Hackett set to join Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, July 11th, 2008 at 7:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.

I’ll come clean. The last four posts were done in advance of a family vacation and posted while I was driving to and from Long Beach and a cruise ship headed to Catalina Island and Mexico. Never checked an e-mail or my phone during that time.

Upon my arrival home today, I received word the Raiders had hired or were going to hire Paul Hackett, the veteran offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who was most recently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Raiders senior execuitve John Herrera confirmed coach Lane Kiffin and Hackett have talked about a consultant’s job, but said nothing had been finalized. Kiffin is currently on vacation and there likely would be no announcement _ if there is one at all _ until next week.

The Raiders often simply add people to their organization, with confirmation coming the day they’re either seen on the field or around the building or when their name is added to the Web site.

Hackett is regarded within the league as an excellent technician and teacher of offense, and particularly quarterbacks.

It was Hackett who hired Jon Gruden on his college staff at Pittsburgh. It was Hackett who recommended Rich Gannon to both Al Davis and Gruden. He sent Gruden a tape of Gannon converting a broken play against the Raiders in 1997 for a touchdown, and extolled Gannon’s skills as a leader.

He worked for Gruden on the Bucs staff, on the same staff with Monte Kiffin.

Hackett would give the Raiders an extra set of eyes as the Raiders work on developing Russell, assisting Kiffin, Greg Knapp and John DeFilippo.

Hackett’s critics, however, believe his offense is far too conservative and horizontal. His teams will pile up a high completion percentage, but too often will throw in front of the stake and miss a chance at moving the chains or getting big plays.

As offensive coordinator, Hackett was a punching bag for the media with the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock instituted a campaign to “sack the Hack.”

While Hackett has ties to the Kiffins, he also has a relationship with Davis. It would put Hackett in roughly the same position as Marc Trestman, who was brought in in a similar role under Gruden and was elevated to offensive coordinator once Gruden was sent to the Bucs.

In other words, if Kiffin or Knapp were to leave, there is an immediate in-house candidate with a depth of knowledge of both Russell and the offense for the sake of continuity. Hackett’s offense may not be what Davis prefers, but the owner has historically been much more open to suggestions regarding offensive philosophy than defensive philosophy.

Kiffin’s status was tenuous in the early stages of the offseason, and he may need a quick start to retain his job. Knapp is in the final year of his contract and it’s widely believed among knowledgable NFL people that he will be asked to join Jim Mora in Seattle next year as offensive coordinator.

I thought you meant D.J. Hackett when reading the title, I figured you’d lost it Jerry!!

Not bad hiring tho, only thing that sucks is this directly tells Kiffin “I’ve got your replacement already lined up.” I hate ultimatums, but Big Al sure as hell doesn’t!

  2. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

    Jerry,

Welcome back. You have some catch-up reading to do…many noteworthy comments awaiting you from your loyal readers.

Now, let me be the first to acknowledge you as the editorial version of Dave Casper, our “ghost to the post”. Way to work smart, not hard.

Hope the time away was therapeutic. My only request is an update on Nnamdi, even if it is only a confirmation of no news (bad news).

    Bo Sch. J.

  3. Terrapin Says:

hmmm …what shall the Terrapin make of this …maybe nothing or maybe there’s just too many conservative leaning minds in the coop (Knapp & Hackett together?). To be honest, I don’t know much about Hackett though or what his role/influence will be.

  4. Terrapin Says:

I was just thinking about our Monday night opener and you know what? It occurred to me that Denver has virtually NO game film on this offense. You seriously can’t depend on last year’s film to tell you much of anything except that we can run the ball & may have gotten better at it. The ‘08 edition is equipped with new WRs, Linemen, RBs and most importantly a fresh new, dynamic QB. QBs can change everything about an offense and they have virtually nothing on Russell. That should yield some sort of advantage come opening day.

  6. John Elway's Teeth Says:

Is anyone else getting tired of all these “Potential replacement coaches” being hired? Maybe another set of eyes to watch and/or teach JaMarcus is a good thing…If that’s why these guys are there. If they’re being hired to be Al’s “Plan B” or to show Kiffin how easily he can be replaced, well that’s just stupid. Great to have you back Jerry.

  7. dick v Says:

elway’s teeth, i understand what your saying, but what Jerry’s saying is Al’s emmo. If Kiffin was to struggle this season(what ever Al’s defines that as)Al will have his head coach James lofton, and OC/ QB coach already in the fold. It makes sense. Kiffin brought in a young unproven QB coach, Al brought in a veteran to hedge his bets. Essentially this hiring is an insurance policy.

  8. FIRE KIFFIN Says:

I’m not getting tired of it.

    Just Win Baby.

  9. texguy Says:

I think it will be good motivation for Kiffin to know that he is replaceable if he cannot live up to expectations.

  10. texguy Says:

Also if Kiffin gets fired or leaves at the end of the season, we will not have to go through all the coaching circus with the interviews, speculation, etc.

Let’s see…..Kiffin has one of 32 Head Coaching jobs in the NFL, Isn’t that motivation enough? Let him do his job. If he can’t Hack it (pun intended) then fire him.

The name “Paul Hacket” sounds somewhat familiar… Wasn’t he also the head coach for USC a while back?

  16. Sabers Says:

If anyone had any doubt left about the Raiders’ total commitment to the ground game, this hire should put a wooden stake through it.

