Training camp, Day 19 (P.M. practice)
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 11th, 2008 at 10:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from Monday night’s practice:
– The 23rd practice of training camp and the second-to-last night session of double days may very well have been the worst in terms of the passing game.
Included in the mishaps was a red zone pass by JaMarcus Russell which squirted more than 10 feet high in the air, with DeAngelo Hall coming up with a gift interception, and another by Russell which glanced off the hands of rookie running back Darren McFadden and in to the arms of linebacker Thomas Howard.
Practice ended with a four-down sequence which the Raiders attempted to get into field goal range. They got nowhere, with Russell’s fourth-and-10 pass sailing behind Drisan James, with Stanford Routt knocking it to the ground.
Mercifully, the three horns signifying the end of practice arrived. They ending a practice that in terms of the passing game brought to mind some of the poorly executed sessions of the last two years.
Kiffin scuttled plans for a full padded practice because he said the team was “too banged up.”
– McFadden, who fumbled and dropped balls in the first practice, continued to struggle in the second _ easily his worst day in a Raiders uniform.
– Running back Louis Rankin caught two routine passes over the middle which he at first juggled before securing.
– Wide receiver Ronald Curry missed practice with the sore hamstring which kept him out of the 49ers game. After a recent practice, Kiffin talked about how the receiving corps was worn down, and they looked it Monday night.
Drew Carter, who opened camp as one Oakland’s best receivers, has dropped off of late and had a drop in Monday’s practice. Javon Walker practiced both sessions in a day for just the second time this camp, but continues to struggle to regain his form. Jonathan Holland, another receiver who had solid moments earlier in camp, rarely gets reps with even the second team.
– Hall is playing with a cast on his right hand, the result of what Kiffin said is a sprain. He was pleased to see Hall remain on the field for a goal line drill rather than pull himself off the field.
“Even though we weren’t live, he came up and hit the guy almost as live as you could. Most guys right there you tell them to stay up, but our team needs to feel that. For a corner to go up inside a C gap, fit inside like that on a goal line and make a hit, I’m not going to slow that up.”
– Among those who did not practice were defensive end Derrick Burgess, left guard Robert Gallery, tight end Tony Stewart, defensive tackle Terdell Sands, wide receiver Arman Shields, cornerback Michael Waddell, cornerback John Bowie and tight end Darrell Strong. Burgess and Gallery were rested.
Running back Adimchinobe Echemandu left with a hamstring strain and may not be available to face Tennessee. Running back Michael Bush was limited with a stinger, but Kiffin thought he would play against the Titans.
– Kwame Harris was sent jogging twice for false start penalties and was joined by Walker and Mario Henderson. Tommy Kelly was penalized a lap for an offsides call, and responded by making it about six-tenths of a lap in a near comical walk-jog which lasted nearly two and a half minutes.
– Defensive end Trevor Scott easily got around Henderson on one pass rush attempt, only to have Henderson counter with a two-handed “punch” which knocked the smaller defensive end off his feet on the following play.
– Adam Archuleta, the Raiders’ newest acquisition, is wearing No. 42 and will get a look at both the strong side and weak side linebacker spots as well as on special teams. He got his feet wet Monday night, getting blocked successfully by the much larger Henderson on one play but getting in position for what would have been an open field tackle on a swing pass to Rankin on another.
After playing five years as a safety for the St. Louis Rams, Archuleta signed a lucrative free agent contract with the Washington Redskins but was out after a year. He joined the Chicago Bears and a familar system with coach Lovie Smith, his defensive coordinator in St. Louis.
Things didn’t work out any better in Chicago. Archuleta was hoping to land a job somewhere as a linebacker.
“It’s been in the back of my mind for awhile,” Archuleta said. “Once I got released from the Bears, I decided I wanted to. I enjoy playing in the box. That’s what gets me jazzed up so I decided I was going to try to make a run at linebacker.”
Archuleta is listed at 225 pounds and said he has put on some weight from the “215 or 216” he was at in recent weeks. The Raiders already have smallish starters in Kirk Morrison and Howard, and reserve Jon Alston is also in the 225 to 230 pound range.
“You’ve got to be smart, use your speed,” Archuleta said. “I played four years at ASU at 200 pounds. I played inside the box my whole career in the NFL . . . being down there with the big boys is really nothing new to me.”
He made no excuses for his time in Washington and Chicago.
“It was just a matter of not taking advantage of my opportunities and here I am,” Archuleta said. “It just didn’t work out. I just didn’t play very well.”
Said Kiffin: “We’re going to give him a chance like anybody else we bring in . . . there’s two (linebackers) right now that have made this team. The rest of the guys are battling so we’ll throw him out there and mix him around, see how it goes.”
Strong side linebacker Ricky Brown, running with the first team as the strong side backer until injuries struck, was back at practice.

