Training camp, Day 21 (P.M. notes)
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 at 9:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from Wednesday night’s practice, the Raiders’ final workout in Napa, with information relayed by beat writer Steve Corkran:
– So much for the theory of Edgerton Hartwell providing a run-defending presence inside. Hartwell was released to make room for punter Glenn Pakulak, who will punt against the Tennessee Titans Friday night after a quad injury suffered by Shane Lechler.
Pakulak boomed several punts inside the 5-yard line, with impressive hang time and distance. Johnnie Lee Higgins dropped one punt, which likely owed to Pakulak’s being a left-footed punter and the ball rotating differently than those from Lechler.
At one point, safety Jarrod Cooper yelled: “Hey, we got ourselves a punter.”
– Cornerback Michael Waddell, defensive tackles Terdell Sands and Tommy Kelly, center Jake Grove and right offensive tackle Cornell Green returned to practice
– The following players missed practice: running back Justin Fargas, safety Tyvon Branch, tight ends Darrell Strong and Tony Stewart, wide receivers Javon Walker, Ronald Curry and Arman Shields, cornerback John Bowie, kicker Sebastian Janikowski and running back Adimchinobe Echemandu.
Kiffin said Echemandu was in Los Angeles to take his citizenship test and will meet the team in Nashville.
– The final play of camp was one the Raiders would rather forget. Fourth-string quarterback Jeff Otis turned to his left, pitched the ball in the general vicinity of running back Louis Rankin and watched as the ball sailed well behind and past Rankin. Seconds later, three horns sounded, Kiffin huddled his players and declared camp over.
– JaMarcus Russell connected with wide receiver Drew Carter on back-to-back touchdown passes in full-team drills.
– On one play, running back Darren McFadden, left guard Robert Gallery and left offensive tackle Kwame Harris moved before the snap. McFadden jumped first and was ordered to take a lap.
– Defensive back Nick Sanchez intercepted a Russell pass that hit off Carter’s hands and returned it for a touchdown. This marked Sanchez’s second interception in two days since joining the Raiders.
– DeAngelo Hall practiced without a cast on his injured right hand. He avoided contact, for the most part, and didn’t catch any balls during individual drills. At one point, he appeared to aggravate his injury by bumping into a receiver. He remained on the field, however, and didn’t require treatment.
– John Wade and Jake Grove split time with the first-team offense at center. Kiffin said after the morning session that Wade would start against Tennessee.
– Higgins and Carter spent most of the time working with the first-team offense in Curry’s and Walker’s absence.
– Tight end Tony Stewart’s left foot was in a protective boot.
The Raiders offense looked much sharper in 7-on-7 and full-team drills than it did either of the past two days. The quarterbacks completed numerous passes to wide receivers and didn’t rely as much on checkdowns to running backs.

August 13th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Good to see Hall out there sticking with it and playing thru the pain.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
poor ed got released for punter. i’d be pissed
August 13th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
sounds like a better practice for the offense
GO RAIDERS!!!
August 13th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Camp’s done… bring it on home, boys, and then pluck the strings from those Tennesseans who fiddle in football.
Raider on,
Guamanian Raider
August 13th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Even though it’s another flukey pick, Sanchez got himself another one in two days. It’ll be good to keep an eye on him. Thats already more picks than Derrick Gibson’s last season with us…Lol
August 13th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Who cares about Nnamdi and Hall?? We got Nick Sanchez intercepting the rock!
Well, the good news about everyone on the squad being tired and irritable, is you have to take it out on someone. That someone is the Tennessee Titans.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
The Whiner coaching staff was complaining about their Monday and Tuesday practices as well. Seems like guys came off the high of playing in front of 50,000 fans and were a little lethargic and disinterested. That’s why coaching staffs give players a nice swift in the rump.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
should have said nice swift KICK in the rump.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Hopefully Drew Carter shows us something in this Friday’s game. Because he’s bigger, I’d like to see him beat out Curry, though Curry has silver blood in his veins with his experience here.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Glad to hear that Wade is starting at center over (I got
bigger and stronger but I still can’t block the NT. I always need help)= GROVE. Wade will do a much better job and has years of experience.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Yeah, that battle is interesting considering Kiff seemed like he was leaning towards Grove all camp. Should have known though when they released the depth chart and both names were at the 1st spot divided by a slash. Grove’s size and strength should have took the spot outright, but obviously he hasn’t.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
There’s a lot more to playing center than just blocking your guy. You have to make the line calls, and be the leader of the line. I guess it’s time to see what Wade can do in that respect.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
…we actually got some completions to WR’s.
Nnamdi and Hall banged up hhhmmm
don’t know much about TN
I do know they got a boatlaod of rushing yards last week
Good test for the run D on Friday night
Show me sumthin JM

August 13th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
uuuuuuggggghhhhhhhh…..I wish we could stay healthy!!! It sucks having to release people for punters and kickers.
August 13th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
So jerry im not going to ask you again. how is ADAM ARCHULETA DOINGGGGGGGG?????? Jeez man. Get it together
August 13th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

it’s not a good sign that a 10 year vet is beating out a 3rd year early round pick…in his prime.