Disgruntled Kansas City Chiefs fans, frustrated by their team’s lack of explosiveness on offense, used to refer to this guy as Paul “Can’t” Hackett. And now he’s here.

    Ohhhh my.

Another riveting post, this one will keep me up all night.

  18. K-Rock Says:

In the nine seasons Hackett spent as a coordinator with the Jets (2001-04) and the Kansas City Chiefs, his teams compiled a 90-54 record and qualified for the playoffs seven times.

In addition, Hackett has coached some of the game’s most memorable offensive players during his career, including Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Marcus Allen, Curtis Martin, Steve Bartkowski and Rich Gannon.

“Over the years I have been fortunate to have had some great individual coaches, and Paul is one of the best,” said Montana. “He is one of the hardest workers and … a perfectionist in everything he does. Paul is easy to work with as a quarterback and he understands the little parts of the game because he has been there.”

During his four years as the offensive coordinator in Kansas City, Hackett helped Gannon blossom from a journeyman quarterback into an eventual NFL MVP.

“Paul is one of the most dynamic offensive minds in the game today,” said Gannon. “I didn’t have the opportunity to work with Paul until my eighth year in the league and only then did I realize how much there was to learn about the game. A lot of my success while in Oakland can be attributed to my relationship with Paul while we were both in Kansas City.”

  19. silver and black chef Says:

Great work k-rock, sounds good to me, and a definate shout out to Elways Teeth, post 13 took the words out of my mouth

  20. Scottish Raider Says:

For once, this is a hugely encouraging sign and might indicate that Kiff still has real influence and that he and Al are actually working together.

Hackett is close to Monte Kiffin and Jon Gruden. He also built his reputation by developing the sort of high-tempo, high-percentage offense run by Pete Carroll at USC. Philosophically, you couldn’t get an OC closer to Kiff.

I think Hackett is initially there to help Kiff, by helping JR and by giving Kiff an extra pair of eyes and ears. Medium-term, Hackett is there to shadow Knapp and to provide continuity if Greg jumps to Seattle.

A smart, sensible, collective decision. Most un-Raiders-like, but a really good sign.

  21. MR Says:

Sounds like Kiff’s on his way out. Hackett’s probably there to placate the fans who like Kiffin. In a year or two, he’ll be gone too and Al will have someone in there running the vertical. Probably Lofton. We really might have 10 straight last place seasons. Would that be a record, Jerry?

And, Jerry, get it right…Al Davis sought out Gannon himself because he felt Gruden could use him for his vertical offense. Don’t you dare give Hackett the credit for recommending him. And, we all know Gruden wanted Jeff George…

  22. Oakglenn Says:

Actually the only one on his way out around here is MR and his cute little 9er jammies and his dog named Dakota.

  23. JediRaider Says:

    Great post K-rock -

I like the move (if it is finalized) - the two weakest members of Kiff’s team were DeFillipo and last year’s WR coach (Coe) - Lofton is a huge upgrade at WR coach and Hackett seems to have a great reputation as a QB coach - I don’t like the offensive philosophy necessarily, but it jibes with Kiffin’s a little bit - maybe add a couple more wrinkles to the West Coast Hybrid offense - I’m sure Hackett picked up a few more things working under Gruden’s traditional Bill Walsh/Mike Holgren coaching tree West Coast Offense as well. Good overall lineage and good move especially if it’s just to mentor J.R. Having a back up plan with some continuity if/when Kiffin leaves is a good move as well. I certainly don’t want that old school KC style offense that was run, run, short pass, punt, but if Gannon trusts Hackett, that’s good enough for me, and as I recall KC hasn’t had a decent WR in 20 years and probably not a good QB/WR combo since Dawson and whoever his #1 guy was - the Jets sucked back then too with Vinny and Pennington (but each did have a couple good years), so I’ll give the guy a pass for now and be thankful that JR has an established “guru” as his QB coach.

  24. Scottish Raider Says:

Shame about Shane. I would have liked to see us make a run for Olivea. We are really weak at RT and he would have been a serious upgrade. Apparantly he has signed a one year with the Giants, subject to a medical.

Jedi, good point about DeFillipo. He is relatively inexperienced and it is a risk asking him to groom such a key talent as JR. He was the second choice, didn’t Kiff go after Tom Brady’s old mentor?

  25. Oakglenn Says:

Even tho Kansas City Star Reporter Jason Whitlock wanted Paul Hackett out, as most people know it is infinitely easier to fire coaches than to fire all the players. Coaches are easy scapegoats.

  26. Oakglenn Says:

DeFillipo is relatively inexperienced but has more NFL time than Tom Cable. So, experience may not be that important, as long as a couple of people game planning in the organization know the league.

See 909 you miss the entire point. Here is a guy who posts as others, rips the Raiders at every turn, posts racist crap, tries to tear this site down, and you agree with him. there is your answer right there. Why would anyone at the Bay Area News Paper Group do ANYTHING, WHEN you put up with the mess???? And CONDONE IT???????? And they know what’s going on. It’s up to YOU to stand up to this crap not agree with it.

    ……….

Oakglenn, as I’ve said before, they’ll ignore me when you do. Why do you tell everyone else to ignore me when it’s obvious you’re incapable of it?

Marley, question still on the table for you.

Which individual person is most at fault for how bad we’ve been over the past 5 years, and why?

  28. Rellik30 Says:

Brett always does great when Oakland is on the feild.

