Source: Raiders to sign Keller today
By Sports
Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 at 9:46 am in Oakland Raiders.
UPDATE: Steve Corkran reports that Keller’s signing is official. The Raiders waived QB Erik Meyer to make room for him.
Looks like the Raiders’ backup quarterback situation is going to get a bit more muddled, with word coming from a source close to Sam Keller that the ex-San Ramon Valley High, Arizona State and Nebraska signal-caller will sign with Oakland today.
Keller worked out with the Raiders at a post-draft mini-camp, but left without signing a contract. The Raiders later re-signed Marques Tuiasosopo, who joined Andrew Walter as the main competitors to back up JaMarcus Russell.
Keller would join Erik Meyer and Jeff Otis, giving the Raiders six quarterbacks heading into training camp in July. Our reporters thought Keller was actually more impressive than both Otis and Meyer in May.

Good morning Raider fans…
Note, for the George Carlin fans, HBO will be running some of the specials he did for them starting tonight at 8 pm and Thursday night at 8 pm as well. For you youngsters or for those that have never seen George Carlin, you might want to check him out if you have HBO.
No comment on Kelly, stick with Walter and Tui.

June 25th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Signing Keller would be a smart move. He clearly has talent and potential. Andrew Walter doesn’t fit the system, he just doesn’t have the mobility and should be traded. The big issue is whether Tui has enough talent/presence to hold down the back-up job. If he does, then a trio of JR, Tui and Keller looks balanced and compatible. If not, then Dilfer is worth a look as the experienced back-up.
Keller gives us the raw materials to train JR’s long-term back-up.

Sam Keller QB 6’4 241 Nebraska 4.91
By: Robert Davis
Keller spent his first three seasons of college at Arizona St. He took over the starting job as a junior in 2005, and had an amazing start to the season. In the first seven games, he threw for 2,165 yards and 20 TD’s to just nine interceptions until he went down with a hand injury. A QB battle in which Rudy Carpenter was named the starter caused Keller to transfer to Nebraska, where he sat out the 2006 season. His only season with the Huskers was cut short with a left shoulder injury but he still managed to throw for 2,422 yards, while completing over 63% of his passes for 14 touchdowns and ten interceptions.
Keller has all the skills to develop into a quality pocket passer. He has a very good arm, capable of making every throw on the field. He is not afraid to unleash the ball all over the field, and has the confidence in his ability to make big plays. Keller has good size and the frame to be able to take hits in the pocket and continue to get up. He still has some development and upside left in his game.
Inconsistency has been the big issue with Keller. He has made some questionable decisions at times, and may believe in his arm too much. He will try and force the ball into coverage to make a play instead of seeing the field and making the smart decision. He also has less that two seasons of starting experience at the college level, so he still needs more work.
Sam Keller is a quarterback that needs more time, but has the skills to develop. He needs more experience overall, especially in the aspect of reading a defense. If a team can have some patience and be willing to develop his skills, he is a player that could develop into a legitimate NFL quarterback.

