Jordan doesn’t practice
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm in Oakland Raiders.
LaMont Jordan was released from practice but remains with the Raiders.
Jordan met with coach Lane Kiffin Tuesday morning and was told he wouldn’t practice as the club examines its options with regard to moving him off the roster.
Translation _ the Raiders are hoping to gain something in trade, which almost certainly won’t happen unless Jordan, scheduled to make $4.7 million this year and $5 million next season, is agreeable to reworking his contract for his new team.
More quick hits from Tuesday’s mandatory practice.
– The only absences were Jordan and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who has not signed his exclusive franchise free agent tender and not eligible to practice. Kiffin said he hoped Asoumgha might be on the grounds over the next two days, but wouldn’t speculate as to when the cornerback would actually be under contract.
– Those who did not practice because of injury were wide receiver Ronald Curry (foot), defensive tackle Tommy Kelly (knee), strong safety Jarrod Cooper (knee) and center Jake Grove (knee). Curry will not practice during this minicamp but could be running next week, Kiffin said.
– Defensive end Derrick Burgess, who doesn’t attend voluntary sessions, stepped in as the starting left end and at one point abused right tackle Mario Henderson in a would-be sack of quarterback Andrew Walter.
– Walter made one nice throw in a seven-on-seven drill to Zach Miller in the seam, but overall had a rough practice, missing a handful of throws and losing two snaps from center.
– Walter also made a throw some 20-yards downfield to rookie running back Darren McFadden which put on display how dangerous the Raiders’ top draft pick is. Fellow rookie Tyvon Branch narrowly missed breaking up a pass on a dive, McFadden caught the ball behind him, and was able to turn and run up field.
– Marques Tuiasosopo got limited work behind Russell and Walter but had his moments and looked comfortable in a system similar to the one he played in his first three years with the Raiders. He laid in one nice throw to Chris McFoy on a seven-on-seven drill over Chris Johnson, prompting defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to say, “C’mon, C.J.”
– First team offensive line remains consistent with past camps _ Kwame Harris at left tackle, Robert Gallery at left guard, Chris Morris at cetner, Cooper Carlisle at right guard and Cornell Green at right tackle. The second team line finds Seth Wand at left tackle, Paul McQuistan at left guard, John Wade at center, Mark Wilson at right guard and Henderson at right tackle.
– No big surprises defensively, with the defensive line lining up right to left as Jay Richardson, Gerard Warren, Josh Shaw and Burgess. Terdell Sands got most of his work with the reserves.
– Fargas, whose receiving skills are largely suspect, made a terrific catch on a lob over the middle from Erik Meyer despite being intefered with by Malik Jackson.
– Tuesday’s practice had considerably more dropback passes from the quarterbacks than previous sessions attended by the media. Russell did most of his best work in drills and seven-on-sevens, and often misfired during team sessions.
– Free safety Michael Huff intercepted a pass which deflected off the hands of tight end Tony Stewart with the offense running plays from the shadow of its own end zone. Moments later, Rashad Baker intercepted a deflection as well, only to have the ball stripped by Drew Carter with Johnnie Lee Higgins recovering.
– Higgins, who did little of note in previous practices attended by the media, had some good moments, including one in which he laid out to catch a pass from Russell with his hands away from his body, holding on to the ball as he hit the ground.
– Receivers coach James Lofton appears to be interacting well with the receiving corps. During one drill, Raiders receivers must run through a bar shaped like an upside down U, getting low enough to get their heads underneath, and then come back through another one coming out of their break.
On one pass, wide receiver Will Buchanon was criticized by Lofton for giving up too much space on the outside and being forced out of bounds by a defender.
– Defensive end Greg Spires closed the first practice with a pass rush that blew up an offensive play.
– Drew Carter scorched Stanford Routt on a corner route and hauled in a medium-deep pass from Russell during a seven-on-seven drill, with Routt a good seven yards away at the time of the catch.
– Drills featuring short passes to backs over the middle, defended by linebackers, contained repeated instances of linebackers grabbing jerseys and holding to try and stay close, with Robert Thomas, Ricky Brown and Edgerton Hartwell among the offenders.
Will check in later with some observations from Kiffin, players and a report on the second practice . . .

