Don’t expect a deal for Nnamdi
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, July 14th, 2008 at 7:55 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Neither the agent for cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha nor the Raiders are interested in public discourse, but my understanding is that neither side is expecting a multi-year contract to be in place before Tuesday’s deadline for signing franchise free agents.
If Asomugha isn’t signed on Tuesday, he will play the 2008 season under his exclusive franchise free agent tender in the neighborhood of $9.7 million.
Steve Baker, the agent for Asomugha, declined comment. The Raiders, as a matter of policy, do not comment on contract negotiations.
Assuming Al Davis doesn’t come through with an offer to Asomugha’s liking before the deadline, the next issue is when the cornerback will sign his tender and report to training camp.
Asomugha could play the good soldier, sign it on July 23 when players report to the Napa Marriott and begin practice the next day, or he could hold off, making it clear he isn’t thrilled with the franchise tag, and miss all or part of the proceedings in Napa.
From what I’m hearing, Asomugha won’t be with the team when Napa opens, and it’s a tossup as to whether he reports before training camp comes to a close. But with nearly $10 million on the line, he is not going to miss any regular season games.
It will be a big story for awhile, but an overblown one. Asomugha is a corner. He could miss training camp, and as long as he remains in shape _ a pretty sure bet _ he can show up in late August and be just fine.

That kind od sucks…
The Raiders should lock up Aso with a matching deal to the one they gave Hall
July 14th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
We suck. We can’t stop the run. Just watched the ‘87 LA Raiders/Seahawks game. Saw a lot of resemblances between then and now. Our run defense today looks exactly like Seattle’s in that game. We make every back in the league today look like Bo Jackson. This is Oakglenn blogging for the Raider Nation on this balmy yet beautiful Monday evening, bitches.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
We won’t stop the run, with or without Aso. Maybe Al’s just smart enough to know that. He might as well save the money. Let him hold out. It won’t matter. We’ll have no defense this year, with or without Aso.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Aso isn’t going to settle for jack after what crazy Al gave Tommy Kelly. And he shouldn’t. It would be an insult if he did. Al Davis gave one of the worst defensive tackles in the league vs. the run the second largest DT contract, ever. Aso’s holding out till he gets twice as much. You can count on that. Don’t blame him. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. Ignore MR.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
why would he not come to training camp? doesn’t he like his teammates? doesn’t he want to get better? lame-o
July 14th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
This is a business. Like, hello? How do you show up to training camp when the worst run stopper in the game just got the second biggest contract for a D tackle ever, and you’re making f’n rookie wages? Aso should outright quit.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
whatever, franchise tag is a legit tactic. He’s making 10mil this year. i think he should show for 10 mil.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Not when Doormat Kelly is making what he’s making. Aso’s a man. He has pride. He’s not some little bitch.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
adahladafsdjafasdfa I don’t comment on contract negotiations. gladhafsldj got to keep my recipe for losing a top secret. ahadlajfessa fblah blah blah..where’s my walker…
July 14th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Ignore MR. No responses. Remember what I said, everyone. Don’t respond to him, and he’ll go away.
BTW, MR, what about when Marley schooled you on how many times Art Shell ran the ball? I don’t know how you have the balls to come back here after that. Marely Marely’d you. You don’t know anything. Yet you continue to come here and blog. REal fans are blogging here. You’re a homo and a 49er fan.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
MR admitted he’s gay, in post 10! I knew it all along. Anyhow, back to football. I don’t blame Aso for not signing. Not after the contract crazy Al gave to Kelly. No way. No dice, Gino.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Ignore him, guys. You know the drill.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
BTW, MR, tell us again how it was Gruden who wanted Gannon, when it was flat out proven that Al Davis wanted him? You’re not even worth responding to. You’re garbage. You’re scum. You’re the single most hated person on the planet. People hate you more than the terrorists. I know I do. You f’n queer.
July 14th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Just leave, MR! Get the F out of here! I’m not joking anymore. Everyone, I swear to god, do not respond to this clown ever again. If any of you ever respond to him again, I promise you I will put you on the same loser status that he’s on, and nobody will talk to you either. I’ve had enough of this. Agreed, SB666. But don’t respond to him. I’m serious. I’m getting this clown banned from every single Raider blog on the planet, so we can blog Raiders. Now stop responding to him. Let’s talk football. 13-3. Even though we can’t stop the run. We’ll score enough points. I believe.

Nhambdi is an average corner. I would not put him in Halls league. You only need one “shut down” corner. Hall is long term, just plug in the best available corner for the next few years, as I said, Nhambdi is a good guy, decent corner, not worthy of big bucks like Hall.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Pete this really borders on pyscho behaviour. It’s really sad for him actually. He needs serious help. To be on an internet site making a mess for hours a day is pychotic behaviour. Any doctor would concur.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
But remember, Pete, let me handle him. Don’t respond. I’m going to fix this peice of s’t for good. I’m calling Jerry tomorrow.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
That’s the problem - it’s not how much money these players take home, it’s how much the guy next to them is getting. If Nnamdi were making 50K per season, and Kelly just got a contract worth 100K, he’d be pissed. I totally get it. Yeah, if you take Kelly’s contract (or Hall’s) out of the equation, then hell yes Nnamdi should report to camp for a fat $10 million… but Kelly and Hall are making more than Nnamdi and he deserves more. Yes, you can say Hall has more cred (Pro Bowler), but the Raiders are expecting Nnamdi, not Hall, to cover the opposing D’s #1 guy, not Hall. Nnamdi needs to get compensated, fully… and now.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
But I agree with Aso, though. Kelly is a joke. A typical Al Davis blunder. And he’s paid like a King. That’s why Aso’s holding out. I don’t blame him.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Kelly is no joke. I would pay kelly much more then Nhambdi. Kelly will be a top D lineman for years. The cash he got this year will be dwarfed by deals for D lineman next year. You think Kelly is overpaid?,…they all are overpaid.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Kelly makes every running back he’s made contact with look like Bo Jackson.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
I can’t blame ASO one bit. At the same time he has only had one good year
July 14th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
MR, You’re STILL in here dancing! Good monkey. Dance monkey, dance. Don’t bother responding.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

of on the guy 100 yard recievers against him last year I Dont have the stats but was there even 1 ? back to stopping the run I agree
with oak we are going to put up points

