Winning with a `rookie’ QB depends on run game
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, July 6th, 2008 at 11:52 am in Oakland Raiders.
Fourth in a series of concerns regarding the makeup of the 2008 Raiders with the reporting date approaching on July 24 at the Napa Marriott:
JaMarcus Russell isn’t a rookie quarterback in the way that Dan Marino and Ben Roethlisberger were rookies.
Two of the most notable success stories for rookies at the NFL’s most important position reported on time, with Marino taking over for David Woodley after five weeks in 1983 and being elevated to the No. 1 spot for the final 14 games in 2004.
Marino’s Dolphins went 12-4 and bowed out in the first round of the playoffs. The Steelers, under Roethlisberger, went 15-1 and lost in the AFC championship game to New England.
Any chance the Raiders have of getting to .500 and beyond with Russell in 2008 will be to follow the same blueprint the Dolphins and Steelers did with their true rookies. Marino and Roethlisberger were protected from youthful mistakes by cutting down their passing oppportunities because of stubborn running games.
The 1983 Dolphins ran the ball on 56.2 of their snaps (568 rushes, 442 passes), while the 2004 Steelers ran on a whopping 63.3 percent of their plays (618 rushes and 358 passes).
The Raiders, as currently constituted, appear to have a good chance at keeping Russell’s chances for mistakes down through the run. Marino and Roethlisberger also had solid defenses in place, which kept the play-calling sure and safe _ an area of concern for the Raiders.
In 2007, the Raiders ran with a greater frequency then they did in 2000, the year they led the league in rushing and won their first of three division titles. Putting three backs over 100 yards in a game and led by Justin Fargas, the Raiders ran 508 times and pases 451, a 52.9 percent rate which exceeded the 52.3 percent of 200 (520 rushes, 475 passes).
It was a remarkable show of persistence by Kiffin for two reasons. First, the Raiders were often behind making it easier to abandon the run. Second, the 2000 Raiders had their amount of running plays inflated because of scrambles by Rich Gannon which were called as pass plays in the huddle.
Oakland should be even better equipped to run the ball in 2007, having added Darren McFadden to the mix and with the emergence of Michael Bush to join Fargas. Oakland also replaced Barry Sims with Kwame Harris at left tackle, and while there are legitimate questions regarding Harris’ pass blocking skills, he was a big factor in Frank Gore’s big year with his run blocking in 2006.
As encouraging as that is, it remains to be seen whether Rob Ryan can concoct a truly stout defense which will enable the Raiders to games, and Russell, under control. There is also the issue of pass blocking should Oakland fall behind and be forced to throw. A big pass rush, particularly against “rookies,” results in sacks and forced throws for interceptions.
Kiffin made it clear Russell’s success, or the success of any young quarterback, has to do with his supporting cast. As much as I like what I’ve seen from Russell during minicamps and OTAs, and Oakland’s ability to run the ball, the Raiders’ ability to defend and pass block will determine whether he can return the franchise to respectability.

