Training camp, Day 13
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 at 7:29 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from Tuesday’s Raiders practice:
– Whatever is ailing Nnamdi Asomugha is also ailing Jarrod Cooper, as both missed practice. Asomugha, according to Lane Kiffin, has been treated with IVs and is expected back Wednesday morning.
– JaMarcus Russell continued to spend much of his time in seven-on-sevens and team sessions playing it safe, throwing to backs swinging out of the backfield or over the middle.
He may be making Rich Gannon seem like a mad bomber, but it is what Kiffin and the offensive staff want as part of Russell’s development. Still, it is at least a little disturbing that few wide receivers seem to be breaking into the clear.
There doesn’t appear to be a clear No. 1 receiver on the roster after 13 days of camp, meaning the Raiders _ and big-bucks free agent signee Javon Walker in particular _ have time to get better with the first preseason game coming up Friday night against San Francisco.
When asked about the dearth of open receivers, Kiffin noted that the Raiders have a good coverage secondary as well as Walker’s one-practice-a-day schedule. It didn’t help that Drew Carter, who looked terrific in early practices but seems to have slowed lately, was given practice off to get his legs back under him.
“I think the quarterback is doing exactly what we want and we’d like to get open more often for him,” Kiffin said.
The Raiders secondary was without Asomugha, Cooper and starting strong safety Gibril Wilson, who is resting a sore knee which Kiffin said is not serious. Wilson probably won’t see much time against San Francisco, Kiffin said.
– When Russell plays, Kiffin said he would be careful to make sure he has the best possible supporting cast in terms of pass protection. The best pass blockers are likely to play as long as Russell does.
– Wide receivers coach James Lofton continued to school his young receivers, hoping to get more consistency. A drop by Drisan James, who turned late and let a Marques Tuiasosopo pass glance off his hands, caused Lofton to bellow, “Make the play, make the play, make the play!”
When cornerback Darrick Brown made a more aggressive play on a corner route than wide receiver Chaz Schilens, with Brown knocking it away, Lofton yelled, “Be aggressive! You have to go up and get it. You wait for it, you get nothing.”
Arman Shields was lectured for catching a pass and leaving the ball where it could be knocked loose by a defender.
“You’ve got no chance with that ball in the inside arm. No chance,” Lofton said.
Shields also dropped one of Russell’s few deep throws after getting behind Stanford Routt.
– Defensive end Greg Spires has come on of late and made a nice play when he blew up a pitch to Louis Rankin the backfield.
– Some of the day’s best intermediate throws were not made by Russell, but by Tuiasosopo, particularly a sharp, perfectly-timed 20-yard out to Todd Watkins in front of DeAngelo Hall.
– Watkins later dropped a pass _ on a Tuiasosopo throw which as slightly behind him. It was one of his few drops since camp opened.
– Quarterback Andrew Walter rested a sore arm again but Kiffin said he expected him to play against San Francisco.
– Kiffin said running back Darren McFadden will get enough preseason time to determine how well he takes a hit and to prove his ball-security issues while at Arkansas are behind him. He will not return kickoffs against the 49ers.
– The mission for Michael Bush Friday night couldn’t be more clear. Kiffin wants a hammer.
“Run physical, run hard,” Kiffin said. “He’s 246 pounds _ don’t run like a 200-pounder . . . he’s the one big guy we have, and if he can what we hope he can do I think we’re in a real good position there.”
– Robert Thomas has been running with the first team at strong side linebacker for three days, but apparently that has more to do with a previously undisclosed injury to Ricky Brown than it does with Brown moving on to the first team.
“Ricky being banged up and not out there is a big reason for that,” Kiffin said. “Robert is playing `Mike’ and `Sam’ for us. Robert’s got to play special teams and I’ve talked to him about that, and he’s going to have to do it all to make the team.”
Kiffin said of the linebacker position: “There are only two guys that I know are going to make this team and the rest of the guys had better play special teams and contribute.”
Brown, Kiffin said, has knee and back issues but should play against the 49ers.
– NFL officials are on hand at practice and will go over rules changes with players, coaches and the media. It was amusing to watch an official throw a flag on Hall for pass interference against Arman Shields, only to get an earful from Hall of Fame corner and secondary coach Willie Brown.
“He doesn’t have the right of way. Don’t let him tell you that `right of way’ stuff,” Brown said to Sheilds before a brief debate with the official about what constitutes legal and illegal contact.
– Jack Tatum attended his first practice of the season and was signing autographs for fans who were invited guests, as the Raiders hosted radio advertisers. Tatum said he hadn’t yet seen Wilson play at safety with the Giants but was encouraged to hear about his hitting and tackling with the Giants.
“Good, that’s what we need,” Tatum said.
– All eyes were in the south end zone when Russell was stretched out on the ground, with trainer Rod Martin working on his knee. No worries. Russell got back up and rejoined drills.

lol that’s weird and a bit creepy
August 5th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
The lack of true number one receiver is very disheartening. I do not feel even remotely secure with Walker.
August 5th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
What kind of loser wants to be the first to post on a blog. Go root for the Donkeys.
August 5th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

August 5th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
We need to do something about our WR. I believe if Javon doesn’t show Fri. we will be looking for a WR by Mon. cuz we let him go!
August 5th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
wow i think we got another internet-tough guy on our hands. Leave this blog troll..you are probably some donkey fan.

