Mandatory camp concludes
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, June 5th, 2008 at 3:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Except for pesky little details such as blocking and tackling, the Raiders seemed to have gotten everything they wanted out of their mandatory minicamp, which concluded Thursday with a single practice.
Through five practrices, JaMarcus Russell looked comfortable, and most important, very efficient in establishing himself as the quarterback of the future in front of the entire roster.
Indications are Darren McFadden is an explosive addition to the backfield to go along with Justin Fargas, with Michael Bush an intriguing wild card.
Defensively, a secondary which had been repeatedly victimized over the first two days came away with a pair of red zone interceptions, one by Stanford Routt against Russell and another on a pass which bounced off wide receiver Drew Carter’s hands and into the fortunate hands of rookie Tyvon Branch _ who drew praise from the coaching staff for kneeling in the end zone rather than bringing it out.
The Raiders also rushed the passer well, although that could have something to do with the offense getting its tackles up to par _ an issue which will be dealt with in a future blog.
Quick hits from Thursday’s lone practice:
– Another tough day in terms of drops for Johnnie Lee Higgins, not that Lane Kiffin seemed to notice.
“I think Johnnie Lee had a really good camp, continues to improve throughout the offseason, get stronger, faster and more confident,” Kiffin said.
– A prime example of players understanding the value of Russell occurred when Jay Richardson broke free on a pass rush, reached over and tapped Russell’s arm, then wisely disnengaged and backed off.
It happened on a first-down play with the first team offense playing the first team defense. The offense went three plays and out, with Kalimba Edwards applying pressure on third down.
– The second team offense managed a single first down on a McFadden run in their set against the second-team defense , resulting in another Shane Lechler punt after two Andrew Walter incompletions.
– Third-team quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo guided his unit to the 9-yard line, throwing 17 yards to Justin Griffith and 17 yards to Chris McFoy, but was removed after forcing a ball into the end zone that Darrick Brown intercepted out of bounds. Walter came in, but the Raiders managed only a 22-yard field goal by Sebastian Janikowski.
– Illustrating how important the Raiders think it is for Russell to avoid errors, the most vocal praise came when he threw a ball away out of the back of the end zone, with offensive coordiantor Greg Knapp shouting “smart,” holding his hands aloft and then gesturing toward Russell.
– Lecher, after lounging for the better part of the first two days, nailed a pair of skyscraping punts and probably will not be seen again until July in Napa.
– Bush continued to excel as a receiver and look smooth and potentially powerful as a runner, but as Kiffin noted there is simply no way to know how good he is until the Raiders get to Napa. He looks closer to Earl Campbell than Nick Bell, but until he runs over a would-be tackler or displays the skill of burrowing into a hole on third-and-inches for a first down, it’s strictly guesswork.
“Michael’s obviously a big guy. Now we’ve got to figure out is he a big guy that’s a pounder,” Kiffin said. “That’s what we’ve got to see. We haven’t seen him with his pads on doing it. Just because you’re big doesn’t mean you’re a great short-yardage back. So we need to figure that out. Is this a guy a legitimate, bruising, pounding 245-pound back? We won’t know that until preseason.”
– The deflection off Carter’s hands in the end zone was a rarity through three days. The free agent has been the Raiders most impressive receiver and could move Ronald Curry to his former role as a slot receiver once he recovers from foot surgery.
“I don’t mention him sometimes because I expect him to do what he’s doing, but he’s going it every day, and I love the work ethic that he brings,” Kiffin said. “He’s just one of those guys that’s going to do everything he can to get out on that field and he’s never going to complain about anything. He’s going to play as hard as he can. He’s going to block as hard as he can. He’s going to go after every ball like it’s a game. He ends up on the ground 10 times a day because he’s practicing like it’s a game.”
Go ahead and assume Kiffin won’t mind if that quote is relayed to Curry. Two weeks ago Kiffin said he thought Curry might be ready for the mandatory camp.
– Richardson was working on his pass rush skills at right end, so much so he was called for offsides at least twice during the three-day camp. Kiffin said he is seeing progress in that area.
“I think Jay’s developing a pass rush. That’s what he lacked last year,” Kiffin said. “He played the run very well for us and has continued to improve on that. The pass rushing and the third-down part of it, he didn’t leave him out very much because of that last year. We’re giving him a shot to take that. Again, we’re not going to rotate just to rotate. If we can find a guy that does both, we’ll leave that guy in there whole time. Jay knows that’s where he needs to improve to play more.”
– Napoleon Kaufman, probably the only Raiders running back since the club returned to Oakland in 1995 who could match McFadden stride for stride, was at practice Thursday.
“ I appreciate his speed and his elusiveness, his versatility,” Kaufman said. “He seems to be an athlete that not only is going to contribute in the running game but also in the passing game. So, there’s great potential with this young man. I’m excited to watch him this year.”
When asked if McFadden reminded him of himself, Kaufman said, “It’s interesting talk, but we’re kind of different kind of backs. We’re really different in a lot of ways. He’s a little bit more physical than I probably was. He’s a bigger guy.”
Kaufman, considerasbly more slim than in playing days, is the senior pastor and founder of “The Well” in Dublin and said he really doesn’t miss playing.
“Actually, because I really love what I’m doing, I hate to say it was just easy, but it was a great transition for me,” Kaufman said. “I’m just enjoying what I’m doing now more than what I can really express . . . I don’t want any big guys jumping on me any more. I like to watch and enjoy that.”
– Arman Shields missed his fourth consecutive practice with a hamstring pull. Fullback Oren O’Neal, who sustained a leg injury Wednesday in the second session, did not practice _ once again giving all the work in team sessions to Griffith. Adimchiobe Echemandu stepped in at fullback in a few seven-on-seven drills.
– The Raiders have Tuesday-Wednesday Thursday organized team activity sessions for the next two weeks. Kiffin said he expects “95 to 97 percent” attendance.

