Looking for a middle man
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 10th, 2008 at 11:55 am in Oakland Raiders.
Sixth in a series of concerns regarding the makeup of the 2008 Raiders with the reporting date approaching on July 24 at the Napa Marriott:
Lane Kiffin would never admit it, but the Raiders’ startling lineup will be set when the team reports to the Napa Marriott on July 23.
The only gray areas for the silver and black are at right tackle, where Mario Henderson hopes to unseat Cornell Green, and center, where a three-way battle between John Wade, Chris Morris and Jake Grove will be one of the most interesting competitions during training camp.
Kiffin has warned against reading too much into minicamp lineups, but the largest share of first-team reps during media availability periods has gone to Morris, the third-year player out of Michigan State.
Wade worked with the first team during one of the organized team activities, while Grove, who was thought to be the center of the future when he was drafted after Robert Gallery in 2004, has been rehabbing a knee injury and could be getting his last chance to claim the position assuming he is healthy enough to play when camp opens.
Morris is the least powerful and talented of the three players but may be the best at executing the cut blocking that the zone blocking concept requires. It is not unusual for zone blocking teams to utilize smallish centers who can move, guys who wouldn’t have a chance to even make a roster on power blocking teams. Denver did this for years with Tom Nalen.
Wade, 33, would be another temporary fix along the lines of Jeremy Newberry, although a more durable one.
In five seasons with Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, Wade has started 106 out of 126 games played. He is a smart, capable veteran who Kiffin said would be similar to Newberry in terms of being a leader to a relatively young line.
Although Newberry wanted to return, and Tom Cable wanted him to return, chances are Al Davis made the right call on this one. It was remarkable to see Newberry hold up as well as he did, and it’s difficult to imagine it happening again. He is probably better off as a backup at this stage of his career, which is what he will be in San Diego.
Grove came out of Virginia Tech with the reputation of having a nasty streak, and was in fact a bigger star at defensive tackle than as an offensive lineman as a high schooler in Virginia.
But all that attitude hasn’t been enough to move defensive linemen consistently at the NFL level. As a result, Grove has worked on building up his upper body while rehabbing his knee. It remains to be seen whether the added bulk will hurt Grove in terms of executing the footwork the blocking scheme requires.
Kiffin went out of his way to talk up Grove as an important part of the center competition. Short of that, if he is healthy enough, Grove would be the most likely of the three players to bring something back in the form of a training camp trade.

MR its good for you to bring up ol stuff..but when you get dinged by Marley you cry about him going back to find your garbage on RF.net..
…..
No crying at all. It is what it is. I said “from the start”, and that wasn’t true. From the start, I thought Shell would be like Gruden. But by the pre season, it was obvious to me Shell was a puppet. He ditched the run in the pre season, and never went back to it Obviously, crazy Al felt that he didn’t sign Aaron Collins (or was it Kerry George??…oh now, I know who it was…JaMarcus Walter!!) to hand off the ball, and Shell buckled. At least that’s my take. But I was off board before the season even started, and that’s what I meant. Were you? Or did you believe Shell would “bring back the discipline (mark your words…)”, all the way till December?
Anyhow, you guys are welcome to fish up any quote you want from me on the web. I’ll back up anything I’ve ever said. But have you seen Marley’s ridiculous explanation yet for saying, in the same breath, that Sapp was referring to Turner and Shell when bashing the organization, but that he was also somehow lying??? You’ve never seen me flip flop like that. I just misjudged Shell’s character coming in. I thought he was his own man. But it turned out he’s just another pushover that the crazy one hired because he was easy to control.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Of course, when I say marley said Sapp was lying, I’M the one who is lying, because what he actually said was ’should be taken with a grain of salt’, but what do you want from me, accuracy? Yeah, right. Good one!
July 10th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Jerry another good article…
I didn’t know Grove was a D-line guy in high School… Was he a run stopper, then I have an Idea when and how to use him again =)
I really hope Wade only is an interim center and that Morris will take over the spot during the season
July 10th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
LMN,
In high school most guys (if they’re that good) play both ways. Meaning offense and defense.