Who was our number one receiver last year??? Porter??? Since ‘04 Porter has exactly 2 more TD’s in Oakland than I do. And one of those came in his last game. Not much for a #1. We’ll be fine.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Oak
That’s my point! we need better tools for Jam. Ignoring the lack of progress of our Wr. is not going to help us win games.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Oakglenn you are retarded. We didn’t have a number 1 reciever last year, that’s your point?
We went 4-12 last year.
You should be ashamed of yourself.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Anyway we haven’t had the most impressive passing O in a while… Better a Wr would fix that.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
El Dirty let me try this. Let’s say Walker is making his retirement speech right now as I’m typing this, and we don’t sign anyone else. Well, in 3 receiver sets, I’ll flank Carter, Y Curry, send out Zack, keep Mike Bush the best blocking and pass catching combo back in, and split Dmac, and his 4.2 speed with soft hands. Seems like Jam has a few weapons right there.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
The Raiders have a nice set of young recievers, but the starters are troubling. Curry and Walker are seemingly a below average tandem. Carter never put it together in Carolina: in most part due to injuries. That being said, I am excited about Watkins, Holland, Shields, Higgins, and Schillens. I expect the top 3 to be an improvement over the 08 trio. Curry is quicker and stronger by most reports, Carter adds speed, and Javon is an upgrade over Jerry porter: Porter is out for atleast another month with another injury. Walker is getting reps against two pro bowl caliber corners every day in practice while porters slow ass is getting bigger on the sidelines. Both were bad signings, but at least Javon is out there working with the team.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
No, MR, er, this means you, er, Debartolo Raider, whatever you’re posting as. We didn’t have a number one receiver last year. We signed the best one available this year. Our team did go 4-12 last year, you’re Whiner team actually went 5-11.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
TROLLS TO IGNORE: ‘THIS MEANS YOU’ and ‘HendersonNvRaider’
August 5th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
I meant an improvement over the 07 trio of recievers.
They are still below average, but got by with worse last season. The run game will have to improve, and it should. If we can just get a few more plays here and there from the recieiving core, we could do some damage.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
What number one WR was available out there that I somehow missed?? Rod Smith the 55 year old WR from the Buncos??? Oh right, 39 year old Issac Bruce. Who was the best number one out there, Keeping in mind we got Dmac and DeAngelo Hall.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
All Hail The Assassin!!!
August 5th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Oak
Very true… But we would still be ignoring the Wr postion neither Curry or Carter are number 1 material, Porter barely was. We didn’t draft these great players at other positions to make them substite our lack at Wr. that’s why we sighned Javon to compliment them. These pieces work well during the game giving different looks to confuse the defense but u need ur skill positions to be what they are SKILLED… We get a bonified #1, no one will stop this offense. Curry and Carter are great #2 and #3 but that’s all they are.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
OG you are right, there was a lack of talent available in the off season at the wr position. Stallworth, Moss, Porter, Berrian, and Walker were the top players out. Of that bunch not named moss, I felt Javon was the best at that time. He was the only one has had success as a no.1.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Twenty-Ninth!
August 5th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Uh. Thirty-Second!
August 5th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
I like the whole “Use Bush as a hammer” thing.
Rock On Lane
Sack up Javon
Lookin forward to it D-Mac
See ya on the field Whiners
Carry on Nation
August 5th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Like the comments from Kiffin on Michael Bush: “Run physical, run hard.”
Like what he told Thomas, as well: That he had a talk with Thomas and Thomas was told that he’s going to have to do it all!!! to make the team. (That’s how you get guys to play better, to push to their very best and perform to the top of their level…love it.
Kiffin also told the linebackers that only 2 guys have made the team and that the others will only make the team if the can make Special-Teams or contribute in other areas. Way to go kiffin.
Great…stay on their butts, Kiffin…that’s the road to the “pie in the sky,” to many victories, to the play offs and Super Bowls.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
We can trade for Wr now… Plenty of people llokin to get out… Or teams lookin to get rid of… Steve S. Anquan…. Cohlsten…
August 5th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Receivers take a while to develop. Look at Terrel Owens. He didn’t do squat his first few years in the league and he had Hall of Famers (Rice and Young) with him. It took him awhile to develop. That happens with a lot of positions, WR certainly. Larry Fitzgerald didn’t come into the league lighting it up. He’s had two excellent years and two OK years, lining up oppo Bolden. The question is will Higgins, Watkins or someone else hopefully emerge as a decent receiver??
August 5th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Why is all this bitching and moaning going on about Walker, but yet people wanna be positive about sorry Kwame Harris! Walker is fine and if he is healthy he will be the best WR in the division hands down!!!
August 5th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
The AZ Wr’s killed it since day 1… lack of QB
August 5th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Walker and Carter should be the starters with Curry seeing the slot along with Higgins Schilens, and Watkins getting the other chances…….I feel Shields will go IR or practice squad
August 5th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Brien
At least we hear Kwami getting better… Javon has not improved… Its been said ” you practice like you play” and right now Javons going to play like crap.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
I have to admit it….I thought D-mac was not the choice.
I wanted the big fella in KC
What the hell was I thinking?
Prove me wrong Mcskinny….Please….prove me wrong.
The big fella in KC will get a taste of the new and improved Jake Grove soon enuff.
Good Pick Al, shoulda never questioned it.
Kick his ass Jake…for the Nation.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
What you guys are saying is exactly right. The reality of the situation is this was a team that was VERY FAR OFF. 4-12 is not a good team. The cupboard was pretty bare as far as talent goes. Did we fix all the holes????? Clearly, not. Did we improve??? Absolutely. Do we need a bona fide Number one WR??? Yes. OT??? Yes. DL Yes. But that sure beats DL, DB’s, QB, TE, OL, etc…
August 5th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Higgins will make some plays. I expect the mid point of the season the Raider offense to open up with 3 wide and 4 wide formations. Higgins is the type of quick guy you need to fit into smaller spots in the defense
August 5th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
we have to keep in mind that is still too early to call anyone a bust. Javon was given a big pay day, but with that came big expectations. He is obviously not handling the pressure right now. His behavior is inexplicable, and his weekend request to retire just shows he is cracking under pressure. Al had high hopes for him, and probably told him he will give him his money as long as he restore the greatness of the raiders.
Having coaches that are HOF’s and playing with talent like Namdi, and dmac probabaly made him realize he has been somewhat an imposter. a whole lot can change in a month. He has four preseason games, and a young prick head coach that will rip his ass every mis step of the way: he could end manning up. I have said b4 and I will say it again, we have seen Javon make big time plays against top talent b4. He can play, and if he can ever find his manhood again, he can be a playmaker and a no.1 reciever. Greatness doesn’t get acheived in 1 dau, and you don’t win SuperBowls in March. We can’t get too excited about the bad or good right now.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Voice of Reason Dickey V
August 5th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
James Lofton is also getting on our receivers and that will make them better. Told Drisan, 3 times, “make the play.”
Best of the day was what Lofton told Schilens:
Be aggressive, you have to go up and get it. You wait for it, you get nothing.”
What a great pickup for us at Wide Receivers Coach, plus the dischargers play book.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
is it me or are Kiffin’s little media quotes sounding like Gruden?
“There are only two guys that I know are going to make this team ….”
““He’s 246 pounds _ don’t run like a 200-pounder ..”
August 5th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Javon better start showin up…or the he’ll end up hearing it from the fans….as it should be.
Expectations are High!
Sack up or go home.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Woodson never practiced “and he was pretty damn good. Lets hope javon is just one of those guys that are great without practice. I have read every blog this training camp and don’t really think we are degressing, I think the coaches are making it more difficult.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Actually you guys what would really help things along is if someone comes out of nowhere to really shine. Think Undrafted Antonio Gates, 4th rounder Jared Allen, or the aforementioned undrafted Rod Smith who played 13 years as a pro bowl number one. You hope that Todd Watkins or Trevor Scott, or Shields or even William Joseph can become a fantastic player out of nowhere.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Does anyone know if the Friday game vs. the Niners is televised? If so, what channel & time?
August 5th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
2009 draft…..
1. WR
2. RT
3. DT