Maybe I will break the trend of the “1st” thing with what I posted at the top. LOL. Anyway, I still don’t know exactly what to make of these camp updates, they’re sort of bitter/sweet, but it serves the fix I was looking for anyway

Anyone wondering why so few NFL cuts after June 1st?
June 5th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Oops I’m back for a minute. The Ram’s just claimed Gradkowski. The Bears and Raiders also put in claims but St Louis got him due to 2007 record. PFT.
Good Night!

Was Kiffin wearing Raiders gear today? The world will end if he wasn’t…
June 5th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Oh well. Let the long hard slog until training camp begins. Also, I wonder what the mysterious pending transaction Kiffin was referring to will end up being?
June 5th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
err…I mean ‘begin’
June 5th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
…the Raiders cutting LaMont?
June 5th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Anyone know the actual date training camp starts? Not a speculation of “First of July” I want an actual date.
June 5th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
how do i register?
June 5th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
The Raiders tried to claim Gradkowski. What do you think that meant?
June 5th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Sucks that Arman Sheilds has been injured i thought he was goin to be a threat. He now has to get his act togther if hes goin to make the cut. Its completely ridiculous the amount of money we are paying out for Kelly, Warren and Sands. Kelly has potential but has not done enough to warrent the money and Sands and Warren are below average. 1 of them should be cut for a veteran like Jackson or Coleman who will stuff the run this season then we can properly address the DT position next year. Its not like Warren or Sands is the long term fix to 1 of the worst run-Ds
BUT
offensively we seem pretty sound for a good while and in the secondary so the potential in the team is insane just need to add a couple of old school run stoppers and experience
June 5th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
That means Tui STILL SUCKS!!!
June 5th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Spawn,
I was waiting for my fix, but I still need more.
Jerry thats all you have for today???
June 5th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Not sure when training camp starts….. maybe first of july
June 5th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I think Kiffin was referring to cutting that QB from Portland State. Maybe he thought they would pick up Gradkowski.
June 5th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Rod Coleman?
June 5th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Sign Grady.
June 5th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
With Kiffin a guy like Walker isn’t a lock to start just because of his name but if he does…
Carter is making a strong push for #2.
The team seems to be giving JLH every chance to beat out Curry and the rookies.
Given Walker and Curry’s injury histories, I could see the team carry 6 WRs. BUT Why not let DMAC line up out there if you need a body?
Flanker - Walker, JLH
Split End - Carter, Curry
Slot (3 WR) - Curry
Shields is working (or not working) his way out of a shot. Who gets #5? Hmmm.
June 5th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
I noticied Kiffin appears to be growing a Goatee, he must be feuding with Al since he is growing facial hair. Him and Al aren’t getting along that is the reason for the Goatee. I can’t believe this, why wont Al just leave him alone and let him shave.
June 5th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

