things are looking up in most spots. Some of us are probably making more out of these little things, I’m guilty of that. My defense is: Hey, I’m starving right now, it’s the hardest time of the year. I’m looking forward to training camp, hoping things come to get with minimum injuries and then pre-season. Wish they would change pre-season to maybe (3) games TOP.
With (17) games actually counting toward division standings, and being an odd number, you wouldn’t have as many tie breakers, but that’s another topic for another day.
GO RAIDERS…go Lakers too. The Lakers game will give me something to watch Thursday nite.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Must have been the talk I had with the kid a couple of weeks ago, when I told him to stop looking at the competition and just compete Hahha.
I knew and have said that too many fans have written tis kid off way too soon. he is going to be a factor in the future of the Raiders. When I told him how impressed I was with his hands in college and that Cliff Branch wasn’t nearly as impressive on film at Colorado and he had a HOF career just cme out show the coaches what you can do. He is a better version of Wes Welker.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Guy’s I hope that those of us wh are very har on the rg. come to see some light at the end of tunnel, because we really have achnce t get things going Russell is a beast and s is MB and the rest of the running game. But most importantly we have a very underrated WR corp and time will bare that out.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
“Play earns praise
Rookie defensive tackle Red Bryant earned boisterous praise from teammates when he burst through the line on one play and upended rookie running back Justin Forsett.
blogs.thenewstribune.com/seahawks”
Vs.
“Through two practices, the drafted rookie class apart from McFadden have been inconspicuous almost to the point of being invisible.”
_______________________________________________________
Should have drafted Red Bryant in the 4th like I said…instead we traded up for jack schit and pass on Red, lol. Another brilliant move by speed infatuated Davis.
At least we still have Turd!
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:56 pm
ooh shoot i thought mistabrown killed him self
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
“Jay Richardson blew past Harris for a would-be sack”
Here’s hoping that this is a case of Richarson’s game improving dramatically rather than a case of Harris being Harris…
glass half full?
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Dicky V, please allow me to interject a few thoughts. One of the things that impressed me mostly about Russell when I studied him wa his accuracy in the short and intermediate passes and running and offense efficiently not just the bombs away type player but a tremendous game manager. The routes yur speakng of Dwayne Bowe made a living running those routes atg LSU and breaking tackles for RAC.
I know you really need to see it for yourself but he has the complete package trust me. You are going to see a QB that has very few weaknesses and I’m being very serious he is as skilled as Peyton Manning in this regard.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Glad to hear JLH is making strides…I would love for him to replace Curry in the lineup.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Sounds like the receivers are having a hard time holding on to JRuss’s passes. You have to remember that that guy throws a heluva ball and it will take the WRs some time to adjust.
Great Michael Bush update.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Dakota some times your worse than a backseat driver you see everything and yet realize very little. Jerry can’t comment on every single player in a couple of blogs IT”S EARLY, at least let camp get started in July and stop acting like the kid in the backseat constantly asking ‘are we there yet’
CHILL!!
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:07 pm
McFadden can’t use speed to dominate like he did in college. These Linebackers in the NFL are fast, Howard is a freak but there are others like him around the league. As for jerry mac describing McFadden as mercurial, maybe he hasn’t found a piano bar in the Bay Area.
Harris as Left Tackle is a joke. Walter should see PT because Russell is gonna get killed.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Wow..Between Thomas Howard and McFadden. We have some sick speed on this team.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:08 pm
BHP,
Quit acting like the class ho blowing the prom King Al Davis in the front seat of the car at every opportunity.
Swallow once in a while and maybe some blood will get to that brain of yours.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Kwame Harris at LT is some very scary sh!t!! Cable will need to pull another miracle this year.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Spawn, are you retarded? If so I apologize, but your typing/grammar is terrible. Im guessing you are either mentally retarded or just plain stupid.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Petrino,
I know its the NFL, but you also cant discount McFadden’s speed. He is going to blow past some guys this year. Thomas Howard is the exception to the rule.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
