Training camp, Day 12 (P.M. practice)

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 4th, 2008 at 9:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Quick hits from Monday night’s practice with the Raiders and 49ers:

– Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha missed the second practice and coach Lane Kiffin said the cornerback was getting IVs and having trouble keeping down food. His status for Tuesday’s single session at 3 p.m. is uncertain.

– Stayed with the defense for most of the evening session, with the general consensus being they didn’t do quite as well under the lights as they did in the morning.

One player who did have a coming out party of sorts was defensive end Trevor Scott, the sixth-round draft pick out of Buffalo. While it’s sometimes difficult to tell because linemen must pull up before they get to a quarterback, Scott tortured 49ers reserve left tackle Joe Toledo.

With a quick first step, Scott twice got past Toledo while barely being touched for what could have been sacks of quarterbacks J.T. O’Sullivan and Alex Smith and also had a pressure which resulted in an incomplete pass.

Scott earned himself a hug from line coach Keith Millard and a pat on the back of the helmet.

Together with outside linebacker Jon Alston, Scott later forced Toledo into false start with a line stunt.

– Linebacker Robert Thomas, getting his turn for the third straight day as the first-team strong side linebacker, intercepted an O’Sullivan pass intended for Dominique Zeigler.

– Cornerback DeAngelo Hall was scorched for a pair of touchdown passes by Smith to Jason Hill, one on a corner route to the left and another on a fade pattern to the right. Later, wide receiver Robert Ortiz got open over the middle against Hall but Smith’s pass sailed high.

– Safety Tyvon Branch delivered what may have been the hit of the day, laying out De La Salle High School product Cameron Colvin at the goal line _ probably a bigger hit than coaches for both teams had in mind but one that gave a hint of the hitting ability Branch was reputed to have at UConn.

Branch also broke up a pass.

– Defensive tackle Gerard Warren came up with a juggling interception after Thomas Howard deflected a Smith pass over the middle by Smith intended for Josh Morgan. Howard also pounced on a poor throw from a pressured O’Sullivan for what was close to being a lateral.

– Wide receiver Javon Walker did not practice in the second session. Kiffin said the Raiders changed their original plan to have him practice twice Monday since he had practiced twice on Saturday. Also sitting it out were Derrick Burgess, who is having stomach issues. Others who didn’t participate were Terdell Sands, who was scheduled to be off, quarterback Andrew Walter (tired arm), cornerback John Bowie (knee), safety Greg Wesley (back) and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly (scheduled day off).

– Forty-Niners tight end Vernon Davis and Raiders defensive end Kalimba Edwards got into a brief scuffle that was broken quickly broken up.

– Strong side linebacker Sam Williams collapsed his side of the 49ers line in making a stop on an attempted sweep by 49ers running back Thomas Clayton. The 49ers rested Frank Gore, their feature back, during team sessions.

Williams was running with the second team along with Edgerton Hartwell in the middle and Alston on the weak side, with Ricky Brown, who was getting first-team reps last week, running No. 3.

– Cornerback Michael Huff, who has been making more plays as a free safety than he did as as strong safety, seemed to be arriving a step late on most plays against the 49ers offense.

– Left tackle Kwame Harris pancaked former teammate Ray McDonald during team drills, while Robert Gallery was worked over on his turn by Justin Smith.

– Running back Darren McFadden broke free and pulled away from 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis on his most impressive run.

– What some sideline observers say has been a relatively calm camp for caustic offensive coordinator Mike Martz changed Tuesday night, with Martz railing at receivers who were incorrect on their reads while running their routes.

“It’s a corner (bleeping) blitz, what do you do,” Martz shrieked at Morgan.

– Wide receiver Arman Shields, who had a rough early session, caught a deep play-action pass from JaMarcus Russell over cornerback Tarrell Brown.

– Gallery, who has been virtually penalty free through training camp, was whistled for a false start. With the 49ers in town, the Raiders temporarily suspended their policy of having players run for penalties.

– Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, who held the same positon in San Francisco, was giving 49ers announcer Joe Starkey a bad time during warmups, which he took with the team.

“Out of sight, out of mind,” Knapp said. “You forgot about me, didn’t you?”

– In the A.M. blog, I referred to linebacker Edgerton Hartwell as “Hartwell Brown” for reasons I can’t begin to fathom. It has since been fixed, thanks to Raiders exec John Herrera, who was nice enough to bring it to my attention, and without the ridicule it deserved.

I have no idea who Hartwell Brown is, although I suspect I covered a sporting event which included someone named Hartwell Brown in my distant past. That’s the story I’m sticking with, anyway.

UPDATE: A check of the Stanford football media guide lists a “Hartwell Brown” for the years 1990-91. I covered Stanford in 1990 and 1991. Seventeen years later, he winds up being quoted in a Raiders blog.

Saw a video of the team sessions indiv. drills and Todd Watkins is a beast.

  7. mcfaddenswaggon Says:

good job, hopefully huff can speed his game up, and deangelo can stop getting burned by 3rd string receivers.