July 14th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Pro football has a problem. The Raiders are not the only place it shows up. We just know about it because we pay attention. It used to be about “The Team”, now it seems it about the money. Look at the Patriots, if they were not winning, the talent positions would ask for more Money to stay. So when a team is not winning it’s difficult to get top quality players to stay, you have to pay them big bucks. And around it goes. That’s why it takes so long, or never happens (see Buffalo Bills) to start winning football games.
July 14th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Dr Ice,…Nhambdi is average,…he was at Cal and he is as a pro corner,..I like him enough,..wouldnt give him a big deal though….not a Hall deal,..I wish Charles Woodson would return to pair with Hall,…those two are primo corners,..Nhambdi is average at best.
July 14th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Nhambi is twice the corner Hall is. If the acquisition of Hall causes Nhambi to walk after the season why did Al do the deal?
July 14th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Man cant wait to see Bush in preseason n laugh but would like to see jeff george in 4 a try to backup hell he can throw a pass n Andrew isnt staying so get a pick n that a vet with a big arm stand next to kiff.

Arron Brooks is my pool man so technically he is employed.
July 14th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Aaron Brooks is still sitting on the money that Raider fans put into his pocket. You, more likely, are a pool man. And, I’ll bet you wanted to use the word “pool boy”, but wisely decided against it. I’ll bet you.
July 14th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
The NFL is fixed. No competition. It’s all a waste of time. The whole concept of sport in the western world is eroding with its civilization. As money corrupts government, it corrupts sport, as well. And at the same, parallel pace. The integrity of professional sports in America will always mirror the integrity of the American government. You will find the exact same thing going on in both places. If you don’t believe so, you’re a f’n idiot. Goodnight. I’m calling Jerry tomorrow and having all of you banned.
July 15th, 2008 at 12:59 am
Good article on the pro’s and con’s of Favre, Jerry.
It’s going to be disapointing if Aso doesn’t show up for the first mandatory mini-camp. He would unfortunately be following down Woodson’s path back in ‘98. Let’s hope that Aso will choose to be the bigger man. After all, he’ll make $10 million in the year and still have a year to negotiate. Burgess has a bigger complaint, although he also has a contract-and a great attitude with it.
July 15th, 2008 at 1:05 am
Whoops, an error there. It’s what happens when you type faster than you think.
July 15th, 2008 at 1:09 am

July 15th, 2008 at 1:56 am
You know this is exactly what I was afraid of. I had a feeling that when we made all of these big signings with other free agents first that someone on our team would get screwed over. Its very unfortunate that it had to be Asomugha. Although I was in favor of bringing on Hall, I thought they should’ve taken care of Asomugha before anyone else, including Kelly. Aso has shown to be the most proven player on the field as well as off the field only to be deprioritized for players with red flags. This is why the good players always end up leaving the Raiders to go thrive elsewhere. This is why we lose players like Marcus Allen, this is why Tim Brown almost became a Denver Bronco. We give out mega contracts to outsiders who look good and ignore our own players who ARE good. We bring in Superstars who’s on the downside of thier career instead of developing our own players into superstars. I hate to say this but I wouldnt blame Asomugha if he did leave the Raiders come next year. I wonder who will be next to get screwed. My guess is captain Kirk Morrison. I really hope Im wrong on this and they do work out a contract for Asomugha. We’ll see. YA KNOW?!

