Kelly talks, so do others

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 24th, 2008 at 8:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Maybe it was the added responsibility of one of the NFL’s offseason contracts or that Tommy Kelly was in an agreeable mood.

Whatever the reason, Kelly chose Thursday after practice to end a polite and pleasant four-year silence with Bay Area beat writers.

“I guess I got to talk to you now,” Kelly said as he pulled off his headphones when inquiring minds wanted to know if he would answer a few questions.

Kelly is coming off off-season ACL surgery which didn’t prevent the Raiders from investing $18.125 in guaranteed money in a deal which could reach more than $50 million over seven years.

I feel good,” Kelly said. “The knee feels real good. Nice to get hit for a change, get back into some contact.”

Some more comments from Kelly follow.

– On his newfound responsibility as a team leader considering the contract: “Responsibility only messes you up when you (aren’t) ready for it. I’ll be all right.”

– On playing his preference for playing inside at the “three technique”: “I’m more comfortable inside because everything happens inside. All the plays get run inside. It’s cool to get to the quarterback inside. I’d much rather be inside, but as long as I was on the field, I didn’t care.”

– On the difference in his style of play with predecessor Warren Sapp: “Sapp is more of a finesse guy, he danced … I’m a little more aggressive, try to get into my man.”

– The day he was injured: “It was a rough day. My son was born in the morning time and then I went and played. That was my first game my grandma ever seen me play in the league. It was rough when Dr. King told me your knee is gone. But everything happens for a reason.”

– What it felt like for the Raiders to invest that kind of money in him: “(It) surprised me, but you know, but kind of makes you feel like you’re wanted. Somebody really wants you as a player and thinks a lot of you and that type of player you can become for them.”

– The reason for his silence: I understand a lot of things come with being a professional athlete, but I just like to play. I don’t like to be bothered with all the other stuff. I’m not saying the media is a nuisance or anything. I just like to go to work and come home. Now you know you have to be a leader and everything, you got to take on stuff you probably don’t want to do in the past but you have to do it.”

Walker reveals little

Wide receiver Javon Walker declined to go into details about his Las Vegas escapade which left him beaten and robbed, but appeared none the worse for wear. His face was unmarked, indicating police reports which included a broken orbital bone and a fractured jaw were incorrect.

Walker pretty much is as advertised as an interview subject _ he is agreeable and not contentious at all. He also doesn’t always put words together in ways that make gramatical sense, even if you have a general idea what he’s trying to say.

“Everybody just go into speculations of what they heard and what they think they know . . . when I get ready to come out and tell what really happened, I’ll clear it up then,” Walker said.

Thursday was not that day.

Walker did talk around the issue when discussing his reputation and the public perception of him.

“I don’t have a record. I don’t have a rap sheet,” Walker said. “You don’t hear about Javon Walker getting arrested. People’s (perception) of me is like, he just leaves different teams because he’s not happy. Well, like any other American, that’s my right if I don’t like a job, that’s people’s perspective of me. But, outside the field, I mean, you talk to people anywhere around this country, they say I’m the nicest person off the field.”

Russell in charge

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell joked that teammates were wondering if he really knew the way to Napa, having missed training camp with a contract issue last year. A year later, he is the unquestioned starter and appears to be building on a strong offseason.

“Today was the first day, and I kind of felt like I was 1,000 pounds out there,” Russell said. “That’s your first day in shoulder pads, as a team we all did pretty good. Just come out here in the morning and try to keep it going.”

Relax. Russell isn’t anywhere near 1,000. He said he is 269 _ the same as he was during minicamps and OTAs. He says he is shape becasue he is responsible for the welfare of a lot of people.

“Just knowing that you’re able and capable, it’s pretty good to keep the body in shape,” Russell said. “Just by being a quarterback, you got to look at it: Everybody on the team gets paid off of what I do and the rest of the team does. I hate to say it but I’m accountable for a lot of the guys’ families.”

Why Asomugha reported

Nnamdi Asomugha trotted out the two-dollar words to explain his decision to come to training camp.

“I had heard all the apocryphal stories during the offseason of what was going on so I wanted to put everything to rest and just show up . . . It went both ways. I had a lot of people saying don’t show up and I had enough people saying show it up so it helped me out. I sought out the counsel that was needed in this situation and I was able to come and be here.”

Did Asomugha seek the counsel of Charles Woodson, by chance?

“I spoke to him early on,” Asomugha said. “ I’m not going to tell you what he said, but you can probably figure it out.”

Asomugha conceded some players he were surprised he would risk injury and future millions by reporting to camp.

“When I was talking to a lot of the players, that they were surprised that I came,” Asomugha said. “ But at the same time they weren’t because they know it’s not about money for me. I really want to win games. That’s a big part of why I’m here. It’s putting that on the line, that you could get hurt, and those types of things. But it’s in the name of being a cohesive unit and coming together and trying to win football games.”

    Seth,

I agree. Nnamdi is the kind of player and person the Raiders absolutely need. Attitudes like his are infectious. The Raider organization would be foolish to let this guy walk without a HUGE contract this offseason.

  27. HendersonNV Raider Says:

It sounds like Walker dodged a bullet health wise. If he did not in fact break his orbital or jaw, then the ation can just be concerned with his knee. If he can stay healthy and the D-line does it’s job, the Raiders can improve dramatically.