August 13th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Tennessee will be a key test for us..looking forward to it win or lose. Of course we will WIN BABY!
August 13th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
I would rather see my starters miss training camp and pre-season time with minor injuries than see them play and practice and get major injuries.
Trust me….these guys and the coaching staff are quite happy to have them sit out now with nicks and cuts as opposed to losing them for the year with real injuries…a la Farwell for Minnesota
August 13th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Actually Steely, you heard Kiff. He wants competition. Just imagine if the boss came in and gave your job away. Doing that has the tendency to fire up guys who really want to play. I wouldn’t read too much into it. Let’s see how Wade does the ones.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Im going to miss hartwell brown
August 13th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

Lets see what our O line does against haynesworth
August 13th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Good news…Kiff called the team out and the team responded for the most part. It’s important to remember that Kiffin is a PR machine. He constantly puts stuff out to the media that is contrary to what he actually believes. Jamarcus with the first pick in 07? “Well he’s really talented but…”. Same story with McFadden. He is running the same game as Belichek in New England - Never Happy with his teams performance. That’s the mark of a great head coach. Now, because Kiffin is also calling the plays and running the offense, he must produce on that front as well, but his head coaching skills are excellent as far as the motivation factor is concerned. He’s also honest on both fronts - calling Javon out when he hasn’t showed up and then giving him praise when he did, and admitting that he has been rough on him. It shows the players that he can be appeased if they put forth full effort and live up to thier potential. That’s the head coach I want, as opposed to “Robert’s (Gallery) going to be fine” from Art Shell and the random vagueness from Norv Turner.
Truth be told, Kiffin took a team that was so depleted in talent, committment, and scheme and turned it into a respectable franchise in year 1. Let’s see what Parcells does in Year 1 of his leadership. It would have been really easy if McCown was the QB but they got pennington so it will be relative.
Anyway, Kiffin has established himself as the leader of this team, is running it the way it should be run, and is implemening a functional scheme in light of our youth and talent. Let’s see what we can do the next two weeks and move forward from there.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I can’t believe Ed Hartwell couldn’t make this team. Is the depth at the linebacker position that much better than him? The guy was handling his business in the first pre-season game as he was one of the leaders in tackles. We don’t have another solid Middle Linebacker so WTF?
Are we better off with Grant Irons? Alston? Archuleta? Ricky Brown? Robert Thomas? Sam Williams? Give me an effin break man. I’m sick and tired of Ryan bringing back guys like Irons, who can’t EVER stay healthy and has never been good to begin with. Who cares if his father was good. He sucks. Game Ready? When? Ricky Brown? Hes been on this team forever and hasn’t done anything. Sam Williams? Seriously? Theres no reason that Hartwell should have been cut. Hes better than all those scrubs.