  29. Mistabrown Says:

Not only does OakGlenn fail to follow his own advice telling us to ignore you MR he has at least a half dozen different aliases..

Im not Marley but Al is the only common thread over last 5 years so he has no choice but to say AL.

  30. Mistabrown Says:

    Brett Favre - 1 SB
    Trent Dilfer - 1 SB
    Doug Wiliams - 1 SB
    Jeff Hostetler - 1 SB
    Brad Johnson - 1 SB

Yeah Brett is the GREATEST! If JR ever throws 29 int’s in a season he will get ran out of town. Favre does it and hes a hero.

  31. MR Says:

MistaBrown, Obviously Oakglenn isn’t fooling a soul in here with his hypocritical gripes about cloning screen names. He’s been called on it more than once, by several different people. My guess is Oakglenn is just a die hard fan looking to discourage critics from posting here, and is going with the old ‘any means necessary’, even if it means behaving in a way that he frequently complains to the mods bout when others do such. The way he sees it, it’s all a means to an end. The way the mods see it, however, is that Oakglenn is just one of the troublemakers. That’s why his complaints fall on deaf ears. I mean, his freakin’ IP is right there for them to see. I don’t know what he’s thinking. Again, I think he’s just a desperate die hard on a futile mission to control this place.

As far as my question to Marley, I just want to hear him say it. Honestly, I don’t think he’ll answer. His agenda here is to discredit Al’s critics, and he basically just talks small talk in the meantime to mesh in with the others. Look at what he talks about when he’s not fishing up old quotes and trying to bury people…players’ vertical jumps and bench presses, etc. I hate to give disingenuous snakes like him more credit than what they deserve, but at this point you really have to believe he’s employed with the team. In that regard, the joke’s on him. His team is 19-61 over the past 5 years. They ought to spend less time on blogs and more time scouting talent…

  32. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

This is no warning for Kiffin. He already knows how short his rope is. Hacket could work well with Kiffin.
In any event it has to be seen as an improvement.
Personally, I’d like to see the west coast offence and any variation of it dumped right off the west coast.

  35. The Old Guy Says:

We need to keep Cable, whatever it takes. Hes the main reason we had any success last year. We have to stop with the revolving door.We must become the ENVY of the NFL, once again. AAHH remember those glory days, 67-77 also 80-83, we could throw the Gruden era in there too, but it wasnt the same, dont get me wrong I loved all of it , but it wasnt same. Two things I hope for this season, first, I hope we can stop the fargin run. And second, I hope that JROCK is smarter than he sounds or looks, I hope he wins five superbowls for us, but he makes me nervous. It seems Hackett is comming in to tudor JM, which I think is a good thing.

  36. 408RAIDER Says:

Old guy hate to say it but it looks like Cable will be gone after this year especially if our running game dose better hell be that much more in demand.. and we all know AL dosent like to pay coaches

Man o man. I cannot wait for Al’s team to step on the field and wallop the dam doncs and the evil rat named scatashan.

  38. Johnny Rebel Says:

MR quit asking the same stupid question thats been answer time and time again. You buddy Allen, who started the veteran mess with Gruden is gone. your other buddy, Lombardi, who took over the roster after Allen, is responsible for the 5 years of worthless rebuilding he tried to establish by bringing in below average players. It is all specualation nobody can prove about Kiffin. Hackett is a Kiffin hire. More garbage just to get blog hits is all this post is. Knapp has not said he is going to leave next year, nor has Kiffin. If the Raiders were such an bad organization why are so many good players and coaches jumping on the bandwagon and coming to Oakland? A few months ago everyone in the media was saying nobody wanted to go to Oakland, coahces or players.

  39. Johnny Rebel Says:

Every coaches rope is short in the NFL if you don’t win.

  40. 408RAIDER Says:

  41. 408RAIDER Says:

  42. Johnny Rebel Says:

Jerry has a Q&A session with Gnapp, why not just ask him if he is going ot leave to end all the specualtion?

  43. Johnny Rebel Says:

If Al dosen’t pay coaches, why are there so many good ones in Oakland now?

  44. Andrews mom Says:

    #18 nice find Krock

Its looking better everyday. Raiders are on the way back to becoming the kind of team we want them to be.
    Lots of young, dynamic players.

  45. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Rebel…

true… with the roster we about to assemble, will it be hard to leave for Seattle… a team on its downfall… I think it would be a tough move, after the ‘09 draft our team would pretty much be assembled by these guys… when you finally got you own guys on each position its almost dumb to leave…

  46. Johnny Rebel Says:

Jerry does not want to discredit his media buddies is why he did not ask Gnapp the most important question. If the media says it, it must be true.

  47. Andrews mom Says:

I forgot to mention that it seems we have assembled a great coaching staff as well. I surmise that Hackett is going to a great influence on jammy.