Ravenous bears eat 2 guards at mines
    July 24, 2008
MOSCOW — A pack of enormous bears searching for food ate two men at mines in Russia’s Pacific Kamchatka region and have kept hundreds of geologists and miners from reaching the mine, news agencies reported Wednesday.

Up to 30 Kamchatka bears— similar to grizzlies—reportedly prowled around two mines of a platinum mining company where they killed the two guards on Thursday.

That knee is different story though.

Just got home from work, and I knew what I would find here. Lotsa fun! For real now, the Raiders are back on the front burner! Hopefully this year, the team will be better than the sportswriting.

  38. Dakota Says:

Roseville, you must have heard this one?

The Colorado State Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen, and golfers to take extra precautions and be on the alert for bears while in the Dillon, Breckenridge, and Keystone area.

They advise people to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the bears unexpectedly.

They also advise you to carry pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity.

People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings.

Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear droppings have bells in them and smell like pepper spray.

Well since all in here, or most I should say, are making predictions, heres mine,..8-8,..if the ball bounces our way, but it usually doesnt, 7-9 looks more like it…but as you all know, I will be there,..will you?

  43. dick v Says:

T kelly has a lot to prove. Hell all of them do. I am glad he is owning up to his new role. Everyone is assuming this was a bad move by the Al, but they will be shocked if that old bastard is right.

  44. RosevilleRaider Says:

With the relatively easy schedule, the upgrade in personnel, Kiffin’s second year implementing his program, and the state of the AFC West, I don’t see any reason, other than injuries, why the Raiders won’t go 9-7.

  45. dick v Says:

The team seems to be coming together. Walker, Kelly, and Namdi all showing up ready to go are great signs.

  46. I WILL Says:

Another thing that has developed,…our tailgate organizer got word from Hetfield this week,…Metallica might play the lot again this year,..for the Pats game in December,…last time they did was title game against the Titans,…he said Hetfield wanted to play the lot for Denver,..but schedule didnt work out…if anyone cares, James season tix are in 217,…always watches from the west side club.

  47. Dakota Says:

    9-7…we are becoming relevant again.

What a great first day. it’s what we have all been hoping for and now it’s here. Nnamdi ran back an interception … is this a prelude to what he’s going to do this year?
Hope they (opponents) have the guts to throw his way. If not, they can deal with Hall. GO RAIDERS!!!

  51. Big E Says:

    9-7 sounds great

  52. Big E Says:

    I Will

that be killer to be there when Metallica plays. Great omen…good things are taking shape

  53. SR Raider Says:

    53rd!! woo-hoo

  54. RosevilleRaider Says:

Exactly Big E, that’s 5 W’s right there. Throw in the Bills, Dolphins, Jets and Falcons, and you have your 9 wins. The Bucs, Panthers, Texans, Ravens, and Saints are winable as well, but I don’t see the Raiders winning more than 10 even if everything goes their way. The roster is young, and we have a lot of new guys, as well as a fairly new program. All I’m sayin’, is that there is a lot of potential.

  55. JB Says:

    Big E, #51

To hell with splitting with the Bolts. Kick their butts twice too! They are not all that much nowadays. All they have is LT - an older LT without Neal to help on the blocking. 10-6 at a minimum and possibly more. Overly optimistic? You bet & why not. We’ve got a real QB this year, real receivers, an O-line with a good year’s experience under their belt, an upgraded running corp, it’s all good! We should also be much better on D too. If our front 4 can slow down or stop the run, were gold. A significantly upgraded D backfield with probably the bes set of corners, a SS that can tackle & hit and a FS who is finally playing where he should have been all along.

Why not be optimistic? As I see it, we are currently tied in first place. Life is good and football has once again returned.

  56. OT81 Says:

    1st

  57. I WILL Says:

Big E,..they used to play once a season,…havent since that Titans title game,…I would rather have Megadeth play.

  58. K-Rock Says:

Just win in New Orleans. I only get to see Raiders games live when they are in, or close to TX.

Last time they were in Houston, they went in at the half in the lead and then Collins threw 3 or 4 ints in the second half as the Raiders went down.

I hope they torch the Saints.

NATION in the Big Easy will be a blast. Hope to see some fans out on Sat. night before the game.

  59. MR Says:

That’s it K-Shlock. Hope the Raiders win in New Orleans and lose the other 15. 1-16. goes well with 19-61. Losers.

  60. dick v Says:

the bills are hardly an easy win. you can be sure that the Jets will have a solid defense. There are no easy wins in the Nfl.

  61. RosevilleRaider Says:

Dick V, I agree that those two games will be tough, but I also think that the Raiders are at least as good as those teams, and has a legitimate chance of winning both games.

Also, It’s a given that several of the teams that look weak now, will be very tough opponents. Look at Cleveland last year. That game killed me.

  62. Lowdown in Beijing Says:

    From the Sac Bee:

*The first-team linebackers were Thomas Howard, Kirk Morrison and … Ricky Brown today.

Damn I am good…called this one today.

I expect my main man Brown to seize the SLB position.