“Tommy Kelly was penalized a lap for an offsides call, and responded by making it about six-tenths of a in a near comical walk-jog which lasted nearly two and a half minutes.”
…..
Looks like our scholarship players are working hard and serious about competing….
August 11th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Nice to see Mario Henderson starting to fight back a bit. Maybe he and Trevor Scott can push each other, and they’ll both be the better for it — although in fairness, Scott isn’t the one most in need of a push.

No worries, Nation. A wise man once said: “Don’t worry about Thurdsay when it’s Wednesday. Don’t worry about Sunday, when it’s Tuesday.”
The Raiders will be alright. They just need some rest.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
KoolKell sometimes you are right on the mark and coherent, other times I wanna pour a gallon of milk of magnesia down your throat.
Just sayin..
August 11th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Especially our highest paid scholarship players…
For the money Kelly is getting, which is about twice what he’s worth (by his own admission), you’d think he give a little more effort. But, why does he have to? Al’s going to keep him, no matter how bad he is, just to save face. His job is the safest on the Raiders.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Maybe he was tired..
August 11th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Mention 19-61 and the evangelicals start spouting scripture, Raider mottos and speaking in tongues.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
milk of magnesia that’s funny I burned him with a preparation H joke earlier. The other guy cant read to well you have to just ignore him. He sees what he wants to see, poor little handi-capped guy.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
MR…who are you talking to?
You just spew negative crap, but try to justify it as being something that a real RAIDER fan would think.
You are such a loser that it defies definition…please explain what makes you a RAIDER fan or why you are a fan of the RAIDERS…please…for once!
August 11th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
MR…you should come up here to Canada….you and KoolKell can get married legally up here.
still waiting for you to prove you ARE a RAIDER fan.
But you never have and never will because you are such a simp….get lost already…nobody likes you…you must be at least intelligent enough to know that aren’t you?
August 11th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
It wasnt as funny as cujo but very close..
Dakota, its going to be your job digging up all BHP post on DAMC before the draft calling him a skinny legges avg back with no power or moves “just speed”.
It will be a tedious job but well worth the payoff.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
I think it’s because our defense is going to be so damn good
There’s two sides to every story
August 11th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
MR — Putting words into other peoples’ mouths, like usual. Anything to win your point, even if it’s not true, right?
Kelly never admitted he was paid twice as much as he should’ve been. He said he was surprised to get the contract he got — not that he was overpaid.
Give us more of your “facts,” please!

Why mention 19-61?
August 11th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

From what Jerry just posted and what I saw up close in person friday night,..Russell will struggle the whole year,…so will the running game as they will all line up to stop it as the whole NFL will see real quick that the Raiders will not be able to pass at all,..the Raiders will be last in passing. Sorry but keeping it real.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
And the objective observers note that 19-61 is not an eternity — it only feels like it.
When the team finally busts out, who will get the blame for that? Certainly not Al, he couldn’t have had anything to do with it.
Predictable closed-mindedness.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
random drugtester its a media conjured hate statement made towards our rebuilding years after we had three legitimate shots at a Super Bowl 2000-2002 and had a team stocked with older players. Most teams take longer than 5 years to rebuild after a run like that.
These complaints you hear are not real fans but are band wagon jumping youngsters that want us to win before they jump off to another team. I think a 5 years losing streak is good for one thing…it weeds out the weak fans.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
I knew it was only a matter of seconds before OakGlenn/Random appeared…lol
OakGlenn, if RR spent as much time on our defense as you spend on this blog our defense might get ranked in the high teens for a change.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Hey MistaBrown…don’t go all “Oakglenn” on me…guys like him need to be dealt with head-on…he will post whether you respond or not…otherwise it is like the “Big Lie”….whatever he says will be accepted as an honest opinion or viewpoint unless it is countered.