analyze this and analyze that all yall want brothers.
truth is nobody can be right and nothing can be said until the pads are put on…..NOTHING!
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Such language!! did I touch a nerve? just give it time young man. Raiderdom wasn’t rebiult in a day.
BTW how do you so much about that stuff? That blowing thing?? speaking from experience??
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
RaiderTay, there are plenty of fast guys in the NFL. Davis has drafted numerous track stars. If it was all about speed, why didn’t Davis draft Chris Johnson? He’s faster than McFadden. I don’t think McFadden will be able to “blow past some guys.” That rarely happens in the NFL. McFadden will have to juke defenders, make em miss, and break tackles…in addition to his speed.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
i am glad someone finally said that jeff hostetler was a great qb for the raiders. that man took a beating and always got up, he always showed heart even though his physical skills werent as good as other qbs, he had the entangables to make men follow him into battle even though it was a losing one most of the time. if jamarcus has heart like that we will see many years of great football and lots of wins…..sorry my man crush of jeff hostetler just came gushing out and now im fine….dont mix pain pills with the the raider kool-aid…wow where did that come from
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
BHP,
I just had to ask yo momma…
okay, that was third grade stuff, but you left yourself open again.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Dakota my mother’s been deceased for 15 years so exactly howdid you pull that off??
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
ummm, I was 16???
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Much better reportage, Jerry.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Agree with the sentiment on Hoss. When he got hurt in 95 the season went down the crapper.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:24 pm
ouija board???
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:24 pm
You still are mentally
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I contacted her through John Edward????
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:27 pm
LMAO @ Dakota’s #54 post. Definitely glass half full. Did we ever see Richardson generate a pass rush? I don’t wanna see Harris against Merriman.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:31 pm
BHP, with regards to your comments about Peyton Manning, you’ve probably heard me say this before: After Archie Mannings illustrious New Orlean Saint career, he was the color commentator for the Saints broadcoasts and he would bring Peyton down to the Saints practices. The Saints Head Coach at that time, Jim Mora Sr, would let Peyton run the first team Saint Offense, while Peyton was STILL A HIGH SCHOOLER!!! When Mora went to coach the Colts, he knew exactly what he was getting when they drafted Manning #1 overall. It’s not relative to compare Peyton to Jamarcus just because Peyton has been around NFL players his entire life and was playing with them while in his mid teens. Jam has not had that kind of fortune. For Jamarcus it was the exact opposite. While waiting for his contract to be finished, he was playing with high school kids, not even the kids from LSU. All that being said, I completely agree with you in that I am just amazed at how good this kid is going to be. You and I spoke after the season that if Jamarcus put in the extra work ala Manning and Brady look out!! Looks like that is happening. Look out!!
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:32 pm
BHP,
man I agree with you about JR, I have been saying it for a long time, best prospect net to Peyton.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:34 pm
And don’t start me on my Hostetler stories.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:35 pm
best prospect next to peyton in the last 10 years.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Oak,
whats up man? any ideas about whats going with Sands, why is he with the 2nd team?
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Dakota, grow up will ya? If you can’t say things like that to my face then your just a small minded coward hiding behind a keyboard.
show some maturaty.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Thanks Jerry.
The flip side of the strong arm QB - tipped pass INT’s. Russell is going to have to learn to throw with touch when he doesn’t need to fire a rocket. His deep throws coming up short is urely an accuracy problem and not strength.
We’ll know more about our line play when they get in pads but Richardson blowing by Harris is disturbing given that Richardson is hardly a pass rush guy.
Kiffin said at the end of 07 that the new 08 offense will be better suited to JLH’s talents. Let’s hope so.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Im glad JLH is doing well, I knew he can do it, now he needs to show what he can do as a PR.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Oak yeah this is going to be beginning of what I think is the most exciting team we’ve ever fielded.
