Chiefs at the bottom of QB heap
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 17th, 2008 at 3:23 pm in Oakland Raiders.
In the days leading up to the first day of training camp, I’ll review the state of the rest of the AFC West and how they match up with the Raiders, as well as all Raiders position groups heading into the first practice on July 24. Today’s entry takes a look at the Kansas City Chiefs.
If Brett Favre were to wind up in the AFC West, the only destination that makes sense is Kansas City.
True, Favre probably isn’t going to be interested in Kansas City for one of the reasons he wouldn’t consider Oakland _ coming off a 4-12 record and in a rebuilding phase, the Chiefs don’t appear anywhere close to making a playoff run.
But while I deliniated my reasons in a previous blog as to why it wouldn’t make sense for the Raiders to pursue Favre, it would make perfect sense for Carl Peterson to do as he did 15 years ago with Joe Montana and attempt to get one last year or two out of a legend.
Otherwise, the Chiefs are pinning their hopes on Brodie Croyle, winless in six starts last season. It didn’t help that Croyle had little help from his blockers last season _ the Chiefs have one of the worst offensive lines in the league.
But the fact is, Croyle couldn’t win the starting job from perennial backup Damon Huard at the outset last season, and although he is the expected starter in 2008, there is no hard evidence he is up to the task of being an NFL starter.
A third-round pick in 2006, there is every chance the Chiefs will be looking for their quarterback of the future in the 2009 draft, which would make Arrowhead Stadium the perfect place for a guy like Favre who may not be able to resist the urge to play, even if it’s against his better judgement.
When the Raiders beat the Chiefs 20-17 at Arrowhead last Nov. 25, the best quarterback on the field was not Croyle _ who was 12-for-23 for 145 yards and an interception _ but Daunte Culpepper, who was an efficient 15 of 22 for 170 yards and no interceptions.
Short of Favre, you wonder if the Chiefs consider making a run at Culpepper if Croyle struggles as he did last year during training camp and the preseason.
If the Chiefs don’t bring in a quarterback, it’s up to offensive coordinator Chan Gailey to work miracles in his first year on the job.
Kansas City is the lone team in the division without a settled quarterback situation, with San Diego (Philip Rivers), Denver (Jay Cutler) and Oakland (JaMarcus Russell) firmly committed to their quarterback of the future.
Objectively, it’s difficult to look at the Chiefs as currently constituted and believe they can stay out of last place in the division.
Chiefs review
Kansas City was 4-12 in the AFC West, 1-1 against the Raiders. Ranked 32nd in rushing, 31st in total offense, 13th in total defense, 28th in rushing defense.
What’s new
Draft netted probable starters in DT Glenn Dorsey, LT Brendan Albert, CB Brandon Flowers. Change-of-pace speed back Jamaal Charles arrived in the third round. Did very little in free agency, adding LB Demorrio Williams from Atlanta.
What’s to like
Dorsey and Flowers bring much needed youth and enthusiasm to a unit that sorely needs it. WR Dwayne Bowe was the league’s top rookie receiver last season, his numbers (70 receptions, 995 yards, 5 TDs) even more impressive given Kansas City’ poor passing game. Tony Gonzalez (91 receptions) remains the gold standard at his position and appears to have plenty left in the tank.
Arrowhead Stadium remains one of the NFL’s crown jewels in terms of a home venue and is always an advantage for the Chiefs.
What’s not
Kansas City committed huge money to Larry Johnson, and when he went down with an ankle injury, the running game went with him. The Chiefs averaged 3.3 yards per carry _ only the Chicago Bears were worse _ and gained just 1,248 yards.
(It’s a measure of how poor the Raiders played defense against the run that the Chiefs put two backs _ Johnson and Kolby Smith) over 100 yards against Oakland).
Perhaps Johnson will return to his 2005-06 form, when 3,359 yards. But he also carried 416 times in 2006 and 336 in 2005, and history has not always been kind to that kind of workload. The fact is, Johnson has more tread on the tires than your average 28-year-old running back.
As happy as the Chiefs were to get Dorsey, they traded Jared Allen, one of the league’s top pass rusher and someone who has tormented the Raiders on a fairly regular basis, to Minnesota. Will Oakland regret passing on Dorsey? Maybe, some day. But they’ll make the Dorsey-for-Allen swap every time.
Williams was added to a linebacking corps which was expected to be a strength but instead was below average. Napoleon Harris, who has never been a bigtime playmaker, was the leading tackler. Donnie Edwards is past his prime and Derrick Johnson, a former first-round pick entering his fourth year, has been up and down.
News update
The Raiders announced the signing Thursday of wide receiver Chaz Schilens, a seventh-round pick out of San Diego State. Left unsigned heading into camp are wide receiver Arman Shields and defensive end Trevor Scott.