Deangelo Hall is the man!!(4.13 40 yard dash) Nnamdi should get his long term contract with the raiders, he deserves it, and we will stop the pass forever, then next year we will make trades, and draft to stop the run, and win the super bowl!!
July 15th, 2008 at 2:21 am
come on….ASO is getting 10 mil. He should be able to live with that. Show up to camp and play ball.
Having Hall at the other corner is only a bonus for ASO as maybe somebody will throw the ball in his direction then he can get some picks and ask for mo’ money again and again……..
July 15th, 2008 at 2:25 am
Please sign Nnamdi to a long term contract, Please Al. We need him bad. If we sign him then they will go to the other side and Deangelo Hall will pick it off for a touchdown everytime, then we will have the off.scoring and the Def. scoring, and what team is going to keep up with that high scoring powered off. and high powered scoring DEF.!! WOW never thought about that huh! Come on AL.
July 15th, 2008 at 2:25 am
yo rick ..; i feel u on that … and i hate to say it but u know who is to blame for that?? he needs to hand down the thrown… his time has come and gone already…. were not gonna get any recognition as a team until we get reorganized… im stationed in san diego.. i go to the raider bar there… every week with the bad luck we have every week… these fans r still dedicated!!! no matter what>???
July 15th, 2008 at 2:29 am
hey folks .. i got A j russ jersey hre in korea for only 30$ .. they also have throwbacks .. bo and allen for the same price…. what a steal!!!!!
July 15th, 2008 at 2:52 am
If you got a throw back in Korea, more than likely, its a ripoff. But congratulations on a steal!!!
back to Asomugha. Rewind back to 05 when C.Wood signed the one year tender and bolted to the Pack. Probably same thing with Aso (likely destinations; Minnesota or the N.Y. Jets in 09.) If they were smart they’d make a deal with Jason Taylor, because Burgess is likely gone next year, too.
As for the run defense. I agree, Why they took Arman Shields and not DT Dre Moore in the draft is mystifying. Especially since there were a lot of vets that would sign for the minimum; Eric Moulds,Peerless Price just to name a couple.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:36 am
I agree he will be satisfied with 10mil but thats very stupid on the Raiders part because thats throwing away money. I thought they learned thier lesson after going through this a few years ago with Charles Woodson. Why pay a base salary of 10mil if you can pay 7-8mil and use the other few million to get a few solid role players. I dont know,, maybe its just me thinking too logically.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:53 am
This is the problem I have with AL Davis. He preaches loyalty, respect, honor and tradition. But when it comes to him living up to those standards, he doesn’t come close. First, let me start by saying I am 36 yrs old and I have been a raider fan ever since I was 3 years old. This old piece of sh^t don’t get it. If we are going to move forward, then he has to do what’s best for this and that’s signing our best players and getting rid of the trash. Doesn’t make much since to me that we are holding on to Jordan hoping some team will give us some type of compensation. Bullsh^t!!!!!!!! We should have lock up Nnamdi a long time ago. Matter of fact, He should have gotten his contract done before we traded for Hall. I know if we can trade jordan we will save the full 4.7 million, and if we don’t we only save a portion of that b/c of the june 1st date. None of that has anything to do with the fact we need to take care of Nnamdi or trading for Hall really doesn’t make much since. Old man get your head out of your aZ
July 15th, 2008 at 3:59 am
agree with the comments about loyalty / respect when it comes to this guy - aso’s been one of the best raiders we’ve had over the past few years. if anyone deserved a longterm deal early it was him - not kelly/walker/etc… Wishing we’d have locked him up early long-term and then dealt with the rest afterward. I’m hoping that the raiders aren’t thinking he’s disposable now that Hall is on the payroll.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:44 am
Time for your good morning Raiders interruption.
Its a great day!
Traing camp starts real soon.
We are gonna have a great year!!!
I am done and off to work to brag to everyone about how this will be the Raiders year,
Sorry about the interuption. You may now carry on with bitching, moaning, whining and trolling.
Thank you for your time
July 15th, 2008 at 5:10 am
This will be the first season Aso will be really tested. No one knows how good he is or is he that good.
I think the Raiders are doing the right thing. He will earn his contract this with Hall at the other corner. He will see plenty of passes on his side. The Raiders knew what they were doing by signing him. If he is as good as everyone says he is, then he will get paid. We all know the position Al celebrates more then any other is cornerback. Every superbowl the Raiders have won they had good c/b’s. Al is not cheap, if anything he over pays.

Yeah there’s alot of bitching and complaining going on but with justifiable cause. Over the past 6 yrs we’ve had nothing to be happy about other than having high draft picks and we havent exactly made a big splash in the draft pool either. I dont wanna sound too sexist but its kinda like having a beautiful woman who cooks terrible meals and is terrible in bed. The Raiders always look good but they’ve been terrible in the kitchen (off-season) and lame in bed (playing field). When they start putting some good food on the table, and learn how to be a nasty freak on the football field then the complaining will stop and you’ll have some happy and faithful fans. Any fellas out there know what Im talking about?
July 15th, 2008 at 5:53 am
Funny post RICK. Yeah we should have taken care of ASO. Almost everyone in the league (coaches, scouts, and players) but him in the top 3 corners. HOpefully we are going to be better this year so we won’t have to spend 5-8 million on our first pick so that will free up some cash. I think if we have a decent year Aso will come back hoping to win a championship here in Oakland. He is a Cal guy and does tremendous work in the community. If we suck he may want to bolt though and get his long term deal.

[...] looks like Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha will play out the season under his franchise [...]
July 15th, 2008 at 6:07 am
My employer should be so disloyal as to pay me a Franchise tag. I hope NA gets a long term deal but let’s not forget his the Raiders waited 4 season to get a return on this guy. DeAngelo Hall money would seem fair.
In general the teams policy of not resigning guys until their deal is over is too shortsighted. Kelly and Namdi were identified as key guys prior to 2007. Had they been extended timely, we would not have been balls to the wall.
I’d like to see us extend Burgess and Morrision in the next off season prior to the 2010 walk year
July 15th, 2008 at 6:20 am
True Diceq, he didn’t do crap his first few years and they thought about moving him to safety, he also couldn’t catch a cold. We were roundly derided for drafting him in the first round.
But he has played at an extremely high level for 2 years and just turned 27 years old a few days ago, he deserves his money. With Hall @ 24 & Huff @ 25 this d-backfield could remain intact and playing at a high level for 4-5 years if we play our cards right. Can you imagine what an advantage that could be having the consistency and communication with guys you have played 3-4 years with. I wish we could avoid the headache and just get him locked up today but that is prob not going to happen.
July 15th, 2008 at 6:39 am
Nnamdi is one of the best corners in the league. He was thrown to about 26 times in 16 games. That is Deion status. By comparison, Champ Bailey (who I think is tremendously overrated) had two touchdown games against him and was gettin worked. He tackles well and reads screens on his side. Someone said he hasn’t been tested, huh? The year before last he was and got eight picks (three to the house). With Hall, it is pick your poison - so he will have more chances to intercept. He is not an average corner - Jay Cutler, when the donkeys came to town was asked would he challenge ASO - and flatly said “No. He’s to good”.
July 15th, 2008 at 6:41 am
Jerry, what about the long term? If Nnamdi plays this season with the franchise tag, then what? Can the team franchise him again next year — or is there some danger of losing him? We can’t lose this guy.
July 15th, 2008 at 6:44 am
Jerry,
Given that Nnamdi Asomugha is not just a CB, but a RIGHT CB, it’s easier to sit out camp because he ends up in single coverage more often than not. HOWEVER, the fact is that we have a new SS and, effectively, a new FS. It takes a bit of time working together to know how the other guys in your unit play. If Nnamdi sits out, guaranteed he will get beat deep once or twice because he thinks he’ll have help over the top, but doesn’t. Listen to what Gibril Wilson is saying about communication between him and Huff — don’t you think that will affect the CBs? It’ll have some effect on Howard and the RDE, too, as they will be counting on the right CB to be there in run support and assist in outside contain on running plays.
As others have pointed out, this has to have something to do with the money paid to Kelly, Hall (and even Walker). Nnamdi has missed no time to injury (in any meaningful sense), and has been here for Norv, Shell and now Kiffin — something only the oft-injured Tommy Kelly can say. Nnamdi deserves a little in the way of respect, and sadly contract money is one of the very few ways to do that in modern sports.
Sure, he’ll be in camp, as you say, for 9.7 million reasons/dollars. Better he be there sooner than later.
It’s be nice to know what this wasn’t done very early on.
Peace.
July 15th, 2008 at 6:50 am
Get your own blog dude.
10million IS rookie scale. WTF are you talking about.
A BITCH would wine about the situation, a MAN would take it as it is.
July 15th, 2008 at 6:50 am
Oh, and Woodson was way overrated. He is the king of “almost making a play”. When he was here, he was thrown to at clutch times and the other team usually came up with the big play. He held Randy Moss to one reception in Minnesota, did well against Owens, but got torched by “Snoop” Minnis and a host of other lesser recievers. In (I think) his tenth season, he still falls for the double move because he doesn’t watch film. If you go back to when Tory James was here, Woodson was our second best corner.

