Training camp, Day 3
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, July 26th, 2008 at 7:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from the Raiders’ lone practice Saturday:
– It was probably to be expected after the aerial display featuring JaMarcus Russell the previous evening, but the Raiders came back to earth Saturday afternoon in a snappy practice that was wrapped up in under an hour and 40 minutes.
Things were much more difficult for the near-rookie, as Russell mixed in some nice balls with several that were broken up and nearly intercepted, as well as one badly thrown pass late over the middle that free safety Michael Huff read perfectly and snared on a dive.
Coach Lane Kiffin said he was more interested in watching Russell convert the routine plays than the sort of Star Wars show he put on Friday night.
“We’re not going to coach those special throws that he makes where he’s running over there and he throws back and makes those great throws. That’s who he is and very few people can do that,” Kiffin said. “But those happen one time a game, maybe two times. We’ve got to get him to do everything right, the little things, the little completions and the timing of everything.
“That’s all the stuff that wows the fans and people watching but that’s not what makes you a good quarterback. A good quarterback plays with great discipline, he takes care of the ball and he throws things on time. We’re going to have to get that going with him. He’s continuing to improve on it. We’re giving him a lot of reps. We’re wearing him out on purpose for conditioning, not just his arm but his body.”
Said Russell about what was important: “The small detail things. When you pay close attention to that, then things will be better for you instead of being Superman all the time.”
– During one seven-on-seven sequence, Russell was nearly intercepted by DeAngelo Hall while looking for Johnnie Lee Higgins along the sideline _ a pass that could have been a defensive touchdown. His next pass, intended for tight end Tony Stewart, was tipped in the air and nearly intercepted by Sam Williams.
– Two plays later, Marques Tuiasosopo, who also threw well Friday night, was intercepted by linebacker Robert Thomas on a pass intended for Jonathan Holland.
– In a team sequence, Russell fared better when on back-to-back throws. Drew Carter made a difficult, physical catch with Chris Johnson draped all over him on a 12-yard out, and Russell followed it up with a touch lob for 20-plus yards to tight end John Madsen in stride.
– Early in practice, with the running backs breaking out of one drill and heading toward another at the horn, Kiffin threw a high pass which nearly caught an unsuspecting Darren McFadden right in the face guard, with McFadden reaching up at the last second to knock down.
At the conclusion of practice, Kiffin was talking to an assistant coach only to be nearly struck by a Shane Lechler skyscraper. It was caught by Rashad Baker.
“Was that Shane or the JUGS machine?,” Kiffin asked as he went to the podium to speak to reporters. When told it was Lechler, Kiffin said, “Don’t think he didn’t do that on purpose.”
– Rookie receiver Arman Shields, who has had some impressive moments through the early sessions, incurred the wrath of offensive coordinator Greg Knapp for a half-speed route.
“C’mon rook. Break on it,” Knapp barked. “When you break on it, you might want to go toward the ball and not off the field. You’ve got to focus when you’re tired.”
– Running backs coach Tom Rathman was instructing running backs how to stop in their tracks in the middle of a zone then break outside to get open underneath. He used Justin Griffith to demonstrate how it was done before turning to second-year fullback Oren O’Neal and McFadden.
O’Neal ran the route well enough, but didn’t look up in time and Russell’s pass glanced off his hands.
“Gotta have it, `O,’ ” Rathman said.
Next was McFadden, who ran into the middle and then peeled off without stopping first.
“No, sit first. You’ve got to sit first,” Rathman said.
– Left tackle Kwame Harris missed practice with a sore lower back and is expected back Sunday morning. In his place, Paul McQuistan, who has been seeing time at left guard, moved outside to tackle. Also playing left tackle were Seth Wand and Mario Henderson, who is competing with Cornell Green on the right side.
Raiders tackles have had difficulty slowing the charge of Derrick Burgess (almost always on the left side, a few snaps on the right) and Kalimba Edwards from the outside. Kiffin conceded it is that area where Harris will need to get up to speed.
“He’s been a better run player for us so far,” Kiffin said. “We got some things in the pass protection going back to the left side — he hasn’t been there for a while — that we’ve got to work out, that (Tom) Cable’s working on with him. We got a lot of hopes for him, and we’re going to need him.”
– The Raiders appear to be running the ball well and crisply with Justin Fargas, McFadden and Michael Bush, although until they face a team in a different uniform, it will be tough to tell how good they really are.
– Linemen who false start have been told to take laps around the field, with McQuistan and Brandon Robb among those to make the circuit Saturday.
– Rookie end Trevor Scott has had some difficulty disengaging and making his presence felt a pass rusher. A converted tight end, Scott is listed at 6-foot-5, 255 pounds and actually looks smaller out of uniform.
One one play, with Louis Rankin breaking free, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan yelled, “C’mon Trevor, you’ve got to hold that edge!”
“It’s definitely something that takes getting used to,” Scott said. “Coming from college to the NFL, there’s really no comparison. Guys are just phenomenal, and the O-linemen have great feet, and that’s where coach (Keith) Millard is really telling me to hone in on my techniques and trust my technique and have my technique beat theirs. Use agility and quickness and try to get around them.”
– Huff, sometimes invisible while lost in among the bigger players at strong safety, has been conspicuous not only with his playmaking, but his enthusiasm for playing free safety.
“I’m out there running around, having fun, make Gibril (Wilson) take on all the tackles and guards and fullbacks and all that,” Huff said. “I can stay back there and make plays.”
Huff is doing a good job reading the offense, but is having a hard time figuring out his weight pattern. He said he tried to bulk up to last year and finished the season at a skeletal 193 pounds. Now that he’s a free safety, he is up to 205.
“I know it’s strange, but I feel quick out there, real fast,” Huff said.
– If Tommy Kelly is as good as the Raiders seem to think he is, that $18.125 million guaranteed won’t seem so bad after the $22 million guaranteed Glenn Dorsey got from the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was just a day or two ago that Chiefs exec Carl Peterson was spouting his usual nonsense about Dorsey’s contract demands, only to cave in and pay what the market demanded he pay.
– Kelly has been putting in overtime on the cardio machines after practice, working on getting his weight down. He has been one of the last players to leave the field house.
– Safety Greg Wesley (back spasms) and linebacker Grant Irons (hamstring) missed practice and are day-to-day. Defensive end Fred Wakefield (flu-like symptoms) was back at practice and even played a few snaps inside at defensive tackle.
– If Al Davis is the kind of guy who worries about these things, he hates the idea of LaMont Jordan joining New England, where he could join Randy Moss and show up the Raiders by putting up big numbers, and even warned his agent to make sure he went somewhere else.
More logically, Davis is pleased to see Jordan wind up in a place where he is buried behind Lawrence Maroney and Kevin Faulk, putting him only one rung above the Fargas-McFadden-Bush mountain he faced in Oakland.
– The Raiders have a double session today with the first practice at 9 a.m. and the second at 7 p.m.

ok…so maybe the o-line will be adequate, but if harris is underperforming AND complaining of a sore back already, i think it’s time to start combing the league for someone’s overpaid lt with maybe a year or two left in him. let’s not be thinking about this at the start of the preseason, please!!!

