O’Neal, Carter out for the season

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 at 9:39 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said in his post game press briefing that Oren O’Neal and Drew Carter had sustained knee injuries that will likely keep them out for the entire regular season.

More to come . . .

  2. RaiderLen Says:

    crap

  3. RaiderLen Says:

    2 down for the count

  4. tonio Says:

I agree Shawn…but …we gotta get him on the field

  5. raider11680 Says:

Ok, go and get Boldin now. Obviously our Passing needs help now, more than ever before.
Walker did ok. But we still need to see him be consistent. So let’s see what happens next week.
Too bad about Carter, I really thought he was going to be good this year.
We might also be in need of a FB now…

All I have left to say is, it’s a good think we have a running game.

  6. Shawnraiders81 Says:

Mr is in here talking up the Whiners, 1 we beat them 3 weeks ago, 2 the last time they played a SB game 1993.

Give me a break, at least pretend to be a colts fan so we would at least have nothing to say back to you……

  7. Mario Barrio Says:

    That sucks.

    Don’t let Boldin leave Oakland!

  8. Sam Adams Moobs Says:

Damn!! Like we weren’t thin enough at WR as it was. Who the hello becomes the #3 now? Is it wide open for Chaz to take if he can step up and grab it, or are you really forced into a trade now?

  9. Ghost to the post Says:

O’neal did not look like he’d be out for the year… hold up.

  10. RIP Dan Birdwell Says:

    These two hurt.

Makes the coming cutdowns more important than if both guys were healthy.

All of a sudden Marcel Reese has a shot to make the team.

What a hell of a way to head into the final game of exhibition.

  11. Shawnraiders81 Says:

Tonio, Bush is not a pounder like Kiffin wants he is not in the mold of a FB at all, asking him to do so know will just hurt our team more.

Better to keep him where he is good at and let Justin Griffith play his spot….

pregame & postgame fix! Poppa and Flores r the best fix around as far as listening to Kool-Aid

  13. MRl Says:

You guys were so pathetic tonight in the beer line. What a bunch of LOSERS. I spit in almost all of your beers. But sadly most of you were so upset, you failed to notice my MR lungee’s. Nights like this make me really love my job.

  14. Jhill Says:

I dunno about Bush at FB …

I do agree with him and McFadden being on the field at the same time, but I can’t see him in there as a traditional FB in the I.

  15. raider11680 Says:

Maybe we can give a second and third for Boldin?…

  16. Shawnraiders81 Says:

my prediction, Watkins plays #3 WR and will make a good slot WR.

  17. Jhill Says:

    Thanks 408!

  18. Shawnraiders81 Says:

MR has to drink alot to watch the Whiners play :-)

  19. Jhill Says:

We can’t afford Boldin folks …

    C’mon now!

  20. tonio Says:

cant disagree shawn… I just want something positive to look too… Bush is as you say… a half back.. big as he is… that’s what he is… Reese just got his opening

  21. coach Says:

    hahahahaha. go niners.

  22. Kirk Says:

We have plenty of receivers, we just need some blocking up front.

  23. tonio Says:

408 …Papa Flores… is the only way to go,,,, Not only are they pouring the Kool~aid.. they’re drinking it with us! They honesty is pure… nectar

  24. 408RAIDER Says:

de nada jhill enjoy I even listen to them on a head set @ the games!!!

    MR STFU tard

  25. Shawnraiders81 Says:

    Tonio….. look at the facts.

    1) Kiffin TOLD AZ that we where going to throw the football, thats like them knowing what we are doing but still doing it anyay and we did good.

    2) We have 3 great RB’s and a very good FB in Justin Griffith and a much better pass catching fb than Oneal.

    3) we have some young talent at the WR spot, Watkins will be big.

    4) our first team D looks good still need to blitz more and stop the run.

    We are on the Verge…………

  26. Jhill Says:

If you want to ponder WR options, please don’t get us ANOTHER possession reciever. Can we get a guy who can stretch the field a bit?

JLH is supposed to be that guy, I guess, but is there any other speed out there?

    Schillens?

    Shields?

Didn’t these guys run sub 4.4’s?

  27. raider11680 Says:

So we can’t afford Boldin? Ok then, what now? What happens to Carter and O’neal’s $ since they go to I.R. for the year? Do their salaries still count against the cap? maybe we can talk JW into restructuring his contract to make room for Boldin?

  28. 408RAIDER Says:

    Tonio

yup the signal for 650 is hella weak tho…. thank god 4 the net…

  29. Shawnraiders81 Says:

Hey MR take the #1 draft pick out for dinner he need the lift. Whats his name Alex something?