Before everyone jumps on the blame game over Aso just remember he knows full well there could be a capless season in the near future. If he is as good as everyone (including him) thinks he is, then he should have no problem producing another good season and get franchised again next year to land an even bigger deal while waiting to see if a capless year will become a reality.
July 15th, 2008 at 6:57 am
Tommy Kelly is good, he will prove it this year, he has yet to play his natural position in the NFL, and is acually widely considered to be a good player, Bellicheck in NE was ready to hand him a contract too if the Raiders let him go, He will be fine this year.
Aso needs a long term deal, there is no reason why he shouldn’t get one, he was only thrown at 38 times last year and only allowed 14 completions, that is amazing, that mean QB’s only attempted to throw at him 2 times per game, on average of 50 plays per team thats only once every 25 plays, and half of them were not completed, Give him his money and get rid of Lamont Burgess Sam WIlliams Robert Thomas and Gerrad Warren, and fork that money to ASO, Warren and Lamont alone is 10 million in cap space, add that with the franchise tender and we could give ASO his deal and make about 12 million this year, It needs to get done, Al loves his CB’s and he will keep this tandem together.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:01 am
And for 2 years he has been the best corner in a lousy secondary so the Hall signing puts the pressure on Aso to produce because teams will be forced to throw his way more often. Before you knock Hall at least he has made 2 probowls in his first 4 years on another lousy defenseive unit.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:04 am
I dont see future in T Kelly, I dont see future in tardell sands, I see future in Namndi, Hall, Huff and Wilson. Please Al sign Namdi, do your homework.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Warren won’t get beat out in camp and he won’t be released. When he played last year he was the best defensive tackle the Raiders had. Warren is a machine at collapsing the pocket when he plays and every player has injury issues.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:08 am
The Raiders are going to use Kelly like the Giants used Tuck last year, moving him inside. They won’t be disappointed either, Kelly has a mind set like a pit bull.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:10 am
Sands only signed a three year deal if I remember correctly but he is probably on the bubble after last year anyway.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:18 am
Long has still not signed and he was the perceived golden boy by the media that would sign the earliest of the top 5 picks.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:23 am
HERE’S THE BOTTOM LINE:
THE FRANCHISE TAG FOR CB’S IS A 2 YEAR COMMITMENT!
THE REASON BEING….
NNAMDI WILL PLAY 2008 MAKING JUST UNDER $10 MIL. IF/WHEN OAKLAND FRANCHISE TAGS HIM AGAIN THE FOLLOWING SEASON (2009) HE’S GUARANTEED A 20% INCREASE. THEREFORE HIS 2009 SALARY WILL BE JUST UNDER $12 MIL….AND THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEMS START.
RIGHT NOW NNAMDI IS LOOKING FOR A MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT WITH A SIGNING BONUS IN THE $25 MIL RANGE. TO FRANCHISE TAG HIM A THIRD YEAR (2010 SEASON) BIG AL WILL BE ON THE HOOK FOR APPROXIMATELY $15 MIL (FOR ONLY THE ONE SEASON). AT THIS POINT THE GUARANTEED FRANCHISE TENDER IS SO HIGH, IT’S IN THE PLAYERS BEST INTEREST TO GET TAGGED UNTIL HIS ORIGINAL TEAM CAN NO LONGER AFFORD IT. THEN EVENTUALLY HIT THE OPEN MARKET AND GET A HUGE SIGNING BONUS FROM ANOTHER CLUB.
THIS IS THE EXACT ROUTE CHARLES WOODSON TOOK AND OAKLAND PAID HIM MORE MONEY BY FRANCHISING HIM FOR 2 YEARS THEN IT WOULD’VE COST TO SIGN HIM TO A LON-TERM DEAL FROM THE START. THE FRANCHISE TAG IS TRULY A SHORT TERM SOLUTION!
IN ADDITION TO THE FINANCIAL RAMIFICATIONS WE’RE GOING TO READ ABOUT NNAMDI NOT COMING TO OTA’S, MINI CAMPS, TRAINING CAMP, ETC ETC ETC FOR THE NEXT 2 YEARS. AND WE ALL KNOW THE MEDIA LOVES MAKING OAKLAND LOOK LIKE FOOLS EVERY CHANCE IT GETS.
I HOPE THIS DEAL GETS DONE TODAY! IF NOT GET READY TO WATCH NNAMDI’S FINAL 32 GAMES IN SILVER AND BLACK.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:29 am
PS:
PLEASE SIGN GRADY JACKSON!!!!!!!!
THE FIRST DT INJURY WE HAVE, OUR D-LINE DEPTH WILL BE EXPOSED. GRADY WILL BE A PERFECT FIT TO HELP CLOG THE MIDDLE.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:39 am
True indeed (post 87). I dont see what others see, but Gerard Warren played extremely well in the middle. Tommy Kelly is not a bad player and is a tremendous upgrade over Warren Sapp as far as run stopping goes. As a pass rusher, there is only one Sapp. The team will stop the run better (we have to) and when Huff gets his reads down will be crazy against the pass. We have been so down optimism seems crazy, but this will be one of the great Raider defenses in time. Too quick? Think of it this way; 2002 the Raiders went to the Super Bowl, 2003 4 wins. Great O-Line in 2002, horrible 2003. Schemes mean a lot, and Kiffen has put together a winner. A coaches job is to put the team in a position to win - in most every game last year we were in that position.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:45 am
If there is any player we MUST resign, this would be be the one. Nnamdi is the best player on our team and the best player at his position in the NFL. He may be the only CB in the NFL who is worthy of an $80-100 million contract.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:53 am
Grady has a bum shoulder and is no lock to stay healthy either.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:58 am
Here are some tidbits about Paul Hackett Jerry forgot to tell us about: He was quarterback coach in SF for Joe Montana, when he was offensive coordinator for Marty ball in KC from 93-97 they went to the AFC Championship game, combined record for those years was 42-24, they went 9-1 verus the Raiders.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:01 am
It’s so funny, Jerry Mac is so informative, yet some of you fans who post here are so uninformed.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:02 am
Thats true CT his salary is huge but no signing bonus, if ASO comes in and shreds his knee and gets put on IR for the year that is not guarenteed money. I am not sure how much he gets but not the 9+ mil. Thats the disadvantage to playing under the tag. But he will be fine under the tag this year and we still get a shot to lock him up during the season. Hopefully we plan to do that when our cap for this year finally shakes out w/ Lamont etc.
I agree on the G. Jackson situation, he can still be a solid rotational player.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:05 am
The Raiders are handling the Aso situation EXACTLY like the Patriots handled Assante Samuels.
Aso is a great player but he’s only had two good years on two of the worst Raider teams in history.