Sure we still have a lot of work to do and still a little short on talent in some areas but. He is really a rare talent, sometimes it’s hard to believe he’s actually a Raider.
All I can say is get ready because you haven’t seen anything like this in Silver n’ Black. And I think to a certain extent all the unfair criticism even juices the kid further.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:46 pm
I dont understand how JR can have accuracy problems with his deep throws, that was his strength in LSU, and also the debate between him and Quinn was that JR was a better at accuracy in thr deep passes.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Faster speed. Russell will adjust. He has the arm to connect. (Hard to forget seeing him spot those deep balls against Notre Dame!)
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:52 pm
can someone tell me whats up with Sands? I had high hopes for that guy this season.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:52 pm
COW, Just watch the kid play, touch is really a strength of his sometimes he will take too much off.
I’m telling ya’ you have to see him play over season to really appreciate what he brings to the table. I don’t have the energy to delineate his skill set but he really is the total package.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:59 pm
COW,
“Kiffin said at the end of 07 that the new 08 offense will be better suited to JLH’s talents.”
Why is that? What is different in the offenses? Is the emergent of JR?
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:04 pm
What I love about JR besides his sick arm and being one of the biggest QB’s to ever play. Is this guy can move for a big man. When you look at him you would think that he would be a statue, to the contrary he has very nimble feet. Im not saying he is Vick or McNabb and he is not going to beat teams with his legs, but he has ample mobility to scramble for a 1st down to keep the chains moving.
He has just enough mobility to where it needs to be respected.
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Yes, the Kid can throw mid-range and deep ropes that McKown and Culpepper could not. Plus Bush (and now McFadden) to catch the short stuff.
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:08 pm
If anything it will be great to have some stability at the QB position. As long as JR stays healthy. That Culp/McCown flip flopping last year killed us.
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
we haven’t had stability since Gannon.
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I’d like to say a few things that I’m sure are shared in here.
We have IMO one of the great young minds in the game in Lane Kiffin, the talent that we’ve acquired recented (the last 2 years) will just allow him to do things that others dream about. I’ve aid before it may take him all of 3 years to really get a good feel for what it takes to win big i the NFL but when he does he may go down in Raider lore as the second best coach the Raiders have ever had. Big AL #1 of course but he na even surpass his exploits. I’ve watched him and he is soo different and intuitive. You can just see potential for greatness if he can just survive the early years he will be another Bill Walsh just yu wait and see. This kid has ‘IT’. Russell is very fortunate to have him and vice versa. The Raider Nation is very lucky to have them both at the same time.
GREAT THINGS ARE AHEAD!!……………period
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Agreed
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:26 pm
BHP,
I thought you had a thicker skin than that…guess not. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.
Maybe it was yo sista and not yo momma, lol.
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:41 pm
I hope you are right about Kiff. To be honest Im not completely sold on Kiff. He still has that deer in the headlights look to me.
Regardless, I support him as the Raider coach. I believe the Raiders greatly improved last year, even though the record didnt show it. I also consider the fact that coming off of the Shell debatcle anybody would look like Bill Walsh.
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Dakota, listen it’s not about thick or thin skin I just don’t do family members especially my mother she was very dear to me and I miss her.
That’s the kind of stuff I did in my youth. That’s all.
I hope your famiy is well, I’m sure you didn’t mean it that way, but I just don’t indulge in that sort of thing. Sorry to disappoint.
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
BHP,
Kiffin is another Bill Walsh?
Russell has the skills of Peyton Manning?
And you told ME to chill? Lol…dude, you need a reality check. Get your face out of Al’s lap and take a breath, you are starting to hallucinate. Enthusiasm is one thing, but that stuff is downright silly and way to premature.
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:55 pm
There is good reason not to be sold on him. He hasn’t done anything yet.
Potential is a dangerous word, but he has tons of it. Preparation and opportunity have met now results have to be acheived. So we’ll see.
But I’ve never felt better about what we have an where we are in a very long time. It’s as if we have something no one is aware of and we’re about to blow the top off. really shock some poeple.
So we’ll see what happens.
Adios! it’s been a long day.