You guys are all panicing too early, we will be fine. There is a long time before the games actually count, and we’re in for the best practice we can get right now. Keep the faith, we’ll be ok.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Actually Random, according to sistaclown you are me.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Us RAIDER fans know that the last 5 years are only a small percentage of the RAIDER legacy that includes much success and glory (all authored by Al)…and it has now placed us in a position to come back even stronger and able to dominate for a number of years to come.
To sit there and say “19-61″ therefore “we suck” is to label yourself unable to see things beyond the immediate.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Oak, I dont see the contradiction maybe you can read it again and point it out for all of us?
August 11th, 2008 at 10:36 pm

he will come around. We all saw how well he played vs the chargers when he was out of shape last year

August 11th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
KoolKell calm down I know you missed medication time at the mental institution today but tomorrow nurse will come by and it will all be better and then you can go back to mumbling incessantly about last year.
You have one point correct and that is, you are only as good as your last season. Which means we are still a 4-12 team until this years team shows otherwise.
Now go to bed before you have a heart attack from reading the blog!
August 11th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Wow. Just a few days away from the Titans game and the offense is going backwards.

August 11th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
We are not 19-61.
We are 0-0, with a meaningless-yet-somehow-significant preseason “win” under our belts. The Raiders are as good as any team in the NFL right now.
Now, that’s what’s happening right now.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
OakGlenn, I see you backing out already.
Point out the contradiction or go back to posting under your aliases…
August 11th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
What is interesting tho, fans, is in the last game, we ran a base 4 defense, a 52, Man, Man with Zone under, 3 deep, and late in the game a 46. However not one person has come in here and said, Holy Sh**, we ran 6 or 7 different defenses instead of the only one defense that sista clown thinks is all we run. You would think that if our defense completely changed up, someone would have noticed. But no one did. The Reason???? Because we ran all these same defenses last year. Only dumbass sistaclown doesn’t think we did.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Dirty,
How can a WR elevate the play of the QB if the QB isnt putting the ball where it supposed to be ? You have it backwards my friend. JR needs to step his game up or I’ll be shouting for AW.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
practice is practice, their just trying to open up the playbook for the passing game based on the gameplan going against the titans, id rather have jamarcus do some damage now then too self-destruct during the regular season, as lane kiffin says it ” we will utilize our playmakers”. If that quote doesnt translate onto the feild this upcoming season w/ a losing record yakno the drill! Just FIRE baby!
August 11th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Yo random, both the defense and special teams will score points, there is just too much speed, the question is how many, and can they stay away from turnovers, if so, they win 10.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Remember Dirty every one of those guys is coming off an injury. And I can tell the WR’s are playing tentative. Walker practically had his jaw busted, so you KNOW he’s going to favor his grill a bit. All of them are going to favor something. Drew Carter twisted his knee up in the Whiner game and came right to the sideline, but he’s OK. Curry didn’t even suit up. On a plus side, both Higgins and Watkins look like they can play. We’ve got another month to get these guys ready. We will.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Personally, Random I didn’t think Rankin looked that good. He was VERY tentative hitting the hole, and the runs he did make was against 3rd team scrubs not against Patrick Willis and Co. He’s not gonna make the team, but he may make the practice squad.

Pirate,
JR’s play is making me nervous I hope the next 3 games is what he needs, his game is VERY shaky right now & the pass blocking has to get better.

August 11th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Dirty clearly misplaced throws. Obviously some bad routes too, but mainly misplaced throws. Everyone here thinks you just step back and turn into Manning to Harrison or Unitas to Berry, in two practices. Ain’t gonna happen. Think about it, Montana to Rice took a year to develop. AND THOSE GUYS ARE HALL OF FAMERS. There’s a lot of timing and reads, and trust that takes a while to develop. Our guys will do that, it’s just gonna take some time. There’s gonna be some growing pains.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Why do I get the feeling that if sistaclown was a fan of the ‘89 whiners he would’ve wanted Steve Bono ahead of Montana and Young?????