June 3rd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
More and more it looks like Mario Henderson is a bust……
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Jordan will be cut soon, I hope.
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
“Russell did most of his best work in drills and seven-on-sevens, and often misfired during team sessions.”
That’s not good; and
“Free safety Michael Huff intercepted a pass which deflected off the hands of tight end Tony Stewart with the offense running plays from the shadow of its own end zone. Moments later, Rashad Baker intercepted a deflection as well, only to have the ball stripped by Drew Carter with Johnnie Lee Higgins recovering.”
That’s really not good if Russell was playing QB…When Huff Picks you off, even off the hands of the TE, it is a very very bad sign for your skills as a QB, lol.
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:36 pm
not good news in terms of JR errors in team drills - but, i suppose, this sort of thing is expected when it comes to rookie QB’s.
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:36 pm
You’re not going to get anything for Jordan when you telegraph your intentions like that.
Turd, with the second string?
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Jordon is being given the treatment by Al Davis and rightfully so.
People who think this or that…. Davis respected Rhodes and the way that was handled and gave him his release. Clearly LaMont took the Raiders for a ride and got that big payday and didnt show he ever deserved it.
I dont blame the Raiders 1 bit that he is a bystandard. Why release him now when he can get in mini-camps and get a headstart on being successful.
Good job Al, you screw the boss like Jordan has done, you get yours on the back end
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:38 pm
I wont call Henderson a bust cause its burgess who went by him not some no name player and he is a 3rd round draft pick. Plus he still needs more time.
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Looks like the Turd has been flushed from the starting lineup…

Evidently the plan for Jordan is to re-negotiate his salary down to a reasonable level and try to trade him somewhere for somebody or something (a low draft choice or a dozen footballs?) Maybe some team has already expressed interest in him, otherwise why go to all the trouble?
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Jerry,
Is it possible to get more info on the injuries. Specifically Curry’s and Kelly’s.
Sounds like Drew Carter is ready to go this year.

ORALE DUDE HAD ME F#*!@% UP!!
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Hows Javon Walker doing? Sounds like Drew Carter may be our feature WR this year.
I wouldnt seat Burgess doing that to Henderson. He abuses a lot of tackles. Thats why he went to the probowl.
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
good update, but im wondering why nothing on bush. did he even run through some drills?
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Lamont Sucks, I had high hopes for him when we 1st got him, he had 1 good season under Norv(1000plus rushing and 70 plus catches) and that was it, but after that nothing. Last season he started strong and got hurt again, after what sapp and others said about him and his off season shape………I just want him out.
June 3rd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
My sources have caught a snapshot of Lamont Jordan 15 minutes after his discussion with Kiffin ended:

key word that Jerry used to describe burgess vs. mario henderson…”abused”… i hope you guys are right, but we all know mario henderson was a reach/project type draft pick, a lot of these type of picks turn out to be busts….

they have the fins and falcons at 32 and 31, but there alot more teams that will be worst than the raiders this season:
KC
Jets
Bills
Texans
Lions
Rams
and maybe Denver

#9 Peach-
If the Raiders are holding Jordan out of practice then he is gone–probably sooner rather than later. That pretty much means he is more valuable to them as healthy trade-bait than as a player. I think trade talks with some team are probably already in progress
#6 Dakota
A ball bouncing off a receivers hands is not really the QB’s fault unless Jamarcus is putting so much “heat” on his throws that they are uncatchable. I have always thought it’s unfair to charge the QB with an interception when a catchable pass is muffed by a receiver. In baseball, when an outfielder drops a catchable ball, he is charged with an error and the pitcher is not charged with giving up a hit.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:11 pm
#0th? LOL THis will be the 30th time the Raiders go to the playoffs when predicted to suck =)