Well Dakota we’ll just see what happens, OK with you??

Jeeez, some people have no sense of humor…sensitive about a yo momma joke…my gosh, this place is full of little girlz.
As George Carlin would say…another example of the pussification of this nation.

Hush, little BHP, don’t say a word.
Al’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird won’t sing,
Al’s gonna buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Al’s gonna buy you a looking glass
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Al’s gonna buy you a billy goat
And if that billy goat won’t pull,
Al’s gonna buy you a cart and bull
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Al’s gonna buy you a dog named Rover
And if that dog named Rover won’t bark
Al’s gonna buy you a horse and cart
And if that horse and cart fall down,
You’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town.
Sweet dreams BHP.

Dakota, you are a beautiful man!
June 4th, 2008 at 3:49 am
Dakota…
I find your remarks tasteless…
I lost my Mum when I was 28 old, and I don’t find any momma-jokes funny anymore, before that perhaps half laugh worth… Now I’m perhaps about to lose my Father too….
BHP, said he didn’t find it funny, and I understand him, I too miss my mum, its so weird not to have her around anymore… the same thing goes for Tardell Sands, he lost his Mu toom, and I understand why he didn’t have a great year in ‘07, but I hope he’ll bring his a-game in ‘08
Dakota.. I know you are all about fun and games, and thats really great, but when someone say please stop, then you should be man enough to respect that…
Hope this make you think once or twice before the next time you make a momma-joke
June 4th, 2008 at 4:08 am
Yo momma is so stupid she thought a quarter-back was getting change at a shop!
June 4th, 2008 at 4:29 am
Sorry to hear that LMN.. We don’t realized how much we miss them until there GONE!
On a lighter note did anyone else notice LK gotee?? Jerry compared him to TD(TONY DUNGY) Guess LK wants the mustache and the goat!?

Lane Kiffin is growing up, we will be so proud of him when he becomes an adult =)
June 4th, 2008 at 5:16 am
Hello Nation. So I happen to follow the Redskins as a second fave, and checked their blogs to see what, if any, reaction there was to Stu Schwiegert signing there. Answer: almost no reaction at all. I actually expected the hostile remarks about Stu “escaping” Oakland or something along those lines. But no.
This comment from some Washington fan caught my eye, though:
“Over the past 5 years it was the Raiders who had to pick up players from other teams that were not able to make the squad and bring them into Oakland to start.
It looks to have changed with Oakland rebuilding over the past 5 years. It is now other teams that are picking up the players who are not able to make the Raiders squad and bringing them in as possible starters.
Looks like Oakland has finally rebuilt the old AFC Championship team of the early 2000’s and finally has some great young and talented players on the team.”
Well ok then …

closet raider fan masquerading as a redskin fan…
June 4th, 2008 at 6:35 am
The one knock on Russell before last years draft was his accuracy on the long ball…highlight clips showed receivers (Bowe, etc.) making adjustments to get to the ball…
Hopefully he can fix this. The rest of his game seems ready to go…
June 4th, 2008 at 6:35 am