It can be done. Ben did it for pit
July 6th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Is their any news of us doing anything else like signing some cut F/A’s ?
July 6th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Damn Jerry thanks.
Jerry, could you please ask Mike Taylor how a 80 yr old man could be the teams primary personnel guy?
July 6th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Kool, i agree with your comment on dorsey or DMAC. Would not like to face him twice a year for the next 6 years.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Jerry,
Do you think Al’s offseason spending this year, indicates it’s his last hurrah?
July 6th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Does anyone including you Jerry have any new news on walkers condition?
July 6th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
I wonder if Gallery will be put at the LT position on certain plays. I’m very concerned with the left side of our line, especially with a “rookie” QB. I can easily see Kwame and Gallery taking each other out of plays when one of them gets blown up.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Left side scares the bejings out of me….
We may be running 70% of the time.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
I am a everyday reader and need some help/advice from those of you who attend games!!! I am going to make my 2nd trip into the Oakland to watch the Monday night opener and need some advice on tickets. Is row 15 *section 141* too close to be able to see a good view of the game. The other choice I am looking at is row 25 *section 144*. I know this doesn’t relate the blog but hopefully the raider nation can help me out here. Both pair of seats are just about the same price and the closer ones are more towards the 50yd line and isle seats. But not sure if row 15 is too close. Thanks!
July 6th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
18 days till training camp. Jerry, do you know if the swelling has gone down on Walkers face yet?
July 6th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Who cares if his face is swollen, it should be swollen and painfull maybe he will learn a life long lesson.
FYI…he catches footballs with his hands not his face.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
I have a feeling the swelling has gone down tremendously on Walker’s ego!! I know it’s cliche but perhaps this is exactly what it was going to take to get him to reflect and recommit himself to being a great player and hopefully a better person. The laughs we’ll have if he lights it up in week 1!!
July 6th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Jerry,
Russell isn’t a rookie by any standards this is his second year in the NFL.
Ryan can concoct a stout defense right around never…
July 6th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Nick-
Row 15 in not too close. Both choices are awesome seats.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Re Walker, sometimes the best sense is bought sense. He paid a pretty penny for his.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
**Stronger**
But what makes Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin happy is that Roll’s message is getting through – loud and clear – to players before they take the field.
Roll replaced Jeff Fish, who left to become the director of athletic performance for the Atlanta Falcons. Roll comes to the Raiders from the St. Louis Rams.
Besides having the ability to yell instructions loud enough for nearly 80 men on a football field to hear, Roll has several Raiders looking different and feeling stronger.
Kiffin noted the physical improvement of several players this offseason. More Raiders are setting personal bests in the weight room and credit Roll with the progress.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Nick I sit in 141 come by for a beer. Great Seats!
July 6th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Nick,
Go to raiders.com and check out the Virtual seating chart. It gives you a pretty good look at the view you’ll have from either seats.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Seabass misses FG, what a huge surprise! Al bring in a kicker to compete with Jano, oh wait you drafted him #1 nevermind!
“When the Raiders met for their mandatory minicamp, Lane Kiffin offered his team a chance to bypass tedious individual drills provided Sebastian Janikowski made a 36-yard field goal.
If Jano misfired, drills would begin.
As it happened, Janikowski missed, and Kiffin watched closely. What he said he saw was a team that simply trotted off to work on their drills and get through the day. No moaning, no groaning, no griping”
July 6th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
im good with 60%- 70% running plays.. screen passes and play action are going to be our bread and butter this year. The D is still suspect hopefully Kelly earns his money…
July 6th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Carter’s college career was marred by several injuries to his knees and ankles. He produced 41 catches for 632 yards and one touchdown during his college career
July 6th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Carolina Panthers
He spent his rookie season in 2004 on injured reserve after tearing the ACL in his knee during June coaching sessions. He has also missed additional time throughout his career with injuries to his ankle. He made the team roster midway through the 2005 NFL season after the team released Rod Gardner, and made an impact upon his first catch, taking it 44 yards to set up a Panthers score. During his tenure with the Panthers he was second on the team’s wide receiver depth chart, behind Steve Smith. In the 2007 NFL Season Carter caught 38 receptions for 517 yards and 4 touchdowns.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
My boy is not a rookie and I have a funny feeling he will be called upon to QB this team this season.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
There should be a Dave Chappell skit staring Javon Walker…When Keeping it Real in Las Vegas goes wrong.
It all started out well spraying people with champagne then he had to keep it real and start a fight with an Arab and they unleashed a Jihad on him…
July 6th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
I thought he was a posession guy.
Carter also has the drive needed to get to the next level. The Ohio State track star ran a 4.2-second 40-yard dash for NFL scouts on campus last spring.
July 6th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
KK basically that compares to Jerry Porters 44 receptions, 705 yards, 6 scores in 2007.
July 6th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Oh man 666,
That’s funny!!
July 6th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
thanks guys, I think I am going to go with the section 141 row 15 seats. Checked the virtual viewer out, but hard to tell if players/sideline activity would be in the way of the view of the game. Hopefully not, but they sound like perfect seats just about!
silvernblack666, see ya there, I will be there extremely early to take everything in!
July 6th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Being a die hard raider fan from ohio, I also happen to be a die hard Buckeye fan. (jack tatum baby!) Drew Carter simply never panned out at OSU. He was a track start learning how to be a football player. I trully believe he is finally blooming into a football player with track speed! I would not be suprised that he is the WR that turns into our #1 guy if Walker can’t do it.
July 6th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Nick just about every seat in the house is a good seat well I havent been atop MtDavis but no worries enjoy the game
July 6th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Al Davis spent a boatload of money on free agents who either have character issues or are coming off serious injuries; to be led by a rookie quarterback and a second year coach he wanted to fire. The Raiders will be lucky to win eight games; which of course will be a banner year when compared to recent seasons.
July 6th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
What It Doo Nation
July 6th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
just bought them, came out to $175 a tic, but if I am going to make the trip have to do it right.
Thanks 408 raider. I am sure I would have a great time no matter what, but I have been to games before and seats too close sucked because you couldn’t see over the sideline activity (players, benches, etc). But row 15 should be high enough that all that is cleared!
July 6th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Nick you’re gonna have a great time believe me. 141 row 15 is like they’re playing in you’re back yard. You’ll have a blast.

I do think that the running game will be better with the added dimension that McFadden will bring.