ANYWAY THIS TEAM WILL BE JUST FINE, WE WILL BE A DEEP PLAYOFF TEAM WITH A NUMBER 1 WR, AND A GOOD RT/LT TACKLE.
DONT GET ME WRONG THIS YEAR WILL BE VERY GOOD TOO….!
August 5th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Brein is right to an extent. Javon has been a malcontent, and a headcase way b4 he came to Oakland. He dogged it last year in Denver b4 getting surgery to basically sit out and teach Shanhan a lesson. He did not like being the 3 read in Denver and would not run through his routes ala Randy Moss in 06. In the spirit of Denny Green, Javon is who we thought he was. Nobody really missed him when he left Denver and GB, that is saying something, but he can still make plays on Sunday, and that is why he was brought to Oakland.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
I THINK LOFTON WILL BE THIS YEARS TOM CABLE!
August 5th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
ID in B, he’s known Chucky for years, he probably DOES sound a lot like him.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
hahaha. Nice one Dick V. Javon is WHO WE THOUGHT HE WAS!!! lol.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Dick, the #1 reason Javon is playing with us is Al remembers the night that Farves father died. Brett and Walker lit us up. In Al’s mind, The Greatness of Raiders would inspire Mr Walker to return to his former self and have games like that every night.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
The biggest part of a rebuilding season is seeing what you need to rebuild. Hopefully Kiffen stays in place and is able to draw a perfect blue print of his perfect team thanks to guys like Walker, Harris, Kelly, Sands, and even seabass. They are not great or even good but they do serve a purpose (only if Kiffen stays),
August 5th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Steely1, i sit behind the Raiders bench, and i plan to harass him either way it turns out. He needs to man up, and act like a man. Al should have slapped him and said .”you can act like a man” when he came crying in his office: the way Vito slapped Johnny Fontaine in the Godfather. Thats all his ass needs right now. The beat down in vegas doesn’t count for that.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Oakglenn we will be fine
August 5th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
We need to see improvement. Improvement in Jam first and foremost. Improvement in the offensive line play. Improvement in the defense. This team has to learn how to win. We’re NOT going to the Super Bowl this year so everyone relax. We’re going next year, book your flights.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Al shoulda taken the money and bought a few new hungry, want it kinda guys.
I hope yer readin this blog Javon….we expect more round here.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
B-job is correct: Harris is becoming a stud at LT.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Trevor Scott will make it over Greg Spires just you watch. He has to get stronger at thepoint if attack but he is quick offthe edge and raiders need that in the future
August 5th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
The downhlown man is in the house……how are those 49er huggies working out for ya?
August 5th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Greg Spires is a LDE really and wont make the cut………Trevor Scott is a pass rusher and will haev his shot at RDE…Richardson as the RDE is crazy
August 5th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Lowdown I would not be surprised if Harris developed into a very good player. He’s got size, quicks, athleticism, he’s smart, and Cable saw enough of him years ago when Cable coached at UCLA. I would not doubt Cable can work his magic on Harris and Lofton can do the same with some of the WR’s!!
August 5th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Due to the fact I haven’t had a personal computer til now, I have never read or responded to any of these blogs or training day updates. Can anyone of you veterans remember what we have sounded like during these last dark five years (during training camp and preseason)?
August 5th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Do we sound like we are any better?
August 5th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Harris will never be a stud at LT……….Let’s not kid ourselves
August 5th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
The best Harris can be is adequate but good? Never!! Reports differed onthe practice session………at times he looked all world and then he would whiff completely!!
August 5th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
the better pass rushers will eat Harris alive……Simply Red is Kwame Harris
August 5th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
We always seem to think the playoffs are in reach…in the preseason. But from my point of view…the pick ups of Jmac and Dmac have really sparked the Nations Interest.
Preseason is bliss…
I’ve said it before…keep in mind…for all intent and purpose….Jmac is still rook.
Temper those expectations boys….look for 8-8
August 5th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Surgeon….somethings you jump up and down for and others leave you confused. For the last five years we heard of people doing well in Napa but yet the games showed otherwise. We obviously are a better team just because more talent is around and a coach with balls is in existence contrary to this lame duck BS they yell. All owners get into the coach’s ass about the teams play…..I meabn if you are paying mmills to someone dont you have the right to say something? I thought so
August 5th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Steely its hard to look at 8-8….unless you are saying we will have a late season collpase………just look at the schedule
August 5th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Steely- after the bye we play NO,NYJ,Balt,Car,Atl and Miami………….you dont think 5-1 or 4-2 in that stretch it out of the question? The NFL is win now!!!! That let’s wait til next year weak shhhhit is not tolerated. I belive by the time we have the 3 straight division games in late november the Raiders will be no less than 6-4
August 5th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Because we are not going 0-4 or 1-3 in thos first four games……..Never will happen with trash teams like Den and KC……..Buffalo will be a tough game and SD will be at home. At worse its a 2-2 start
August 5th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
We still have to let Jmac pay his dues. Every QB does. Remember Aikman?
Our offesive line is not pass blocking effecient enuff to give our boy time. Least not yet…we’ll see, I to, belive in Tom Cable.
Harris?….well….I wanna see it.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Different times Steely…those were the days when paordy wasnt so rampant and pseudo dynasties were happening
August 5th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Steel I feel ya on the oline especially at the tackles but schemes will be devised plus the running game should be better than last year’s overrated ranking
August 5th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
All the Raiders need is for Harris to be slightly above average and that seems to be asking alot because he will have to be consistent but at least we play some weaker teams in 08. That outta help
August 5th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
LOL did anyone hear in sacramento radio how Trent Dilfer said the Raiders have one ofthe better coaching staffs in the league? That is nuts…..I think its that Fresno State thing withi him and Kiff going on
August 5th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Don’t know if it’s been discussed before….
but do you guys think any Raider officials actually read this blog. i.e. Players, or perhaps a copy thrown on the Al’s desk now and then. lol
Whatta ya think?
Don’t get me started on the whole vision of Al with his hard copies of the nightly blog….stewing over our inane visions of how the Nation ahould carry forward….and making plans to the kill the family members of those of us he disagrees with…
I digress….
Carry on Nation
August 5th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Kiffin=best job in all of sports……..if he fails then people will say WHO SUCCEEDS IN OAKLAND UNDER AL DAVIS……but if he wins………..sky is the limit!!! He can’t ask for a better situation as a 32 year old guy
August 5th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Steely- doubt it………actually I’d be disappointed if they read these blogs it wouldnt make sense
August 5th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
I was gone…
But I’m back now.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
The only thing that can hurt us against Buffalo is ourselves. If we get too over confident after winning 2 straight and don’t play hard enough because we are looking towards SD Buffalo can pull off a win against us. I think Kiffin will have this in mind and won’t let it happened though. Then we play SD at 3-0 and a chance to go into the bye with an undefeated record. Can you guys imagine that game? And we play at home on top of it all. Man, the energy will so intense…kind of like when Jamarcus took the field for the first time, remember? Oh man…..
By the way, for all of you in SoCal, the SF game will be on channel 5 KTLA @ 7pm. In case you didn’t know….
August 5th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Suggest people go check out Dmac’s blog. This guy is the man and will go down as the best pick in Raider history………..so long for that Glenn Dorsey shhhhhhhhit huh?
August 5th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
so post a link already Brien with an E
August 5th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
I hope are passing game is better than what it sounds like
August 5th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Buffalo will be improved and the fact Marshawn didnt get hit by the league was big forthat team. They got a young QB and not that bad of an oline plus lee evans is underrated……..That will be a good game
August 5th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Oakglenn,
I’m losing respect for your football acumen.
If this is Oakglenn, but you’re sounding like one of the looney tards around here.
Just the other day you were insisting the Walker retirement story was a fake.
Now you’re in here saying because we didn’t have any passing game last year, we can do without one this year. You can be a Raider fan without being an idiot you know.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
http://www.yardbarker.com/users/DarrenMcFadden…………hows that steely dan?

