Kiffin promises to air it out
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, August 21st, 2008 at 3:02 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from Thursday’s Raiders’ practice:
– The Raiders cleaned things up somewhat in preparation for what coach Lane Kiffin said would be a test of the passing game Saturday night against the Arizona Cardinals.
“I know we can run the football. That’s no secret. We were good last year, I think we’ll be better this year, with improvements up front and the addition of Darren (McFadden),” Kiffin said. “Whatever preseason stats are worth, we’re second in rushing right now.
“To come out and run the ball again, and do it this game, really isn’t important, because I’m not worried about that. I want to see how much we can do with our first unit throwing the ball so it will be a good test for us.
During one drill, with receivers running three different routes into the end zone, quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell and Andrew Walter completed 22 of 25 passes, with the only drops coming from Javon Walker (one) and Johnnie Lee Higgins (two).
There were no defenders, so the Raiders are supposed to complete a high perentage, but it beat the alternative of the previous few days.
Overall, Kiffin thought the receivers were improved over the seven-drop performance of the previous day.
“It was better. Early on it was a little bit shaky again, but not as many plays today either,” Kiffin said. “We’ll see. I’ve got a positive outlook on this week and I think they’re going to perform really well.”
Later, during team sessions, Drew Carter and Zach Miller had consecutive drops of passes from Russell, as did John Madsen. Carter had another pass clank off his hands in the back of the end zone.
There were interceptions from Kirk Morrison against Andrew Walter and two picks by Marques Tuiasosopo, one to Michael Huff on a deflection and another to Ricky Brown over the middle.
– Wide receiver Ronald Curry, who will play as the third receiver against Arizona with Carter starting, had one of his better practices, making a few nice catches during team drills and seven-on-sevens and looking quicker than he has of late.
Rookie Chaz Schilens continued to play well and seems to be gaining on Todd Watkins for what could be a battle for the final roster spot.
– As for Walker, Kiffin is hoping to see a signs of the playmaking split end the Raiders were counting on when he signed as a free agent.
“Javon hasn’t had a very good week. It’s going to be a big game for him,” Kiffin said. “It’s preseason, but it’s the most important game, the game being the third, he’ll play a lot, and hopefully we’ll get him the ball a number of times and he’ll make some plays for us.”
– Receivers weren’t the only players having trouble holding on to the ball. Nnamdi Asomugha, reverting to his hands-of-stone days his first two seasons, dropped two potential interceptions.
– Rookie safety Tyvon Branch appeared to be getting more comfortable with playing with the cast on his right hand, protecting a broken thumb _ all the way up to the point where he broke up a pass near the goal line and left the field in pain.
“Just got me for a minute, that’s all,” Branch said. “I’m getting used to it.”
– Johnnie Lee Higgins will be the primary return specialist on kickoffs and punts against the Cardinals and is still the frontrunner for the job, barring another big mistake like his lost fumble against Tennessee.
Other players who were working out returning kickoffs were Darren McFadden, Adimchinobe Echemandu, Branch and Louis Rankin.
Kiffin would prefer not to use McFadden regularly, Branch won’t be a realistic option until his cast is removed and Rankin and Echemandu, barring injury, are unlikely to make the 53-man roster.
– Among those who did not practice included cornerback John Bowie (knee), safety Hiram Eugene (hip), linebacker Grant Irons (hamstring), wide receiver Arman Shields (knee), punter Shane Lechler (quad) and place kicker Sebastian Janikowski (hamstring).
Kiffin said none of those players will face Arizona. Wide receiver Drisan James was ill and missed practice.
– Tongue firmly in cheek, Kiffin said he planned a big welcome for Matt Leinart, the quarterback who starred at USC when he was co-offensive coordinator.
“We’re going to go old school Buddy Ryan, as they call it around here, and we’ll come after him every snap and put a bounty in the locker room on him,” Kiffin said.
– Defensive backs coach Willie Brown recalled having to talk Gene Upshaw into taking the job as the Raiders union player representative.
“When I got elected to the executive board to the players association I told Gene, ‘I need you to be the player rep,’ because I saw those qualities that other people hadn’t seen. I knew right away that Gene had the leadership and qualities to be a leader on and off the football field.”
Said Raiders player rep Tony Stewart: “You’ve got to look at where the union was before Gene and where he got it to. I think he did a great job. He left a legacy.”

DEMOTE WALKER IF HE DROPS 1 PASS ON SAT
August 21st, 2008 at 3:08 pm
thanks for the update Jerry.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Go get that Leinart. Take him out.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:10 pm
What would be the financial consequences if a high paying free agent (walker) gets cut on the final cutdown?
August 21st, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I am definately considering the idea of taking the money from Walker and using it to trade for Boldin.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:11 pm
thanks for the update Jerry!
August 21st, 2008 at 3:12 pm
We should put a bounty on the QB’s head every game, not just when Kiffin is buddies with him.

Jerry, this is exactly what I’m talking about! The troll is posting as “Big E”, now. Even on a day like today he has to pull his crap. I’m sick and tired of this. This was once a fine blog, where everyone listened to me and I always got the last word. Now everyone has a voice. And I can’t stand it! I’m going to find a new blog.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:13 pm
We know we can run. Glad to see we’re going to push the passing game. Green, Harris, Russell, Walker, Carter and Grove are all keyes to watch. Block-Pass-Catch. Need all three.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:14 pm
petitioning for chaz schilenz to make the team! Carter has regressed back into the reason he was so cheap to pickup and curry is what he is
higgins shouldnt be included at WR but only ST (sadly) so we can make room and give these youngsters a CHANCE!
August 21st, 2008 at 3:14 pm
“We’re going to go old school Buddy Ryan, as they call it around here, and we’ll come after him every snap and put a bounty in the locker room on him,” Kiffin said.

