Camp wrap ‘08: defense
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, August 14th, 2008 at 5:37 pm in Oakland Raiders, Preseason (2005), Raiders features.
Impressions gathered from viewing 24 of 26 training camp practices over the course of 21 days:
– Not long after camp opened, Lane Kiffin offered a preemptive strike, musing about the importance of the offseason program in light of the fact that his two best players weren’t even participants.
Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha walked into camp on time, signed his exclusive free agent tender and was so good he looked like a bargain at $9.7 million.
Defensive end Derrick Burgess put on eight to 10 pounds of muscle working out on his own, showing up only to the mandatory minicamp, and was essentially unblockable. Raiders tackles found themselves getting nothing but air or simply being shoved aside by one of Burgess’ perfectly sculpted arms.
Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is flopping sides with Burgess now and then, moving him from his more familiar left side to the right. The idea is to get him an a single blocker from time to time, rather than the double-team plus a chip treatment he has received so often the last two years.
The truth about training camp defense is it is can be extremely deceiving because there is no actual tackling. Tackling only happens to be the most important thing about defense.
But there was no mistaking what Asomugha brought to pass coverage and Burgess brought to the pass rush. If health is not an issue, and Asomugha’s sore foot is at least a little troubling, the Raiders have two cornerstone defensive players to help build a viable defense.
– Training camp restrictions being what they are, there is no way to know for sure if the Raiders have repaired the gaping hole in the middle of their defense which opposing runners ran through repeatedly in 2007.
They should be better, but how much better? Do they go from giving up an embarrassing 4.8 yards per carry to the 4.0 range, or could they actually do even better and be above average.
Two reasons for optimism _ Tommy Kelly’s brief but dominating appearance against the San Francisco 49ers, and the presence of Gibril Wilson at strong safety.
Kelly has a ways to go in terms of conditioning, as witnessed by his feeble yet comic attempt at taking a lap the other night after being called for offsides. Kelly was collapsing the 49ers line almost single-handedly, but to do that for four quarters he will need more stamina. Rehab from knee surgery put him behind, and Kelly needs to catch up.
The Raiders aren’t paying him all that money to be a part time player.
Wilson has been a guy who plays bigger than the 210 pounds or so he weighs, and his presence in the box will be a welcome one in a division featuring LaDainian Tomlinson, Larry Johnson and whoever is the Broncos runner of the week.
– More optimism regarding the run defense _ linebacker Thomas Howard looks a little bigger and a little meaner without sacrificing the speed and ability that makes him one of the NFL’s best pass coverage linebackers. He and Kirk Morrison are intent on shedding their reputation as pass defenders who give ground against the run.
They need to be much, much better than a year ago. The two or three series they play against a hard-nosed Tennessee running game will be a good litmus test.
– The Raiders brought a lot of pressure during training camp, which makes aggressive amateur defensive coordinators salivate with the possibility of more blitzing.
Much of the additional pressure was to prepare JaMarcus Russell for what the Raiders think he’ll see. Kiffin could have been sandbagging, but more likely he was telling it like it is the other day when he was addressing Stanford Routt’s role as a nickel back and said, “We’re not very complicated on third down, our defense. We don’t blitz very much so he doesn’t have to do very much.”
– The play of Raiders’ offensive tackles makes it a tough call, but there may be some help for Burgess in terms of a natural rush. Jay Richardson, a decent point-of-attack player as a rookie and tall enough to take away passing lanes, has had some success getting deeper into the backfield. Kalimba Edwards has practices where it looks as if he will fit nicely into the Chris Clemons role as a situational rusher.
– The resurrection of Terdell Sands to be the kind of inside force he was as a part-time player in 2006 is still far from complete. Sands conceded he went into an understandable funk last year after the death of his mother and let his weight get out of control.
He is lighter this year _ how much, no one will say _ but he has already had a knee drained and is missing practices. It’s tough to get into shape that way. Sands will probably continue to back up Gerard Warren, who through most of his career has been either impressive or invisible _ sometimes from one week to the next.
– In early practices, sixth-round pick Trevor Scott looked like he might be a wasted pick. Later, he looked like he might be a find. Line coach Keith Millard beams like a proud papa when Scott’s progress is the topic.
Yet you see Scott in person and it’s almost alarming. He physically resembles Stuart Schweigert, and in fact doesn’t look much bigger. Listed at 255, Scott, in truth, is slightly under 250. He won’t be 260 until next year at the earliest.
– When camp started, Michael Huff looked liberated to be at free safety and making the occasional play with the kind of anticipation the position requires. The plays became more infrequent as time went on.
It’s nearing make-or-break time for Huff to justify his No. 7 overall selection in 2006, and it’s a tossup as to which way it will go.
– The whole strong side linebacker issue makes for interesting reading, being that it’s a starting position and all, but the truth is the winner will be the first player off the field when its time for nickels and dimes.
That’s why the Raiders didn’t make a serious run at Takeo Spikes, who wound up in San Francisco. They’d rather pay the veteran’s minimum for an Adam Archuleta than invest another half-million or so into a player who would be an ideal strong side linebacker but spend too much time on the sidelines to justify the money.
Not saying it’s right, and in fact it probably isn’t in this case.
– DeAngelo Hall is going to catch some heat, both from opposing quarterbacks as well as the home fans. Teams are still going to avoid Asomugha, and Hall will be there for the taking. He will also occasionally make a break on the ball and make a big play, and has a knack for being in the area when balls are deflected.
If you’re expecting a shutdown corner, guess again. There are precious few of those around.
– Routt has had an excellent training camp. He could have been miffed by Hall’s acquisition but instead has appeared to elevate his performance in practice.
Now it has to carry over into games. One of Hall’s strengths is he forgets when he just got beat and it doesn’t prevent him from coming back to make a play. Routt has had a habit of letting the failures which come with the territory affect him for the rest of the game.
Routt will need to be at the top of his game, because things get extremely thin after that at cornerback.
– Bad break for Tyvon Branch, with his right thumb encased in a cast. He could still end up being a defensive contributor at some point during the season, if his goal line hit against the 49ers’ Cam Colvin is any indication.