What he hell is happening Raider Nation!
July 10th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
137..
but rather than let him sit on the bench, I’ll try him out to see if he could stop the run, his upper strength is good enough…
well I know its just speculation, but if we cut him it would be another high pick wasted..
July 10th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Cut blocking or no, you need power on 3 & 1, no?
July 10th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
I would hate to see him get cut.
Grove was an absolute stud at VaTech….nobody can dispute that. I’m sure most of us thought he’d be the next in line of great Raider centers.
He needs to pull his head out, get healthy, and get his mean-on back.
Look on the bright side, at least we’re not JAX and had our former first rounder Matt Jones busted for coke.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
The Raiders couldn’t resign Newberry even if he was decent last year. They needed to get better, stronger and younger at the position. You really want Grove to be the take charge guy.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Don’t worry, though. I’m sure Al will figure something out — he always does, god love him!
July 10th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Grove has been plauged by injuries and has been victim to different coaches this will be his year to excel! Watch

KK,
If there’s one position Al’s had consistent success at it’s Center: Otto, Dalby, Mosebar, Robbins (pre-meltdown)….still hoping Grove is the next guy.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Yeah they’ve been good there traditionally. And I think O-lineman develop slower than other positions. It’s a strength position and older guys are stronger than younger ones. Grove could still be the one.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

July 10th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I agree we need a solid c to man the middle It was hard to watch especially when we played tenn watching haynesworth, even though he real real good just completely destroys our guys and we haven’t a chance to run our plays I also recalling shaun rodgers blowing things up like he’s an allstar, we need someone who has the strength to atleast hold their ground because russell is gonna need time and I would hate to see when we run a playaction pass russell will have his back to the line for a moment get crushed unexpectantly because we get destroyed in the middle
July 10th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Lamar Odom might get traded for Ron Artest and Kenny Thomas…
There Jerry, I am going to start the NBA talk again unless you clean this mess up!

Grove ain’t it… he will never be it…
Wade will work until we find the right guy…
but Grove??? no… he’s done…
less than ordinary at best…
July 10th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Jerry Mac….
Nice read, keep ‘em coming.
This will be one of if not, THE most important lineup decisions that Kiff & staff will make at this years camp.
Wade, could be the guy to start, for the fact Russell is going to need all the help he can get, in reading the blitz. This is where a experienced vet at Center can help him the most in this regard.
And the opposition will be giving Russell a ton of blitz looks at him, just to try and confuse him and to test him. Or to try and put him on his considerable backside.
Jerry, I had a hunch that it was the wrong NAPA for old Chevy parts..

MATT JONES arrested for cocaine possession. said he was in his car cutting it up w/credit card. I thought he was going to be a great player! always hurt, though. qb at arkansas and wr at jacksonville.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Dakota; if the league allows that trade i’ll never watch bball again. it’s getting ridiculous. They’re suppose to be fair trades.. Gasol was a x-mas gift!
How about philly dumping 2 players and a #1 for a #2??? WTF???? how is that fair??? they didn’t even get a player. they just wanted to free up $ for Brand. how can you trade a #2 for a #1 BEFORE the draft????? the league is a joke.