From the SFGate article on today’s practice…
THE BAD
** Don’t blame bad officiating for the offensive line’s woes: there aren’t any refs at practice yet. The line had another three acknowledged false starts, with Cornell Green guilty on at least two others. Some if it has to do with the constant rotating of centers, but Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said this has to get better: just wait until there’s crowd noise.
** Speaking of the offensive line, the pass protection struggled mightily for a second straight day. Russell was forced to scramble out of a collapsed pocket four times and was touched for sacks another three times. The tackle play has been particularly problematic.
THE MUNDANE
** Left tackle Kwame Harris sat out with a lower back injury one day after a terrible practice (three false starts, multiple sacks allowed). he was replace by Paul McQuistan, who had just as much trouble.
……………………………….
Russell’s struggles will be directly linked to the o-line. Maybe Harris will learn how to block before the season begins.

harris sounds like a role-playing back-up. we have too much potential, and too good a qb, to be satisfied playing these kinds of games with the lt position and our qb’s safety. we can trust in cable, but not expect him to make a “silk purse out of a sow’s ear”. come on, al, let’s get serious here. and where is tommy trojan, who reassured me that we could blow off the line until late in the draft and still have a good line because of the “line depth” of this particular draft? (he got mcfadden). was he some kind of enemy agent?
July 26th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
I don’t necessarily post all to often on here, but I believe that we need to be really concerned about out left tackle situation. JMac is going to get crushed if Harris does not start blocking. I don’t care what kind of running game we can get out there, by the way it should be awesome, Harris does not start blocking it will be all for nothing. We need a more balanced offense this year to really be able to win games.
July 26th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Harris better learn how to block before the season starts.
July 26th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
maybe harris will grow into his position as some have suggested. but if he doesn’t? all i’m saying is, we need a plan B and, at this point, we don’t have one…
July 26th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
gallery has to be better than harris at lt. i have not seen much film on harris. but from the way it sounds we might as have al davis in there blocking at lt.
July 26th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
they still cant cut… harris needs 2 man up in cable i trust….
July 26th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
This maybe a dumb question….But what is the big difference between run blocking and pass blocking? How can a guy excel at one and not be able to perform the other?
July 26th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
cable’s efforts were great last year, but he’s still human…
July 26th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
ctraidersfan, JMac is author of this awesome blog, I can’t imagine how bad Harris would have to be for Jmac to get crushed!

i questioned bringin in harris before. im questioning it even more now.
July 26th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
JS: so did i, thinking that o-line is what we needed in the draft. since we got mcfadden, i’m in support of him. but i really hoped that by now, after off-season activities, etc. harris would not be such a glaring weakness, just a question mark.
July 26th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

July 26th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
The difference between run blocking and pass blocking. For the line, it depends the scheme(spell check). The system we use, the zone blocking scheme, the backside of the line is assisgned to an area, not a particular man. So who ever tries to penetrate the line, is picked up by the guard and tackle. The Strong side will usually have their own assignments to follow depending on the play and defence they run against. This is run blocking in the zone blocking system from what im familiar with. Pass protection, the line men step back in a 2 point stance and use their hands to slow the rush and provide as much time as possible.

July 26th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
The Kifin quote about Russell making those big plays and long thrwos once or twice a game is the same thing he said before.
Good for him. i think its more about resource mangement than all out assault with the super weapons to win.
Wisely they see predicated on controling the clock and the game.
BUT if necessary, its good to know we have a better chance of making those big plays now when we have to.
Awesome!~
If y’all get bored, made sum updates and as usualy, fresh material at http://www.raidernationstation.com
Finished the Defensive side in the “Silver and the Black” series.
Last article is on the spot with the most to improve. The DT’s.
Also new stuff on how the Broncos 12th overall Ryan Clady may be signed, but he’s no lock for Left Tackle.
At least right away…
Hope you all are having a great week end and try not to get too erratic out there tonight!

wouldn’t hat prove everybody wrong about Al keeping him?
I really don’t think it’ll happen, but it would be great for the D…
July 26th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
There are some concerns on the O’Line and it sounds like Kiff is aware of them and is trying to resolve it. Play action and a quick release should help The Pass blocking.
If they cant sure up the tackle that means that you cant release the RBs as an outlet. They have to stay in and block. Considering this I thought that its interesting that they seem to be doing a lot of practice with the RBs pass blocking.
Where is the Raider Nation Celebration?
July 26th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Repost:
Regarding internet rumor-mongers…
Don’t want to name names, but a multi-name-using poseur who’s initials are IWILL (now IWON’T) happened to write in here the other night that Javon Walker had tested positive for ganj (among other bad news). He also said Anquan Boldin was coming for a visit the next day (one of my personal pre-Draft dreams!). Of course, nothing in his post was true, he only wanted to stir the pot (pun intended).
Proving once again…not only is he not a true fan of the S & B, but he isn’t even close to being a real “insider.” One thing’s for sure — if an injury (or any major issue) were to befall a player for the Raiders, Jerry McD or Jason Jones would be all over it, and we would’ve heard of it through more respected sources than AOL message boards.
Don’t believe the hype until it’s confirmed true!
July 26th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
The pass protection is troubling. I saw enough of Harris while at SF to have my doubts about him coming over. Lets be clear, he has always been a serviceable run blocker, Frank Gores numbers will give you insight to what we can expect from him in that area. This may be the reason that Cable was so high on him. Think about it. Cable is a run blocking line specialist. Passing is a secondary priority. I put my reservations aside because Cable vouched for him so hard. But, over the past few days we have been reading updates of multiple players beating him out on the line. This should bother you because besides Burgess we have no pass rush. If our guys are blowing by him what is going to happen when we play SD,NE,BAL,TB who have a higher caliber of talent on the defensive line?
July 26th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Raider Nation Celebration is at McAfee Collisieum 11am for season ticket holders, 12 for everyone else. Its free this year. Its august 10th, a sunday.