I’m glad to read that Kiff plans to have JMAC throwing the ball Saturday.
It should give us some indication as to the strength or weakness of the overall offense.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Raiderman,
I’ve been wandering that too, I think it would simply negate his contract, but he would leave with the signing bonus. (11 million) I’m not sure out that though…
August 21st, 2008 at 3:16 pm
I’d like to see Schillens make the team. I like His potential. He gave a glimps against Ten.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:18 pm
volemort.. hes guaranteed (20ishk total) out of his 3 years so wed take like a 10mil hit plus the 11mil he was actually offering back….not worth giving him up until next year
August 21st, 2008 at 3:18 pm
big e, i am 6′-4″ 247lbs and a semi pro mma fighter. you have nothing on me, i will make you tap out in under 10 sec. chump.

I hope Chaz makes the 53 too, he has the most upside of any of our recievers, (including starters) It was nice to see him laying out and sacrificing his body to go get the ball against the Titans. Size+Speed+Guts makes a good reciever, he looks like he has all three.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Voldemort…#20…Agreed…Thats what I saw against the Titans.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Motel, post #17
You’re right we’ve already committed to him, he even gave us a chance to back out, now we’re in to deep to do so, let’s just keep our fingers crossed that he pulls his head out of his a$$ and plays like we all know he can…
August 21st, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Actually, it’s quite simple fellas, if the line keeps the pass-rush at bay, Jamarcus knows how 2 do all that “quarter-back $hit” to enable somebody to get open, the running game will take care of itself, if not take over entirely, end result, 10-6, if they stay away from the freakin turnovers.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
volt hes exactly what carter SHOULD have been doing for 5 years with the same body type!! i say we bite the bullet if walker doesnt hold up, and demote him to 3rd or 4th WR, keep curry at 1/2 alternating with carter unfortunately and give schilenz a chance to be a diamond in the rough
August 21st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Voidemort#22..IF He does…It’s ALL Good!
August 21st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
We would only have to take a hit on the 11m signing bonus if we cut walker. 5.5m this year and next. theres a 5m roster bonus in next year. Its considered 16m+ guaranteed because it would be highly unlikely to be cut within 2 years of such a high signing bonus..
August 21st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Prayers for the Upshaw family
August 21st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Homey…Kwame Harris…If He can Pass Protect…We’ll have a passing game.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
I knew the Raiders were gonna go after Matts grill.
This will be a great half of football for Raider fans
August 21st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
#23 russell def showed hes got the vision to be a better vince young out there when it comes to knowing what to do to win
whether he continues to grow on it well see but the guy is just UNfazed by good or bad and totally focused
August 21st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
I love what Chaz said on “Behind the Shield” he said something like” when you go up you know you’re going to get hit weather you catch it or not, so you might as well hang on.” That has always been my philosaphy as well.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:26 pm
This is preseason, let Javon get his reps. People forget he’s recovering from that stupid beatdown in Vegas and getting back in mental and physical shape. By week 2, he’ll be aright and Jerry won’t make those hater comments anymore. The real key to the Raiders success this season is the run D and they look better and I’m hoping it’s not an illusion. The Raiders reminds me of Jacksonville. I see 10-6.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Mom…Matts GREEEL…neeeds some work. Pretty Boys don’t play football.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Walker I beleive will step up. I hope he has a monster game and gets his confidence back. we need him.
Curry - Good to se him stepping up. That move he put on the titans CB was priceless.
Watkins - Needs to step up and have a good game.
JLH- Put him in front of the machine for 5000 catches
a day.
Carter - Needs to revert back to the begining of camp where he was ripping it up.
Chaz Schilens, havent heard his name associated with drops…. He was my darkhorse to make the team.
I would like to see all WR’s get a little space with the first team.
Overall we get out timing down and comfort level up between the QB and WR’s we should be fine.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:27 pm
#63 looks HUGE on some of those highlight films.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Mparty…. JR’s # is 2 not 23
August 21st, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Thec
I agree all recievers should get alittle time with the first team, we have no clear starters in my opinion, except for Curry of course, he is our best reciever…again.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Gene was Huge…especially by the standards of the ERA in which he Played.
As a Kid I also LOVED all the extra gear He wore.
Neck roll’s stacked 2 high…J Pads wrapped in tape.
Very impressive to a young football junkie.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:31 pm
its a shame what we did to marcel reece, puttin him ina position he has no chance of sticking….i say we shouldve gone to TE espcially since at fb, it means he CAN block….the dude is big an fast hed be the right guy to get behind miller
August 21st, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Why not both?