July 10th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
You know who copped the dope for Matt Jones?? Javon.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Better hope it wasn’t another #1 pick from Arkansas. That hooked up Matty.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
can’t be true… Javon woulda got hisself robbed before he would have been able to give it to Jones…
July 10th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
T Boone Pickens is an old-school oil guy, and he knows we can’t drill our way out of this mess. Solar panels in the Southwest and wind farms in the midwest, lets do it. BTW, why does Matt Jones have to do his yayo in his car? Couldn’t spring for a room at the motel 8 to be a little more covert?
July 10th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I wonder how Javonagogetsomeblow Walker is doing. The two prisoners have pleaded not guilty. I can’t wait to hear their story.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Morris is a certainty for the roster because he can also cover the OG position - and we don’t have much depth behind Gallery and Carlisle. Unless Wade struggles with the scheme, his leadership and toughness will be invaluable. That makes Grove the odd-man-out.
I wonder if Kiff is talking Grove up in order to increase his trade value, or whether Grove too may make the transition to OG?
And don’t forget Jesse ‘Mr Headlights’ Boone. He just may surprise some people in camp and find a spot. Had anybody heard of Jon Condo last July?
I still think RT is more of a worry that Center. I have read the postings about Green and Henderson, but nobody has yet explained why McQuistan is not in contention. He did a solid job in the last four games of the season.
I disagree with Jerry, I think this OLine is far from settled and that Kiff, Knapp and Cable are going to be tinkering with the line-up well into August. Expect some surprises.

Why? I hate that trade. I’d take LO over Artest any day…Artest has to play one-on-one to get his shots…bye bye triangle.
I don’t know…Kobe + Artest would be a great defensive combo…

Yeh, when Marley says that you should take what Sapp says “with a grain of salt”, what do you think Marley is implying there, that Sapp is being honest?

Axle Rose is gay. It’s common knowledge. That’s why Slash isn’t going back. Sorry, LMN.
Broncos 10, Raiders 0. Broncos hit a 40 yarder after recovering a J Russ fumble. J Russ dropped back 7 steps and got pounded by a lb and a corner. Ball went straight into the air. Kiffin’s headset isn’t even plugged in. He’s reading a book. 10-0, Donks.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Raider mount drive, come up with field goal. 10-3, Denver. Raiders drive consists of mostly short passes and running. While Jano boots extra point, Greg Knapp is on the sideline phones..his face is red, and he looks intimidated.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Denver 13, Raiders 3.
Raiders ball.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
INTERCEPTION. J Russ drops back 7 steps and fires down field just as he’s pounded by 3 blitzers. Ball lands practically in Bailey’s lap.
Denver Ball, on Raider 45.

I don’t give flyings rats ass about who is and who isn’t gay, fact is, they made some fantastic albums and some of the best rock songs…