If he wants a big time contract, he’s going to have to play BIG TIME.
It’s called motivation.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:14 am
SC Raider:
Each year that franchise amount is 100% guaranteed. Therefore, when he signs that $9.7 mil tender, that is his money regardless (as long as he shows-up).
Now the advantage for the raiders is if he does blow out his knee (and they decide not to resign him), he is completely off the books the following season.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:15 am
I read somewhere Aso could stand to make in the neighborhood of 10-20% more if he waits till August to negotiate a long term deal.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Pay the man already, get it over and done with. Why pay unproven players millions of dollars when you already have a proven player with your team already? Duhhhhhhhhhhhh…….
July 15th, 2008 at 8:19 am
Why do you assume Aso wants to sign right now?
July 15th, 2008 at 8:23 am
I did not know that CT. I assumed the tag was like other NFL salaries, prorated over the 16 game season. Well good for Aso, if anyone on this team deserves big $ its him. Al is prob thinking w/ our improved secondary that Aso will get thrown on more this year and they can sign him at a slightly reduced rate.
Thats why I can’t really get pissed at NFL players when they hold out. They are not living up to their contract but teams cut players all the time for declining performance. Case in point L. Jordan won’t sniff his $5 mil this year,at least not from us anyway. But in NBA and MLB every cent of the contract is guarenteed.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:23 am
Nnamdi is overrated anyway. Let him walk. There’s plenty of guys who can play his position.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:24 am
I would be surprised if Aso didn’t show for camp…not to mention, disgusted. 9+ mil, you go to work, period.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:27 am
As I noted yesterday, my fear is that Aso doesn’t want to be a Raider for any longer than necessary. Many of you feel that Al should just give him the big money, but a contract is a two-way street. Perhaps Al has already put a monster contract out there and Aso said “no thanks, I’ll take the 20+ mil and seeya after 2009″.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Trade Aso for Farve!
July 15th, 2008 at 8:30 am
Favre won’t beat out Russell so he won’t agree to a trade here.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Re: 109
Farve is a Danish word meaning “color”.
Favre is a QB in the NFL.
I just call him SwampCheese.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Not to mention Farve wants to play for a CONTENDER.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Favre wants to start for anybody that will have him.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Terdell Sands will be starting over Warren this year, The dudes mother and another immediatly family member died alittle bit before the season, His head wasnt in the game last year, which to me is understandable, he will return to his 2006 form when he got that 3 year contract.
Tommy Kelly is leaps and bounds above Sapp in Run support. He also isnt bad at rushing the passer, Warren is a UT in a NT’s body, He is not a run stuffing DT, We need Terdell to be the NT, and he will be, Warren will be on the bench and rotate in on passing downs and to get Terdell some breathes.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:47 am
Johnny how long have you been watching football?
July 15th, 2008 at 8:49 am
The real issue is not who else got paid what on a team. The issue is what is the market salary for a corner of Nnamdi’s calber. Nnamdi is probably being slightly overpaid per year as a franchised guy. The second issue is the guaranteed money over the long term paid as bonus money. This is where the the issue will be decided. I would like to see them lock-up Nnamdi for the next 7 years and pair him with Hall. Corner play is the cornerstone of Raider defensive philosphy. But at what market cost? Remember the Charles Woodson situation? Was he ever worth the franchise money paid to him?
July 15th, 2008 at 8:51 am
there is no way that Farve play’s for the Raiders.. NO WAY!!
I’m not going to wait to see Russell and nether is any body else!!
Aso will play and will probebly in for camp, not all of camp but some of it. He will not let Hall get all of the spotlight. Aso will play …
July 15th, 2008 at 8:55 am
Hugh, Russell will probebly be a turn over machine this year.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:02 am
MR
Most if not all qb’s are, but I think with the system on offence, we will be in the top of the league in rushing and that will help Russell, kiffin is dead set on not letting that happen. Now do I believe that? Of course “I am a Raiders fan” and every year I believe we will be the best… I have to !!!!
July 15th, 2008 at 9:05 am
We drafted him. We taught him. We had patience w/him. Now hes a all pro, and we dont want to pay him. Pay him,cuz if we dont, some other team will, and then they will get to reap the rewards that the raiders sowed. Plus, can we have a little imagination, aso and hall, on the same team for 4or 5 years, thats nice.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Al davis and the rest of the suits up there in raiderville need to get their fingers out of their butts and sign nnamdi to a freaking deal because he deserves it now why in the world would you do the person that have done nothing but bled raider blood for you since he was drafted to get to where he is now is beyond me. While I do like d hall. Nnamdi has paid his dues as a raider and deserves better. Its like working in a place of business and you’ve been there for years and have established yourself and they bring in someone else pay them more money and totally is oblivious to what you contributed to the company……he neeeds to be given a deal. I say the same for burgess because he’s been a sport about it and he did come to oakland and backed it up big time, people actually feared at least one of our d-lineman and it was him. Not sap or any one else that we’ve had in a while so davis please man don’t let our boy nnamdi walk!!!!!! Show some loyalty to your players
July 15th, 2008 at 9:06 am
I don’t see why so many people get on MR’s ass, I think he’s funny. Anyways, Favre couldn’t beat out Russell, what have you been smoking?
July 15th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Nnamdi will be signed after this season and i will tell you why. A) Yhe Raiders want to see how well Hall and Nnamdi work together. B) Most Important - they want to see how much cash flow they will need to restructure their defense if they play terrible this year.
I am banking on the teams success. I think Nnamdi deserves a good deal. To me he is a no brainer with his on and off the field professionalism.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:13 am
post 120, right on the mark
July 15th, 2008 at 9:23 am