July 26th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Belichek obviously remembers Jordan from the Jets. Just the spot for him to get his mojo back up, but he still has to make the team. Maroney as #1 ballcarrier, Jordan spelling him, and Faulk for third-down scatback work. Effective combination, on paper. Interesting to see how “Justin McFadbush” will stack up against it, worth watching.
I KNEW Jordan was gonna land on his feet. I really do think he gave us what he had, probably tried to do more than he was capable of.
July 26th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
no need to hate on jordan…he was a raider now he’s not…i think Al does a diservice to his team when he hangs guys out to dry like he does. See Marcus Allen ( although I agree that Bo was the guy to give the rock to) His hopes of striking a deal for Jordan were only that Hopes….do the guy right Al….and perhaps other guys would not be wary of joinin the Silver and Black.
Good Luck Lamont thanks for yer services
Carry on Nation
July 26th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
We should play a game; Who’ll be the next Jordan? Basically, who’ll be the next player that Al thought would be a great reclamation project but turned out to be garbage, and was scapegoated for the team’s failures? Toss up between Javon and DeAngelo, if you ask me.
July 26th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
I know we sign lots of guys…. i.e. this off season….but the point remains…treat guys well throughout their stay with the team and the karma comes back to ya….stickin to guys does not sit well with me
Can’t wait to stomp shanarat in week one
July 26th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
shanarat has karma coming his way. his players suck and hes taken chances on bad guys. that will come bakc to haunt him.
July 26th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
my ONLY worry…… harris pass blocking on the left side…..
p.s. how is Michael Bush doing Jerry.
I cant wait to see McFadden and Bush in the backfield at the same time!
July 26th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
If the practices are closed how are the reporters getting all this detailed info?
July 26th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
There’s a limited number of press passes to let some reporters watch practice. As for Jerry, normally he has to watch thru a rip in the black tarp until Raider security comes and makes him leave.

MR, it looks like just you and I are on the blogg right now…should we talk about your psychological problems?
Why don’t you begin by telling me about your first childhood memory…
July 26th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
What was that MR, your first memory is of this:

Well, that explains your current fixation on Steve Young.
July 26th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

Well, MR, why don’t we move on? Let’s discuss your first sexual fantasy.
Oh, that was a fast answer:
http://www.sf49ertickets.com/shop/images/49ers_home.jpg
Well, you seem a little confused about which direction you were going back then…maybe we should discuss the current state of your relationships?
July 26th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
Oh, I see, well, MR, I think in this day and age it is somewhat accepted to begin most of your relationships via the internet…

…especially in the Bay Area.
July 26th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
So MR, I now understand some of your issues, but I would hate to prematurely diagnose you, can we talk a little more first? Okay, good.
Now, we both agree that you are a somewhat uptight individual that has a certain amount of resentment; can you tell the first day you realized you resented your life?
Oh, it was when you realized your lover moved away? Where did he go? Oh, Philadelphia…did you miss him badly?

I see, well, I am sure that he misses you too. Sometimes the best relationships are destroyed by jobs…that can’t be helped, and you need to let go of that relationship.
July 26th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
MR, I think we have made significant progress on this, our first day of counseling. Remember what I said earlier, moving out of your mother’s basement may make you feel more in control of your life, and emotional stability may follow.

Well, after you repair the robot, you really should move out of her basement.

whats up with jerry one freaking post today.?? wtf
July 27th, 2008 at 12:04 am
this just in…..: lamont jordan rushes for 1000 yards as a 2nd string back for the patriots
July 27th, 2008 at 12:10 am
Dakota, do you honestly think the “mother’s basement” thing is funny outside of this little retard circle jerk here? Do you think one casual observer to this blog is going to read that and say, “wow. This Dakota guy said that MR lives in his mother’s basement! This guy’s great! I’ve got to email this link to everybody..”?!?
July 27th, 2008 at 12:16 am
Dakota, if you can come up with one put down directed at me that’s at least at a high school graduate’s intellect, I’ll leave forever. The mother’s basement, you need counseling jabs are about 7th grade. So you’ve got a ways to go. You need to exercise your brain just like it’s a muscle, dakota, or it will rot as well. I know you older rednecks exercise neither. So this will be tough for you. But give it a try.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:22 am
Just got back from Hunting Beach, had a great time with the family and friends celebrating my grandson’s birthday. But reading your postings 73 thru 80 were just awesome…in humor but also in the deep insight you’re providing us about MR. Know I have a better understanding of him and I’ll just continue to stroll on buy this stupid comments, his hate and his venom against the Raiders. Thanks again, Dakota. Go Raiders.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Funny you say that, I just got done doing exactly that!!
“This guy’s great! I’ve got to email this link to everybody”
July 27th, 2008 at 12:32 am
Maybe we should use next years first round pick for an upgrade at left tackle. I’ll admit I’m worried. Not only is Harris not performing but he’s missing practice with lower back pains…they don’t go away that easy. Help.

The most common denominator between all sports based blogs is the disdain felt towards posters like MR.
When we fans are getting excited about upcoming season, degenerates like MR are feeling glum. Because of the downward spiral his life is on caused by his hidden homosexual tendencies towards coach gruden and his innate desire to cause harm to small animals.

Thanks for the additional insight, I’m starting to see the big picture more clearly in regards to MR.
Good nite and have a super tomorrow. I know you’ll have a super September 8, 2008 when we stomp Shanarat and his donkeys on Monday night nation TV, ESPN. The whole world is going to take note that we’re back and back to stay.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:42 am
Riverside Raider has a beautiful day celebrating his grandson’s birthday, then can’t wait to get home, onto his computer, to discuss the troll MR. And you guys say I focus on the negative? Talk football, idiots.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:42 am
Looks good - solid competition across the board and I really get the sense that not only is the energy is up but the talent is there as well. Looks like we’re firing on all cylinders right off the bat which is great news. I knew last year would be a learning curve type of year but I though 8-8 was realistic. If Kiffin can get this team to “finish” as he repeated almost every post-game press conference, this schedule puts us in the playoffs (and easily, if I may be so bold).
July 27th, 2008 at 12:47 am
Do you guys realize what I’m going to do to you in here if Denver kills us in week one? I predicted myself it would be a 7 point game that could go either way. So if it’s near that range, I’ll zip it. But if Denver kills us, oh…let’s just say you guys are going to suffer two agonizing defeats that week. It’s sad, but it’s gotten to that point. With fans like me, it’s a win/win situation. If we win, cool. Raiders won. If they lose, we get to come in here and just annihilate the obnoxious kool aid drinkers who made insane 31-0 predictions, and bashed anyone who didn’t agree. It’s going to be fun, guys. That’s all I’m gonna say.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:51 am
Jedi, do you honestly think Kiffin will be here after the bye? After we’re 1-3, at best? After Rob Ryan goes after him on the sideline on live television (it runs in the family)?
July 27th, 2008 at 12:52 am
Too much turmoil for the Oakland Raiders to win more than 4 games. And, it could be less because Kiffin will be gone at the bye and this team will really be lost.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:54 am

so there we have it…
MR announcing that he will punish this blog and any raider fan who described any confidence in the raiders vs the donkeys on MNF…
my prediction is that even if the raiders win by 14 MR will still trash the raiders…
even if Kiffin lasts the season and becomes coach of the year, MR will still be here trashing Davis…
MR is not a fan… he is the Cockroach King…
which has been his ambition all along…