Post #79: Ignorant stupidity we’ve come to expect from the clown.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
The passing game will be far from the worst in the league: the niners, Titand, Atlanta, and Miami all are pretty bad. Baltimore gots to look pretty rough if Troy Smith is possibly the starter at this stage of his career. The Raiders will have a subpar passing game for sure, but lets not just shrivel up completely. jerry has made a point to comment that the passing game has improved. We see an upgrade in talent. We have one man taking all the snaps and building chemistry with the team, one leader uniting the team: no telling how much this team will improve, but we know with certainty they are better. Lets just try to have a little optimism. i am directing this towards ” I Will”. I know all that alcohol and pill poppin has put a damper on your man hood, but damn lets try to have a little swagger.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Alright I’ll back off… We all new he had placement issues coming into the draft… I just expect more passes caught in practice then 35%
August 11th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
By the way, if anyone has Sirius Radio, the training camp tour is at the Raider’s camp tomorrow starting at 12:00.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
You guys we have a QB who has made one NFL start. One. He played not even one quarter of the exhibition game against the Whiners. If you watched him in the season finale against the Dischargers, as the game went on, he got better and better. That same thing is going to happen as the year goes on. Remember, it’s not like he is on his fourth year with this group of WR’s. They’ve only been together for two weeks!!!

JR’s play is making me nervous I hope the next 3 games is what he needs, his game is VERY shaky right now & the pass blocking has to get better.
Once again, spoken by someone who does not have a clue what he is seeing.

We’ve had three weeks of positive reports - it’s good to see some regression at this stage from a mental aspect. The staff has beaten them down, they are tired of camp, and they’re making some mistakes. It allows the staff to push them even further - the next two pre-season games are key, especially the third where both teams will play their starters through the first half. Obviously we won’t know anything until week three. We should beat Denver, KC, and the bills. We have far more talent on both sides of the ball against all three teams, so there are no excuses if we don’t go 3 and 0 on paper. However, anything can happen in game 1 and the next two are on the road, so it’s not even close to guaranteed. If we can pull 2 and 2 over the first 4 games heading into the bye week, fix whatever the problems may be, continue to gel, we should be good for the rest of the year. But like I said, in order to turn the corner you gotta beat the weaker teams and teams within your own division that are down, and hold serve at home so if we are going to be agood team this year, we should be 3 and 0 with SD coming to town, and that where the proverbial rubber meets the road.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
On the sirius camp coverage. Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan are great radio duo that ooze with knowledge. They will have as about as in depth and unbiased analysis you will find. I can’t wait to hear their take on the 08 Raiders. Kirwan and Ryan are close with kiff but both are skeptical of the old man. i strongly suggest that everyone get Sirius for their show if nothing else.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
Wow 86 posts and no actual football discussed. Just a bunch of “we’ll be fine” versus “19-61″ nonsense.
the team won’t magically “be fine”. They need to get their acts together and have three weeks to do it.
On the other hand the team is improving.
JR isn’t going to light it up. He is going to be a hot and cold rookie. Rankin probably ends up on the practice squad. AA will try out at LB and be lucky not to be Darnell Bing 2008. The team will run the ball and struggle against the run.
All this extreme reaction to every little practice pass is foolish. This is a team that stank and is climbing its way to average.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Exactly Jedi. You want mistakes at this point. With some of the guys, (Jamarcus, Dmac) the game comes sooooo easy to them, that if all of sudden they come here and uber excel, they start not taking it quite as seriously as they should. Making lots of mistakes and effing up, is going to help those guys and help the team!!

Thank you Jedi! A football post. I personally agree with your assessment except the Bills are a playoff contending team this year and I don’t think we have a paper advantage over them. They have a superior pass offense and run D to us. It’ll be an interesting match-up.
Tenn this Friday gives a look at how improved our run D is with Kelly playing 3 gap.