August 5th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Steelyone
The better perspective would be to improve day by day and as the offense begins to open up the season will be better than the experts or those who are thinking 7-9, 8-8, 6-10,etc..
I am not looking at the emergence of a team that had a record of 4-12, going to the Superbowl.
On the other hand it’s always easy to mentally say we are only good to be 8-8 this year, yet we expect the players to block out losing and perform to their capabilities.
As fans we should be realistic and want to see improvement in those losses.
Last year, we won 4 games, yet we were in the lead in 3 games we eventually lost. Our QB play was terrible, we had no #1 WR, we couldn’t stop the opposing teams running game, yet if we had some type of offense we may have won those games.
Our record could have been 7-9, yet you think we should be thinking and not getting our hopes up to be more than a 500 team at 8-8.
My expectations are if Jamarcus limits his mistakes, our running game improves by just 15% and our defense can land in the middle of a league defensive stats, that will translate to 6 wins.
That puts us at 10-6, our schedule is not easy, the NFL is not easy, but we have a better opportunity to be better due to the schedule for this season.
Who on the schedule can right now dominate us, there is NE, and the other two teams TB and No have above average teams with good defense and offense.
As far off as others think, regarding DT, LT, Wr, we aren’t as bad as other teams currently.
Would you want to be KC, Atlanta,Miami, Carolina, there on are schedule, advantage us.
Preseason will help our team, it’s the improvement we make week in and week out is the reason for my optimisim. That will determine our record, not a LT,DT or Wr.
As fans we should not accept any losing or break even record.
We need to think playoffs and see improvement in the players who will lead us for years to come.
Call me blind or whatever, I’m not going in any season hoping for just 8 wins.

