Training camp, Day 7

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 at 7:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Quick hits from Wednesday’s training camp practice:

– The Raiders spent the latter part of practice in teams sessions working on specific situations.

Two that were included: offense is down by two points with 1:19 left and one time out, trying to work for a field goal from its own 36. Offense gets one play from the 12-yard-line. Score or lose.

The drills were largely dominated by the defense, although a medium-deep pass from Marques Tuiasosopo to Zach Miller set up a 54-yard field goal attempt, which Sebastian Janikowski hammered dead center at least halfway up the uprights.

In a later drill, Janikowski connected from 37 yards to the south end zone _ one that struck a pine tree and bounced back onto the grounds of Redwood Middle School when it looked as if it would travel over a senior center and on to Redwood Road.

Janikowski missed wide right from 48 yards after Walter connected on three consecutive passes to McFadden, bringing the offense from its own 32 to the 33 of the defense. The completions came after a McFadden drop, with the rookie starting to run before securing the ball.

– DeAngelo Hall intercepted an Andrew Walter pass intended for Tony Stewart during a drill which the offense had no time outs and needed to throw to the sideline, which was followed in close order by Gibril Wilson’s interception off Walter.

– McFadden and Derrick Burgess are getting double duty. McFadden worked during some seven-on-seven drills as a receiver, Burgess in pass coverage as a linebacker.

With McFadden, it is all part of the crash course he is getting in as many areas of the offense as possible.

“That’s probably close to unheard of for a guy to be at two different positions in individual that’s a rookie, to go to running back individual, then receiver individual and go back to running back.,” Kiffin said. “He’s handling it great.”

Burgess said he is fine with flopping sides and working as a linebacker on occasion if it can reduce the amont of double-team and chip blocking he receivers rushing the passer. Playing without his hand down is more of an adjustment.

“That (bleep) makes me tired man,” Burgess said. “No, it’s cool. The only thing different about that is it’s all these different sets and everything. But it’s cool. It’s nothing. I’m an athlete man. ‘

– Steve Wisniewski ran a marathon once. Paul McQuistan may be next, or so it seems. He was forced to run another lap for a false star, something that seems to happen at least once every practice.

– During one drill with the offense inside the 20 and out of time outs, Tuiasosopo threw to Chaz Schilens, who stayed inbounds rather than immediately step out, drawing a swift rebuke from the quarterback.

Schilens later jumped offsides and was sent running by Kiffin. Schilens took it upon himself to run around both fields, rather than just one.

– Some rough moments for Ronald Curry and Javon Walker during a routine drill with James Lofton throwing passes into the corner of the end zone from 30 yards away.

Curry dropped two balls, while Walker dropped one, then turned the wrong way and whiffed an other. Lofton by the way, throws a nice ball.

– Drew Carter came down with a difficult catch along the sideline in which he tumbled to the ground with Nnamdi Asomugha. Carter briefly went to the sideline to be checked but was fine; Asomugha came out briefly and returned.

– Jake Grove continues to take reps as the starting center, and has taken to being the first to arrive, leading the rest of the linemen, when the unit moves from their drill area to the team area.

– Ricky Brown continues to work with the first team at strong side linebacker, and even stayed fairly even with McFadden on one pass that fell incomplete, moments after Sam Williams failed to turn around in pass coverage in a play which would have resulted in pass interference.

– Wide receiver Arman Shields missed practice with a sore knee.

“We probably could’ve pushed him, but he’s been working really hard,” Kiffin said. “He goes through all the special teams stuff, too, and it’s just wearing him down a little bit.”

– Cornerback John Bowie, who injured a knee Tuesday night, missed practice and Kiffin termed him “day-to-day.” Safety Greg Wesley (back) and linebacker Grant Irons (hamstring) missed practice.

– Word is the defensive line ran up a bill of more than $2,500 on dinner and drinks at a local steak house Monday night when freed for an evening from the “healthy” diet instituted by Kiffin and strength coach Brad Roll.

I hope they put a time limit on those laps the lineman have to run. Make ‘em puke Kiff!! The Nation will not tolerate another year of false start, false start, holding, false start, offsides, neutral zone infraction, false start, holding….

Jerry unless i am missing something you seem to be playing it pretty close to the vest in regards to the running game. As much as everyone wants to hear how JR is doing we all know the Raiders are going to run, run, and run some more this year. How does the rookie look? Michael Bush, Justin? Does it look like they can move from #6 to #1?

  12. La Milicia Negra Says:

Great to hear that Grove gets to the line fast, the o-line has for many years been too slow getting in line so the QB gets more stressed than necessary… with an almost rookie as Jammy he needs to feel comfortable calling the plays and read D’s before calling them… he need all the time he can get at scrimmage before hike….

  13. OT81 Says:

Great news about Jake Grove and I like what I’m hearing from Ricky Brown..

John lynch is exploring opportunities maybe we can use him during training camp just another veteran player possibly adding depth or start at some point, the wolverine package? lynch, wilson and huff that’s pretty intimidating! And the broncos are gonna get spanked this upcoming 1st game for sure!

  17. Reka5maticRaider510 Says:

the broncos are gonna experience the ” dark knight” in the opening game this september! 28-3 raiders

  18. anthony Says:

jerry i am wondering how William Joseph is doing i haven’t heard that much but he was a first round pick and it seems the raiders have pretty good scouting on those types of players?

  19. Terrapin Says:

You’re missing the good news gentlemen (& ladies) …only McQ is consistently false starting on the line. The false starts (at least from what is being written) has died down a great deal since the beginning of camp.

  20. AlsMyPal Says:

But Lowdown, can the man play the run? And can the beef up front plug some gaps?

  21. JB Says:

Coles Chop House where they dined is excellent and definitely $$$$. Wine corkage fees there are $25./750 ml - very pricey. The steaks & chops there are top flight.

    They definitely be eating GOOOOD!

  22. Terrapin Says:

Validation: The false start penalties were minimized again today. For the most part, the line is settling down. They will still need to work on a few things before the 49ers roll into town next Monday for a joint practice.”

Did somebody say Russell is going to miss the San Fran practice game? And when is that, anyway?

  24. H-TOWN RAIDA Says:

John Lynch “done with the Broncos”, sounds like an invitation to Napa is in order. If he is upset with the Donks, the best way to deal with that anger would be to lay a lickin on Brandon Marshall in the Monday night football opener! Sounds like a poor mans Bret Farve situation brewing. Lynch would be a PERFECT RAIDER!

  25. Aussie Raider Says:

Sounds like these boys will be fairly fit with all the laps they’re running

  26. dick v Says:

No wonder they don’t like mcq at rt, he is dumb and slow: just a mauler. its nice to hear ricky brown is exceling. i am very interested in seeing him at sam. I have a feeling we will either take Rey Malaluaga or Brian Cushing in the draft next year either way depending on where we draft. Maybe ricky brown will end up solidifying that sam spot once and for all. That damn rey maluaga is a beast. i have had a man crush on him since the rose bowl. i know some of you will get annoyed by 09 draft talk, but i can’t help it.

  27. H-TOWN RAIDA Says:

Yup, 09′ draft talk does suck! Thanx Dick.

  28. dick v Says:

ok back to talking about a 40 yo safety that has no shot at making the roster.

  29. DoeDoe Says:

For what its worth Ricky Brown lit it up last year in preseason. Ive always liked the guy a lot - Howard - Morrison - Brown = I wouldn’t mind the slighest bit

  30. H-TOWN RAIDA Says:

Yup. First of all he isn’t forty. Second of all the Raiders haven’t had a profesional at the saftey position since the L.A. days. Sorry Dick, its relevant, unlike the 09′ draft.

  31. dick v Says:

lynch is being ran out of denver for marquand manuel and marlon mcree. he is not a starter anymore. he was drafted by sam wyche 20 years ago. He would not beat out cooper or tyvon branch: branch returns kicks, and cooper is solid in specials. Gibril wilson and huff are both solid starters by any teams standard.

  32. dick v Says:

the big nickel or the wolverine package was needed when we had no lbs. Now morrison and howard get snaps in the dime package.

  33. dick v Says:

he should have saved himself the embarresment of being cut like Sapp did, and retired and quickly trashed the Bronco’s for being a franchise in dissarray so everyone remebers his better years in Tampa.

