Training camp, Day 14 (P.M. practice)
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 at 9:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from Wednesday night’s practice:
– Virtually everyone who missed the morning session returned for the evening, meaning the Raiders should be near full strength to face the 49ers Friday night.
Those who returned after missing the morning session were defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, wide receiver Drew Carter, wide receiver Javon Walker, wide receiver Ronald Curry, guard Cooper Carlisle, center Jake Grove, guard-tackle Fred Wakefield, linebacker Ricky Brown and quarterback Andrew Walter.
Those who did not practice and aren’t likely to face the 49ers are linebacker Grant Irons, safety Greg Wesley and cornerback John Bowie. The Raiders have yet to make a move with the roster spot of lineman Mark Wilson, who suffered a broken leg early in camp.
– During the evening practice, the Raiders put together “service” teams to simulate the offense and defense of the 49ers.
With Raiders reserves running a defenses they were unfamiliar with, the Raiders offensive units had their cleanest passing practice in days.
During one seven-on-seven session, starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell, Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo all went through their six-pass sessions without an incomplete pass.
Walker, who missed the morning session, looked crisp during evening drills and caught one slant from Russell during a team session that he ran all the way into the end zone, bluffing a goal-post dunk at the end.
Carter also looked fresh after missing his previous two workouts. Walker and Carter were running with the first team offense, Curry and Johnnie Lee Higgins with the second team.
The only drops during the practice were one by Todd Watkins on a deep pass from Russell, and another by Drisan James.
– A special teams session included the terrifying sight of Mario Henderson being asked to fair catch a pooch kickoff at the 30-yard line. Henderson made the catch rather awkardly, even leaving the ground to get the ball.
“Why did you jump in the air?,” screeched defensive end Jay Richardson.
Moments later, Richardson was asked to do the same thing, but forgot to call for the fair catch.
– Look for Johnnie Lee Higgins (punts) and Tyvon Branch (kickoffs) to get a long look as return specialists.
– The 80-man roster limit with no World League exemptions means space is at a premium and carrying more than four quarterbacks is a luxury.
Wide receivers coach James Lofton throws his own passes during drills with the touch and accuracy of a quarterback. Lofton threw fades, comebacks and fly patterns, and at one point completed at a good 15 passes in a row before misfiring _ and that one was to assistant coach John Fassel, who jumped into a drill and couldn’t hang on to a pass.
– Missed a presentation from NFL officials during the afternoon to participate in an on-line chat, but was told the film put together to demonstrate some rules issues had Raiders representation.
An item on taunting included film of Stuart Schweigert standing and glowering over Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez (yes, it actually happened) after a big hit.
When discussing personal conduct, there was the image of Warren Sapp, melting down and getting ejected in Jacksonville.
Jay Richardson was shown giving a throat slash during the portion on “menacing gestures.”
– Thursday’s practice will be a 20-minute walkthrough with players wearing tennis shoes and leaving their helmets in their lockers. Most reporters will not be attending _ including this one.

I can’t believe some of the rules they are dreaming up. Football is almost as bad as basket ball with all the fouls. Let them play!
August 6th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Things are looking a little better in Raiderland. Should be good to see the boys fresh on friday. Disturbing to keep hearing about Gallery’s false starts.

jerry gets your lazy butt at that practice …what the hell do you think are we paying you for ??
August 6th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Although it’s early, we’ll know a lot more after three pre-season games, and we’ll get a preview of “where we’re really at” after the 4th pre-season game. So, as of now, we’re starting to jell. Can’t wait for Fridays game. I just hope we can win without any injuries, even to second and third level players.
Just win and no injuries. (ps) break one for us DM.
August 6th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Paying reporters? No wonder we’re messed up. We’re supposed to pay the officials. Everybody knows that.
August 6th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
the offense needed a confidence boost in the passing game. I know that win the games are actually played, the Raiders will have a more physical and nasty unit that will cut block the hell out of the defense. The Raiders offense is really one that plays with one hand tied behinds its back. We really will see a full picutre friday night with JR, the o line, and dmac getting an extended look. Don’t get too excited if they run wild on Friday because the niners defense does neet the same reps. Their offense will be doingthe same. Jt o sullivan got the nod for friday night. I think they did that baecause they look so bad that at least O sullivan knows the offense, and he might not embaress them. If alex looks bad, the Niner faithful will just go nuts, and Hill has been turning over the ball the most. I am guessing the Raiders will route the niners in this game, as long as JR does not turn over the ball. Like i said remember not to get to ahead of ourselves because the niners are bad, and they will be pulling their strength off the field early.
August 6th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
pre-season games are like paying to watch them practice. Please Raiders, reduce the price of these games!
No injuries should always be the main goal of preseason. Teams that win in the regular season often look bad in preseason.
That, and to get your tailgating gear together for another season of hooping it up Raider style.