I must say Jerry, that was some good analytical work - comparative analysis that stuck to the facts and more importantly ..is relevant (or applicable).
You pointed it out as a concern and that it is; but on the flip side its very encouraging. Why? Because this currently constituted offense is geared for a high octane ground attack, mixed with very frequent high completion percentage RB dump-offs, an early but maturing mid-range threat and the occasional deep BOMB.
As you have pointed out, Harris is more of a run blocker than a pass blocker insofar as has been proven. And he was a big time contributor to Gore’s TKO performance in ‘06. I feel very confident in saying that’s going to be his overwhelming duty in the ‘08 campaign - i.e. blocking via the ground game. (It diminishes to a degree the concerns we have regarding his pass protection as he’ll be mostly run blocking).
This offense is a near perfect setup for JRs “rookie” debut. - Hand the ball off and hand it off often. Build confidence via short passes to RB (who are supreme threats to go the distance ..specifically DMC & MB). And pump his chest some more as he displays his arm with high precision deep BOMBs on occasion once the defenses start inching closer.
July 6th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
jmac, really appreciate the updates on sunday! you’re the best
July 6th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Honestly you guys the running game last year was good. Not great, but good. Kwame is going to be an upgrade to that running game. So are Mike Bush and Dmac. The short passing game is just an extension of the running game. End rushers are not going to be able to just pin their ears back and come. Unless the Raiders are down 30-3 at the half, which I don’t think is going to happen that often.
July 6th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
thanks oakglenn, can’t wait to see the silver and black that close! Can’t wait to see run-dmc get his first regular season touches against the hated donkeys!
July 6th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
there is a much better team in this raider roster this year than last years ,plus i am same next season we draft a lineman or wr but i bet we go over 500
July 6th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Just Being in the same offensive and run blocking systems for a 2nd year will be a huge benefit. If you remember this team later in the year was nite and day better than earlier in the season.
July 6th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
well we will see what happens when the season starts
July 6th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Dont forget about Russell’s ability to run. The big man can move pretty good for someone his size. That should keep teams honest on the pass plays.
Also whats the deal wit Grady Jackson. I thought he played great last year with Jax. Im not clear why is he out of a job. What am I missing??
July 6th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Something smells terrible in here.
July 6th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
From Day 1 JR is a better QB than McCown or Culpepper. McCown never had the arm to make teams pay or even keep the D honest. DC was just a wreck - he looked like he had no confidence and he just didn’t get much done. He fumbled, took too long to get the ball out, and just didn’t run the offense very well.
With the run oriented offense we have, west coast offense based passing system, designed roll outs, etc., there is no reason not to expect JR to be sucessful. First, we’ll be able to cut the field in half for him on at least 25% of his pass plays with the roll outs giving him only easy primary and secondary reads out in space at the edges of the zone or man defense he is facing (e.g. his first pass to porter). DC could never do that effectively and McCown wasn’t very accurate on the move (his weak arm also forced shorter pass patterns so the D wasn’t stretched out enough thus giving him much smaller windows to throw through, which compounded the problem with his weak arm).
Another factor that must be considered is the fact that JR has an Elway/Farve type arm. He will be able to throw deep and back acorss the field on these roll outs, and if you recall, that’s where Elway and Farve made many of thier big plays.
I’m sure Kiffin’s play calling in the pass game will consist of at least 50% single or double reads play action and designed roll outs and we know another 25% are going to be dumps, screens, and hitches. Throw in some trick plays and formations with McFadden and we should only see about 20% of the pass plays being straight drop back, and 1/2 of those are going to be west coast slants, curls, outs. The other 10% are going to be 5 step and greater drops, so 90% of the pass plays are going to be as simple or simpler than what JR had in college. He has shown great devotion over the offseason and had a year to learn to practice, learn the terminology, and got some game experience (which probably inspired him to work hard this offseason). He’ll get some preseason work and training camp to establish a rapport with the recievers and Knapp/Kiffin as play callers, and he knows he is the man, so he’s already off to a faster start in his first year than Marino or Roethisberger. He also has better natural ability than both.
July 6th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
I was talking to a guy that had a broke orbital last night at this picnic. He said he had reconstructive surgery and everything. He was saying, that he was fine in 6 weeks. He said he had double vision for about a week but by the 8th week he felt fine.
That was pretty encouraging…..although he didnt have someone slamming their helmet into his facemask.
July 6th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
I say cut Walker now,…void the contract,..cut him,..just like Im cutting one right now. eww.
July 6th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