  8. Thec Says:

I can see why DMAC doesnt have swivel, he doesnt need it. He is way to fast.

    Watkins is HARD

  9. Oakglenn Says:

Sounds like some guys were tired in the second session. Hello Brad Rolle. Time to get this team into shape.

  10. Thec Says:

Man, i keep watching DMAC take the pitch from russell running right. Man i am glad he didnt go to the cooks.

  11. WashingtonRaider Says:

Somebody please tell me when Hall is going to step up and act like he’s worth the contract that Asomugha so deserved. Everything i keep hearing about him is that he’s getting scorched!

maybe they should do more of those 10 play drills where you can’t come out for a rest.but it has been only one week of camp.

  13. GRaider Says:

I would go with the story about confusing Hartwell with Ricky Brown.

  14. K-Rock Says:

    Jason Jones blog…

Russell also showed some zip on passes over the middle. The highlight as a laser that whizzed by the head of linebacker Jeff Ulbrich’s head to tight end Zach Miller.

It probably would have been a good 30-yard touchdown, assuming Miller would have run over the DB trying to tackle him.

Russell showed good pocket awareness and knew when to step up and get rid of the ball.

Russell found Todd Watkins (who else?) for an acrobatic grab just after Watkins failed to hold on to a pass after being hit.

The offensive line looked better for the most part. Kwame Harris did a good job of riding outside rushers pass Russell and to the grass. Cornell Green looked better, too.

Harris is definitely improving with each practice.

The second-team offensive line had its moments.

Chris Morris and Seth Wand opened a huge hole on the right side on a draw play for Justin Fargas. That combination also made a pair of good blocks on a screen pass for Michael Bush during a two-minute drill.

The blocking from the running backs improved. Adimchinobe Echemandu blocked 49ers defensive end Justin Smith to give Russell time to find Chris McFoy for a touchdown.

Darrren McFadden continues to impress. He caught a wheel route during seven-on-seven and his speed left Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis chasing him.

McFadden also looked good running the ball. When there were creases to run through, he hit them with speed and looked to make moves at the second level.

    Washington Raider:

I hear you. We’re paying big bucks to Hall and he’s getting burned or scorched for touchdowns. Three times if you count the over throw. Maybe he’s taking too many chances, they said that he known for taking chances and getting burned once in a while. Three times isn’t once in a while…it’s scary.

Gallery was worked over by Justin Smith. Come on Gallery, you improved big time last year from “bust” too “good” and you’re expected to do “great” this year. Hey, just do “good” at least.

Huff a step late on all those throws his way. Come on Huff, you’re suppose to excel with Gibril showing the way.

Thank you Darren for the excellent run, we needed some sunshine.

As for Trevor Scott, he may have had a good practice, but I think he’s too soft and too light (weight wise) and he’s being dominated in our practices…I think he’ll be cut.

Great comments from Jason Jones…at least there were many positives. Now I’m uplifted.

Ya, none of us can wait. Forget the sky, the outer universe is going to be the limit with Darren…Wow.

I also want to see how much we utilize Zack Miller, if Bush is productive as a “power-runner,” especially in the red zone.
I hope our receivers step up and I hope to see Gibril with some big time hits. The kind of hits that put doubt and fear to opposing receivers.

  32. Howie's Neck Roll Says:

What channel and time is the game this Friday?

  33. Blackholepriest Says:

That’s mainly why you don’t react to every report because some guy’s can/t appreciate certain things and others vice versa. At best these reports are viewed with a narrow lense. Not to put a damper on anything Jerry’s giving us the best he has to offer but watching the film is the nly way to really get a true grasp of what’s going on in camp and he just doesn’t have that advantage. So I’m very pleased with what we get but honestlt it’s peacemeal at best.

Don’t get too high nor too low based on these reports, you’ll see soon enough what the real deal is. However by all reports Kwame Harris is responding to coaching and as I said B4 coaching is evrything assuming you have talent to work with. And Cable is one of the best at what he does.

Can’t wait to see Russell to Watkins I’m starting to believe, that connection could be special.

  34. Blackholepriest Says:

Coaching on the Oline is everything and Cable is the best at what he does. Harris is at the right place at the right time.

What channel and time is the game this Friday?

Judging by the past games against SF, fox and cbs (2 and 5 for most)
fox usualy talks bout the niners and analyse them while cbs does the same thing only with the raiders. I suggest watching ch 5.

  36. R8R_ERN Says:

watching the “Napa Film”, Harris seems to be doing a good job so far.

Mc Fadden looks like he isstuck on fast forwardwhen he runs.

Watkins is the the New “Mr. Stick’em”.

Curry and Walker disappoint me, they couldn’t get any seperation like the other recievers.

Overall, thumbs up. Can’t wait to see the real deal Friday.

    GOOOOOO RRRAAAAIIIIDDDDEEERRRSS!

Carter, JLH, and Watkins just made my top 5.

