The Kiffin review
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, August 16th, 2008 at 4:21 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from a conference call with Raiders coach Lane Kiffin Saturday regarding the Raiders’ 17-16 loss at Tennessee:
– Javon Walker is the new Mike Williams. Williams had a good 60 pounds on the 206 pounds Walker said he currently weighs, but Kiffin is unsparing with his criticism of Walker as he was with Williams a year ago.
In Williams’ case, it had to do with a player Kiffin recruited at USC and then recommended the Raiders sign who showed up out of shape and never appeared totally into the program. He was cut after dropping a key pass against the Titans in Tennessee last Oct. 28.
Walker’s story is still playing out, but dropping a slant pass from JaMarcus Russell to open the game and doing little during his time in the game earned him another on-the-record flogging from Kiffin.
“The discouraging play was Javon dropping that slant pass on third down, our first shot at keeping a drive alive,” Kiffin said.
That statement, by the way, came in Kiffin’s’ opening remarks, before he was ever asked a question.
Later, when pressed regarding Walker, Kiffin made it clear he hasn’t been happy with either preseason game.
“There’s a couple of balls there that we would have liked him to come up with. At the end of everything, all that matters as you take everything in is how do you perform on game day,” Kiffin said. “For him not to make those plays or the first game there was a fade that we throw to him that he didn’t go up and get, that’s discouraging because he was paid an awful lot of money, paid like one of the top five receivers in the NFL. We need him to make those plays.”
Kiffin had expressed optimism regarding Walker as camp closed, citing improved practice sessions.
– Russell, meanwhile, earned nothing but praise.
Russell did virtually all his damage to the Tennessee defense on a single possession, which resulted on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Zach Miller.
In the 24 other plays in which Russell was on the field, the Raiders gained 62 yards _ and 26 of those came on a run by Darren McFadden. Not his fault, Kiffin said.
“There was nothing to point at him as far as him not doing things right,” Kiffin said. “It was either things weren’t there or a guy wasn’t making a play for him. There was nothing on his behalf. I thought he played really well when you looked at the film, with his composure, and his energy, and his excitement.
“The more he can continue to perform like he did in that one drive, where he makes the right decisions, and there are plays in there where there were guys that were deep that he could have forced it in to but he went for the 5-yard gain. The more we can do that, the more we’ll throw the ball and the more we’ll be a better team.”
– It’s not exactly a vote of confidence, but Johnnie Lee Higgins will get another shot at being the Raiders punt return and kick return specialist because there is no one else.
After Higgins’ fumbled punt inside the 5-yard line resulted in a Tennessee touchdown, Higgins went back on the field to return kickoffs (it was a bloop kick fielded by Paul McQuistan) and was sent in the game to run an end-around (one of two he had in the game).
“We were trying to work through it so he can develop a mentality of going on to the next play and not letting anything affect him,” Kiffin said.
As for other kickoff and punt return candidates . . .
“There just aren’t many options here,” Kiffin said. “Darren is an option on kickoffs. DeAngelo (Hall) has a cast on his hand so he’s not an option on punts. (Tyvon) Branch has a cast on his hand so we’re not in a very good situation in the return game right now. We’ll give Johnnie another chance next week.”
If you’re wondering where that leaves Louis Rankin, it’s somewhere other than the 53-man roster barring an injury to the big three of Justin Fargas, McFadden and Michael Bush.
Rankin got himself pulled after a 6-yard run because he ran out of bounds and stopped the clock while the Raiders were attempting to sit on a 16-14 lead.
“You’ve got to teach your guys lessons,” Kiffin said. “He came out and lost his carries, and that’s when (Adimchinobe Echemandu) went in, and he did the same thing on his second run. We lost the game with one second on the clock. As bad as it was letting them go down the field the way we did with third and longs, it goes back to how important one play is. If they stay in bounds on either of those plays like they’re coached to do, we’re not even in that situation at the end.”
– Higgins didn’t do himself any favors in the receiving game when he ran the wrong route, resulting in a misfire by Russell.
“It’s something Johnnie did a lot last year in practices and why we weren’t able to trust him to play that much in games,” Kiffin said. “Hopefully he’s going to show us over these next two games that that isn’t going to be an issue.”
– Kiffin declared it was “Ricky Brown’s job to lose” at strong side linebacker over Robert Thomas and Sam Williams. He wasn’t willing to name a starter at center between Jake Grove and John Wade, although he didn’t rule out doing it this week.
Drew Carter will get extensive time against the Arizona Cardinals to try and win the job from Ronald Curry. Carter and Russell seemed to have a nice chemistry going early on, with Carter working with the quarterback extensively in the offseason.
“This week will be the longest that they play together, they’ll play into the second half,” Kiffin said. “Hopefully we’ll get some chemistry going this week with our quarterback and receivers.”
What about all those aggressive defensive schemes that left Vince Young and Kerry Collins so rattled? Might they carry on into the regular season? Kiffin said yes, in part because of the coverage skill on the back end and because of a desire to force more turnovers.
“We’ve put a lot in this offseason and we showed some of it the other night, and we thought it was very effective against Vince and Kerry, as you look at the numbers,” Kiffin said.