MC,
Stu made some comments regarding Moss…Haven’t been able to find this, although it seems interesting (for some reason)…
June 4th, 2008 at 6:47 am
You’re parsing dipthongs LMN? Whats the HUGE difference about? I always typed Schwanzgert myself.
June 4th, 2008 at 6:48 am
Like the other readers I happy to hear that the Raiders are looking good ,but the tackle positions do weary me. If they cant protect JMAC in passing situation it’s just going to make our run game less effective.
It’s good to hear about Howard but he wasn’t the question mark the Raiders had in their LB corp. Can we get a report on how the strong side LB competition is going.
We hear all of these reports about Nnamdi not practising ,but nobody asking the right question ,why hasn’t he signed his offer ,is because he wants more money for the year or is because he doesn’t want a year offer he wants to get a long term deal done now ,and the offer is a last ditch thing?
Can we get some answers
June 4th, 2008 at 6:50 am
LosT…
Lol, well I wish him the best… he is a great backup, thats for sure, he beat out many of our starters, but that says a lot about our former starters =)
June 4th, 2008 at 6:58 am
LMN,
I hope we got the better player at LT…Probably not saying much though…
June 4th, 2008 at 7:10 am
From Jason Jones, SacBee…
“There were some formations with Mcfadden and Fargas on the field together, as promised by Lane Kiffin”.
“Michael Huff stayed at free safety where his speed is evident. He’s quickly looking comfortable and jumping on routes”.
June 4th, 2008 at 7:18 am
I love it:
Burgess has already noticed one big change now that defensive tackle Warren Sapp has retired, saying it’s much quieter on the field.
Burgess said he thought Tommy Kelly would be even better playing at Sapp’s tackle position instead of shifting back and forth from end to tackle and other players like second-year end Jay Richardson had to step up their games.
June 4th, 2008 at 7:40 am
i’m thinking Swinegert…
something about that seems correct…
June 4th, 2008 at 7:47 am
oh well I liked the guy… but hated the football player..so to call him a pig is a bit harsh to me, but anyhooo….
June 4th, 2008 at 7:57 am
TW…
yeah I read that article too =) it gave a good vibe
June 4th, 2008 at 8:01 am
I don’t know why a lot of Raider fans want to trade Burgess.
June 4th, 2008 at 8:02 am
Oh and btw Jerry Mac wrote…
“Wide receiver Javon Walker, still working his knee into shape, sat out the second practice, as did rookie wide receiver Arman Shields and defensive end Fred Wakefield. Both had knee surgery last year.”
when we hired Fred Wakefield, it was as a blocking TE, when did he become DE? I mean he was a big fella, but to leave the O for the D???
Does that say anything about our stable of DE’s?
June 4th, 2008 at 8:08 am
Dakota - Your MOTHER wears army boots.
Go Raiders.
June 4th, 2008 at 8:17 am
NC Raider…Lil Stui was running his mouth on a Saginaw Michigan newspaper before the Foreskins picked him up. He said his teammates threw him under the bus and said the Raiders held on to him for a month while trying to trade him. Seems to me no team was interested in giving up a case of beer. Dude was absolute garbage and I am willing to bet he doesn’t even make the 53 man roster. Wait till Foreskin fans get a look at that jackass in preseason. They don’t know what a real piece of sh*t they now have.
June 4th, 2008 at 8:20 am
Wow, Dakota, you’ve made a lot of friends the last 2 days.
June 4th, 2008 at 8:28 am
LMN says:
when we hired Fred Wakefield, it was as a blocking TE, when did he become DE? I mean he was a big fella, but to leave the O for the D???
He’s still listed as a TE on the offical site. Probably a typo. I would have prefered C Long or Gholston so we wouldn’t be concerned about this.
June 4th, 2008 at 8:40 am
RaiderTW–Wakefield probably won’t even make the team so nobody really cares where he plays. Although we could use a good, young DE I think Richardson, Spires and Edwards will be ok for this year. McFadden has made everyone take notice and will be a superstar so I think we should be happy with the pick. Overall I think things are headed in the right direction. Only thing I would like to see is Jordan on a bus out of town and Asomugha signed
June 4th, 2008 at 8:41 am
What i can’t figure out is how Al has preserved his Jersey accent after spending so many years in Cali.

_______________________________________________________
This song goes out to all the sensitive souls in Raider Nation who have lost a loved one:
I’m sitting here I’m thinking back to a time when I was young…
My memory, is clear as day
I’m listening to the dishes clink, you were downstairs, you would sing
Songs of praise
And all the times we laughed with you, and all the times that you stayed true to us
Now we say…
I said I thank you, I’ll always thank you
More than you could know, than I could ever show
And I love you, I’ll always love you
There’s nothing I won’t do, to say these words to you
That you’re beautiful forever
You were my mom, you were my dad, the only thing I ever had was you, it’s true
And even when the times got hard, you were there to let us know…that we’d get through
You showed me how to be a man, you taught me how to understand the things, people do
You showed me how to love my God, you taught me that not everyone knows the truth
And I thank you, I’ll always thank you
More than you could know, than I could ever show
And I love you, I’ll always love you
There’s nothing I won’t do, to say these words to you
That you will live forever
Always, always and forever