Hartwell could be back next week, once Shane returns?
ya never know
August 13th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Jedi Raider:
As usual, an excellent post, insightful and down to the fundamentals that separate the good from the great. You’re right on target…Kiffin knows how to play the media and how to motivate his players, how to push them through his comments to the media, and then, more importantly, how to praise them when they need that uplift and that encouragement to get better. Better for them and better for the team as a whole. Kiffin is always preaching the team concept and that’s what it all about.
I hope that he and the mighty Al Davis can co-exist and that we become the team to be feared and respected as we were once before. The building blocks are being made and now it’s only a matter of proper placement.
Go Raiders…Go Lane Kiffin and go the mighty one (AD).
August 13th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Huff24:
I agree with you totally. Irons??? Give me a break and if not him there seems to be others less productive and not in our areas of stronger need??? I thought Hartwell was doing all right and he brings help to an area of need?
August 13th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Steelyone:
You may be right about Hartwell coming back next week or so, but it’s not a motivating thing to be cut like that, especially when it seems to many of us that there are more expendable players around?
August 13th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
I’m disappointed that Hartwell didn’t show up enough, but at least they tried to bring in some talent. I thought he deserved a couple more games, but training camp must have proved otherwise. It just goes to show that the scrap heap doesn’t always provide serviceable players, and emphasizes the importance of the draft and early free agency. We made strong FA moves and signed young players with years ahead of them. I anticipate a much better season, the playoffs and dethroning SD from the AFC west lead are not out of the question at all. We should demand, not expect, very good things this year.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Finally, some semi-encouraging news about the passing game. Let’s hope Kwame Harris can stay healthy all year!
August 13th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
i wannna see russell and carter play well together on friday. we keep hearing about it in practice and dont get to see it.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Amen Riverside - wish I could have said it like you did. I’m an Al Davis fan, personally speaking, love him or hate him in recent years he made the Raiders and the legacy will last forever. In sports, I always loved to be feared, hated, and respected simultaneously. There’s no better feeling in a competitive environment. 100 years from now, whether we’re up or down in the age of parity, bearing in mind the salary cap, equal scouting and personnel departments, and cyclical swings of dominance and rebuilding, the legacy of the Raiders will transcend it all. There is only one team that everyone loves to hate, one bully on the block, one maverick organization, one team and fan base that expects to win every year, and that is us.
August 14th, 2008 at 12:01 am
JediRaider:
Well said, but more importantly, what gives your words meaning is that they’re based on facts and forty plus years of history. Davis doesn’t care about riches, fancy houses, vacations or just accumulated wealth. He only wants to win. There are only a hand full of owners like him and I place him on top.
It’s after midnite, so it’s Thursday and tomorrow we can to see how we battle in Tennesse. Good nite Nation.
August 14th, 2008 at 1:37 am
How bad is it to Ed Hartwell’s ego & pride to know that he was given the boot in order to make room for a punter who wont even be on the roster come opening day of the season. Yeah some say he might be resigned but what are the odds? I dont know why they havent taken a look at Marcus Tubbs. People have been saying we need more D-lineman and he’s in the market. Cant wait for Friday’s game. Let us all pray for Unsuper Mario Brother is he starts Friday. YA KNOW?!
August 14th, 2008 at 1:55 am
Amen again Riverside - there isn’t an NFL owner, for better or worse, that is more comitted to winning than Al Davis.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:05 am
Rick - I feel your pain (and hartwell’s). We need to bring every swinging d*ck at LB and DT that we can to complete the starting roster on defense. We have too many three techniques and one dud at NT (Sands). We need a run stuffer STAT!
If unsuper mario does start on Friday, the first hit J Rock takes will be his last (either because he gets knocked out of the game or because Kiffin ain’t risking his *ss for more abuse). Kiffin is dead on right about this game - one of the best D lines vs. our o line and one of the best run teams and running QB’s vs. our dline. This is a good test and there’s nothing we can do but wait and see what happens.
I’m a little upset that Kiffin doesn’t want to open up the offense during the preseason. I understand the rationale, but its frustrating to not know if we’re ready to go for the regular season with this young team considering we play all three of our division rivals in the first 4 weeks and the bills are in the AFC as well - very little margin for error if we lose these games even if we gain momentum as the season progresses.

JediRaider:
Post 35 is right on the money about KIffin.
August 14th, 2008 at 4:59 am
Russell had a good day tonight it seems if he hit Carter TWICE on deep TDs in full team drills. Yet you only hear McDonald and company give details about the negative passes and negative practices in general.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:02 am
Id be very careful with henderson trying to protect jruss’s backside going up against a formidable d line I pray he does a good job and maybe boost the confidence of himself, the coaches, and us the fans. I truly believe that cutting hartwell was a mistake, he probably wasn’t a RR guy like them other ass lickers like irons andt alston we need a freakin run stopping lb and we sign archuleta??? Blood is shooting out of my eyes man wtf are we doing?!?!?! If we can’t stop the run then it will be a lost cause because we had a chance to solidify the d line and oline but chose to sign archuleta and stick with super mario………..im worried!
August 14th, 2008 at 5:11 am
We need to take a flyer on Marcus Tubbs. YA KNOW?!
August 14th, 2008 at 5:14 am

Lets hope kiffin sticks around long term. great teams like those good ones have consistency at the head coach position. this lets players know who’s boss.
Also winning becomes more consistent with a scheme in place and young talent. and thats what the raiders are doing.
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!
and lane kiffin
August 14th, 2008 at 6:15 am
Young Sanchez may surprise us all. He only had one year under young Harbaugh who had to rebuild a train wreck. Harbaugh’s predecessor kept running off all the track star RBs so the Cardinal never had any rabbits to pull out of the hat…and without the prospect of power offense you can’t recruit top linemen, which is a historic Cardinal weak spot. Top QBs they can find now and again, but OB-DBs not so much.
Sanchez may not have lightning speed, but he seems to have a knack for finding loose balls at key moments and appears to leave it on the field. I saw him play twice in 07 - Stanford topped UCLA in the one of the collegiate surprises of the year and in “The Big Game.” Anyone who looks at the BG clip can see why he perked the Raiders interest. Is he green, yeah, but he is game.
Raiders have plenty of older talent on the roster. As a prior post stated, Raiders need to gel as an old-school TEAM again and it might not hurt to have a few raw recruits who don’t give a flip about their salaries and Escalades and who are willing to leave it on the field.
For naysayers - google and pull up the San Jose/Mercury News clips - young Sancho is referenced frequently.