Brien<——–never wavered on walker, believes he will come up big on sundays due to his hands, route running, speed and size
August 5th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Exactly Dell!!!!! Don’t forget Baltimore either……..we are playing teams like the jets, falcons, dolphins, who have either young QBs or no Qbs lol!! That should help
August 5th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Talk is cheap.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Brien
I’m going to drive to Oakland 10 times, I want to drive home with 10 wins, am I being to blind, I’d rather think win than loss.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Kell yeah sure………..but I wasnt one ofthose rah rah idiots in 2003,2004,2005,2006 and 2007 that thought we had a chance I knew better. This year everything fell in place perfectly
August 5th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

When you get up every morning, do you say I’m not going to sell any homes or have any listed.
Do you wake up and say it’s a new day and I’m going to do my best and have opportunities to sell homes because I have put the time and effort in to the best I can be.
I’m not full of sh@t, you make or break your life and career by having hope and goals to be the best.
I know talk is cheap, but action always begins before talking is completed.
I just can’t go in thinking were a loser, no way.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Fair enuff Del well poitioned take.
I only call em like I see em..
I predict 8-8
I HOPE we shock the world.
Rookie QB’s….less Rothlisberger and some guy I have surely forgotten ( but can count on Brien with an E to go find for me )
Just don’t make that connection in their rookie campaign.
Don’t expect to much Nation…we crawl,,,we walk…we run…WE DOMINATE.
All in due time.
Carry on Nation
August 5th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
8 wins is a real step forwad for a franchise that hasn’t won more than 4 games in the last five years.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Brien
Let’s ask the players if 8-8 is OK
They will say it’s not acceptable, they want to be 16-0 yet as fans we are thinking 8-8, it;s hard to understand that relationship.
Yet we will, including me bitch about their play and forget they the players wanted to win more than we did.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
You can start with “want to” and build on that.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
9/8/08 Den= No dline, no brandon marshall
9/14/08@KC= No Jared Allen no dline
9/21/08@Buf= Young team skill players and ok oline
9/28/08 SD= Rivers knee, Gates foot, Norv’s courage
Bye
10/12/08@NO= Talented team looking for rebound 2008
10/19/08 NYJ= Defense took hits and offense is boring
10/26/08@Bal= Young or No qb, not same team of 2000s
11/2/08 Car= Team has issues and this isn’t 2003
11/9/08 ATL= new regime new QB, defense has issues
11/16/08@Mia= New regime, who is the Qb? LOL
11/23/08@Den= Seen em already
11/30/08 KC= Seen em already
12/04/08@SD= BS game that should even been scheduled
12/14/08 NE= Tough team but old wounds have closed
12/21/08 Hou= B-day win for Brien, but improved team
12/28/08@TB= Zero offensive power and defense not same
So I’m figuring how canpeople think we have no shot at the post season. Very near sightedness by people
August 5th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
8 wins isnt a step forward with this schedule and how no one inthe division improved
August 5th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
After “want to” you can move on to Craft, Cohesion, Continuity.
August 5th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
If healthy I can see 10 wins coming……look at the schedule after the bye……….those are very winnable games………..the New Orleans game outta be tough but its a homecoming for Russell and the game is on a fast track for our team speed
August 5th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Ooooooooh Selvin Yongu and wife beater Michael Pittman outta put fear into our dline……They are so unstopabble with Jay cutler out there……..Oh my lawd we is in so much of trouble what is we gonna do?
August 5th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Shannarat doesnt impress me…….Kiffin outcoached him last season……..Shannarat is in his last season. The talent isnt there like it use to be
August 5th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
The fact that Warren Sapp is gone made our defense infinitely better and I’d say this to his face!!!