  34. Reka5maticRaider510 Says:

Oh I just remembered the miguel cotto vs. margarito fight last weekend, just like russell is gonna do against opponents take a kneel!

  35. Reka5maticRaider510 Says:

it may sound bad but if we have paul mcquistan as a starter for us at RT, we will be doomed!

  36. H-TOWN RAIDA Says:

Morrison and Howard can’t stop the run (period) Lynch would provide and instant pop to the defensive back group. Lynch isn’t done, and he would have something to prove.

  37. VBR8R Says:

Lynch could be useful in certain situations but he wouldn’t start many games i don’t think. Al has always loved bringing in guys from rival teams, even if its just bringing em in for a while to pick their brains…Fargas is definitely on my squad this year, not to change the subject.

  38. Reka5maticRaider510 Says:

If the Manny pacquiao vs. dela hoya fight comes to terms this december, i’ll have the same feeling if the Raiders and niners go to the superbowl fighting for a championship, the happiest man alive!

  44. RIP Dan Birdwell Says:

Burgess at LB? What the hell? Gotta be a 3-4 look, but to make it honest we have to have him at least drop back once in a while.

Ricky Brown at SAM. Muy cool. Running with McFadden is good, solid against the run is MUCH better.

The things I most need to hear about:

    1) How both RT and LT are progressing.
    2) What’s up with whoever’s playing RDT?
    3) Is Oren O’Neal catching anything?

Thanks for what there is, Jerry.

  55. HayesDaze#37 Says:

    Kiffin is building a team.

Back in the day, the players had a lot more freedom — and took more liberties with them. Now, team-building must be orchestrated by a coaching staff. This group of coaches, led by the kid Kiff, has done a great job of doing that.

And…it was no coincidence the first practice after party-time was the toughest one yet. Moral: Party hard? Better play harder. Very good message to implant. Now, to translate all the team-building into confidence and victories.

All the Al haters and “fire Kiffen” screamers must realize how this team is different from recent years-past. This team is being run about as smoothly, and with as much fresh energy, as any team in the league.

  56. Bob Marley Says:

To the guy who asked about William Joseph…..Jerry said earlier that he´s playing End in the 3-4 and DT in the 4-3 and that he´s not standing out but not screwing up either.

Hey Dick V, I am not trying to be argumentative, but I question the whole AD does not allow RR to blitz theory. I think it is RR not allowing the LBs to blitz. I mean, if AD’s philosophy was to not allow LBs to blitz, then why did the 2002 Raiders D have 17 or so sacks from its linebackers? Why would AD allow one coordinator to blitz and not the other…just does not make sense to me…I blame RR.

  59. H-TOWN RAIDA Says:

The haters will always hate because any positive news Kiffin gets can’t possibly go to Davis, it’s all Kiffin who is planning and dictating all the practices and now we find out selecting a menu, and letting his coaches coach.

When things go bad, anything, it’s Davis who is at fault.

The team will win, the attitude is there, Jerry’s blog comments really paints you a picture of determination by a group of men sick of losing.

Team building is having the back of your team mates and
displaying the dedication and drive others will want to follow.

My sense is anybody who has managed a group of people will always seek advice to more experienced seasoned people. Kiffin is letting the coaches, coach.

Kiffin has learned well, the USC culture has helped and he is a very confident dude.

  67. H-TOWN RAIDA Says:

    In Too Deep says:
“you mean the Lakers didnt get Artest? that sucks!”

That’s right Laker fan! Rockets can shut down TWO Kobe Bryants’ now, how’s that taste?

  68. Riverside Raiders Fan Says:

Just a few comments from the Inland Empire, where there are thousands of Raiders fans.

My thoughts: You can’t have a Hall of Fame list that doesn’t include Jim Plunkett … you know his record.
And, Ray Guy, if he had played for the Cowboys, Steelers or Packers, he would be in the HOF. Being a “punter” for the Raiders, the team everyone loves to hate, makes it difficult to get in.

Russell will be OK and he’ll tear them up. But, if Walters is needed, he’ll do just fine. Kiffin will run
the offense to Walters’ strength and Walter will still be complemented by our same, awesome, electrifying running game. Don’t sweat Walters, sweat Tui!

Our passing game will be awesome. Our WR’s and TE’s are working against the best and that will make their jobs
of creating separation that much easier. With just a little separation, Russell will lazer those rockets to them.

You guys are so right about 8/8/08 and the Donkeys. It’s a “MUST WIN SITUATION” and it sets the tone for
our games leading to the bye-week. We “MUST” beat the Donkeys to set up our two following games, which are on the road. The cooks and then the bills. Both games should be wins, especially if we trounce Shanarat and his donkeys. That sets us up against the cooks perfectly, and a win against them takes us into Buffalo
with two wins against division rivals. Our biggest problem with Buffalo, will be focusing on them and not thinking a week ahead to our home game against our hated rivals, the dischargers. I’m sure glad Turner is still coaching them and not Marty (Mr 14-2, who got fired????).

    Go Raiders.

  69. HayesDaze#37 Says:

Jerry Rice was burning guys his entire career. Guys like Lynch can’t cover. In this D, you better be able to cover.

  70. H-TOWN RAIDA Says:

    I mean “Republican”. My bad.

  71. TEOFILO DIMAANO Says:

now if we can only execute and hold onto the lead in the fourth quarter…. not giving the other team a chance to gain momentum…. if we can just hold on…..that goes without the PENALTIES!!!!!!

  72. HayesDaze#37 Says:

I didn’t say Lynch is too old…I said he’s too slow. One big hit a game won’t scare away everybody.

  73. Oakglenn Says:

This team has a long way to go. Fortunately, we’re getting the horses, and the defensive players are taking it personally. That’s a good thing.

  74. TEOFILO DIMAANO Says:

true dat…. but just having him would be a good backup no?? i have to jet … its mustering time…..peas…..

  75. Bob Marley Says:

    Dakota…post 58

I agree with you. Just the other day they were showing a game of the 80’s Raiders, the 87 team that featured Bo in the game vs Seattle and Bosworth.

The Raiders ran a base 3-4 with Pickel at the Nose, Howie and Sean Jones at DE with a helthy share of blitzing from the LB´s and the Safeties, most notably Toran.

  76. Bob Marley Says:

And that was just one example, there are more, including the one you pointed out.

  77. TEOFILO DIMAANO Says:

but still.. all this news from the donkeys is getting better and better…. i bet the denture man is trippin!!!! this is a must win…. and a confidence maker in the nation…. i feel it … i feel it…. its goin down……..

  78. Riverside Raiders Fan Says:

We’re all in agreement that we need more blitzing and I agree with Dakota that the blame goes to Rob Ryan. We might have won a couple of those close losses last year with some creative blitzing on our part going into the 4th quarter. It would also help if “freaking Seabass” can make a pressure kick when it counts and when it wins a game for us. Maybe he’s just so “over-due” that he’ll finally come though for us. Hope so.

  79. Oakglenn Says:

You guys the Raiders did blitz last year. They just weren’t good at it. BHP said the exact same thing. When you blitz, you HAVE to get the QB. HAVE TO. You don’t, you give up big big yardage on easy plays. Keep that in mind.

  80. HayesDaze#37 Says:

Dell — Don’t mind the coaches, players, or Al getting figuratively smacked-around wgen they deserve it.

But, it’s amazing how quiet things get when the unreasonable critics* start realizing the team might be on to something good…just waiting for one bad report, about anything, so they can pounce.

Al’s done as well as any GM in the league this off-season. Kiff appears to be the real deal so far — and will remain the coach as long as he stays the real deal. The two of them have reached a mostly comfortable armistice, not unlike many other great owner/GM & head coach combinations.

To the critics, they’re losers even when they win. To the (mostly) objective observer, they’re already winners for moving forward. If this team wins, this will go down as a legendary — if somewhat incendiary — match of personalities. I’m looking forward to the legend of the Raiders being more than an old ghost.

    Optimism — nothing like it.

  81. Raider Dell Says:

I think it’s great somebody has started to devise plays to move Burgess all over the line, it will create mismatches.

A quarterback coming under center will have to find Burgess, and any alinment change he has not seen in film or game action will be an adjustment.

Those little subtle changes make you think and create more anxiety than just having him, Burgess play in the same position LDE.