Was watching Ed Hartwell`s interview with Jeanette Thompson about 10 days ago on the blitz media. The guy was talking about his new business, and about his wife`s business, he`s retirement, so on and so on. Well he talked and laughed his way through the interview without ever really talking about FOOTBALL. I said wow, this guy is all ready to retire and it appears hes just collecting a check until then. Hats off to Kiffin for this cut. We still need a middle LB to stop the run, Zach thomas would of been nice.
August 14th, 2008 at 6:32 am
Batman..
yup, I had the same thoughts, I think this is good for the team, the other LB can see he is fair, the best starts, the good stays, the rest is gone..
August 14th, 2008 at 6:33 am
Jim..
“Thank GOd. oh yeah, and you’re a lot older.”
- and what is that about???
August 14th, 2008 at 6:35 am

yeah, I’ve been watching that game too, but to be fair, I don’t think anybody thought USA would lose to Greece this time.. not even greece =)
August 14th, 2008 at 6:55 am
Someone asked who Marcus Tubbs was in an earlier post. Marcus Tubbs is a DT who was just released from the Seattle Seahawks. He was a 1st rnd. pick a few years ago. Didnt quite become an elite DT but he’s solid. Basically Seattle’s so loaded with D-lineman that he just became the odd man out. He’s better than William Joseph, thats why I say we should try him out.
August 14th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Rick..
woaw, yeah, just remembered him, yeah he would be a nice acquisition..
August 14th, 2008 at 6:59 am
Rick..
didn’t know he was released.. when did this happen?
August 14th, 2008 at 7:01 am
yeah, why couldnt they release Drisan ’stone hands’ james? Hartwell may not be great, but he’s got to be better than Irons and Archuletta at LB.
i cant stress enough to get rid of Drisan and get some more playing time for our other wr’s.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:02 am
La Milicia, Do you or anybody out there HONESTLY think we will be able to stop the run this year ? If we dont were just pissing into the wind! I think the whole season will depend on that. Yes, its great that our own running game will keep opposing teams off the feild, but still its vital we stop the run. Kiffin should put some prozac in the water up there, were mentally beat up. LOL
August 14th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Tubbs had microfracture surgery in 2006 and was on injured reserve in 2007. Injury seems to folow him.

He was released a few days ago. I think he could be a steal like Derrick Burgess was when we got him from Philly.

anybody watch ESPN first take this morning? They had a segment on Bush. They had interviewed people on the niners and they all felt that M Bush was gonna be special. I can’t wait to see Kiffin line him up with McFadden at the goal line.

I hear ya bruh! Thats alot of injuries, but I think he’s servicable at least for depth. NawMean?
August 14th, 2008 at 7:56 am
Jim..
so you think we are a unison nation? so you think we all have the same beliefs.. well okay!?
300M vs 5.5 and bring up GNP as a valid argument..
What you went through the 70’s or the 90’s is peanuts compared what heads you in the next decade..
My high horse, lol, well, im just the kid who said you were all naked..
but to get you, what is it, its hard to govern 300M but its easy to have a great to have big GNP?
I don’t get your point, and I really don’t care.. I’ve trained over 1000 american soldiers they didn’t know left form right.. and I work with americans all day, and have been for several years, each of them planned to stay in denmark for max a year, but ended up here for good.. So that bad it cant, be..
I Bet the same goes the other way around, that many goes to the US, and stay their, the ones I know who did this, came home to Denmark when they got pregnant.. They wouldn’t have their kids to grow up there..
But lets hope you are right, this is just a tiny bumb on the road for you, fact is you country has never been so much in debt than they are now.. fact is that a big bunch of your taxes goes just to pay the interest on these loans..
If you were a middle-class family the bank would cease all your assets..
Thats how bad it is..

Morning Nation,
very cool, when I left this site yesterday La Milicia Negra was expressing some poignant views and others were responding in various ways. I was born here and bear witness to the flaws of this country every day. It is what it is, and from the world I have roamed to understand that all countries, cultures and societies are flawed. So be it. Humans being humans. When any nation except the Raider Nation declares “I’m #1!” it is wholeheartedly in error.