July 6th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
does jerry or anyone proof read these articles before making them public. i found at least 3 mistakes.
July 6th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
People please shut up about Javon Walker!! Remember Paul Pierce getting stabbed damn near to death? What did he do the following season? Yeah lead the celts to the playoffs for the first time in 7 years!!! Shut the f–k up about Walker please now. I understand if Walker was gonnna be the main offensive weapon but he is not!! Damn I wish people understood football instead of being jackasses all the time.
July 6th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
And dammit Kwame Harris is a sorry ass 49er who needs to be off-ed just like the rest of them!! He is a better run blocker than pass blocker..great. He was a main staple in Frank Gore’s 2006 year…great. But that was at freaking right tackle!! You need the left tackle to be a better pass blocker than run blocker. The RT is the road grader.! Jerry you suck not mentioning that. When you look for a LT he needs that ability because the glaring weakness will show up when you play the better defense. I hope Henderson is eating his wheaties and so McQ because those needs to be the tackles. Until our draft picks pan we wont be squat! That means Aso,Huff, Routt,Bowie,Morrison,Howard,Williams,Russell,McFadden,Gallery,Grove,Bush Farglass(eventhough he really sucks),Branch,Scott,Higgins,Curry,Henderson,McQuistan, Shields,Schilens, Lechler and Seabass all need to step it up collectively. Free agents are free agents but championship teams are made through the draft!!!
July 6th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
someone please get rid of javon walker
July 6th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
someone please get rid of Spawn
July 6th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
MR are you a MR well anyways dont hate the game hate the player and thats what i am doing hating on javon
July 6th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Javon Walker will prove to be a good pickup in November. I dont even expect a huge year statistical wise but I expect timely big plays to happen during the three straight AFC west games in late novemeber-early december. Expect these numbers for Walker: 65 catches 13.8 per catch 900 yards 7 Tds with a few big time reverse plays going down. Mark it Walker will have a solid year for us but it won’t look as great because we got many weapons on offense this year.
July 6th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Good analysis Jedi. I think the logic is sound and hopefully that is what we see on Sundays. I would also like to see us use Russell a little in the run game as well. Take 3 steps, tuck and roll right behind Bush through the B or C on the left side just to keep those guys honest. If he can get used to stepping into the pocket and occasionally pulling it down and running it that should help set-up the longer pass plays if the RDE is having his way with whomever we “throw” at the OLT spot. Thanks again. Go Raiders!
July 6th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
I’m the one who really injured Walker because he didn’t shove that Don P bottles he was spraying up my 49er hole. No man denies this man 49er pu$$y!
July 6th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
They will protect Russell early on in the season but he will have a gate when he gets to unleash himself in November……….just you watch.
July 6th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
wow mr you like to use my name huh
July 6th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

July 6th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
All this Russell talk=zzzzzzzzzzzzz. They are gonna pace it and see where he is at week by week. Teams will be ready for us if our offense is too predictable. Everyone’s goal is to win the division first and then get in the playoffs and make a super bowl run. The raiders are no different
July 6th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
I can care less if Walker is a crack smoking buffoon!!! That crack speed better kick in on the double post and deep corner routes we will run this season!!!

July 6th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
3 words…. Mcfadden,Bush,Fargas.
These 3 men will make JaMarcus Russell a much better QB and make the Raiders defense look good by keeping them off the field.
Jerry, don’t forget how many rushing yards Fargas had last year in not very many games played, and I think Bush is going to be a beast. could be fun to watch.
July 6th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
p.s. don’t forget that we have D-Hall and Namdi and Gabril Wilson this year.
we can but 8 men in the box all day.
July 6th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Farglass aint making anyone better!! Farglass sucks
July 6th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
teams have some actual game to game film on Farglass now………by week 6 he wont be starting and his carries will significantly decrease by the time we play 3 straight AFC west games.which will ultimately decide the AFC West Title……….Mark it down

106 is not me. I’m the real me. Anyhow, again, I really do think we have a chance to win the Super bowl this year. You pansies who think we’re only going to win like 9 games can just go across the bridge and suck pole. We are the best team in the NFL. The whole league is a afraid of us. Al made all the right moves. Anyone who can’t see that is not a real fan.
Go Raiders!!
We’re the best, around, nothing’s ever gonna keep us down!!!
July 6th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Jerry, MR is posting under my name!! Can we do something about this? I worked long and hard to come up with the handle, “MR Is A Liar And Hater”. And now, MR is using that handle. This isn’t fair, Jerry. If you can’t resolve this issue, I’ll be forced to contact the authorities.