  63. RosevilleRaider Says:

The Raiders definitely need an upgrade at SLB.

  64. Blackholepriest Says:

Boy! reading these post today is like everyne is on a high. It’s the dame high I’ve been on since the day we drafted Russell. He will change everything, offensively and defensively. He gives us a legitimate chamce to win every game. This entire team will play with much more confidence with him at the helm.

Aso knows we can win now and he doesn’t want to be the one to reduce that chance, so he’s here. Russell’s talent makes evryone icluding the coaches more confident in executing whatever assignment they have.

The same as Montana for the 49ers or Elway for the Broncos. Now they know that they can compete…………..period

‘Black Moses’ will lead us to the promised land……trust me.

  65. KoolKell Says:

Hey you little impostor, you know you’re sick right? :-(

  66. not2day Says:

    9-7 thats all?sh*t i’m thinking about 12-4…….go RAIDER

  67. RosevilleRaider Says:

    9-7 if everything goes wrong.

  68. MR Says:

Another 4 win season right blackholepriest. That’s the promised land you fool. loser. 19-61 is the promised land for losers. Go niners.

  69. not2day Says:

MR….and never win a SUPER BOWL go well with the BOLTS huh?wat a great tradition u guy have CHARGERS.

  70. MR Says:

not2day. not ever. you are a loser from birth. go niners. screw the raiders.

  71. Blackholepriest Says:

No one is more optimistic than I, but we’ve got a lot of growing up to do. This will no be easy. We must first learn to close games out. That’s not easy.

The biggest thing is getting Russell’s timing down with his recievers. The sooner that happens the soner we’ll make big plays to win games instead of miss them.

The running game will keep us in games along with the defense but once Russell is able make throws late in games, meaning he and the WR corp is on the same page. That’s when you’ll see the confidence of this start to soar.

  72. not2day Says:

    MR is a niner fan,though he a BOLTS fan…

  73. K-Rock Says:

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This was the quote I was responding to MoRon. I would take the 9 wins plus one to get the 10 this guy was talking about.

If the Raiders get 9 and then need 1 from the list above, then I would pick the Saints because I would be at the game.

You really think I would want the Raiders to go 1-15?

    You need Jesus.

  74. K-Rock Says:

Broncos might lose Marshall for at least 4 games according to Shefter.

That leaves the Broncos with Keary Colbert and Darrell Jackson as starting WRs with scrubs behind them.

I hope this puts the Broncos in a hole they can’t recover from.

  75. raiderhomey Says:

Yes, I know it is getting a bit late, but it pretty much seems to me that a whole lot of afc west fans continue to blog in here to spew their bile-ous hatred of the Raiders. Could it be, maybe, the rest of these bums in the almighty, sacred, all encompassing nfl are actually, and truly frightened at the real prospect of this franchise running roughshod over the entire freak-in league, and everybody else who have so gleefully heaped it up, and on the Raiders this most recent last few seasons. Beware, there is a new sherrif in town, and his name is…………………..jamarcusasomcfadkelburgehowmorrgibdeangmhufrgalcoopkwamembushjavdrewhigterrjgro and oh, that’s right, that real cool tight-end from zona, they are all sweatin bullets, the massacre will be a pleasure to behold.

So this will be my last summer vacation.

  79. Bob Marley Says:

That’s good to hear, man. Say a prayer for the Raiders. I’ll know who to blame now if they don’t get the 10 wins I declared they would.

  80. dick v Says:

The broncs are going to have no weapons when Marshall is out. he is not beating that dui case set to start in August, and he will be punished for not reporting his arrest in the spring. The numerous domestic violence incidents will lead to 8 to 10 games.

  81. Oakglenn Says:

Make sure you say a prayer for all the thugs, living the life, too!

  82. K-Rock Says:

Don’t blame me (or God). I’m almost certain that Al Davis has sold his soul. :D

  83. Bob Marley Says:

The Broncos still usually find a way to beat us though, Dick V.

  84. K-Rock Says:

I always pray for thugs. Especially the ones punking MR.

    That poor guy needs Jesus.

  85. Bob Marley Says:

Sold his soul? Wow, K Rock. That’s harsh. What do you believe Al Davis has done that would convince you he’s sold his soul?

  86. Bob Marley Says:

    I hear that, K Rock.

  87. K-Rock Says:

It was a JOKE man. I was referring to his age.

  88. Bob Marley Says:

K Rock, are you certain that Jesus exists? Not everyone believes in Jesus Christ as their deity, you know.

  89. Bob Marley Says:

Oh, glad to hear that, regarding Al Davis selling his soul, K Rock. Because I was wondering what he’d ever done to make someone say that. I know the man. He doesn’t seem evil to me. But glad to hear you were just being facetious.

  90. K-Rock Says:

    Really? I had no ideal.

  91. Bob Marley Says:

No ideal about what, K Rock?

  92. K-Rock Says:

    Shanahan might disagree with you.

  93. Bob Marley Says:

Might disagree with whom, K Rock? And over what?

  94. K-Rock Says:

    Not everyone believes in Jesus…

I live under a rock. I thought the whole world loved Jesus.

  95. Bob Marley Says:

    Oh, got ya, K Rock.

  96. K-Rock Says:

Shanahan might disagree that Davis isn’t evil.