I just hope Nnamdi Asomugha doesn’t ask the Raiders not to franchise him next year before he signs the offer sheet.
June 25th, 2008 at 10:39 am
I hope Nnamdi doesnt do that we need him on this team i hope he doesnt hes my favorite defensive player and a home grown talent.
June 25th, 2008 at 10:42 am
He deserves that big contract without a doubt i hope Al will give it to him hes got phenomenal skills and is a stand up guy good character and never has problems off the field he would set a great example for the others on the team for years to come. I say pay da man AL whats the hold up?????
June 25th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Nnamdi is doing what all other franchise players do and that is sit out of practices until they are mandatory. Because of the obvious reason, injury and no guarantee in a franchise on year contract.
wearing the franchise tag is not a popular thing in the NFL because if you get hurt your screwed. So why show up for voluntary practice and risk injury.
Don’t worry by mini camp he will be there and ready to go.
June 25th, 2008 at 10:55 am
I hate the University of Nebraska and all of its shiitty players.
June 25th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Now that Shane Olivea has been banned for four games for failing a drug test, any team could get him for the minimum. Okay, we won’t be available until Week 5 and he wasn’t hugely impressive for the Bolts in 2007. BUT. The Shane Olivea of 2004 to 2006 was one of the best OTs in the league and if we could get his head straight and his motivation sorted, I think he would be a bargain.
We desperately need some quality depth at OT. Harris is a gamble. Green is a journeyman. McQuistan isn’t trusted and Henderson isn’t (yet) tough enough.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:01 am
I have a report on Sam Keller his strengths are makes big plays with arm and legs shows the athleticism to avoid sacks when sensing pressure.Has the body control to reset and throw accurately when scarmbling.Tends to set up and throws quickly.when striding into passes,he makes NFL throws with velocity and accurately.weaknesses struggles to consistently to make good decisions and accurate throws in tight situations.he threw bad ints in important college games.has trouble with footwork.sometimes gets flat footed and relies on his arm strngth to delver the ball loseing accurately allowing defenders more time to break on the ball.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Keller is a project. We need a proven back-up, not Tui & sure as hell not Walter.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:08 am
I hope so July 25 we need Nnamdi signed and in camp preferably to a big 5-6 year deal.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Scottish,
He was banned for illicit drugs and SD said he seemed to have “lost his motivation.”
Looks like the dude is finished, why risk exposing our young ones to more trouble? I know we need more depth, but this guy is not the answer…unless we hire Dr. Phil and check him in to the Betty Ford clinic.
At this point in the offseason it is going to be pretty difficult to upgrade the o-line. Hopefully the o-line and d-line are priorities in the next offseason.
Pray that Cable can work more miracles.

June 25th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Dakota,
You’re probably right. I am just really concerned about our lack of alternatives at LT and the search for a credible starter at RT.
I thought McQuistan did a reasonable job at RT for the last five games of the 2007 season. He looked like a possible long-term solution, but he isn’t even getting any RT reps.
We might not yet be desperate enough to take a risk on Olivea, but we aren’t far away.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Hello!!! I found myself,WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 25th, 2008 at 11:29 am
If Keller has shown retention of the playbook since the Spring, it would appear he is already battling Andrew Walter for the #3 spot. Tui was groomed under Gruden, and Kiff appears to be using a similar offensive philosophy as Gruden.
Tui is already the #2, without it being said, although Walter has more potential to be trained-up further. Ironic that Walter still has trade value, where Tui would have none if he were offered up.
At the risk of putting too much faith in the young defensive linemen who appear to be impressing everyone in OTA’s and such — it’s time to package Walter in trade to a team that can better use his talents, in exchange for another WR or offensive lineman. AW could start for any number of teams in this league, and those teams’ GM’s know it. Couldn’t have an easier contract to trade, either.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:31 am
Wow. That was am insightful article. I’ll admit, I slammed Javon pretty hard. But, it is a pretty sad situation. Hopefully, he’ll seek some sort of help. For his sake and ours.