less than 24 hours to Kick off!!!!
August 14th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
What a concept. TACKLE, the guy w/ the ball!!
August 14th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
I actually thought Routt was going to be really good. He still is, but I had him pegged to work opposite Nnamdi. Routt will be really good.
What you said is true Jerry. Shutdown corners are rarer than rare. Thats why you lock down Nnamdi. Don’t let that man go. Hall should realize at some point this season that if he just shuts down his man like Nnamdi (if Hall is capable) then he’ll still get his INTs. Except he won’t appear to look like the weak link. But thats all if the run defense shows up, teams will still be forced to pass. I am weary of Halls gambles.

I just hope Branch is what we think/hope he is at KR. If so, we’ve got it made (closer to it).
Raider Dell - if you notice I routinely speak of STs here and there just like I am doing now. If Branch and JLHs turn out to be stellar returners then we’ve got a huge advantage out there. FIELD POSITION! Makes games a lot easier.

666,
Why don’t you go over to one of the Raider Booster Club blogs? That’s where you belong

August 14th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
the defense sures sounds improved. I see Gibril having a bob sanders like affect to the run game: maybe not as big, but somewhere in that realm, Tommy Kelly was the biggest question mark followed by a pass rushing end opposite of Burgess. Both Kalimba, and kelly looked good in the first outing, and my confidence in the unit has sky rocketed. Kirk Morrison is the man, he took a lot of shots along with Thomas Howard for not being able to shed blockers, and being more finnese players, but it seems like both are better than last year and are focused on stopping the run. The d will be good, and may even be a top ten unit versus the run. I think bringing back Ryan was a blessing of sorts for this unit, and I see them stepping into their prime after developing over the past few years.

I will leave this blog the day you live up to your word and deliver some valuable insight to this blog!
August 14th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
That’s one thing I know will never happen. You cant ask a guy with a 75 IQ to post something intelligent or insightful.
KoolKell you are nothing but a bunch of hot air. I have never read a meaningful or insightful post attached to your name.

666,
This is a Newspaper Blog, I don’t think you can handle objectivity. You should try one of the Booster Club blogs

August 14th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Tomorrow will be a great test for these guys. The Titans can and will run the ball alot. They have 3 really good backs AND a QB that can run as well. Gibril will be on display so get your DVR’s ready. If Chris Johnson get’s past Wilson he’s gone, even Hall will fade next to that guy!
I REALLY hope we open up the pass offense against this team.
Go Raiders!

Thanks KoolKell and by the way I found a perfect blog for you!