  49. 408RAIDER Says:

we’ll see I hope you guys are right cuz I realy like what Cable has done for our Line… now I just want the to give Jamarcus some time on pass plays and we’ll be set… Go Raiders…

  50. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Rebel…

Jerry can ask all he want, a normal thinking guy in his last contract year never tells anybody where he thinks he’ll be next year… no matter what position, what sport if you are a coach or a player, you never tell you wishes when you in the final year, never… So thats why Jerry hasn’t asked Knapp or Cable… because Jerry, knows he will not get a straight answer, he rather use his few minutes on something related to this season…

ty, man, 547 games man. its afternoon here and the game starts in half and hour =)

  86. DeepBall Says:

I see LMN is still polluting the blog. I like the Hackett hire. Job security is not part of the landscape in the NFL. Hiring in competent coaching that integrates in with the overall coaching direction shouldn’t be a problem for self-assured people. If they win everybody gets to keep their job, if they lose most people are shown the door. If a defiency has been identified, smart management will try to fill that void and an intelligent head coach should welcome it. It was probably already part of the conversation anyway. I like the Lofton and the Hackett hire, the new strength coach, etc. This team is making an effort to improve in area that it can and I find that very encouraging. It’s not perfect, but I like a major majority of it’s moves so far.

  87. CopenhagenFan Says:

    Hey Nation.

They televised the Super Bowl from last year last night here in Copenhagen.

I remember there was a debate in here about how often the Giants actually blitzed during the course of the game, so I paid attention. Well, I have to admit that they did blitz quite a bit. A lot of zone blitzing, with G.Wilson actually blitzing 2 times in the first half alone.

Other than that, I tried to check Wilson out and he did virtually nothing in the game.

I know that he was the best safety on the free agent market, but is he good? He looked like Stu out there, never making any big hits, but just running up from the free safety position kind of off balance and not laying the wood on anybody.

  88. K-Rock Says:

Actually, Wilson had 3 solo tackles and 1 ast against Tampa, 4 solo and 6 ast against Dallas, 5 solo and 3 ast against Green Bay, and 3 solo and 2 ast against New England.

That is a total of 15 solo tackles and 12 assisted tackles, plus 3 passes defended in the 4 games of the playoffs.

But hey, don’t let facts stand in the way of your opinion.

  89. La Milicia Negra Says:

    papkasse…

  90. K-Rock Says:

Wilson also had 92 tackles on the season and 4 ints.

Wilson is entering his 5th season and should only get better. He has also been to the playoffs 3 of his 4 years in the league with a Super Bowl win. His experience and winning attitude will be huge for the Raiders Defense.

  91. K-Rock Says:

Wilson’s 284 solo tackles since entering the NFL in 2004 are the most of any safety during that span.

  92. La Milicia Negra Says:

    K-rock..

I agree with everything, but the last stat, I believe you, but I thought it was Sammy knight with most… but I guess its over the last 3 years, then…

I’ve was way ahead, after game 5 or 6 in 2007, I started to root for Gibril or GB’s Bigby to be our next safety =)

in fact much of the FA’s was I right about during the season, but the draft, that I screwed pretty much up =) Tommy Trojan, had that one nailed =)

  93. K-Rock Says:

That stat came from his bio on CBS Sports.com

  94. K-Rock Says:

SS Wilson enjoying Oakland so far: SS Gibril Wilson signed a $39 million, six-year contract with Oakland that included about $16 million in guaranteed money. The Raiders finalized the deal on the first day of the free agency period, showing the importance they placed on getting a safety who is physical to play close to the line of scrimmage to stop the run. Wilson’s 284 solo tackles since entering the NFL in 2004 are the most of any safety during that span. The San Jose native had 70 tackles and a career-high four interceptions in 13 games for the New York Giants last season. He and Michael Huff have each played both safety spots in practice so far, after Huff was primarily a strong safety his first two seasons. Huff appears more suited to free safety, where he doesn’t have to contend with blocks with 300-pound lineman. “I think me and Huff are going to complement each other very, very nicely,” Wilson said. “There’s not a play that we shouldn’t talk before the actual snap of the ball. Me and him, we need to be on the same page. We need to know what each other is thinking and disguising and everything and not giving away defenses and things like that. I think me and Huff will be great together.”

  95. Jim (ct raider) Says:

Wilson made a lot of tackles but he also had a defensive line that didn’t allow guards down field! it’s a lot easier tackling a rb coming through a hole with an arm already on him or… coming through only 1 hole…than it is trying to tackle a guy who is running full speed through his decided hole (choices!) with a guard in front of him.

  96. Jim (ct raider) Says:

adding sand bags to an over flowing river doesn’t work as well as reengineering the river. Hopefully our river is reengineered and now we have a better sand bag as well! hahahaa

  97. La Milicia Negra Says:

    K-rock…

    as I said i believe you…

  98. CopenhagenFan Says:

K Rock…My comments were based on what I saw in the one game. I didn’t bother to look up the stats. That’s why I posed the question here.

  99. Jim (ct raider) Says:

extra: there is no way in hell Russell, ready or not, is going to sit another year. That would be 1/3 of his contract gone and not starting. That would be 2 years of pay of a ridiculous salary and not contributing.. kind of like moss!@ hahahhahahahhaa

  100. Jim (ct raider) Says:

remember danny clark. he had great stats but it was the defensive coaches who mentioned the tackles were over rated because they were so far down field. We’ll see about Wilson on our team. The fact that he and huff are communicating so much tells you that our DBs are much smarter and that’s 90%. Now we just need to see how the other 50% works out (yogi berra paraphrase).

  101. C4 Says:

I bet Favre becomes a viking, if he does, look out for them. They are superbowl ready if they get a desent QB.

  102. La Milicia Negra Says:

    copenhagen…

yeah it seem he read what he wants to

  103. Bob Marley Says:

Hackett would be a good hire, he´s a bright guy and a great teacher, the Consultant role that´s been mentioned seems ideal for him.