June 4th, 2008 at 8:57 am
IMO..Here´s the most important “news” to come out of the first practice of the year, courtesy of the newly re-acquired Tui:
“There’s a buzz here, and guys want to win and turn things around. It’s fun. It’s a totally different feel - totally.”
Random plays, both negative and positive, from a June mini-camp are hardly an indication of things to come for individual players, but the overall environment and attitude that Tui talks about is a key element for the development of our team, that´s great news.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Here is another soul soothing message from Dakota for the more sensitive parts of the Raider Nation:

I’m surprised to hear Higgins is playing so well. He was only a rookie last year, but I was ready to write him off because he looked timid going after the ball in the regular season. Maybe he knows he has to play well or go home now.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:12 am
yOU’RE RIGHT ABOUT mCf,Raider4life, it’s something I can’t change like Ryan being there/NFL refs/Lane taking crap from Al & the media. So I’m happy with our team.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Let’s hope Higgins developes and isn’t know as the second coming of Alvis Whitted.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:13 am
Take the pressure off JaMarcus and the defense and run the ball with the three headed monster Fargas/Bush/McFadden. The ‘72 Dolphins went undefeated with an old backup QB for the majority of the season and their threesome of Csonka,Kiick and Morris. If we can stop the run I think we have a shot 8-8 possibly 9-7.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:13 am
Here´s a little more detail on Russell´s passing, from David White, sfgate.com
“Russell was short on both throws when McFadden had a full stride on Howard. His long ball has been off throughout the offseason, which is surprising considering his considerable arm strength.
Russell has been far more accurate with his short game. He zips the ball into small windows anywhere inside of 15 yards. Even his soft stuff is on the money most the time with screens and wheel routes.
The only problem Russell had with the quick passes was he throws too hard for the receivers’ own good. He threw three interceptions on Tuesday — to Michael Huff, Rashad Baker and DeAngelo Hall — and everyone one came on deflections off a receiver’s hands.
The receivers must adapt to his velocity because the last thing Russell needs to do is lighten up on his arm strength.”

I could have sworn Barry Sims signed with the Panthers so how could he be a free agent? Sims and Tyler Brayton joined the Panthers.

#139 bob - great post i agree 100%
June 4th, 2008 at 9:26 am
We all heard Kiff talk about changing the culture last year. Hopefully we make greater strides this year and finally have a team that adopts the traditional Raider attitude of Us vs The World.
I want to see a physically punishing team. I want to see Denver and SD and KC groan as we enter the 4th quarter knowing that we will be bruising up thier defense with a physical run game. We have all pieces for that.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:26 am
Huff24–Barry Sims did not sign with Carolina and is still a FA. That is one position I am really concerned about. Not that I would want Sims back along with 3 false starts, 2 holding penalties and 1 1/2 sacks per game. Kwame Harris though I hope improves a lot before the season starts cuz he had Barry Sims Jr. written all over him when he played across the bay.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:30 am
The Raiders are awesome, they will never lose again, Al Davis has been a genius over the past 25 years, Russell is the second coming of John Elway, McFadden will set records,
make love not war

June 4th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Al–I wanna see more personal fouls that really mean something. Back when Chuck Noll called George Atkinson the “criminal element” of pro football those penalties put fear into other teams. We need to get back to that kind of mentality. Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers need to have their heads knocked off when the come to Oakland so that everyone else knows the Raiders are back.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Chomp chomp chomp hummmhumm gulp. I’m eatin this stuff up. thanks Jerry
June 4th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Raider4life, that type of football you speak of is long gone…the game is regulated by far too many rules that disallow that type of play.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Ah…I read up on Barry Sims. The Panthers were interested in signing Sims but he was asking for a Multi-Year contract while the Panthers were offering a 1 year deal so the deal never happened. Sims obviously thinks hes better than he is and teams don’t want to take the gamble so that leaves him unsigned.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Quag–Hell no. Ray Lewis and Ed Reed still put fear into a lot of players.