June 5th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
COW,
I think Shields will be on the practice squad…he doesn’t have time to make an impact at this point (in my opinion)
June 5th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Kiffin is smart to give an unknown quantity like Higgins the opportunity to prove himself by getting lots of reps. If back-ups and rookies stand around in practice watching the starters get most of the reps, how do they ever find out what they’ve got and how do the players develop.
On a basketball, team all the players get lots of practice time. In football, you read about the backups doing “mental reps” while the starters get the bulk of the practice time. Can’t they find the time for the back-ups and rookies? Extra sessions for them maybe?
June 5th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

June 5th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
this cracks me up ( During one drill, with cornerback DeAngelo Hall covering Schilens, a pass went out of bounds and to a nearby fence. As Schilens began to trot back to his position group, Hall snapped, “Hey, 82, get the ball!” Schilens, a rookie, listened to the veteran and retrieved the football.) lmao
June 5th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

June 5th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Stork - I don’t know what you’re talking about.
I have never cried about the Celtics here or anywhere else.
Nothing to cry about. They dominated the entire NBA this year. You must have me confused with someone else.

I can’t wait until camp and preseason, then I hope McFadden disproves all the negative analysts who state he won’t be a good back between the tackles, recently all that has been spoken of is his speed to the corner and his ability to leave most LBS covering him in routes. If he displays elusiveness and power running the ball up the middle when the hitting begins I will jump for joy but if he starts getting hit and drops immediately I will be slightly worried.

Jerry Mac…. Great work, you have been on a very good roll as of late. Keep it going.
I’am going to give you a hall pass, just this once, for being 9minutes late with this post. You made that up with the quality of your work. thus far.
But you had myself along w/ 408 and many other NATION brothers getting concerned that you had gone to Denny’s first, instead of getting you post in on time.
All is forgiven.
Be on time
Pay attention

Just another opinion on Michael Bush. There have been comments, even from Kiffen himself, that he has the size, the body movement, the ability to catch passes, but that until he puts on the pads and he attacks those lineman…that’s he’s still an unknown quantity. TRUE to a point, but there are “two-freaking-factors” that we just can’t toss “like a fart in the wind.” (that’s from the Shawshank Redemption, one of my top 10 movies of all times.) Those two factors are:
1. The foundation for running over defenders is in his history in college where he ran over and around and thru defenders. At the start of 2006 he was picked as a top five Heisman Trophy winner. Sure, the NFL is a big step upwards, but nevertheless, most of your “top college players” are able to carry those same abilities forward. Bush should be no exception.
2. In the case of Michael Bush, I believe that his learning curve will stay on an upward trend. Whatever we see from him, just double or triple it. Why, because he hasn’t really played for two “freaking” years. So, he’s just going to get better and better every week. He’ll be punishing those linebackers, he’ll be driving thru and over those linemen, he’ll be a beast. After the “bye-week,” forget it. He’ll be our “cinch-domino” when we need that third and one, third and two or third and three. We saw it in college and we’ll see it here. Al “freaking-Davis” made the steal of the draft when he took Bush @ number 100. It reminds me of when Al drafted Bo Jackson.
Go Raiders…Go Lakers (tonite will be a real tough game. Celtics at home are madmen.)
Anyway, those our my thoughts for what there worth. I’ll take the heat if I’m wrong. I’ve already put my butt on the line by claiming 11-5 minimum, and very possible 12-4 or 13-3.
June 5th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
No worrys Laker fans. Jack made the roadie, has his frrooont row seat.