July 6th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
This blog doesn’t suck as bad as the Raiders to, that’s for sure.
July 6th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Yahoo News Reports:
Saints appear in no rush to sign Colston, Evans…
With less than three weeks remaining before the start of training camp, no new contract extensions appear imminent for New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston or guard Jahri Evans.
It’s harder to determine the market for young guys like Colston and Evans, because as impressive as they’ve been so far, they still don’t have lengthy track records. Colston’s numbers compare favorably to top receivers like Chad Johnson, Reggie Wayne and Larry Fitzgerald.
I say we make a play for Marques Colston and cut Javon Walker…
July 6th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
This is one year that the 49ers are going to be on the way up and in the playoffs while once again the Raiders will sink to the bottom as usual. you can blame Al Davis for that Raider morons.
July 6th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Kush, you want to cut Walker? You’re not a real fan. Take it across the bridge, pansie.
July 6th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Javon Walker is the best receiver in the league, Kush, and an important piece to our 2008-9 Super Bowl squad. If you can’t see that, then I don’t know what’s wrong with you. You must be a niner fan, homo.
July 6th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
I am still kind of drunk from Gay Pride but where are all the Raider koolaid drinkers? BHP, Marley, Oakglenn, Dakota, where are you?

July 6th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
The run game will be solid. The Raiders will be able to run left all day. Kwame and Gallery both can get to the second level/ down field in the run game. My interest was somewhat peeked by the Roll -Grove impact in strength and conditioning. Grove has been a soft player. He needed to bulk up and add strength. That is why Newberry outplayed him last season, maybe he is finally waking up and realizing he has to earn a starting spot.
I think that is Kiffin’s biggest contribution to the Raiders: he is giving reps to the players that earn them. Starting jobs are not handed out with contracts. Maybe that is why Grove and Curry have been hitting the weights so hard this off season, because they know they will have to compete.
July 6th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Kiffin has to learn to “spread” the love/ reps with his stable of backs. He did a good job of platooning Oneal and Griffith in last season, but he was too scared to go away from fargas last season when he saw how effective he was: he ran him into the ground, and only made Rhodes and Jordan even more frustrated. He should have gave more reps to Jordan and Rhodes.
Bush has not played in two years, and McFadden is a young kid who knows no fear. They do not posses the maturity to sit back like rhodes and Jordan. Kiffin needs to get them in the game.
Fargas should get something between 16-20 carries a game. McFadden should get 12-15: unless he gets the hot hand. Bush is a wildcard, but start him off with short yardage and go from there.
July 6th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
walker is good….. but colston sounds like a really really good choice!!!!!!!…..frickin brilliant!!!!
July 6th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Another thing on Gallery and Kwame. Both men were drafted into bad teams that were in a constant state of change from one year to the next. Kwame had 5 OC’s in 5 years. You can’t win like that. Gallery improved last year greatly, and I have no doubt he will improve again this season. Will he be considered a bust the rest of life: yes and most likely Kwame. They both can be late bloomers who find themselves with a franchise that has managed to get some stability.
Whats up with Mcquistain? Why has he not even been considered for the starting RT spot. I understand he was a mauler out of weber state drafted by Art Shell not Cable/ Kiffin, but he held it down last year after the Titans game where Odom ran through him.
I feel like Cable and Kiffin are forcing one of their players: Green (their FA) and Henderson (their pick they traded up for) at that spot. McQuistain might not be as nimble as the other two, but he seems to be more tenacious and passionate about the game. He had a lot of heart last year, and that showed down the stretch.
July 6th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Colston does not have speed. He is a big possesion receiver, but I do not think of him as a play maker. I think he can be a TJ Houshmanzadeh, but he will never be a Steve Smith, Chad Johnson, TO, Randy Moss…a game changer.
I grade Colston as a nice complimentary piece, but not a s a no.1. Reggie Bush is closer to a no.1 than Colston because you have to watch that guy because he can take it to the house on any play. Colston has a good QB with a good o line that allows him to get open. If he was in Oakland, he would be less effective than Ronald Curry.
July 6th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Walker is the best. Anyone who doesn’t believe it isn’t a real fan. Plain and simple. I hate you guys.
July 6th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Javon needs to loose some weight and produce. Al has taken away every excuse. He has gave him everything he has ever cried about. Al was desperate, but so are we as Raiders fans. This guy has no more excuses left. He better play with a patch on if he has to.
I understand the Javon and Tommy Kelly moves, and understand why they got their money. I do not understand why Namdi did not get his dough. That sends mixed signals to the players: on one hand, players were paid for potential and for what they might be able to do if healthy, and on the oher hand, Namdi was not paid because…? Can some fill in the blank on that one.
July 6th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
The Raiders are going to regret reaching for Kelly and Javon. The WR market was incredibly weak this offseason and I understand the desperation to get Jamarcus a play maker, but it still was a big reach. i would’ve felt better about these signings if Namdi and Burgess would have got their $. They could have offered Burgess an extension/ restructure with a signing bonus or something. Al held the company line their, but then went out and signed two players that were coming off of season ending injuries. Those types of decisions are mind boggling; most of all to people like Namdi, Burgess, and anyone else that might be dreaming of a pay day with the Raiders in the coming years.