August 5th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Dj Williams(bay area native) isthe only player on defense worth a damn……that team will suck in 2008. Expect a new coach in 09 as cheater Pat Bowlen looks for a new guy
August 5th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey are not walking through that door…….No John Mobley, Ian Gold, Homonowski either……did I forget number one of all and all of his clutch kicks………..No elam? Yeah exactly that team has to to suck for a few years that is how football goes!!!
August 5th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
I guess Sedrick Ellis’ big brother of a bust Dewayne Robertson scares you huh?
August 5th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

If this is Oakglenn, but you’re sounding like one of the looney tards around here.
Just the other day you were insisting the Walker retirement story was a fake.
Now you’re in here saying because we didn’t have any passing game last year, we can do without one this year. You can be a Raider fan without being an idiot you know.
KK, I never commented on the Walker “retirement”, so clearly that was you know who. What I said today was Porter was our number one receiver last year. He was terrible. Walker, Carter, Curry, or Watkins would be an improvement over Porter. Maybe that clarifies the situation.
August 5th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Oakglenn………porter was a reciever?
August 5th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Brien<—–happily drunk off kool aid as I’ve mixed in some cheap gin
August 5th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Brien, I know hard to believe isn’t it. As I constantly say, since ‘04, JP had only two more TD receptions here in the coliseum than I did. He had one more than Tim Dwight. Why did our O suck so bad?? Well, there’s a good start. Yeah, and I know, it was the QB’s, the offensive play calls, the O line, the sun was in his eyes, Al Davis is to blame…yeah right.
August 5th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Al Davis is the man and the real fault Al had in the last five years was listening to other’s advice….thats the damn truth
August 5th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
2003…….Al wanted to break up team geritol from 2002 but was convinced by his players and coaches, staff and upper management……guess Al was right
August 5th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
2004….Al wanted Jimmy Johnosn but Jimmy suggested spineless Norvell and Al wanted Roy Williams or Larry Fitz but Norv said Gallery and that move has hurt the Raiders the next 4 season!!!
August 5th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
2005 He kept Norv but went for Moss which was a good move its just that Norv had zero balls again and had zero respect. 2006 I’m not blaming Al for trying to right the wrong he did…….But 2007 he wnt and got a good young coach and drafted a franchise QB……..2008 he officially took over and got real talent out here
August 5th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Al being too much a good guy is what has hurt him these last 5 years but the Al maverick is back to make al lthe media doubters and enemies kiss his old ass before he takes a dirt nap
August 5th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Al Davis is the man and those who talk on Al should find another team because when he dies that is what we are probably gonna turn into
August 5th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Very positive report on the Raiders:

Javon Walker better get the eye-of-the-tiger back soon…or we missed an opportunity when we didn’t accept his money back!
August 5th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
I agree with a lot of what Huff24 had to say about “practice player vs game player”…but you have to do a certain amount to earn that type of recognition.
August 5th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
and if we are going to carry 7 WRs…they had better be damn good at special teams and be at least 3rd on the depth chart at CB.
August 5th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
We talking bout practice……..not the game where it matter but dog we talking about practice
August 5th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
it is not true how you practice is how you play…….that worked in high school or lower but not in the pros. the games and money motivate these guys….the 70s and 80s are over folks

August 5th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

August 5th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Walker is my candidate…he is a ticking time-bomb…and I had him on my fantasy team when he was great and actually respect his talent…but it ain’t there no more!
August 5th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Brien 136 and 141 I agree 100% Thanks for point I have been trying to make forever in here!!

August 5th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Fargas is the starter because McFadden will play multiple positions. This will allow him to get more touches per game and create mismatches.
August 5th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Plus, Kiffin said he will keep the best blockers on the field when Russell is playing during the early preseason games.
McFadden will have to get better at picking up the blitz.
August 5th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
I predict we win the AFC West with whatever record is required (8-8 to 10-6)
Playoff loss in first game reveals our remaining weakness and it gets dealt with in free-agency or draft, most likely free-agency with draft picks being traded freely.

August 5th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Thanks. I contemplated getting a Russell (away) or McFadden (home) jersey, but ended up sticking with my favorite player on Defense. My next goal is to get it signed by T How himself.
My previous jerseys: Kaufman and Woodson

August 5th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
-McFadden will start as soon as Fargas gets hurt (by 4th game at the latest)
-The Raiders like doing things backwards with Burgess at LDE and Richardson at RDE. I heard something stupid that because Burgess is lefthanded, Al Davis wants him on the left side.