August 14th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
I’d like to look at Hall’s prospects from a different angle - he was one of the few playmakers in ATL, and felt compelled to make plays, especially as a young player. As he proved himself and earned pro bowls, teams avoided him and that caused him to take unnecessary gambles to get picks and make plays. He knew he came to oakland to play straight man d. It’s not in his cocky nature to concede anything, and you can’t blame scheme if you’re getting smoked one on one. Best case scenario is that he realizes he doesn’t have to do it all (and he has made statements to that effect) and he plays within himself and the scheme, knowing he will get his share of balls thrown his way. The leadership of Nnamdi and Wilson should help. However, if he stumbles out of the block and gets picked on all the time by opposing QB’s, he’ll have no one to blame but himself in this man scheme, and since it’s not in his nature to admit failure (especially when the guy across from him is shutting his guy down), he’ll keep his mouth shut and play how Nnamndi does - perfect technique and making plays when the opportunity presents itself, even if it’s only a few times a game.

Its that simple!
August 14th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Awesome. Could have a good D this year. Worried about Strong side too.
DT’s need to step up NOW!
Heres a Broncos break down. They look thin too. especially with their tackles. Clady looked slow and confused and the other guy at RT suuuuucked!

Dareel Jackson? Keary Colbert? Please! This Royal kid looks dangerous though.

I think Cutler is way overrated and we will probably pick him off 4 times this year.
Your thoughts?

I promise you that I will no longer comment on your posts or address you anymore. I expect the same from you.

August 14th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
On Huff - FS is where he belongs (or as a cover 2 or zone CB) and he will make plays. Getting Wilson as someone else said, was a classic “two-fer”. We got rid of weak run defense SS (Huff) and got a great SS, and we got rid of a very average FS (Stu) and replaced him with a #1 pick (Huff) that can make plays on the ball in zone coverage and makes great open field tackles while charging the line (as opposed to Stu, who tackled like a punter using an 179 degree angle and the sideline. Dumping Washington and adding Hall will also help our run D on the edges, but Huff is going to be a very pleasant surprise, I promise that. Several of you commented on the 49er game where Huff flew up and stopped what would have been a big run after the catch on a slant route - I could already see the 9er WR celebrating in the endzone as soon as he made that catch - I had been conditioned to Stu tackling for the last few years - but then, you see this blur pop onto the screen and submarine the WR, stopping him cold. Then I remembered this video of Huff before the draft, and realized that’s his game and why he was a top 10 prospect and the best DB in the 05 draft.
You gotta watch this and bear in mind the play Huff made against the 49ers and all those plays Stu ran the RB or WR (if he caught them) out of bounds 20 or 30 yards down the field - those are about to stop.

Sure, If you think it will fly, go ahead
August 14th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
I hate the donkoes….I hate those F@<KS…….
I have to give it up the WR’s corp with royal is going to be decent…Thats all i can give them coz i dont like them. cutler will be better after his diabetes diagnoses. But he still has to throw into our gauntlet, while running for his life. He will go down, and go down hard.

Raider Dell rant repost Says:
August 14th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
My fellow Raider friends and all who comment.
All of us have scrutinized the Defense and Offense to the point were we are calling each other names for our various comments, and why is that, we care and want to succeed and are tired of the last five years.
I have yet to see very few comments on our special teams, our special teams have not been special the last five years, were at the bottom in most categories.
When Kiff cuts Hartwell he is looking beyond just a middle linebacker who is physical, he Kiff also needs a contributor on special teams.
We give up field position, and this puts so much pressure on our “D”.
A few pass completions by the opposing team there in the red zone, and the boo birds fly in here, we don’t blitz enough or the RR comments are he is to blame.
Let’s put the feet of Christensen to the fire, his special teams must get better.
I was at the Chicago game last year in Oak, there was the greatest punt returner in Devin Hester and also as a kick returner.
Kiffin challenged the special teams, we didn’t kick away from Hester, his total yards for the game was 9 yards on punts, that day our special teams kept us in a game we should have won, until the long bomb to Berrian.
The field position was critical, I wish we had an effort like that every week, our D would be bettter and our offense would also be better.
My apologies about the rant, we need better players on special teams, it sets up everything we do on offense and defense.
August 14th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
An other blessing in diguise. lil’ puss Stu, won’t be whiffing tackles on, punt or kick covers.(:
August 14th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Jedi nice post on Huff…gret job as usual. Now lets get in the way back machine for a minute. I noticed last year a lot of guys were saying move huff to FS get lil stu the hell out coz he was a scholarship playerw for ryan. The guys who ere saying that you guys know your ball. Huff should have been playing FS from day one. Thats the type of S#!T that could cost games, and mess up a good players head.
August 14th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
– The Raiders brought a lot of pressure during training camp, which makes aggressive amateur defensive coordinators salivate with the possibility of more blitzing.