I think McQuiston is more of a power player.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Raider D holds. Donks settle for another FG. 16-3, donks.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
FUMBLE.
Russell is pounded again, dropping back 7 steps. Denver D lineman lands on the ball. Bronco’s ball, Raiders 35. Lane Kiffin looks up from his book, then looks back down and flips the page. Knapp looks dejected. Sideline phone is ringing.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
TD Denver. 23-3.
Halftime.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Second half. Denver stays on the ground, shreds the Raiders D to their 25 yard line. Settles for field goal. 26-3, Donks.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
At halftime MR’s mom comes down stairs and is somewhat surprised to find her son jerking it to pictures of Joe Montana; he usually uses a picture of Steve young.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Raiders 3 and out. Punt. Now late in 3rd quarter. Denver’s previous FG drive to open the half took 10 minutes off the clock. Rob Ryan is livid…yelling at Knapp. Raiders’ D is watching the argument while drinking gatorade.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
A male patient is lying in bed in the hospital, wearing an oxygen mask
over his mouth and nose. A young student nurse appears to give him a
partial sponge bath.
>’Nurse,’ he mumbles from behind the mask, ‘are my testicles black?’
>Embarrassed, the young nurse replies, ‘I don’t know, Sir. I’m only here
to wash your upper body and feet. He struggles to ask again, ‘Nurse,
please check. Are my testicles black?’ Concerned that he might
elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his
testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers.
She raises his gown, holds his manhood in one hand and his testicles in
the other. Then, she takes a close look and says, ‘There’s nothing wrong
with them, Sir. They look fine.’
>The man slowly pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her, and says very
slowly, ‘Thank you very much. That was wonderful, but listen very very
closely, ‘Are - my - test - results - back?’
July 10th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Kiffin is now asleep. Camera’s on him.
Denver is steadily running the ball. Down to Raider 25 now. End of 3rd quarter.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Bell slashes Raiders’ D for a 15 yard TD run. 33-3, Donks. Ryan is still yelling at Knapp. Kiffin wakes up, sits up on bench. Smiles. Starts counting money.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Half way through 4th quarter. Denver has allowed some of their fans to suit up. McFadden slices for 20 on a draw play.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Another handoff to McFadden. This time he slashes Denver’s 3rd string D along with some of their fans for 30 yards. Raiders within striking distance.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
MR squirts a little more Jergens into his palm for round two.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Shell was an idiot, just ask the coaches he coached against. They will tell you he never made halftime adjustments and his answer to blitzes was to hold everyone in to block but 2 receivers. More crap from Jerry about Davis making the call on Newberry. Kiffin is calling the shots and Davis is just signing off on what he wants to do. Give the Davis is the Sith Lord a rest, maybe we can put him into a Darth Vader suit when he can no longer sit in his wheel chair. Then he can live forever so you guys always got something to pin on him, lol.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Russell nails Walker with a 20 yard bullet! Tooooouchdowwwwn…..RRRRRRRAAAAAIDeerrssss!~!!!!!
Walker taunts fans in back of end zone. Points to the special eye shield on his helmet as he’s pelted with plastic beer bottles.
33-10, Denver. 2 minutes left in game.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
The four questions that will determine the success, or not, of next season:
1) Can we stop the run?
Well, I think Sapp’s retirement will help. He was a pale shadow of past glories last season and he left Sands very isolated. Much depends on Kelly’s fitness and whether Warren and/or Joseph can make a consistent contribution. I think we will be better but still vulnerable against the better running attacks.
2) Can the Oline bully opposing DLines and create enough openings for our talented backfield?
We have arguably the deepest backfield in the league - three top-class RBs (Fargas, Bush and McFadden) and two very capable FBs (Mr Pain and Griffith). We should be hopeful that Cable can extract further improvement, but we don’t have too much depth on the roster.
3) Can we give JR enough pass-protection to keep the defense from flooding the box?
Harris has genuine ability but he is a big risk. RT looks a real problem and we don’t want Miller just reserved for blocking duty. I expect Kiff to move that pocket and to try keep JR away from the rushers rather than rely on the blocking.
4) Can we find a DB who can successfully mark out the slot receiver?
Asomugha and Hall should be a match for the wide-outs, but many teams will use a 3rd WR against us - remember how the Colts tormented us last season? Routt appears earmarked for the Nickel, but he has much to prove. We could do with somebody like Rashad Baker, John Bowie or Chris Johnson making a real shot at this 3rd position, because it could be our achilles heel.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Newberry, another 30+ year old has been Kiffin has weeded out, just like Sapp.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Raiders onside kick fails. Denver kneels. Game over. 33-10, Broncos. Ryan runs right to locker room. Security wakes Kiffin up on bench, Kiffin proceeds to shake hands with Shanahan.
Following monday, Raider announce Lane Kiffin is still the head coach, and is still in complete control of the team. They also insist that there was never a rift between Kiffin and Al. Kiffin unavailable for comment.

Evening fellas…I´ll be quick:
MR says:
“But by the pre season, it was obvious to me Shell was a puppet. He ditched the run in the pre season, and never went back to it.”
Fact: During the 2006 pre-season the Raiders were ranked 6th in rushing attempts with 32.6.
Fact: Over the first 6 regular season games of 2006 the Raiders ran the ball 160 times and threw it 163.
Fact: The Raiders passed more than they ran in just 2 out of those 6 games. In 3 games they ran it more and in another game the running and passing attempts were even.
Note: The Raiders had double digit deficits to overcome after 3 quarters of play in 3 of those 6 games.
Fact: Over the first 6 regular season games of 2006 the Raiders averaged a respectable 26.6 carries for 116 yards.
Note: 3 of those games were vs Defenses ranked in the top 12 vs the run in 2006 (Bal(2), SD(7) and Den(12).
July 10th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

4) Can we find a DB who can successfully mark out the slot receiver?