June 3rd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
With fantasy football right around the corner and being that I’m sick of fantasy baseball already. I would like to hear from some of the experts in here.
In what round would you take McFadden? And what other Raider would you take as a first pick per position? Say when you select your first tight end would you take Miller?
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
South
it’s on the NfL network the NFLTA its on every day at 4pm pt. the started this mon talking about the fins today about the Falcons and wed about the raiders and ther will do that for 32 days covering the team ranked the worst to the best by the fans.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Rusell is worrying me, what about you guys? Maybe he just had a rough morning, lets see what he does in the 2nd practice
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:14 pm
I guess this is the first time this pre-season where JaMarcus’s had live bullets flying around.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:14 pm
If they come to play, the Raiders will be able to sneek up on teams this year. A lot of people think the Raiders are going to suck this year.
Also doesnt matter where Jordan goes. They will only get a good three games out of him. He cant sustain it. He’ll spend the rest of the year on IR.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Thanks for the post Jerry. Been feening to hear details from mini-camp.
Ok, now i can get back to work.
Have a good one.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Looks like Mr. Sands has disappointed the coaches again this offseason. I suspect weight/conditioning problems, which is a huge bummer for our already porous run D. Al, get us some inside help please.
PAGING MR. JACKSON….GRADY JACKSON.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Jamarcus is a rookie…I was just playin’, I am not worried about him. Besides, we are going to rely on our running game for the first half of the season anyhow…then we will unleash Russell!
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Raider O
I would take McFadden high. The Raiders are an excellent run blocking team. McFadden will have a great carreer here. As far as taking Miller at a high pick, he is deffinantly worth it, but the world is full of Raider haters, and people don’t even understand how good he is, so I would say he would probably last a while in your fantasy draft, but with J-Rock in his first real year, I would look for Miller to have a great year beacuse there will be a lot of checkdowns to TE’s and RB’s
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Yeah, I think Peach#9 is right. Al ’s giving Jordan the business.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
If they trade LJ, hopefully they can get a player in return. Hopefully its not a 5th round pick or somethin.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
When we signed LaMont, it was Norv’s OC (name escapes me, but he always wore a floppy hat) who coached him for the Jets. If that guy is still coaching in the NFL, he owes us big for recommending that POS.

The raiders will be great in rushing but with 3 RBs sharing the load, I think the most 1RB will have is 900-1000yards max, Miller will be a great asset for JR but Gates and Gonzo will put better numbers i think specialy Gonzo cause him and Bowe are the 2 players that can catch on that sh!t people call team.
OH by the way I dont play fantasy football, but thank you anyways.

June 3rd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Lamont’s agents will be allowed to search for a willing trade partner, but his contract will need to be renegotiated.
Prediction here is that Jordan will be willing to look for a trade, but the best offer hinted to come his way will be well below what he thinks he’s worth. Then, he’ll be released to find his way — and a new contract for less than 1/2 the value of his current one.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Sands is the designated 2 gap NT, supposedly.
Warren and Kelly the penetrators. Now, has Josh Shaw replaced Turd?

I was so confident of our defense with hall and gibril added and huff moving to his natural pos, but now that dont mean nothing unless we have a Dline, TK will need time maybe will not be at 100% till med season or the next maybe, I had high hopes for Sands and Warren, but now…… I’m really starting to worry.

The Front 7 still depends on Kelly/Sands. They are both unproven. Kelly’s repaired ACL is a HUGE question.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Bill,
I’m not dissing the 2 teams you stated but f@#k the broncos.
Now the jets have problems rushing, and some at QB, also WR are needed, now on defense they still need work.
The Bills are different they have a good offense, young too, but the problem is defense, PASS DEFENSE was bad last year, really bad.

Going back to post 72, I dont think it will be 3 RB’s carrying he load exactly. I think the “hot” guy will get the biggest load. Look what Adrian Peterson did to Chester Taylor lastseason, Taylor only got the rock when AP was tired or out of commision. I have a feeling DMAC will do pretty much the same thing this year. love Bush, and Fargas is a true Raider if ever there was one, but I think DMAC’s performance will so thoroughly trump theirs that he will be the feature back by week 5 or 6