I hope they finally get this guy!
August 6th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
For those of you who haven’t hear, BRETT FARVE has been traded to the JETS. I’m sure he’s not a happy camper.

Dude Nobody cares if you wont be attending practice. Get over yourself Jerry
August 6th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

We have nevet beaten farve! I want that to happen this year!
August 6th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
The release of former Oakland starting free safety Stuart Schweigert on Monday night was somewhat of a surprise to the media, but the Redskins said that he never adjusted to their aggressive style of defense.
Simply put, Schweigert wasn’t physical enough for the Redskins and rookie safeties Chris Horton — and to a lesser extent Kareem Moore — are making good impressions. Schweigert didn’t ask for his release as some had speculated, but he got it anyway.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Favre will be in Oakland Week 7 Oct. 19. I predict 5 ints
August 6th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
He does like to throw picks…
August 6th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
K-Rock
You’re so right about that. I still remember Farve playing after his father died and stomping us to the ground on national TV. We need to stuff it back.
Farve has to be out of shape and he’s going to lose more than a few steps, playing in a new system and with new players. Also, he’s basically has missed training camp with the jets. He’ll have a lot to learn about the inter-workings of the offense, and he’ll have to do it when time permits. During pre-season, the main focus during the week…is perperation for the next pre-season game.
We’ll find out tomorrow what Green Bay gets for him, but I think, whatever it is, it will be too much for a 38 year old QB, even if he is Brett Farve.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Two things I just chuckled about,
1. Farve to the Jets . I bet Chucky and Bruce are pissed off.
2. Stu released from the Foreskins. LMFAO, dude flat out sucks ballzz.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Thank god the National nightmare is over…Favre has a home.
Can we all move on now…ESPN for example.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Einstein
Many of us had the same chuckle. It’s always good to see Chucky pissed, although I root for him every time he plays one of our division teams. Stu’s release, and the reason for it, only confirms what so many of us have said for years. He’s too soft and he can’t make an interception in the nfl. He made one or two, but most of the time (95%) he wasn’t even close.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
New post. 1st!
August 6th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
God dammit! Why didn’t any of you tell me there was a new post? F’n useless. All of you.
Jets to the Super Bowl. Guaranteed.

Hey guys the Broncos starting RB is out for 6-8 weeks with a elbow inj. it’s on NFL network.
When it rains it pours!!!!!!
Shanahan and his battery thowing fans in Denver are getting what they deserve…….

NFL Network says Packers get a conditional 4th round pick for Favre.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Fourth round pick…wow, that’s a give away.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
I think he ok’d the deal or it wouldn’t have happened. Favre is only worth a conditional 4th round pick & only 2 teams were even in the hunt and TB didnt even offer a 3rd and 1 of their 10 QB’s on the roster.
NY comes to Oakland!

August 6th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

August 6th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
if farve takes 50 percent of the snaps they get a 3rd
if he takes 75 and make the play offs they get a 2nd
if he takes 90 percent and go to the superbowl they get a first
August 6th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
From what I remember, after the Schweigert hit, he said after the game he was only checking up on Tony and said his eyes had rolled in the back of his head..and with a helmet on and given that Stewy’s a really nice guy (one of his main problems), it’s really hard to tell if he was showing him up or really checking up on him–a la Lawrence Taylor and Joe Thiessman.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

From what you’re saying the Vikings and the Bears weren’t
interested in him. That’s new to me.

there is no way we lose against the broncos this season. there team is falling apart
August 6th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Only the Jets & Bucs had an offer according to media reports. I think Minn knew GB wouldn’t trade inside the division but you are right they were interested.