A few more tidbits about Hackett´s latest jobs, it´s long but interesting, IMO.

Joining the Bucs as QB Coach:

    - “There isn’t much former Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett hasn’t seen in 16 NFL seasons. Now he will provide a new pair of eyes in the sky for Bucs coach Jon Gruden. Among Hackett duties will be to aid Gruden’s play calling by analyzing opposing defenses from the coaches box on game day.” Rick Strud, SP Times, 2005.

From Gruden: “We’re very excited, obviously, to add Paul Hackett, a guy that at least in my circles is the best quarterbacks coach in my lifetime”.

“Since he’s been with the Jets, there hasn’t been, I think, an offensive player drafted that didn’t make their team. And we’ve got to get some young offensive players to come in and make the damn team and develop and become players for us.”

“(Hackett’s) experience is unparalleled, in my opinion, dealing with quarterbacks….from young guys, like Carson Palmer, and the great cast of guys like Joe Montana in his early years with San Francisco. He certainly had a tremendous amount to do with Chad Pennington’s uprising in this league.”

    - There´s another current NFL Head Coach who served under Hackett early on at Pitt and then followed him to KC, GB´s Mike McCarthy:

“As Mike McCarthy continues his search for a new offensive coordinator, the most logical choice should he go outside the Green Bay Packers’ organization, remains Paul Hackett, his mentor in the West Coast offense.

Hackett, who specializes in handling quarterbacks, learned the West Coast offense from legendary coach Bill Walsh while serving as an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers from 1983-’85 and taught it to McCarthy.” Tom Silverstein, JS Online, 2007.

Said McCarthy: “Paul Hackett has been a major influence in my coaching career….I have the utmost respect and owe a lot to Paul Hackett because he’s the one that has taught me from Day One at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989 the basics of quarterback play and the foundation of the West Coast offense.”

    - Of course, any NYJ fan will tell you his play-calling was very conservative there, but he played to their strengths: Pennington managing the game with a variety of short throws while featuring the leading rusher and the fewest turnovers in the NFL in his last season as OC.

Pennington: “Some of the criticism you receive as a player and coach is mind-boggling” Pennington said. “In Coach Hackett’s instance, you have people criticizing him that may have a third-grade-level education as far as football is concerned, whereas he has his master’s degree. You can’t even talk on the same level as he is.”

“The man knows what he’s doing. I give him 100 percent of the credit as far as my development as the quarterback, learning how to use footwork to my advantage.

Obviously, I’m not a gunslinger as far as arm strength, and I have to have everything working in the right direction to help me complete footballs. And he’s been a big part of that.” NY Times, 2003.

  104. Mistabrown Says:

Green Bay should reinstate Favre and sit his ass on the bench for the entire year!

  105. La Milicia Negra Says:

but this goes back to the safety talk during last years season, I had three guys, Gibril Wilson, Sammy Knight and Bigby, bigby was not a FA, so i cut him out…

Some here argued that Sammy Knight was too slow and that he wasn’t good enough, I said he was a sure tackler and that still good, he ended the ‘07 with most tackles…

I agreed with those who said, that it was better way to secure the future with a young similar guy, that would be Gibril wilson… I think the Wilson hire is more important than the Hall deal…

Sammy Knight had during 04-07 278 solo and 89 assist.. So just to compare their stats, they are pretty close and when you consider Wilsons age, its a big upside… He will resurrect the fear of our back field…

  106. DEATHbyTATUM Says:

    CT,

NY’s D-line did not occupy blockers with double teams. Tuck, Strahan and Umi were all about getting upfield, quick…disrupting timing.

  107. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Bob Marley..

Nice quotes, this hire gives some credit to what Kiffin did during the ‘07. He wouldn’t had joined prior to the ‘07 season…

  108. La Milicia Negra Says:

and to end the sammy knight / gibril Wilson talk, Knight was hired to fill the void after Wilson left NYG…

  109. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

    Mistabrown,
If they sit him on the bench, it’s just big trouble for them. Disregarding the $12 mil for splinters, every time Rodgers touches the ball, he will get booed,
every mistake will be amplified. Better to just let him go.

  110. Oak Ridge Boy Reject Rob Ryan Says:

Hackett has ruined many programs, from USC to the Jets offense to KC. He will fit right in with the inept atmosphere Davis has allowed to fester.

  111. Johnny Rebel Says:

Kid Kiffin is drawing up plays for Mcfadden on the beach as we post. Don’t sound like he has many worries to me now that he started overhauling the roster with more talented players.

  112. Bob Marley Says:

As far as that old Super Bowl blitz debate, I hope this helps:

“The Giants’ pressure was crucial, as defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo estimated he called blitzes 30-35 percent of the time.

If Spagnuolo’s estimate is on the mark, that meant two out of every three plays were standard four-man rushes, an indication the Giants didn’t necessarily win because of scheme, but more because they won more individual matchups.” Boston Globe, Mike Reiss.

    - For comparison´s sake, here´s what the NYG did on their week 17th matchup:

“Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo blitzed quarterback Tom Brady on 19 of the 43 called pass plays or 44 percent of the time. But it didn’t work.

In the face of the Giants’ blitz, Brady was hit eight times, hurried numerous others and sacked once. But he completed 14 of 18 attempts for 174 yards and two touchdown passes” espn.com.

“Using that previous trip (week 17) into the NFL’s near-perfect storm to build his Super Bowl game plan, Spagnuolo used his defensive line’s knack for generating blitz-free pressure as a means to befuddle Brady and Bill Belichick.