And for those of you “nervous” about Jams play, go back to the first play from scrimmage in the Whiner game. Went with a hard count, got the Whiners to jump, knew he had a free play, identified the guy in single isolation off to his left side, and threw a VERY CATCHABLE ball out there that Carter could not come down with. But again he did everything right. And just so you guys know, throwing a deep go route to the opposite side, is not the easiest of throws. And he did it beautifully.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
I agree with COW. The bills should be a good team this year. The should be 8-8 or better.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Cow, the run game will be JR’s saving grace. He might have to make a few plays in the 4th with the run game and defense. Javon and Dmac are capable of making plays, and curry, miller can move the chains. as usual every game will come down to one or two plays. I am excited. it isn’t magic, but it isnt too complicated.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
OakGlenn, just keep saying whatever fits your agenda as if nobody here has eyes or ears.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
You really are a moron. I was actually at the game, not listening to the broadcast. The ball was perfectly thrown as a jump ball for the much bigger Carter to go up and get. Walt Harris, who is a solid corner, made the play. You have NO CLUE what you are seeing. Maybe you can take up cooking or something, you complete imbecile.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
og i agree with you. Jr did a solid job. he made the right reads, and made quick sound decisions in the limted time he had. Whats wrong with that?

August 11th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Post 111
That ball to Carter was underthrown. Carter had 2-3 steps on his man when JR released the ball, by the time it got there the DB made a play.
Did you hear the telecast? Pappa said JR took a shot
because of the penalty and Flores corrected him and said it was the called play.
OakGlenn do you need glasses ? I have the game on DVR by the way..
August 11th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

LMAO
I was at the game to but theres this new thing called DVR you should really look into it and then you might save yourself some embarrassment. You remember the SB right ?
They removed my post because I used a profanity.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
LMAO @ jump ball !!!!!!!!!!!!!
hahha
JR threw a jump ball to Walker maybe your confused or just stupid I dunno.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Dick V, you’re exactly right!! What this useless pile of crap doesn’t get is he executed the play call. I never said he drew the play up, I said he executed it to perfection. You know those little tiny pee wee kids that were playing at half time??, well, they know that if Jam just aired it out, the safety would have come across and picked it. But of course this guy clown doesn’t know that. 5 year olds that play pee wee would know that, but somehow sista clown doesn’t. So they went for the 25 yard completion and Harris broke it up. Good for Harris. He made a nice play. Sista take up cooking or embroidery or something else PLEASE!!! All of us are imploring you to do so. You are just embarrasing yourself.
August 12th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Yeah oakglenn, it’s like hitting the cliche plateau - you gotta fail to progress and then fight through the failure to improve. In any sport you know when you had a bad day - when it’s obvious that everyone has had a bad day in practice, especially after doing things well in the previous game, you know you can do better - that’s when you’re really able to make the leap to the next stage.
For all the doubters out there, last year we were a legitimate 8-8 team, we just got the bad end of the deal in 4 winnable games (Den, KC, Ten, and take your pick of Chi, Det, or Hou), which is why I expect improvement commesurate with that of an 8-8 team on the rise (10 plus wins). Given our infusion of talent, another year in the offensive system, and most importantly a QB with an arm and mobility and WR’s to stretch the field to make D’s pay off play action, we should expect nothing less. I am a huge Kiffin fan just because he has the schnutts to do things his way and is running a smart system based on available talent, but he doesn’t get us to a very competitive level this year, I won’t have a problem replacing him.

I agree. Russell’s pass was underthrown and was thrown to the inside of the field instead of towards the sideline. That pass should have been deeper to let the WR run under it or fly out of bounds.
A better DB could have made a play on that ball. Russell got excited and threw a bad pass.
If the ball was on target, it might have drawn an interference call.
August 12th, 2008 at 12:03 am
I hope they give Fargas some more carries in the second preseason game so we can see what he has to give use as a starter this year.

August 12th, 2008 at 12:06 am
K-Rock, he did not take a seven step drop to throw the deep ball. He took a short drop and threw it up for Carter.