August 6th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
I’ll pass on the Farve conversation - but he’s going to blow wood(chips) with the J-E-T-S SUCK SUCK SUCK this year - but seriously K-Rock - for a conditional 4th? That’s all? Wow. Jets got a good deal even though they’re still going to suck. Farve 25+ INT’s this year. Darn…said I wasn’t going to talk about him, but in my book sh*t talking doesn’t count…on to the Raiders…
Jerry’s notes back up what I’ve been saying - these WR’s can get open running West Coast routes against other D’s - the quality of our secondary and its familiarity against our O just makes it difficult. Walker to the end zone on a slant? Perfect! That’s what we need, a little RAC (run after catch) yardage in this system. That, in addition to our run game bringing the d closer and play action of the run game will really open this offense up. The KEY IS KWAME! If he can be a solid pass blocker in this scheme, we’re set! All we have to do is help out the RT position on occassion through an equal combination of design (roll outs and moving pockets) and bocking help (TE, FB, RB chips) and it won’t constrict our play calling much at all - totally pumped for this season, the Nation is back and the Mediots are going to choke on my silver and black johnson! (yeah, I’m a few drinks down, the Jedi doesn’t normally talk smack).
RAAAAIIIIIIIDEEEEERRRRRSS! Get your tix - let’s make this the only pre-season sell out in the NFL - DMAC live baby!
August 6th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Aside from Brandon Marshall’s injuries, he has other problems to deal with. He’s been arrested three times in a year long span beginning in March 2007. He’s due in court next month for a drunken driving trial and has two domestic disputes on his record. Jay Cutler says Marshall won’t have any more situations like this for the rest of his life, that he’s learned his lessons. How would Cutler know what Marshall will or will not do in the future. If you’re a wife beater and a drinker as well, you have problems, problems hard to break. Cutler is either an idiot or a fool for opening his mouth in defense of Marshall, or he’s both.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Favre to Jets for a conditional 4th round pick
August 6th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Funny thing about the trade was if the Jets trade Favre to the Vikings the Packers will get 3 1st round picks.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
I think Chad Pennington will be released and might make a decent backup for Russell because he is good at the offense we are running the short passes and the dump offs etc.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
SilverNblack666
That would be more than funny, but I’m sure there’s a restriction in the trading clause preventing that.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Marcus Allen did not make the NFL Network list of Top 10 players to change teams.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Now that Javon Walker is looking like a legitimate top talent and as he continues to get better and more consistent. I hope all the coaches and GM’s in here don’t change their tunes.
Yeah get rid of the bum now. Crazy Al should never have given the money to him, all the signs were there and he sould have known.
You guy’s always overreact to every little piece of info as if things have no way of changing. I think B4 camp is over that Javon will establish himself as a top talent and show hwy he was deserving of the money “Crazy Al” gave him as well as the reassurance that he believed in him.
Lefty12 is the one besides myself that I remember reading that had enough foresight to give the kid a chance to show what he has. Their may have been others as I didn’t read all posts but.
But this should serve as another of many lessons to show some patience when it comes to these athletes after all they’re human too. None of us has coached at this level nor played at this level but far to many assume they know more than a man though aged, is in the HOF for doing both.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Excuse the mistake Big Al has never played, obviously I meant coach and GM.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
That was interesting how Marcus didn’t make the list and neither did Ken Stabler going to Huston.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
BHP,
I probably would have waited for at least 1 good pre season performance from Javon before posting that but your enthusiasm/optimism is never in question.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Nice Post BHP relating to that subject I have said before that we cannot trust the local sports writers putting negative slants on articles written about training camp.
Oops Chad Pennington is due to make 6M this year I retract my earlier idea of him being a backup for Russell.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Chad Penningtons arm or lack thereof combined with his lack of mobility in the pocket make him a an even worse fir for this offense than AW.
FYI
August 6th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
I’m really surprised that Favre is going to the Jets. They are not a very good team and I’m not sure that Favre can be their savior at this point in his career and this late into the training camp season. I’m sure Chad Pennington will find a job quickly and probably in the NFC North but I’d love to have that guy backing up JR if it was even possible.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Jedi, make up your mind remember this is a man defense. I thought the scheme was outdated and stupid and no one in their right mind would coach such a scheme in todays modern NFL.
All the caches in here put together coulan’t field a pop warner team. But they know more than a man who’s worked for and been around the best DC’s in the NFL and yet he’s dumb in heir eyes. But somehow gets the respect of those he worked for. Go figure!!

I, among many others have stated that he needs to given time, at least through pre-season before making any final judgements. However, making a catch or two in a practice session surly doesn’t warrant such a positive assessment on your part. That Vegas incident, his request to retire and all his missed practices, plus according to Kiffen that he has many issues to resolve…surely justify a “wait and see attitude” before claiming that he’s getting better and he’s more consistent. I’ll agree to disagree with you and wait until pre-season is over.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
So is the game telavised in sac area?
August 6th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
True.
Rod Woodson said on NFLN the Raiders play man 99% of the time and you cant do that in todays NFL.
BHP, you know more than Rod Woodson, eh ?