“The Giants often used six defensive backs with Strahan and three of his D-line cronies. Of course, the Patriots O-line is a bit too formidable to attack without adjustments, so a few blitzes were mixed in.

“I don’t think it’s as many as people think,” Spagnuolo said of his blitz scheming. “Probably 30 or 35 percent”. foxsports.com Randy Hill.

    - Looks to me like both Mistabrown and Oakglenn were right to a certain degree, the NYG got to Brady with blitzes and with a 4 man rush, the mixing of both likely the key.

  113. Oak Ridge Boy Reject Rob Ryan Says:

Bob Marley, it wasnt a 4 man rush like the Davis defense. You can’t say that. The Giants did an excellent job of feigning blitzes and confusing the hell out of Brady. Davis defense is vanilla 4 man rush with man coverage, pretty similar to what the team has ran through the years.

  114. Bob Marley Says:

When did I say that?. I was referring exclusively to the NYG.

  115. 408RAIDER Says:

Freaking smoke everywhere this is lame…. I hope this new dude helps Jamarcus shine

  116. Johnny Rebel Says:

The Raiders defense could not blitz very much in recent years because of the safety position being manned by dummies like Shcweigert. The “tuck rule” was a result of the blitz so you can’t just push blame on the Davis myth. They used to blitz quite a bit when they had average safeties.

  117. Johnny Rebel Says:

And the Giants will be the first to tell you if it were not for a strong four man rush without having to blitz they would have lost the Superbowl. As the stats dictate above Brady was at his best when the Giants blitzed.

  118. robert gallery's mullet Says:

i notice the latest media photos of al davis…anyone notice that he is starting to look like chamberlain the defrocked skeksis from “the dark crystal”?

  119. Johnny Rebel Says:

Davis has become a Sith Lord.

  120. Johnny Rebel Says:

When you blitz on passing downs that means you have very little pass rush from the front four. It is just a coverup for another deficiency.

  121. Johnny Rebel Says:

I can see in the near future before they complete his life saving Vader suit, Davis will use unmanned drones on the practice field so he can tell that cornerback why he took the wrong angle.

  122. Bob Marley Says:

    MR….

I see you are changing the subject and running for cover (no surprise there).

But I will gladly answer your question.

I´ll do it once you answer this one:

You told us that: “Al Davis ordered Shell to ditch the run in the preseason and he never went back to it”.

But the facts could not be more clear:

    - The Raiders attempted more runs than passes in 3 of the first 6 games, on a fourth game, the runs and passes were even.

    - The Raiders ran for at least 137 yards in 3 of the first 6 games (194, 154 and 137).

    So here´s the question:

Were you just lying and making stuff up or do you just not know what you are talking about when it comes to the Raiders?….or both?.

  123. Jim (ct raider) Says:

Jacksonville figured out that you don’t blitz brady. YOu need to have pressure on the front 4. It would have worked for him but they had 2 lineman down. Jacksonville didn’t blitz AT ALL and Brady sat back there all day. It was the plan they went with because they knew blitzing would not work at all. again, unfortunately, they could not gain any pressure from their front 4 at all!!! BY the way, Grady Jackson was part of that front 4.

  124. Kyle Says:

i think this is more of a plan to replace Greg Knapp when he leaves for seattle in 2009. Kiffin will still be under contract then, but most of our offensive staff is going bye bye

  125. Johnny Rebel Says:

    Both.

  126. Johnny Rebel Says:

Mora will throw a fit and last maybe three years in Seattle.

  127. KoolKell Says:

Worst news of the day. My expectations are dropping by the week.

  128. RaiderKen Says:

I think blitzes are used when you don’t have great cover corners. They force the quarterback to make quick reads. We cover well so we don’t use the blitz and count on our D-line to get pressure and force a bad throw. Proof of this is the interception numbers of our LB corps.

  129. KoolKell Says:

Another dinking and dunking field goal kicking bore.

  130. CopenhagenFan Says:

Whatever the case is, we need to pressure the QB this year. “The QB must go down and go down hard”……

The Giants got in Brady’s face, punished him and he basically got spooked and even started throwing ducks when there was no real preasure. The more I see that game, the more brilliant the Giants seemed.

In reality, the Giants didn’t come close to matching up with the Patriots on paper. They just outplayed them with heart and intelligence.

The only guys on the Giants who were superior physically were the guys on the D-Line, and they were going up against an O-Line with 3 pro-bowlers.

The years where the Raiders were domiminant ALWAYS featured a D-line that dominated. Now our D-Line sucks and has sucked for a while.

  131. Johnny Rebel Says:

Hackett’s expertise is reading nfl defense, he is only there to help Russell, they did not hire him to coach.

  132. Johnny Rebel Says:

Thats b.s. the Giants almost be the Pat’s the last game of the year, they knew they could play with them.

  133. KoolKell Says:

It doesn’t make sense to me, why draft a JaMarcus Russell and design an offense to throw in front of the sticks?

  134. RF Says:

as long as those short horizontal plays get to Mcfadden, i dont think we’ll have a problem. good for russ. unless kiff/knapp/filippo/ and hackett have diff. philosophies and ways of doing things like with art shell and the oline.

  135. Johnny Rebel Says:

Another lie, where do you get your assumptions KoolKell? You must read the tabliods or something.