It would make more sense to have Carter and Walker on the outside because of their speed. I think Curry would be more effective as the slot receiver. No doubt.

RR,
I gree with you, usually great RB at college become good and sometimes great RBs in the NFL. it is the one position that they can come to the Nfl and play well, like Addai, marsh, Peterson,R brown, and others.
June 5th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Plus Bush was suppose to be a 1st round pick, before the leg injury.
June 5th, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Future Glory - Right now the offense is not looking as good as the defense save the defensive secondary…but we know that is actually the strength of the team. However, there are still a lot of interceptions w/o Aso. Right now it would appear the Raiders made good decisions on their defensive signings. I think you should be concerned as I am about the OL and the health of Walker.
As far as I can tell McFadden has been the only back that has explosive runs…and he will likely do that against any defense.

June 5th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Sorry,..ok, Deangelo Hall is without a doubt going to be the leader of the D,…hes real vocal,..all other players seem to look at him as the leader on D,…Sands seems to be really motivated,..not sold on him though,..he stepped it up when Davis was there….but Warren looked great…all did really, Edwards looks awesome…but just a mini,..I will be at one practice in Napa,…anyway, as far as the D goes,…Hall the leader,..and the D will be way better then last year.

A lot of crying going on around here due to a few NBA comments about the Lakers & celtics. Hey, it’s the nature of the beast. They’re always going to be side comments, that’s life. Sometimes, religion (I’ve seen a lot of that). Sometimes, politics (I’ve seen a lot of that). Sometimes, women (Should have said “hot women” I’ve seen that). Sometimes, Food & places to eat (I’ve seen that).ditto, ditto, ditto, etc. etc. etc………….
I haven’t seen a “monitor-policeman” on here restricting us to “JUST FOOTBALL TALK.” So, if you get a little upset over side comments: that’s just life, no biggie, nothing to cry over…just take a chill pill.
Some of the “best, informative & interesting” post here have been by the same people who make a side comment now and then. Overall, we still talk, breath and live RAIDER FOOTBALL. GO RAIDERS.

Raiders top three receivers
Drew Carter, Darren McFadden, and Zack Miller.
June 5th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Ice Assassin, post 236:
Obviously, our 2nd year man, Zack Miller. The more JR learns to read the defensive sets and blitz packages coming at him, the more he’ll be going to Zack. After Zack, it looks like a healthy Drew Carter, who has been developing a great relationship with JR. For the third top receiver, I’ll say Darren MaFadden out of the back field. Honorable mention: Michael Bush.
Extra note: Javon may have the longest average per catch, if he stays healthy and JLH needs to learn how to hold on to the ball. What’s your take Assassin?
June 5th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
KIrk McFadden is a HB with great hands And Miller is our TE. What about the WR postion Carter is one of the FA I was glade we picked up but as far as our other WR spots who do you think will use?
June 5th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Riverside Raiders Fan Drew Carter is the one that has the best chance for a starter and Curry if a key third down receiver but the other spot is open. The money we spent for walker I hope he works out.
June 5th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Strictly wideouts: Carter, Walker & Curry. Of course, Walker and Curry have to get healthy and stay that way.
In regard to our other wideouts, they all need experience and they’ll get just some minimum work. The exception to that could be Johnnie Lee Higgins, if he can start holding on to the ball. Kiffen says he’s faster and stronger, he just needs to focus and “just do it baby.”
Last year, JLH looked like a scared rabbit in the road when a car is coming at 80 miles and hour and the high beems are blinding him.
June 5th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Ice Assassin, I don’t know about the wide receivers. All those rookies…… and Javon Walker is definitely a question mark.
June 5th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Well I see OakGlenn and all his split personalities have chimed in..
June 5th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
KIrk I hope we can find that some of them may make good WR and I hope they can show us that this year. We will have to wait and see if they can.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Ice Assassin:
You’re so right on about Javon Walker. We paid him some big money. If he can come back 100% and if he plays like he did in Green bay, he can be a big contributor. Javon did say that he like the big strong arm of Jamarcus and that his power reminds him of Brett Farve. I like to think positive when it comes to the Raiders (except for Seabass, I have a negative thing for him). So I really believe that Walker wants to come back at 100%, that he wants to contribute BIG TIME and that he wants to show all the “doubters” that he can still do it. For us, it could help us BIG TIME and the “dude” can take it to the top level, when he wants and when he’s healthy.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Riverside Raiders Fan Javon need to step up and be a big time contributer for the money he is being paid. If he can I have a very good feeling for this year. If he can’t we need the younger players to step up.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Ice Assassin:
Ya, if Walker can’t for some reason, then you’re right, someone has to step up. In that case, I say JLH has the best potential, lots of speed and he performed big time in college. I remember him in training camp last year. He was being interviewed by Jeanette and he told her: “I was trained in college that you have to catch the ball, if you don’t it’s your fault and not the QB’s. He said, if the QB throws the ball up in the stands, you as a receiver have to go up in the stands and catch that ball. When I heard him talk that “sh&t,” I said, wow, this guy is going to be great.