I knew one of you would take the bait!
August 6th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Ghost - Yes…the Raider game is televised in the Sacramento area. Unfortunately for the Bay Area, we’re the ones who have to suffer as we cannot watch the game until 10pm which is stupid. Makes no sense at all.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
The NY giants play a predominant Man defense. So do the the GB Packers. They seem to do pretty well. So do the Jacksonville Jaquars. Those teams did pretty well in the playoffs as far as I know.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Mariucci cant shut his piehole about Favre he is worse than Madden. AL should hire Mariucci to drive his golf cart.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
You obviously can do it, it just doesn’t always work… given our run defense last year we will have to run man d. Our worst pas defense of the year was the first game against the lions… hope that was martz and we can still take vengence on the “playoff bound” donks.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
I love madden. and He should coach again… would be fitting for als last superbowl.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Priest…
While I never called Al any names, I am one that was and is still uncomfortable with the Walker signing. As far as I’m concerned I am not reacting to ONE negative media statement, but the totality of info that has came out about this guy.
Kiffin stated that he was worried about Walker. Are you saying he is not a good coach because he is not impressed by Walker?
The only person jumping on a single media report is you. He had one good practice.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Now I can’t help myself - no way farve does anything for the loser Jets in 1 to 3 years (the max he can possibly play effectively) except sell some extra tix - maybe that’s what is was about - they have a new stadium and they need to sell some PSL’s? Anyway, that team stinks and they don’t run a west coast offense, which is all farve knows - he doesn’t know the AFC, is stuck in a division with the Pats in their prime, and all I can think is…he must REALLY want to play. Or perhaps a three team deal that shuffles Farve to the Vikings via another team. Or a wink-wink-nod deal. I dunno, but the Jets are stupid for ruining the development of Kellon Clemons and dumping Pennington for nothing - Pennington alone is worth a 4th rounder (we paid a 4th for McClown! P.S. Mike Williams doesn’t count).
You just can’t possibly know at this point if Clemmons is a bust, and Pennington is a decent starter, which is all Farve is going to be while the Jets continue to rebuild and get some playmakers behind that o line.
We’ll see, but in my mind, you only pick up Farve if you think you can have a magical year and he’s your only missing piece and you run a West Coast system at this stage of the offseason. If it was last year and we didn’t lose Moss, I’d be all for it for the Raiders, but I wouldn’t want to bring him in under any other circumstance. Good luck with the media circus Jets, and Farve - if you weren’t sure about retiring this year, one year in that hell hole New York media market where you are not considered the second coming of Jesus like you were in green bay, you’ll have no doubts after this season. Farve’s Legacy = RIP.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
It’s man heavy defense, They run a mix of zone and man. We ran zone against Detroit. We run as much man as Green Bay and NYG’s who won the SB. The Donkey’srun a lot of man as well.
If you watched film you’d know that and no one would have to tell ya’.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Priest is wound tighter than a drum & is determined to prove to himself the Raiders can do no wrong and are right 100% of the time..
What a way to live.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Mista, I had no idea you cared.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
BHP,
I agree with Rod Woodson we play man 99% & it doesnt work in todays NFL.
The other 1% its a zone, a clueless zone at that. Keep propping up Rob Ryan and his defense but Kiffins fingerprints are on this D from the camp notes we will see Week 1 of the reg season ( not in pre-season ).
August 6th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
He’s a guy who told us he wants to play the game, its not about money he just wants to play under semi ‘normal’ circumstances. and if plays for the jets in NY we’ll know he wasn’t bluffing.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Steve Mariucci now claims the Jets are a 10 or 11 win team with Favre at the helm.
I guess he is competing with Madden for the right to carry Favre’s dirty jock around.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
BHP, you are reaching to say the least. Javon was risky move to begin with, the beat down (bad decision making) and the cry for help ( retirement) illustrate that the dude is just unstable. We over paid him, and I have consistently said that he was paid market value compared to the comps in fa: Berrian, Porter, Stallworth, and adjusted for higher costs of living and more taxes in Cali. At the time, i understood the move because Al did want to give his major investment the weapons, tools, coaching, and enviroment to succeed. Fast forward to last thursday, and this whack job that came in out of shape from the outset b4 the vegas trip offers to give back his bonus and let the Raiders off the hook of a very questionable investment, Al should have took the money and released the kid. We got Javon because we needed to upgrade the wr core, but the signing of Carter, emergence of Holland and Watkins, Curry hitting the weight room, and the drafting of another two solid prospects in Arman Shields all add up to upgrades over the 07 wr core, and collectively make a head case like Javon expendable. Like I said yesterday in the Spirit of Denny Green ” Javon is who we thought he was” a head case, but the solid crop of talented prospects make it easier to move on especially with the costs in mind. You can say i told you so b4 actually seeing him play in a real game, but I agree with the mind set of taking the deal when it was on the table. That is just good business sense either way you look at it. For AL he is not concerned about the costs as much as he is about winning, in a sense we are a lucky fan base , but he is taking a big gamble. We all know that Javon can play if healthy and focused, but would you bet your house on him, or a line of credit so to speak.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
The Favre situation is funny because I really feel that Favre has something left in the tank. I think the Packers would have been great had he returned under normal circumstances but I feel completely different about Favre joining the Jets. I feel like his age is going to show up as if hes washed up and I feel like he won’t play very well. I don’t know what to make of it.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Mariucci is a buffoon ask BHP.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
K-Rock I’m worried about him too. I just don’t overreact to everything. The guy has not even played a single down and fans were crusifying the guy. Why not wait and see for yourself. But I guess that’s not fast enough we need everything right now or else.
as Mista said, “what a way to live”
August 6th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
BHP, I’m gonna give you a little advice here. Even tho Rob Ryan’s dad designed a defense that has been in use for 20+ years in both college and pros, and Rob grew up in and around NFL defenses, AND, he coached 2 world championship LB staffs which happened to be the strength of Bill Bellichiks defenses, AND since Bellichik might know something about NFL defenses, somehow, mistaclown knows better. And you can’t win. If the Raiders defense falters, it’s Rob Ryans fault. If the defense excels, Kiffin did it. Don’t argue with an idiot. It looks bad.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