I know Burgess can play linebacker, he has the wheels. Morrisson and Howard will have to cover the backs or TE and Burgess will be concentrating on the OLB position to rush and disrupt gaps.

I am really excited about Wilson, crunching ball carriers, that will transfer to all the defense and all will want to be a part of this new culture.

  83. Riverside Raiders Fan Says:

    Oakglenn:

You may be right, I’m not a stats person. But, I don’t remember them blitzing to any real extent. Maybe my memory problem has to do with Monte Kiffin, who I believe blitzs on almost every “freaking-down.” If someone good with “stats” looks up our number of blitzing, in regard to number of defensive plays vs other teams, I believe we would be rated among the bottom 3 teams.

And, yes, you’re right, can’t argue, you need to have success blitzing to continue and we didn’t have success. Right or wrong, I still blame Ryan and his long straggly hair and beard that looked like sh&t.

  84. Will D Says:

Getting “Friendly Fire” Lynch is better than having Greg Wesley. I say cut him and give Lynch a try if we have to bring in a has been.

  85. Bob Marley Says:

While I´m sure Al Davis prefers not to blitz and have the pressure come from 4 rushers (wether its from a 4-3 or 3-4) if you use the blitz and the QB is going down, he´ll be ok….which reminds me of another game I recently watched, the 2004 game vs Pitt in Ryan´s 1st year, plenty of blitzing as well, but in that case largely ineffective.

The one thing that Al Davis has always stressed is the bump and run, man to man coverage from the DB´s. That´s it.

  86. Oakglenn Says:

RRF, they sent the LB’s and they didn’t get the job done. Now I’m a big safety and corner blitz guy. That, they really didn’t do.

If you guys are talking about John Lynch, dudes, that guy has nothing left in the tank. In his defense, he left everything he had out on the field. He’s a Hall of Fame player, no doubt, but he should’ve retired before last season.

  87. Bob Marley Says:

    Riverside

You are mistaken, in Monte Kiffin´s Defense, or any Cover 2 based defense for that matter, they rarely blitz.

They rush their 4 DL and drop the LB´s and DB´s into coverage, each of them is responsible for a certain area of the field and must account for their responsibility for the Defense to work. Once in a while they will send an extra man, but it´s not very often.

  88. Oakglenn Says:

You guys it’s not about blitzing, it’s about disguising your blitzes. Peyton called down to Eli DURING THE Super Bowl and told Eli what Bellichik was going to do. The tuck play is a perfect example of a disguised blitz, in that case a corner, that Brady never saw coming.

  89. Riverside Raiders Fan Says:

With our two shut down corners, we will surely see a lot of man-to-man and bump and run coverage. And, with their talent we should show good results. Hopefully, many picks.

  90. HayesDaze#37 Says:

We weren’t afraid to blitz in the days of the great Lester Hayes. We had the players, and we had the attitude. This defense sounds like they’re getting there. They need to prove it on opponents in the pre-season; useless pre-season records notwithstanding, this team needs to establish an identity before 8/8 — on both sides of the ball.

And why not move Burgess around depending on the matchup? He’s the versatile type of athlete Jason Taylor is.

  91. Bob Marley Says:

If Kiffin at some point hires a Cover 2 disciple of his Father to run the D, we may have a better defense but it won´t be because we blitz more.

  92. Riverside Raiders Fan Says:

Please don’t use the word “tuck” as I still can’t get over it. I need to learn to move on. My doctor says that a “winning-season” will be a perfect prescription for me.

  93. Dakota Says:

I guess we have to stop the run and force teams to pass once in a while in order to blitz, lol. I guess we could run blitz.

  94. Raider Dell Says:

    OakGlenn

Point taken, you can disguise a blitz packages all game, but you still must bring pressure and disrupt the QB timing, that’s why most DC’s blitz.

Getting the QB down is the goal, but effective hurrys by a QB can be just as good, ala Giants, Patriots superbowl.

Brady said weeks later in either SI or Sporting News, he was never comfortable in the pocket.

  95. Bob Marley Says:

While I didn´t see as many blitzes as BHP and Oakglenn recall, I did watch a few. One that stuck in my head was Morrison running into a wall that was the back of Sapp and the two blockers keeping Sapp in check, it was almost funny.

  96. Dakota Says:

Who will make the roster, Rankin or Echumandu?

  97. Dakota Says:

My money is on the rookie.

  98. HayesDaze#37 Says:

Gotta have the players and the attitude to pull off successful blitzes. Attacking the QB is more than just running after him. Tenacious, in-your-face, get-to-the-QB attitude is what your LB’s and DB’s need. Basically, they all need a little of Burgess in them to be a good blitzing team. Whether or not the blitz is delayed or disguised.

  99. Riverside Raiders Fan Says:

Lots of insights from you guys. As you know, I’m new to this site and I can hardly wait to read your comments after a few pre-season games. The more games we win, the more time I’ll be here reading the comments.

  100. Raider Dell Says:

Most view preseason like a dress rehearsal.

I hope Kiffin sets the tone and the defense stops the run agressively and pressures the QB.

Let’s not use the preseason as a meaningless games, let’s set up each game and fire all cylinders.

The Raiders need to develop an attitude, and the preseason is just the beginning to carry over to each game. Why wait till the opener, let it rip.

  101. ctraidersfan Says:

Blitzing is important but disrupting the QB is better. All you need to do is remember what the Giants did to the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Disrupt, the QB by hitting him, getting in his face, and making him move.

  102. Dakota Says:

What, no one cares about the battle for 4th string RB??? lol

  103. Riverside Raiders Fan Says:

From training camp comments, Echumandi isn’t showing the same progress as he did last year, and the competition is a lot stronger. If he can’t make it on ST’s then he’s gone. Rankin might not make it either as there is so much talent. I guess it depends on where Kiffin wants to have his depth?

  104. Riverside Raiders Fan Says:

See you guys tomorrow, have to run to Stator Brothers.

    Good nite and Go Raiders.

  105. Raider Dell Says:

    Dakota

The only battle we should be worried about is how do the Raiderettes look this year compared to the other teams cheer squad.

    yummy or delicious.

  106. Dakota Says:

    I hear that Dell.

  107. Dakota Says:

    Dell,

Did you see poor Johnny get dumped on about Shanahan? That was fun.

  108. In Too Deep Says:

RRF when you meet semi intelligent Raider fans in the IE do ever ask them if they blog?

  109. HayesDaze#37 Says:

    I’m out also.

    Raider On!

  110. RF Says:

yea. getting soft. put them back on that whole grain diet. no more steaks. slows em down. make em eat tofu.

  111. Bob Marley Says:

    Good night all.

  112. Oakglenn Says:

Bob, #95 is exactly what I am talking about. That happened a TON OF TIMES. And remember, when you send guys you’re vacating your zones leaving completely empty parts of the field.
Showing blitz and then going into your base, sometimes is more effective than sending guys. Just saying.

  113. Raider Dell Says:

    Dakota

    Yes I did.

Dakota you know what makes me so sick is the constant horse crap we hear from announcers how Shanahan is so brilliant, and his offense is so dynamic.

Elway has left and they have not won a superbowl since.

His drafts are terrible and you are finally hearing more fans starting to leap off his bandwagon and throw barbs his way.

I really can’t stand the guy.

  114. Raider Dell Says:

    Marley

Don’t forget about our draft Sunday.

    Be prepared, my friend.

  115. i dress in black Says:

ctraidersfan - the G-Men have an extremely talented front line. We don’t. We have a very talented secondary. Our talent needs to knock down the ball instead of the QB. Much different philosophy

  116. Dakota Says:

    Dell,

I agree. Reeves rode Elway to what, 3 SB losses, than Shanahan rode Elway and TD for his 2 wins…many coaches could have done the same.

Shanahan is going down this year.

  117. Bob Marley Says:

    Oakglenn…I hope we get better.

    Dell….I´m already prepared.

  118. In Too Deep Says:

dell you gotta admit he did have a nice run over there although his mistique has has worn down. a changing of the guard is at hands. I hope this JR guy is’nt all hype! My middel son is in his last year of jr all american football and it looks as though he might be graduating from line man to full back … oh yea!!

  119. Raider Dell Says:

    Dakota

How far is Shanahan up Bowlen’s arse, come on most coaches would have been fired by now.