Norv turner will never win a superbowl
July 17th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Do you guys think that with a new stadium in LA the Raiders could pull some big crowds, or is LA just not a decent football town?
I don’t care where they play, as long as they are still the Raiders…I began rooting for them while they were in LA, and I had hoped that the move back to Oakland would have changed things, but it didn’t, so I guess neither place holds any special relevance too me as a fan,
but it would have been difficult to stomach the move to Baltimore that was rumored in the early 90s…
July 17th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

July 17th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

if ” l.a” gets a franchise it will be in anaheim, or carson…thats like the coliseum being in sac town…
July 17th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Sharpe went 96 yards and that wa due to Bresnahan not calling sticks formation on 3rd and 18 aided by Marquez Dope pulling his arm back because he is a 49er
July 17th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Shannon Sharpe went 96 yards, and all because Pope, former niner and bad raider, was playing flag football and Dorsett took one of his patented horrible angles and whiffed. And you know what, it was third and for ever and Breshanan actually blitzed for all those who want to blitz more.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
LA doesnt deserve a team…….too many bandwagons in that city
July 17th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

July 17th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
#137. LAR, It’s funny that you say that. I was talking to then Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown who was adamant that sports teams add nothing to a community. Needless to say I strongly disagreed especially in a City like Oakland, California. Brown told me, “show me something where every culture in Oakland, could embrace and rally around it, and I’ll support it.”
Well next game I looked around and in the section I was you had whites, blacks, latinos, all different asians, native americans, and tons of mixed races, men and women, all dancing and high fiving each other. I just shook my head.

Jerry Brown did what all the people before him did for Oakland and very likely the ones that came after him….nothing.
Oakland politicians are corrupt and self serving as any in america.

The 49ers first sellout season was 1982 and who did they play that first game and lose to as the teams first game from anew city? Yes the Raiders lol
July 17th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Brien….
Best, get your fingers under a ice bag. Mine are tired, just from READING…lol…take, care..

49ers= 1981 wasnt even a sellout season
July 17th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Brien
yeah they just startin to get into the hyphy movement down there,, I had to tell my cousin MAC DRE (RIP) was dead and the movement died with him..
July 17th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
i am truly happy to report ……….kc has just been eliminated from the 2008 playoffs…..this team sucks,
July 17th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Carl Peterson is a loser. People give him props, but the cheifs are at best second best in the west. The cheifs have great fans that are incredibly loyal, and have an infanat amount of patience. the stunts that King Carl pulls would not work in other markets where people expexct their team to win.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
hyphy lol……man i remember when hyphy wasa bad term like ” I’ma take this hphy ass ni–a Brien home he acting up way too mcuh”
July 17th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
LA 9ers??? Don’t think it can’t happen. As soon as Great America puts the final nail in Yorks Pipe Dream Coffin of moving the Whiners to Santa Clara, he’s gonna make a run to LA faster than broke drunks leaving Vegas.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
all of york’s businesses are in LA well a good amount are
July 17th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Nice one RaiderMike.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
the Lamar Hunt trophy is awarded to the AFC Champion guess which team has never won it? LOL
July 17th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Rusted bolts, on ch.2, is a NFL move. Not the local stations. CH.2 ALWAYS has their highest ratings when showing Raider games..
July 17th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
909 i know that but the Raider games were covered and were the priority there just a few years ago……the nfl is making the move because SD might be there
July 17th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