I hear ya. I am waiting. I have NO CHOICE but to wait and see. I will be the first to cheer for this guy if he gets his head out of his butt and brings it.
But having fun in practice “While working against a scout defense” (According to Jason Jones blog) after skipping the AM practice does not scream intensity to me.
I hope you are right and I am wrong though. That is for sure!

Jedi, I would completely disagree with that. First off, Favre has been in the NFL 18 years. He knows more about what defenses are going to be thrown at him than both his head coach Mangini and Shottenheimber the OC who have a COMBINED 13 years of NFL experience between them. The Jets were a 10 win team 2 years ago. The Patriots are not in their prime. They are starting to leak oil badly. The Jets tried kellen Clemons for half the year. They ended up with 4 wins. Kellen Clemons is clearly not the answer. The Jets feel they are a solid QB away from a return to the playoffs. Can’t really argue with that. JMHO.

Hey BHP - Sorry dude - to get my point totally across you had to read my last post on the last thread and bear in mind what I said during the offseason to get the whole picture. From your post you obviously know I’m totally against the man scheme and have been begging for a 3-4 zone blitz scheme or Tampa 2 for a while and we talked about that back and forth during the offseason I think.
I said the reason the man scheme wouldn’t work is because like Jerry Porter said about Art Shell/Tom Walsh’s 1970’s offense you would need “probowlers across the board to make it work in today’s NFL”. Probably the only astute comment JP ever made in a Raider uniform, and after the stories about Tim Brown and Jeff Hostetler calling thier own plays (literally writing in the dirt on the field during games!) during the 90’s under Shell, the only thing I agree with JP on. Anyway, same is true regarding the man defense - the days of the pro-style offense (two WR’s split out to either side) being run 90% of the time are long gone and if you’re gonna run a man scheme, then teams are just going to field 3, 4, or 5 recievers, flood one side of the field and attack your weaker CB’s.
I said there’s no way Al can field a long lasting and competitive team given the salary cap issue and run a man scheme on D AND have a decent offense. After the acquisition of Gibril Wilson and D. Hall, and the fact that Al refused to fire Rob Ryan, I said like it or not, Al is trying to prove me wrong (yeah, I know he doesn’t care about my opinion, I’m just saying) and run his man scheme and aquire the pro bowlers across the board to do it.
Like MistaBrown noted with Rod Woodson’s statement, and so many other former Raiders have said, the man scheme is outdated. I can name 10 different ways to beat it, and yes all I played was high school ball. But, I’m a die hard Raider fan, and I’m going to support it, which is why I’ve been saying, given the personnel we have, a bunch of 3 technique DT’s (e.g. Warren and Kelly) with good pash rush skills, Burgess on the outside and the new acquisition of Edwards, this D can win by playing a feast or famine game plan and trying to create penetration up and down the line to blow up a play or two and force longer passing situations.
Anyway, I didn’t get the last point you were making:

All the caches in here put together coulan’t field a pop warner team. But they know more than a man who’s worked for and been around the best DC’s in the NFL and yet he’s dumb in heir eyes. But somehow gets the respect of those he worked for. Go figure!!
I get that you’re trying to say that we bloggers don’t know enough football to coach a pop warner team, but I don’t get who the “man” is (Al Davis?) and the rest of the “him’s” and “he’s” - no disrespect, I just need clarification on who you’re talking about and we can discuss from their bro -

August 6th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Dick V, My problem with the know it alls in here concerning Rob Ryan. They are so caught up in what they term to be the modern NFL.
This crap is just warmed over soup. Our zone is suspect do to that lack of execution. Has nothing to do ith the scheme, but everything is Ryan’s fault even if a guy falls down he should’ve known that the guy would fall down.
Now we have better talent especially at safety. At corner we boast possibly the best the NFL has to offer. On offense we have the ability to score. That changes everything.
We will see if you can’t run this defense, now t hat we have Stu out of it, along with a front seven that may be ready to get it done.
Talent changes everything and I’ve been saying that in here for a year and we’ll see if I’m right. Most think that some scheme changes are needed. I disagree.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Now Dick V I have to agree with basically everything you say regarding “Jivin” Walker. Remember tho, Walker was never considered to be a “long term” solution to the #1 WR issue. He’s a stop gap measure. If we can get one or two decent years out of him, it will be worth it.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
This may be a good move for the Jets. They did make the playoffs, with a very meager roster in 06. There is a lot of pressure to win with NE and NYG shining real bright right now. That would be like the Niners winning the SuperBowl versus the Chargers, and us having the same 4-12 record in 04. Al would have been even more desperate than he was, and signed both Brett and J taylor. I think dumping a Chad Pennington tthat knows the offense for a Farve is almost even money. They should have just kept their picks and rolled with what they had in place in my opinion.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Real Oakglenn - glad to have you back, knock on wood he we do not speak of comes back tonight! Anyway, I thought about the playoff run against the weak schedule the Jets had when Mangini took over, but they were awful last year and it’s going to take more than a QB and Vernon Gholston to fix it - therefore for one year, maybe two, possibly three, I don’t think the trades worth it - the vikings or the Bears would have been the best, maybe Carolina or Tampa, but I’ll agree that Farve, just as an upgrade, is way better than Chad or Clemmons. I can see how *they* think they’re a player away (like I thougt when we got moss), but they’re not - NE is not slipping 16 and 0? they’re improving despite the SB loss - their window will close just as ours opens though. But I digress again and I’ll leave it there -
August 6th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
does NOT come back tonight! Sorry!
August 6th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
BHP I completely agree with your #102 post. The pass defense played very well, under any microscope. The pass rush could have been better, but with the moves we made, hopefully that will improve. The run defense was piss poor. By moving Kelly to the 3, Wilson to the box, and having 3rd year player Thomas Howard hold his position and shed blocks, the run defense should greatly improve.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
We will soon see. The proof will be on the field not in here.

BHP - My shortest post of the year: Rob ryan came to town to install a 3-4 and put sapp at DE and Brayton and Irons at OLB. Nuff said - don’t care if his daddy was great and his twin brother is the bomb in Baltimore: Rob Ryan = Danny Devito in Twins.

August 6th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
Jedi it’s hard to say a 16-0 team is slipping, but they have 6 starters with 10 or more years in the league, and Tom Brady has 9. We have none. Once you hit the ten year mark in the league, well…….
August 7th, 2008 at 12:00 am
TRO, that’s all I’m saying. IMO we will be better for those reasons and we will have an offense that will support the defense and vice versa. Instead of expose it to constant pressure not to make a mistake.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:06 am
I’ve never said DMC is an average back, are you crazy. I said we didn’t need him for what we awould have to pay him. I still feel that way. I’ll take Chris Long over DMC right now. And give me Felix Jones or Jamal Charles to replace him.
I’ll do it in a NY second.