June 4th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Punishing play needs to come from both sides of the ball. Both lines need to play with a mean streak and a nasty attitude. Our LBs definately need to turn it up another notch when they tackle.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:50 am

Some L.A talk from John Czarnecki on foxsports.com:
“There are many in the NFL who doubt that Ed Roski and his City of Industry stadium will become a reality, but that hasn’t stopped the rumors of what team will end up in forsaken Los Angeles, America’s No. 2 television market.
Up in the Bay area, both the 49ers and Raiders are struggling without grand palaces in which to play. The Raiders’ lease in Oakland expires in 2010, which puts this popular franchise in play anywhere. There’s no way that Oakland has the funds to do anything special for the Raiders.
The Raiders make the most sense to Roski because he figures he can purchase a share of the team.
NFL owners are very sensitive to the idea of Al Davis and the Raiders back in Los Angeles. I say they will fight that possibility as long as Al is alive.
It’s part jealousy and it’s part the memory of Al’s federal court victory that allowed him to leave Oakland for Los Angeles in the first place.”
It´s mostly speculation, but the lease does expire in 2 years, they have to be looking at their options.

TW, Amen brother.
Dakota, although your assumption that I was a victim is incorrect, I do deeply appreiate the care and concern that you have shown me.
It just goes to show what a happy and well adjusted family we are in Raiderland.
I quite agree with you that we all should be positive and look at the world through green tinted Al Gore glasses. As far as I’m concerned, the world will end in 2015 because of global warming.
I congradulate you on overcoming your iconoclastic views and bombastic nature and have finally seen the light that all men are evil in nature, that the white man is the root of all evil in the world, that women are superior creatures, and finally that the Eastern religion which speak of karma is the one indisputable true religion around.

some thoughts on Russell’s throwing.
1. Keep in mind that accuracy on long throws has a lot to do with the chemistry between reciever and QB. As JaMarcus gets used to his group of go-to recievers he will be more and more accurate with the long passes.
2. Same goes for the deflected passes being intercepted. As the recievers get more and more used to the velocity on “Death Star’s” throws, they will drop less passes.
Both of these problems will take some time to fix, but they don’t indicate any permanent problems with Russell, in my mind.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:37 am
I realise you guys are being facetious, but karma & reincarnation aren’t a religion.
I only cared about the Raiders being in Oakland because the identity, but damn, isn’t it about time Al got a new stadium? It’s been 30yrs. Even the consistantly bad teams have new stadiums.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Dakota, I can’t get you tube at this computer but I’m imagining it would be from “The Life of Brian” from Monty Python. Brian singing “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” while hanging from a cross.

June 4th, 2008 at 10:48 am
Did I really read that Jamarcus Russell’s long passes were off target and SHORT??? Short? That’s not a good sign for a guy who is supposed to have a rocket arm.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:53 am
TW,
I stand corrected. You are correct, WE DO need a stadium.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:02 am
TW,
You are right, Al deserves a stadium and the fans and the NFL should pay for it. Al has shown nothing but loyalty and respect for the community in Oakland and he should be rewarded accordingly.
If Al chooses to move the team from Oakland, I will embrace his decision 100%. Al has made so few poor decisions over the years that I think we should all give him the benefit of the doubt.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Bob Marley,
I guess the NFL didn’t learn anything the last go around with AD. With AD owning the territorial rights and a previous court decision in his favor, the NFL is risking bigger punitve damages. Also in AD’s favor is the fact they didn’t fight the move back to Oakland.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:03 am

Man, I hate to say I told you so guys, but I remember someone telling me Harris has skills to be a starting LT, he is been below avg player all his life what makes you think he is going to be elite player under cut block scheme? as far as our rookies go, I hate to say that even though I am not a fan of McFadden, I don’t see any other rookie producing, we selected bad players instead of focusing on fundamentals and drafting OL, DL and a strongside LB who can help our tow stars. I don’t think you guys believe Sam and Robert are the best players to play in that position. Let see if after we cut Jordan, we go after some REAL talent instead of some whack players we have now.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:07 am
BTW, I still believe that Bush can be a star in this league and a one two punch with fargas and having Dorsey playing DT stopping the run, we would definitely been 10-6 team but now I am hoping I am wrong and some of you guys are right and end up atleast 9-7
June 4th, 2008 at 11:08 am
where do yall really think our raiders will be playing in 2 years? would it still be in oakland?
June 4th, 2008 at 11:09 am
I would be sad if the Raiders do move out of The Town, since I live in the Bayola, and can get to the H.O.T in 30 minutes. That being said, I would like to see the Raiders get a state of the art stadium, in any (California)area, which will increase their revenue. I could live with that, and would still find a way to go to some games.