Man, now I understand Kiffin’s worries about our depth. We release Hartwell and keep Irons who’s been injured half of camp… I think Kiffin should pull a rabit out of his hat and play Jamarcus during the second half. Let Andrew Walter take the 1st half beating, he´s got some experience in that department…
August 14th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Boy oh boy this Kiffin character and I do mean character is a real piece of work. I sure hope he leads us to some wins this year. Kiffin will have very few excuses for losing and another 4 or 5 win season after all the added players and all the money spent to retain talent, Kiffin better win or he will walk the plank.
August 14th, 2008 at 9:07 am
Looks like the Hartwell Brown era is over….before it even began.
August 14th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Why cut Ed Hartwell for Adam Archulousy? Ed could’ve at least been a solid back-up. It’s not like we have LB’s that do what LB’s are supposed to do and that is stop the run. Our LB’s specialize in pass coverage. Maybe Morrison and Howard can play CB or safety.

Kiffin has so much to prove this year. To this point Kiffin has proven nothing. 4 wins and a top ten running game. Big deal. Nervous Norv won 5 games and had an actual passing game. We were young and rebuilding under Norv and we’re the same now, young and rebuilding. I expect to see a lot more out of the offense this season or Kiffin has to go.
August 14th, 2008 at 9:35 am
lmn: us aid has arrived in Georgia. Food, medicine, etc. What steps have the Danes taken as of this moment?
Kind of strange for an anti family, all thug country to send some of our supplies to someone in need, especially when we are in such need. hmmmm
again, what are the danes doing? WHat steps have they made and contacting Russia to let them know of this disgrace???
August 14th, 2008 at 9:36 am
BIG AL’s GOON,
Agree with the Hartwell assessment. Everything I heard about his training camp has been positive…wonder what happened…
On Kiffin, I will trust what I’ve heard from players such as Burgess and Grove (to name a few). They have stated that he is the best coach they’ve had since they’ve been hear…So I will wait to pass judgement (at least until mid season, LOL).
August 14th, 2008 at 9:40 am
I think they cut Hartwell because of his age and lack of special teams play. Ekijuba is the backup MLB, but is also our best special teams guy. Irons and Archeleta I doubt will be on the 53 in the end.
August 14th, 2008 at 9:47 am
I’ve been out of the loop most of the recent while. So what’s up with Sea Bass? I know he only made $1.4 M for 24 minutes of gameday work last year, is he dogging it or what?

NNNOOOOOOOO!!!!! ANYONE BUT HARTWELL BROWN!!!!
HE WUZ MY FAVORITE RAIDER OF ALL TIME!!!

HEY ya know , just like i said at the time of the
2 trades !!! thank god ‘” THE ROBRYAN ” got rid of that big bad overpaid guy FABIAN WAshington
GEEZ he already won the starting (a whole 1.4 toward the cap he is ) job with the #1 ranked defense in the nfl the RAVENS !!! he shows up in his 1st game & goes & gets 4 PASS DEF’S & 2 INTS!!! ya know ints !!! those things that we dont get enuff of !!!!
but now we have D-HALL !!! A ” SHUTDOWN CORNER” SO HE SHOULD GET AT LEAST 7 OR 8 INTS THIS YEAR AND PLU THE REAL ADAVANTAGE TO D HALL IS HE IS GETTIN HIS ” OWN ”
3RD OPINION ON DAMAGED HAND, AFTER HIS 1ST GAME WITH HIS NEW TEAM !!!!! AND HE ONLY SETS RAIDER CAP BACK
$$10 MILLION A YEAR !!!1 THANK GOD ” THE ROBRYAN ”
DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAL UPGRADE NEEDED ON THIS IS TO BRING ANOTHER ” SHUTDOWN CORNER ” OF DHALLS’ CALIBER !!REALLY I MEAN WE NOW HAVE 2 BIG CORNERS !!! NAHMADI @9MIL & DHALL @ $10MILL
JUST THINK WE COULDA BEEN STUCK WITH THAT FABIAN GUY !!
@ 1.4 MILL , AND ALL HE DOES FOR HIS NEW TEAM IS GO OUT THERE AND COME DOWN WITH 2 INTS !!!IN A QUARTER & A HALF !!! D HAL DOES QUALITY WORK CHASING DOWN GUYS LIKE HINES WARD & T OWENS !!!! ALL DAY !!!
I’LL call it now , how is dhall gonna cover guys for 7 or 8 seconds all day ?? u see we got & never will have a pass rush thanx to your ” THE ROBRYAN ” and that is why dhall will fall flat on his face this year & years to come !!!!!
sorry guys but it already looks like I AM RIGHT
again !!!!!!