July 27th, 2008 at 6:26 am
Guys, you’re looking waaayyy too deep into what David White wrote. For one, I don’t think he even witnessed the Friday night’s session, which Jason Jones wrote this regarding Harris:
“Harris is looking more comfortable at left tackle. He won’t be confused with Walter Jones, but his pass protection during drills this evening looked better than in the morning practice.”
To be fair, Jones also mentioned that Harris false started once during this practice.
If David did witness the night session he surely did not write about it on his blog entry, which leads me to believe he didn’t see it. So his words were more tailored towards Fridays morning session, during with the Oline and offense in general got their asses handed to them, in conjunction with Saturdays solo session.
Harris didn’t practice on Saturday due to his back so don’t blame him McQs errors. Moreover, players get injured all the time - so don’t go judging the guy just because he sat out 1 practice due to injury/discomfort. Its practice for crying out loud. Surely, he would’ve played in a real game.
July 27th, 2008 at 6:32 am
I think that Zack Miller will help keep the pass rush honest,
July 27th, 2008 at 6:36 am
I hope not Fat Daddy Groove (damn thats a funny name as I typed hit ..got a laugh out of it). I want these boys to do their jobs upfront and allow Miller to go free. If they do, its that much harder for teams to stop us. Even Kiffin admitted that while Miller had a stellar year last year he could’ve had a Spectacular year if we weren’t forced to keep him in on blocking (over 10 more catches at the very least). We want to free Miller.
July 27th, 2008 at 6:41 am
Its sunday!! All dam day!!
I have to go work on my house
But I cannot wait for the three headed monster to tack on 250 + yards monday night .
I predict the rat named scatashan will be on thin ice after we run up the score. Then he will be fired after we light them up in the rematch.
That will be the game where jrock throws 4 tds and goes over 300 yards passing.

July 27th, 2008 at 7:20 am
The thing the chefs will learn about Dorsey is that he got beat up in the sec playing so much. He will be in and out of the lineup for this or that, all year.

Gents way up above took what David White wrote in his blog and assumed Harris is flat out stinking up the joint. I’m saying David White’s point of view may be skewed b/c he MAY have missed a practice session. If he only saw Friday mornings session (and the previous days session) and Saturdays solo session, he’s missing valuable information about Friday nights session. Therefore, his conclusions may not be absolutely correct - hence slanted - and juxtapose to that of what Jones wrote of Harris.
Now I’m not saying Harris is performing great. But from what I gather from reading multiple sources on each practice he may be improving. And there is also one crucial point missing here: They cannot cutblock in practice.
July 27th, 2008 at 7:24 am
Dear Johnny Rotten…
no need for me to read your link before I comment…
This is a quote from Jerrys last entry…
“– Left tackle Kwame Harris missed practice with a sore lower back and is expected back Sunday morning. In his place, Paul McQuistan, who has been seeing time at left guard, moved outside to tackle. Also playing left tackle were Seth Wand and Mario Henderson, who is competing with Cornell Green on the right side.”
Let me state my claim again! Harris is the STARTER!
but dear johnny, i could say to you read and REMEMBER what Jerry writes… no need to other links stating the exact same thing… is there?

Harris is soooo much better in the run-game than McQ so Harris will be starter… no doubt about that… only a season ending injury keeps him out of the lineup…

La Milicia all you want to do is make contradictions and argue with anyone and everyone that disagrees with you. Just because you say Harris will be the starter don’t make it so. I never said Harris would not be the starter at first, but fact is McQuistan is backing him up and looks good and Kiffin is leaving him on the left side this year. Now I’d say there is the possibility he would start if Harris stumps his toe.
July 27th, 2008 at 7:33 am
And dear ole Jerry forgot to add Kiffin said he is keeping McQuistan on the left side if he can.
July 27th, 2008 at 7:34 am
So read before you attack LMN. You can’t read a post in less than one second which is about how fast you responded to mine before reading the link.
July 27th, 2008 at 7:38 am
Johnny…
no that is not my intentions… you barked at me remember, you said I should read you link, when it said the exact same thing as Jerry’s piece…
I love to argue, especilly when is worth the time…. but to me you seems like the boy who screamed wolf… because of one practice where harris is out with a lower backinjury you are sure that Harris is a goner ?!?!
we will run the sun black, and Harris is our best run blocker, so I don’t see any logic in putting him back, he lacks some in the Pass-game i agree with that, but Harris is the starter in week one… you can go make a bet on that…
July 27th, 2008 at 7:39 am
There you go again manipulating the post, I never said Harris was a goner lol.
July 27th, 2008 at 7:40 am

July 27th, 2008 at 7:59 am
that wasn’t my best sentence…. hmm
July 27th, 2008 at 8:00 am

July 27th, 2008 at 8:01 am

July 27th, 2008 at 8:02 am
LMN, don’t worry about your sentence structure; sadly, it is better than most poster in here.
July 27th, 2008 at 8:02 am
Jerry Rebel..
true, I just think you put way tooo much in that…
our main dish this year is bread and butter, so we will run all day… Harris is our best run-game lineman so to me its pretty obvious that he’ll be the starter, plus that Cable said that is was his guy, personal pride and stuff, Cable will make Harris a starter…
McQuistan is an okay backup, and in 2 years time he might be a okay starter… but not yet.. - thats is just how i see it.. and I think that most reports we will see from camp will be negative when it comes to Harris, because most want us to fail, making gold of rocks.
July 27th, 2008 at 8:03 am

which fantasy league does you guys use?
July 27th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Rebel
yeah and he was still the 2nd choice.. thats my point, he isn’t good enough to be a starter, he started because Green got injured… and Green wasn’t that good, so when Mcquistan needs an injury to get PT (thanks K-rock) its a good sign you’re not ready to be a 16game starter…
thats my point…. I like the guy, as a backup, and I think a year or two would do him good, then he might be starter material…

I wouldn´t get too worried about Kwame Harris just yet, it´s been 2 practices under a new system and at a position he hasn´t played in a few years. No one should have been expecting glowing reviews from day one, it´ll take some time.
July 27th, 2008 at 8:54 am
I still think we should make an offer to the Bills for disgruntled LT Jason Peters. Whatever it takes…1st and a 3rd, 1st and a 3rd and a 3rd in 2010…I would trade quite a bit for a franchise LT.
July 27th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Dakota
I would love that too, 26 yr. old All-Pro Left Tackles are extremely rare, which is why I don´t see him going anywhere.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:00 am
If you listen to Kiffins PC he seems very confident that they’ll get Harris there.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:00 am
One can dream…
July 27th, 2008 at 9:02 am
And on that same subject, I was looking at some of the prospects for the 09 Draft, there seems to be nice quality and depth at the OT position, if Kwame can´t cut it and assuming we pick somewhere between 10 and 20 we could get one next year.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:02 am
Jason Peters was an undrafted rookie free agent…now he is a 26 year old all-pro LT…
sounds like a movie script
July 27th, 2008 at 9:06 am
There seems to be plenty of quality at DL too. What you are not gonna find, so far, is a McFadden type of weapon.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Al Woods DT LSU
July 27th, 2008 at 9:13 am
I know I just said I wouldn´t worry about Kwame´s first 2 practices, so it´s the same deal here…but what the hell….it´s better than read that he was a monster…
“Rookie defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey wasn’t a standout at his first practice. At times, he wasn’t even standing. Brian Waters tossed Dorsey to the ground in a one-on-one pass rush drill. Waters later shoved Dorsey aside to create a hole for Larry Johnson in a running drill.”
July 27th, 2008 at 9:15 am