– Not all the news regarding wide receivers was discouraging. Chaz Schilens, with three catches for 45 yards, made some headway in his goal to make the 53-man roster.
“He played the best of all our receivers last night, including the front line guys, and it’s good to see because he did not lay well in the first game on offense or special teams,” Kiffin said.
– The Raiders finished with nine penalties for 60 yards, with the three that most bothered Kiffin being special teams flags on Jarrod Cooper and Hiram Eugene, plus a false start on John Madsen on first-and-goal from the 8. The Raiders eventually had to settle for the field goal.
– Kiffin said the Raiders came through the game with no additional injuries of note. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, playing with a sore foot, was the first man out defensively, followed closely by Derrick Burgess.

RRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
August 16th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
The team had to make him happy, if they didnt want to go back to 2 a days in Alameda.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Kiffin’s going after Al with the Walker criticism, too. Whenever a coach starts criticizing salaries, it’s a no brainer. There’s only one person to blame, there. It wasn’t Kiffin’s idea to take an obvious head case like this, injury prone and proven to be unreliable even when healthy, and put him on the team’s top earning tier.
Kiffin obviously isn’t allowed to cut Walker, hence, Walker is what people have referred to as a “scholarship player”. So, instead, Kiffin is just going to go right after him at every turn until he starts to play like a top payed reciever.
We have a real coach for a change. I just don’t think he’ll last. Al doesn’t like real coaches.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Oh snap, Kiffin is laying the wood some fools. “Bam,” “bam,” down goes Walker, down goes Higgins.
Looking forward to see what Carter can do, we need all hands on deck at the recieving position.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
“top paid”. My bad. Point still stands.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
“You Know Who” I respecfully disagree with Kiffin going after AD there. It was clear that he did when he talked about needing to roll more talent through, but this time I think that was soley a criticism on walker.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
And cooper was retarded with his penalty. Great way to start the game jack off. All he does is talk.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Betts is runnin’ over those soft Jets.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
I’m suprised J-Mac didnt metion anything about “Super” Mario unless Kiff would have rather not had it come up. Henderson was Kiffs pick so in hindsight if he is calling out AD he has to account for his own mistakes. Q. Moses, Henderson, Bowie…
August 16th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Damn all this negativity is sicking Jerry. This team goes toe to toe with the Titans - a physical team that everyone believed we were going to get our asses handed to us - and we kicked their asses. Now I’ve got to read more of Walker sucks, JLH sucks bla, bla, bla…
Let me enjoy the 1st team victory. And please, know one write ‘lets cut Walker’. Al paid the dude a boat load of money. Do you really think he’s going to cut him before a single regular season snap? Just get over it. Enjoy the 1st team victory.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
The salary cap hit for cutting walker is probably huge and would be worse than keeping him.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
There are a million ways Kiffin could have criticized Walker without bringing up his salary. As soon as Kiffin brings up the salary, it’s a shot across the bow at the old man. Another one, at that.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Well, like I was saying in the last thread….
Luke Petitgout was cut from Tampa Bay, he´s worth a long look provided he can get back on the field soon.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
DarthPirate, agreed, money wise we pretty much have to keep Walker. My thinking is that Kiffin can’t even bench him. Al wants Walker on the field. So, Kiffin is just going to put Walker on blast whenever he doesn’t play well. This is Kiffin playing his only hand.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Best year ever!!
August 16th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Post #14: You Know Who, I have to agree with you, that would have been like benching Randy Moss when he was slacking. Al would have gone nuts.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Considering Kiffin’s outspoken criticism, unusual from a head coach in Raiderland, is there anyone here who still believes that Kiffin is the one who wanted Walker? Is there anyone here who honestly believes that Kiffin wants to play him? Is there anyone here who honestly believes Kiffin does not want to let him rot on the bench, where he belongs? Kiffin took jabs at Walker before he was even asked any questions! Open your eyes, everyone.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
I thought it was a well played game by the Raiders 1st string.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
I can’t wait for Al to FIRE this lightweight.
Just Win Baby.
August 16th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
I hope Kiffin lets the starters go into the third quarter next week. Keep rolling recievers into the game but keep javon in and force him to make a play.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Who cares if Kiffin wanted Walker or not? What does it matter?
Al makes the decisions, is that the point? Kiffin doesn’t like that Al makes the decisions? Is that the point?
Or is it just days of our lives drama time here?
August 16th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
DarthPirate, Moss was sharp when he first got here. He caught a deep one for a TD in his first pre season series. Had Moss, on the other hand:
1) Got into a violent off field incident just weeks before camp
2) Played horribly throughout the early part of camp, and horribly in his pre season games
3) Publicly considered retiring during pre season..
things may have been different.
Walker is starting off horrible out of the gate. Moss was strong from the start. So, it’s an apples to oranges comparision. Moss was a proven weapon. Walker is a long shot, only reliable for a short time in his career.