August 14th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Raider4life,
If you look at the secondary/LB part of the roster, I think that Archuleta has a real chance of making the 53 because he can cover Wilson and play OLB in certain formations. I think the Hiram Eugene could also make the roster as he can cover FS and CB. I would doubt whether there is room for both Irons and Ekejiuba. Eke is better at Special Teams but, if Irons gets back to his Notre Dame best, he could be valuable as a run-stuffing cover for Morrison at MLB.
CB: N Asomugha
CB: D Hall
CB: S Routt
CB: C Johnson or J Bowie
CB/S: H Eugene
S/KR: T Branch
S: G Wilson
S: M Huff
S: J Cooper
S: A Archuleta
LB: K Morrison
LB: T Howard
LB: G Irons or I Ekejiuba
LB: R Thomas
LB: R Brown
LB: J Alston

Jim,
Check your e-mail.
I am out.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Eke and Coop I’m sure will make the roster just on special teams alone. Irons is better as a DE on pass plays cuz he can’t cover and I doubt he and Eugene will make it. If Archuleta can show signs of 3 0r 4 years ago he has a chance, but when he was with Chicago and Washington he was as bad as Lil Stui.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Jim,
Will do…I’ll go Tanya Harding on his knee.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:04 am
What are they smoking in Tennessee:
“While the Rams’ offensive line was marshmallow-like, the Raiders’ line is as nasty as a bus station sirloin. It’s a whole new game up front this week.”
I hope they are right!
August 14th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Tanya Harding is a softball pitcher for the Australian Nat’l Olympic Team. Tonya Harding is the Walla Walla trailer park ditz.
Dakota, have fun swimming in all the raw sewage flowing up the coast from Tijuana.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:09 am
bus station sirloin????? hahahahahaha wth??
i’m not laughing at the compliment just the terminology.
must be talking about the zbs where everyone is pulling???
August 14th, 2008 at 10:09 am
I think tomorrows game will really tell where we are at especially on offense. Tennessee has one of the best Dlines in the AFC so we will see just how nasty our Oline is.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:10 am
M,
Having lived 2/3 of my life in SoCal, even I know the current goes South! lol
August 14th, 2008 at 10:11 am
ExLA,
the Raider O-line may be all of that nasty…just depends on whether the Zebras allow it or not. With “Super Mario” how could the unit possibly go wrong.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:12 am
I agree that Irons is vulnerable and needs to show something soon. Although it must mean something if he is still on the roster and others, especially Hartwell, have been cut already.
It will be interesting to see what JLH makes of kick returns against the Titans - if he makes an impact, it could put pressure on Branch, especially if his injury is slow to heal. Eugene’s return to form is also going to pressure Bowie, who is showing every sign of being a real disappointment.
Sanchez remains a long-shot for the roster - much more likely to make the Pratice Squad.
What I do know is….if we struggle against the Titans and the Cards, Kiff is going to up the pressure on the Personnel Team to make some deals. We are still very low on depth at CB, OT, OG, MLB and TE.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:12 am
EX,
Maybe our line is better than we think it is…At least the league seems to think so…nice!
August 14th, 2008 at 10:13 am
ExLA,
then why are there more beach closures because of contaminated water in the SD area than anywhere on the SoCal coast than Malibu?
August 14th, 2008 at 10:13 am
If you go S. of Tijuana to Puerto Nuevo(Lobster Village), Rosarito Beach or Ensanada, that’s another deal.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Scottish—OT is a big problem. If Kwame Harris and Green can stay healthy things are fine, but Henderson has been disappointing. TE I think we are ok with Miller, Madsen and Stewart. MLB is gonna be Eke backing Morrison. I am very interested to see how they do tomorrow and can JaMarcus get the passing game going. I think we can run the ball against anyone in the league, but if the passing game is suspect everyone will look for us to run.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:18 am
ExLA,
Rosarito is now a haven for banditos who have taken to robbing surfers and beachgoers in broad daylight. I know people who have been going there yearly in the summer since the sixties but they won’t go now.

DO not compare yourself or take credit (if deserved) by the Brits, Germans, SPanish or even the French. They are adults and it’s cute that you consider Denmark as a European contributor. Now i pat you on the head and say good night.