LA 49ers sounds better……how bout all those red jerseys in LA=bang bang bang shoot em up
July 17th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
kolby smith ran all over the raider defense last year: that was very embarrasing. that being said when kirk morrison stuck that kid in the back field, i was never prouder of that defensive unit. in 08 the d will have to make plays like that to win games consistently. i hope they learned and are ready to make those key stops. it don’t matter how many yards the other team runs for, if the d makes a big play in the closing minutes, the raiders will win more games.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
wouldnt that be great? the LA 9ers… just saying it makes my all happy inside
July 17th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
I think right wingers want the 49ers to move to LA so the castro district will commit a Jim Jones type of suicide following
July 17th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Time for, ice COLD beer and hose off the driveway.
Take care, all….
July 17th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
LA 49ers would be better than the Raiders winning a super bowl…….they can know how we felt back in the 80s.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Hey if the 49ers go to LA it wont be like the Raiders because they aint winning there and they aint coming back to SF ever LOL
July 17th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Well Dick, as the last Super Bowl proved and as the Raiders tried to take care in the draft, I don’t think you want your defense on the field with a 7 point lead or less late in a game. The Raiders got some offensive firepower so these games shouldn’t be so close in the end. Hopefully.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
schedule wnot tough this season……no indy, no cleveland, no pittsburgh, no titans, no jags, no bengals…we got the nfc south whoopie along with balt, mia and the nyj can we say 10-6 at least if healthy……..I can Al davis is god