Dakota, post 77:
On the link you posted that Denny Burkholder from CBSSports.com, staff writer, sure enjoyed blasting Raiders fans. Typical, most sports writers don’t understand us or our passion or our tradition or what this Raiders thing is all about, and they like to lump us all as idiots and gang bangers. It gets old after a while.
Side note from earlier post about our Raiders being picked 30th by sports fans. That doesn’t surprise me.
Most people out there following the NFL don’t really pay attention to other teams, outside theirs, and many don’t really get into their own team. The exceptions would be fantasy players and “passionate fans” who live and die by what their NFL team does. Speaking for myself, I have died these last five years. I can’t imagine another bad year and that’s why I’m so optimistic, going out on the limb and claiming 11-5 minimum, and feeling and hoping for 12-4 or 13-3.
Until we play the first pre-season game against the winers, mini camp won’t mean much, training camp will mean much more and pre-season the first real preview of what we got going. Hopefully, pre-season will make us confident about our opener against the donkeys.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Fantasy Footballers…
NEVER select as your #1 RB a guy who is used in a system as a part-time back — unless his part is known to be larger than his teammates’ roles.
NEVER select as your #1 QB a guy who has only started 2-games in his career.
McFadden will share the load — with no indication he will get the majority of carries…yet. Adrian Peterson-like results are what we’d like to see, but can’t be expected (can always dream, though!).
JaMarcus, like McFadden, still needs to prove he belongs in the NFL, and both should be good picks — but neither should be penciled-in as #1 before they’ve done anything.
Kind of like thinking we can reach a 12-4 regular-season record this year…it CAN be done, but it’s not very likely. If you want your fantasy team to have a ton of potential, but to stay competitive, don’t make McFadden or JaMarcus your first picks at those positions.
Zach Miller has shown he belongs, and is already better than 2/3’s of the league’s starters at TE — he’d be a solid #1 choice.
No Raider WR has shown anything to indicate he deserves to be a #1 on any fantasy team right now.
Raiders in FFL are much like the Raiders in the NFL right now — way too much to prove, and it will take some risk to find out if they’re worth the investment.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I heard that many sports bloggers are Fantasy People and/or Degenerate gamblers?

Peterson is special, I dont wanna compare Dmac to him cause Peterson did have a great season beyond expectations. still the vikings over worked him IMO, I wanna see Dmac split time with fargas and Bush with Bush being the short yards RB and yes i think Dmac will win the starting job by week 5 but he will still split the load with fargas for 2 reasons: make it easy for JR and I dont think Dmac is a 300 plus carry back in the NFL.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
he didnt say what kind of rum…..KK
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
I would take McFadden as my #1 running back ina second, sorry Hayesdaze. Fargas got 1000 yards in 8 games, imagine what McFadden can do. I think AP like numbers CAN be expected when the RB in question is running behind a proven line. I’s like Rathman said, or maybe it was KNapp, “We expect a certain standard, and we will play the guy that is playing to that standard” just because we have 3 badass RB’s doesnt mean we wont have a feature back0., Im betting McFadden will win that role before midseason.

Lamont was a horse for three games. He looked outstanding. If it was poor conditioning that did him in, then I hope he gets it together and goes somewhere that needs a back and gets some redemption (how about the Cardinals?).
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
What’s up with Michael Bush? Is he practicing? If so, how’s the kid looking in drills? I’m still hoping this guy was a 4th Rd steal in last year’s draft….quick feet and good balance for such a big guy when I saw him run in college….
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
good post Hayes.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:07 pm
i second that C4. i dont think he was taken at #4 and gonna be offered a hefty contract to share the load.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Of Course, everything I say is optamististic opinions and speculations, but I can’t wait to see what happens next season. I haven’t been this excited since we got Jerry Rice to line up opposite Tim Brown, and that led to a trip to the SB, so lets keep our fingers crossed. Im out Nation, I’ll check back after 5;00 for 2nd practice updates
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
McFadden has more than proven that he is willing to share his load.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Preseason dont mean much either remember Art Shell went undefeated in preseason. Thats why I intentionally try not to watch preseason. It will warp your perception of teams.
The fact is we wont know much until they suit up against the donkeys.