BHP, i have to side with you on the d. the d frustrated eberyone last year with their lack luster performance. Namdi is shutting down one read out the gate. You have a playmaking corner on thhe other side daring qb’s to beat him: they will, but he will also take several back to the house. D hall is a faster, stronger, and smarter version of Phillip Buchanon. Huff slides over to free, Wilsson is the aggresive enforcer they have waiting for. The LB have on more year of experience, and they are already special. The d line is better. Kelly will be more stout against the run, warren and sands are in better place than they were a year ago, Burgess is in great shape and pissed that he set the unit back last year, and ultimately his raise by gettinghurt. Jay Rich is improved in all aspects of the game. The Raiders are a team that you don’t want to throw against. Kitna killed that cover 3 last year, but also threw a few picks. The defense will work fine if the offense can produce. If not oppossing teams will just continue to pound and wear out the defense. exploit the weaknesses and minimize the strength. Every qb that went after this d threw int’s. THAT IS NOT AN ACCIDENT.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:11 am
Oh, BTW Jedi several HC’s in the NFL disagree but obviously you know better. Truth is you wouldn’t know an NFL coach or assistant if his picture and description were in the dictionary. Why don’t you submit your resume to Al Davis and get on the board and draw up a defense to impress him. See if you can keep him from laughing.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:13 am
I would have rather had Chris Long as well. Both players are special, and worth it. The d would have been really scary with Long, and the o could have been solid in the rushing attack with Fargas, Rhodes and Bush. Oh well Dmac is hear and according to Jerry better than advertised.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:13 am
BHP - I totally agree with the 10 year mark spells the decline usually but that’s what a real system does for you, it hides the bad parts (eventually the parts will fall off of course, but it will last for longer than Farve is around for sure imho - he’s at 18 years! I agree with you that Farve has more experience, can’t argue with your numbers (i.e. the facts!), but Farve is a player and the coaches are coaches - different story as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, I don’t think the Jets beat the Pats this year, and maybe they split with the Bills and sweep the Fins (with or without Farve), but I can’t see them getting to the playoffs or winning a game if they do make it. If all they want is 8 or 9 wins, then fine, but where are they at next year when Farve hangs it up? Maybe he comes back and then his decline starts? In my mind Farve is a perfect piece to a team that only needs one player for a year, and then I’m sure he could be convinced to come back for year 2 - 2 years for a team on a superbowl run is a good deal; it’s not just the draft pick (which is nothing in this case), it’s the wasted time and lower draft picks you’ll be dealing with because Farve is nobody’s future at this point of his career.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:22 am
BHP - No problem - this game isn’t rocket science and everyone (except us) is running basically the same thing, save the difference between a 3-4 and 4-3 base D. There’s a finite amount of defense schemes you can run in this league, so drawing them up isn’t the issue, which is exactly what I’m bitching about - on the drawing board our D is vanilla:
FS
SS
CB CB
WLB MLB SLB
DE DT NT DE
Fortunately I don’t have to draw because the blog doesn’t allow it - here’s the scheme - the back 7 each have a man except for the FS who covers the deep 3/3 of the field - CB1 WR1, CB2 WR2, SS TE, WLB RB/Flat, MLB middle short zone, SLB RB/flat. If that scheme is what impresses Al Davis, then I’m totally hired.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Damn - my formatting didn’t work - oh well, the two factions (those that love our D and those that hate it) get what I’m saying and go from there.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:34 am
BHP - by the way, since you and I are “regulars” on this blog, I want you to know (so you can call me out later) that I think Chris long is a BUST! I play GM on this blog - Rob Ryan and even Tom Walsh will blow me out of the water on actual plays vs. an offense/defesne - give me three years as a water boy/quality control assistant and I’ll put my money on me though
Well, maybe not tom walsh - I used to call plays for my high school team b/c my coach ran a vanilla scheme - during my senior year I got to call them myself though 50% of the time
But BHP, thanks for keeping it real and having a good conversation - you’re a smart Raider fan and I love the dialouge and you’re just as right as I am - thanks for not trolling and keeping it interesting and all that - you’re one of my favorites on this site!
August 7th, 2008 at 12:38 am
A good DC can make adjustments on the fly. Last year we ran a 3/4 and 4/3 we did many things based on what the offense was trying to do. We just weren’t very good at a lot of it because of talent. We were very undisciplined and didn’t execute. you keep harping on these strategies and that’s not our problem it’s EXECUTION. We ran a complex defense in the front 7 yes we worked out of a man secondary but that’s just our base. Many times we showed zone but basically we played straight.
To hell with what strategy if the talent can’t execute it. Savvy!
August 7th, 2008 at 12:47 am
LOL! Saavy BHP! I don’t see where we ever ran a 3-4 last year though but I was at the Cleveland game when Rob Ryan pulled out the old 0-11 though!!! Did you see that BS or what? I agree we were deficient on talent, no question - like I said going into last year the biggest disapointment of Art Shell was that because the scheme was so bad we had no idea what kind of talent we had on offense so 2006 was a totally wasted year - the new staff needed another year just to evaluate the roster in a real scheme.
We agree that the back four was a basic man scheme but the front 7 was totally vanilla too - barely a blitz, players out of position (Warren is a 3 tech. and Burgess is a RDE), and the most complex thing we ran was a man combo in the short zones with LB’s passing off recievers to DB’s - it was a disaster when teams ran anything more than 3 WR sets.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:50 am
Nice talking, but Adios! for real.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:55 am
Cool BHP - I have another 30 mins before my bedtime - good chatting with you dude.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:59 am
DickV - I have 30 more mins if you want to get into scheme since BHP is retiring for the night. We can start with C. Long vs. DMac if you want. First watch this on DMac - it’s 10 mins long but it’s so worth it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJGTC-StZGI
Like I said, I think C Long is a major BUST, just so I’m on record.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:07 am
For you guys that say our D is outdated but it can work with the right personnel, you may be missing one thing.
Teams who battle these sames Defenses that are original and up to date for being competitive, that all fine and good. However, if we’re the only team out of 32 teams that use our man-to-man coverage scheme, then teams aren’t use to seeing what we do. They’re familiar with all the other teams defenses because they go against them all the time. Other than our division teams that go up against us twice, the other 28 teams go up against us once or even once every 2 to 3 years.
I would think that that’s a good thing. It’s looks like Al isn’t far having all the defensive personnel to make our D-line work…lets see what happens.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:14 am
Ho, ya, before I call it a nite. Chris Long will be OK, but he’s not going to give the production that Darren MaFadden is going to give us…no where near that. DF will make many many more All Pro Teams than LONG.
Long was given more hype because he’s the son of Howie Long, and Long is a commentator on FOX and still gets his exposure. However, that doesn’t mean his son Chris, who is smaller and lighter will strive at the pro level. The speed of the game or just the up grade in talent he will be going up against will give him a wake up call. He’ll be above average at best…but not a Pro_bowler.