The Raiders need to get Jason Taylor to play RDE opposite Burgess and our defense will be top ten. Then acquire another proven, stud receiver, (ocho cinco, even though that’s looking more and more like a pipe dream), to create some serious competition between Carter, Curry, and Walker.
If we get Taylor, we will make the playoffs as a wildcard. If we get Taylor plus a proven receiver, we win the AFC West. Nuff Said.
Go Raiders, A’s, and Warriors! Town Business.

TW, I personally think blame can be spread around to all parties involved including Al. When you rock the boat as much as he does, sometimes you capsize.

No city will deal with Davis. The Raiders are stuck with Oakland until he’s gone.

Jason Taylor? Yeah signing “father time” Trace Armstrong worked so well. Besides, he wants to play one more year. Why would he leave a rebuilding team for another rebuilding team?

Bernard,
“Star” cannot be found therefore I will be his walker. I gotta get his collar and leash before we leave for his aromatherapy treatment and yoga class.

STR,
1. Al already tried LA, I dont see that happening again.
2. Oakland doesn’t have a lot of money for a new stadium, but I am betting that with the A’s leaving, and the current Mayor of Oakland (Ron Dellums) getting a lot of criticism for that, there will be a lot of pressure on the Oakland city government to keep the Raiders in town, it will be a hot-button issue on coming elections.
3. The stadium site in Dublin is a pretty good idea, but I dont see anybody in that (read government officials) embracing a stadium being built in that suburban area.
4. The northern tip of Alameda actually has a lot of open land from the old Navy base there. Most of it was slated for development into housing, but with the declining housing market, there might be some consideration of building a stadium to stimulate the project. (If anyone has ever seen Mythbusters, this is where they film a lot of their testing, it is a real nice site for a stadium, with views of the SF skyline)

Bernard Petrino,
AD will deal with any city except L.A. proper and their ignorant Coliseum Commission which screwed AD with false promises the last go around. The suburbs around L.A. will gladly deal with AD. The trick is to keep the NFL from interferring like they did last time with the Hollywood Park Stadium and the Carson Stadium.
The proposed L.A. Stadium is going to be built by the same group that built the Staples Center.

Bottom line, the Bay Area can only support one stadium project. Whoever gets the committment is the team staying. The other team leaves.

I never thought of this idea for a location of a stadium, but it actually makes alot of sense. I work in Alameda and you are 100% right. Lots of unused waterfront land space with beautiful views of the bay and SF skyline. Excellent idea.

I dont know if the bay-area can only support one stadium project, but it is becoming more and more apparent that it is tough for the bay-area to support 2 football teams. Al Davis is definitely paying close attention to the 49ers bumbling attempts at getting a new stadium though. Their mistakes will be his lessons learned. I can see a new stadium in Oakland or Alameda getting done as part of a much larger infrastructure development project. With the construction sector suffering so much lately, it is good business for Oakland to get a stadium built right now, along with some much needed civic improvements.

EXla, Davis was a fool for moving the team to LA before he got real guarantees about renovating the LA Coliseum. Same deal with Oakland and the “verbally guaranteed” sellouts. Face it, Davis has made a bunch of bad moves over the past 25 years. He is not the same conniving shark who screwed Wayne Valley out of the team in ‘72.

Exla,
That was a great video, and I feel really bad for those people aboard the train when it caught fire at the end…I hope they all made it out alive. I have had enough of all these senseless deaths in the world.

BBB,
I love Mythbusters. One of the best shows on TV, and even though I have only seen the site via Mythbusters, and even though I have no engineering or architectural background or knowledge, I believe your recommended site for a new stadium is just the