For once Al Davis is actually doing the right thing, the way he’s handling this Nnamdi ’situation’. If Nnamdi gets all bent out of shape about it, tough! He ain’t that good, man. Cornerback is probably the easiest position to fill, so if he and his agent want to play hardball, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, fellas.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:27 am
If anyone saw that Seachicken vs Raiders game last night you should be getting really excited about this upcoming season. Watching Bo&Marcus lineup in the same backfield 85% of the time - just all over the damn place. In Pro sets, weakside, strongside formations, lined up at WR - they were all over the place. And Bombs were flying that game …at least 2-3 per quarter.
Lo-and-behold, reports coming out of minicamp of MBush and DMC lining up at WR while the other is at HB, etc in the same plays. This offense should be exciting and just tough as nails to defend.
87′ skill positions: QB-Wilson, RB1-2-Jackson, RB1-2-Allen, WR1-Lofton, TE-Christiansen (sp?)
08′ skill positions: QB-Russell, RB1-2-Bush, RB1-2-McFadden, WR1-Walker, TE-Miller
The QB makes a HUGE difference!!
(Fargus is not forgotten)
July 15th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Pretty funny, Terrapin. Maybe we can get Marc Wilson to come out of retirement. LOL.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Terrapin, maybe you should send Kiffin a copy of that game so he can add those plays to the playbook.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:51 am
Cornerback is one of the hardest positions to fill in football and especially with the type of defense that we play. It is the most difficult position to play and excell at behind QB. We haven’t had a good tandem since Woodson/James, and haven’t had a great one since Allen/Woodson. Nnamdi should get what he wants. Hall and Nnamdi aren’t even in the same class; because whatever you say about Hall, he is our number two corner.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Hey Terrapin,I was thinking the same thing last night but, wasnt it fun to watch Rod Martin,Stacy Toran, Big Matt Millen,Greg Townsend, and of course, Howie all taking care of business. To tell you the truth, watching Howie getting doubled and even tripled teamed, last night, got me a little emotional. He was beast!
July 15th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Wow… Insightful and well reasoned discussion, about our beloved RAIDERS. How refreshing!!!
July 15th, 2008 at 9:54 am
What? Hall number two? I don’t think so. That cat can run rings around Nnamdi. That’s probably why Nnamdi is dragging his feet — he knows he’s going to get shown up so bad.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Yeah Old man …that defense was Physical - Thats how you are suppose to play defense. They were poppin’ seachicken heads left and right. This defense we have now? Too finese. Hopefully Wilson, Hall (and maybe Hartwell) can change that.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:08 am
Actually Terp, you bring up a great point. The Raiders are not physical on EITHER side of the ball. The last physical Raiders Offense was the 2002 AFC Championship team.
Last year against a very physical Joke-sonville team we all saw what happened.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:10 am
KoolKell, my brotha!
July 15th, 2008 at 10:10 am
You have to look at this situation from Nnamdi´s financial prospects.
If he doesn´t sign a long term deal, he´ll play for us the following 2 seasons and make over 20 million dollars, 9.75 in 08 and around 11 in 09.
After that, he´s an Unrestricted Free Agent available to the best suitor for the 2010 season.
What´s the big deal you say?. The 2010 season will likely be the year without a Cap.
Every team in need of a top-flight CB can go after Nnamdi without having to worry about the financial restrictions of “fitting” his contract under the Cap.
So, by not signing a long term deal Nnamdi could be looking at a guaranteed 20 million plus payday from the Raiders in 08 and 09 and then, in 2010, a huge contract from the highest bidder.
DeAngelo Hall signed for about 25 million guaranteed, Nnamdi will make 20 the next 2 seasons alone and will likely get a new contract with about 35-40 million in guarantees by 2010, he could secure a payday of about 50 to 60 million over the next 5-6 years.
The way things have been set up for Nnamdi he could make more money than any other Defensive player in the league over the next few seasons, at least more than any other CB.
That kind of money dwarfs anything we could offer him in a long term deal. Of course, playing that game carries some risk for Nnamdi, he can get injured and watch his value diminish greatly, but it has to be a big temptation for Nnamdi and of course, his Agents.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:12 am
MAN THIS CAPS THING IS HARD TO KILL! HUH?
DON’T BOTHER RESPONDING….
July 15th, 2008 at 10:15 am
I think it will be good for Nhamdi to play franchised this year. Teams are going to have to test him this year…he is in for a big pro-bowl year.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:17 am
though I know I’ll get some bashing for this, I will just remind you all, that it is, Fargas and Nnamdi…
July 15th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Bob…
Al could be that guy… I mean the guy who is the highest bidder….
July 15th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Jerry,
Im not sure I completely agree that Nandi doesnt need to show up to Camp because he is a corner. There are a lot of new pieces in that secondary and they need to build cohesion as a group.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:24 am
On physical D…
I am, looking forward to see what Wilson brings to the table. And to see him busting some BIG hits, on the opposition. Keep their heads on a swivel, hearing footsteps and growing some gator arms.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Very interesting perspective Marley….Wow talk about putting all your chips to the middle of the table. Thats about as risky as it gets. If he brings it it will pay off.
Consider the fact that teams avoided him last year. They will not have that luxery this year. He will be tested A LOT more. I think he will have a down year which would play to the favor of the Raiders and signing him to a long term deal.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:27 am
hello Nation.
Nnamdi is one of the few athletes who might do some altruistic things with a large payday. Pay the man.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Marley…#135, nice post.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:30 am
I still say let Nnamdi walk. Sounds to me like he’s gotten a little too big for his britches. Joke him if he can’t…well, you know.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Raider Tay… that’s luxUry… just lookin out LMN..lol.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:33 am
If I was a OC and I had to choose between thowing against Hall or Nandi. I would definitely go after Nandi. Hall will take your mistakes to the house.