I hope they in slot-situations let Hall cover the slot, because he is better to cover than Routt and we need that in the open, and then let Routt have the outsides, because he then have the sidelines to help him…
in normal situation, its of course Nnamdi and Hall on both sides…
And remember Routt is taller than Fabian… so all in all way better backfield =)

“The fastest way for Al Davis to clean up his current MESS is to retire, and hand the team over to someone who can bring our team back to it’s success that it saw in 2000.
Art Shell would be good enough for me.”
- Now here´s what MR said today, post 817 to be precise:
“Of course even a Davis loyalist can now admit Art Shell was a mistake. But you see, us smart fans called it from the start.”

The Oakland Raiders has been shopping LaMont Jordan for a couple weeks now and the Detroit Lions are one of the few teams that have shown interest in the running back.
June 9, ESPN.com: The LaMont Jordan stalemate in Oakland has started to move some. The player recently visited the Detroit Lions, his agent Alvin Keels said.
It was a pre-trade visit arranged by the Raiders and Lions. Oakland has been trying to trade Jordan in the past month. The team kept Jordan out of its early June minicamp as it attempted to deal him. Yet, the market was slow and the visit to Detroit was the only real movement in a possible trade.
However, there has been little contact between the Lions and Keels since Jordan’s visit and it is unknown if the Lions will proceed in finalizing the trade. It would likely take a sixth or seventh-round draft choice to get Jordan.

7th round pick for Lamont, sounds like a steal. I mean we only got a 5th round pick for Moss, a Hall of Famer.

If Al Davis trades Jordan for a six pack of beer and Davis buys the beer we still would be getting the better end of the deal…
July 10th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Marley, fair enough.
But if I could add to that…and I’ll be quick:
Week one, vs. SD: We ran the ball 20 times to SD’s 48 times.
Week two, vs Baltimore: We ran the ball 26 times, which is a little better but certainly not enough. Unless you’re the 2002 Raiders, the modern day Colts, or the ’80’s Niners, it’s just stupid to rely on your pass. You have to run the ball in this game. Period So, we’re into week two without running the ball more than 30 times per game.
Week four (3 was our bye), vs. Cleveland: We run the ball only 24 times. Less than 30, again. Note, all of our opponents have ran the ball 30 plus times on us thus far.
week five , vs. 49ers. We run the ball 23 times. The niners run the ball 41 times. Un f’n real. I’ve never heard of the 49ers running the ball that much.
NOTE——We’re 4 games into the season, Marley, and we’re yet to run the ball 30 times per game. And this with a very green passing offense with a first year qb.
Week six, vs. Donks: FINALLY! We run the ball 30 times (exactly). Denver runs it 31 times. They beat us by 10…which is a lot smaller of a margin than what they usually beat us by. We run the ball 40 times, and wear out their defense, who knows…
week seven, vs. Arizona. WE RUN THE BALL 37 TIMES, AND DESTROY THEM. First win of the year. Only second game we run more than 30 plus yards, when our first string demonstrated they could establish a run in the pre season.
week eight, vs. Steelers, we run the ball 29 times and win. So, one game where we run the ball less than 30 times and come out with a victory. A win is a win. So I have to give props. But I think we all know this formula doesn’t hold up.
week nine, vs. Seattle. We run the ball 13 TIMES!!! and Seattle easily handles us 16-0. Seattle ran the ball 39 times.
week 10, vs. Donks: 26 rushes. Loss.
week 11, vs. KC: We run the ball 34 times, yet come up short. Again, one of the few cases to work against my theory.
week 12, vs. Dolts, again: We run the ball 26 times. Lose.
week 13, vs. Texans: 26 rushes, loss.
week 14, vs. Bengals: We run the ball 16 times. Get crushed 27-10. Cincy runs the ball 39 times!
week 15, vs. Rams: We run the ball 18 times to their 35. Get crushed.
week 16:, vs. kc again: 24 rushes to their 38. Get crushed.
week 17, vs. Jets: 22 rushes to their 37. They kill us.
Marley, all you demonstrate with your “facts” is that there are teams that didn’t need to run the ball as much as we did. If we couldn’t figure out by week 5 that our pass heavy attack wasn’t working, then maybe we’re in the wrong league.
Now Marley, if you want to convince me that Art Shell, who lived for pulling out and knocking ends and linebacker into the middle of next week on running plays back when he played the game, would insist on airing it out this stubbornly, even when faced with the obvious fact that it isn’t working, then you must think I’m as stupid as Oakglenn.
You know good and well who was …calling him on that sideline phone…and telling him to throw the ball. Al doesn’t sign quarterbacks to hand the ball off, even when it will help us win.