Yeah, I´d love either of Dorsey´s former teammates, Woods and DE Tyson Jackson who´s a big guy able to play the run and the pass. They may go Top 10 though, I´m hoping they´ll be out of reach for us.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:28 am
Dell, Milicia
Good to see you join Mista´s league, should be fun…what is it that you don´t get Milicia?.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Is it too risky to only take 1 QB or is that normal in a live draft?
July 27th, 2008 at 9:37 am
It´s amazing that LSU´s Front 7 from last year is likely to end up with 4 first Round picks, maybe 3 top 10. In addition to Dorsey being a top 5 pick, DT Woods and DE Jackson have top 10 potential and LB Daryl Beckwith is considered a 1st rounder too, DT Marlon Favorite, DE Ricky Jean-Francois and DE Kirston Pittman figure to be drafted in the middle-late rounds as well.
Of course, McFadden ran all over, past and around that bunch of NFL caliber players.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:38 am
and what about DST, 1 or 2? whats the general thing to do?
July 27th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Milicia
You should read the “draft kit” on nfl.com, you´ll find many on espn and other places but some leagues have different rules, stick with the one your playing on.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:47 am
They even have a fantasy 101 on nfl.com
July 27th, 2008 at 9:48 am
The questions you ask depend on each player strategy, there are no right or wrong answers, so read up.
July 27th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Another note from yesterday:
“It’s beginning to sound like a broken record but rookie running back Darren McFadden made yet another head-turning play. This time the first-round draft pick took a handoff from Russell and headed left when the defense started making a push in that direction and appeared to have the young runner pinned against the sideline.
But McFadden turned on the speed and turned the corner, barely making it through before racing up the field untouched the rest of the way.”
July 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Is Johnny Rebel from Tennessee?
And does he go to church???
July 27th, 2008 at 10:01 am
“Wide receiver Javon Walker showed his toughness by receiving a shoulder pad sandwich from two converging defenders and was able to hold on to the pass. Walker would immediately get up and finish by running forty yards.”
Encouraging news from imo camp´s biggest question mark (health wise). Seems healthy for now.

July 27th, 2008 at 11:01 am
LMN — Go to a newsstand/bookstore that sells American sports magazines, and find one or two that specialize in FFL. Nobody does things exactly like the next guy, but here are a few basic things to keep in mind:
- Great FFL RB’s are harder to come by than QB’s…the “name” RB’s will be the first to go…remember, there aren’t too many Adrian Peterson rookie success stories out there.
- The name QB’s usually start to go mid-first-round and later…a lot of guys wait for their #1 QB in the 3rd round, depending on which RB or QB is available when they pick.
- There are more WR’s with the potential to be great FFL picks than other positions…a lot of guys wait until they have at least their #1 RB and QB on board before picking their first WR…the WR position is one where you’re more likely to find a “surprise,” than just about any other position…most rookie WR’s, no matter how good they will be later, aren’t worth picking until you’re 2+ deep at that position (year 3-or-so is when WR’s seem to “get it”).
- People who don’t draft 2 Kickers and 2 Defenses, will need to drop somebody to add those positions later if they want…most guys wait to pick their Kicker/s until there is a “run” on them (there are only a few worth really racing after — the rest can be lumped-together.
- Bye Weeks are critical…make sure you don’t pick too many players at the same position with the same Bye Week…make sure the Bye Week is listed right next to your potential picks, so you don’t forget to check that.
- When you find a magazine with FFL ratings, etc., try and grab one with Cheat Sheets — they help you keep track of who’s already been picked.
- Look at your league’s rules and make sure you draft players who fit the bill (i.e, you don’t want a risk-taking gunslinger QB, if INT’s are heavily punished; you don’t want a Kicker who can’t kick more than 40-yards, if there are bonus points for long-distance FG’s, etc.).
- Use those Cheat Sheets (or make your own), and make your own ratings of players — as deep as the ratings need to be to cover all 12-Rounds of your draft (for example…if each team needs to pick 3 WR’s, make sure
you have rated at least 36 of them, so you’re ready to go when it’s your time to pick).
There are a ton of other things, but those are basic guidelines that should help. Again — nobody does it the same way, but if you prepare well, you have as much chance of success as anybody.
And…if you don’t draft players from other teams in the AFC West (LT, for example), you handicap yourself a bit…but you feel so much cleaner on game day.
Good luck!

LMN,
I am a cursed FFL player…every QB I pick ends up flopping…Gannon, Palmer, Brees, McNair all had down years when I picked them…this year I may take Cutler.

Remember this. Carter will take over the number 1 spot as WR by midseason. Walker will either lay an egg, or get hurt. We will go 3-1 or 2-2 at worst by the bye week. The only team I see us losing to is SD. Maybe Bills if we get too over confident after beating Denver and KC. We will go 8-8 for the season at worst. Mcfadden will be a top 5 rookie for the year. Russell will be decent for the year, but impressive at time. Our D will be ranked in the top 8. Our RUN D however will be somewhere in the middle. Our passing D will be top 5.
I can’t wait for the season. Oh, and by the way… Kiffin will remain as the HC for next year.
that is realistic dreaming…lol