Kudos to AD for bringing in Keller. We need competition at reserve QB so that a trustworthy #2 emerges and we can trade away Walter - our only player with trade value who we can afford to dump.
I would love Keller to have a great camp, trade Walter (and the big dummy #34?) for some depth at OT, WR or SAM LB, and let Tui finish his otherwise unremarkable NFL career as a loyal Raider third-stringer. #3 QB is the one position where an AD scholarship type player is OK.
I also wouldn’t mind if Walter went somewhere in the NFC and lived up to his talent. He had a relatively good attitude while getting pummelled 2 years ago, and deserves better than he’ll get in Alameda.
Food for thought: Can you imagine how Gannon would have reacted if he were the starter under Walsh/Shell? NUCLEAR. In that scenario, I actually think Gannon would have gotten Shell fired mid-season.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Jordan for Shockey is an absolute pipe dream. Jordan essentially has no trade value because of his inflated contract. The Raiders will just have to cut him loose. Everybody knows it. Plus, while I would definitely like to see Shockey in Silver & Black, I doubt the Raiders would want to do that to Z. Miller after the promise he showed as a rookie.
Shockey is an OK blocker, not great but servicable, but he is a great playmaker who the Giants have under-utilized for years. He’d definitely be a great personality fit in Oakland. Fiery, tough and a bit of a headcase. I remember watching this Giants-Eagles playoff game at a bar two years ago, and the place just went berserk on this play by Shockey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx02CbpPcGY
———
Walter doesn’t seem to fit. He never had a great opportunity, but I don’t like QBs with zero mobility. You could point to the game’s top 2 QBs and say that mobility doesn’t matter. But Brady and Manning both are excellent at avoiding the first wave of pass-rushers and then hitting an open receiver — usually for a big gain.
Walter is more in the mold of Kerry Collins and Drew Bledsoe. Those guys both had decent careers behind a pair of big arms, but they’re absolute statues and turnover machines. That’s why their careers are finishing up as backups. Bledsoe, Collins and Walter all still have elite arms, but the immobility of all three makes them prone to an excessive number of turnovers and sacks.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Scottish — Almost without exception, every one of the “problem child” players let loose in the past year, has done something to further their suspensions, or otherwise add to their bad reputations.
How many times on this board have we seen guys crying for a player (Henry, Thurman, et al) who ends up being at least as bad (or stupid) as his rep? Every time that happens to a player who occupies a coveted roster-spot, it moves the team back, not forward.
We want football questions and answers, not questions of character. Look at the hype surrounding Javon Walker — a guy who appears to have done nothing other than exersize his right to be stupid at times.
Imagine what it would’ve been like if this happened on a night off a few months from now. Assuming Javon is worth the money (even half the money) of his contract, this event would’ve been devastating to a team that needs every player to be responsible for his actions — on and off the field.
Characters, yes. But, no more players of questionable character.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Shockey is a white Randy Moss. He’ll show up when winning but become a distracting headcase on a losing team. We just dumped a few players with similar mental shortcomings (Porter, Fabe, Brayton) and we’re about to jettison our last example: Lamont “I may be outta shape, but at least I don’t know the playbook” Jordan.
June 25th, 2008 at 11:57 am
OK, maybe not our last example. MeAngelo Hall and Walker certainly need to prove they are grown men when winning AND losing.

Our QB situation is baaaaaad if J.R. goes down. Tui is worse than McCown who would have been a good back-up/mentor/role model for JaMarcus. He’s the type of guy that could come in for a couple games and run the offense o.k. Tui is terrible and Walter doesn’t fit the scheme. Keller is merely camp fodder - I’m sure he’ll be better than Otis and Meyer, but he’s in the same mold of Walter, tall and slow, except not as good. We need a vet than has won some games in this league - Leftwich is still out there and I thought he was better than Culpepper, who is also still out there. Culpepper obviously doesn’t want to be a mentor and still considers himself a starter, so his attitude can go someplace else. Leftwich has won some games without Randy Moss and would probably appreciate the opportunity - he’s not mobile, but he could hand the ball off and make some plays off play action, something that Tui can’t do because he can’t see the field. Losing McCown and his one year of experience in the system hurt us because we could have had an open competition for the other QB spot with Walter - we should have gone after Andre Woodson or Dennis Dixon as developmental players - Right now we’ve got 6 QB’s with something like 10 games of NFL experience between them. We have to go after somebody that has done it at this level.