August 14th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
If the D-line pressures the rest of the league like they did the ‘9-ers, blitzing will be a more of a luxury, and not a necessity. Those were the days.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
JR will play the whole year, unless he gets hurt. could be great….could get ugly…
August 14th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Oh no! We suck again!
Just kidding. This training camp was interesting according to Jerry’s (wonderful) daily updates, however, we all know everything changes once we go live. Jamarcus is much smarter than most people seem to think. His success is going to (unfortunately) have a LOT to do with how Walker plays. Sounds like Miller and Curry took it fairly easy the past three weeks. I also think that after Fargas plows over the Donkeys on Monday night week one, the world will understand just how dangerous we are on the ground. Honestly guys, remember Amos Zeroue? Omar Easy? Would you rather have Walker/Curry or Porter/Whitted? We have to be better that 5 wins this year. How ’bout a moment of silence for Derrick Gibson, Tyler Brayton, Stuart Schweigart and Rick Myrer…Things are looking WAY better these days…I’m in!
August 14th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Post 39 is not me its a troll, probably carl, I will or chocolate rain.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
If Walter were named the starter, it would probably be the right call…for the short-term. If we want JaMarcus to improve THIS year, he must start, even if he struggles now and then. John Elway-like potential is only that — potential. He needs experience and confidence. Confidence can only come from playing, and learning on the run (something JaMarcus might be doing a lot more than we’d hope).
August 14th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
909,
Rodney was great!
vbr8r - LOL dude…i really did laugh out loud. OH NO WE SUCK AGAIN!

August 14th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Tommy Kelly needs to be a stud in the 4th quarter. The D gave up 6 fourth quarter leads last year. Looking like a stud for five plays against the 49ers isn’t impressive. He is basically our ONLY change at DL from last year. If e can’t play a majority of snaps at a high level we will have problems.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Damn…my son won’t let me watch NFL Network. Wants to watch Bob the Builder…he usually likes when football is on, Bob the Builder is like Crack to him…stares at it with a blank look on his face!
August 14th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
As, someone posted a few days back. Russell will have his ups & downs (hopefully more of the former). As long as our line doesn’t get him killed, he’ll be fine.
The future, is now.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Thing is Kiffin doesn’t just talk about STs; he IS about STs. Many coaches only pay it lip service - even the coaches we had before which is why our STs sucked so bad. In contrast, it looks like Kiffin is intently focus on fixing it. This guy must mention STs every time he says something about a player making the squad - its even in his draft philosophy.
Chicago is so great in the return game that it alleviates their offensive woes and helps them win games or at least stay in them (as an extreme example - we don’t have a Devon Hester - but real nonetheless)
August 14th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
I seem to recall Kiffin saying something like Curry is there at #3. That shouldn’t be ignored. That means it should be Walker & Carter at #1 & #2, with Curry and Higgens fighting it out for #3.
If Curry has been supplanted from #2, that bodes very well for Walker’s and Carter’s development. If Higgens can challenge the ultimate pro Curry for time, that’s an even better omen. I’ll believe it all when I see it.
Those #’s don’t mean too much, though — it’s just as likely that Zach Miller has as many receptions as anybody on this team.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
COW= The Voice Of Reason,
Does kelly have the stamina to play that much?
We paid him a lot of money so he will need to step up. Who do we have to spell him so that he wont fatigue?
August 14th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
we’ll be fine…7-9 or 8-8 probably….with everything falling into place we could go 10-6
August 14th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
DMAQ will play WR also..
August 14th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
I believe that Walter will start game 5 ,some agree, some dont!
August 14th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
post 59 is not me it is a troll.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Looking at the schedule realistically…
could go 2-2 thru 4 games…the Bills being the game we can win, but they will be improved too.
The next 4 will be critical to our season. All 4 games are winnable…although I could see us losing to the Saints, Jets, and Ravens. (just being honest)
the next 4 are similar the the previous 4…all winnable, but could lose to the Panthers, and the Bronco’s and Chiefs are always a toss up.
The last four games we will be 2-2 at best… but realistically 1-3.
Again I predict 7-9 or 8-8
August 14th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Walter wont be an issue unless JRUSS is hurt.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
KK — Don’t go! You just take things a little harder than you should. And no, I don’t think we should be calling each other names in here. Telling people how wrong and stupid they are (especially when it’s not me) should be fair game. Lighten-up and laugh it off some!
August 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
I wish i could meet some of these posters trolls or not. This stuff is funny…
August 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Zach Miller is a BEAST. This guy is going to wreak havoc on opponents if the scheme is going to be all about checkdowns and sh*t. Curry is a tough bastard, too. Even if he is 3rd, his presence will be felt. We need a win on opening night…anyone remember the last time we won a season opener? I remember losing to PIT, NE,SD,DET…I think I just blocked out a lot of that crap. Maybe I was too drunk to remember the majority…I’m glad Brandon Marshall drove drunk and slapped his beyotch, that gives me hope for Monday Night.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
HD37,
you are stupid and wrong. Or is that wrong and stupid?
August 14th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Walter wont be starting game 5 i expect us to be aminimum 3-1.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Good point Bro, zack miller is another WR, and so is MBUSH
August 14th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
honestly…10-6 is not that far out there.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
If, young Andrew is starting by game 5, we are in deep doo-doo. And headcoach Lofton, Ryan or Hackett, will have to try to clean up the Mess.
And worst of all. “Ladies and Gentlemen, your new Headcoach of the Denver Broncos, Lane Kiffen”.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Howie — Depends on what day my wife is using using those words.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
909, bro that would be a pisser. Walter wont be starting at all. This ship is JRuss’s.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Rat face is on his way out. If they win 6 i would be amazed, talk about dysfunctional. rat face reminds me of the mob bosses, leave no witnesses. hes been whacking a lot of his own people lynch was the topper. August 14th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
COW — You can’t mean that the Raiders’ D-line performance the other night (not just Kelly’s) was not impressive. They forced the issue, from the first-stringers on down, and that is something to build on. We know the “win” wasn’t that important in the larger scheme of things, but the confidence that comes from solid play is very important. Of course, playing only a few plays or series isn’t proof they’re good. But, win or lose, that was the kind of performance we’ve been waiting and hoping to see.
August 14th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