Tackling is a lot about attitude….I don’t think he has it.

    Maybe be catches on somewhere…..

Sure would like to see Sir Talks a lot live up to the hype…could be another lonely year for Nnamdi if Hall cant sack up.

Weak links are exploited fast in the NFL

    Carry on Nation

  39. dick v Says:

Stu should have just kept his mouth shut and try to make the team on specials. I am sure Al would have extewnded that much to any of his draft picks who has logged a good no. of starts. Al hates to bust on his picks. Oh well Maybe he can make the Sabercats.

  40. dick v Says:

Nice to hear that Scott is making progress. i was begining to think he did not even belong on the field. I am sure that he was wondering the same. Tyvon Branch should beat out Wesley. Now I am starting to understand why the Cheifs coaching staff soured on Wesley: they rather develop a young player.

  41. dick v Says:

BHP, I hear you about the need to watch the coaches tape to get a full grasp of the situation. All we got right now is who is making plays and who is not.
It seems like we might not have one play maker in the recieving core: Curry is still struggling to get seperation, Zacxh miller is a solid player, but not a play maker, Javon never came home from Vegas. Dmac may have more on his plate than even he imagined. He may be the only play maker on the offense in 08. The others are just role players. I am excited to see Watkins because he may have something, but he has yet to play a game yet so I do not want to get excited.

  42. dick v Says:

I guess Dmac has yet to do anything yet, but it sounds like he is as good as advertised and I have seen him dominate in the Sec for the past two years. It is saying something, but we wont know until MNF.

  43. K-Rock Says:

    Dick V..

What gives you the impression that Miller is not a playmaker?

Everything that has been said about him says the opposite.

Just needs to the o-line to allow him off the line.

  44. tim c 40yrs of raider nation Says:

when is the nfl network reply on? i hate not being allowed west coast feed 4 local channels

  45. Howie's Neck Roll Says:

    Thanks R.A.W….

I looked it up…it is on CBS at 7:00.

Usually get Plunkett and Jim Gray…one other guy too…forget his name though! Anyone know why the pre-season game against Tennessee is on FOX? Both AFC teams….???

  46. dick v Says:

K rock, I think he can move the Chains, but I am not sure you dial up a play for him the way you would a Randy Moss, Steve Smith, LT, AP, Larry Fitzgerald, …pro bowl players. I am not sure that he is on the level of a Gates, Gonzales, Witten, Winslow, and Shockey ( I know I am going to hear it for this one). If the Raiders need a td to win a game they will look for Dmac and maybe Walker. Curry has shown flashes, and Miller looks good, but I can’t call either one of them playmakers until they actually do it: consistently. We have seen Javon play big on several different occasions; although, he may just be damaged goods now.

  47. dick v Says:

the Raiders may have a hard time playong from behind this season.
I look forwardto seeing Curry , Miller, and Javon make plays this yearalong with dmac, but I have my doubts with all of thewm: Miller may be slow to develop in the passing game due to the need for him to pass block to shore up the protection.

  51. Howie's Neck Roll Says:

This Packers deal on NFL Network is pretty sweet. It’s called Packers family night…basically they scrimmage each other in fromt of all the fans…its cool….wish the Raiders had something like that…or at least it was televised….is that what the Raider NAtion Celebration is?

  52. dick v Says:

K rock, McCown was expected to be the Starter. Henne should get some snaps this season, and I think he will be a stud if they can give him some players. McCown is a nice player to throw in there when you are rebuilding.

  53. RF Says:

“Thanks for the link Dakota monte poodle has hated on Al and the organization as a whole for quite some time now. If he is so concerned with the mental health of Javon Walker why isn’t he playing the good samaritan and reaching out to the guy. Its easy to sit here and point things out and cast blame.”

    ……

Are you out of your mother loving mind? On the scale of stupid comments here this one has easily passed the previous high water mark.

Since when is it Monte Poole’s job to take a concern for the health of a subject that he is reporting on? I mean, I guess you do have a point. When a player gets injured in a game, why don’t Al Michaels and John Madden sprint down to the field to provide medical assistance? No. It’s so easy for them to sit there and just point it out…

Now we know who’s fault Hurricane Katrina was. The reporters on the ground, obviously. They could have tried to stop the storm.

This is awesome logic that I just never considered. If the press would just step in and right the ship instead of reporting on things, we wouldn’t have half the problems we have.

Since Monte Poole, in your country fried, slow mind, should be a “Good Samaritan” and take responsibility for Walker’s mental health, riddle me this, trailblazer, why in the heck should he stop there? How about Monte be a Good Samaritan and take control of this team from the 80 year old f’n mad man that’s running it, while he’s on his Good Samaritan crusade? No…then he’s out of his element, right? Then he needs to just stick to being a reporter…which brings us back to what he’s doing at present day, being a reporter, and reporting on things that he has ZERO control over.