If Chazz and Watkins are outperforming everybody else, why not keep both? It’s not like Carter is Jerry Rice. He was another team’s project. It would be like Higgins going somewhere else and expecting to be a lock. Ditto Walker.
Or we can keep a 6th WR and make a cut elsewhere (like 3rd string QB).
The point is you keep young guys who aren’t just “potential” but are actually performing. Give both guys some reps with the 1st team Sat against 1st team DB’s and see how they do.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Yes RaiderLen, Harris is the weak-link, that being said, no dumb-@$$ penalties will be huge n itself, come Saturday, if RR does’nt turn the law firm loose, and it has expanded into Morrison,Howard, Hall and Wilson. These guys have the physical ability to disrupt, score, and take over the game from the defensive side of the ball. Yes blitzing is risky, but when your d-backfield is this talented, you gotta gor 4 it man.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:34 pm
IMO….If Curry is healthy…he should be a starter.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:34 pm
it was in reference to post #23 lol i know russells #….lane said we wouldnt keep 6 wrs but he did say theres the possiblity of only carryin 2 qbs and it sames likely with tui barely gettin a snap at qb last game
August 21st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Homey #41…YES…turn the D loose. Penalties…If we can manage to finish in the middle of the pack…I’d be thrilled.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Since Kiff doesn’t let Tui run pass plays in games, I don’t think it is a lock to keep him.
Besides, if you cut him he’ll likely still be around if you have to call him back.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
people are forgetting becuz harris didnt allow a sack from kearse that hes not a problem right now….the fact is kearse had about 4 hurries on russell which is why russell was on the run every pass…thank god russells the MAN
August 21st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I think the Raiders will go with 2 QB’s.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:39 pm
COW #45…Yep…and let’s face it a 3rd string QB is just a phone call away…If it gets to that the season is over anyway.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Catch the rock or we will be just like last season!
Can’t run the ball all day long! JMO…….
August 21st, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Walker, Curry Carter: Guaranteed spots
Higgins: Probably makes it unless he fumbles again vs. Arizona and the team signs someone else who can return punts/kicks. Fact that he was a fairly high pick in 2007 also helps him. Otherwise he’d be gone. Fans will go crazy if/when he screws up in reg. season.
Schilens: Ton of upside and seems to deserve a shot. May come down to his ability to compete on special teams.
Watkins: Deserves a spot but not as much upside as some others. Tough call. If they replaced Higgins with a return man who plays DB I think he makes it. Or, if he is superior to Schilens on special teams he could get in. Or, if they keep 6 WRs instead of the 5 Kiffin said they’d keep earlier in camp.
Shields: Will be put on IR and get a chance to fully recover and prove himself next year.
Every other WR: Doubtful to make it.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pm
The Bengals cut WR Marcus Maxwell. Given their talent at WR, maybe he’d be a good guy to look at.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pm
not true len….i think walter could be a tarvaris jackson in the O (bad but not awful) if our running game is locked to be as good as showcased if god forbid russell went down
August 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pm
McFadden or Bush can be our #3 QB, Tui should be gone. Then we can keep Watkins and Chaz.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:42 pm
RFFL…Miller will catch it. I belive Curry will. Jivin…(insert praying hands) I also liked what I saw of Watkins in trhe previous 2 games.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Motel…I must have missed something…I like Walter as a #2. And I believe the Raiders can win games with Him.
I was suggesting that the Raiders don’t have to keep 3 QB’s on the roster. because IF it comes to that we’re in trouble.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Taking a page fromthe Titans. Hope we fair better than they did in the pasing game.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Remember, if JR goes down it is unlikely Walter will go down in the same game. Between games you bring back Tui or Otis to back-up Walter. If JR goes down bad (IR type bad) we’d probably bring in some cut vet to back up Walter.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Schillens, Schillens, Schillens, Schillens!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Voldemort…I’d cut Tui to Keep Watkins and Chaz.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Chaz has got to be on that 53 man roster.
Can he return kicks??
August 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
I would like to see us carry 6 WR’s. I want to see watkins and Chaz make the team, IMO they have been players.
We also have our RB’s, and FB’s that in kiffins offense will be used in a pass catching capacity.
I remember I stated DMAC would play WR, and some of the “professional bloggers” in hear gave me some heat.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
cpep lol fcuk it lets grab jeff george
August 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
COW #57…Yep.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
why Kiffin doesn’t put Chaz Schilens and Todd Watkins to return punts and kick-offs in practice so he can get rid-off Johnny Lee Higgins?
August 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Thec…Agreed…If I’m the personel Guy, I can not cut productive Young players at a position of apparent need.