Classic Shanahan, signs henry the RB and pays him 7 mil to carry the ball, and then cuts him this year before camp.

What a poor talent evaluator Shanahan is, could you see any other coach have his mistakes and still be coaching.

There are many others, just one example.

  120. Dakota Says:

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/30/SPNV122CLH.DTL

I sure hope Grove can step up and grab the starting center position…I would love to see him and Gallery become solid vets despite never living up to the billing.

  121. Raider Dell Says:

    Marley

Good to hear, let’s have some fun.

  122. Bob Marley Says:

    Dell….speaking of Donkeys…..ever read this?…

    –John Elway a Raider?

“According to two people with knowledge of a potential pre-draft trade, the Colts had reached a deal to send the No. 1 pick of the 1983 draft to the Raiders — only to have the deal blocked by NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle.

“We almost had Elway, but Pete Rozelle voided the trade,” former Raiders personnel man Ron Wolf told The Star-Ledger last week. “We had the trade set up with Baltimore, but Pete wouldn’t let it happen.”

Rozelle and Raiders owner Davis spent many years in the 1980s in courtrooms over the Raiders’ move from Oakland to Los Angeles, among other issues. Simply put, the two didn’t like each other.

Ernie Accorsi, then the GM of the Colts, now the Giants’ GM, confirmed a deal was in place with the Raiders that would have netted Baltimore an unprecedented three No. 1 picks and two No. 2s. One of the No. 1s, Accorsi said, would have been the sixth overall, which the Raiders had arranged to acquire from the Bears.

“Yeah, it’s never been written, but I was going to make the deal only if it included getting back a top 10 pick,” Accorsi said. “I wanted to make sure we still got (Hall of Fame quarterback) Dan Marino. I wasn’t going to trade Elway for anything less than the best package ever.”

Wolf said he didn’t know the details of the almost-trade, but said he was was told by someone in the Colts’ organization that “it was much better” than what Baltimore later received from the Broncos for Elway after the draft. That deal included back-up QB Mark Hermann, tackle Chris Hinton and a first-round draft pick.

The deal apparently had been made by Davis and late Colts owner Robert Irsay.

    So what happened?

“Irsay capitulated with the commissioner,” Wolf said.

Even late Bears general manager Jim Finks was baffled. Accorsi said he called him and said, “Are we getting (played) here? Because somebody’s killed the deal, and it’s not me.”

All parties thought a trade was set for the glamour-boy quarterback to land with the Raiders and Davis.

Irsay was worried that Elway would use his minor-league contract with the Yankees as leverage to never play for the Colts. While Accorsi tried to hold firm and call Elway’s bluff, teams often went over the GM’s head and called Irsay with offers.

So, before the draft, when someone from the Raiders called Accorsi and said, “Mr. Davis wants to know what it would take to get the rights to Elway,” the response was, “You don’t have the arsenal.”

Accorsi wanted the three No. 1s and a No. 2 — with a top 10 choice. The Raiders had the 26th choice in Round 1, but were prepared to send Chicago several players to also acquire the sixth spot. Accorsi agreed to accept the Raiders’ No. 1 pick in 1984, too.

Everything was in place — except the final go-ahead from Rozelle. That never came.

“Davis had his suspicions that Pete killed it,” Accorsi said. “All I knew was I was going to get the best deal ever or I wasn’t trading him.”

True to his word, Accorsi didn’t trade Elway. Irsay did.

Now, let the record show that all that prevented Elway from becoming a Raider was Rozelle.”

  123. Will D Says:

Rankin and E-man are probably 1 and 1A meaning they are about the same. We should go with Rankin because he is probably younger and cheaper. Even though we are a young team, we need to start building the team with draft picks and young undrafted free agents that slipped through the cracks. This would give us more depth and the opportunity to groom our own.

  124. Dakota Says:

I agree, when Bowlen finally realizes that Shanahan is running his team into the ground it might get ugly in Denver. The Rat may sink his teeth in and not want to leave quietly, lol…hopefully the divorce will get nasty!

  125. Raider Dell Says:

    In to Deep

Great news about your son, my son plays HS football and I just want him to stay healthy this year.

Regarding Shanahan, his run so to speak was never more than any other coach, the bottom line is Lombardi’s, and he was the genius, remember.

He got his two with Elway, since his record is average at best.

I don’t hate him personally, but let’stop hearing and talking about his past.

  126. Raider Dell Says:

    Bob Marley

    Thanks for the info.

Are you an X files fan.

Conspiracy theories are always around the Raider organization, it’s why we are Raider fans.

  127. Dakota Says:

Bob, it is difficult to determine what trading all of those picks for Elway would have done to us (the only name player I can find from any of those nearly traded picks was Sean Jones), but I am sure Al would have surrounded Elway with more talent than the Broncos did in the 80s…man, what could have been! Shoot, that almost ranks up there with losing Bo prematurely, the Jim Lachey trade and Al benching Marcus…

Oh well, spilt milk, water under the bridge, etc…

That´s no conspiracy theory, you have the quotes from Ron Wolf, Ernie Accorsi and Jim Finks…you won´t find many football men more respectable than that trio.

  138. Dakota Says:

  139. Raider Dell Says:

  143. RaiderTay Says:

Derrick Burgess in pass coverage is the stupidest idea I ever heard. Let him do what he do best and rush the QB. How hard is that!!!

Sounds like Sapp at Dend or Brayton at LB. Its almost like Ryan needs atleast one stupid ass idea per year.

  144. ghost to the post Says:

Still think walter’s got something special. and when/if he is released he will burn us hard… we beter show some loyalty and make him number two. He was a trooper in through out the “year of Hell”

  145. Dakota Says:

Oh, one last thing, I just read on ESPN that the Packers offered Favre a bribe to stay retired…pathetic, lol. Let the man play, he has earned it (although I think he is VERY overrated and will fall on his face trying to learn a new system, but I want to watch him fall on his face)

    Night.

  146. ghost to the post Says:

he can blitz as a linebacker and get heeps of sacks.. I don’t know if you were watching but the defensive status quo won’t do.

  147. The Twerp Says:

THE RAIDERS ACCORDING TO THE TWERP

Riverside Raiders Fan, all your discharged hyperbole aside, the Raiders have proved only one characteristic over the past 80 games: They are a bad team.

    TWERPING TRUTH

It may feel good for you to pound your chest and howl at the Moon how the Raiders are a dominate team.

    The Raiders are not.

The thing that counts: Raiders: 19-61 in five seasons.

    TWERPING REALITY

Riverside Raiders Fan, keep howling and playing the ‘08 NFL season between your ears.

The higher the expectations, the greater the fall.

Reality will be all the more painful with a raw untested Raider QB protected by a Raider offensive line that allowed 113 sacks in the last 32 games.

    THE TWERP’S FINAL THOUGHTS

The only dominate team in the AFC West resides in the city of San Diego.

9 STRAIGHT Charger wins vs. the Raiders dictate that the Chargers are far, far superior to the Raiders.

That is reality, not the preseason Silver & Black fantasy.

  148. dick v Says:

Dakota, i am not sure about blitzing or not blitzing with regards to Al. What I am talking about is that the 3-4 was scraped in the middle of the 05 season, and Burgess and Sapp quickly tallyed up 26 sacks after thet switched to the 4-3: predominantly. The lb’ were irons, clark, brayton, and delawrence grant, morrison (rookie): williams hurt in preseason. the raiders scraped the 3-4 because the perssonnel was not there to run the system, and the best two players were great in 4-3: sapp and burgess.
Forward to 08 and sapp is gone, and the Raiders have two good young lbs and a more dpeth with brown, williams, and thomas. Burgess may be that hybrid pass rusher, and Sapp is no longer on the team. MY POINT IS THAT ryan has been running a defense with Al. He has the perssonnell now to run a d like his brother in Bmore. This is Ryan’s last chance in Oakland. I know he will give a lot more looks like Rex does in b more, mangini does in ny, and Bellicheck does in NE. He always compares Kelly to Trevor Pryce( a de that slides inside when Suggs lines up next to him. I am just talking about giving more looks and using more of a hybrid flex defense.