  97. dick v Says:

Marley I think there will be several break out oplayers, but Jamarcus will over shadow the rest. He has good feet, and good mechanics. If he hits that up field shoulder and sets his feet, he will have an amazing year in this offense: the little things will lead to success.
Huff, Morrison, and Curry will all step it up this year. If you look at the # of pass deflections Huff has, it is as good as any saety in the league. A half a step quicker and a little more concentration, he turns half those deflects into big time plays.
Curry has the talent to be a solid #2. He has the work ethic and now he is applying himself in the weight room. He will improve considerably. Morrison was born to play lb for the Raiders. He has great work ethic and is committed to improving. He wants it. A lot of people know his family out in these parts. His dad worked in the Oakland Ports for years, and raised his boy right. Namdi and Kirk will be the leaders of the defense: witch is saying something with play makers like Burgess and deanglo hall on the team.

  98. dick v Says:

Marley I don’t see it this year. The Broncos can not stop the run, and they have got their hopes on the likes of Dwayne Robertson, and Koudividas. They simply do not have the talent. That O line they always have is simply not there any more. Loosing Nalen and Lepsis is too much for any team. Clady may be a stud, but he is a rookie, and he will struggle. Jay cutler is the 1 qb that may be dumb enough to challenge the secondary. The Raiders are flat out better than this team, and the hate runs deep to not let off. They will be swept. I am more worried about kc in week 2 then any Denver game.

  99. Bob Marley Says:

    Ok, Got ya, K Rock.

Dick V, I hope things are better this year, too. But Denver always finds a way to beat us. It’s just an omen.

  100. Oakglenn Says:

Dick V, when you were talking about them not being able to stop the run, I thought you were talking about us! Ha ha.

    I WILL.

  103. RaiderMight Says:

    JaMarcuss’ best friends: http://www.raiders.com/uploadedImages/Photo_Gallery/RB%20Darren%20McFadden.jpg

  104. dick v Says:

The broncos have a run defense that consists of Marcus “cocaine ” Thomas, Dwayne Robertson, elvis dumervil, ekuban, jarvis moss, tim crowder. They are way to soft in the middle, and Moss and dumerville are strickly pass rushers. dj williams is the only lb they have. Boss bailey is a slow strong safety playing out of position. they will have the worse run defense in the league by far.

  105. dick v Says:

the broncs had no business giving us warren and trying to replace him with sam adams. John Clayton said that denver was really interested in Tommy Kelly. they would much rather have our dt’s.

  106. Oakglenn Says:

Dick V, every time you talk about Denver’s poor run defense, I think you’re talking about us! Ha ha. Also, Denver didn’t really want Kelly. Shanarat just leaked that to the press knowing Al Davis would bite and overpay Kelly with money that could be spent more wisely elsewhere. That’s what Raider fans don’t get about Al Davis, anymore. His reclusive, cynical style anymore is used against him by his adversaries much more often than it works to his advantage. The press may act surprised by Davis’s moves this off season, but to the other AFC West front offices, his general management of the Raiders is as predictable as his game planning.

  107. Rick The Hunter Says:

Its a lil after 6am out here in South Florida so I figured I’d chime in before going to work. Im looking foward to the upcoming season. Now we all have to admit that every year we all convince ourselves that this is the year we make the miracle turnaround only to fall to the bottom again.
Guess what,,, Im convinced that this year we will make that miracle turnaround. I know we get ridiculed for being too optimistic but its called being a fan, and thats what fans do. Will we win the Super Bowl? Why not. Why not have high hopes for our team. Its called being a fan. I’ll deal with reality when I go to work and pay the bills, but when it comes to being a Raider fan Im gonna continue to be crazy enough to believe that this is the year we go back to the top. Its called being a fan. I know Im not alone. YA KNOW?!

  108. Andrews mom Says:

  110. Johnny Rebel Says:

Inman is the first flip flopper, saying Russell missing camp last year is a good thing now, lets start watching for all the flip flopping and bandwagoneers. A few writers should loose some credibility this year as the Raiders start winning.

  111. Johnny Rebel Says:

Here’s a quote from Kiffin that sounds like he is referring to Sapp, Schweigert, ect… all the players whining to the media now. “There was so much negativity when we got here, so much loosing, so much the players were always complaining about this, whining about that. And we’ve gotten rid of a lot of that.”

  112. Johnny Rebel Says:

Its fun to watch Davis put all the people in place to do what he can’t do and hasn’t been able to do for a long time now, run the franchise from his hip pocket, now Hackett will scout upcoming opponents as Davis once did long, long ago. Donkeys are first on the list.

  113. Johnny Rebel Says:

All you Dorsey fans can find him on a couch in KC somewhere getting fat as camp begins.

  114. Johnny Rebel Says:

Heres a first, Tim Scott of the Times Herald thinks the Raiders have a tough schedule, don’t spew your drinks in laughter.

  115. Johnny Rebel Says:

Good read, notice this guy already calling Kelly a “beast” inside.

Gotta love Nnambi. Pay him, Al.

  117. Al's Bedpan Attendant Says:

I’d like to see some info on Turd and Warren to see how stout the NT position looks on inside runs.