MR, that was 2006 and the Shell/Walsh era, come on at least look at 2007 with Kiffin and company. To your point, Al Davis wasn’t calling Shell he calls the Defense, when Shell was re-hired he stated that the Rams offense (greatest show on turf) was the old RAIDERS offensive scheme (per say)and Walsh would bring that to Oakland and the linemen would block, block and block some more. For Shell’s comments regarding the Power running game he would bring back. The Offensive Linemen stated after Shell was fired that the blocking scheme change from week to week, and they were confused by the way Irv & Jackie would change there coaching approach each week, that should tell you that your blaming the wrong guy for Shell losing the respect of the players. Not to mention the Porter issue-that was all Shell. That was the problem with Shell coming back, he was in over his head and the NFL had pasted him by and at the bed & breakfast Walsh was pasted by in 1988. Now knowing that Shell is a GREAT RAIDER, don’t even try to say Al Davis was calling for the chuck and duck-it was all Shell and Walsh face the facts.
July 10th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
ok enough with all these bs stats, the reason we couldnt run the ball last year is, are offense would constantly go three and out, leaving are defense on the field to get ran on, so MR. all them bs stats aint nothing. This year will be different.
July 10th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

That first Art Shell game in 2006 against SD was horrifying, appalling, and downright dreadful to boot! We looked like a women’s powder puff team. Art was in a diabetic coma on the sideline. Al sharted himself in anger. Jim Otto stomped his feet in disappointment. Shanahan was at home watching the game on the TV installed in his tanning bed, laughing his azz off.
It was bad, real bad.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
MR…post 93.
Uhmm…what?.
Let me explain something to you, your claim that “Davis ordered Shell to ditch the run since the preseason” is the argument here…so:
- It´s not about how many times your opponent runs the ball. That has nothing to do with the argument.
- It is however, about the Pass-Run ratio. After 6 weeks we had a 50% Pass-Run ratio, it didn´t mean much because the offense was bad, but that was nowhere near an “air it out” offense, it is as balanced as it gets.
- Finally, you do realize that when your team is down in the 2nd half they will eventually be forced to abandon the run, do you?.
And usually, the team with a lead will sit on it and try to run the clock out, right?.
Well, in 06 the Raiders faced double digit deficits before the 4th Quarter even started on 8 out of 16 games.
- See MR, it´s not about throwing numbers out there, you have to look at the context and analyze it.
So, stop trying to work your way around the argument here, just wave the white towel and I´ll let go.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

July 10th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
In the first Art Shell game against SD, the only play that worked was a quick pass to Moss, who turned it upfield and got a first down or two. Then after one play, he threw the ball in the face of SD defender got a 15 yard penalty and that was that.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
The Raiders’ 2006 season ended faster than a MR romantic encounter with Steve Young.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

The new restrictions are posted at http://www.raiders.com. I urge all Raider fans to contact the Raiders at (510) 864-5000 x3224 or email jhamilton@raiders.com. hahaa power guard. that’s pretty good. but then he’ll be trying to beat guards off the dribble. …
there was a story of ralph sampson complaining that he wanted to be a guard (at 7′4″). coach said, “everyone wants to be a guard until you do guard drills”

Is a draft pick all we can trade Jordan for? Couldn’t we atleast trade him to a none division rival for a practise squad guy? We’d still take the cap hit and wed pay very little for the new guy?
Obviously a pick would be nicer, but atleast we should get him out of the division. While he’s healthy he can be productive. I’d would rather keep him out of the hands of the Queefs.