  149. dick v Says:

twerp, the window is closing on San Diego: hell it might have closed with the departure of Brees. LT ’s better days are behind him. Rivers will never be a qb that can win the game on his own. He is nowhere as good as Eli or Big ben. Outside of Gates that offense has no playmakers now that lt is all dried up. the defense is good, but Jamal williams is fading away. He was arguably the best nt in the league and he has been the anchor for years over there. there is nobody to replace him the lb core is great on the outside, but weak in the middle. there are too many holes in that charger team to beat the pats, colts, jaguars or stelelers. all you really can say is that the bolts should win the division, most raider fans can see that despite the optimisim, but we know the arrow is pointing up for the raiders and down for the bolts. we are goingto catch the bolts, and most likely it is this year. lt has been the raiders worst nightmare, but he is old and busted now. i would fear sproles more than lt

  150. Ghost of you know who Says:

    # Johnny Rebel Says:
    July 30th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

We can’t just wish them to victory, Kiffin and Co. need to wake up and get ready because Shanarat will be waiting to steal the show if they so much as flinch. They need to pound the ball all night, nothing fancy and beat him at his own game.

    …..

Some fan you are. Only MR could have put it better. How about having a little confidence in your team, huh? We’re going to crush Denver, because we’re the mighty Raiders and they’re going to buckle in fear the minute they enter the black hole. Grab yourself by the bootstraps and get with the winning team, wuss.

  151. dick v Says:

twep its sad that aj ran lofton out of town for not making that sorry ass wr core better. aj never takes wr high, and when he did he took buster davis ahead of anthony gonzales and steve smith. that recieving core is bad because aj doesn’ t know how to draft wr.

  152. Blackholepriest Says:

Finally it’s starting to get through to you. Jerry had everyone in here thinking Big Al doesn’t like blitzing. And I’ve been saying or mor than a year that that was not true.

In the 70’s and 80’s we blitz a lot ecause we had great results. Ted Hendricks was a blitz backer extraodinaire. Matt Millen often blitzed whenever he wanted to as long as when he did it he was effective.

Michael Huff blitzed last year several times but he was so damn tentative you’d never know it was a blitz.
Sam Williams blitzed 50% but he was never any good at it so you never knew it.

Our best blitzer last year was Morrison because he was aggressive. Howard came off the edge but he would let HB’s block him. You can’t do that, Hendricks would slap the crap out those guy’s if he were out there. We were just too soft at it.

That’s the very reason Kiffin is letting Wilson and Cooper hit guy’s because he wants the defense to play a lot more physical. We played the scheme but we just were very tentative in our execution. Coaches call it playing faster (aggressive) be decisive and physical.

If you watch film of our defense most of our problems stem from a lack of playing fast or more physical.

  153. Ghost of you know who Says:

Well put, Priest. Real Raider fans like you and me know that Al Davis has always loved to blitz, and use the 3-4, and use zone coverage. But that bastard Rob Ryan comes in here and forces his hand. Then these stupid fans try to scapegoat Al. Some people just don’t pay attention. We’re the real fans! 12-4! Raiders 45 Denver 0 !!!!

  154. dick v Says:

bhp, i can’t argue with you. I always felt that Al likes to win. He will do whatever allows his team to win. I would like to see more looks and different schemes this season from Ryan. I feel he has been sort of hand cuffed to the 4-3 mainly because Sapp. Now he is gone, and i beleive we will see the defense open up a lot more.

  155. dick v Says:

i may be overstating al’s role a bit. I know that sapp was getting paid to play and now that he is gone, Ryan is using the mini camp to introduce schemes and packages that are not limited because he is worried about playing a certain player.

  156. lefty 12 Says:

153-thought you said you’d be back AFTER the donkey game?

  157. dick v Says:

the raider d really needs to be more physical. I like the defense a lot more. kelly, richardson should improve. i was excited to hear that burgess added some weight to be a more complete player.

  158. Blackholepriest Says:

That’s probably true to. Also consider the fact that he played it safe because he knew he couldn’t gamble due to the fact that we couldn’t score to get the points back.

Having Russell and the ability to score changes a lot of things. If he gambles and loses the game isn’t over. We can get the points back so it gives Kiffin and Ryan a lot more ammo.

We will definitely attack on both sides of the ball.

  159. Blackholepriest Says:

Yeah Dicky V, this is a much different team to be sure.

  160. Blackholepriest Says:

    Sorry Dick V.

  161. lefty 12 Says:

Priest,i think you’re putting too much on Russell’s shoulders.he is still a rookie in some ways.granted he has the talent, but he will need time to mature.you can’t turn the def. loose until you see how much Russell has progressed.

  162. dick v Says:

bhp i definitely see us being more agressive on both sides of the ball. the team is balanced now. the offense may even be the strength of the team: run game at least.
Huff is a solid player. he was sort of timid in the box, and he is no Palamaulu or bob sanders: but then again those two or good for only about 12 regular season games plus the playoffs. They look great flying around, but they are always getting hurt. Safeties like adrian wilson and kerry rhodes can do a lot more things because there size.

  163. los angeles raiders Says:

I just saw the ed hartwell interview on behind the shield .com…he looked in shape and seems confident that he will make the team.

  164. Blackholepriest Says:

OK you’re right Lefty12, My point is we haven’t had the talentt at QB in 5years. Our O will primarily be the running but he will make defense play us honest something they didn’t have to do last year. Also he will make a few throws a game that will allow us to put up points. Something we just haven’t been able to do.

While he wont pas for 300 yds a game he will make some key throws similar to the one to JP in the SD game. That’s huge IMO Especially if we can get deep.

  165. dick v Says:

it would be nice to see Hartwell bounce back. He would give us a lot more versatility and playmaking ability, but i think he is done.

  166. lefty 12 Says:

Priest i know what you are saying and i agree.he will be able to and he will make throws we haven’t seen in years.but we have to be patient and realize he will make mistakes and some may cost us dearly.but his upside is unreal, without question, and i can’t wait to see him perform-now and for many years to come.

  167. los angeles raiders Says:

I hate jake grove as our starting center, he’s a small 300 pounder, (if there is such a thing). We need a ” hog” I dont see that in grove or wade .

  168. Blackholepriest Says:

    WORD!

  169. dick v Says:

I say they let the defense go all out. For a team that is loaded with play makers and is shaky at the point of attack, i don’t think you can sit back and let offenses just pound away. We have all seen that this defense wears down. go all out and create turnovers, and dare teams to take shots down field. This defense has a lot of speed. the db’s are the best unit in football. the lb’s can fly. make the offenses take shots: pound the ball with fargas and dmac.

  170. Blackholepriest Says:

LAR, yu’re talking baout the young undersized Jake. This is the new and improved Jake who’s alot stronger and can anchor a line. His technigue is much suited for this ZBS, he should thrive in this scheme. That’s why he’s running with the 1st team.

  171. lefty 12 Says:

    nite all.

  172. dick v Says:

The raiders rely on the center to get to the 2nd level. a hog might not fit the scheme. Grove has added strength in the offseason, and he can get to the second level, I am interested to see how he does.

  173. los angeles raiders Says:

    Cut Grant Irons! campaign 09

  174. los angeles raiders Says:

I rather give some arena league wr with 3000 catches a shot than this guy..waste of space!

  175. Blackholepriest Says:

We must be agressive on O if we’re not we will pay for it. We have to dictate tempo, I’m not talking about throwing downfield 15 times a game but I am talking about making the defense play on it’s heels. We must scheme well and hit teams where they’re weak. We cannot play scared. Sure Russell may nt be up to the 30+ passes a game but we cannot play Marty ball either.

  176. los angeles raiders Says:

Gnight..you tube ” go raiders” funny clip.

  181. Johnny Rebel Says:

Hey Dakota, Art Shell’s tecmo bowl offense never did work as planned, and any comparison to Shanahan as a coach is not worth debating until we get a coach that can bring 2 superbowl victories in his first four years. Shanahan has been to 10 conferance championship games and 6 superbowls. 46-10 over three years with back to back superbowls. We can only hope Kiffin is that successful. Ghost your the kind of dumbass that give Raider fans a bad name. Dumped on about Shanahan, lol.

  182. Ghost of you know who Says:

You tell ‘em, Rebel! I hate these people that try to lay the blame on Al Davis when we know it’s Art Shell who believes in that vertical game b.s. Al Davis is a WCO guy. Gruden picked Al Davis’s brain when designing his offense. Real Raider fans know this.