# Riverside Raiders Fan Says:
August 14th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
For a change of pace of our posting, before tomorrows game against the Titans, here’s some “nips and bits” from Josh Dubow, the Associated Press on Gibril Wilson.
It was printed in the Riverside Press-Enterprise today.
The “hard-hitting” strong safety should make it more difficult for teams to run the ball against Oakland.
Coach Kiffin said: “Gibril really is bringing a good mentality to our defense.” “He’s extremely physical out here, and it’s good to see. It borderlines right now on the safety of our other players, but our defense needs to see that. So it’s something I don’t want him to back-off on right now.”
Wilson’s 284 solo tackles since entering the NFL in 2004 are the most of any safety during that span. He had 70 tackles and a career-high four interceptions in 13 games for the Giants last season.
The addition of Wilson at strong safety allowed the Raiders to move 2006 first-round pick Michael Huff to his more natural free safety position and cut Stuart Schweigert.
Wilson grew up in San Jose and has followed the Raiders since he was young. He was schooled on highlights of Willie Brown intercepting passes and Jack Tatum leveling unsuspecting receivers.
Wilson said: “It’s just very important to just get back to winning, to get back to the Oakland mystique, and the silver and black. I know when I was growing up, when I thought about silver and black, I thought about nasty, knock out guys on defense. That’s what we need to get back to.”
Well, hopefully about this time tomorrow we’ll be riding on high.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
I hope your right Brien. I was trying to be optimistic, yet not be too much of a homer…I was already stretching it a bit.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
And if the effort level starts to drop on defense, Mr. Wilson should begin knocking out our guys as well.
Be a leader out there, and set the tone for everyone else. That’s what Ray-Ray would do.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Hey wattup Brien?
August 14th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
I Will try Legal Zoom,thanks,bro
August 14th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
D Hall will be one of the top 4 corners in the game again this year he and Nnamdi may both go to the probowl.
I’ve been saying it and now some of you are saying it, this defense will be a much better unit than last year. Why? TALENT ……………perid
Also the passing game will be fine once their timing gets better. Jerry’s comments about Walker are somewhat short sighted, Walker is in a different situation with a rookie QB and a lot of new players. Not to make excuses but he will show you when the lights turn on. He’s a vet and knows when it counts. Kiffin will learn that about this league. Veteran guy’s who are sure of their abilities don’t go all out early in camp the gradually work their way into it. And by the time the regular season starts they are ready to go.
Walker will be fine trust me. And another thing our WR corp will look a lot better by midseason.