Marley, why do you think we ran the ball only 13 times against Seattle in ‘06? They won 16-0. So, it wasn’t because we were trailing. We just came off of two straight wins, where we ran the ball significantly more than usual in one of those wins. Seattle’s run D was 22nd in the league in ‘06. So, surely it wasn’t because we were facing the Steel Curtain, either.
No spinning, Marley. Just give me your best reason as to why we ditched the run in a campaign for a third straight win, a feat we haven’t reached sine ‘02 (and still haven’t reached to this day), when we ran the ball 29 times and 37 times in our two previous games, AGAINST BETTER RUN DEFENSES, to the tune of victories?
Don’t just throw numbers out there, Marley. Put some context behind them.

Suprise,.. espn has the raiders te situation as 20th in the nfl! they’re dumbasses.
Zach Miller is an athletic player who uses his deceptive speed to stretch the seam. Miller has reliable hands and shows great awareness in traffic, and his quickness, agility and size allow him separation from defenders. He isn’t a physical blocker but gains leverage early in the play with technique and quickness. John Madsen is a young, undersized player but gives head coach Lane Kiffin another decent target in the passing game with his ability to flex off the line or line up as an H-back and create mismatches.

Got it? Good. Oh yeah, I forgot: 4) Ron Wolf. That is all. Carry on.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
MR…post 168.
Very simple, Seattle scored on each of their first 3 possessions of the game to take a 13-0 lead and they dominated the time of possesion battle to the tune of a 12 minute edge.
Seattle ended up controlling the ball for a whopping 36 minutes vs Oakland´s 24 and they held a 13 point lead for most of the game.
Those are the same adverse conditions that I described in my previous post, thank you for providing a good example MR.
But hey, why stay on the Seattle game? Let´s see….
The previous two games before Seattle the Raiders ran it 37 and 29 times, the following two games after Seattle they ran it 36 and 34 times respectively.
What was the common denominator between all those run heavy games?? they were close and the Raiders held a lead into the 2nd half in each of those games.
It allowed the Raiders to have some control and to execute their gameplan. A gameplan that, judging by the number of carries involved, obviously included a heavy dose of runnning the football.
Wait…30-plus carry games? past mid-season?….
That´s impossible!.
MR please tell us that story again, you know, the one about how Al Davis ordered Art Shell to “ditch the running game since the preseason and he never went back to it”.

If you can’t tell the difference, then you deserve this site to be the mess that it is. They’ve accomplished their goals.

Posts like this are the reason that 70% of the country is anxiously awaiting January 20th of next year, when Republicans will no longer control the White House. Sorry if that’s too political.

909 It doesn’t matter. Dude, I’m the point guy for this. My name has been stolen more times than probably every one else on this board combined!!!! The point is there are haters that come here repeatedly just to ruin this for Raider fans. The long term posters have pointed them out, repeatedly. But when these haters come back, some posters embrace them like they’re Raider Hall of Famers on a sea cruise and then the cycle starts again. Registration isn’t gonna do squat. Ignore the lame haters trying to ruin the site. It’s pretty obvious who they are.