If T.Howard does not register doudble digit sacks this year, I will personally kick RR @$$.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
projection:3 sacks on leinart - 5 on the game
August 21st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
It’s a freakin no-brainer, the guy has the speed to turn a fumble, or interception into 6 every time he touches the ball.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Five cuts coming soon. My vote - Sheilds (to IR after Tues), Waddle (aka Toast), Bowie, Irons, James
Later 22 cuts 75 to 53 my most likely
extra kicker & punter - 2
McFoy, Rankin, Reece, Eche, Tui, Wade (tied w/Grove but Grove has more upside),plus 14 others I haven’t went thru yet.
Who are your first 5?
August 21st, 2008 at 3:56 pm
R8ER ONE… Catching punts for sure is ALOT different than catching a pass.
I don’t know what experience Chaz or Watkins have in this area.
Elussiveness and explosion are also pre-requisets.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Yo afc west foes, whaddaya gonna do when the silver and black law firm is runnin wild all over you, and the rest of the shmucks on the schedule.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:58 pm
irons, shields to iR, bowie, mcfoy, archuleta
August 21st, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Chaz S - The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder is the tallest WR on our team. At his on-campus workout, Schilens ran the 40 in 4.38 seconds and had a 43-inch vertical.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Coach on Wheels: Agree with you on the five first cuts. Five cuts coming soon. My vote - Sheilds (to IR after Tues), Waddle (aka Toast), Bowie, Irons, James
It sucks to cut any of those two WR, they seem to be doing decent so far.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:04 pm
well the fifth spot could go to James, McFoy or Archuleta…
August 21st, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I like the fact that, Kiff is challenging the 1st. team Offense, that they are going to have to step it up.
By telling everyone (Az.), that we are going to throw the rock, on Sat.
Will be interesting, to see how we do.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Archuleta, mcfoy, irons, Waddle, james
IR - Shields (this year MBUSH) Hope when he is “ready we let him do his thing.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:08 pm
COW…#70…agreed. Those seem to be the most obvious.
I like Shields to IR. I think He has game. Bowie is tough to evaluate, but if you can’t take the field…?
August 21st, 2008 at 4:10 pm
sad to say that chaz has been the most impressive wr thus far, he and watkins both deserve a shot at this roster, matter of fact they should replace walker and jlh, i don’t care if 1 is getting paid big money and the other is a draft pick, they hurt the team more than they help, while schillens and watkins will work there tails off to make the team and be regulars in the nfl for yrs. to come.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:12 pm
J. Jones’ sacbee site, has some quotes, from “old man Wille”, and others on G. Upshaw..
August 21st, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Raiderkid…Kiffin has demonstrated that PLAYERS make the roster.
He will find a way to keep both Chaz and Watkins.
And…IF they prove to be more productive than the defacto “starters” they will play.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Our young lions are hungry Watkins, and Chaz they should get to eat with the first team.
I was in LA didnt see the second hald. Chaz had 3 catches, did he have good yac or was it catch and get hit?
August 21st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Ok my more complete cut list 80 to 53 (27 cuts for the math impaired)
Sheilds (Not a cut - IR)
Boone - C
Eche - RB
Elling - K
Grey - DE
Guntheim - DE
Holland - WR
Irons - LB
James - WR
Lopez - DT
McFoy - WR
Otis - QB
Pokulak - P
Rankin - RB
Reece - RB
Rodd - G
Sanchez - CB
Strong - TE
Tui - QB
Waddle - CB
Wade - C
Wagner - TE
Wand - T
Plus 4 bubble players from DL and DB’s. Johnson, D Brown, one LB from Alston/Williams/Archuleta
of course if they sign castoffs, it all changes.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
bowie is a waste….i dont see waddle leaving Right away on account of our banged up secondary but he wont last
August 21st, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Duh! Doesn’t Kiffin know bounty placing is a fine from the league? Somebody correct me if I’m wrong?
August 21st, 2008 at 4:16 pm
our new DB sanchez has a shot to make the team but has played well and practiced and was about the only DB not starting to not get beat deep
August 21st, 2008 at 4:21 pm
I like Sanchez too - just doubt he’ll crack in.
Aso / Hall / Routt are locks
Wilson / Huff are locks Cooper because of ST
If they keep Eugene and Branch (eventual KR), getting crowded at DB.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:21 pm
and yes shield did look damn good when he was able to practice….a year to heal and hell surprise next
if we dont draft a WR in the 1st next year
August 21st, 2008 at 4:22 pm
COW…I keep Johnson and Williams. Wade, I guess, it’s all or nothing.
I’m also curious as to the T Stewart/Reece/Madsen trilogy.
Whom ever the Raiders retain here may give an indication as to the confidence they have in the O LINE.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:23 pm
#88 u keep 4 cbs though and right now it is chris johnsons job…i think if sanchez makes the 1st cut it could be for a beneficial reason
im just hoping though
August 21st, 2008 at 4:24 pm
isn’t Sanchez a safety? safety position is probably set by now and he will have a hard time to make the team.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:24 pm
We could draft a WR first in 2009 and I can’t beleive I’m even going to say it because A) It ain’t likely and B) everybody’ll start going bonkers…
Trade our 1st OR 2nd pick next year (value based on the D Hall deal) for Bouldin.
Ok I said it.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
#90 stewart is def staying becuz he can do too damn much…just think adam treu, the guy did everything for us
stewart can play TE,LG,RT,DE,DT
lane has reece stuck at fb so unfortunately hes gone
wade is expendable becuz chris morris the 3rd c is also versatile and can play both guard positions and thats vital becuz the depth sucks
August 21st, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Sanchez has been playing S but is listed as a CB. He almost certainly is gone if he is a Safety. At CB maybe he could beat Johnson…
August 21st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
COW #93 I would do that deal NOW. That is real MONey in Hand for PROVEN performance and toughness.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
sanchez is playing corner but subbed in at safety shortly becuz of ammount of injuries there as well
the more you can do the better
August 21st, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Motel #94…I don’t disagree…I’ll be interested to see how it plays out.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:31 pm
The problem with cutting Wade is that Grove is injury prone.
What if the guy goes down?
Are you comfortable with Morris manning the Center position when he isn’t even mentioned in the competition for the starting job?
August 21st, 2008 at 4:32 pm
man i REALLY hope henderson gets cut loose for some other bodies….the boy is gonna get our QBs killed if he ever had to go in
if quentin moses can get the boot, so can mario
i disagree when i see why bring in other people rejects….but its becuz u can catch a todd waktins
August 21st, 2008 at 4:32 pm
there should be a bounty out every sunday we need old school raider football back and become the most hated team in the nfl and the most feared
August 21st, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Motel,
I think you mean Wakefield - not Stewart
Stewart / Madsen is interesting but here’s the problem I see we have keeping 6 WR’s.
I’D LIKE THEM TO SO DON’T FREAK. I’m just looking at why they may not.
DMAC and Madsen. Two guys who can line up at WR and if they were listed at WR would probably be at least #4 on the depth chart.