  183. Ghost of you know who Says:

We are the best around, Brien. And nothing’s ever going to keep us down. Except for the corrupted league, because that’s all that’s kept us down the past 5 years. But fear no more. We’ve got the weapons to overcome it, now. We’ve got Gibril Wilson.

Uh oh, that’s old, let me see that Tootsie Roll. Get it? Roll? Brad Roll? Tootsie Roll?

  188. La Milicia Negra Says:

Brad Roll, will after the season be heralded as we did Cable after last year…. Grove, Gallery, Miller, Curry and Harris, all have benefited from him being hired….

  189. JediRaider Says:

Twerp is a typical know-nothing charger fair weather fan - why bother attacking him facts? It’s obvious his football IQ is even lower than his real IQ, which is a feat in and of itself. Twerp, enjoy the last waning season or two of Charger success - As of this decade, the raiders have won 3 AFC West titles and SD has won 3. The Raiders won one AFC Conference Championship and the Chargers have won zero - we were robbed in two other games losing to the eventual SB champions every year we won the west and the superbowl loss is attributable to Gruden knowing our system - simply bad luck. It’s great that you only want to count the last five years, which is probably when you became a Dolts fan, but in that time span we completely rebuilt our team with only the K and P the same from that year. How long did it take you to rebuild from your last Superbowl appearance? 10 years?

Enjoy your trash talking while you can - your team is falling apart and if you don’t win a superbowl in the next two years, you won’t have a shot for 10 more years because you’ll be just good enough to 8-8 giving you ample mid-round draft picks that won’t amount to jack - you’ll be 1990’s-2000 Kansas City. Recalled as good for a period of time but never good enough to actually be remembered.

Your fortunes lie with LT, and he’s pushing 30, it’s only a matter of time until he’s done - might be this year, might be next year, but the decline is going to be awesome to watch. Once he’s just a half step slower, the rest of the NFL can attack your cry baby statue of a QB and his 30 second release without fear.

I can’t promise a victory against the dolts this year, but unlike the last few years, we have the pieces in place to put up points and force Rivers into throwing situations - and at that stage you’re done - so keep an eye out, the Raiders rebuild is essentially complete, a couple more lineman on D and O and a year of experience for Russell & McFadden is all we need, so this time next year I won’t be saying maybe, I’ll be saying hope you enjoyed the glitch in the matrix that allowed you to win, but we own you again biatch.

  190. Johnny Rebel Says:

All you have to do is look at the first opponent and you start seeing that Davis finnaly gave in to Shanarats offense and adopted it for the Raiders as have the Chiefs this year too. Ghostofyouknowwho (MR).

  191. Thec Says:

    First!

  192. DirtyBathWater Says:

Yo jedi posting novels now? Lol good points and I agree with ya bro

  193. DirtyBathWater Says:

If kiffin manages to get this team to open up with a dominating win over denver on a monday night on stage to the world with every one watching at least by 17pts or more all will be forgiven by AD and there will be no more talks about kiffins job or relationship because AD wants nothing more than to win especially against shannarat and his minni donkeys

  194. Exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

I found it ironic this morning visiting WalMart that the cover of Madden 09 at the exit featured Bret Favre.
    lol

  195. Raider4life Says:

I am so sick of Favre. Just heard the Packers are willing to give old dude 20mil over 10 yrs. just to go away. Please just take the money and disappear forever.

  197. Exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

I’m on Farve’s side. I thought he should have been able to reclaim his job through competition and failing that, let him go. Whomever gave them the best chance to win should get the job. He’s earned the right and the Packers are being a$$holes. They didn’t treat Reggie White this way. There is more to this than we know. Paying him $20 Mil to stay away. NO CLASS!!

  198. Raidermvp Says:

Runnin a 3-4 defense isn’t a bad idea as a switch up, but we should run a 5-2 defense on 1st and 2nd downs.
Burgess, Warren, Sands, Kelly, Richardson on the front; with our best linebackers Howard and Morrison able to roam free to tackle and play the pass.

  199. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Exla…

    LOL talking about Madden,

I stopped playing Madden in 05… I was wondering when Madden ‘09 was out… Now I have to figure out if I should by a 360 or PS3… think it will be Xbox again….

  200. Batman Says:

Ed Hartwell will be the key to our defense having a good year or not. Just wish we hear more about him in training camp. He has been quiet thus far. He has the know how, comming from the ravens defense, how a top rated defense is suppose to operate, maybe that will be contagious this year, hopefully. Has anyone heard anything with Sean Joseph, another guy who can help,if he can stay healthy.

  201. Raider4life Says:

Ex–Then Favre should have never retired and gone through all that BS & crying sh*t. Green Bay moved on and committed to ARodgers. Favre is just like Manny. They both want the spotlight on them and don’t care about anyone else. Sure their play has earned them the right, but the time has come for both of them to shut the hell up and move on.

  202. La Milicia Negra Says:

    EXla…

i’m totally on GB’s side… if he had said in feb, that he wasn’t going to retire it would be another case….

  203. La Milicia Negra Says:

Supra Societatem Nemo…. thats how I see the world…

  204. Raider4life Says:

If Hartwell is 100% I would love to see them move Morrison outside and have Hartwell start in the middle. Haven’t really heard much tho how he is doing or if he has ran with the first team D.

  205. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Raider4Life…

my money is on Ricky Brown or Robert Thomas…

  206. La Milicia Negra Says:

But Hartwell injuryfree and like his old days would be an upgrade…

  207. Raider4life Says:

LMN–On the Raiders website he was talking and seems to be doing great in camp. If he can get back to his old days with Baltimore and be the starter in the middle I think it is a huge upgrade especially in the run D.

  208. Dakota Says:

Artest already has a beef with the Yao…he hasn’t even been traded to Houston yet!

    hahahahahahahaha

  209. Dakota Says:

Hartwell, even if only 90%, would be a huge upgrade at MLB (just because of Morrison’s inability to shed blocks), and would allow Morrison to move outside where he belongs…but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

  210. La Milicia Negra Says:

DAkota thats what I fear too, haven’t heard anywhere that Hartwell was with the 1st unit… if he isn’t it now, he probably never will…

  211. Dakota Says:

Looks like Wesely is proving Lambardi right….bummer. Would Lynch be any better, or just another 750K gamble?

  212. Dakota Says:

    Lombardi…ooops

  213. Raider4life Says:

No Lynch. No Wesley. No more old, worn out safeties please.

  214. Dakota Says:

    No Rod Woodson?

  215. Exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

I did’t like watching Mays go out with the Mets and Snider with the Giants, Unitas with San Diego or Namath with the Rams. But they were over the hill. Farve is not. The emotion of playing at so high a level and the comedown after the disappointment of losing made him make a premature decision. If the Packers don’t want him, let him go!

  216. Dakota Says:

    Exla,

The day that Favre retired I said on this blog that he would be back, that he just wanted some love from the Packers…he never got it, and now he wants to go punish them by playing with the Viqueens…can you blame the guy?

Let the man play…he will probably fall on his face. It is widely known that the Packers had to keep the playbook pretty simple for the guy, so how is he going to go figure out another team’s system and excel in it? He probably isn’t going to do that, so trade his azz to the Viqueens and watch him crash and burn.

  219. Dakota Says:

I mean no Rod Woodson right NOW, lol. He is still probably better than Lynch or Wesely!

  220. Dakota Says:

Garcia injured…interesting. Will Gruden go with one of the 17 QBs on his roster or make another call to GB?

  221. Exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

“Darren continues to make a play or two every day, a wow play,” Kiffin said he is impressed by McFadden’s willingness to learn.

“He picks it up really well and really fast,” Kiffin said. “He just wants to be in everything. He was sitting in on special teams meetings the other day and he wasn’t even involved in it. He just wants to be around ball and be around the guys.

“So he’s everything we thought when we picked him. All the research was that this is the guy that has no issues on the field, in the classroom. Great preparation, great football guy, his teammates loved him, and it’s showing. I can’t think of one negative with him.”

  230. Exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

I can’t count the number of times I posted this before the draft:

  231. Joe Aska Says:

Good morning, Friends. Got my 64 oz cup o joe and my silver and black pride. Marley, couldn’t have said it better. McFadden: 200 yards vs. the Donks. Guaranteed. And, no work ethic needed. He’s a Raider. That’s all he needs to be. We don’t need work ethic. Fancy smancy term for 49er types. We win because we’re Raiders. Don’t ever forget it.