  118. El NegroyPlata Says:

Asomugha is the GREATEST Raider of this century (tied with GANNON); if Al dont sign him with a multiple year contract; hes crazy

  119. Senile Kings' Aricept Says:

Post #117 says it all. If both “Kelly & the Turd “,(…upcoming BSPN movie (?)…),can refrain from counting their money and focus on what they’re being obscenely paid for,…who knows ? Today…the division, tommorrow….

  120. El NegroyPlata Says:

Kelly its gonna be o.k. if healthy; But Tardell needs to born again to be good. Sands sucks

  121. Raider4life Says:

Any word yet if they dumped LaFat? Looks like everybody is in camp and ready to go. Can’t wait for MNF against the donkeys and Shanarat.

  122. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

I am encouraged to hear Warren is (for now) starting over Sands. They both have reputations for taking plays off, and as soon as either does they should be sent to the bench to discuss it. With Joseph and Shaw spelling Kelly on occasion, maybe we can build a respectable run D. All we need is Hartwell to regain his hunger from a few years back…

  123. Senile Kings' Aricept Says:

I’d be curious to know just how good, statistically, are top defenses in stopping the run , as per yards per carry, and what one could expect,(given the assumption that the “K & T Trust” excell), by an improvement of ,let’s say , 4.9 yds per carry to under 4.0 yds per carry ?

  124. Raider4life Says:

Bo–The run D can only get better now that we have gotten rid of the worst football player in NFL history in Lil Stui Schweigert. That b*tch was notorious for interviews after the game and saying how he did his job and everyone else didn’t. Good ridance to that piece of sh*t.

  125. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Anyone seen this new A-11 offense. Not for the pro game but its sweeping the H.S. scene. Basically it’s everyone go deep.

  126. Senile Kings' Aricept Says:

With all due respect to “Shanarat”, After watching him all these years on the sidelines, I’ve thought that his mannerisms and demeanor depict that of a wildly masturbating, defrocked ,pedophile Catholic priet. Thus,….. “Pedihan” or “Shanifile”…

  127. Terrapin Says:

By all accounts this camp has started off on a great foot:

    The very good news.
    1. JR looks really good and already established himself as the leader - taking responsibility
    2. DMC making explosive plays
    3. MB looking really good and standing out running hard
    4. Walker running crisp routes, lost weight and getting better
    5. Huff breaking on balls and looking very comfy at FS
    6. Aso INT’g the first past thrown his direction against Walker/Walter. If thats not a good omen I don’t know what is.

    The not so good:

    1. Harris being “owned” by Trevor Scott (but big runs were made running left behind Harris)
    2. ORT still a question

Some real good camp info: http://www.sbreport.net/raider_news/008/133.html

  128. Raidermvp Says:

Has any thought if (T) Paul McQuistan can play LT?

  129. Terrapin Says:

More stuff: Arman Sheilds, by many accounts is looking really good. And Watkins is mentioned in one of the articles to look so good that he can challenge for 3rd WR. I don’t know man, Curry could be in trouble facing challenges all over from Carter, Watkins and Shields. His experience in the system gives him the edge.

  130. Al's Bedpan Attendant Says:

To go 10-6, we don’t need to shut down another teams run game completely. We only have to shut down the run at critical times such as 3rd and short, whent he other team is nursing the clock, goal line attempts, etc.

The team needs the O to produce points and leads early to make the other teams pass as well as run to catch up. I could care less if we give up 160 yrds to LT as long as we can stop him late in the 4th qtr to preserve a win. With the backs we have and the ZB scheme that is utilized by our quality run blockers, we should be the team that is killing the clock with a punishing run game late in the 4th quarter.

  131. Terrapin Says:

& T.Kelly was a beast inside! There’s just soo much positive signs coming out of camp …I just can’t wait to see it myself.

Why isn’t Jamarcuss 300 pounds, why is Kiffin still coaching and why did big name free agents sign with the Raiders in the offseason.

I think all you rumor mongering local sports writers, should have to explain why you lied to us the last few months about every aspect of our team. Pathetic losers!

666–The media (especially in the Bay Area) loves to dump on the Raiders and will print anything they can think of whether true or not. KNBR the only bay area sports station and forty whiner flag ship continuously spreads unconfirmed rumors virtually every day about the Raiders. I encourage everyone to email or call in to all the fu*king as*holes at KNBR. Murph and Mac, Gary Radnich, Tom Tolbert, Ralph Barbieri, Bob Fitzgerald and Rod Brooks (former Raider employee). All these guys are peices of sh*t and need to be told to stop their BS. Go to http://www.knbr.com Call in or email. RAIDER NATION

  141. vegas raider Says:

Hey Jerry, nice way of saying Javon sounds uneducated

  142. Al's Bedpan Attendant Says:

The Raiders are vilified by the media simply because they are so different from the rest of the NFL in that they don’t comment on stories and don’t go “off the record” as much as everyone else.

The media in general tends to take an entitlement position when it comes to news. They feel entitled to know the story and will blast anyone who doesn’t give them the story right away.

When looking at the way the Raiders are treated by the press, you see much more editorializing than the “just the facts” approach in which journalistic integrity is based upon. It is amazing to me that your average beat writer for the Raiders publishes op-ed pieces rather than news stories.