August 14th, 2008 at 10:21 am
SP2, Fabian got those Int’s against 3rd teams scrubs. Fabian is a former lst round pick that Rex had playing in garbage time. Fabian wasn’t playing against real NFL players when he posted those Int’s. Next time you might actually want to watch the game before you mouth off.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Raider4Life,
one thing that the lack of downfield passing brings is with all of the checkdown dump passes to RBs, one of our boys is likely to get completely blown up on some swing pass into the flat as the coverage won’t have to lay back. I’d prefer that the RB run with the damn ball that he might be better able to protect himself during these pre-season contests.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Oakglenn,
you gotta admit though that it was one of SoulPatrol2’s lesser rants about Robbo.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:26 am
M; appearantly that has happened or because of they’re teammates hasn’t happened in practice. How many times have you read that scenerio from Jerry.
that has to be read and you can’t hang your rbs out to dry. coordinator or qb. it’s dangerous if a rb gets hit and fumbles as well…
August 14th, 2008 at 10:27 am
M—I agree. I have heard way too many times in practice all the check downs and swing passes are allowing the LB’s to smash the RB. Hopefully JaMarcus will start looking more like his days at LSU. Was glad to read tho that Javon Walker has changed his attitude and is completely on board with the team. Was a little worried about Dmac getting a little too much playing time last week.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:31 am
fargas is needed so dmac and bush don’t hit that rookie “wall”
August 14th, 2008 at 10:31 am
I don’t regret the trading away of Fabian Washington - he was poor financial value and remains a liability against the bigger WRs. What does disappoint me is that Bowie, Waddell and Johnson haven’t developed into reliable back-ups. Routt is okay, but there is very little depth at CB.
The key to the passing game will be getting Miller into the open. He has such good hands and usually finds a open space. If Miller is stuck on the line bailing out Harris or Green, then we leave a Safety spare to double team the WRs or mark out the RB or blitz the QB. If Harris and the RT cannot operate without TE support, we are stuck with the run.
Rumour has it that the Dolphins would trade John Beck for a 5th. I think that would be a bargain…anyone agree?
August 14th, 2008 at 10:34 am
The Hyperion water treatment plants ocean pipeline emptys into the ocean off El Segundo. When it storms, the treatment plant gets overloaded and dumps the excess out to sea. Floats South to S.D. Sh*t Happens, lol
August 14th, 2008 at 10:34 am
M, hilarious!
August 14th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Scottish—I do agree that Fabian was and will be a liability. Chris Johnson I think can step up to be a quality backup, but Bowie and Waddell both are done. I wouldn’t give a 5th rounder for Beck because we already have two young QB’s. If DC has a better attitude and was willing to help JaMarcus I would bring him back instead.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:36 am
M

Brien Baldinger from fox sports called the Raiders disfunctional again and contributes that to Al Davis. He also states he is not an fan of D.Mcfadden. He could find nothing positve to say about any Raider player, but praised at leased one play from all the other teams in our division. I hope the Raiders make him eat his words.
Raiders Be With You.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Raider4life, I agree about Bowie and Waddell. Johnson is okay but he would be ruthlessly tested by any O-Coord if he saw any game time.
I think Tui is a waste of roster space and that AW will be gone at the end of the season (UFA). We need a decent young back-up and I just believe that Beck has enough talent to do a good job for us. The 2009 QB draft class doesn’t look particularly deep, so why not get someone now? Beck has had a nightmare in Miami, but it is certainly not all down to him.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Brian Baldinger is an idiot and yet another Raider hater on TV. I don’t put any stock in what he has ever said. and he is the only one who doesn’t think Dmac will be great. Didn’t he play for Buffalo when they were losing those SB’s? Another half ass bitter former player.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Brian Baldingers brothers Rich and Gary played for the Chiefs. Thats part of the reason for the venom he spouts.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Scottish—AW can leave at the end of the season cuz he will never be anything more than a jr. Kerry Collins. Tui probably is a waste to bring back and I think I would rather have a proven back up like Pittsbugh had for Rothlesberger. I wouldn’t even mind if they brought in the “hefty lefty” JL.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:49 am
“Baldinger has a heavily mutilated right pinky finger that was injured when it became entangled in the facemask of an opposing player.” I hope it was against the Raiders! lol
August 14th, 2008 at 10:50 am
why did they release a guy who can help against the run on defense to sign a punter?? There wasn’t someone else on the roster who is a way worse player than Hartwell?
Questionable move IMO.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Baldinger is worse than an idiot….he is a long winded idiot! LOL
August 14th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Rosarito sucks!
August 14th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Baldinger was the one who said Arman Shields was going to be the steal of the draft.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Baldinger is just an old bitter ahole who is jealous of guys like Marshall Faulk and Rod Woodson who have rings. I never listen to what he has to say cuz he never makes any sense. NFL network will get rid of his as* soon anyways cuz Sapp at least is funny and has a personality.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Raider4Life,
AW is on the 53 because his Mom is a regular contributor to this site. Tui is here because he never moaned and he has a cool name. Grant Irons might be on scholarship (I saw his father at a fundraiser for Tatum a few years back and Gerald still looked like he could play), so be it.
JLo impressed the hell out of me one game against Petrino’s boys in a Kaintuck showdown. Quadruple overtime and the HeftyLefty nearly won the game singlehandedly before he ran out of gas.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:58 am
666—You mean to tell me you’re not gonna be sportin that Arman Shields jersey??? I just ordered my Chaz Schillens jersey yesterday.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:01 am
M—JLo is just like JaMarcus only completely turned inside out and around. Would be a perfect backup I think. AW holds the ball too long and has feet just like Kerry Collins, Jay Schroeder and Marc Wilson. I saw Grant’s dad too and I think he could still play
August 14th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Network hiring policies, not unlike the quasi loyalty oath practices at the Dept. of Justice, are prefaced by the query “Do you hate Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders?” Answering “yes” will get you hired provided that on a regular basis you do expound whatever haterism you have on the subject.
Just jealous I guess.