Walker belongs on the bench. Period. The money being wasted on him is Al’s problem, not Kiffin’s. Kiffin’s focused on winning.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
You Know Who, I’m agreeing with you. I’m saying that the reaction by Al, would be the same. One of his prize toys on the bench? He would fire Kiffin instantly.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
You guys need to stop over analyzing things. There wasn’t a care in the world with Walker prior to the Vegas incident, and his so called retirement pondering. The questions were about his knee, and if he could regain his burst. Not if he could catch the ball. Goodness! IMO, Walker’s only drop was the 3rd down play in the last game. Other than that, Walter over threw him on a deep route in game 1, and that jump ball was just that, a jump ball that the defender made a good play on. JR threw another one to him that was way high yesterday, and Walker got blasted. Again, I’m happy that the real issue, HIS KNEE, is turning out to not be an issue at all.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Kiff calls-out all under-performing players, regardless of who wanted them signed. For a Al hater to say Kiff is calling-out Al every time he criticizes his players is just silly.
According to a few you-know-who’s…on one hand, Kiffin isn’t allowed to coach…on the other hand, Kiff is not only allowed to coach, but he’s got the balls to call out the old man.
Typical haters — can’t even figure out what their arguments are.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Kiffin was just giving a fair assessment on the Defense and the Offense. Jerry is just being negative. Listen to Raiders.com for the conference call to see what I’m talking about. First Kiffin mentions a disappointment of the defense on two runs and in the same breathe names a disappointment of the offense with Javons miss catch. Overall, Kiffin conference was positive unlike this blog entry.
Jerry equating Javon to Williams in near the height of absurdity. I understand the analogy but they are 2 very different players. But it will get you guys going wouldn’t it? Kiffin hates Javon soo much that he has penciled him in at Starter - Go figure.
Kiffin being negative on JLH - not really from what I’ve heard. And he was speaking generally with respect to both KR/PRs and not directing it to JLH.
But let me be clear. The whole passing game needs to improve. But we are better than a lot of teams in this regard. Don’t jump off the bridge. Look into the future and feel more comfortable.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
JHill, what about his head. That seems to be the issue now.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Terrapin, I don’t care what Kiffin says about Javon. His PLAY has been disappointing. I’m not giving up on the guy yet, but I think that money could have gone to better use.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Where the money could’ve gone is a dead issue - a sunk cost in economic terms - no need to worry about it now. Thats not the topic. You said you haven’t given up on him yet - good. Just keep watching and see how it unfolds. Don’t join the ‘cut-em now crowd’.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Only to those who read and believe in the hype DP …
Did you see his burst off the line on that slant pass? Did you see how physical he was with the corner? Just dropped a hot one from JR. It happens. Did you see that he was pissed that he dropped it?
Did you see him go up after that high pass from Russell knowing he was going to get blasted? He was open too, by the way.
Did you notice Walker wide open in the back of the end zone on that pass that Carter got in the way of? The pass was not to behind Carter for the miraculous catch, it was perfectly going to a wide open Walker.
Did you notice Walker running free down the sideline on Russell’s rollout that he threw OOB? It was a good throw away by JR, bt one more second and Walker’s loose for 6.
All in what you want to look at DP.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I think our receivers will have a better game next week.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Just to add to “Kiffin´s review”:
Lane Kiffin, Pre-game:
“I think we’re going to have a big test going into Tennessee against that team….If we don’t have our stuff right and our guys aren’t right we’ll get run out of that stadium real quick.”
Lane Kiffin, Post-Game:
“This game was a test of playing a very physical team, looking at our first guys versus their first guys and the guys that are going to make our roster versus theirs, a team that has been very physical on both sides of the ball … We answered that, for the most part.”
Bottom line….we got what we wanted out of this game, the details will be fine-tuned over the next 3 weeks.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Again I say folks, keep in mind that our WR will see an incredible amount of single coverage because of our run game. It’s pretty obvious that defenses will need to acknowledge our run game, to say the least. Walker, Carter, and Curry will more often than not have a significant size advantage, and should be able to make plays against the one on one coverage. The quick slants off the 3 step drops, and the play action will be our most utilized plays.
Our WR will be able to do exactly what we need them to do.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
It was against 2nd stringers but Kiffin just sent Bush right up the Titans gut the whole 3rd Quarter & he & the Oline kept getting positive yardage. Thats was kind of impressive. (i’m not sure if this is accurate b/c Bush’s run style is just so smooth that it looks like he could run just a bit harder …but may he is?)
August 16th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
i’m out for now…had enough for today …you guys cheer up will ya’ …this train is on the right track.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
is training camp over?? do they still practice..or just play the games??
August 16th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Agreed JHill. The pass that Carter knocked down was going right to Walker and Walker was open on several other plays. Jamarcus is just a little pumped and thus the ball is sailing high, nothing new with strong armed QB’s. McFadden made a great 5 yard catch that was 2 feet over his head midway thru the 2nd.