  143. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

All the speculation about Javon Walker being out of shape but the man shows up 8 lbs lighter and at 100%.

  144. Raider4life Says:

Bedpan—Being a life-long east bay resident I hear and see all this garbage everyday. People at KNBR and writers like Ann Killion of the Mercury News or Nancy Gay are usually shut out by the Raiders so they start making sh*t up just to stir the pot. The Raider are one of the few who close training camp to the public and very few players actually talk to the media. The only guys who ever really go out of their way to talk are the ones who are whining like Sapp and Lil Stui. Best thing to do is to give the middle finger salute to all the media.

  149. Al's Bedpan Attendant Says:

    Radier4life,

I rarely read the newspaper anymore and not just because of the bias. You used to be able to buy a paper because you knew the editor was going to put in stories that the readers wanted to read. Now, they put in whatever story fits the agenda. You are so right that they fabricate facts that back up whatever opinion they have.

They pick what they want the story to say and then search for facts, real and imagined, that back up the story idea they had. They don’t gather facts and then write the story.

  150. MaineRaida Says:

It will be interesting to see how the MBush saga plays out. Fargas was the RB buzz last year and D-Mac this year; and Bush seems like a quiet, reserved guy…wonder if he can rise above and capture his old magic, given the situation at hand.

  151. Terrapin Says:

OK, so I read some more blog work today and Burgess is apparently 8LBs heavier - Ryan wanted him to be. This is great news too. He should be even more stout against the run. Things are looking good in Raiderland. Now we just have to put it all together & win games.

  154. Blackholepriest Says:

All this bashing the media is going piss COW off you guy’s. He insist that what they have to say is accurate. And it’s the Raiders fault that they have to report such negativity.

Ths is why I was saying what I was saying prior to camp and was vilified by Dakota and others for pretending that everything was “perfect in Raiderland”.

Obviously nothing is perfect but I felt we were a lot closer than what fans were saying. As Fargas said “we know we have a lot of talent” now we just have to put it all together. That’s all I was trying to say.

This supposed stripping of Kiffin’s powers was all crap. He has been given as much power as most coaches in this league along with the talent that most caches DON”T have. When Russell gets his game on, this could be one of the most lethal offenses in the game.

And all the hue and cry about the defense as I have said many times is much ado about nothing. This defense has been improved talent wise. Nolw they just need to execute and make plays when those plays are there to be made.

You mark my words Tommy Kelly once fully healthy will be worth the money. I have said that B4 he was injured I thought he was playing at a very high level and I think you’ll see what I meant.

With our ability to score I’m not nearly as worried about this defense. We need to score early and late in games to win. That’s how you become a complete team. We have the ability to do that now. Instead of praying the defense holds to win we can just attack and give the defense points to work with. That’s called closing games out. This team by years end should be a threat to win beat anyone anywhere………….period.

  155. Raider4life Says:

Bedpan–Back in March KNBR reported that JaMarcus was 300+lbs. ESPN, NFL.com and everyone else ran with that story without even talk to Kiffin or JaMarcus. A guy even called in to say he actually talked to JaMarcus on a flight and said he was nowhere near that and they refuse to believe him. Only when JaMarcus was interviewed at OTA’s was the story put to rest. The same as*holes who are the morning hosts at KNBR had DMac on one day and then talk sh*t as soon as he is off. It’s no wonder that no Raider wanna talk to the media.

  156. Senile Kings' Aricept Says:

The L.A.Times has pretty much declared open warfare against the Raiders….F*** Thomas Bonk.

  157. Terrapin Says:

Things are looking positive in Raiderland. And to hear/see someone right T.Kelly looked like a beast out there is some of the best new you can receive (amoung other good news being reported). But what was your assessment of Harris out there?

  158. Raider4life Says:

I think the vast majority of media people, whether it be KNBR radio, ESPN, NFL.com, San Jose Mercury News or LA Times, they all make up sh*t about the Raiders because they can’t get any info out of the team. Sapp use to blabber on whenever anybody would put a mic in front of him. Gruden enjoyed being chuckie and all that came with it. Now guys like Lombardi, Sapp, Lil Stui and every other scorned employee are the only one opening their yaps to the media. Best thing to do is write, email or talk to as many of these aholes as possible and let them know we aint buying their BS.

  159. Coach on Wheels Says:

BHP - I’m not pissed off. I’m just wondering how the media should spin 4-12 to make the Raiders sound great?

Reporter: “The Raiders were 4-12 last year.”
    Raider blogger: “Hater!”

Reporter: “I was surprised at what Tommy Kelly got paid.”
    Raider Blogger: “Hater!”
T Keelly: “I was surprised (at what I got paid).”
    Tommy Kelly is a hater!

Yeah, I’m the irrational one. I think the team should actually win some games BEFORE the press reports how great they are. Others feel differently.

Read the S&B report and in the early going the DL of Burgess, Scott, Kelly and Edwards were all easilly blowing by the O-line in pass drills. Not to panic. Last year we had the same problem in preseason because the O-line isn’t cut blocking like they will against opponents.
Not to mention Defense always starts off with an advantage to open camp. When they get pads on we’ll see how the D-line holds up.