Jump ball
This is better than Laurel & Hardy!
August 12th, 2008 at 12:13 am
K-Rock clearly that wasn’t the best throw he’s ever made, but it went right thru the receivers hands. Imbecile here once again does not understand the concept of throwing a jump ball or throwing behind a receiver which almost every QB does. Jam didn’t on that play. It wasn’t the best throw, but the WR should have caught it.
August 12th, 2008 at 12:13 am
I didnt know Kiffin was using Walsh’s playbook - 7 step drop lol
August 12th, 2008 at 12:15 am
This week should show us what the run stopping ability of our defense is with as a good running offense in tenn. We won the running game last week so lets see what happens this week. C johnson is someone I would have liked to pick up but we got McFadden instead so lets see witch one preforms better. I’m hope that Walker and Carter can make a WR pair that can aid Jmac in Passing downs! I would like to see Fargas play more then he has to prove his capability as a starting RB.
August 12th, 2008 at 12:16 am
JR can throw 60 yards on his knees why would he need to drop back 7 steps to throw 40 yards ?
August 12th, 2008 at 12:18 am
I wasn’t at the game, so there are a few things I could not see on tv
1. Did Carter recognize the offsides
2. Did he get his head around in time
One thing I did see at the end…
It did not look like Carter adjusted well to the ball.

It is time to let Russell throw the ball down fied. Lets get what we paid for! No time for dump off passes not with his arm. He needs to execute NOW not wait for the regular season before throwing down field. This teams needs a 2 prong attact on offence. Go Raiders!
August 12th, 2008 at 3:27 am
Adam Archuleta is going to do nothing. Nothing to see here
August 12th, 2008 at 3:30 am
A lot of you guys have been banking on Jammy to be a savior. Shiiiit…the guy has like played ONE game and this is his first camp.
Don’t expect too much! Most QB’s take 3 years to get good.
Face it, our passing game is going to blow this year. We have no go to guys at receiver and our OL is weak in pass protection and we have a rookie QB.
August 12th, 2008 at 3:33 am
Vincent > the last thing we need is for Jammy to try to go deep all the time under pressure and turn the ball over and have our defense get worked by teams who can run the ball.
We need to scrap for yardage and feild position and try to get some field goals and not turn the ball over. AND then hope our defense comes through. If we give up cheap turnovers our D and our opponents get cheap points then they can run, which will kill us.
We need to control the ball, scramble for points and force the other teams to pass.

I would trade Russell right now for a 1st round pick, and start Walters, should have started walters all along and drafted C. Johnson. The Raiders will have a good season and should win 7-9 games. If Russell advances quickly, maybe more. Kiffin, please let Russell throw a few more balls in the preseason though.
August 12th, 2008 at 6:11 am
I on the other hand would give Jammy (who is the best QB prospect in many years) to develop instead of trading him for a lousy first round pick.
August 12th, 2008 at 6:24 am
by the way, I blew out my hammy yesterday….jesus I’m getting old!
August 12th, 2008 at 6:59 am
I agree copen, russell to go deep is the last thing we need. Though id love to see him rip a few off, id rather get him to make the correct reads, and be decisive in his decision making so that we can be a consistant team in the passing game and that is predicated on the running game and how well the line blocks for jruss and the crew. I just like to see some improvement this week against tenn.
August 12th, 2008 at 7:16 am
We don’t want Jrus to be like culpepper who got his stats by throwing it up for grabs to moss all the time,he showed problems reading the defense and kiffin is doing a great job ingetting russell to make the right reads go to check downs….throw ball away when nuthing is there, we need a smart qb to lead the way and I believe with time jruss can be that guy

You will get the drops in practice on occassion
but the Raiders receviers should be all pumped up
to make every catch because there are a number of
receviers that will not be making the team. Walker
is a real concern and I think the issue with Drew
Carter was durability and well now we are seeing it
happen before us.

August 12th, 2008 at 8:35 am

August 12th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Kiffin’s not a hater. He’s just pissed that he doesn’t have control of personnel and wants everyone to know it.
Let’s face it - team chemistry isn’t going to be great this year. The defense may band together under Ryan, and the RB’s and OL will probably jell, but there is an overall fracture that will probably hurt before it’s over. It’s Kiffin’s job to fix that and we’ll have to see if he can do it.
Still a much better team than last year, no doubt about it.