It seems Kiffin is so afraid of turnovers that he’s not letting these guys be athletes. He has to let it go this year so that Jamarcus can learn from the mistakes. I didn’t think we brought Walker and Carter in to be POSSESSION receivers, that’s what Curry and Miller are for.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
they pratice but im not shure if jerry has access.. Also they go home to alameda no more Nappa…
August 16th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I think curry should be our number 1 receiver…did yall see the moves he made on defensive players after the catch.?..the foot work and movement was incredible, ended up gaining 5 to 6 yards on every catch
August 16th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I wouldnt compare Walker to Williams just yet. Afterall, Javon Walker has proven himself as a top reciever in the NFL. Now I dont know whats going on with him right now, but I know he needs to go find a jugs machine and learn the fundementals of catching a football. Maybe he should switch back to #84 because at the rate he’s going the number of catches he’ll have this season may be the same as his jersey #. Now Kiffin,,, I like his brutal honesty. When you’re dealing with grown men who make millions of dollars to perform, there’s not a lot room to be nice. As long as he shows the respect that a grown man is entitled to, I have no problem with him calling out names wether he’s showing praise or wether he’s criticizing a player for not living up to his expectations, because at the end of the day the goal is to just win baby. YA KNOW?!
August 16th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Kiffin is afraid of loosing his job if they manage to loose to Denver. When you are on the plus side of the turnover ratio winning follows. They don’t need Russell throwing it up for grabs.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Oh, by the way, I am fcking sick of Brett Favre!!!! I’ve always liked him and respected his game, but I’m hoping the dude goes down hard in week 1 and disappears forever!!!
OK, I feel better. Back to the Silver and Black.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
I thought he was comparing Walker to Williams as well Rick. I think Jerry’s just comparing the public flogging that the 2 have gotten from Kiffin, not their abilities.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
A couple of other observations from the game….
Sands has a 6″ inch vertical(which is 2″ higher than I thought).
Routt got screwed on that delay penalty.
Miller made an awesome 1 handed behind the back catch.
Chris Johnson can’t cover, well, anybody
I won’t be getting a JLH shirt for quite a while!
August 16th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
As far as the Defense goes, it looks like we´ll definitely see some new wrinkles:
“We’ve put a lot in this offseason and we showed some of it the other night, and we thought it was very effective against Vince and Kerry, as you look at the numbers.” Kiffin said.
“We understood the challenge…..We’re going to give teams different looks. We were a bit predictable last year. It’s going to pay dividends”. Raiders defensive end Jay Richardson said.
A couple of months ago there were a few comments here and there from guys like Stu when he was cut that suggested some new stuff was being implemented, we saw some of it yesterday and now we hear it from Kiffin and Richardson.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Does anyone know if Knapp will handle the offensive play calling this season? It seems he did so for Russell while Kiffin handled Walter. Also, what happened to DeFilipo? Jerry: maybe you can write about who will call offensive plays and why. Thanks.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
You know what I like about Kiffen, he has balz. He is not afraid to go for it on 4th and do-able. That demonstrates confidence in his team. He is not afraid to criticize Al’s pick either. He respects Al but he is not afraid of him or anyone else in the organization. I don’t think he was “shooting one over the bow”, like some blogger suggested. I think he is just trying to light a fire under Walker’s arse. The dude needs to step up and earn his money. Kiffen is forthright and openly critical of any player that is not making the grade. He is actually exercising “tough love”. By critizing people openly, he informs them that they are on the bubble and they better step up. That is fair. By picking on the highest paid wideout, he makes an example of him to ALL the players on the team. There are no ‘house Raiders’ on this team, so you better bring you’re a game or you will be looking for employment on some other field. Kiffen said Higgins is getting another chance because there is no option. Kiffen, is a leader with a purpose (win Superbowls!) and he will do whatever he thinks is best toward that end. For his age, as a coach, he is way ahead of the curve. He knows, if Al is stupid enough to let him go, there is another head coaching job offer on his voice mail within minutes.
August 16th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
LOL at Walker “proving himself” as a top receiver in the NFL. According to whom? Certainly not anyone he’s ever played for…or played against! He’s always had potential, but top NFL receiver? That’s right out of the Al Davis kool aid container. Al Davis did pay him like a top receiver, though. Why is anyone’s guess. Lane Kiffin is wondering the same thing.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Good question, Jose! I would like to know the answer to that, and if anyone can get to the bottom of that issue, it’s Jerry.
Thanks,
August 16th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
And let me say this again about last night´s final drive by the Titans, it was not a Prevent defense, at least not entirely:
a).- 3rd and 15, Tenn 33, we throw a zone blitz with the Right End dropping back to cover and the CB and the LB blitzing. Didn´t work, pass complete.
b).- 1st and 10 at Tenn 49, Archuleta blitzes from the LB spot, gets in the QB´s face and Gunheim makes the sack.
c).- On the last big play that led to the FG, the LB (Ekejiuba) blitzes from the middle vacating the zone that the Titans WR sprints through after catching the quick slant.
They still scored, so it sucked anyway, but that´s how it went down, we mixed some prevent with some blitzes.
Obviously we need to work on those situations but I´m sure the starters should execute much better than the 4th stringers.
And finally, the player worked over on a 3rd and 15 and later on a 3rd and 17 was Undrafted Free Agent Nick Sanchez, who had joined the team just 2 days ago.