Hard to keep 6 WR’s when you can line up two TE’s and after the D is set split Madsen out 1-on-1 with a LB.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:34 pm
#99 i think the competition is misleading, i think if grove wins then wades salary isnt worth sticking aaround for depth….personally i dont think morris is that far down as finding out which contract to hold unton at starts pay between grove n wade
August 21st, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Fanman…that’s why I miss “The Good Old Days”
No salary cap. If You had an owner that was willing to spend…You could be 3 Deep at every position.
AHHH…”The Good Old Days”
August 21st, 2008 at 4:35 pm
my mistake i knew something didnt sound right as i was writing lol
lane likes to keep 3 tes which would break up the 6wrs becuz even if we carry 2 qbs, i think the extra body would go to the oline, not WR
August 21st, 2008 at 4:36 pm
but trust me id like to see watkins and chaz both make it so id be rooting for 6 as well
August 21st, 2008 at 4:37 pm
#103 - good point man. I see what you mean. I’m ok with that then.
Also - regarding post# 100. I couldn’t agree more. Henderson almost single-handedly destroyed Walter by letting his man get that free. Cut him - he’s a bum.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Yeah. Wade is good insurance but you can’t keep 3 C’s plus a LS in Condo.
If Grove goes down, Morris finishes the game and a guy can’t be brought in if Grove is down long-term.
I hate to say it but one of the good things about having only average guys starting is if they get hurt it’s no huge dropoff.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:41 pm
#63 Will be forever remembers as one of the greatest Raiders of all times and an a most remarkable post football career!
Sad to hear the news this morning.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:41 pm
i have to mute espn while im on here becuz i cant hearing genes voice in the 24/7 tribute and im gonna cry hahaha but yeah you guys are all getting me now on the Oline
you dont need superstars in the scheme we run anyway…the only reason why it wasnt an emergency this iffseason to replace corny green on the right side even though i obv do still want someone else there
August 21st, 2008 at 4:42 pm
yeah, if Chaz has another good game tonight, then it might be dangerous to risk putting him on the practice squad. The real wild card is whether JLH can hold down the punt return position, because with Shields on IR, and with 3 TE’s it is almost certain that they will carry only 5 WR’s.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Fanman #107 after final NFL roster cuts are made It may be that Henderson gets cut if the Raiders can find a LT that is Cable approved.
In there lies the rub. Is Henderson a Cable Pick or a Kiffen pick or a Davis pick.
There may be conflicting opinions.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:42 pm
COW, I have to respectfully disagree on the state of the WR corp. While I am certainly far from happy with this group, there are solid players here, and remember, we have not played one down yet. Not one. You have your top two guys coming off significant injuries, so there is bound to be some hesitancy not to mention out and out rust.
The one guy here who I have been propping is Todd Watkins. Watkins is the proverbial guy who continues to fall between the cracks. Watkins was not recruited out of high school, even tho he had a stellar high school sports career. His teamates were Alex Smith and Reggie Bush, so all the run went to them. Todd went to JC and lit it up. He Ended up at BYU, where his junior season he just completely excelled. His senior year he faced constant triple teams and did nothing. Once again, everyone overlooked him and thought John Beck who Miami drafted was the player. I posted on this site I thought Beck was OK, but it was Watkins who could actually play. Once again, nobody picked him up. He has size and speed, but scouts thought he couldn’t catch well enough. Well, from reports Jerry Mac has posted, either he did the work or James Lofton IS a good receiver coach because he is catching everything thrown to him. This guy Watkins can play at this level.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
During one drill, with receivers running three different routes into the end zone, quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell and Andrew Walter completed 22 of 25 passes, with the only drops coming from Javon Walker (one) and Johnnie Lee Higgins (two).
There were no defenders, so the Raiders are supposed to complete a high perentage, but it beat the alternative of the previous few days.
——————
Haha, are you kidding me?!?! This is essentially a game of catch. Yeah, a few drops are expected if it’s you and me playing catch in the backyard. These guys are well-compensated pros playing the game at it’s highest level and probably performing the most basic of drills and they can’t hold on to the ball at times?!?! If you ask me they should be able to complete 100% in their sleep.
Maybe I’m being to critical. Will the season get here already!?
August 21st, 2008 at 4:45 pm
is it okay, to talk footbal now?
August 21st, 2008 at 4:45 pm
After roster cutdowns next week I think the Raiders need to target a DB who can return punts, a BIG run-stuffing DT to help out in the middle, and some O-lineman.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:45 pm
LMN…YES
August 21st, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Get that Leinert!
I hope Rankin can take away the KR return job from JLH. JLH needs to step it up this week…mostly in regards to his decision making on PR.
Schilens should be a lock to make this team! If he doesn’t them something is seriously wrong with the Old Man. WR’s should be…
Curry
Carter
Walker
Schilens
JLH (he stays because he is the only KR,PR practically)
Watkins
August 21st, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Schilens is too big and fast not to keep. Plus he has probably been the hardest worker out of the WR’s overall at least.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:48 pm
rankin wont make the team as we wont be carrying 4 rbs and 2 fbs so trying him at KR might not be a bad idea but hed be holding up somebodys shot
August 21st, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Re #116 BBB - Umm, weren’t we supposed to do that in free agency? I do agree with you, though. Just tough to imagine that happening considering all that we’ve spent this off-season and the relatively low turnover on the roster over since camp opened.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Okay then, did you guys notice the news about Quintin Moses? 40 snaps and no tackles.. Kiffin was right to dump his azz and keep Jay Richardson..
August 21st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
tackles and guards, returner DBs and a DT or 2 please
August 21st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
LMN…Part of being accountable is admitting mistakes…ego aside…Kiffin gets an A.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:53 pm
negro im not gonna give kiff ANY credit for dumping him becuz he was the idiot who DRAFTED him
poor decision, he dropped fora reason…i know the reward risk deal but he sh1t the bed on it
August 21st, 2008 at 4:53 pm
just wishing and dreamin’ NYC. For real tho, there has got to be a DB gettin cut this week, who can field a punt better than JLH.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Motel…No rabbits out of the hat for this season. Next years draft, and free agency period, will hopefully, fill the remaining holes.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:54 pm
to his credit kiffin doesnt take any blame this year as he lost his personall powers to get bodies in so not getting rid of this deadweight is squarely on Al
August 21st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Jerry wrote:
“Wide receiver Ronald Curry, who will play as the third receiver against Arizona with Curry starting, had one of his better practices, making a few nice catches during team drills and seven-on-sevens and looking quicker than he has of late.”