Hey All. The WR guy to watch is Todd Watkins. Watkins could turn into to something. Something good.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Riverside Raiders Fan yes he has great potential and he can be great if he can hold on to the ball. If the reports from mini camp are true he has improved over last years stats that wear not all that great but he did not have a lot of chances. We will have to see.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Mistabrain cell has only one cell left.. so leave him alone.. he still thinks he got over on some guy here because he can count 3 extra blitzes in the bowl.. mista brain cell grab your vino and go in a corner and tell urself how great u are.
June 5th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Kiffin better get ready to be shocked at the abilities of MB. I said too many times that we really didn’t need DMC because of Bush and now he’s going to see why along with everyone else. This kid is not a short yardage bruiser like Crockett. He is a dynamic talent capable of carrying this offense. His versatility is off the charts, a rare size speed guy who can flat out do it all. When he split him out wide it confirmed a lot of why I said what I said before the draft. He can do for us what Marcus Allen did and some. Marcus was never used in ways that he was capable of even though he caught a lot of passes he was more versatile than Marshall Faulk because of his ability to block and the same is true with Bush. The difference is Bush has a coach willing to use him in ways Flores and Shell nev er used Marcus.
He along with Russell will be the toughest players in the league to contain. Russell’s talents will make Bush even more dangerous. Kiffin has no idea what he has based on what he continues to say about Bush. Bush is much more versatile than Lyndale White. While their styles are obviously very different Michael Bush can be used almost like he used Reggie Bush. No, he’s not nearly as quick and explosive as Reggie but his skillset is very similar.
Kiffin will learn early on that he can do some of the same things with Michael that he did with Reggie. MB will do them differently but almost as effectively. DMC’s style i more similar to Reggie w/o the moves.
MB is a very rare animal and Kiffin will see in camp when he flattens a tackler on one play and on the next catches a pass and devastates the defense with his openfield running.
DMC is a luxury and will make some awesome open field runs as well as catching passes and wreaking havoc in his own way. But my point is we already had that ability just in a bigger more dominating package.
Don’t forget nor sell Fargas short he is now in a system that compliments his talent and he’s finally comfortable. His desire and fire will be very evident this season and most will be very surprised at the effectiveness.
I’m saying all this to say that along with the awesomw talent of Russell this could be the scariest offense to face and prepare for in the entire league by midseason. 3 HB’s with very different styles capable of dominating. And that doesn’t even include the passing game.
AFC west look the hell out, the RAIDERS are coming and bringing the most dynamic offense the league has seen in years.

Oakglenn Watkins has a good chance but what has he shown in mini camp and can he hold onto the ball and dose he have the speed that he is said to have?