Hey! I’m neighbors with Dakota up here in Montana now.

July 15th, 2008 at 10:45 am
One thing about DeAngelo is he held his own against a division that DOES toss the ball in the air. The AFC West recently has been more of a run division. By signing DeAngelo it also takes a lot of the pressure off the Raiders to sign Nnamdi to big big $$$$.

Amen. I was just about to post the same response when I saw Raider Tay’s comment in the “recent comments column”, but you beat me to the punch.
Raider Tay’s a die hard fan and means well but his comment is indicative of so many fans being in denial of the fact that teams are hardly going to pass on us at all. They won’t need to.

things may change for the better this year, I hope so, but until Robbo’s boys prove they can do it…
July 15th, 2008 at 10:52 am
If I remember right, Al used to PAY his stars…or at least to GET star performers. If he paid this man, Nnamdi, top dollar as he paid the others, it may make a different kind of statement to the team, that “Greatness is Rewarded.” Professional athletes are getting paid crazy money and should bring it each game. But, adding “statement Money” to what the Raiders are required to do for this franchise player may contribute almost as much to changing the losing culture as when they brought in the new coach.
F. Robinson
PS I know they paid a lot for Kelly & Sands, Hall & Wilson, etc., but find a great DT and this team may do very, very well.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:53 am
I have to agree with Oaklgnen (who was posting under the name “MR” earlier this morning); Favre would prefer to play for a team that has a chance to go to a SB THIS year. Even if all of the reports on Kiffin and Al’s cold war are entirely made up, and Kiffin is here for the long haul and will have significant control of the offense and offensive personnel, …and, Kiffin turns out to be as good as, or better than, Gruden, we’re still at least 2 years away. Favre doesn’t have that kind of time.

July 15th, 2008 at 10:58 am
One more thing to consider, apparently we were able to fit Nnamdi´s 9.75 salary under this years cap.
If and when we sign him to a long term deal we´ll free up a huge chunk of cap space with his signing bonus being prorated and his cap number going down millions, we may be waiting to get that space for next season since we we don´t need it right now, we are not signing anyone else.
It´s like DeAngelo´s deal, he´ll count for less than 3 million this year, by signing Nnamdi long term next season we reduce his cap number from 11 million or so to 3 maybe 4 million, giving us some room to maneuver.
Of course, that´s provided Nnamdi would want to sign such a deal, not a given when you consider post 135.
July 15th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I am in Atlanta and saw Every Raider game on DTV and also had the dubius distinction of watching Falcon games and watching their post-game follies and hearing their fans vent ad naseum. Hall will be a perfect number two (is a very good number one, too). I have nothing to say about him negative (he is a Raider), but he is no Nnamdi! Nnamdi is the best all-around corner in the league, no one was thrown to with less regularity (although Fabian Washington was on the other side). No TD’s thrown on Nnamdi last year. While people talk about Champ Bailey being the best, I remember Jerry Porter misusing him for two or three TD’s. You will not know how good he is until he’s gone (or hopefully would be gone). Let’s not see that eventual reality, pay him!

Considering the fact that we didn’t address our run defense, that would require our opponents to mysteriously ditch the run when playing us. You already said yourself that you don’t see that happening.
Nothing wrong with fan optimism, and believing that our poor run defense will somehow just step it up and play the run better. It’s just that in this league usually defensive units are at the mercy of their players’ strong points. And I don’t believe the strengths of any of our front seven include playing the run.
It’ll take a miracle.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:00 am
F. Robinson,
good points about the psychology of “star money”, but as the NotForLong has proven time and again, stars are too often just meteorites.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Terrapin, your right about Hartwell. I think hes going to be key to our defense this year.909,Marley,and Terrapin, what do guys think about our run defense. You guys do know, that if we cant stop the run this year, its going to be all for naught. Hopefully Hartwell plugs the line of scrimmage, and Wilson takes Lt`s fargan head off. Big Al did what he could, this offseason, to improve the run defense, he picked every lineman that was availble, hey but he has to do this thing with ASO, and it also happens to be the right thing to do as well. July 15th, 2008 at 11:08 am
good to see you all get along today
July 15th, 2008 at 11:08 am
I keep forgetting to point out, in the name of full disclosure, that the Colts had the worst run defense in the league in 2006, until Bob Sanders, a safety, returned from a knee injury, at which point they were rock solid. So when I claim, over and over again, that the Raiders have done nothing to improve their run defense, despite having signed a proven run-stuffing safety, either I don’t know what I’m talking about or I’m simply being disingenuous. You make the call.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:09 am
LMN,
how do you spell Nnamdi in Danish?
July 15th, 2008 at 11:10 am
M, I’m not optimistic but I do hope our defense does somehow stop the run. I’ll be rooting for them. It’s just I don’t expect them to do it, considering what I already know about the strengths and weaknesses of our front 7. But I hope they pull it off, regardless. Later.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:12 am
MR,
having the anti-Stu at safety could be a distinct difference maker. could bolster the entire corps. we’ll just see what we’ll see won’t we.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Oakglenn (posting as MR), I hope we mirror the success of Indy. It’s rare that a front 7, that plays poorly against the run, suddenly steps it up with a little help from the secondary. My guess is that with Indy it comes down to team chemistry and coaching, too. Again, let’s hope. But I have to admit I’m not optimistic about it.