It´s gonna be a lot harder to complete such a drive with Nnamdi, Hall, Routt, Huff and Gibril back there….as opposed to Sanchez, Michael Wadell and Co.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
I see your point Marley but we’ve seen the exact same drive played out against our starting defense over and over. ANY QB will pick you apart if he’s got the time, and we certainly ablige on 3rd and long. We did it in the 2nd quarter and Vince missed a wide open receiver.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Marley, we lost because two idiots in that supposed running back committee everyone’s been boasting about don’t have the first clue about clock management. Tie that in with the fact that they’ve only done anything good vs. reserves and I think it pretty much leaves us with one proven running back, one with potential, one good receiver, and a decent qb to get the ball to these very few assets. That about sums up the offense. Defensive coordinators are not fearing the Raiders this year. Not yet.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
What a bunch of cry babies and sycophants. Why don’t you just stick your tongue right down the back of Jerry’s trousers.
Seriously the coach speaks honestly and supposedly every time he opens his mouth its a shot at Al Davis.
I don’t buy it, you cant sell your headline grabbing, negative spin here and I will give you a specific example as to why you talking out of your ass.
The exact same thing has been said about Mario Henderson all camp. He is not a scholarship player. Kiffin is trying to motivate guys on the bubble. Kiffin could cut Javon Walker if he wanted to and if you don’t believe me see Randy Moss and Quentin Moses.
There is no one on scholarship here after Freddie B was let go last year it was it was then a known fact.
Pull your heads out of your asses and stop following the media like a bunch of sheep. There are trying to sell papers and us working together as a unit and having a good camp is not as interesting as controversy.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
have they cut that loser who fumbled on our last drive yet?
August 16th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
You are on drugs if you think they will cut Oren O’Neal. Pull your head out.
FYI I am You Know Who
August 16th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Keak, the outcome of the game was not the point. It was the defensive calls on the last drive.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
You tell ‘em, MR.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Lol, cutting Oren O’neal. That guy is one of the most valuable players on the team.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Damn MR, I agree with you!
I think Kiff does have a little favoritism in him and O’Neal is one of HIS guys. Same as JLH. Shoot, it took him 6 months to cut Mike Williams and he kept both Culpepper AND McCown ALL YEAR!!!! Oh My!
August 16th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Keak
Just got off the phone with a mutual friend, Earl Stephens…
August 16th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Matt Ryan came down to earth today.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Saintkaufman
I disagree, we have seen the Defense blow leads before, that´s obviously true. But this time we blew it a different way…
We didn´t blitz in those situations before. We did it last night and results were mixed, but ultimately ineffective as they did manage to kick a FG.
But again….the players who were executing those calls were the likes of Maurico Lopez, Greyson Gunheim, Ekejiuba…not to mention Archuleta and Sanchez who have been with the team for just a few days.
The starters get all the reps and they should execute much better.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
ooooo Saint you just got Marley’d!

There is no one on scholarship here after Freddie B was let go last year it was it was then a known fact.
Pull your heads out of your asses and stop following the media like a bunch of sheep. There are trying to sell papers and us working together as a unit and having a good camp is not as interesting as controversy.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
If it’s not about the outcome of the game then why are people discussing the coverage on the final drive? It doesn’t matter, right?
August 16th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
Silver N Black 666, there are a million ways Kiffin could have criticized Walker without mentioning his salary. The minute he brought up the salary, it was a shot at Al. It was also a disclaimer that Walker’s performance, and him being a lock in our lineup, is all on Al, not him. Don’t be so naive.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
I can’t say I’m overly concerned about watching Tennessee drive down the field and win the game versus a bunch of scrubs who will be telling their grandchildren they played one quarter for the Raiders back in the day. “Did you win the game grandpa???”" “Uh, mm, I don’t remember.”
August 16th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Of course, had we won, Oakglenn, you’d be telling us about how much of a success Al’s Rainbow Zone Blitz scheme is. Wouldn’t ya? Yeh, you would. Ya f**k.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Only thing that scares me about the Broncos is Jay Cutler. He has had a great preseason.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Keek. that’s what my girlfriend calls her snatch.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
I can’t say I’m overly concerned about your opinion in general, Oakglenn. Who are you, anyway? Do you work for the team? Do you get paid to come here and shill for every little thing the Raiders do?
And, do you know that your credibility is shot in here after last night? You do know that you insisted, with personal insults, that blitzing is no longer effective in the NFL? You ‘member? You do realize that last night the Raiders shut V. Young down with the blitz? You do realize you’re a moron? Let me know when you’re ready to answer, stupid armchair wannabe personnel exec. My god, your life is sad.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Why is it that these “new” posters come in and want to argue with me, Marley and 666 and yet all agree with MoRon???? Hmmmmm……..
August 16th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Oakglenn, I already know that’s what your girlfriend calls her snatch. Most of us do….
August 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Yeah, You.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Yeh, Oakglenn. Every single person who comes in here and calls you on your bulls**t is one person. Tack this on to the same cluelessness that led you to believe that the blitz no longer works in the NFL. My god the Raiders defense made you look stupid yesterday. Maybe it just hasn’t sunk in yet?