Colston had 1202 yds last season, 75 yrds per game, and 11 TD’s. That sounds like a playmaker to me. And he’s only been in the league TWO years. He has a lot of room still for growth and improvement. I think he and Drew Carter along with Ronald Curry is a very formidable receiving corp.
July 7th, 2008 at 12:03 am
Smells like niner fans in here. All of you have your oakland ghetto passes revoked for one month. Keep dissing Javon, and it’s going to be a lifetime ban.
July 7th, 2008 at 1:57 am
Interesting question Jerry. Will we follow the pattern for those two rookies? We certainly may have to cut down on passing opportunites given the way the receiving corps isn’t shaping up right now. Still, there’s time yet. It’s also true that we look to have a really interesting running game and a short passing game. No way do we have the same defence that Miami and Pittsburgh had but the secondary is vastly improved. A secondary of Wilson, Hall, Aso and Huff should make things a lot better and for that matter might cut down on the passing completions of other teams, assuming that Huff does better as a free safety. I’m hoping that Wilson will bring back memories of Jack Tatum when opponents were sometimes more interested in looking over their shoulder than on catching the ball.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:30 am
I’m a Raider fan. I swear I am. If the Raiders do well this year, it will be despite Al Davis. If the Raiders $hit the bed, it will be all Al’s fault. I miss Gruden. I’m only here to annoy Raider fans. Don’t bother responding.
July 7th, 2008 at 6:38 am
Englandraider, how can you be so sure that we can’t defend? Have you seen something that gives you that assurance? What do you mean ‘no way’? how do you know?
We have in my estimation quite a few new faces and it’s a new year. Also if we can score points the defense has more opportunity to get after the QB.
More than anything we have a QB capable of scoring points much more freqently tha what we had last years. And a running game with the same strikeability. No ne knows what this defense is capable of until we see it.
Russell’s situartion is totally different than Rothlesberger or Marino’s, Marino had NO running Game and the Rothlesberger was playing on a championship calibre team. He just needed to protect the ball and make a few throws here and there.
Russell is on a team trying to gain confidence. But they have some very dynamic pieces, in the running game as well as the passing game for that matter. The media may not agree but I feel strongly that our WR corp has some real potential. It may take until midseason to really take off but there are some playmakers in this passing game. And a potentially great TE.
Our defense if it gels can be muh stronger than last years due to consistency and the big playmakers on that squad. Offenses will not find passing downs very easy, and I certainly feel that if we’re more focused to stop the run that we can be much better. My point is No one really knows what this team is capable of until they see it. Jerry’s blog while interesting has very little merit IMHO. Russell is in a totally different situation than either of those two QB’s he mentioned.
One of the things that I would readily bring out is that for the first time in many years we have the abilty to strike quickly from anywhere on the field and that changes EVERYTHING.
July 7th, 2008 at 6:42 am
Al is sacrosanct.
Don’t bother responding.
Just win baby.
July 7th, 2008 at 6:47 am
Kush I would submit to you that Walker, Curry and Carter offer the same formidability.
I think that a lot of you are way underestimating this WR corp. Everyone of these recievers is capable of having a big year and everyone just dismisses it because they play for us. If yu gave this same group to Brett Farve, I gaurantee you NO ONE would say that.
To me you guy’s always want what you don’t have. Is Colson talent wise better than Walker? No, and if we swapped them you guy’s would want Walker in less than a week. I gaurantee it. Your just a bunch of fickle losers…………period.
July 7th, 2008 at 6:57 am
Good post jerry but you can’t compare jruss and them other 2 guys. Everyone knows that we need time to get the pieces to fit, im concered about our wr’s especially jw I don’t know if we can depend on someone who isn’t right upstairs and our d-line there are many questions that are yet to be answered so in time we will tell. Raider 4 life!!!!!
July 7th, 2008 at 6:58 am
BHP, AMEN to post 179, good job Bro….
July 7th, 2008 at 7:10 am
You’re going a bit overboard there BHP. Your whole argument comes down to recognizing our outstanding potential this season. We all know you are in a great position to see it. But most other posters are more worried, seeing that our team has a lot of downside potential too. Let me list the obvious instances:
> Limited upgrages to the run D, a weakness you yourself were focused on before the draft.
> Key players with injury issues. Walker, Curry, Kelly, Fargas, Green, O’Neal…
> Coaching confidence. Rumors aside, even Kiffin has acknowledged some level of disharmony, and players could start promoting Lofton when we struggle.
> Rookie QB growing pains.
In short, fans who are posting here in early July have the right to sound off about our potential obstacles without being labeled fickle losers. As for me, I appreciate your optimism but have learned by now to keep both feet on the ground.