goodnews, the niners only have 2 bloggers on there blog site, and i raided them ha.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:14 am
On a different topic, I don´t get the Packers, just get Favre his job back.
Teams are being forced to bring back the likes of 45 yr. old Vinny, insurance salesman Chris Redman and play stiffs such as Cleo Lemon, Brooks Bollinger, Kyle Boller, David Carr, Brock Berlin, Chris Weinke and others.
And the Packers don´t want a Hall of Fame QB who can still play?.
Is Aaronn Rodgers the hold up?.
Just tell Favre to come back and promise to play 2 more seasons, they drafted Brian Brohm who they can groom for those 2 seaons, trade Rodgers if he´s hurt and get ready for the playoffs next season.

#169, Neither your just a MORON…
July 15th, 2008 at 11:19 am
M, the front seven is where our problem lies vs the run. Stu out of the picture is not going to solve anything there. Huff hasnt shown hes a better tackler than Stu, hopefully he has better instincts and gets a few int’s.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Could someone explain to MR that I’m not posting as him. Thank you.
Bob, I think the Packers are just tired of the Brett Favre retirement saga every year. It messes with their draft preparation. I think this year they have finally had enough. That being said, trade his rights outside the division. Jon Gruden, I’m talking to you here.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Marley,
I think Farve is butt hurt because the Packers front office didn’t get on their collective knees and beg him to come back after leading them to the Championship game. The fact that the team committed their future to Rodgers and have invited Farve back as a back up should be enough for Brett to show up to training camp and try to compete for the starting QB job. Once he is in camp the fan base will scream for him to start and if he plays well he will start. However, he wants the Packers to give him the starting job and then he’ll show up-great QB but a huge drama queen…
July 15th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Who cares if someone makes a mistake in spelling nnamdi that don’t mean ppl don’t like him any less than one who gets it right, but anyways I don’t see how some people can say cb is the easiest position to fill if that was the case then many rookies and undrafted players would make an instant impact. The fact of the matter is that with all the changes the league has made, its more geared up for the offense to play more open than back in the day so when you have a rare guy like nnamdi with the size strength ,speed and play making ability that has found his way and actually “gets it” on how to be not only a productive cb but to be known by peers as a shut down corner……you don’t treat him any kind of way and to say just anyone can play his role is pure idiocity
July 15th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Mistabrown,
Good morning to you.
I was taking the Bob Sanders analogy that MR threw in here and I ran with it.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Why would anybody want to post as “MR”, he’s a total idiot all by himself…

July 15th, 2008 at 11:31 am
Watching the game last night. Stacey Torn was a VERY nice safety and a nice tandum with McElroy.
RIP.
On the famous play that Bo took Bosworth into the end zone. Bosworth hit Bo on his shoulder pad if he would have gone lower he might have had a chance but that was just a poor tackle. I wonder if RR was teachng tackling to the Hawks in 87.
Marc Wilson looked pretty good at times..

Yeah, you have a point, but maybe they should have just said that it would be an open competition instead of saying “we moved on, but you can be the back-up”.

OakGlenn, you told me yesterday the NYG hardly blitzed the Pats in the SB. Well I have the game on DV-R and OakGlenn you are completely wrong as usual.
Here is just the first half VanillaGlenn….JUST THE FIRST HALF!
NE 1st possession - Safety blitz from our boy Gibril
NE 2nd possession - Corner blitz on a run play stuffed NE on 3-1, punt
NE 3rd possession - LB blitz - sack
NE 4th possession - Gibril Wilson saftey blitz - incompletion
Next play..
NE 4th possession - 3-13 LB blitz - completion
NE 4th possession - Safety & Lb blitz
VanillaGlenn, you’re a fraud and a joke. DO YOU WANT THE SECOND HALF OR SHOULD I STOP RIGHT THERE ?

Isn’t someone going to say, “No! Come on KK, stay!”? What a swell bunch. And you wonder why I’m leaving.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:49 am
i really woul dlove to see NA sign for a number of year. It is still possible because Al loves CB’s. he proved that every year in the draft. You can’t compare a DT salary to a CB salary, that apples to oranges. NA wants what Hall got (apples to apples). About stopping the run, That was not kelly’s full time job, noe it is, so lets see what he can do. He’s peers thin khe can be great. Just ask Sapp.

How in the hell are we going to win more than 4 games if every son neighbor can put 120+ yards on the ground on our defense?

it’s been a while fellas….
not signing aso to a long term deal is pretty metephorical of why most(myself included) question uncle al’s current state of mind. nothing against tommy kelly, who, i’m sure we’re all rooting for, but why does TK get paid before NA. kelly is nothing more than potential, while asomugha is a proven, YOUNG talent. to top it off, NA has to swallow the fact that he isn’t even the highest paid cb on the team when it can be argued he’s one of the best players at his position in the league.
shrewd genius or dementia??

is demented genius an option?