August 16th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
The facts are our 1st team outplayed the thiers and what was great was that we played better than them on both of the lines where the battle is won. We lost a preason game due to miscues and not playing smart by some young player. Overall it was a good lesson happy that it was in preason and not a regular game to lose at the last second like that, Hopefully it will never happen again. I hate finding new ways to lose. Kiffin is doing a hella job. He tells the truth, its hard to change generations of a raiders culture and a face it Al davis is a legend but LET KIFFIN DO HIS JOB, WE ARE ON OUR WAY BACK TO REPSECTABILITY IF WE DO IT RIGHT AND LET KIFFIN HANDLE THINGS.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Oakglenn, do you think we’re ever going to let this go? Your claim that the blitz doesn’t work anymore? Especially when you’re squirming and hiding the way you are? Come on. This is too fun to give up. We’ve got you running in circles, lil biiatch.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Here, here, Dubble A.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Here come the trolls, ignore the trolls.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Now Oakglenn is going to assume dubble A is MR, too. …the idiot.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Oren O’neal get cut? Put down the pipe please
August 16th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Here come the trolls. Ignore all the trolls.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I sometimes think Al demonstrates synaptic misfires. He pays way too much money for unproven players! 26 million for that bum Lamont Jordon (gone to N.E). He was worth the league minimum. Now with Walker. Let’s see: White, Johnson, Ward…. Walker? Come on Al, nobody fears Walker!
August 16th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Oakglenn, you promise you’re going to ignore us? Thank god. I’ll cherish the day. It’s just that you’re yet to. However, I’m not going to ignore you when you’re insulting numerous fans in here for merely suggesting that we should blitz more, as you have for the past 7 months, nor the fact that you were proven wrong when the Raiders put together a blitz packaged and kicked ass.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Oakglenn constantly accuses me of being MR.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Keak
He has also mentioned Kelly’s salary in the past.
Like I said he has berated Mario Henderson as well all camp. He doesn’t take shots at Al he just speaks his mind and you are so gullible that you believe what the local media tells you.
Wake up man!!
The media was wrong Jamarcus is not 300lbs, Nnamdi showed up for camp, Kiffin is still here and will be for a long time no matter what YOU want to believe.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Looks like MR is back with his troll brigade to ruin everything. Why don’t we all come back later when the trolls are gone.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Anyone watching Cutler at the moment….
9/9 120yds 1 TD…
August 16th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
SilverNBlack666, there are a million ways Kiffin could criticize Walker without bringing up his salary. Again, stop being so naive.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Aussie..
yup.. he is way better than that QB they got in SD..
August 16th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Aussie: Yeah, I am. It’s scary. He’s the one guy I worry about on monday night.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Aussie - Cutler was solid last week too.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Nah, Aussie, we have the Whiner game here. Aaron Rogers looks real good tho.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Cutler is the only one of the BIG 3 QB’s (VY, Leinhart, Cutler) I regretted us passing on for Huff. Actually didn’t pass on VY.
I think Denvers D will have trouble with us but Cutler is going to be a pain for years.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
the backs yesterday did a good job of blocking. thats a good thing.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Lol, JT O’Sullivan 3-10 30 yards. God the niners suck.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
and for the record..
I never liked Romo.. he is of course better than the likes of Grossman, but I never had high thoughts of him..
August 16th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
The nativity of people on this blog is amazing and how gullible they are makes me want to sell swamp land in Florida.
Does anyone in here really think that any second year 32 year old coach in the NFL is going to be given full control of personnel decisions.
Do you think Wade Phillips has control over personnel.
Do you think Tony Sapano has control over personnel.
Do you think that Norv Turner has control over personnel.
COME ON!!!
WAKE UP!!!
August 16th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Schaub is having a blinder as well
We’re sure going up against some handy QB’s
I wish they’d show preseason FB here in Aust…
NFL gamepass only shows regular season games
At least I dont have to worry about blackouts to watch the Raiders, get to see them regardless. Only good thing about living outside of Nth America.
Oakglenn…what did you guys do to deserve to get the whiners….LOL
August 16th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Darth, Don’t forget JT’s “completion” to Charles Woodson.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Being in the Bay Area Aussie. There are good things about it, there are bad things. The SF Giants and the Whiners are the bad.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
SilverNBlack666, why are you making a case for Al’s micro management? Is it because you’re now conceding to the fact that Kiffin certainly fired a shot across the bow at Al yesterday (again)?
August 16th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
CoW: I agree. I hope we can be effective enough to negate whatever advances he has made.
I’m happy with JRuss though. It’s unfair to compare the two at the moment, JRuss is basically a rook.

well.. I agree to somewhat, he is the best of that bunch, but I never regret not picking him. but I wasn’t happy the denver fungus got him either..
August 16th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
LMN, I REALLY wanted Vince Young after that National Championship game. Looks like we may have majorly dodged a bullet.
August 16th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
perhaps the only good news with Denver, they are struggling to run the ball
August 16th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
You trolls look for any reason you can to bash Al Davis and I beg you again for the 100th time.
Make a list of 10 owners that are available that could do a better job of running this team than Al and I will support you in his demise.