  232. Thec Says:

NATION what is up? in another follow on meeting.
LMN, good artcle on DMAC thanks Bro.

  233. Joe Aska Says:

Eric, have a demo copy of Madden ‘09. Not great. You’d expect Madden to not be so bias against us, considering everything Al has done for him. Played a season last night and one opponent scored on me, in week 7. Won 78-7, instead of my typical score of 78-0. I don’t know what Madden’s problem is. Maybe he just needs a hug from the great lord Al. Feels neglected. Whatever the case, thumbs down for Madden ‘09. Bias against Raiders.

  237. Batman Says:

Raiders are going to be a much better team this year than last , no doubt. I think whatever postions that give the raiders problems this year, will be immediately dealt with through free agency. Al Davis knows hes just a couple of players away from a super bowl team. He also knows his time is running out, due to his age. So figure he will open that check book again, God bless. How about a bonofied middle linebacker, a left tackle for starters.

  244. Dakota Says:

  255. BIG AL's GOON Says:

It’s amazing that some fans would actually group G. Wesley and John Lynch together. There is no comparison between the talent of a John Lynch and some obscure average at best safety in Greg Wesley. Sure Huff should be pretty good at FS, hopefully, but he’s no John Lynch and I’m sure if brought in there has to be something that a player of Lynch’s calber could teach to the young inexperienced Huff.

I’m sure some of the same people that are complaining about Lynch were complaining about Rod Woodson and he was and has been the best FS we’ve had to date since Eddie Anderson.

  256. Johnny Rebel Says:

    Correction since Turner.

  257. Thec Says:

Like the idea of teacher, but not at the exspense of a roster spot.

Dirty one, what is up Bro?

  258. K-Rock Says:

Lynch will end up in New England

  259. Johnny Rebel Says:

Lynch won’t beat out Wilson and he can’t cover as well as Huff. I think he wants to start.

  260. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

raiders should bring in takeo spikes!

  261. BIG AL's GOON Says:

I know to most here Kiffin is considered a coaching saviour and can do little to no wrong and should have the team turned over to him for the next 20 years, but to all of that I completely disagree. There have been so many exccuses used to defend Kiffin and his 4 win season to the point that it’s really pointless to argue, for now. The fact is the Raiders have been re-building through the draft since 2003, getting younger and younger adding more and more inexperienced players that use the excuse that they need (X)-number of years to develop only to have them not develop into playmakers but rather just average players. Five years of rebuilding getting younger and younger and five years of losing badly.

The days of cutting highly talented vets is over we are now cutting draft picks and replacing them with yet another young inexperienced drafted player that we will have to wait (X)-number of years to determine whether they can play at a high level or yet just another marginal player. I’d rather Big AL revert back to his old way of doing things and bring in highly talented vets not just average vets merely to fill a hole only to be replaced by a rookie the following year.

  262. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

oh and i think madden comes out on ps3 aug 12th. i reserved a copy. and yes it looks like teams were rated rased on winning records. miami, st louis, atlanta, oakland are ranked at the bottom in that order. it doesn’t look like they account for free agents to improve the teams rankings.

  263. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

    based*

  264. BIG AL's GOON Says:

Turner was a solid safety for us, but I don’t think he was on Eddie A’s level, maybe, maybe not, but he definitely wasn’t on Rod Woodson level. And it would be a shame if 31 other teams sit back and watch NE go and get yet another highly talented vet and end up going deep into the post season yet a-freak’in-gain. NE is a perfect example of a good mix of good drafted players and highly talented vets, Lynch would just be one more. This used to be us, BABY!!

  265. McRaider Says:

I think the updates are great, but they really don’t tell me anything.

Some player and great in pratice and average in a game.
Some are average in practice, but great in a game.

I don’t think we will have a clear idea of how well the players will do individually u/til we start the pre-season. MAN I CAN”T WAIT FOR Aug 8.

    Takeo Spike yes, Lynch no

  266. Johnny Rebel Says:

    Lynch is no Woodson either.

  267. Johnny Rebel Says:

Turner was a great safety, closer to Woodson than Anderson in my opinion. Its a shame stomach cancer took him so early. But I don’t think Lynch will ride the bench and be a mentor, at least thats not what I have seen.

  268. Raider4life Says:

I think there is a reason why nobody has signed Takeo Spikes. I think he and Lynch will retire or at least should retire.

  269. Johnny Rebel Says:

The older the pattsies get the window closes that much more.

  270. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Dakota…

LOL, that Peter Schrager is funny, he makes some good points… and shoots down every positive thing to say… I’m glad he didn’t have something to say about us…

  271. Johnny Rebel Says:

Lynch has the look be a talking head on a sports round table show.

  272. McRaider Says:

I didn’t know turner was a safety, I thought he was a cornerback

  273. KoolKell Says:

    17. Oakland Raiders-The Raiders are the most entertaining team in the league. Like them, or hate them (there is no in-between), Al Davis will do whatever it takes to win. Some will argue with the Raiders being placed this high on the list. There is not one team in the whole NFL that did more this offseason to upgrade their roster than the Raiders. They brought in a top notch safety and corner, and will have the number one rated pass defense in the league. They have solid linebackers and the best running back trio in the league. Jamarcus Russell is only in his second year, but all he has to do to win is limit his mistakes and hand the ball off. Michael Bush, Justin Fargas, and rookie sensation Darren McFadden will handle the rest, and don’t be surprised to see the Raiders make a run at the playoffs.

  274. Johnny Rebel Says:

    Eric Turner was a safety.

  275. mcfaddenswaggon Says:

Burgess is going to have stamina this year….10 sacks

  276. La Milicia Negra Says:

what da hell does he know about power rankings?

  284. lefty 12 Says:

about as much as anyone else who makes power rankings.

  285. BIG AL's GOON Says:

To people, mainly fans that like to do the fortune telling thing, “we will be a playoff team in 8 years” yada, yada. To that I say champoinships are won and lost every year, thus the future is now! Big AL use to feel this way thus his motto of “We don’t re-build we re-load.” Big AL wanted the Raiders to have a shot at a champoinship every year not some obscure 4 to 8 year master plan that generally never works.

Some, heck most teams are in a perpetual state of re-building year in and year out. I just hope that “if” this new way of thinking doesn’t work that we revert back to more traditional ways of doing things.

  286. lefty 12 Says:

btw,the off. system is not shanarats system.over half the NFL runs pretty much the same system.its all a hybrid off. from a guy named Paul Brown-heavy on the run, lots of QB movement.

  287. Johnny Rebel Says:

Free agency is not what it used to be. Teams lock up their starters with longer contracts or just franchise them.

  288. Johnny Rebel Says:

Lefty 12 the system Shanahan created was a combination of Dan Reeves, Bill Walsh, and Alex Gibbs. Paul Brown has nothing to do with it.

  289. lefty 12 Says:

Goon-the old way of doing things only works if you have a solid base where most of your team is set, then you can bring a player or two to fill a hole.our problem was we had too many holes.the whole team got old too fast and had to be replaced.we can thank B.Allen and chuckie for that.

  290. Johnny Rebel Says:

And Lombardi, dont leave that moron out.

  291. lefty 12 Says:

Reb-Walsh ’s system was something he learned from Brown.aqlso Holgrem runs the same system and he was a coach before the rat was successful with horsetooth(Elway) and the donkeys.

  292. lefty 12 Says:

Reb-Walsh ’s system was something he learned from Brown.also Holgrem runs the same system and he was a coach before the rat was successful with horsetooth(Elway) and the donkeys.

  293. Johnny Rebel Says:

No Holgrem does not run cut blocking schemes, thats a Shanahan staple.

  294. lefty 12 Says:

    sorry about the double posr.

  295. Johnny Rebel Says:

Walsh’s first job in the NFL was with Oakland in 66′. How do you bring Brown into the picture?

  296. Joey Bee 1 Says:

I knew it! The Linebacking core is struggling. We can’t have a minor-league backer in at SAM if he can’t cover it just doesn’t work. Can you imagine Wes Welker in the slot vs Rick Brown or Sam Williams? How do you like your toast? Burnt.