Shockey is an id1ot… no brain, just talk… why on earth would we want a cancer like that on our roster??? he’s been out for a year, and Miller is better!
June 25th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
JR won’t go down because we will be running the ball 30-40 times per game. Kiffin is going to do what Gruden did not, which is listen to Davis and throw deep once in a while.
June 25th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
LMN - You could show up to our country in your uniform because our uniforms are sitting in another country helping someone else.
June 25th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Gruden had a QB with poor downfield arm strength and WRs who couldn’t run past anybody. I don’t blame him for not going downfield. I blame Gruden for being too conservative, especially when we had the heady vets necessary to execute risky gameplan (which Trestman DID do after we traded Chucky).
June 25th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
LMN…#36 Very good point there, Miller should be an ALL-PRO for many years.
Who you got in the match. Germany or Turkey?
June 25th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Keller is a nice addition of talent. I thought he was going to stick and he got cut so I’m happy to see him back. Hes has to be better than Meyer and Otis. The thing that concerns me about Tui is that Gruden drafted him but Gruden didn’t pick him up when he was a free agent and Gruden has no problem picking up 12 QB’s at one time. Why would the man that supposedly drafted him to be the successor to Gannon, not pick him up and give him a tryout? I honestly don’t see Keller being better than Walter.
Walter was a 3 year starter who wasn’t injury prone until he hurt his shoulder his senior year. He got beat down in the Shell/Walsh era and continued to get up again and again. Hes tough and more polished than Keller.

June 25th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
I agree with the poster who wants Olivea - having a bonified starter at ROT would be key for us - it will allow us to send Miller out into pass patterns more often and help out whoever starts at LT with the FB or RB. The core of our line should be o.k. with Gallery, Wade (or whoever beats him out, by the way, bring in LeCharles Bentley please), and Carlisle. None of our OT’s are upper eschelon players so JR won’t know where the pressure is coming from because he’ll have to consistely focus on both edges. All we need is one stud at either one of the OT positions and we won’t have to compromise our scheme too much by keeping in extra blockers. Adding McFadden will definetly help by keeping the D honest with draws, screens, motion to the slot, etc. but in those 2 minute situations or if we get behind and are forced into obvious passing situations, we’re going to be hurting, but not as bad as last year since we added some speed at WR and JR has the arm to get the ball down the field.
I feel with the new talent, another year in the system, and our weak schedule, and how close we were to winning 5 more games last year we should win 10-12 games this year on paper, but we’re not going to go far in the playoffs (if things work out) having to compensate for two sub-par OT’s that will constrict our scheme in the pass game. Obviously the goal is the super bowl, so needs at OT and Dline still need to be addressed over the next couple of years before we’re legit contenders.

Ever heard Shockey speak? He doesn’t respect anybody, and he has the same surly attitude even when in a good mood. Shockey’s just another spoiled, slightly over-rated ego case — with a limited vocabulary filled with “me’s” and “I’s.” Why do we want to keep adding “me-first” guys to this roster? Egos are fine, but team-players are what this team needs — no matter how good a guy is.
June 25th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Lorenzen is worth a look. He’s got a big arm and might actually be better than Tui, Walter and Keller. He’s not great but he should definitely land another job somewhere in the league.
Leftwich was awesome in college and showed some nice flashes as a pro. If he wasn’t so injury prone he’d be starting somewhere in 2008. I’d rather have him than Culpepper or any other free agent QB, if the price is right.
Leftwich is as good or better than half the starting QBs in the league, IMO.

FYI
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has prohibited the use of the word “ketchup” on product labels unless the product conforms to a set of strict guidelines. Despite the more general origins of the word, all products marketed as ketchup in the United States must be thickened only with tomato solids, and the viscosity of the sauce must be within a very narrow range. The nutrient content of the sauce is also tightly regulated.
Ketchup has been shown to provide significant health benefits but many argue that these benefits are counterbalanced by the food’s salt and sugar content. Ketchup has been found to be a beneficial source of lycopene, an antioxidant which may help prevent some forms of cancer. This is particularly true of the organic brands of ketchup. In fact, organic brands were found to contain three times as much lycopene as non-organic brands

I get your point, the similarities are general, the ball was round, but made of stone. I was just re-iterating your point that soccer is the worlds most popular sport and similar versions of the sport have been played for hundreds of years.
Football is still so much more entertaining than soccer in my opinion. Personally in order to enjoy soccer I must have a vested interest, unlike basketball or football where I can still enjoy watching watching the game even if my favorite teams aren’t involved.