    Good start to camp.

  160. Ryan Says:

    Andrew’s mom,

I see you found the Live draft. Not interested in the Automated one?

Any chances we could get Jerry or one of the other NFL writers to join a league?

  161. Tonio Says:

COW… you’re post is undeniable… yet… even when we were successful … we didn’t get good pub… it was still a hesitant spin… same for the A’s in my opinion… East bay teams have had great successes over the years…and yet would still get less positive pub than SF teams…

  162. Terrapin Says:

Good point COW. That does alleviate some concerns of Harris. I do remember stories of the Oline getting their asses handed to them last camp - but they didn’t have their full arsenal at their disposure.

  163. Blackholepriest Says:

The mod is wiping out all my reponses

  164. Blackholepriest Says:

It’s not about how great we are. Simply report that facts, how hard is that? Write about how great we are!

Waht the hell are you talking about? I’m talking about objective reporting instead of a bunch of speculation and crap.

  165. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

COW, That was an immature and simplistic response. Acknowledge the facts. Most media outlets went way too far reporting on several rumors, and never had named sources to support them. They clearly rely on their peers willingness to accept rumor as likely fact when it comes to the Raiders. Do you or do you not accept the following as poor journalistic performance:

    > JMAC is 300+ (since shown to be BS)
    > Davis gave Kif a letter to sign (still no source for this)
    > Kiff wants Ryan fired (has anyone said this on record? no)
    > Kiff is wearing no Raider gear, thus wants out (Kiffin himself has said he was always in).
    > Al Davis was recklessly overspending to the tune of $250 mil (contract FACTS show that number to be wildly exaggerated since the last big money years of a contract are rarely paid, exemplified by Lamont’s $4.7 mil this year).
    > Asomugha wont show up, and this shows Al can’t take care of business (Aso DID show up says there was no animosity in contract talks).

COW, where do you stand?!?! We are not bashing the media for repeatedly noting the Raiders poor record of late. For instance, no one calls Jerry a hater, and Jerry writes a lot about the factual shortcomings of the last few seasons. Haters in the media run with UNSOURCED rumors and call them facts, and then never admit they were unethical in their boased coverage.

  166. Blackholepriest Says:

Thanks Bo, that’s what i was trying to say but it was erased.

COW knows exactly what we’re talking about but he wants to play dumb.

  167. Thec Says:

NATION what is up? Funny we are having this topic as I was thinking about this yesterday, and driving to work this morning.

We the members of the NATION follow this team religiously. we know more about this team than 99.999
percent of all fans. the only people that know more are of course the team itself and management. I would be willing to say that most media folks dont even know who are draft picks were, only save DMAC. Why dont thet reseacrh what is going on with the RAIDERS it is simple they feel they dont need to because we have been losing for so long they “assume” that we will be business as usual. That is why all of them tow the same tagline to paraphrase “the RAIDERS suck”. do I beleive that a bias exist yes to a certain extent but until we start winning and winning often we will get the same thing over and over again.

We are in the minority of a few people who have actually done research and disected this team. How i manage the negative is to not spin it but look at it from this perspective, WE WILL SURPRISE A LOT OF TEAMS.
So I actually thank the media for what they are doing.

When the team truly becomes relevant the media will turn, but when they turn will we turn from them or embrace them? If it were up to me they would get the middle finger news.

  168. Toozfan Says:

It’s US against the World, as always.
That is the thing that has always bound Raider fans, and outsiders/haters will never understand.
The rise to the top is on!
    Go raiders!

don’t feed the trolls lurking on this site….

  169. Tonio Says:

Coach seems unusually frustrated… He usually has solid info… which doesn’t make as much sense with we’re just starting camp…and should be the most optimistic.

  170. Johnny Rebel Says:

Bash the media, they derserve it. Especially the pathetic Nancy Gay who writes only when she has something from another outlet to write about. Why not get off your lazy azz and do some real reporting Nancy, maybe Davis will trade Jordan to the whiners and the Raiders can put him out of his misery during combined camp drills and Nancy can be releaved he is in camp and not being hardballed by the Raiders. Like she really cares about Jordan anyway, she just wants to stir the pot about the Raiders because Al put set her straight long ago.

  171. Bob Marley Says:

Forget about all the positive reports from Camp.

Tim Kawakami and Lowell Cohn were there and both report of an outstanding start of Camp for the Raiders.

But….they have already told us that it´s not real and it won´t last.

    So there, let it go.

Point is, don´t worry about the media, they will always have their agenda and they are certainly hoping for the worst, but it´s up to the whole Raiders organization to prove them wrong.

  172. Bob Marley Says:

We should not get carried away after 1 practice.

But we should feel very good about:

    - The team has moved on from the off-season drama (real, not real or somewhere in the middle), by all accounts the players and the Coaches looked excited, positive and ready to work.

    - Javon Walker and Tommy Kelly are healthy and practicing, wether they look good or bad it´s irrelevant at this point, those 2 have talent but health was a concern, so far so good.

    - Burgess putting on 8 pounds at Ryan´s request is good news, specially when he was still blowing by people.

    - Nnamdi on Camp and already working together with the 3 new starters on the Secondary.

That´s plenty of good new for Day 1.