Drafting at #5 the Raiders take…. James Laurinaitis linebacker USC
August 14th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
JL plays for Ohio ST, Ray malie. plays for USC and quite frankly I prefer the USC MLB
August 14th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Also, I think the Raiders picking in the top 10 days are over, we’ll be in the high teens.

http://www.nfldraftdog.com/Mock_Drafts/2009_nfl_mock_draft.htm
August 14th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
picking in the teens means; 500 or better and as much as read about improvement in all facets. I just don’t think we have the talent or the depth to sustain over 16 games
August 14th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Jerry, jerry, jerry…
What did I say about NEVER mentioning Stu Schwaggert’s name AGAIN??? For ANY reason!!! Stop bringing him up…he’s not worth the efforts of your fingers to type. NO MORE STU REFERENCES!!!
August 14th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
BHP, you keep repeating we blitz alot but we (posters) are too stupid to know what we are looking at.
Jerry quoted Kiffin saying we dont blitz.
So…I guess either…
A- Kiffin is stupid and doesnt know what he is looking at.
or
B- You talk out your ass a little.
Kiffin could have been sandbagging, but more likely he was telling it like it is the other day when he was addressing Stanford Routt’s role as a nickel back and said, “We’re not very complicated on third down, our defense. We don’t blitz very much so he doesn’t have to do very much.”
Kiffin also mentions RR’s vanilla defense as not being “complicated”. Much to OakGlenns shagrin I imagine.
August 15th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Mistabrown your not even the beginning of a pimple on BHP’s ass.
This guy understand football and The Raider organization a lot better than you ever will.
“Jerry quoted Kiffin saying we dont blitz.”
“Kiffin could have been sandbagging”
Ya Think!!!!
“A- Kiffin is stupid and doesn’t know what he is looking at.
or
B- You talk out your ass a little.”
Or C Mistabrown is a slightly retarded and doesn’t take the time to read the all of the information but instead takes a small snippet of a post out of context and berates the poster about it.
August 15th, 2008 at 1:57 am
I really wish some one would step up and stand out and legitimately claim that strong side LB spot. Its been a flip flop from the first day of camp and no one has really taken over that spot and made it thiers for good. It looks like at the end Robert Thomas will win by default. YA KNOW?!
August 15th, 2008 at 3:07 am
I have a bad feeling because we still have so many holes.
1. Weak OT’s and no depth
2. Unresolved Center position (I don’t see any of the candidates being above average).
3. WR- Walker (maybe out of gas), Curry (average and not improving), Carter (a no. 3 guy at best), JLH (he’s not going to be a factor on offense)
4. DT - Maybe Kelly comes through, but Warren and Turdel are not showing that they will come through.
5. No depth at LB and no depth at TE.
6. QB is a big question mark period!
August 15th, 2008 at 3:08 am
oh yeah 7. When Burgess gets hurt who’s gonna bring the heat?
August 15th, 2008 at 4:29 am
Hey will the game be broadcast on radio, internet?

Jim CT & Dakota..
I’ve tried several times now to go back to Football, but each time I’m away there is a new attack..
Most of your points I simply don’t get, I don’t understand what you are trying to prove..
usually I respond to comments, but for the sake of the greater good, I wont.. don’t come and say something like i’m a coward, because then I will start comment on you clueless rants..
I’m not commenting on you last post for the sake of the rest of the NATION.. I found it very tedious and that you apparently never will understand my points.. thats okay with me, i’m not in trouble..
but lastly.. for the record.. Never said I don’t like americans or america.. I said your economy is in trouble bigtime, and I said and I stand by that, I don’t like the way you are teaching you kids to think about them selves..

Morning Nation,
very cool, when I left this site yesterday La Milicia Negra was expressing some poignant views and others were responding in various ways. I was born here and bear witness to the flaws of this country every day. It is what it is, and from the world I have roamed to understand that all countries, cultures and societies are flawed. So be it. Humans being humans. When any nation except the Raider Nation declares “I’m #1!” it is wholeheartedly in error.