yup =)true, I understand why…
but remember soccer as it is played in the US is mostly boring to us as well , it has nothing to do with real soccer, and you need to follow it for at least 2 years to understand the formations, tactics and the reasons behind the changes before and during a game… and by follow it. I mean the Champions league, the Uefa cup, and the national leagues plus the national teams games…

Plus I’am not sure the ol’ lady, would go for having to park her car outside the garage again, just made room for it not to long ago.
Damn nice looking table though, that would get me back into the game, I hung my sticks up a few years back..

the World cup has very little to do with real soccer too…
its the clubs, who let you understand how the game works. The National teams play after a philosophy… the clubs are in for the money! and they have multiple nationalities on their roster…
World Cup is dead last in priority! Euro Cup, is way harder than the World cup, I know it doesn’t seem logic, but is true…
remember if the US team tried to qualify to the Euro Cup, even small nations with 1 million inhabitants would smash your… By that I mean, the quality of the world cup is much lower than the Euro cup…
but the real deal are Champions league and Uefa Cup.. thats where it happens… national teams are a holiday compared to the clubs =)

You can also get Raider themed balls with a rival team as the other balls. For me solids would be the Raiders and stripes would be the Chiefs. I would probably puke if I saw Bronco balls on my pool table!
As far as being able to actually own the table and get the spousal clearance like you mentioned, it would take a little work. I can be very persuasive.

Actually, I don’t have to imagaine — I’m married to a Brazilian and was in Brazil when they won their last one in 2002. It’s a HUGE deal. After reading that article on ESPN.com about Javon today I now realize that there are some bigger issues at work here. Serious emotional issues. I don’t know about any of you guys, but I have never had anyone die in my arms, let alone a good friend.
I just hope he can find peace in his life, because if he doesn’t it WILL manifest itself on the field either by poor play or by just plain losing his desire to succeed.
Javon Walker needs to see a grief counselor and stop running from his pain. Learn from it, use it as strength and move on. He is probably still stuck on January 1, 2007.

Great point, you may be right about addiction problems. Serious grief can only compound those kind of problems. Sometimes serious grief can even cause addiction. Anything to hide from feelings that are too hard to face.
Then again Javon could just be a compulsive gambler/champagne sprayer that does blow like his name is Tony Montana. But I have a feeling it runs deeper than that.
Either way he needs to get his S together soon. I just hope football is his only sanctuary and he pours everything he has into it. I won’t hold my breath though.

you are absolutely right if you only think about merits (merits and knowledge isn’t comparable) … but the italian coach Lippi who won the World Cup with italy and who will become caoch again after Donadoni…said it as well, so did Klinsmann…. they won everything…
another argument that the european leagues are harder than the world cup…The entire brazil team all plays for European teams…
If you took Man U (winners of Chp League) and played them against brazil, Brazil would lose…
In spain you first root for your local team, then for the biggest team in spain (usually barca/Real) and lastly their national team… uhh and btw, its just as huge in spain as in Brazil… so it paint the picture pretty well…

well yeah!! have in mind we are only about 5.5m here! and most people here was against it, then its a lot, go do the percentage…
640 / 5,500,000*100 = 0.011%
33,000 / 300,000,000 = 0.011&
Funny isn’t it =)
what you need to have in mind, is how many nations do you have as allies ?? not that many, this is more a game of numbers of nations, than a game of soldiers!

Dogg,
If I lived in Denmark maybe I would just have to call in the government to fix my proken prinkler…gladly worth 60% of my income!
June 25th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Dakota,
You may be right about the US’s contributions in WWII, not to mention WWI as well, but other than that we have offered very little in contributing to rest of the world’s advancement during our nation’s brief existence. Don’t be suprised by the way others look upon us.
Sincerely,
Electricity, the telephone, airplanes, the personal computer, and the internet
June 25th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
wtf??? broken sprinkler!!!!!
June 25th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Dakota -
I guess I was wrong about the sprinkler system then. That’s good news anyway.
On another note I hear that the Beard may be headed to Detroit.