  136. CopenhagenFan Says:

Johnny…ok…make a list of all the players on both teams at each position and tell me the Giants are just as good on paper.

  137. RaiderKen Says:

    Can anyone say COACH LOFTON?

  138. KoolKell Says:

GotDamn RF it’s disappointing to hear you say that.

There is NO PASSING GAME WITHOUT WIDE RECIEVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  139. Johnny Rebel Says:

The Giants won, so whatever opinion you have on paper is obviously wrong.

  140. RaiderKen Says:

I think Miller will be Russell’s best friend with the RB trio coming in close second.

  141. Johnny Rebel Says:

I think Carter is going to be a solid option deep down th e sidelines or over the middle.

  142. KoolKell Says:

Balanced Offenses don’t just write-off pieces of the game they’re not good at.

In order to be good, you need to be good at the WHOLE F’N GAME.!!!!!!

My worst nightmare. I suspected as much when I heard Kiffin with that 65% completation rate sheit.

  143. RaiderKen Says:

We definately need to develope the offensive line in order to have solid options DEEP!

  144. RaiderKen Says:

Right now it looks like the only way we can go deep is with a solid running game that opens up the play action pass.

  145. Johnny Rebel Says:

They will have alot more options going deep with a moving pocket.

  146. KoolKell Says:

Al Davis drafts players that fit his eye, then turns them over to coaches who have a completely different agenda. Al either run Raider Football OR Let the coach draft his own players.

AL DAVIS ARE YOU A HORIZONTAL FOOTBALL GUY? SINCE WHEN?

    Mismanagement

  147. RaiderKen Says:

    JB
You mean a broken pocket and Russell running for his LIFE!

I am glad to see they are giving the selfish Favre the shaft.

  150. CopenhagenFan Says:

What a bunch of injudicious crap when my rather soft posts get banned while the moderators allow racistic bile, homofobic comments, and people switching identities to florish……very weak and very inconsistent!

  151. RaiderKen Says:

    KoolKell
Common Al wasn’t a West Coast guy, but he gave it a chance. Fact is he needs Russell to survive until the line can protect long enough to throw deep. Russell needs to learn to dump this season, cause the line ain’t gonna give him much time.

  152. KoolKell Says:

Deep Deep Deep, that’s all you morons can think of when you say wide receivers.

WR’s involved in the gameplan open up the middle for the TE.

Everything has to be in play and credible in order to make the defense respect the whole field.

Anybody ever hear of a 20 yard out?

  153. CopenhagenFan Says:

How silly that racism is more acceptable on this board than a few “off color” words …..

  154. CopenhagenFan Says:

That’s the true spirit of American values these days I guess

  155. Johnny Rebel Says:

Copenhagen you are a being banned by key words ,not a moderator as you see it. When your posts are totally removed after the post then you are being moderated. I have often thought the moderator is MR because all his vulgar posts are not removed.

  156. Johnny Rebel Says:

At least Kiffin does not have to compensate for Tim Brown’s piss poor blocking on run plays.

  157. RaiderKen Says:

    KoolKell
I’m not a moron, but you can’t open the middle of the field if the safeties don’t have the threat of a deep ball. When was the last time you saw our QB have enough time to throw 20 yard outs on a consistent basis.

  158. CopenhagenFan Says:

Kool the 20 yard out was the staple of Stabler and the boys….

  159. CopenhagenFan Says:

By the way…I just read that the Snake is taking a leave of absence from his gig with Bama…most likely to go to rehab after his last DUI…

  160. KoolKell Says:

Copenhagen try different spelling of a particular word or phrase.

  161. Johnny Rebel Says:

He is probably moving closer to florabama.

  162. CopenhagenFan Says:

Johnny…if Tim Brown is expected to be a lead blocker then a team is in big trouble ha ha

  163. KoolKell Says:

That’s true, RaiderKen. See? I can admit when I was wrong.

  164. KoolKell Says:

    Ken,

If you can’t play the game the way it’s meant to be played, then you shouldn’t be playing.

You can’t just surrender parts of the field, and expect to be respected by defenses

Look what a fine jobs Hacketts done in Tampa Bay. With that other horizontal idiot Jon Gruden.

  165. CopenhagenFan Says:

KOOL …nobody has respected our offense in years??! ha ha

  166. KoolKell Says:

Ok, ok, CopehnahenFan. I overstated my case. What can I say?

  167. Johnny Rebel Says:

At least you admit Gruden is an idiot.

  168. KoolKell Says:

I also butchered your name! Sorry about that, CopenhagenFan. The old fingers just ain’t what they used to be.

  169. az_ed Says:

What do you all think about the Packers saying Favre will be backup to Aaron Rogers? Personally I think the Packers should just take the high road and try to trade him and if they can’t release him. It is what it is, let him play out his final couple of years wherever and if he wins the big one, so be it. Making him a backup is a slap in the face to Favre and it puts extreme pressure on Aaron Rogers.
    Source: profootballtalk.com

  170. KoolKell Says:

If you can’t halfway decently pass protect, then you’d better get some F’N lineman who can!

You can’t just say “well we can’t pass protect” and go into the season with one hand tied behind your back.

    What a F’up Al.

  171. KoolKell Says:

I also admit that YOU’RE one — what of it?

  172. CopenhagenFan Says:

KOOL…I think you make a good point. We are not going to get anything done until we can get a defense to respect our ability to put fear into them and force them to shut down certain things that hurt them.

