Beat writer Steve Corkran reports DeAngelo Hall (hand) did not suit up and will replaced in the starting lineup by Stanford Routt.
Others who aren’t in uniform include CB John Bowie (knee), WR Arman Shields (knee), TE Tony Stewart (toe) and kickers Sebastian Janikowski (hamstring) and Shane Lechler (quad).

I don’t think we can really put any stock in veterans signed by the Raiders anymore. Donovin Darius, Edgerton Hartwell, Greg Wesley. I’d like to say that Archuleta can make this team but nothing is guarenteed. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I get the checkdowns and dump offs but you will never open up the running game unless you challenge them downfield. Its not like you’re showing them everything. This is football. This is basic stuff.

Our defense is messing with VY and we don’t even have all of our starters in there. I like the blitzes and the front 4 pressure. The coverage is better because of it. Stanford Routt is doing a good job in coverage.

Not a bad half in my opinion. would like the passing game to open just a bit, but not bad. Liked the play action pass, and the roll outs. Need to air it though.
The defense looked pretty good for the most part. Let a couple of decent passes get caught near the end of the 2nd qtr. Nice bend but don’t break. Good pressure on the qb.
Special teams a bit of let down. Everyone who plays football knows not to catch the ball inside the 10 yd line. Not a very bright play.

I can say this defense looks a lot feistier with consecutive blitzes that are actually getting through …even flooding the line with blitzes on one side. He’s mixing it up even more than he ever did before.
This offense is going to be great man …when they get moving its gonna be hard to stop. And Kiffin hasn’t even taken the gloves off yet.
This defense has the potential to be great NOW! Lets see if they actually do it in the regulars.

You guys don’t really see what I see.
I see an Oline that insofar is giving our Franchise time to throw.
I see that our Franchise is quick to diagnose the hot blitzes and quick to get out of the way.
I see that our Franchise has fast enough feet to get out of the way and bide time.
I see our passing game is not great but it a lot better than advertised (Jerry!). Kinks needs to be fixed. Javon and Jam needs more time together. JLHs ran the wrong way on a 3rd and long and would’ve been free to make the catch if he ran the right way - keep the chains movin. The passing game needs work but its a lot better than we are led to believe! Familiarity and time will fix that.
I see few penalties by the offense! Wow. Are these the Raiders?

The “whomever” who caught the TD pass was Lavelle Hawkins, the kid from Cal who Al passed on to select Arman Shields with the very next pick. That’s Arman Shields, of the football powerhouse Richmond Spiders, who tore up his knee and missed almost the entire 2007 season. He did play well against Vanderbilt though, before he got hurt. I also hear he is very fast; when he’s not limping around wearing a suit.

JHill - Heres the problem. If we lose Kwame Harris for the season tomorrow…who starts at LT? Mario Henderson. So all this talk about RT doesn’t mean a thing because he would be there working at the position instead. Theres a difference between playing LT vs. RT and he obviously couldn’t handle it on the right side for one reason or the other. If Kwame and Cornell both got hurt. Who plays right and who plays left? These things matter big time. It may not seem like a big deal until it actually happens.

You’re not much of a football fan if you feel nothing about a loss, pre-season or not. It always stings when you truly care. You may realize that it doesn’t truly matter but these players are the depth of this team. These coaches are makin decisions that they will ultimately make in a game just like the prevent defense we’ve seen come up for 5 years, that hasn’t worked that is currently being used in pre-season. If you see it here, expect to see it again.

Overall, the team is looking good. Kiffin has done an amazing job. Hats off to all the coaches. We looked better than Tennessee! I’m starting to believe this team can make it to the playoffs. The 1st team D looks terrific. The 1st team O looks almost unstoppable - damn good. Jam is looking like something special.
At first Kiffin played it safe, then he loosened the ropes a bit. He opened the O a bit and Tennessee couldn’t stop it. Tennessee was the 5th ranked Defense last year and we looked very respectable against them.

Sorry fellas, when the first team is in there late in a game during the regular season the defensive philosophy will again rear it’s ugly mug. I have yet to see a game won with prevent anything, but that’s what Ryan lives by. That last 3mins was a microcosm of the last 5 years, Preseason or not!!!

We went into another teams stadium and we played a real legitimate contender and our first string played them well.
VY looked confused and out of sync because of the D. A Defense that has only given up one TD in two games
We had over 200 yards rushing.
the special teams mistakes are what killed us.

Its not that we lost a in the last minute by a bunch of 4th stringers. This happens to our starters as well because of the play calling. We always go away from what works, do something completely different at the end and we pay the price. I don’t really care that we lost because its pre-season but this kind of thing has been happening in the regular season with RR as Defensive Coordinator for years. Thats the problem.

Special teams was a real problem tonight.
Besides the Higgins fumble, we also lost field position on two other drives due to a hold and a block in the back.
The first half we had our first team special team guys in there, that was real disappointing.
The field position changed the play calling by Kiff in both of those possessions.
We complain about RR, we need to find out why our special teams coach Christensen is about and what is he doing to correct these players who make those stupid mistakes.
Do you wonder why Higgins would even field that punt, was he told a million times inside the 10 to let it go, or was he told to field it and run, whose to know.
I would think he should let the ball drop to reach the endzone and start at the 20.
RR alwys gets the blame for his defense, when the field position puts our defense on their side he seems more agressive, when Tenn had better field position he seemed less agressive.

Losses in the preseason don’t bother me. Losing the way we lost bothers me, because it’s been the Raider way for the past 5 seasons, and it needs to be stopped, whether it’s the first stringers or a guy who’s going to be working at Safeway in 2 weeks.
The moment O’Neal fumbled, I turned off the game and left, solid in the knowledge that the fumble meant the Raiders would lose the game 17-16. Surprise! Look what happened.
Much as no one wants to admit it, the mental aspect of competitive sports is as important as the physical aspect. This is still a team with talent in certain areas that doesn’t know how to win. At some point, you need to develop that - no matter who is on the field.
Without it, all the talent in the world doesn’t matter. Preseason records don’t count, and don’t matter, but they should matter to an organization that can’t win 6 games in a single season precisely because of endings just like this one.
With all that said, I do believe they accounted themselves very well on the road against a solid playoff team, and that speaks volumes to their progress.
Now if they can only take the next step and learn how to close out a game…