2008 - Raiders win Division
2008 off-season - pretenders and non-performers get cut
2009 - Raiders make run for Super Bowl.
After that we compete and/or dominate for years like the Eagles did with McNabb, except we win more Super Bowls.
August 5th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
burgess prefers going up against the slower foot tackle
August 6th, 2008 at 12:00 am
I think D Burg is hopping around to make double teams harder. Last year he stayed put and besides the injuries, that was part of the reason he didn’t do so good.

-Paul McQuistan
-Armand Shields

August 6th, 2008 at 12:05 am
Why would Kely be on that list? It really takes 2 years to come fully healthy from an ACL injury I wouldnt have him on that list but the rest can do…Hall will make a bunch of plays but get burned as well
August 6th, 2008 at 12:11 am
Raul aint it sad the top 4 tackles are on yourlist……cause for worry
August 6th, 2008 at 12:21 am
B,
For the money we paid Kelly, I expected him to be further along. Also, he’s currently about 15-20 pounds overweight, and has been sucking wind in practice. So far, I’m quite disappointed in him.
August 6th, 2008 at 12:24 am
What’s also very sad is that Terdell isn’t even slated to start. he’s behind Gerard Warren. I guess
Terdell was always best coming off the bench anyways. He’s way overpaid, along with Gallery.
August 6th, 2008 at 12:24 am
Brien,
I think you have the most unbiassed responses for a Raider fan and it is nice to read your comments. Don’t get me wrong, but I don’t agree with 20% of what you say. That is still more than I agree with the average fan and you always answer questions that I have even though they might not be relevant. thanks for puttin this young but die hard Raiderfan under your wing (whether you ment to or not).
We shouldn’t even be judging these playerz until the first preseason game (as harsh as we have been, anyways).
August 6th, 2008 at 12:26 am
Raul- what do you expect from him as of now…..they are telling him to take it slow. Also I dont think you read all reports he is actually looking ahead od schedule. They cant have him full force that knee isnt ready thats why Warren, Sands, and Joseph will be important because Kelly will be getting 50% of the snaps to start the season
August 6th, 2008 at 12:28 am
Surgeon thats cool of you. I gotta cal it like it is because the Raiders are my favorite thing to talk about and as far as things to do go to Raider games is number one…….Don’t worry you will be seeing more of me on a camera but that is for a total different time
August 6th, 2008 at 12:28 am
Surgeon…..I know I dont know everything but I feel I know more than most guys who think the Raiders are just a damn game……….Raiders are bigger than football
August 6th, 2008 at 12:31 am
Anyhow……..Harris and Green must be up for the challenge because ends like Peppers, Williams,Smith, Abraham, DUMBERville, Schobel, and OLBs like A.Thomas, Joey Porter, Merrimoid and Phillips will give us a reason for concern
August 6th, 2008 at 12:31 am
Word out of SD is MerriROID is bigger like he was in 2006…….he is juicing that outta result in a year suspension
August 6th, 2008 at 12:33 am
The cockiness of the franchise in SD is sickening…it would make sense if the team can say they have been number one ever but not since Lance alworth was in his prime have the Chargers been number one
August 6th, 2008 at 12:35 am
I will be going to my first home Raider game ever on 9/08/08. I have been to 6 games here in AZ. I am sure they are nothing like the Colossium. The Raiders still scare the bejesus out of me, but thanks to you long time Raider bloggers I have more confidence in my team. Brien your a good blogger rolemodel if there is such a thing. Dont let those little sh!t heads talk trash even if they are ignorant Raider fans.
August 6th, 2008 at 12:35 am
I really cant wait until sept 28th……..the Raiders should finally beat them in Oakland
August 6th, 2008 at 12:37 am
Surgeon what they dont know is I been on the net since the mid 90s under different names………I’m quite ready for any type of bull they throw and got an answer for everything from them. The local radio has heard my mouth and the bay area sportswriters have been told about themselves many times. You think the weak bloggers can affect me? Never
August 6th, 2008 at 12:39 am
And Surgeon if the Raiders dont win this year…..so what? Football is a game but Committing to Excellence, having Pride and Poise, and Just Winning applies to things beyond football. Raiders cant be beat!!!
August 6th, 2008 at 12:44 am
B,
I read ALL the reports. Kiffin said Kelly is not in shape yet and wanted to test him with the 10 play drive in practice. He only has a month to be ready.
At least he is only playing DT this year and not DE as well. Goodnight Nation.
August 6th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Kelly cant be pushed like that otherwise you may reck that knee forever
August 6th, 2008 at 12:49 am
I will be watching you and trying to learn. I think we have at least 3 major holes(Lt, wr, and dt). Without those I know it will be hard to win at least 8 games. On the other hand I do have a considerable vote of confidence for K. Harris, Warren, and deffinetly Watkins!(even Sands) It seems we just need to learn how to play like a team (hate to say it, but the Pats would know how to use our questionable guys like super stars).Did I say the Pats, I ment the Tucks (that should be the name of their “dynasty”).
August 6th, 2008 at 1:31 am
Surgeon there is plenty of young talent at wr for the Raiders. Oakland will be a top 5 running team for sure, and Zach Miller is a solid te that has a knack for getting open. The wr core could be better, but for what was avaliable in fa and our draft picks I feel they have done a great job finding young talent: Holland, Watkins, Schillens, Shields, Higgins, and Carter were all solid acquisitions. We overpaid for Javon, but he is a proven play maker. I know Dallas, Tampa, and Philly would welcome Javon right now even with his baggae: at a cheaper price of course but the floor can’t be too much lower if Porter got 10 mill in garunteees along with Stallworth; Berran got 16 mill in garuntees. None of them have even sniffed a 1,000 yards. My point is that Javon can still play despite himself.
August 6th, 2008 at 1:35 am
Kwame and Cornell Green are shaky tackles, but Cable has the most faith in them.. I am guessing with players like Goerge Foster, Spencer from the Texans, and Shane Olviea available at cheap prices, Cable feels some what comfertable with these guys. We have to just wait and see.