I used to think you Davis kool aid drinkers were kind of funny but now you guys are honestly scaring me. 5 last place seasons in a row is having the effect on you guys that the Overlook Hotel had on Jack Torrance. Why doesn’t Monte Poole be a Good Samaritan… LOL. It’s getting unreal in here.

  56. Finzel Says:

Numerous Bay Area reporters realize that Al kinda dumped on the community by moving to LA. Some of them, the older ones, might still feel stung just a bit. I felt that tremor 2000 miles away, I remember. If Al Davis rewards the loyalty of you guys by moving the team again … I’m not sure I could take that without calling for some kind of coup.

“Objective” is 19 positive articles to 61 negative articles. A fair ratio, you have to earn media fawning, Davis himself has said the NFL culture is about winning. Victory will bring a shiny image back to the team. Until then, expect the worst.

And as far as “hating” is concerned, I’m interested to see which players (usually three to five) will be identified as this year’s foci of public indignation if the Raiders suffer through another losing season. Let’s see, strong running, strong pass D, weak passing and pass blocking means runs on third and long so the rushing average per carry will be spiffy, and our average per carry allowed will be a strikingly similar number. Booming kicks, likely the usual poor coverage on returns. The result is six and ten, maybe eight and eight if fate is kind. But upward for sure from what we’ve been getting.

  57. bleed4raiders Says:

I believe attitude will play astrong role in the season. Winning teams have winning attitudes, wich has been a mojor void through out the team for some time now, but reports also indicate improvements in our major concern areas aswell, but with out being too optimistic or pessimistic imma wait (while evaluating during pre-seas) for monday night against the broncos.

  58. CopenhagenFan Says:

    Stu cut??? what a suprise….NOT!

We should trade Walker and a pick for Steve Smith! do it do it do it Al!

  59. Batman Says:

Why do I have a ill feeling, in the middle of my gut ? I know its just practice. I know its very early in training camp. I know players dont start putting out yet. I know all these things to be true. So why do I have an awful feeling. Maybe Im a little shelled shocked from the last five years,Maybe I think we have more serious issues with Lane Kiffin, as far as if his heart being into it. This Javon thing is really bothering me. Is Al really senile ? I felt this year the organization as whole, would be on the same page at the same time. I know its early, Im not casting them off, but damm it. This is ugly. According to Jerry`s last three reports looks like were going backwards.

  60. DirtyBathWater Says:

Panther would be the dumbest team to trade a player like steve smith I won’t even ponder the thought. I love the news flying around our boys. Let me first start by making an announce ment ……im gonna be a DADDY!!!!!! Man im so happy yeeeeehooo!!!! I got my raider baby on the way!! If its a boy I’ll name him raider, a girl I’l name her raiderette sounds good right!??? Any ways stui I bet it hit him real hard that what everyone said about him is true that he sucks, how in the hell did he actually think he was gonna make it of all places in washington, where they are used to having the kind of safety that’s not only fast but can hit like a mule and make plays……..like mr taylor R.I.P. Brother and that guy from LSU landry. Stu didn’t stand a chance cause he can’t hit don’t make plays and angle of pursuit sucks. Maybe u can play in canada! Lol Raider football is exciting I just can’t wait till we play so we can see for ourselves what the team looks like. We have to keep in mind that we aren’t gonna show every thin just vanilla stuff, shoot who knows what we a running against 49ers in practice, basic run and pass plays?? Need more info on russell and carter please jerry

  61. DirtyBathWater Says:

Batman that feeling will go away im sure after we play the first preseason game and you get to see with your own eyes if the fire is burning in our team to win this year and I think we are there. Football is finally here and when the grove is on it all starts to come together as a team that’s why im happy we have preseason so we can shake the rust and sort things out

  62. DirtyBathWater Says:

I can’t help but be happy for kwamee for responding to coaching and getting better maybe that extra boost of confidence will help him to revamp his attitude because he’s good enough to make it to the nfl he just has to realize it for himself that he belongs here

  63. ChargersChoke Says:

I told you Hall can’t cover tall recievers , he’s overrated and now overpaid, I live in Atlanta and have watched him play for years, he’s only good at covering short speedy recievers which the NFC South had plenty of!

  64. DirtyBathWater Says:

Man hall will be fine this year it’s only practice id take my chances with this guy because height don’t make you good he played againts t.o. And the recievers in arizona n.o. They got tall recievers too…… he may get beat sometimes but he makes it up by making plays so I don’t buy into the overrated thing because he is credible and his play shows it

  65. ChargersChoke Says:

Arizona is not in the NFC South nor is Dallas, T.O. schooled the guy when Dallas played Atlanta here but did get frustrated one play and spit at Hall. I just have seen him time after time unable to shut down tall WRs , he’s no Darrell Green.