YOU CANT!!
Its simple….fire AL Davis then what?
You have no solutions you only piss and moaning like a bunch of butt hurt school girls.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Seriously, Oakglenn. You have been telling everyone here I’m MR for over a year now.
Man up and let me know what the hell you’re talking about or leave me out of it.
Just Win Baby.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Hey, Raider Rob was definitely ignoring the trolls when he claimed to have evidence that we’re all the same person, wasn’t he? Between him, Oakglenn, and SNB666, I swear…it’s a peanut gallery in here.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
take the good with the bad hey Oakglenn….at least you guys get to see the Raiders live…jealous of you all in the Bay
August 16th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

August 16th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Oakglenn..
LOL, yeah I rather have Jammy, I never liked VY, he is too much like Vick and Culpepper, two QB’s I hate..
its fine with a runningback as QB in high school and in some colleges, but in the NFL I think its really effed up..
August 16th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Aussie, let me tell ya, tape and TV don’t do some of these guys justice. Jamarcus’s throws, the footwork of Mike Bush, Dmacs quickness, even when you see it with your own eyes, you don’t believe it.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Let’s hope they keep struggling to run the ball. If they do, we may have a shot monday night.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
oakglenn is cool
August 16th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
SilverNBlack666, are you now admitting that Kiffin was certainly taking a shot at Al Davis yesterday? Is that your angle here, by changing the topic? To be frank, nobody in here was necessarily calling for Al’s head. We were merely stating that Kiffin indeed was yesterday. You said no way, at first. Now, you seem to be going on this rampage to defend Al Davis. Does this mean you are now warming up to the obvious fact that Kiffin certainly was criticizing Al Davis yesterday by bringing up Walker’s salary?
August 16th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Hey I got an Idea..
If SnB666, Oakglenn and Fire Kiffin, didn’t talk about ‘MR’ in their post towards each other, I believe we could have a talk going on here..
well its just an idea..

August 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
OMG, now the new troll is spewing MR quotes!!! LOL. What a bunch of morons.
Actually 666, there were two college guys that were given tons of control over their franchises. Nick Saban and Bob Petrino!!!!! BOTH THOSE FRANCHISES DRAFTED AHEAD OF US!!
August 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
I’m just glad I got to see JR’s first TD in Oakland when I flew in from Aust last Dec….I’ve live with that roll out for years to come and tell all my mates about it here in Aust
August 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Raider Rob, again, where is that proof that MR is Fire Kiffin? You said it was proven. Again, do you know what proof is? I’m seriously asking you, because I honestly don’t think you know. Proof, or evidence, is empirical (that means indisputable) data which determines rather something is true. The only possible way to prove that someone is posting under any certain name in here is with an IP address. So, again, let’s see it. You really are a slow one, aren’t you?
August 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Keak you cant read so like I said earlier its impossible to talk with someone who doesn’t even have enough brain power to read a post.
I simply said that the media makes these lies up about Kiffin taking stabs at Davis. He was NOT taking a stab at Davis he was merely speaking his mind. Every time Kiffin speaks his mind he gets accused of taking a shot at Davis.
If you could read you would have seen that exact sentence in my other posts

August 16th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Since a lot of people in here will not give kiffin or Al credit for any of these improvements, who should we be giving Kudos’s to for our performance in last nights game.
I have developed a list and you can all vote on which one you would prefer.
1. The Water boy for keeping our guys so hydrated during practice. Adam Sandler made us all take a close look at how important a water boy is.
2. The Loch Ness Monster. Ok some of you might want to choose Bigfoot and that’s cool.
3. The fans. People like us who know way more than Al Davis and Coach Kiffin so we voice our opinions in here on how the team should be run.
4. Those wonderful sports writers who told us Russell was fat Kiffin was on his way out and Nnamdi would be a hold out in camp. Where did they buy their crystal ball?
5. Jesus, God, Shiva, Buda, The Dahlia Lama, Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.
6. My personal favorite. Man up bloggers and admit you are wrong because Kiffin and Big Al together are doing a great job of rebuilding this team.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
SNB666, I know you want to believe in Al, and that Kiffin and him are on the same page. But you have to open your eyes, here. Kiffin could have criticized Walker in a million different ways without bringing up his salary. Tie that in with the fact that Kiffin went after Walker’s head before he was even asked a question! Read Jerry’s blog. I know you’re a true fan. I respect that. But you have to stop being so naive.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Eddie Royal is going to hunt our azz the next many years, dammit..
August 16th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Al Davis=King of the world
August 16th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Thank you Brien. Same back to you.
That better have been a cherry KK.
LMN, we don’t talk to trolls. It’s a lesson you should learn and take to heart.
Regarding Mike Vick, I saw his first game as a pro and saw him alot up close and personal. He’s really, really good. The issue with Mike is he doesn’t take the game as seriously as he should have, and more importantly, Dan reeves thought he could pull good offensive linemen in the 7th and 8th rounds, which is what Al Davis thinks he can do with defensive linemen. Vick would drop back and he would be running for his life back there. That’s not Mikes fault.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
When the Raiders win the west what will the Al haters have to do then?