August 14th, 2008 at 11:08 am
666—It’s too bad he had to go before winning three straight divisions.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Anyone remember a OLineman called Pete McMahon? We drafted him out of Iowa in the 2005 6th round - but he had a knee injury in camp and went from IR to waivers.
Well, he just got cut by the Patriots after bouncing around a number of practice squads. He was very solid at Iowa and played alongside Robert Gallery. He has the right size - 6′8″, 330-pound and, if Brandon Rodd ain’t looking like much, I think McMahon could be worth a look. 26 year old linemen of his size and college pedigree don’t become available very often.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Hartwell has been done since Atlanta cut him. The man had too many injuries. They did right by cutting him b4 he got hurt. Vetrans like him may even fake an injury to stay on the team or to force a settlement.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:10 am

Joe Horn seems to be the primary believer that Joe Horn has still got that old Joe Horn-ness. Anyway he says he wants to whore himself for the Cowgirls or the Iggles.

Hartwell is out of gas and was injury prone the last three years, I think the big issue with Kiff is can he play special teams as a back up, probably not.
Hartwell is not the fastest guy and probably was not able to make the final roster just as a mike in our defense.
Kiff has said if you can’t play special teams, you won’t make our team, no questionable move there just good coaching.
Special teams is just as important as stopping the run, don’t look at players at their position, look at there overall skill for the team.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Scottish Raider, Cable puts a premium on speed. At that size he may be too slow for the zone blocking.

August 14th, 2008 at 11:12 am

August 14th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Joe Horn could do a job - on a one year, sensible money deal. He has the brains to help a quasi-rookie QB and probably has enough gas in the tank. The rumours are that he hasn’t bonded with Smith’s new coaching staff and wouldn’t take part in the Matt Ryan pray-in.
Especially if the aforementioned Arman Shields is heading for the IR.

Your question regarding Beck as a QB in our current system.
I have looked at his bio and past QB skills and don’t see a system fit in Oakland.
Kiffin wants his QB to move, bootleg and use rollouts, Beck is just a somewhat smaller version of AW.

Horn is Old, would take reps from our developing young guys. We need to develop our young talent and keep them. that how dynasty’s are built.

I saw Hartwell get knocked around by the Whiners 2’s and 3’s plus he couldn’t play special teams like Eke can.

Hmmm…after pondering last year’s receiving corps when a bucket of carrots would’ve performed as well, adding anybody as has been done couldn’t hurt.

If Cable thinks he can make Paul McQuistan fit the system, McMahon must have a chance. In the 2005 pre-draft reports, he was supposed to have excellent power, reasonable mobility and was actually regarded as a bit of a steal by the Raiders. Bottom-line is that the guy has the right size and a huge wingspan. He hasn’t yet been tested in a zone-blocking system, so it would be a gamble. But we have nothing to lose and he would cost next to nothing.

M
The roster is of 53 players is becoming a premium to find some players who can play in multiple positions.
I look at AA as the old utility infielder in baseball.
A guy who can play all the infield positions and possibly the outfield.
AA can be in the box or in space depending on the defense and the team and down.
he also can play special teams, kick off, return and gunner on punts or just punt team.
Hartwell is limited, by his size and speed on special teams.

I’d rather see if Watkins can become a solid NFL receiver before bringing on an old guy like Horn. What do you think the chances are that Al will be one of the few to give Mike Vick a chance once he is released? He and DHall were tight in ATL.

John Beck was great at managing a WCO style offense at BYU and he got good results without stellar talent around him, including Todd Watkins. Beck is smart, mature, looks after the football and has a good enough arm to move the chains. His arm isn’t as strong as AW but he is a better dinker and dunker.
I just think Kiff will get the best out of Beck and that he could develop into a solid back-up.

Dell—AA looked a lot like Lil Stui the last couple of years. If he looks anything like that now he has no shot at all.

I said on this blog that Hartwell was out of gas and I feel Archuleta is on fumes, even if he did come in here in shape. Joe Horn on the other hand might have a little bit of gas left in the tank. I don’t know if he would come here tho. He seems to think he’s one phone call away from playing on a Super Bowl contender.

Cool…if Hartwell is out of gas then he has nothing left. I agree special team should be a priority, but I was hoping Hartwell if anything would provide vet leadership to this young team.

Bring in Branden Moore, 116 tackles in 06. We passed on Spikes for some strange reason.
Invisible man Sam Williams, I am nobody Ricky Browm, andRobert (I can’t play) Thomas, all suck.
The Raiders need to also sign Chris (I’m Crazy, but can play) Henry. The team needs talent !