Good nite guys…Friday almost here. Have a good one.

niether did Tim Brown or Jerry Rice.
I don’t know who came up with that stupid list.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:29 am
At the time, I thought the Raiders should’ve taken Long or traded back for o-line help. But if Jerry’s raves about McFadden (”best rookie I’ve seen since the Raiders came back to Oakland, and that includes Charles Woodson”) are accurate, then the Raiders definitely made the right call.
I think Jay Richardson is going to really emerge and be a perfect complement to Burgess, so Long isn’t a necessity. Trading back and getting o-line help may still have been the smart move, but if McFadden’s the next Marcus Allen you’d obviously take him over a couple of draft picks who may or may not pan out in the trenches.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:33 am
I have been listening to a lot of talk about McFadden. I have not heard ONE negative comment since he has been drafted.
While I think we could have used the number 4 on a more press need, I think McFadden is just a guy that is hard to pass up.

Let me ask this,
How many draft have we had were we drafted NEED instead of the best player.
Jano- I remember how many games are kicker lost for the the year before. This was a NEED pick.
Stinchcomb-Trying to sure up the o-line NEED
Gallery-Trying to rebuild the line NEED
Huff- In need of a Saftey that can cover and make plays NEED
This time, Al went for the best player available.

I can’t believe they haven’t cut Robert Gallery. This guy is pathetic and a big bust in the nfl. He will be the cause for russell being on his back most of the time. He will also have the most false starts and holding calls. Cable should be fired for keeping this idiot on the team. It’s frustrating that every year they give Gallery the starting position. They never let anyone compete against him. The coaching staff should be fired for this stupidity. The offensive line and defensive line will be the same pathetic story. A BIG BUST AGAIN!