July 17th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
I’VE BEEN copy pasting the ESPN insider but for some reason the tribune isn’t allowing t he posts!???
they have our secondary as 2nd (dallas) and offensive line as 27th.
i copied pasted in the past the insider comments but…. COMPETITION!
July 17th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Fact of the mattter: Bay area fans are just extremely paranoid because there is a chance the Raiders might move back to L.A. some day.
And LA fans hope that will happen, so we can go to every game and party, and bbq, and watch the Raiders just like ya’ll.
It’s a love hate between us LA fans and you Oak fans, but like it was said previosly, we are one nation.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
There may be a word in the post that is keeping it from posting.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Funny how this LA feller shows up on the blog today, knows everybody, chit chats everybody.
Funny that, never seen him before.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
KoolKell - dude let it go, you are so freakin paranoid man. Jerry doesn’t care…
July 17th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
I would love for the Raiders to move to San Antonio
Then I could get season tickets.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
K-Rock - my point exactly brother. We all want the Raiders to be where WE live, no matter if it’s friggin mars. I would still be a Mars Raiders fan. I want them back in L.A. for personal reasons, so I can go to every game.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Guys it hurt me to watch the Raiders leave L.A. I totally understood what Oakland fans went through… But they need to stay in Oakland thats where they belong (God that kills me to say aaaarrgh) ok I vented thats enough about that back to football
July 17th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
The NFLN is about to show a 1 hour “game of the week” special about the Wild Card game vs the NYJ from the 2001 season.
That Raiders team started 10-3 but lost the final 3 reg. season games to give NE a bye and homefield advantage, a week later we paid for it by getting robbed at old Foxboro Stadium.
Just block that out and enjoy the Jets game, we won 38-24.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Well, if Nnamdi is not going to be at camp next week. There’s no need for Javon Walker either.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Tyrone Wheatley… smashed on them jets I hope Bush is our new faster Wheatley who mcan catch…
July 17th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Oops, nevermind post 231, turns out it´s the week 17 game that we lost, not the Playoffs win. Wrong info on the guide.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Damn that LA guy! And STFU, Einstein (and I am using the term loosely). You are the paranoid one, not me.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
2002 AFC Wildcard Jets at Raiders on NFL Network game of the week right now
July 17th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Hey KK or Mr. or whoever you are go hide under another bridge, freakin troll.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Sorry, see some guys already posted that.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Coming from someone called El Dirty, that really stings. And you oughta know about bridges, I might add. You aint fooling anyone, sucka.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Shut up little troll. Act like a man
July 17th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I’m no troll. Never have been and yes I’m a little Dirty ask your wife.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
Sorry Dirty,
I was talking to my little Petey troll imposter, not you.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
whoah, whoah, whoah. HEY!!! OK you guys know the rules around here. No calling out fellow Raider fans, no disrespect, No bad language, and no telling each other to STFU.
Exceptions: In the case of MR, maddenraider, Debartolo Raider, and as he likes to be called MoRon, all the above are not only acceptable but in fact encouraged. Also extreme language, gay and transvestite references and animal grunting noises are considered appropriate when dealing with him.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
I have been on this site for a minute… The REAL KK is a cool guy this OTHER KK is a imposter, you can tell! The verbage and tone is completely different! I cant believe no one else sees it!
July 17th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
It doesn’t matter how talented your QB is if you can’t pass block. The bucs won the Super Bowl with a game manager like Brad Johnson. The Raiders have two black holes at the Tackle positions. The Chiefs went a long way towards addressing their O Line issues with the selection of Branden Albert. Expect the team to struggle to pass the ball.
division should look like this
1. San Diego
2. Kansas City
3. Oakland
4. Denver
July 17th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Dirty and the rest of you,
If anyone is calling you names with my moniker, it’s the troll, that’s all the poor fool’s interested in, that’s his sorry life.
Me, I’m interested in the Raiders, only.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
I know Brotha I’m out for a while… U boys fix this mess… This place used to be fun.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
This time next week, we’ll be discussing the Raiders first practice, hello.
Will Tommy Kelly practice, Javon Walker? Nnamdi?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Alright Dirty, peace/out
July 17th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
P.S. 245
UR Crazy with that forecast. Get some knowledge
July 17th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Did you see this moronic post by a journalist that has obviously not read the newspapers in about two months.
What a dolt, do some research before you write an article spouting off about JaMarcus being 300lbs.
What are you going to write about next President Kennedy’s assassination.