Did Ron’s brother join the squad? Who is the other Curry?
Come on Jerry, at least proof-read before you post.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
lol i agree but fcuk it, i can dream
August 21st, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Motel #130 lol…I dream too! I want to see the Raiders I grew up with and have followed my entire life.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Haha, I hope so BBB.. I’m not sure who though. I tend to be super-focused on the raiders and don’t pay enough attn to the rest of the league. Probably not a good idea since my fantasy draft is in a few days.. Did we ever try branch at PR or was it just KR? Sounds like his thumb should be ok by week 1..
August 21st, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Matt Leinart is will probably be on IR by Sunday!!
August 21st, 2008 at 5:00 pm
If they are gonna being passing alot against Arizona, I hope JaMarcus keeps one thing in mind:
“The Truth” will set you free(from 3rd and long).

Kiffin deserves alot of credit for cutting Moses and Fat Mike Williams.
Just like he also deserves alot of credit for ALMOST beating the Colts last year.
Just Win Baby.

javon,
looks like a bust…. what about Gabriel? is he still around? Can we afford Anquan Boldwin
August 21st, 2008 at 5:14 pm
For those of you that think that Kiffin put a bounty on Leinart, put the bong down. The statement was tongue-in-cheek.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:15 pm
what ABOUT gabriel that bum couldnt catch sh1t

August 21st, 2008 at 5:18 pm
What about David Dunn? We need a kick returner.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Read somewhere that the Raiders have $11M left to bring in other players.
Send anyone but Aso, Hall, Wilson, Huff, Russel or DMC to AZ (including the 2009 1 round draft pick) and bring in AB.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:20 pm
We dont need no stinkin Q Boldin, we need David Dunn. He is the savior.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:21 pm
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a little tired of Kiffin bashing on Javon every time he talks to the media. He made his point, Javon needs to have a good game this weekend, but sheesh, you don’t have to air out every piece of dirty laundry. It’s the pre-season for christ’s sake and Javon is a veteran. I’m just tired of all the drama. I know Javon has been unimpressive thus far, but this is one time I wish the Raiders would just keep it in house. If he plays bad, cut him, but you don’t have to throw him under the bus every other day. Again, this is pre-season. We made the decision to sign him, at least let him play a few regular season games before we give up on him.

It’s 9:20 PM on the east coast. You can’t tell me that everyone is already asleep on the west coast. I need some Raider smack. Here, i will start.
Let’s get some controversy started. With all of the talk about performance matters and no more scholarships, how come no one has brought up the fact that Walters has been outperforming Jrus consistently. Let’s shake things up. Start Walters on Saturday night and let Jrus mop up with the scrubs. Lets compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges.
August 21st, 2008 at 6:51 pm
When Jamarcus throws an INT in the Arizona game it will NOT be a sign of what’s to come, it’s going to happen because Kiffin is telling him AND the world that we’re going to throw it up there early and often to test the receivers. Don’t bug out. If by chance he drops a few bombs on the Cardinals without tossing an INT it will be awesome. We’ll have to wait and see. I’m sippin the Kool-Aid not gulping it yet, but you’ve gotta be excited for this game if you have a pulse.
p.s.-Eric Farrell thinks I’m a yuppie…I matter. Out. —By the way E.F.: I’ve been sayin’ “OUT” since before Jim Rome was gettin throttled by Jim “Chris” Everett…retard.

Hall of Fame coach John Madden:
“It was a real shock waking up this morning and hearing that Gene
had passed away. And it was such a shock because we all talk about
Raiders, and Raider family, and team being family and when something
like this happens, you realize that you really are family. Today we
lost someone in our family.
Gene was a great player. He was an All-Pro. He was a Hall of Famer. If
you look at the history of the NFL you’re going to find out that he was
one of the most influential people that the league has known. He did so much, not only for the players, but also for the owners, the teams, and the game of pro football. In that, he is obviously going to be missed.
He was respected by everyone, because as a player he was a tough guy,
and as the union head he was a tough guy. But he was also smart, and he could compromise, and he could make things happen. This is deeper than head of the union passing away, and it’s deeper than an ex-player. This is missing someone that is and was like family. It’s a tough day for all of us.”