# Bob Marley Says:
July 10th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
“Very simple, Seattle scored on each of their first 3 possessions of the game to take a 13-0 lead and they dominated the time of possesion battle to the tune of a 12 minute edge.
Seattle ended up controlling the ball for a whopping 36 minutes vs Oakland´s 24 and they held a 13 point lead for most of the game.”
…….
Marley, you’re not the only one with access to NFL.com. It’s open to the public. You should really consider that before making such a lame case.
The opening drive of that game the Raiders passed every down and went 3 and out. Fine. Nothing wrong with keeping them honest and seeing if they’ll give you the pass.
Now, here’s the Raiders’ second drive of the game. It’s still the first quarter, Marley. And they’re only down one score.
J.Brown kicks 70 yards from SEA 30 to end zone, Touchback.
1-10-OAK 20 (10:39) L.Jordan left guard to OAK 19 for -1 yards (C.Darby, L.Tatupu).
2-11-OAK 19 (10:07) A.Walter sacked at OAK 9 for -10 yards (sack split by L.Tatupu and C.Darby).
3-21-OAK 9 (9:33) (Shotgun) L.Jordan right tackle to OAK 11 for 2 yards (R.Bernard).
4-19-OAK 11 (8:58) S.Lechler punts 29 yards to OAK 40, Center-A.Treu, downed by OAK-S.Schweigert.
—Why don’t you try a different running play on second down, instead of going back to the pass that Seattle is obviously being stingy against, and especially when you’ve succeeded with the run the previous two games, and you’re playing a defense that isn’t great against the run?
Now, here’s the Raiders’ 3rd possession. They’re now down by 10, but it’s still the first quarter!
J.Brown kicks 70 yards from SEA 30 to end zone, Touchback.
1-10-OAK 20 (5:46) A.Walter pass incomplete short middle to C.Anderson. PENALTY on SEA-J.Peterson, Defensive Pass Interference, 5 yards, enforced at OAK 20 - No Play.
1-10-OAK 25 (5:41) A.Walter pass incomplete short left to R.Williams.
2-10-OAK 25 (5:36) A.Walter pass short left to R.Moss to OAK 43 for 18 yards (M.Trufant).
1-10-OAK 43 (5:02) A.Walter FUMBLES (Aborted) at OAK 43, recovered by OAK-J.Fargas at OAK 39. J.Fargas to OAK 39 for no gain (R.Davis).
2-14-OAK 39 (4:21) A.Walter pass short middle to Z.Crockett to OAK 45 for 6 yards (L.Hill, B.Fisher).
3-8-OAK 45 (3:40) (Shotgun) A.Walter pass short left to R.Curry to SEA 44 for 11 yards (L.Tatupu).
1-10-SEA 44 (3:03) A.Walter sacked at 50 for -6 yards (R.Bernard).
2-16-SEA 50 (2:28) A.Walter sacked at OAK 45 for -5 yards (C.Terrill).
3-21-OAK 45 (1:59) (Shotgun) A.Walter sacked at OAK 39 for -6 yards (C.Terrill).
4-27-OAK 39 (1:31) S.Lechler punts 61 yards to end zone, Center-A.Treu, Touchback.
—11 play possession, and not one run play. Both first downs came via big plays from Moss and Curry. Fine. But how does the drive end?
If you want to make the case that it was Shell and/or Walsh’s call, go ahead. Of course, this would contradict your claim that we didn’t prematurely ditch the run. But of course, you also claimed that Sapp was referring to Turner and Shell when blasting the organization last week, and in the same comment also suggested Sapp was lying, by saying that his statements need to be taken with a grain of salt. So what’s to stop you here.
July 10th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
You know, Marley, I don’t know if I’ve ever asked you this. So I will now.
Why do you believe the Raiders have been as bad as they have been since the Super Bowl loss?
What single INDIVIDUAL person is MOST to blame for it?
And, most importantly, why?
July 10th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
MR you are to blame.
OK I will vote because the mentally stable Raider fans in here asked me to.

See 909 you miss the entire point. Here is a guy who posts as others, rips the Raiders at every turn, posts racist crap, tries to tear this site down, and you agree with him. there is your answer right there. Why would anyone at the Bay Area News Paper Group do ANYTHING, WHEN you put up with the mess???? And CONDONE IT???????? And they know what’s going on. It’s up to YOU to stand up to this crap not agree with it.