C4 how many carries westbrook has in 1 game?
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Great to hear DMac catching the ball and making some plays in the passing game. Thats very encouraging.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
well its past 5 down here in texas, gotta pick up my girl in 20 minutes. be back on later tonight though. peace out until then my nation brothers.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
15-20 and he is a great pass reciever, thats what Dmac will do for us.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I recently re-checked my data and realize I made a mastake. The Raiders WILL win the Superbowl this year!
Unfortunately, as the Raiders are driving down the field for the winning touchdown, Al Davis will suffer a heart attack and be taken to the hospital by ambulance with his son Mark accompanying him, and will not witness the victory.
Commissioner Goodell will present the Lombardi Trophy to Amy Trask who will take over as GM of the Oakland Raiders.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Here to the worst off season back the Warren sapp has ever had to team up with: his ass should have been working hard instead of hanging out in the off season. That is why he would get hurt.
DMAC will split carries with Justin fargas. I expect Fargas to get 15/ 16 carries a game, and Dmac to get 13 0r 14 carries. Micheal Bush will get spot duty here and there. Fargas and Dmac will both rush for 1,000 yards.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
each back has his own style, i dont see Dmac as LT or LJ, someone who can carry the ball 300+ a season, but what he can do in the open field is a lot better than the 2RBs can do. I think he is more like westbrook but faster and can run better from the I formation.

No way! McFadden plus a healthy Bush = Fargas back to his rightful place as third stringer.

Jerry Mac…. Nice work, although that was cutting it pretty close on your 60 min. deadline.
We are looking forward to your next report, no later than 7:30 P.M. PDT.
Yeah, and what in the “Wide World Of Sports” is a goin on, with Mike Bush?????????

Good point on westbrook, he doesnt carry too many balls, but how often do the Eagles run? (Hardly Ever)! Tell me this in tur, how many catches does Westbrook get in 1 game, and how many total yards and TDs.
My point is, it doesn;t matter how you get the yards/points, its how many you get
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:21 pm
C4 — You made my point by stating, “imagine what McFadden can do”…I do imagine what McFadden can do, and it makes me smile.
But, being the inventor of FFL as much as Al Gore was the inventor of the internet, I know a few truths — one of which is to not pencil-in rookies as #1’s on a fantasy team until they have proven themselves.
McFadden is probably rated a good #2 RB (or a great prospect to have at #3) for FFL right now, and hopefully will prove even better by the end of the preseason. But, he shouldn’t be one of the first RB’s to go; unless your draft follows some eye-popping evidence of his dominence in the preseason, he should not be your first choice.
Now, before I hear too much grief about that statement, please note that I personally think McFadden’s got the talent to be a top-5 back for his generation…just trying to be realistic about his FFL value as it stands right now.
Keep it real, dawgs.

Re Jerry’s practice blog: It’s amazing how many people can get drunk on about 1/10th of a glass of Raider Kool-Aid.

mcfadden was penciled in as the number the 16th best player for fantasy football this year.

C4
the eagles were 8th in rushing West had 270+ for +1300 yards and 90 rec for 770 yards, IMO Dmav will have 180-210 for 900 -1100 yards and 50+rec for over 500 yards.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
by the way i think the numbers I posted are great for a rookie. what do you think?
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:35 pm
One way or another, Michael Bush will carry the ball as much as Fargas by the end of the year. Justin will either get hurt, or Bush will just beat him for carries.
Like all our other big IFs…if he’s healthy, Michael Bush just might be the one back on this team who can handle 300-400 carries per year. If Bush is anything like in his college days, Fargas will be a great burst of energy off the bench when he’s needed to be. That would be more than ideal.
If that happens, the irony will be that next year, when Fargas is asked to re-structure his contract, it will be to help give Bush a Fargas-like raise in pay.

NEW POST!
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:38 pm
I dont think Fargas will need to restructure his contract i think its based on performance.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
O — If those numbers happened, and the team was winning, they’d be great.
June 3rd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Would AL trade LaMont, to the Donkeys for one of Shanarat’s extra sun tan booths?
Shanarat needs another RB and AL doesn’t get out in the Sun as much as he used to. Could be a win/win deal.

it was jimmy ray that recommended we pick up that waste of money. I was for it and was hoping that he would succeed. But he didn’t and now it’s time to move one with DMac.

Lakers win 4 games and Championship this series. Raiders win 4 games this season.

I hope jordan redoes his contract.. then gets traded to MIami and a 4th for JT. We’ll throw in a DL.
JT is only playing one.. two year tops… so know one is willing to give more than a 4th. (i can dream)

Best blog to date. Regarding Jordan, the Raiders have the intiative because they can sit him out to prevent him from catching on the another team’s system (Broncos) and then cut him at the last possible minute. Not bad logic considering the opener.