  66. La Milicia Negra Says:

Good to hear about my boys Tyvon Branch and Trevor Scott… I would like to hear how branch is returning the ball.. and if Scott gets any tries and LB (which he probably don’t)

  67. DirtyBathWater Says:

Morning LMN! Yeah im stoked about branch Im with ya on branch and the return game I sure hope he’s a gamebreaker type. Though im not sold on the other guy scott its good to finally here good news bout him

  68. Raidermvp Says:

Who is going to start at SLB on Friday? (Williams, Thomas, or Brown)

  69. Al's Bedpan Attendant Says:

I hope Branch brings the lumber on special teams. It’d be nice to see several turnovers generated by our special teams that lead to good field position.

  70. CopenhagenFan Says:

RaiderMvp…my money is on Thomas…He played well last year!

  71. La Milicia Negra Says:

    DBW… isn’t that a aston? =)LOL

I think Scotts problem is about timing, when he gets that right I think he
ll fare better, the false starts and so on, all comes down to timing… he is very fast, so he’ll get around that corner, he just need to know he doesn’t need to jump the whistle..

  72. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Cfan…

yeah though I’ve heard a lot of good news about ricky brown, I still think it will be Thomas..

I remember Robert Thomas being a beast in madden, but then again so was Napoleon Harris.. :/

  73. Raider4life Says:

LMN–Robert Thomas hasn’t been a beast since UCLA. I’m hoping Hartwell steps it up and they move Morrison outside. Don’t matter if its Williams, Thomas or Brown tho that’s a weak spot if one of them there.

  74. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Raider4life…

duh? why do you think we got a former 1st rounder fro free?? because he hadn’t been a beast…

but that was not what I wrote… I said I remembered him being a beast in madden…

  75. MaineRaida Says:

    post 48:

Just read that McCown is the starter in Miami.
Things that make you go… wtf?

yes better them than us…which is exactly the sad situation we were in just a year ago…wtf indeed! Seems like a bad dream now.

  76. CopenhagenFan Says:

LMN…I like Ricky Brown and they way he moves on the field…I just think that Thomas is more solid. It could be that Ricky kicks in and gets more solid in his technique and skills and make a move. All 3 of the LB’s fighting for that position are good athletes so one of them should be able to get it done.

Every time I see Sam Williams, I get all excited because he has the physical tools to be a MONSTER….but then my woody subsides when he goes down on the DL every friggin’ year!

  77. La Milicia Negra Says:

so hasn’t Napoleon Harris… that was my point!

  78. Raider Bong Says:

you guys hear that stu schweigart got cut by the redskins?

  79. CopenhagenFan Says:

I move Zach Crockett to tailback in Madden and just run over people….that’s fun, but it don’t get it done in the real world ha ha

  80. La Milicia Negra Says:

    C-Fan..

yeah me too, as I recall Thomas has some good hands, so with Howard and Morrison, our pass D will be better with Thomas, the question is, whos is best in Run-D if that would be Brown I would root for him… I just think from week 1 Thomas will have the upperhand..

  81. La Milicia Negra Says:

    C-Fan…

yeah Madden is fun, haven’t played in some years, my controllers went down =) LOL but its fun because its not realistic, it imitates the real stuff. Man I wasted a lot of time and tobacco on that game =)

btw I cant call you CF because it reminds me of Civil Forsvaret… and that isn’t flattering =)

Ts an aston!! You know I really did forget about this guys speed comming off the edge. Didn’t this guy run a 4.4 or 4.5?, that is freaking scary speed for a DE, ala Julius peppers ran a 4.4 comming in and I nearly had a heartattack watching a guy his size run that fast! I can see scoot being used in sitnations where he can flat out rush the passer outside while big boys collapse the middle providing nowhere to go

Cop, you didnt read Jerrys report above ?

  90. CopenhagenFan Says:

The Jevon Walker situation is easy to read. He has a bum knee, he got worked over in Vegas, and now he’s not in shape and can’t perform.

He’s bummed out, and feeling bad over popping off about Denver and how he deserves this and that, and then he’s not in a position to back it up in Oakland, so he considers retiring. Kiffin thinks it weak and sends him to Al and Al gives him a boost and tells him that he believes in him just like he did Plunkett and that’s why he’s paying him a fortune, because he’s a class receiver.

Now we just have to see if Jevon has the balls to stop his BS and get it done on the field and make Al right.

“In the A.M. blog, I referred to linebacker Edgerton Hartwell as “Hartwell Brown” for reasons I can’t begin to fathom. It has since been fixed, thanks to Raiders exec John Herrera, who was nice enough to bring it to my attention, and without the ridicule it deserved.”

If John brought the mistake to Jerry’s attention, then he must read this blog right? Or Jerry sends it to him for editing, lol.

  92. CopenhagenFan Says:

    Misterbrown…oh yeah….he corrected Hartwell’s name.

  93. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

I liked the Schweigert pick when we made it. He showed outstanding ballhawk skills at Purdue, as we all know. He also had good measurables, and it was definately a need pick. I have to think his skills deteriorated - I wonder if he would even start at Purdue anymore.