LMN: you are a racist. By the way, after reading about your neighborhood (you call it a country), it appears the rest of Europe calls your country racist! That shocked me.
again, what did i teach my kids to think about themselves?
I believe European countries (not your neighborhood the real countries) should step up on helping other countries and we should step down. The link i showed yesterday shows us providing 27% of the worlds humanitarian finances. We were the only country in double digits! Saudi Arabia was a mere 6%. The big European countries combined less than our donations. That is a problem. I could save a lot of money if we said screw everyone as the europeans do.

Jim you freaking 1diot.. what is it you think I said about your precious country..
you are putting words in my mouth.. you are reading a bunch of stuff about Denmark, theogh a week ago you didn’t even know it existed.. you infos/sources are more than dubious..
I dont get you point, what is it you are trying to prove??
lastly.. IM A RACIST?? where the fu©k do get that from? get a grip please.. furthermore that comes from YOU??
August 15th, 2008 at 6:20 am
Jim..
I totally agree with M, he said exactly what I meant.. and his last point was my original point when this ‘lets bash Denmark’ started..
August 15th, 2008 at 6:23 am
Denmark is too irrelevant to bash. It’s cute. It is a recipient of many good policies made by big brother countries w/more responsibility. Basically, Denmark is the little sister living at home and nothing is wrong with that but i don’t think it’s comparative to a grown up w/many responsibilities.
August 15th, 2008 at 6:25 am

4. you’re a 14 yr old tv watcher.
5. you came on here talking about how great your country and that ours is a pos. but when i started researching your country.. oh my… hhahahah first of all your country is a houselhold that i can manage while i sleep.
6. Denmark raised the time to become a citizen from 3 years to 7 years specifically not to allow muslims citizenship! hahahahhahahahahahh

LMN: welcome to america. you have freedom of speech here.
August 15th, 2008 at 6:41 am
a Last thing..
you’re right Denmark isn’t the size of China, russia or USA.. (size doesn’t matter LOL)
Never said it was.. Never said it was the best either.. I let others to do that..
In fact when I have to compare Denmark to USA, I usually compare it with the Bay area.. roughly 5.5M and so-so same way of thinking…
To sum up, I said you economy is doing down, I said I fear that you in 15 years time will look like the former sovjet-states here in Europe after 1989.. and lastly I said I don’t like the way you are taught to think about your selves..
I think, even if it is a topic, not suiting most americans, I’ve been very civil, something I think those of you who replied haven’t been..

408, I hate being called Hispanic as well. I prefer “hey you” to it. It’s not an insult, but it’s not a term that we have given ourselves. It’s been mainly given to US by Americans.
No one else around the calls anyone hispanic. The definition from Wiki is very accurate:
————–
Hispanic (Spanish: hispano, hispánico; Portuguese: hispânico; Latin: Hispānus, adjective from Hispānia, the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula) is a term that historically denoted relation to the ancient Hispania (geographically coinciding with the Iberian peninsula; modern day Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar) and/or to its pre-Roman peoples.
The term is now confined to refer to the culture and people of Spain plus the Spanish-speaking countries of Hispanic America. Additionally, countries or regions with a historical legacy from Spain, including the Southwestern United States and Florida; the African nations of Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara and the Northern coastal region of Morocco; the Asia-Pacific nations of the Philippines, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands; may be considered to be a part of the Hispanosphere.
————–
The fact that Spain ruled portions of countries like Mexico, Philipines, etc are not things they want referenced in their description of their culture. This is the same reason no one calls a Philipino person Hispanic.

—”Arizona Republic’s Kent Somers believes the decision to start Kurt Warner Saturday night might be an indication that there is, in fact, a quarterback competition in Arizona. Leinart remains the nominal starter, but there is belief that Saturday’s game is a way of keeping him motivated. Warner has said all along that he’s been told the job is open to competition, while at the same time coach Ken Whisenhunt has been publicly calling it Leinart’s job. Whisenhunt may believe he has found a way to both appease Warner and motivate Leinart, but indications are that it remains Leinart’s job to lose.”—

Phelps’ daily diet, from the London Times:
• Breakfast: Three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise. Two cups of coffee. One five-egg omelette. One bowl of grits. Three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar. Three chocolate-chip pancakes.
• Lunch: One pound of pasta. Two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread, plus 1,000 calories of energy drinks.
• Dinner: One pound of pasta, an entire pizza and even more energy drinks.
Estimated calories: 12,000. Gaseous index: High. All that’s missing are the little chocolate donuts of champions.