August 16th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Al Davis = 4-12
August 16th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
I call my you know what Kiki. Keak for short. Now we know why.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
And if the Raiders don’t win the west, or even more than 5 games, Brien, what will you do? Oh, you’ll say everything that we’re saying today, and then insist that things will be better next year; Just like the last 5 years…
August 16th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
al Davis= reason the NFL is even alive

August 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
I notice people purposely want the Raiders to lose so they can keep blaming Al Davis……..losers who dont go to games nor even support the Raiders……..we call em 49ers
August 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Brien = clinically insane.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

August 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Oh, that’s it, Brien. We want the Raiders to lose just so we can bash Al. Listen, kid; The Raiders have been losing, for 5 years now. That’s why we’re criticizing him. The criticism came after the losing, my slow learner.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
I vote for the tooth Fairy because Jerry did an exclusive article on him earlier and I am such a sheep that I will follow.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
#144. Thank you Brien. And ever since Eddie D took his felony convictions, that team has fallen into the toilet. Connection???
August 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
I’m so glad we last just a little bit longer than the XFL
August 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
The Cowboys first D made the Broncos first O look goold. Cutler completed all but 1 pass. Looks much healthier than last year.
The game is a little misleading since Pacman and Newman didn’t play. The run looked ok with Hall and Young getting 7 carries each and young getting 28 yards and hall 24.
Marshall looks ready to play, showing that he can consistantly get open against the backups. Royal got 67 yards with 2 receptions.
Romo couldn’t get anything going today, even though Bly and Champ are not playing. It’s preseason, but their first unit is struggling. At this moment the cowboys looking pretty overrated. Super Bowl?
I figured some of you may want to hear how our rival was performing.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
get ready for those LA 49ers Al Davis haters I know it will hurt you that Al wont move away from home again
August 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
SilverNBlack 666, would these trolls you’re “not engaging” happen to include me by any chance? Because you’ve been engaging me for the past hour, sweetie.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
5 years whhhaaaaa
Try being a Lions fan.
We had 40 years of greatness then 5 bad years.
Your thin skinned and a weak person, we don’t want fair weather fans like you anyways.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
SNB666, if you’re so critical of Jerry’s reporting, why do you hang out in the comments section of his blog 20 hours a day?
August 16th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
If preseason is any indication, i wouldn’t count the Broncos games as gimmies. Our biggest advantage is definately the fact taht Marshall will be out for 3 games. By the second game, we should be better and they should be better. At full strength.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Brien, look up the definition of the word “thug”. This is the internet, and you’re threatening someone for basically engaging in the same banter you are. No, you wouldn’t be a thug if some dude got into your path and you had to defend yourself. But to go onto a blog, talk all the smack in the world, then threaten someone with violence when they give it back to you? Yes, that is “thug” behavior. You’re essentially acting as a goon for Al Davis, and not being paid a dime for it at that, KID. Talk about modern day slavery. I don’t know why Al doesn’t use you to do work around his house, either. It’s not like you’d say no. If you’re willing to go to jail for him…

I can tell you one thing. I have posted things in here that were not even as politically incorrect as that and had my posts deleted by the mods!

You gave nada but disrespect for Oakland first off by using an icon’s name then the nerve to call me KID……….no bitch you started this off. Thug hahahahahaha go look up the definition one more time. I said you can meet me if you think I’m a kid. I never said anything about fighting did I? Assuming stuff eh? Fearful?
August 16th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Wow, interesting Raider related conversation, guys. With the modems and all…
August 16th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

August 16th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Anyone know what the damage would be if we cut Walker?
August 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Fair enough, Brien. The way you worded it earlier it certainly sounded as if you were making a threat. But if you are now saying that what you only meant was for me to meet you in person to see that you’re literally not a kid, fair enough. Anyone who really wants to make a threat will come right out with it. That’s what real thugs do, anyway. But you’re not one. You’re a decent human being. And, I thank you for explaining what you meant.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
We cant cut Walter…Andrews mom would cry.
Not to mention he can sure pick cotton!!!
August 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
ive lived in the south before and remember actually picking cotton when I had to visit relatives……..lord that stunk
to insinuate Al Davis would have someone pick cotton after the things he has done for blacks and latinos is down right stupid
August 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
no i’m not a decent person by any imagination but not a thug but i have no problems with thugs………but you are such a fugging hypocrite Keak Da Sneak is a self proclaimed thug but yet you sport his name? Come on you idiot

August 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
well its time to get ready and enjoy my saturday night……..take care all and MRS take a long walk off a short bridge
August 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I never said I had a problem with thugs, either. It just depends on what they’re “thuggin’” for. I think you’d be really surprised if you’d met me in person. BTW, I know Keak, personally. He wouldn’t mind me using his name. But again, I thank you for explaining what you meant by meeting you in person. Any real man who threatens someone comes right out with it and doesn’t recant. But you’re saying that you meant no threat, and that you just wanted me to see that you’re a grow man. I’m sorry I misunderstood you.
August 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Let me break it down for you, OAKGLENN.