We have gotta keep chaz for the future and watkins for monday. Johny Lee needs a his severance pay
August 21st, 2008 at 8:08 pm
666, as I wrote earlier, there is a large group of fans who believe as a Raider, you just throw on your pads, throw a silver and black charger over your pads, go line up, and win. The only reason they believe that is because of unbelievable men like Gene Upshaw.
While personally, I am very sad for myself, I rejoice in the fact that these outstanding individuals have come here before us and set an example of what it REALLY IS to be an outstanding athlete, and an even better human being.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Kearse did not match up against Harris.
I’m anxious to see Saturday’s game.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:14 pm
JLH drops one or two punts = 1<games won in regular season play… Give that guy some chicken wings.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
If JLH goes we have more receptions and better receiving core.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Harris matched up against Vanden Bosch; and from what I remember Vanden Bosch wasn’t getting much pressure to JR. Green was matched up against Kearse. Still JR had time to throw. The WR must get better. The timing must get better. But JR had enough time to get rid of it - no less than the average NFL team.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:17 pm
JLHs mistakes are a concern but the bottom line is he’s our best PRer - Period. Rankin, Eche, Johnson, et al just are not that good. Branch is being given the PRer job - and he better not disappoint.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:34 pm
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. WHY not cut Condo, the long snapper???? Are you telling me that Grove or Wade or whatever two centers we keep…can’t freaking snap the ball long. Condo’s skills, if any, on special teams, aren’t so freaking good that the special-teams will take a step backwards. The upside is we keep another
good player, one we’ll eventually need and use, but also one that we’ll keep out of the hands of Shanarat who likes to take our guys just too piss Davis off.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:36 pm
I workin’ late tonight due to Hong Kong’s typhoon - gotta luv globalization ….so I’m looking for things to read. Ran across this from Don Banks on the Raiders…
******************************
We know Al Davis loves the vertical passing game and all, but sheesh can these Raiders run the rock. Oakland is averaging 236 yards rushing through its first two preseason games, and it’s not a flukey stat based on one big game and one so-so game. The Raiders rushed 41 times for 248 yards (6.0) in a win over San Francisco, and gained 224 yards on 37 attempts (6.1) at Tennessee on Friday.
I don’t care who you play, 472 yards rushing on 78 carries is getting it done in the ground game. The Raiders have four different running back who already have 86 yards or more this month: Louis Rankin (120 yards on 14 carries), Adimchinobe Etchemandu (98 yards on eight carries), Darren McFadden (92 yards on 18 rushes), and Michael Bush (86 yards on 22 attempts).
That should help lighten the offensive burden on first-time starting quarterback Russell’s shoulders. If Oakland can run for 236 per game, I like their chances to win a couple. With that kind of surplus in the backfield, it also makes you wonder if the Raiders will be the first team called if somebody gets thin at running back.
Oakland’s running the ball so well that even LaMont Jordan (76 yards on 19 rushes) is gaining yardage — albeit in New England.
• It was so predictable, because anytime you have a three-man competition at the game’s most crucial position you’re already in trouble. But does San Francisco’s quarterback situation look like a train wreck in slow motion or what?
***************************
NOW lets see if we can pass it!!!
August 21st, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Oops…looks like I included part of his SF bib ….he basically says they’re in deep sht. Whenever you hear talk about a “QB competition” you don’t have a QB!
August 21st, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Condo apparently gets the ball there quicker than any other guy on the roster. Thats valuable for kickers and STs in general. But I’m not taking sides. Just giving some of the facts.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
You can’t cut the long snapper. That is one of the most specialized jobs in the universe. Great work if you can get it.
August 21st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I tend to think that all the bashing that kiffin does about walker is by plan, I think he is purposely doing it to motivate javon, maybe walker is the type that needs tough love to get motivated..I have not lost hope in him yet, let’s see what he does against the cards and then we can go from there, unfortunatley we wil ot cut him, because o fhis salary, but dont rule out him being demoted to the third reciever for the last preseason game, to get him motivated for the broncos..I love the fact that we do nt have to rely on the passing game, I think our run game will kick ass and our passing game will be 2nd,,However we havent seen d-mac line up as reciever yet, so I am excited to see that, hopefully kiff, will break that out this week..
August 21st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
R.I.P
August 21st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
i think airing it out is a good idea.like the coach said,we know we can run the ball.but by passing the ball not only do we get a good look at the wide outs but the o-line as well.especially harris at the lt spot.
August 21st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Jim
I hope Kiff don’t break that out until the Doinks. I’d love to see the look on the Rat’s face when DMac comes out of nowhere with a huge wn field catch.
August 21st, 2008 at 9:15 pm
*down field* that is…sorry for the typo

August 21st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
You know what I think is interesting. The fact that our D will actually get to play against good WRs. Granted that Kiffin knows Leinart, and that will help the D, they are still banged up and going against a pretty decent passing attach, that could be a wash. So it should be a pretty even battle. Good TV.
And the kicker for Sunday morning… What if, Boldin never leaves CA?….

Javon does not have the Eye of the Tiger.
Till he gets it…he’ll under perform.
I am trying to not give up on this guy.
But it’s clear to me and a lot of people that Al blew the opportunity to drop him like a bad habit when he had the chance.
That’s a lot of caish we coulda spent on some real “Want it Bad” willin to lay it on the line guys.
Tryin to stay positive, but can’t help but be concerned about our passing game.
The money these guys get, and they cant hold onto the ball?
sigh….

Marv Hubbard Rules Says:
August 21st, 2008 at 6:26 pm
It’s 9:20 PM on the east coast. You can’t tell me that everyone is already asleep on the west coast. I need some Raider smack. Here, i will start.
Let’s get some controversy started. With all of the talk about performance matters and no more scholarships, how come no one has brought up the fact that Walters has been outperforming Jrus consistently. Let’s shake things up. Start Walters on Saturday night and let Jrus mop up with the scrubs. Lets compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges.
Right on Marv…your name alone says you are from my planet!! Planet Old School!! Also..Big E rocks..>says sucks!!
August 21st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
A few days ago in a very jokingly way, I brought up a question. After watching Walter and JR play both games, if there perhaps could be a QB controversy brewing ahead? I personally would love to see JR start the season so that we can once and for all see our future in play. I am excited, and can’t wait for the season to start.
However, what to make of Walter’s play? Surely we can’t ignore it. And what if he outplays JR the next two games? Could that raise some questions?
Probably not. JR has the spot on lockdown. Unless of an injury, JR has the spot for the whole season. That is just the reality of it. And so we won’t ever get to see Walter on the field during a real game against a real D. His good play during the preseason will be ruled out as just that. Good play during the preseason….against second stringers. However, let’s not forget his play during the SF game. He did play for the longer part of the first half. I’m not sure if SF had their starters in, but if they did, it’s more points for Walter.
So then where does that leave us?
Back where we should’ve been all along, at the grocery store filling up a shopping cart with beers, steaks, sausages, burgers, some chicken, ice, and more beer, getting ready for the game this saturday whether you’re tailgating, or simply BBQing at home watching the game from the comfort of your couch, like yours truly.
Let’s leave the controversy starting to the media.
Enjoy this season fans, it’s gonna be a good one.
GO RAIDERS! I’m In like Gene! GO RAIDERS!
(No pun towards Mr. Gene Upshaw,RIP, I’m refering to being IN as a RAIDER.)