July 17th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
These lies and rumors started by feeble minded bay area lackey reporters end up spreading nationwide because of the disdain limp wristed writers feel for our organization.
I hate journalists!
July 17th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Oh I forgot. The Raiders will win the division and McFadden will rush for 2000 yards. Glenn Dorsey will break his leg in training camp. Jay Cutler will be hospitalised for his diabetes. The talented San Diego roster will fall off the face of the Earth, leaving the door open for the Raiders.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Sorry, fellas. I just get a little uptight sometimes about my little fan.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
You little pathetic Petey, getting your rocks off troll?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Do you really get your rocks off impersonating me? why?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
And then you cower like a little puppie when I’m around. Too sad.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
I’m gonna go have a drink know and watch Law & Order.
I hope it’s good for you (not)
July 17th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Herm Edwards is like many a guy from the NY media area - way overrated. The guy is a franchise killer. Don’t expect much from the Chefs but here is the problem…The Raiders MUST stop the run and make the Chefs try to pass. Giving up 100+ against the league’s WORST run offense was bad. Doing it twice was all the proof you need the Raiders run D stinks.
On the other hand if the Raiders can get an early lead that could slow the running game more than Burgess or Sands will.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
July 17th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Catch ya later, troll.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Don’t worry, everyone. I’m not on the verge of a mental breakdown, it only seems that way. I actually have a kung fu grip on reality.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Ya’ damn skippy - Herm is waaayy overrated. Stinks as a matter of fact.
However, I would say that he knows “how to play the game” and I’m not talking about football either. This whole “publicized rebuilding” drama is well designed and smart his behalf. And he got ownership, the media and fans onboard with it LOL!
It effectively lowers expectations and opens up the window for more allowable losses; which he surely will deliver. He gets to keep his job just that much longer as a result. No one expects much b/c they’re “rebuilding” and purged their vets for young potential. Smart on his part for sure!~! Great strategy to keep you job for another year or two. If management didn’t fall for the banana in the tail pipe he would be fired already!
July 17th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
COW, its true our defense is atrocious but teams like the Texans & Bears with not much of a running beat us with their passing game. Our defense is really just pathetic all across the board and you Rob Ryan supporters ( all 3 of you ) better hope Kiffin got in his ear and forced some things on him.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Chiefs suck bad man - bottom of the AFC West. But, Dwayne Bowe is going to be a pain in the azz - you better believe it. That boy is bad.
QB? What QB? Aging RB, Aging TE. They are just so far off. They have 1 WR, maybe a DT and a lineman and I say lineman because he’s NEVER played LT to my knowledge (maybe for 1 or 2 games in college). A BUNCH of draft picks …just call them the college all-star squad in their first year in the NFL.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Herm Edwards: “We’re rebuilding, we’re getting younger, we’re opening up competition”
[Translation]: Don’t expect many wins this year and maybe next year too. Don’t hold me absolutely accountable for the losses as we’re rebuilding our team. (Just take the pressure off my back and buy me some time).
Results: Losses and more losses, very few wins and Herm keeps his job b/c everyone (fans, media, management) is buying into this “Rebuilding”.
Will they ever stop to ask themselves who fault it is that they’re in this situation? Herm had many years to make his team younger - many years with a mediocre team going nowhere and he never thought to add better, younger talent? Now all of a sudden the “R” word pops up. Brilliant.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Branden Albert was projected as a 2nd round Guard until he got “hot” 2 months before the Draft with his Combine and Pro Day workouts and tape from his 2 career games at LT vs woeful Pitt and Middle Tennessee.
He´s athletic and has tools but it remains to be seen if he can make the transition from College G to NFL LT. And he´ll turn 24 already this year, for comparison´s skae, Kwame Harris is just 2 years older.
Albert´s former UV linemate D´Brick Ferguson has not exactly set the league on fire in his first 2 seasons after being the 4th pick in 06 and he was much more qualified and refined as an NFL LT prospect.
He´s talented and he´ll play somewhere along that line but he´s also far from a sure shot at LT.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Terrapin….post 267.
It´s Carl Peterson´s fault, Herm Edwards has little to do with it.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
OK so maybe I’m a little hard on the man - he’s just been there 2 years. Hopefully he’ll be there many more.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Regarding post 268 and Albert´s age, the fact that he came out as a Junior but he´s gonna turn 24 in a couple of months means he was playing as a 21 year old Freshman, he was bound to make an impression and dominate as he grew older and kept playing younger kids.
Ok, I´m just being a Raiders homer trying to bash a Chiefs move, but it does make you wonder if he´s all that…
July 17th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Herm Edwards is another Coach who coaches “not to lose”. They lose everytime. I’m thinking Kiffin’s the same way.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
The summation of this series is that the AFC West is sucking wind big time. The Dolts get their credit but I highly doubt if they’re SB bound. They’re lacking at WR, their RB is aging, they lost Lorenzo O’Neal and Micheal Turner and their NT is getting older. Absent pro-bowl caliber replacements, their window is closing and the decline is inevitable.
KC just suxs - Period!
The Donks? They have a QB - maybe. They run it by committee, but without that star they won’t go too far. They are begging for WR help and their Defense suxs.
RAIDERS!?! Well, not much can be expected to be honest. Although we, as Raider fans, always expect the world as if its our right to have it - which it is. The cynical view is that our Run defense suxs wind, our QB is too green and our Oline is patchwork and must prove a lot. But we have a lot of talent - that much is undeniable. So the cynical view is that we’re right there with Denver but above KC (maybe both if you really think about it).
July 17th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