June 25th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Dogg,
I heard that…Wallace and Chauncey for the Beard???
Do you like that deal?
June 25th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Dakota -
Not really, mostly because of the age difference. The Beard is much younger. I would rather have Marcus Camby than Rasheed Wallace, although Rasheed plays his heart out when he wants to. The Warriors need a big man desperately.
Monte Ellis is the future so they will be all right without BD, but if the W’s are going to deal The Beard they need to get a big man in return somehow.
June 25th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Sorry, Dakota. The Russians won the war in Europe. 75% of all German casualties were inflicted by the Russians.
June 25th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Wewease Bwian!
June 25th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Hate that deal. Mr. Bigshot hasn’t hit a big shot in years, and Wallace will pout and drive all the fans crazy. Gotta keep the Beard!!!
June 25th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
It’s just that America has the highest Murder rate in the World outside of South Africa and Zimbabwe,
Has more people in prison than ANY nation on earth
Has the highest Divorce rate on earth.
And has to import it’s scientists and engineers.
Infracture is crumbling.
A very violent place.

Keller signing now official. Our beat writer, Steve Corkran, just got it confirmed. Erik Meyer was waived to make room for Keller, which leaves 5 QBs on the roster: Russell, Tuiasosopo, Walter, Keller, Otis.

Thanks Jon. You are on it.
Keep up the good work.
June 25th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Jesus I cant believe I spent that much time reading all that. Blogging should be like drinking When drinkning= No Religion No Politics and no comments about little sisters. (dirty bastards)
June 25th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Who the heck is Keller?…hopefully this means Marc Wilson Jr will be let go,…Walter sucks.
June 25th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Sorry Kirk, looks like you need a history lesson:
Without the lend-lease agreement (look it up) between the US and USSR, and the US lead bombing of Germany destroying its infrastructure and crippling its ability to wage war, and the subsequent invasion of France, most of Europe would be speaking German right now.
The USSR did kick some @zz, and faught valliantly to save Moscow and Stalingrad, but without out our help with equipment supplies they would only have been able to eject Germany from thier own boarders…maybe.
June 25th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
I think we should go after S-Jimmy Williams. think about, G.Wilson with J.Williams side by side and M.Huff as back up. Nice Right. that is if J.Williams can play like the star that he is suposed too. if he does than we just might be able to trade M.Huff for a O.Tackle or a S.S. linebacker or even a decent WR
June 25th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
KoolKell,…nobody gives a crap about your views on world issues. Youre a moron, period.
June 25th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

June 25th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I have lost the ability to spell, so I am out for the day.
Maybe tomorrow we can debate the use of the atomic bomb on Japan???
June 25th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Dakota and KoolKell, stop talking politics. This is a football blog, not some whiney political bitch fest. Take it to some high brow political blog. Nobody wants to hear your guys’ exchange of boring ideas and historical references in here. Talk Raiders.

maybe the rest of the world was way 2 smart 2 be drug into the biggest political blunder ever perpatrated on the free world.a gutless war started by a fortunate son so he could finish his daddys personal vendetta.all the shattered lives, divorces, fatherless kids, amputees warped minds, promised medical care never delivered and 4 what?A closed door energy policy so bush oil and cheany kbr. They might have sold thier intrest but dont you dare think 4 a minute when these piece of shiot slime balls get out of office they dont have jobs waiting. This has been going on since bush 1 was head of cia in the 1950s.WE may have come 2 europes rescue but that was 1945.They have showed there appreciation 4 63 years.anyone who sided with bush over this LIE can burn in middle-east oil as far as Im concerned 4 all eternity.I personally applaud the Netherlands 4 having enough sence 4 not having the so called bush patriotisim.GO DENMARK

Well, I’m leaving now, goodbye.
Just wanted to get everyone to stop talking politics, because real men don’t talk politics. Real men just keep filling the buckets. Pay not attention to what the big man is doing. Earn your keep. And have faith in your