Man we sure haven’t had much luck drafting safeties in the last few decades…Derrick Gibson, Patrick Bates, Stu, Stacey Toran. Is there a jinx on the position resulting from the Tatum-Stingley massacre? Our two best safeties since Tatum have died in their prime, we’ve drafted busts, and Rod Woodson, playing well, KO’d his knee here to end his career. Makes me worry a little for Mr. Huff…

  94. La Milicia Negra Says:

    DBW

    Yup, fast as hell =)

“The former Mid-American Conference standout has every measurable Davis looks for in a player. In fact, he practically put on a clinic at the Buffalo pro day just prior to the draft, running the 40-yard dash in 4.54 seconds, recording a 33.5-inch vertical and running the short shuttle in 4.19 seconds.

In comparison, second overall pick Chris Long, a fellow DE, ran the 40 in 4.75 seconds and the sixth player taken, DE/LB Vernon Gholston, ran it in 4.65 seconds — both slower than Scott.”

I am afraid that Trevor Scott is just a smaller version of Brayton. He will be on the team for the next five years for no apparent reason other than Al drafted him.

Good for him though….as Eric Ferrell would say, he does make more money than most of us.

  129. HendersonNVRaider Says:

    Schweigert Gets Sliced!!!!

    Sendoff and Practice Update
Stuart Schweigert was by no means a lock to make this football team, but I didn’t think the safety would be cut before the second preseason game, either. Schweigert, who was released yesterday when the Redskins signed safety Patrick Ghee, had some limitations to his game, and being asked to back up LaRon Landry at free safety in this system is no small chore.

The Redskins are impressed with how rookie safeties Chris Horton and Kareem Moore look, and Landry is scheduled to return to practice from his hamstring injury this week. And veteran Vernon Fox knows the system well, excels on special teams and is there to back up starting strong safety Reed Doughty. So there’s a bit of depth.

Having another guy who has played in the league is imperative, and the staff here decided pretty quickly that Schweigert wasn’t going to make the team. The fact that Ghee lacks much prior NFL experience, much less starting experience, made the move a little more surprising … but obviously there were some things that might have shown up on the film of Sunday’s game that the coaches didn’t love.

We’ll see what Jim Zorn and others have to say about the move today.

The Redskins fortified their depth at linebacker by signing Alfred Fincher last week, so I wasn’t surprised they let a LB go to make room for a player at another position - the realities of this 80-man roster limit in a long training camp like this cannot be overemphasized.

  130. Raider4life Says:

Lil Stui Schwiegert will be the first transexual in the WNBA, but will get cut after one game because of her poor defense.

  131. BART Bridge Balla Says:

    What it do Nation?
Finally got to see some video of our team, and hear about them up against another team. Initial thoughts:

    1. McFadden looks FAST!!! The few plays I have seen of him he was fast and decisive running the ball.

    2. Todd Watkins looks good catching the ball. Ronald Curry does not.

    3. Deangelo Hall will be better in pre-season. These sessions with the 49ers are just practices after all. This is the time for Hall to take a lot of risks and see what he can get away with, rather than playing it conservative.

    4. Trevor Scott needs to step it up in the pre-season and get on the practice squad, then bulk-up for next year.

    5. Huff put on a lot of muscle in the off-season, he needs to get into a rythm of running everyday and he will trim down and be faster by the start of the season.

    6. Prediction: Sam Williams will start the season at SOLB, and Ricky Brown will end the season there.

  132. i dress in black Says:

    surprising?

    1) Who is the greatest player in Raiders history?

    48.7% Marcus Allen, RB (1982-92):
    Nearly 13,000 yards rushing-receiving, NFL’s No. 2 with 123 rushing TDs.

    16.4% Tim Brown, WR (1988-2004):
Heisman Trophy success story who was one of NFL’s best. Had nine 1,000-yards seasons.

    12.6% Howie Long, DE (1981-93):
Second-round surprise piled up 84 sacks and eight Pro Bowls in 13 seasons.

    7.7% Ken Stabler, QB (1970-79):
”The Snake” made four Pro Bowls and ranked among passing leaders for the 1970s.

    5.5% Fred Biletnikoff, WR (1965-78):
Hall of Famer who made six Pro Bowls and held most franchise receiving records at retirement.

    4.3% Art Shell, OL (1968-1982):
Eight-time Pro Bowler who anchored the line, later coached the team to the AFC title game.

    2.6% Gene Upshaw, OL (1967-81):
Hall of Famer started 207 consecutive games, played on two Super Bowl winners.

    1.1% Ted Hendricks, LB (1975-1983):
Key defensive player on three Super Bowl winners, versatile linebacker.

    0.6% Willie Brown, CB (1967-78):
Hall of Famer who made Pro Bowl his first six seasons with team.

    0.5% Dave Casper, TE (1974-80, 1984):
”The Ghost” was named first-team All-Pro four years in a row, elected to Hall of Fame.

  133. i dress in black Says:

Personally, i think Stabler should have gotten more than 7%.