Florida Pete Says:
July 27th, 2008 at 5:24 am
so there we have it…
MR announcing that he will punish this blog and any raider fan who described any confidence in the raiders vs the donkeys on MNF…
,………
I said I will punish people here who claimed we’d win by 30 +, along with the regular obnoxious kool aid drinkers in here who deserve it on general principle. Yes, that includes you. Don’t try to lump yourself in with those who merely have “any” confidence. I even have some confidence. I said it would be a 7 point game that would go either way. But make no mistake, if there’s anything good about us losing, it’ll be to come in here Tue. morning and rip your guys’ holes wide open all over again. You guys talk so much s’t. Oh , it’s going to just be fun in here if we lose big. If we win? I’m cool with it. That’s they beauty of us fans that have given up on Al. We have two dishes to enjoy. Raiders win? Cool. Raiders lose? We get to torture you retards.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:28 am
internet tuff guy!!!!
July 27th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I think he just popped a seam…
July 27th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Basically, Pete, all the people in here who talk s’t are going to get it big time if Denver slaughters us. Like they’ve never had it before. And I’m not alone. There are so many fans like me who’ve had it with Al, yet can’t get a word in with the obnoxious jerks in here. Denver kills us, and all of those people are heading right to this blog. Like I said, you guys are going to suffer two agonizing defeats that week.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:33 am
So MR — With all your spouting about coming in here with mature arguments and comebacks, where does calling people retards and idiots fall? Just more of your hypocritical ways. And bragging about being right, when your (allegedly) favorite team loses? Even more of you proving you’re no fan of this team.
Johnny Reb, come back out and knock MR around some more — it’s kinda funny to watch him argue with himself.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Internet tough guy? I’m talking about posting comments in a blog. I’ve never physically threatened anyone over the internet, since the thing was invented. But believe me, if Denver wins big, you guys are toast in here. You have no idea how many commenters fed up with your guys’ b.s. who’ve gone elsewhere are going to come here to just let you guys have it. Like I said, you guys will suffer two agonizing defeats that week. We’ll only suffer one.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:36 am
11680 — That is very realistic dreaming. Hope you’re wrong about Walker, but am excited about Carter’s chances of becoming a great receiver.
8-8 will be a great turn-around for this team, even though every loss will be a killer. Playoffs? Absolutely possible if we’re anywhere near .500 after 10-games. Keep the faith!
July 27th, 2008 at 11:37 am
If we lose to Denver, especially if we lose big, you can count on this blog being taken over by the “Al haters” for the entire following week. Completely taken over.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:37 am
arrrrrrrrr whats going on in camp? Dose any 1 know when Jerry plans on dropping off the Kool-Aid?
MR stop hateing on The RAIDERS the donkeys have no chance on monday the place is gonna be crazy!! The chokers r another story tho
July 27th, 2008 at 11:38 am
an internet tough guy doesn’t need to threaten somebody, its a person who only dares to talk smack behind the screen in RL they would run away and hide behind their mummy’s apron
July 27th, 2008 at 11:40 am
408 Raiders, the Donkeys have no chance? Denver always has a chance against the Raiders. Kiffin pitched a couple of fine games against the rat last year, but I don’t think Kiffin has as much control this year. If we win, cool. If we only lose by 7, which is about what I predicted, cool. If we lose big, you guys are going to get it.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Fair enough then, LMN. Then I’m an internet tough guy. I always thought an internet tough guy was someone who literally threatened people over the internet, physically, and I’ve never done any such thing, in my life, and never will. But as far as talking smack? Sure, I’m an internet tough guy. And, this internet tough guy makes good on his threats. We lose big to Denver, I promise you the topic in this blog the following week will be Al Davis’s inability to run a team. I promise.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Oh no!!! I might get picked on because I believe in my team, good or bad. Don’t know how I’ll be able to handle it. Probably won’t be able to eat or sleep for days! If the losing doesn’t kill me, maybe MR’s useless drivel will do it. So scary to think about!
July 27th, 2008 at 11:45 am
You guys have no idea how many fans, that you’ve gotten rid of over the past year with your iron curtain in here separating the “believers” from the “haters”, will be in here the following week just annihilating you guys if we lose to Denver. It’s going to be Christmas in September for them.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:45 am
internet tuff guy!
MR says
I said I will punish people here who claimed we’d win by 30 +, along with the regular obnoxious kool aid drinkers in here who deserve it on general principle. Yes, that includes you.
…………
come on guy whats wrong with the Kool-Aid.. and just how is I will punish people not a threat?? why cant you 4 once could you please tell us what it is you like about the Raiders? We all know u hate AL..
July 27th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Don’t worry MR, we will get you the help you need.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Hayez, not the people that believe in the team. There’s a lot of true believers I have no problem with. It’s the s’t talkers, like you. You guys are really in for it if we lose to Denver.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:48 am
why would anyone root against their favorite team? When you have a favorite team you love the team, win or lose. Sure any fan gets mad when their team loses, and even curses the team at that time. But they’re back on the couch, bar, or stadium seat the next week waiting to see their team play and with the expectation that they’ll win. That’s a TRUE fan.
No TRUE fan sits around and uses their team’s present state to ridicule other fans of the same team, or to even make dumb bets where the payout involves any kind of gain for the so called fan in which that fan gets to make fun and inflict more pain by the constant reminding of the team’s recent loss. Not a true fan indeed.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Punish people with typed words, 408. Yes, that’s the threat. And, I don’t mind being called an “internet tough guy”, as long as you’re not insinuating that I’ve ever physically threatened anyone over the internet. Because I’ve never done it. But threaten to talk smack? Uhm, I don’t know what planet you’re on, but that’s pretty much all that goes on in here, anyway. But if we lose to Denver, it’s you guys who’ll be outnumbered.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:49 am
MR as Nostradamus — predicting that other non-fans will go out of their way to criticize Raiders fans for the team losing. That’s a tough prediction? It’s actually so easy to see, it’s ridiculous. Since his comments are so redundant, we don’t even have to wait for the day after our first loss — we already know what to expect. The same ol’ BS as every other post. ZZZzzz…
July 27th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Don’t worry guys, if we beat Denver by 21 or more MR will never return here! lol
July 27th, 2008 at 11:51 am

the Donkeys are gonna suck A$$ this year and It all starts On 09-08-2008… Im not saying were going to win by 30+ but it would be great if we did!!!
IM IN
Internet tuff guy is not!!

July 27th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Raider11680, I’ve never rooted against the Raiders in my life. Heck, I don’t even root against the Raiders when they’re out of the playoffs (like many of you so called “die hard” fans do, hoping for a higher draft pick..), because I believe finishing the season strong bodes well for the following season. Example, 1999 vs. The Queefs.
But I have gotten to the point where I have zero faith in Al Davis. So when we do lose, you’d better believe I’m going to use it as a platform to state my case on Al.
Alongside that, you have so many obnoxious s’t talkers in here, who don’t let Al’s critics get a word in without ripping them, posting under their names, and then of course tattling to the mods and accusing them of being “disruptive” (like it’s their blog and they dictate the topics…), that it’s actually fun to come in here and rub their faces in s’t after we lose.
Like I said, when the Raiders lose, these obnoxious a-holes in here suffer two agonizing defeats. One being the game, the other having their precious little corner of cyberspace taken over by fans that were critical of the team from the start, and are back to say “I told you so”, and in the most endearing way….
We, on the other hand, only suffer one defeat, the game itself. Then it’s time to come in here and have fun.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:55 am
I’m a sh!t talker? I’m about the most realistic real fan you’ll ever meet. I see things pretty objectively, and don’t make crazy predictions like 19-0, or SB this year. Catching lightning in a bottle does happen, though, and why not with the Raiders?
Hoping for the best for your team doesn’t mean you’re delusional. Continually verbally attacking other people just because it’s easy to do is just stupid. See, I didn’t even call you a name, but I guess that’s me talking more sh!t.
You’re so predictable.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:55 am
I think the so called “others” as in the other fans that will come in here if we lose to the Donks, will all be one person posting as them… call it a hunch.
July 27th, 2008 at 11:57 am
MR, go back and read through posts 73-80…we don’t want to lose the progress we made last night do we?
July 27th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
can you really not see that you are rooting against the Raiders? And what’s more sad, it’s that you are doing it so that if you’re right, you get to dwell on the fact that you get to make fan of other brothers of the nation for the Raiders losing.
If you don’t like Al, fine. There are things he’s done I don’t agree with too, but I don’t sit here and hope the Raiders lose just so that I can make fun and stick in the face of other Raider fans.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:00 pm

sorry, about that.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
It is very hot in here.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
MR — I ask you once again (he never answers, just calls names or ignores me)…will you give us your assessment of the team — break it down for us — position by position? Can you do it without throwing-in your hatred of Al in to the mix? Hell, even throw Al into the mix if you must…but give us a team breakdown. Is there any hope on the roster, anywhere? Should the team even lace ‘em up on gamedays?
July 27th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Dakota I don’t know where you continue to find these photos of MR but they really are quite amusing. Can you find the one of MR as a baby?? That one is classic.