i have the #3 overall pick in my ffl. 12 teams deep. i hope to get AP or WEstbrook #1 (3), brees #2 (22) and mcfadden #3 (27). if i get scared i may take mcfadden #2 and hope for palmer #3.
thoughts?>
Zach miller will also be on my team and FYI>>>> Gibril WIlson (we have players not teams on D) is the “expected” top DB (pts) in FFL per NFL.com Obviously, Namdi can’t get pts because no one throws his way.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Post #182… I love that face. Can’t get enough of it. I think the next phase is his head exploding, and maybe we’ll get lucky and see it happen on Monday night.
It might add 5 years to Al’s life, if the laughter doesn’t kill him outright.

11680… I don’t think AW has a snowball’s chance, but again I don’t see him as having the kind of preseason that folks seem to think he’s having. Maybe someone else can weigh in on this, but he doesn’t look to putting the ball where it needs to be on a regular basis. His completion % may be pretty good (I don’t even know what it is, to be honest), but he doesn’t seem to be giving his receivers a chance to do anything once they catch the ball.
Does anyone else see that?

AW does not look fast enough — and reads are slow — he will always be a backup.–by the time the receiver catches the ball the db is on him to knock it down or make a tackle.–

The great Raider Gene Upshaw has left us, but his legacy will live forever.
The NFLPA should petition the league to put a #63 sticker on every helmet in the league this year. Few people in sport deserve the kind of salute Eugene Upshaw does.
Raider On, Gene, Raider On.

Rocklin — I respectfully disagree with you on Walter. He would cause a QB controversy on more than half the teams in the league this year, and win the job outright on a number of them. Much like the great Raider Jim Plunkett, Andrew can’t help the way he looks when utilizing his mobility…it’s there, it just doesn’t look like much. But, Andrew’s fundamentals are sound, and his football IQ is high.
As for supplanting JaMarcus — if JaMarcus wasn’t our QB of the future, we’d have our own QB controversy. Since he is, though, Andrew will just have to continue to bite the bullet…and showcase his talents for the future.
Do I think AW should start over JaMarcus? Absolutely not a chance. The surface of JaMarcus’s skills have only just been scratched, and he may just end up being one of the greatest ever to lace ‘em up.

HayesDaze#37, Dude you are simply one of the most astute Raider fans in here. Your insights are always on point.
I see a lot of me in you, like they say great minds often think alike. Getdown now!!

hey Post 197
don’t wait to long for Zach…I did and lost him.
Word is out on him…for the insiders.
I’ve gotten McSkinny in the 4th round of my 12 teamers.
good luck

BHP — I thank you for the kind words, and tip my black hat right back at ya.
August 21st, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Steely — Just wondering…does that league you’re in draft TE’s separately, or lumped in with the WR’s?
August 21st, 2008 at 11:31 pm
AW is shaking off the rust and beating he took same as Jim Plunkett did but he is accurate and makes great reads. It’s a matter getting his clock to shorten he still tends to hold the ball. But he is better than most starters in this league. Kiffin hurt us by not taking him seriously last year he should’ve been a factor in the QB derby. Another mistake by the young coach because Walter was better than McCown and Culpepper. He should have had the chance to prove it.

does anyone know if the game is going to be televised?
August 21st, 2008 at 11:37 pm
it may have been said…but my take?
Kids Makin way to much money to sit. Period.
I agree…Walter looks poised and ready.
Money rules but you knew that. Deep down.
Hey…if sumthin bad happens…Walter will get his shot.
Let’s hope it does not come to that….just sayin.

So, who did you end up with at TE then?
August 21st, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Post #204 I feel the same way!!!
August 21st, 2008 at 11:42 pm
This was a special case sorta league. 22 rounds.
and you don’t set yer roster.
They just take yer best player at the ususal postions.
each week.
I waited a little to long cuz of the whole “wait on the TE thing”..
ended up with
McMichael ( 16th round ) and LJ Smith ( 22nd )
I think that Zach got nabbed in the 9th…but keep in mind in most leagues he’ll be there late.

BHP and HayesDaze… Agree that AW has improved. His mobility, especially; obviously he’s worked on that. I was critical of his tendency to hang on to the ball too long as well, but he also seems to have improved in that area. The thing I noticed this preseason is that, while completing passes, his placement doesn’t allow for anything to happen after the catch. It’s like he’s accurate, but not where you’d ideally like the ball to be thrown for anything to happen after the ball reaches its target.
Maybe it sounds like I’m nitpicking (well, maybe I am). I think AW is probably better than anything a lot of teams have (Chicago, Minnesota, SF, Miami, Baltimore to name a few) but I wouldn’t start him now because JR is, well, JR and he is, as BHP points out, something very special.

Steely… you might want to reconsider Jason Elam. He kicks for the Falcons now. Yikes.
August 21st, 2008 at 11:52 pm
yeah…but they stall a lot and half their games r indoors
August 21st, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Yeah, true. If he can kick at Mile High or whatever it’s called now he ought to be pretty accurate indoors. Might not get the long ones he got in DonkeyTown, though. Lack of altitude and all…
Anyway, good luck.
August 21st, 2008 at 11:56 pm