  134. Derek Says:

why do the Raiders hold onto scrubs like Brayton, Sam Williams and lil Stui for years while others teams see them for a few months and realize they’re garbage and cut them.

I believe holding onto scrubs longterm is the primary reason for the Raiders failing for the past 5 years.

  135. M Says:

    re: post 132

Greatest Raider? Jim Otto, no discussion necessary.

  136. Dakota Says:

    Derek,

Why do we hold on to scrubs for so long? Because Al Davis can’t admit a mistake. It takes years for him to cut loose scrubs like Jordan, Stu, Sims, Gibson etc because Al either drafted them or signed them as FAs and he refuses to admit that they were flops until he absolutely has to. Even when he realizes that the player sucks azz, he is paranoid about releasing them because the Broncos, Chiefs, or Pats might pick them up, so instead he tries to trade the player when everyone in the NFL knows the player is just going to be released.

    We badly need a GM.

I have an appointment, I will talk later.

M, I’m so ready to retire.

    Peace.

  173. MR Says:

re: Walker and Al’s pep talk….Pep talks don’t cure depression. That’s why head cases in the NFL rarely, if ever, turn it around. Al thinking he can motivate Walker by slapping in the Autumn Wind CD and running a slide show of past great Raiders’ receivers is right there with him believing that Kerry Collins or Aaron Brooks would lead us to the playoffs. It’s another testament to how clueless he is anymore.

re: Stabler being in the Hall…It’s a tough call. Is there anyone in the hall right now who fell as far short of their potential, due to alcoholism, as Stabler did? Is there anyone in the hall who’s boasted of alcoholism the way he did in his book? No doubt there’s some guys in that hall who hit the sauce but they didn’t make it part of their public image, the way Stabler did. In fact, they were pretty much the opposite…keeping that part of their life private. Stats alone…he should be in. But it’s a hall of “FAME”. Stats aren’t the only thing factored in.

re: Marcus voted best all time Raider… LOL. Can’t sit well with the old man. Talk about his fans turning on him…um, yeh, like Al cares what his fans think. Al’s fans are the lowest on the pecking order (even lower than the head coach). In Al Davis’s world, Raider fans are the ice in the bathroom troth. So, fans can vote for whomever they want as their all time Raider. Al will not be deterred. He already knows it’s Mervyn Fernandez.

    Back to all time Raiders:

    Raiders all time passer- Stabler.

Raiders all time receiver- Tim Brown.

Raiders all time rusher- Marcus Allen.

So much for the vertical game.

  174. Ryan Says:

Stabler is the reason I am a Raiders fan. Ever since 1976, (when I was 5) he was my favorite football player.

  175. McRaider Says:

How about Michael Irving? How many times was he found with drugs?

  176. KoolKell Says:

A fit, healthy, committed Walker could be a No. 1 wideout, surely aiding the development of young quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

But Walker, 29, isn’t fit or healthy or committed. He has neither the body nor the mind of a playmaker.

Good call on the Draft McFadden, Dakota.

  183. KoolKell Says:

Sounds like JaMarcus and the Raider Offense have no wideouts as an intergal part of the offense right now.

  184. La Milicia Negra Says:

I have always liked Ted Hendricks

  185. MR Says:

McRaider, regarding Stabler’s case, it’s not about him merely drinking. Most of the people in the Hall drank. It’s about Stabler bragging about it, in lengthy detail, in his book, and in other venues. You also have to factor in how far short alcohol cut his career. His body was shot by his mid twenties. While he played people joked about it but I think the HOF voters are factoring his wasted potential into his HOF prospects. Doesn’t seem fair, but that’s life. And, I also wouldn’t rule out the Bob Podeky incident. Writers do get each others’ backs. And they tend to remember when one of their own, who’s squeaky clean and far from a drug user, gets pulled over by the police in Stabler’s home town and they find cocaine in his car, shortly after he wrote a negative article on Stabler. Hey, if I were voting, Stabler would be in. I’m just giving you the devil’s advo.

Regarding Irvin: Irvin did not boast of his off field antics the way Stabler did. I also don’t believe as much potential went to waste with Irvin. He could not have been a heavy drug user, considering how good of shape he was in and how well he still played, even into his late 20’s and early 30s, unless he just has superhuman genetics. He partied, but not like Stabler.

  186. Tommy Trojan Says:

The defense is encouraging considering our two best defensive linemen were not practicing and neither was the best player on our team. The 49ers look to be a 5 or 6 win team this year, so I won’t get too excited, especially considering it’s practice…… But the signs are encouraging.

    hahahaa

  189. Mistabrown Says:

Rob Ryan is working his magic on D Hall already ?

Relax ladies these are camp notes lets watch a pre-season game or 3 before yawl get your pannies in a knot.

  190. MR Says:

Kool Kell, amen. And, contrary to popular opinion in this corner of the world, Monte Poole absolutely nailed it. But of course…as we’ve learned yesterday, it’s not Monte Poole’s job to report on the Raiders. It’s his job to be a Good Samaritan and help Javon!