And, Dakota, we talked about the comedy thing. It’s not really funny if it’s only funny to your own tight knit group. Do you honestly believe any casual observer would come in here and think your put downs are good? The whole pretending to be a shrink routine? It’s only funny to you and the other “MR haters” in here, and that’s only because I get so far under your guys’ skin. Nobody outside of your guys’ little circle jerk thinks your funny, Dakota. Nobody.
Look, Dakota, I have a thick skin. If somebody comes up with a good put down directed at me, I’ll let them know it. I enjoy good jokes, even if I’m the butt of them. But if it’s just some retard repeatedly playing the shrink routine and accusing me of living in my mother’s basement…oh, and can’t forget the “camel toes” thing yesterday (the average 8th grader would think that was stupid, let alone adult…), the joke’s really on you, and your inbred crowd that relishes in them, thinking such soft, brainless quips will somehow deter me in here…

And with the photos, Dakota. Posting links to photos to put people down is something we did back in 1996 on AIM. You’re a little late for that party. But then again, you probably just learned how to use the internet last year.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Yeah Dakota — Stick to calling people retards and idiots. That’s the more mature way to insult people.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Oakglenn, I’ll see a shrink if you do. We’ll go together, because you’re here as much as I am. And you’re much more emotional and worked up than me. So by default, that makes you more in need of therapy. But I’ll go with you. I believe therapy can only make a person better. I like to exercise my brain in all ways possible. My worst nightmare is to become some simpleton who truly believes that posting random google images and captioning them with someone’s name is clever and witty.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

July 27th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

July 27th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

Jokers R US hahahahhhahaha. Ignore the ignorant.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Hayez, when I call someone a retard or an idiot, it’s because it’s true. But I don’t have “camel toes”, and it’s not me in those photos Dakota is posting. So you’re comparing apples to oranges.

So predictable it’s almost funny.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Watch, give it an hour or two…and Oakglenn is going to go off on one of his tangents about how the only reason I’m here is because you guys keep engaging me, and that if you guys just ignored me, I’d go away. When he does, and he WILL, be sure to refer him to the comments in the past 10 minutes.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Hayes, I don’t try to be funny. Everything I say, I say because it’s true. For instance, Dakota is a retard. That’s not a quip or a joke. He is retarded. He admits he’s slow. He brags about it. It’s kind of a redneck thing, I guess.

I’m only speaking for myself, but the only reason I keep replaying to you is because I find amusing how you keep making yourself look like anything else but a raider fan. I have been doing some homework and have come to a conclusion.
These are the greatest QB’s of the modern era.
Montana
Plunkett
Staubach
Elway
Bradshaw
Griese
Brady
Marino
Star
I was thinking about adding Aikmen but …… well I dont need to repeat the rumors.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Opps
I meant add Stabler to my list
July 27th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
I agree, Hayez, back to football.
So, what kind of chance does a team have when they’re 19-61 over the past 5 years, and still have the same GM?
July 27th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
OK, Oakglenn has just declared he’s done engaging me. So, that means we’ve got about a half hour until Oakglenn lectures the rest of you and demands you ignore me. He’s pretty much on schedule…
July 27th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
11680 it’s called trolling. Someone here posted a whole diatribe about it a couple of days ago, and one of the most interesting parts of this was the writer said trolls will come in and repeat themselves over and over. Just like MoRon.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Uh oh, are we sure Oakglenn’s done? Remember, referring to someone in 3rd person is the same as engaging them. So, he’s got some more engaging to do, before he quits and then lectures the rest of you on engaging me. We’re behind a few minutes, now…
July 27th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Andrews Mom, personally I don’t have Joe Montana at the top of my list only because Montana was surrounded by Hall of Famers. Brashaw was the same way, but both are incredibly good QB’s no doubt.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Listen, you guys, make sure that none of you address me or mention my name, again. That way Oakglenn will be easier on you in about a half hour, when he goes off on his tangent demanding you guys ignore me. The nail sticking out is the one that gets hammered.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
There are plenty of guys sore after the first few days of practice. Harris should be fine — better to rest a sore part, than to risk a season-long lingering injury.
And, it takes awhile for new coaching and techniques take hold. We want all players to rely on their coaching and technique when it’s crunch-time. Anybody remember what Gallery said last year about keeping his head while in the trenches, in the heat of battle? That’s what Cable needs to get from Harris, and if they’re as good as their potential suggests (Harris AND Cable), it’ll be a great success.

Well MR, when the GM is also the majority owner, you don’t have much of a chance to do anything about that.
Plus, on a Al Davis note, I think it’s funny that now that the Raiders have been on a slump all of a sudden Al Davis is this senile character. Old, yes. On his last leg, oh hell yes. Ok, and maybe a little senile too, but still, that doesn’t take away from the fact that he was a major player in bringing the AFL and NFL together. Or that he took a Raiders team that was falling apart and turn it into a championship team. Just because the current state of the franchise is not what we might want it to be, doesn’t mean Al Davis is a horrible owner. Let’s not forget the positives people.
However, I do agree that he should be passing the torch soon. And I think that how much money he spent this off season is an indicator that the end of his rule might be very close.

Oakglenn, tell us about the time Joe Montana told you in a Wendy’s bathroom that he wanted to play for the Raiders. Remember that?
July 27th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Daze the guy who has had the best camp so far is Jason Richardson. Dude might be developing into a PLAYA.

Raider11680, you’re asking for it. Oakglenn has just stopped engaging me, finally. You know what that means? His lecture to the rest of you guys, where he demands that you guys ignore me, is coming within minutes. Don’t be the nail sticking out.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Payton is better than brett IMO
July 27th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Oakglenn, Montana wanted to be a Raider, remember? Tell us that story, please? He told you in an Arby’s bathroom, or something like that?