July 7th, 2008 at 7:29 am
Our d-line couldn’t stop a cold.Grady Jackson or Sam Adams could be had cheaply enough. We might only improve from comedic to poor, but it would give the defense a chance, and the offense some hope that we might be able to actually maintain a lead midway into the forth quarter.
July 7th, 2008 at 7:35 am
Jedi…good analysis….We have to run the ball and work off of play-action. JaMarcus has the gun that McClown didn’t have last year.
I actually liked McClown for his courage and attitude, but he lacked the tools.
The big question is, “can the D stop the run?”. I don’t see it happening. We dominated time of possession last year and still had a defense where the other team “could score when they needed to”. We lost 6 leads in the 4th quarter! One good thing is that our defensive backfield is improved….but let’s see if we can rush the passer without blitzing.
July 7th, 2008 at 7:41 am
Since I have heard nothin of that guy from the giants william joseph my guess is he may not be good idk but It do seem we have some depth don’t forget we have old man greg spires if he can be our trace armstrong and give us quality play. To be on the safe side id like to see us go after sam adams or grady jackson to clog that middle, because sands………..if he hasn’t showed us something by now he never will! I say cut him and bring in someone who wants to play
July 7th, 2008 at 7:53 am
Copen, I would love to see us blitz more to keep these other teams honest, I hate watching teams like the donkeys and the s.d. Super farters run trick plays on us because we are not aggressive and run a simple vanilla defensive scheme any team can game plan against 1 on 1 straight up beat your guy . Rob ryan needs to devise a scheme with some variety to get the opposing teams to think and audible and not just line up look at our guys and run the ball or drop back and pass so wee have more talent , more speed than you can get on d so I think we should mix it up and blitz more and not on obvious situations like we did last year
July 7th, 2008 at 7:58 am
“I actually liked McClown for his courage and attitude, but he lacked the tools.”
I liked McCown for the same reasons, thats why I cant understand when people mention Daunte as our vet QB for the backup spot…
He didn’t have courage and no attitude, and he didn’t have the tools anylonger - he was a DUD!
and in my eyes a traitor… but he was hardly under our banner, so thats perhaps a bit harsh, But I wont see that guy in Snb again…
July 7th, 2008 at 8:06 am
Who cares about backup QBs? If your starter goes down you are dead in the water no matter what. The NFL is too watered down with 32 teams to have quality backup QBs on every team…we don’t have one and we are not going to get one at this point.
If Russell goes down our plan will be run run run…
July 7th, 2008 at 8:07 am
…and run some more!
July 7th, 2008 at 8:08 am
…or let Bush or McFadden play RB/QB lol.
July 7th, 2008 at 8:10 am
This blog will cease to exist if there is not a sign on soon. The Dregs of the earth are taking over. Language and racism are taking this site downhill like a snowball in Hell. Every place else that has comments uses it why not here. Then there is some responsibility taken. Have a great day Raider Nation. Don’t lose this thing Jerry!
July 7th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Dakota..
I care, because the most important job, for the Backup QB is to help the starter, and like it or not Jammy needs all the help he can get when season starts…
July 7th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Its true,we need 1 or 2 BIG DTs.About 1 month ago we brought in Maricio Lopez from nfl europe.Ive looked on roster and dont see his name.Others say he was camp fodder, but at 6-1,329lbs,imho he was the type we needed in the middle of the line, low center of gravity, raw but with potential. When we signed him I saw it on trasactions, but now I dont see his name.Anyone know his status???We clearly we need beef in middle, and I hoped we could have used him
July 7th, 2008 at 8:36 am
LMN,
I can’t recall, but did Elway, Marino, Aikman, Montana or Favre each have some sage vet that turned them into all-pros? I doubt it.
Tui has been in the NFL for years, he can show Russell some things, otherwise it is up to the coaching staff to help Russell along.

I think I remember about 3 months ag reading that a certain skinny HB culd leap tall biuldings in a single bound. That he wuld turn the 10 yard runs by Fargas int 80 yard TD’s. That he would ake Russell a much better QB.
Now for some reason that he’s actually on the team I don’t read post with the same overblown optimism that filled every thread, concerning this one skinny HB.
Where are these people?? and what happened to that skinny HB??
All of a suddden he belongs to us and we’re back to Oh! woe is me!! attitude.
Listen, we have the same player don’t we? I feel very strongly that our ability to score has changed dramatically. Michael Bush, DMC, Walker, Carter whom several poster said we should get (until we got him) are here. Those additions have changed this team dramatically IMO. When you factor in the awesome talent at QB. I get very optimistic. Because I know what wins games TALENT………….period
The same is true with the defense Wilson, Hall, Edwards and Spires, not to mention Hartwell. Add talent to what I thought was a midrange defensive unit that played below it’s ability.
Now if we get the coaching staff to utilize that talent effectively, who knows what this team is capable of. The media is assuming much wont change, because Of you know who.
I say, if you took Russel alone and put him on last years team for 16 games. We win at least 2-4 additional games. That’s how much stock I put in the QB position alone.