  191. Mistabrown Says:

Andrew Walters arm is always tired whats up with that?

Hey Andrew let Tui carry JR’s jock and save your arm for practice, thanks buddy!

  192. KoolKell Says:

Yeah, I saw that idiot talk about M Poole yesterday.

  193. Mistabrown Says:

Sdf whats so funny? The Broncos have had our number for the last 15 years.

  194. Raider4life Says:

Who says Walker isn’t committed? Wait a couple weeks and the guys with the butterfly nets and the truck with the square wheels will be picking him up in Alameda. Then he will be committed alright.

  195. Andrews mom Says:

I might have to change my name to Moms boot up Andrews rear.
    Or FIRE ANDREW

  196. MR Says:

Ryan, I like Stabler, too. And, I like his book. Personally, I have no problem with Stabler. But he’ll never get into the hall. I think the Podeky incident seals the deal on that.

  197. M Says:

    Mistabrown,

    good day to you,

DeAngelo is underperforming to lull opposing OC’s into game planning toward him, away from Nnamdi naturally, so that Hall can set a new intercept record this year. :)

and AW is has finally realized that getting a big league paycheck for loafing ain’t that bad of a deal. Points to good sensibilty in the young man. Why work when you can get paid the same for inactivity?

  199. MR Says:

What cracks me up is how Al Davis shuns the press, then expects the press to defend his and the team’s honor. If the same incident happened in New England, I don’t see the press leaving it alone there, either. A high priced free agent talking retirement in the pre season? That’s going to print, no matter what team he’s on. Al and his loyal following need to just get real on this one.

  200. KoolKell Says:

    MR,

A lot of the simple-minded Raider fans have become a negative, buffonish sterotype that reflects badly on ALL of us.

  201. MR Says:

    Nice riffs, Mistabrown.

  202. Mistabrown Says:

    Hey M,
AW is my fav backup of all time behind Rusty Hilger. D Hall will be ok if he ignores Rob Ryan and listens to Kiffin.

  203. outtamojo Says:

Regarding Hall-if we wanted an all or nothing corner who got consistently burned going for the intercept EVERY time, we shoulda kept Philip.

  204. Mistabrown Says:

    MR, thanks

    -waits for punchline

  205. MR Says:

We keep this up, Kell, and Oakglenn is going to accuse us of being the same person. That’s his ultimate plan B. All of the Al critics are really just one person trolling the place. Because we know there’s only one single Al Davis critic in the entire universe! It’s just good detective skill!

  206. Raider4life Says:

Mista–I’m partial to Mike Rae, David Humm or Billy Joe Hobert.

  207. MR Says:

No punchline, brown. You sounded as good as Rush.

  208. Mistabrown Says:

    Speaking of OakGlenn..

    Oh nevermind

  209. Exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

From Kansas City Chiefs One Liners @ PFT.com

Big Sexy is still down on the team’s chances: “The NFL could legalize the use of HGH, steroids, artificial limbs and handguns for the home team at Arrowhead Stadium this season and the Chiefs would still struggle to win four games in 2008.”

    lol lol lol

  210. Mistabrown Says:

Mike Rae, I dont remember him.

  211. Raider4life Says:

Mike Rae was a backup to Snake and actually won a game as a starter against Houston. I think he went to USC before Vince Evans.

  212. M Says:

Mike Rae, played about as much as Tui, was about as effective as Donald Hollas. Not much to remember Mistabrown.

  213. Raider4life Says:

Actually my fav was Vince Evans. Never a dull moment when he was in.

  214. M Says:

    Plunkett wasn’t a bad back-up for Pastorini. :)

  215. SilverNblack666 Says:

    MR

    RUSH

    IS A BAND!!!

  216. SilverNblack666 Says:

not some fat three toed sloth that wants to kill drug dealers while illegally importing his own drug of choice from Mexico.

    Seriously RUSH is a band!!

  217. M Says:

Question. Were Marc Wilson, Jay Schroeder and Kerry Collins all the same person? It all gets so confusing…

  218. SilverNblack666 Says:

Raider4Life you remember Vince Evans he had a side arm like Gannon and was our backup I think he wore #11.

  219. Finzel Says:

“Hartwell Brown” - Jerry, there was a old-time ballplayer named Hardy Brown, a linebacker for the St. Louis Cardinals, mostly. He had a mean streak, and a forearm shot that broke a lot of noses in those pre-facebar days. Maybe your Dad told you about him.

#211 - Rae won TWO games in 1976, Houston and the last game against SD.

  220. SilverNblack666 Says:

Jay Schroeder and Kerry Collins saw a Super Bowl, Mark Wilson couldn’t even see the centers ass.

  221. Raider4life Says:

666—Vince Evans use to sling it side arm and also could still run even when he was past 40. Schroeder, Collins, Wilson, Jeff George & AW are all one in the same. Big arm, no legs & no heart.

  222. Oakglenn Says:

Good to see MR and mistaclown renewing their friendship.