Thought this was kinda comical. From nfl.com about the Broncos playing against San Diego in week 2 and they are thinking that will be their first challenge, completely ignorant about the A$$ whipping they are going to get in week 1:
The Broncos’ bottom line is that, based on the last two years, they have a lot of catching up to do to catch San Diego, considered by many to have the league’s deepest roster, in the AFC West. In four games the last two seasons, the Chargers beat the Broncos by a combined score of 147 to 53. The Broncos did not score a touchdown in either game last year.
“I’ve never taken a whipping like I did last year, and that kind of pissed me off,” Young said.
“I think it pissed everybody off,” added Champ Bailey.
It won’t take long to find out if things have changed. Denver hosts San Diego in its second game.
“It’s one of those challenges early in the season, you can see where you stand,” said Young.

Chris Clemmons is 3rd string in Philly!
Our castoffs never amount to jack with other teams, except for Randy Moss, of course.

Davis will go down as the greatest owner in NFL history after 2 more Superbowl wins with this team he has so marvelously assembled and his health is improving, with robotics advances he could hang around for another 4 decades. He should have never let those coaches and personel executives take control over the last 6 years. Davis should have known that after his last real puppets, Gruden and Allen, left for more power. Davis is the only one that can correct an ageing roster. Too bad he tried to do it their way over for the last 6 years. Kiffin is the last to get his shot to do it his way, last year. Thankfully it was for the last time, since 4-12 records tend to do that. Now Kiffin will either listen to Davis or get out of the way because the Raiders are back on track, thanks to Al Davis.

Man this training camp amd practice stuff is really getting to me. With the talk of jruss throwing checkdown passes to running backs……that’s all he has been doing most of training camp? I know kiffin says he wants to play it safe and the whole developing jruss. But man can we let him really let him get timing with the WR corps? What kind of decision making is russell making in camp that he has to throw to RBs in the back field? I guess im just ready for preseason I wanna see him connect with the WR and not just look for the RBSwinging out the back side im just…………loosing it already!!!!! Lets get it on!!!!!!

I think Kiffen was taking a shot at Bush with the whole “don’t run like a 200 lb RB”. Bush was known as soft in college and I really think he is going to disappoint a lot of people in the Nation who think he is going to produce a lot for us. No worries though, because McFadden will be awesome

Russell is throwing check downs so he does not get sacked alot while the o-line gels as a passing blocking unit. The deep stuff will come very soon.

I’ll never consider Moss as a Raider. He was a waste of space and a disgrace to the colors. By not showing up to the Pro Bowl after that hilarious defeat he showed who he is.

Trevor Scott the next Lance Johnstone?

VR I beg to differ with ya on that man…..he was also at ont time considered a sure fire heisman trophy canadate b4 the leg injury he wasn’t soft he was just nible for his size that’s why he drew comparisons to the “bus”
August 6th, 2008 at 7:28 am
DBW: Heisman trophy winners don’t make the best pro prospects. I hope I am completely wrong on this one, but the guy was known for running out of bound in Louisville, and has had 19 carries against Kentucky since X-mas of 2005!! Not his fault, but can’t expect much from him this year. We will get our first look on Friday

Michael Bush….Just not buying the hype on him yet. Hope I am wrong, would rather be wrong and him good than vice versa. Work with a guy that went to school at Lousiville while Bush was there, and we watched him play, and he was the softest 250 lb RB I have ever seen. Great hands though, best asset would be a receiving back
August 6th, 2008 at 8:18 am
LMN: A lot of people on this blog seem to think Bush is going to be a 1000 yard back type this year, and there is no way we can expect a guy to be NFL ready when he hasn’t played in two years, and durability was a question mark BEFORE his leg injury. JMO

Bush = Bettis

Dakota - #142 Thanks for the link!

LosT: putting Bush in the same league as a Hall of Famer already? Really? Can we at least let him get a few handoffs before we compare him to Bettis. Not trying to be a hater, but let’s be real here.

Vegas Raider-
Just meant his style. He’s a big back with quick feet that can make linebackers miss. He is not extremely fast, nor is he a big time power back. More of a halfback in a fullbacks body. Has great hands which he showed in college with swing passes.