TX is the same way. It depends on where you are in the state.
It gets cold at night, but it will warm up during the day. Sometimes cold fronts can bring really cold weather, but that is not the norm. Jan. and Feb. are normally the coldest months here. The average number of days below freezing is 19, and these usually last only a few hours since they are usually accompanied by clear skies.
THE ABOVE DESCRIPTION IS ONLY FOR SOUTHEAST TEXAS.
Every region of the state is different.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:01 am
I agree with those who think that kiff should turn JaMarcus loose especially these next couple of preseason games. Preseason is the time when you practice the sh*t that you don’t do so well. We already know the Raiders are gonna be able to run the ball very well on just about anybody. So let the offensive line practice pass blocking, and let Russell and the receivers start to get a rythm, and feel for the passing game. Don’t wait until the season begins to work on this stuff.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:11 am
For those of you who don’t like Janiporkski, the Dolphins released Jay Feely today.
He is 80% for his career, but is coming of a 2007 year with Miami in wich he was 91% with a long of 53. He was 1-1 from beyond 50 yards, 7-9 from 40-49 yards, and perfect inside of 40.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:20 am

August 12th, 2008 at 9:33 am
It is frustrating to see other teams like the falcons throwing the ball all around with their rookie we will never get to see what we got untill we actually throw the damn ball……….I agree with the previous post we know what we do well already lets get the stuff we don’t down so when the season starts we will have more confidence in the passing game, being one dimentional will not work in this league
August 12th, 2008 at 9:33 am
I am also concened about the recieveing corps.
After watching friday nights game again, time and time again you see recievers standing next to our running backs after the tacklelooking at each other. Block, stand in the way, do SOMETHING. Opposing teams are going to stack the box, we need consistent play from the WR’s, sell the route, block when needed and fight for the ball.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:41 am
By comparison, Janikowski is 76% for his career, but has been 67%, 72%, an 71% the last 3 years.
The league average is 82%.
Feely may not have the leg of Janikowski, but he was 8-10 from beyond 40 with a long of 53 yards. He was 21-23 for the year.
Janikowski was 23-32 with a long of 54.
But to be fair, their numbers were close inside of 50 yards. What hurt Janikowski was Kiffin trying 11 FGs from 50 yards or longer. Janikowski was 6-11 from beyond 50.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Kiffin might be a gun shy coach…he may lack the courage necessary to allow Russell to develop his arm at this point in time. Why? Well Kiffin may be feeling the pressure from above to win, and the only way he thinks he can win is to be conservative in pass calling situations.
If Al gave him the blessing to let Russell loose and to start developing his down the field passing abilities without holding Russell’s errors over Kiffin’s head, then maybe we would see him allow Russell more latitude. But as of right now Kiffin is fighting for his job and is therefore very conservative with Russell. Which is probably the way to go. We need to have patience this year, because Kiffin needs to win and to do that Russell will have to make as few mistakes as possible because our margin for winning games is pretty miniscule.

I just picked up a copy of Madden 09…it better be superior to last year’s sheeety game.

Dakota…
Let me know what you think of Madden. I am waiting to hear from some folks before I buy a copy.

Dakota,
I agree that it makes sense during the regular season to bring Russell along slowly and conservatively. But this is pre-season, these games don’t count for nuthin. Al’s not gonna fire Kiffin for losing a pre-season game, especially if Kiff were just to talk to Al and Russell and tell them, “look, these games don’t matter, so we’re gonna do some experimenting, just to see where you’re at”. They might be pleasantly surprised. And if he stinks it up, at least they’ll know there’s still a bunch of work left to do.

Yeah…. but with our pass blocking…we don’t want to get the Franchise killed.

K-rock..
thanks I have no idea how it is, My father has been to san antonnio several times, and he hate the heat…
I was thinking to take a trip to the meditareania or usa in late december, since my mother died, christmas is just something there is in the way..
i’m a weak fu©ker, so humidity kills me… today here in DK its 88% and i wanna kill myself.. heat and cold is not the biggest problem, but humidity simply makes my body want to dissolve it self =)

Speaking of Madden, here is a funny a$$ article from a guy who reviewed the game for ESPN in a 24 hour span, and he played with the Raiders the whole time in franchise mode. After playing so many games, he simulated the rest of the years, and come to find out, McFadden leads us to a SuperBowl win in 2012. The article cracks me up though ’cause of course, some of the plays he talks about the Raiders making are no where near believable, yet they offer some promise that at least a video game thinks we’ll be good! Check it out. It’s a decent size article but entertaining nonetheless.