    Find another Linebacker.

  297. lefty 12 Says:

the off. system is the same.different blocking schemes but the system is the same one they both learned from Walsh, who in turn learned it or at least devised it from PAUL BROWN’s system.

  298. Johnny Rebel Says:

Brown tried to keep Walsh out of the NFL, they clashed over philosophy and styles. Walsh developed his own offenseive ideas working under Davis and took them to Cincy.

  299. lefty 12 Says:

    Walsh credited Brown.

  300. Joey Bee 1 Says:

Our Recieving core is being exposed. Ron Curry is finally getting evaluated by a Pro. Guest what ? He’s on the chopping board. Ron Curry = Minor leaguer = Cut him, find someone else.

  301. lefty 12 Says:

    you are hopeless.i give up.

  303. Tonio Says:

    Curry cut? please… no way..

  304. Tonio Says:

Curry’s a gamer much like Tim… inside route runner…good hands… sure first down… He definitely had a bad year last year … but… he’s doubtfully on the “cutting block”

  305. KoolKell Says:

    LMN,

It was nobody, some outfit called Associated Content. But hey….

  306. Batman Says:

The days of master plans are gone, half the team is gone every six years. Were knocking on the door NOW. We must be patient with JR. Thats whats great about Mcfadden he instantly takes the pressure off JR. Has anyone has an idea on how M. Bush is doing ? I hope we have a ground game for the ages. Love to see us rack up some crazy rushing numbers agaist the donks.

  307. El Dirty Says:

    Whats up Thec

Joe your a jack a$$… Curry is our best possesion reciever on the roster. He might not be a burner but he finds the wholes in the defense and gets open. If we didn’t have curry especialy after the commitment he made to himself and the team by hitting the weight room we would be in really bad shape at WR.

  308. SilverNblack666 Says:

Say whatever you want about Walsh’s and Al Davis relationship.

It is a well know fact that Bill Walsh spent his last Sunday beside John Madden and Al Davis he died the next day.

    Al’s Legend grows!!!

  309. lefty 12 Says:

Al’s Legend diminishes with every 4-12 season.

  313. Johnny Rebel Says:

Ok Lefty 12, here is an article contradicting your statement that Walsh learned his system from Brown, he tried to immulate Brown’s coaching techniques but the west coast offense Walsh created on his own after tutoring with Sid and Al’s systems. Even his college thesis was about the pro set in football years before he met any of these guys.

are you excited about this season or are you on the MR bandwagon of dwelling on the past and trying to ruin everyone’s pre-season excitement.

Yeah the last 5 years have been bad but we had 40 years of domination. Try being a Lions fan and come into their blog with your whiny we had a few bad years blah blah.

I am quoting your article here.

“He borrowed from the masters, people such as Sid Gillman and Paul Brown and Al Davis and others, but the resulting system was uniquely Walsh’s”

I think Paul Browns name is in there.

i’m through argueing with you.i know what i heard Walsh say many times, that he learned most of his off. philosophy from P.Brown.he also said he thought Brown did what he could to keep him(Walsh)from becoming a HC.Walsh felt that when Brown retired as coach of the Bungles he should have gotten that job but Brown intervened.

  324. KoolKell Says:

    666,

You’re an Idiot, you know nothing about the Raiders. A little cheerleading sissy, with no ciritcal input to this blog whatsoever. Your post are totally useless from an analytical point of view.

  325. SilverNblack666 Says:

You get a clue buddy this franchise is on its way up after 5 years of rebuilding. We had to rebuild after we made three legitimate runs at a super bowl.

    1. Fat Saragusa Falling on Gannon in AFC Champioship game here in Oakland

    2. The Tuck rule!!

    3. We faced our old coach in the Super bowl and Callahan was too stubborn to change the game plan.

After any team in the NFL make a run like that there is always a rebuilding period.

Your either in or your not so get off the fence its starting to crease your butt!!

  349. RaiderMight Says:

Same here Kool, but what does it help taking it out on fellow fans.

Start a patition to voice youre frustration for the last 5 years. I will sign it!

  350. KoolKell Says:

Some “so-called fans” are more concerned about Al Davis’s underwear than winning & losing.

    To quote a famous man

    “Just win baby!”

  351. RaiderMight Says:

I know you love the team, your just tired of Davis. Build a quick site with GoDaddy.com that will collect messages to Al Davis and at the end of the year, you can send them all out to the organization to show how a “large” (as you claim) group of fans want him out.

All it would cost is 20 bucks a year.

  352. RaiderMight Says:

I’m not an Al Davis lover or hater, I just love the team and hope to God that it starts turning it around, with or without Davis. Plain and simple.

  353. mcfaddenswagon Says:

how about you suck it up and root for ur team every sunday.

  354. Raider4life Says:

Nobody likes what has happened the past five years and nobody will argue that Al has made some horrible decisions. He has tarnished his legacy for making stupid moves and treating certain people like sh*t (i,e Tim Brown & Marcus). However, not a lot we can do about it. We all love our Raiders for better or worse. At least Al has made what it seems is one last effort to get this team to the playoffs and beyond. When Al is gone though I hope to h*ll that his son Mark doesn’t take control cuz dude is scary.

  355. 408RAIDER Says:

    AHHblow my nose

I guess you are the the resident teacher on this blog, your comments(I didn’t say post MR) are actually stupid and childish.

Let’s talk Raiders , oh I forgot you only want to talk about the last five years.

    Let’s roll, here goes:

    19-61

    I love Gruden

I welched on my bet to Dakota.

    I never steal others names.

    I hate Al davis.

    Kool-aid drinkers all of you.

The Raiders won’t win two games in a row.

I can change my mind at any time but you can’t and if your wrong I’m going to ask you the same question over and over.

If the Raiders win in September against the Broncos I can comment about the great win, as long as it is more then seven points (MR prediction) and if you lose to the Broncos you kool-aid drinkers are in trouble.

So to sum up no matter who’s name you steal, you are and always will be a rotten person.

Finally I met a blogger or your word “comments on a blog” from Rf.net. I mentioned you and I guess you are a work of art.

You are the ever ready bunny of hatred for Davis, you just keep going and going, etc..

I think your funny, in a dumb way.

Ok, call me retard, steal my name, do what ever it takes.

  361. mcfaddenswagon Says:

Bill Parcells for turkey chin of the year.

Jul. 31 - 4:30 p.m. ET”—

  368. Raider4life Says:

LMN–Mike Williams from Beast to three team bust. Hopefully he doesn’t keep following Maurice Clarett. Think that dude is doing 5 in the state Penn in Ohio.

  369. SilverNblack666 Says:

Supporting your team only when they win is called band wagoning, no one like the last 5 years, but I will grudgingly accept them after 40 years of dominating the NFL.

So you want to throw Al under the bus because of the last five years then remember you are also throwing the last 47 years of our history under the bus with him.

Has he got old, yeah has he got a little senile, yeah but what are we going to do take him out to the pasture and shoot him. We can only hope that he has surrounded himself with good decision makers that are ready to step in when he does die.

Back to my question unkoolkell please do tell me what incredible depth and insight you bring to this Blog again because you sure were bragging about it a minute ago and you never answered my question. Your only retort was how we would care what kind of diapers Al is wearing.

  370. TownRaider510 Says:

ESPN Just reported that Chris Henry will be suspended for the first 4 games of the season, however he can sign to a team as a free agent and practice immediately…Awwwww shyt..lol

    HENRY TO THE RAIDERS!?!

    Nobody would wanna play us..

  371. PFunk704Raiders Says:

Kiffin needs to stay in these guys ass, we need to turn this around and we have the personnel to do it.

  372. CORNELIO Says:

HENRY AINT S!@#, LETS JUS WORK WHAT WE HAVE

  373. James Pollock Says:

MCFADDEN will be the best running back in the history of the NFL if coaches spread the offense to let him have open space to accelerate. He has Reggie Bush’s prowless, OJ Simpson’s grace, Franco Harris’ stiff arm and Adrian Peaterson’s presence….with 4.26 speed and the acceleration that he has, he will take this team to the Superbowl THIS year (if given the ball enough). Using the Arkansas ‘Wild Hog’ formation 5-7 times a game with him at quarterback would throw even a NFL team off….my suggestion. Wow, best player in years!!!