The story is in #283

July 27th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
A top-10 QB list without Johnny U, but with Plunkett on it? Love the great Raider Jim Plunkett, but we need to be a little more objective than that.
Would Brady be top-10 without knowing every defense he faces through nefarious means?
If Elway was surrounded by HOF talent for his entire career, he would probably be at the top of the list.
Now, that’s about as objective as a Raiders fan could be.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
MR
somebody asked you to please break down the team position by position in a professional way. I have seen people ask you that before, but no answer. Why?
July 27th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Actually Daze, I saw both Unitas and Elway play many times with my own eyes. Elway was the best QB I ever saw. hate to say it but it’s true. If he had the Pro Bowlers and Hall of Famers Montana had, he would have won 6-8 Super Bowls.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Peyton definitely should be in the top-10. Starr and Griese should fall, and Favre might belong in 7-10 range.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
ufkc horse face!!
He was a great qb tho but ufck donkey homo
July 27th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Favre now says he wont show up for camp…this guy is a complete train wreck. He still hasn’t filed for reinstatement making ALL this drama obsolete!
Jackace!

hurry jerry(gasp)need new post(cough cough) starting to die in here with MR spewing same old crap(wheez)he needs to follow different team(vomit)maybe the bucs, than he would have no reason to visit this site.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
HayesDaze, if you include every QB that won 1 SB in his life as Favre did you would have to include Doug Williams, Hosstetler, Dilfer, Brad Johnson, do you want to put them in the HOF ? Favre is a meathead!
July 27th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Had Al traded for (bought) Elway when he tried to, the Raiders would have more SB rings than any team in the league. We would’ve gladly gotten used to his big grin while he was holding the trophy high.
Just my opinion…
July 27th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I’m going to make and start selling flip-flops with Bret’s Favre’s face on them.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
yeah If he were a Raider I would be able to deal with horse face but…..
July 27th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Favre is the only 3-time NFL MVP. That’s gotta say something. Does he belong at the top of the heap? Not even close. But better than a few on that original list? Absolutely.
Saw Elway almost every time he played the Raiders — win or lose, he’s the best QB I’ve ever seen at any level.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
His threat to report to camp was just a hollow threat since he hasn’t filed for reinstatement. Packer management is praying this hillbilly honk goes away.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Daze
well we have a kid in JRuss who I hope in time changes your mind about the best QB of all time!! =)

The sfgate.com report is up:
“For all the money the Raiders threw around this past offseason, wide receiver Drew Carter looks like the steal of the free-agent class.
The fifth-year receiver from Carolina continued to catch everything thrown his way, proving himself to be the most reliable and consistent playmaker at JaMarcus Russell’s disposal through after four days of camp.
Of course, none of this means he’ll be a starter when the Raiders open the season. Javon Walker makes too much money to sit on the bench and Ronald Curry has been solid enough to hold his job.
With that said, neither of them have done the spectacular as often as Carter. In Sunday morning’s practice, he sprinted down the sideline and went high for a deep catch from Andrew Walter. When cornerback Chris Johnson tried to wrestle the ball away on the ground, Carter fought for a good 30 seconds before emerging with full control.
That mixture of speed, hands and determination will serve the Raiders’ vertical game well.
In other camp observations:
** Running back Darren McFadden dropped another easy pass, something he has done at least once a day. This one came on a quick slant in front of outside linebacker Thomas Howard, with Russell getting the ball there in a hurry.
“C’mon, D-Mac, make that play!” running backs coach Tom Rathman yelled.
Raiders coach Lane Kiffin notices a problem with his technique that he said can be easily corrected.
“He’s had some innacurate hand placement on some catches, which is a surprise because we didn’t see much of that in camp before,” Kiffin said. “He’s got so much going on and so much pressure on him and so many different plays. So we’re going to keep pushing him and then there will come a time when we pull back.
** One thing off McFadden’s plate are kick and punt returns. For now, the potential starters are rookie safety Tyvon Branch on kickoffs and Johnnie Lee Higgins on punts. Kiffin said McFadden remains a backup option.
** Veteran safety Greg Wesley returned to practice after missing two days with back spasms. Cut by the Chiefs last week and signed by the Raiders, his presence was immediately felt when he charged the line of scrimmage to halt running back Adimchinobe Echemandu.
Coupled with the impressive play of strong safety Gibril Wilson, this is the sort of physical play at safety the Raiders have lacked for years.
** Left tackle Kwame Harris (lower back) missed a second straight practice but will try to go at tonight’s workout. His return will allow replacement Paul McQuistan to return to guard, which is a good thing. McQuistan continued to struggle at left tackle with another false start and poor pass protection.
** Three more false starts and shaky pass blocking means deepened concerns about the offensive line when the team isn’t running the ball.
** Russell fumbled his first snap of training camp, backing away before he had control of the ball from center John Wade. Unlike the other quarterbacks in previous days, he didn’t run a lap.
** Wide receiver Jonathan Holland made the play of the day with an all-out extension catch in the end zone.
** Consider former starter Jake Grove the early frontrunner for the starting center job ahead of Wade and Chris Morris, not that the Raiders are close to picking a winner. If nothing else, he’s the only one without a botched quarterback exchange.”

And Mista — We all know that one SB ring doesn’t make a great QB. A body of work does. Favre’s got a pretty impressive resume for a guy who wasn’t surrounded by superstars himself.
And Jeff Hostetler? Certainly no Hall Of Famer, but he sure was the whipping boy for Art Shell. Hostetler paid more than anybody for Shell’s terrible coaching. Going back to the QB calling their own plays debate — Hoss should’ve just kept doing it. Hoss was all man, and the Raiders could’ve used him the past 5-years.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Jerry had said in one of his practice reports that Jamarcus looked great when he was throwing them all over the field, putting up a “Star Wars Laser Show” or something like that. Anyway, I’m bringing that up because I think that might be a very good thing come play action time, since we are going to be running a lot… you throw in a play action play on first or second down, and BAM! TD CARTER! lol…
July 27th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Yes Elway would have looked sharp in the Silver and Black. And don’t give me that Elway would not play here bull crap because his dad was the coach of the Stanford football team at the time, I am sure he would have loved to be in the Bay Area.
Now why haven’t we got a new update on today’s workouts?

Hey MR,
We’ve got Denver (Home), KC, Buffalo, and San Diego (at home) in our first 4. That’s a good schedule to go 4-0 if we can get over the san diego “hump” - the only team that’s better than us is San Diego, and we’ve got them at home and we’re due for a win - we should at least go 2-2, and I would expect to go 3-1 beating Denver and KC easily, and we should handle Buffalo’s conservative offense fairly well too with our revamped secondary. I just don’t see Kiffin getting fired early in the season - Al hates paying big money to ex employees and he should know that he shouldn’t expect the Super Bowl in JR’s first year as a starter.

Damn JMc, please get read of that drivel that some people submit. They pump in garbage only trying to be first. I enjoy reading your articles and a lot of the comments that have good content. But those comments are diluted by those idiots crowing about their quickness in submitting a comment.

[...] Day 3 Raiders tackles have had difficulty slowing the charge of Derrick Burgess (almost always on the left side, a few snaps on the right) and Kalimba Edwards from the outside. Kiffin conceded it is that area where [Kwame] Harris will need to get up to speed. [...]