Some of you guys are overlooking Buffalo. Thats a pretty solid team they have. They gave Dallas a run for their money last year. Our boys have to fly cross country to play them. Its not going to be a cake walk. I currently expect 2 wins by the by week (Denv, KC). Anything above that will be a huge plus.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:15 am
The team could actually beat SD and sweep the division their 1st go around. But they will only beat SD by stopping that run game and not turning the ball over. Last year, they stopped the run game but the turnovers were the real reason for the lost. (Damn Sims!)

I agree it is preseason for crying out loud.
Put the ball down the d@mn field.
JAM’s gift is hi cannon let him use it every once in awhile. It is preseason who cares if he throws and interception better now than later.
If we think we are going to win this year by dumping the ball to the tightend and backs when we are not running the ball it is not going to happen.
I don’t care if Walker gets smashed into next year throw him the ball in the game and let him use all of that Vegas magic to go get the d@mn ball. This is football a contact sport put the ball out there and let these high paid ticket phenoms earn their money.
Lets be honest a preseason SF win is bull crap. They are at the bottom of the bucket just like we are. It is time to dig in and get some wins.

The most important addition to this defense probably wasn’t DHall but GWilson. If the few plays in the 1st preseason game are any indication this guy has got the fire we need at SS. That plus, his addition allowed Huff to move to FS (a better fit for him).
I was taken back, just a little, as I saw Huff race in kamakasy(sp?) style to lay a hit on the WR Morgan on that slant route. He didn’t lock him up but he put his ass airborne and spilled him on the ground. Thats the sort of agression we need.
In short, the acquistion of Gibril killed could kill two birds with one stone. Better at FS & SS.

Just got my copy of madden 09, I can’t wait to get home to play…… I downloaded the demo and let me say visually the game is freaking stunning and I noticed to how much more loose and smossth the guys move, they don’t run like robots like on last years game and to pass the ball is awsome u can always see ur recievers. I just can’t wait to see the ratings for the guys. With the 4.3 of dmc he better have a 98 or 99 in the speed department and jruss should have 100 in arm atrength

Terrapin,
They wouldn’t let me post the link, but go google Archuleta’s wife, Jennifer Walcott.
She is the best addition to the defense!
August 12th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Terrapin - Felt the same way when Huff made that tackle early in the game. Regardless of the people around that play, that was a major open field tackle that could have been a huge play for the receiver since he was gaining full speed on the play, and Huff raced onto the t.v. screen out of no where and blew his ass up. Easily the best tackling play I’ve seen him make in awhile (which is ironic being he didn’t wrap up)

I am sorry I got a little pumped up.
It happens when you push paper all day.
Is it Friday night yet? The Titans will be a
good match for them in the trenches.
Please pass the freakin ball.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:27 am
S&B Bleeder,
I agree, I remember Huff making alot of good open field hits at Texas. When he came to Oakland he disappeared playing out of position.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Dirty - That article says they gave D-Dawg a 97 speed rating. I think he should have gotten a 100 personally. Hester is the only guy in the history of the game to get a 100 speed rating. McFadden though has already made several announcers/analysts compare his speed with the ball to that of Deion’s who was by far the fastest guy I’ve ever seen run with a football…
August 12th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Buffalo may be a solid team on the defensive side of the ball but I believe we can beat them in week three they don’t scare ne one on offense
August 12th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Hey Howies Neck roll,
Are we gonna have a different line pass blocking once the regular season starts?
I can understand your point of not wanting Russell to get killed, but on the other hand, like CJ says, this is a contact sport, and Russell’s a pretty big kid.
So kiff needs to stop treating him like he’s made of glass, and give him a realistic taste of what he’s gonna be in for. Plus it’ll give the line some practice before the season begins.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:34 am
IT was a solid hit. Knocked his legs out from under him.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Howie’s Neck - Yeah, this is a big put up or shut up year for Huff, or he’ll go down as another Al Davis draft day mishap, where “If you’re a DB with any sort of speed, Al will invite you to our facilities for a workout! Come on down. Who cares you don’t know how to really play football?” Lol…j/k Al has done no wrong in the draft (1st round at least) the past two years so he’s swimming in good graces with the nation for now..
August 12th, 2008 at 10:37 am
One thing about Kiff is he’s a