Also Dakota, IMO Walter is as good as many starting QB’sin this leagu. Peersonally I’d take him over anything the 49ers have. I think Walter is every bit as good as Matt Leinert.

MCFADDEN!
10-6 baby!

BHP,
That sure wasn’t me pumping up DMAC. I wanted Dorsey, Ellis, or a trade down, and recall you wanting DT help yourself in the draft.

BHP,
I too think Walter has potential…thus far he has just been a victim of circumstances. Wrong HC and system and o-line in 2006.
I wish Kiffin had given him a shot last year instead of McClown…who knows, maybe he would have shown the ability to be a decent backup, or shown enough potential that some team might have thrown us a 3rd rounder for him???
I know one thing for sure…I hope he does not touch the field this year. Hopefully Russell goes the distance.

Bo,
Ellis or Dorsey???
Midget lover.

Time will tell, however I think they both have adequate size, lots of strength and great drive.
Plus, DMC has legs like Shelley Duvall.

BHP…
as Jammy and as well McFadden was drafted by the raiders, I instantly supported them… and I will for 3 years each, by then their productivity in the big league should talk for them self, if not I’ll be on their back again…

With the talent we have on offense we will be one of the most difficult teams to defend. I say a top ten offense by years end easy.

The running game was excellent for a team that was 4-12. And we led 9 games last year in the 4th qtr playing musical QB for most of the season. Some stability at QB. The addition of DMAC and Harris’s upgarade to the left side running game. Jamarcus’s ability to move the chains running occasiionally. Zach Miller and McFadden as outlets. And can you guys remeber the difference Rod Woodson made over Pope and Dorrestt? Might and Day. Thats what Gibril wilson will bring to this defense. Not to mention the return of Burgess who missed a lot of last season and thebest two CB’s in football. No more picking on 5′10″ Fabian Washington. I see big things happening. Off the field issues - smof the field issues. Ken Stabler said he could read the playbook just as well by the juke box light.

LMN, trust me we have the most multitalented offense in the league. Kiffin will have a difficult time trying to use them all.
I will be shicked if I’m wrong on either DMC or Russell. DMC is a tremendous talent and so is MB as good as Fargas is, those two have HOF type talent and so does Russel
LMN, I kid you not, this by far the most talented the Raiders have ever been offensively. By this time next year we should be the favorite to in the AFC west. And in 2 years the favorite to get to the SB in the AFC.
That’s how talented we are, the only thing that I can see that might hold us back is the Oline.

HLP….
I agree with all your assessments!
July 7th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Harry, Thanks for the help, but I sense they still don’t understand what we have.

BHP…
it was a response to your cry out to those who thought McFadden had skinny legs… I cant see where I doubted in our talent!?
I said it prior to last years camp that the best thing happened to this franchise not counting Madden or Flores, is Kiffin. I credit him the turnaround, and I credit Al Davis for letting Kiffin do this!

BHP…
who are you addressing? the other teams?, us fans who have said the same things as you tons of times?, the media?… who?
July 7th, 2008 at 9:17 am
I think 99% of the raiderfans are excited about what we got now, vs what we had in ‘06!
and I think most fans only have 2 minor concerns, O-line specifically the LT spot… and D-line, specifically the DT spot!….

Thanks Priest,
Dmac blowing up NFL defensive fronts won’t be his biggest asset. He will be swinging out of the backfield one on one with LBers and safties. Just that threat makes our pass protection better for our strong armed young QB to get vertical. Do you really want to blitz a team with DMAC in the backfield. You think the Saints offensive explosion and passing game turned frightening because Drew Brees is so good?

Or Marques Coltston?
July 7th, 2008 at 9:23 am
If Michael Bush is anything like he was in college, Justin Fargas will rarely touch the field. 3rd stringer behind Bush and McFadden.
Good riddance you injury-prone hands of stone overrated one year wonder!
Great team player though…
but to that I say…so what!
July 7th, 2008 at 9:24 am
HLP…
well I think it has very little to do with R. bush if thats whats you implying…
July 7th, 2008 at 9:25 am
OK LMN, I just seem to read when I come in here which hasn’t been often lately. That we need this and we need that especially WR’s. And I just disagree.
We may still need Oline and Dline, but I’m not sure about that until I see it for myself.
July 7th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Dakota..
yeah, i’m looking forward to that too, but