We bailed the idea of building our offensive line through the draft and drafter McFluffy…so maybe the plan is to work it short off of play action. Very horizontal and Gruden-ish …..or so it seems.

  173. KoolKell Says:

My little personal troll, Stool is determined not to let me speak for myself.

  174. Johnny Rebel Says:

Go back to your potty seat KoolKell.

  175. KoolKell Says:

I didn’t say that, though, Johnny Rebel. My troll did.

  176. Johnny Rebel Says:

What is it with Obama pissing off black people where ever he goes?

  177. CopenhagenFan Says:

KOOL yeah…Al went for an extra corner and RB instead of OL and DL!

  178. Johnny Rebel Says:

I know KoolKell, its MR under your name, but I have to respond to a name sometimes to keep the ball rolling if you know what I mean.

  179. KoolKell Says:

A little lazy on your part, though, don’t you think?

  180. KoolKell Says:

JERRY, SINCE YOURE BACK, THERE ARE TWO KOOLKELLS HERE RIGHT NOW, PLEASE GET RID OF ONE.

  181. RaiderKen Says:

    KoolKell
What I was trying to say is Hackett is short yardage, and that means that he has expertise in reading a Defense fast. Russell needs to learn all aspects of reading defenses, but this year I’m expecting he needs to read them fast. Point of this I feel a Offensive line needs three years to jell. I think we only have two real returners and those are at guard, so really we don’t even have one year yet. Gallery needs to get used to a new LT, and C. Same probably for Carlile. I just don’t see the protection being there. I look forward to a lot of Running and play action,or roll outs.

  182. Johnny Rebel Says:

Yeah I will admit to being lazy today, thats why I am on a blog.

  183. Johnny Rebel Says:

Why do you keep bring up Hackett’s offense, he is not a coach, get over it.

  184. KoolKell Says:

I’m busy right now, RaiderKen. I’m defending my name. That damn troll is really frosting me.

  185. RaiderKen Says:

    JB
I’m not bringing up his offense just his expertise and trying to suggest some logic as to why he is here.

KOOL you know you’ve made it big when people troll you

  187. La Milicia Negra Says:

  188. Coach on Wheels Says:

Deep, deep bs continues. The Raiders NEVER threw deep as much as the “verticle offense” ranters talk about. Stabler rarely had a pass play over 40 yards. A “verticle offense” will take a shot deep maybe 5-6 times a game. Kiffin took close to that many shots last year. This isn’t Madden. Throiwing deep every drive means lots of 3 and outs. Ask “hold it ’til they’re open” Art Shell about that.

Hackett is a good hire to be Kiffins OC next year. Hackett is a bad hire to be Lofton’s OC next year.
The fact that Al hasn’t locked up Cable proves he is still in the “coaches aren’t important” fantasy world.

Lofton was a good hire? An upgrade? Why? Remembering Jackie Slater and Art Shell were both great players, why is Lofton special as a coach? He was SD’s WR coach. A team known for not developing WR’s.

Kiffin-Gnapp and Cable have started rebuilding one of the worst teams in the league. Let them do their jobs and give them the time to do it.

  189. SMCGILL Says:

coach on wheels is right. Give them time to develope, I have to believe Kifflin has a big up side and yes is inexperienced but that will heal over time and he will only get better. Been a Raider fan since the Hidie game and that will never change. Just hope I get to be a happy fan again soon and not a fan in morning.

If Hackett is going to replace Knapp next season (or, God forbid, Kiffin), this is yet another step backward for the Raiders. Hackett’s offenses underachieve wherever he coaches. He’s the king of six-year passes on 3rd-and-12.

whats up oaktown, i like the move,if you keep it for what it is, its a quarterback coach. nothing more or less, not looking into it to much, if hes there this week its for jamarcus, and why should it be for anything more lane kiffen is our man, give him time to put things together, its evolving the raiders go eight and eight with wins over everyone in the afc west, ill take it, next year playoffs, than talk champions! the ol’man has one foot in the grave, its time to trust the youth of the organization. no more excuses, with revolving coaches! lets develop a team! run, run, run……play action , stuff over the middle with miller and curry, and let a young buck (lofton like) run the sidelines 3-5 times a game.no mistakes, no penalties, and no turnovers. we have a solid punter, lets keep our young team close in the fourth and give them an oppertunity.its exciting, the raiders will dominate in 3 years, if we develop our core youth, into legite men!

Not that I am an expert, but the Bucs, nor the Jets, nor KC seemed to have benefited much offensively, as far as I can see, from the coordination and tutelage of Hackett. I don’t really know him and am not qualified to add anything to the discussion regarding the hire. I just have never been impressed by any of his past team’s offensive achievements.

We can bring all the offensive coaches we want, but unfortunately our Raiders will be horrible this season… why? DEFENSE. We still have that idiot defensive coach Ryan. Never blitz and never scouts for real talent and makes horrible calls. We are going with Tardel Sands and Tommy Kelly who are the worst defensive lineman in the league. Kelly still can’t practice and he was horrible against the run last yr. Stats were revealed that the raiders were worst against the run when Kelly was in the starting lineup. We need two big fat run stoppers. Wasted money on these two idiots. We still won’t stop the run. Another wasted season. We can have all the offensive talent in the world, but the defense will kill us.

I am not feeling the Paul Hackett deal at all..just more signs the foundation still isn’t in place…7-9, at best..