  175. Bob Marley Says:

  177. Johnny Rebel Says:

  178. Thec Says:

We know what we have the media has no clue as it is evident by the reporting. Let them continue to report non truths.

I doubt that NFL teams are buying the media line. As an example based on our offense you cant defend the RAIDERS the way you defended them last year. why?
They have way too many offensive weopons that need to be accounted for. Question can the mediots, bloggers, fans of other teams tell you who and what these weopons are. I bet most of the media cant tell you what college MBUS played for.

    The NATION gets it.
    Michale Smith Gets it.
    Media clueless.
    Fans from other teams clueless.

  181. Bob Marley Says:

The thing to remember is, everyone, is that the media didn’t exactly lie about Davis demanding Kiffin’s resignation. Or, at least, we don’t know for certain. The report was that Davis demanded him to resign, and that Kiffin declined to. This could still be on, as far as we know. And remember, Kiffin didn’t outright deny it, either. And, our drafting and acquisitions since that story broke? They didn’t look like Kiffin choices, to me. But that’s a matter of opinion. Of course, there’s only one way to find out. We have to just wait and see. Personally? I think this is Kiffin’s last year.

if the Raider are successful this season. It will only be because of Kiffin and the players. It will be made very clear that the success is in spite of Al, not because he signed the right coach and brought in the right player.

If we go 4 and 12 again. It’s all Al’s Fault.

It’s BS, but that is what will be written.

  192. Johnny Rebel Says:

Then Ryan says he will resign and somehow the media spins Kiffin wants to fire him just like the under armour spin at the senior bowl, more b.s.

  193. Tonio Says:

will we cut block against the niners in practice???

  194. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Kiffin admitted yesterday that when he took the job that it was usually not a long term position. So he went about his job improving that which he could. Not focussing about job security.

  195. Raider4life Says:

If Anquan Bolden really wants out of AZ I say give them first round pick and either Fargas or Curry. Both are expendable and Bolden is a top 5 receiver.

  196. 408RAIDER Says:

I like real boobies Dakota you got any Selma Hayak SP?

  197. Dave Alvis Says:

    I believe it’s 9-11 AM and 7-9 PM

  198. El Dirty Says:

    Raider4life

    I agree

  199. El Dirty Says:

    Thanks Dave

  200. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Marley, I hear what you’re saying. Frankly, I think the Kiffin story was true, too. But I hate the media so much that I always go against them, by default. I feel that since Al Davis has accomplished so much in his lifetime, that the press should be spinning FOR him, not AGAINST him. Yes, we’re 19-61 for the past 5 years. MR won’t stop reminding us. But why can’t the press talk about Davis’s 3 Super Bowl victories? Why can’t they talk about the fact that we went to the Super Bowl just 5 years ago? There are a lot of similarities between our current team and those great teams of the past. This team will easily win 10 games this year and will certainly be a SB contender next season. That’s what the press should be talking about. Because those are the facts!

  201. Johnny Rebel Says:

He has a 3 year contract to right the ship with 2 optional years if he does well, nothing long term till he proves himself, sounds like a good deal to me, making 4+ million a year at 32 years old.

  202. El Dirty Says:

    408

    THIS IS MY GIRL

  203. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

    El Dirty,
Salma is available. She just broke off her engagement.
    Go for it!!! lol

  204. Dakota Says:

    408,

They do not have to be real boobies per say, I just don’t like it when they look like two saran wrapped turtles trying to break through skin.

    This is more like it:

  205. Johnny Rebel Says:

Now the media is starting to back peddle because there is no substance to support the rumors and the season is about to start. J. Walker running fast, precise routes? who would have thunk it.

  206. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Good point Marley, in post 181. Kiffin also said “where theres fire…”.

But the media should have said it was rumored and that they don’t really know. Instead many reporters predicted he’d be gone months ago.

And where was the follow up when Kiffin stuck around and seemed enthused after the draft?

The point is, the media knew very little and acted like they knew a lot, based on their bias and past Davis behavior. Al runs a closed operation, and they resent the challenge they face in doing their job. Their editors should hold their ass to the fire: No published source = no story.

  207. Raider4life Says:

Reb–No way Kiff is making 4+ mil. Al never pays head coaches anywhere near the going rate. That’s why Chuckie bolted cuz he wanted to get paid and have some control.

  208. Dakota Says:

    per se…excuse me

  209. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

200 is MR, not me. Nice try loser troll.

  210. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

    Johnny Rebel,
You’re right about the 3 yr deal but the 3rd yr, next year is a club option and your yearly is over double. Still a good sum.

  211. El Dirty Says:

Have you guys seen Ice-T’s Wife?

  212. 408RAIDER Says:

Dirty nice 1 any full body shots she has a great A$$…

Dakota I hear ya man.. nothing wrong with that

  213. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

    Those are real too! lol

When do we get some new Raider news Jerry?

  214. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Basically, the press should be spinning FOR us, not AGAINST us. Al Davis’s body of work is undeniable. He won 3 Super Bowls. His lifetime record is awesome. And, he gave a completely unknown Jon Gruden the opportunity of a lifetime. Nobody had ever heard of Jon Gruden until Al Davis put him on the Oakland Raiders’s sideline. N