JR will do fine. But Andrew is gonna smoke the termite backfield after lighting it up.
Andrew has been watching game film from the greatest scrambler of all time, Fran Tarkenton.
August 15th, 2008 at 9:07 am
408—As I said before I will take Kwame over BSims anytime. He has been getting better in practice and if he plays tonight JaMarcus will be okay. If not then super Mario needs to keep Vanden Bosch off JaMarcus.
August 15th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Speaking of scrambling, Vince Young is in trouble and doesnt know it yet. This Raider team is about smash mouth football. I suspect VY will leave the game earlier then expected after getting knocked the f out!!
August 15th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Sounds like everyones saying LT is trouble so get JR out early and let the crash test dummy play.
Andrew will show everyone tonight what he is made of.
First three drives = three straight touchdowns.

August 15th, 2008 at 9:15 am
AW will be playing head to head against his dad Kerry Collins. AW got his feet from him along with those cement shoes.
August 15th, 2008 at 9:15 am
M..
yup, thanks for asking, and thanks for your objectivity..

if it just were about the calories, he could eat at McD 3 times a day, but I guess that wouldn’t give much metal.. =)
August 15th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Any word on how long Fisher will play VY? Can’t wait to see AW’s dad rolling on the ground looking for his heart which has been missing for the past 13 years.
August 15th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Andrew’s mom, you sound overly optimistic about tonight’s PRE-SEASON game…what gives?
August 15th, 2008 at 9:39 am
Quag—AW’s Mom cares because this will be the only time he gets to play and to see his dad KC.
August 15th, 2008 at 9:44 am
I’m interested to watch the two fastest ex-collegian RBs perform. Ever since Blackholepriest began touting C. Johnson five months ago I’ve wanted to see him in action. And, as I did not see the Whiner game, haven’t seen McDaddy do his thing yet.
Quagmire’d,
Andrews Mom is just hoping for her son to shine his way into a larger contract (or get pummeled into smithereens so as to kick in that Llyod’s of London policy). Either way she’ll get better digs.

what do you mean by that? who is AW’s Dad? and why has his heart been missing for 13 years ?

gahahaha, good one, though I don’t think most here knows what you are talking about, if they do, thanks titanic =)

“Lloyd’s”…apologies
August 15th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Ok, I don’t think I am ever going to take the time to read the comments that follow Jerry Mac’s blogs ever again. What I just read here ran the gamut from homosexual dating sites to a debate about Denmark or something. You people need to get a grip.

666, get off your knees & quit drinking BHP’s koolaid.
FYI…Kiffin doesn’t sandbag he tells it like it is.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Gosh Favre=Picks, whatsoever shall we do without you?!?
August 15th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Mista, get off your knees & quit drinking Kiffin’s koolaid.
FYI…Kiffin doesn’t sandbag he makes EXCUSES.
Just Win Baby.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:38 am
I can’t wait for tonight. It is going to tell us a lot more about our team than the pushover 49ers did.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:39 am
I just wish that SoulPatrol2 would stop givin’ so much lovin’ to RR, then perhaps we could get a real DC.

January 19, 2003, Raiders beat the Titans to go to the Super Bowl:

Fire Kiffin?? Why? I suppose you’d rather have pizza face Norv back. That dude was a flat out liar from day one. Said he and his brother use to go to Raider games as kids. Turned out they went to Whiner games. Kiffin is the best thing to happen to this organization since Gruden. What excuses you talkin bout?
August 15th, 2008 at 10:41 am
I’m tired of this “his mother died, so he was in a funk all year” stuff as a lame excuse for The Turds poor play last year. When my mother died, whom I was very close to and loved dearly, I had a full time business to run, family to support etc. I had to suck it up and do my job 100%. For the millions Sands is getting paid “my mother died” is a lame excuse and doesn’t cut it.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:44 am
M—If the defense doesn’t step up this year RR is gone. I think getting Wilson was more crucial than DHall, but the real step up move was dumping Lil Stui the puss Schweigert.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:51 am
I am excited because we are becoming a very good team loaded with weapons and coach seems to be doing a great job forming the Raiders into a team.

ya know, sittin’ ’round havin’ beers with Robbo probably would be a decent way to spend an afternoon. But watchin’ the schemes he has brought to bear on game day has been like walkin’ ’round with a rock in your shoe that you can’t take off.
I always hope for the best anyway.