  30. Darren Says:

What happened to our Raiders??? They are horrible! Jamarcus Russell is a bust! This team will be lucky to go 2-14!

    Fire Kiffin now!!!!

  31. tonio Says:

Positives from the 1n’s: D line held the run… D backs got 3 interceptions… They got nearly nothing in the first half…and … were it a true game… we wouldn’t have gone for it on all those 4ths… J Russ was over 50% completion… (tho we need those Td’s)… Miller is still getting open… Walker… is showing us something (finally) and though… we’re a run first team… we passed first just to see what we’ve got. I’m still confident we’ll beat the bronco s on opening night… ( yeah boy …my tickets in hand )…

  32. Shawnraiders81 Says:

I think Erik Parker would be a good addition to the WR’s Lofton already knows him from SD

  33. tonio Says:

I hate that 560’s our ’station’ but it is what it is… the net is wicked… I’m conteplating bringing a lap top to the game! (not). lol we’re going to be much stronger on D… our run game is going to be stronger than last year… so… many positives coming…

  34. Shawnraiders81 Says:

    1) Roy Williams
    2) Boldin……

  35. raider11680 Says:

Can someone get the available WRs in free agency that are somewhat decent?

  36. tonio Says:

I’d be down for Parker… as WR …but I think chaz…and wadtkins… are capable… we’ll be a 70 run 30 pass team this year until we really get our pass blocking up to par… which Im totally down for…, much like Pitsburg did with Ben… we shall do with J russ… only ultimately he’ll be much stronger than Ben,.. we’ll have a stronger run game than the Steelers with Bush …DMC and Fargas… and our D is on the rise…

  37. MR Says:

I spit in your beer, Raider Nation.

  38. Jhill Says:

    Roy Williams ????

    Now you’re talking!

But Boldin? Not with Curry and Walker still on the squad.

  39. Huff24 Says:

    THIS IS B.S.

  40. tonio Says:

You’ll swallow more than our Beer M(o)Ron

  41. Ice Assassin Says:

That means we can keep one more WR so C. Schilens. We can also keep M Reece who could also be a WR/Te. This is very importent.

  42. tonio Says:

    Huff… we’ll be a run… and possession team… plain and simple… as Kiff said.. don’t panic…

  43. Darren Says:

Why do we always suck so bad each year?? Arizona is horrible!

  44. Jhill Says:

    I agree Tonio …

I think that we should stand pat with Walker and Curry starting. JLH gets a shot as the slot guy, with Schillens and Watkins rounding out that group. If they don’t get the job done, we have Shields and a first round pick to look forward to next year.

  45. tonio Says:

Imagine what Kiff could have done with Big bush… and a better Reg. Bush… at USC… it’s gonna be on

  46. Shawnraiders81 Says:

McFadden will play in the slot……

  47. Ice Assassin Says:

We need to focas on the O-Line to protect our Qb.

  48. raider11680 Says:

Whoever or whatever we do to improve the passing game, we need to make sure it works. With teams knowing we don’t have a deep threat they will just load the box and that will hurt our screen passes and dump offs as well…

  49. Blackholepriest Says:

It’s going to take all year for this passing game to develope, but it will.

  50. tonio Says:

Darren… we suck? come one dude… look at the game… as a whole…look at the starters as a whole… look… open your eyes… look..

  51. Shawnraiders81 Says:

plus I know Al will draft Wr’s and God willing a big DT next draft.

  52. MR Says:

You know it’s time to worry, when the Head coach is telling the FANS not to worry.

  53. Shawnraiders81 Says:

Tonio, it’s MR with multiple names…..

  54. tonio Says:

welcome home BHP…. I agree… by the second half of the year… J russ… will be lighting it up on the long ball… till then…we’ll be top 3 in rushing…

  55. Shawnraiders81 Says:

MR you know you should worry when J.T. o’somthin is your qb :-)

  56. tonio Says:

shawn…that’s why I refer to it as M(o)R(on).

I told you guys we’d suck this year.

  61. BIG Al Says:

I love you guys who are saying” just look at the first half.”

Kiffin said at half time, ” the offense is embarrasing.”

I guess after seeing the second half, the first half looked better.

  62. Blackholepriest Says:

You guys still want to dump Jano for Ellings?

  63. Ice Assassin Says:

What is it that the Raider need the most O-Line, D-Line or Linebacker?

  64. 408RAIDER Says:

    BHP

i take back all my NEW GUYS

  65. 408RAIDER Says:

yo Jerry whats up with the post game fix ??

  66. Jhill Says:

Is that you on the radio BHP ???

  67. James Says:

Kiffin should be fired. Bring in a real coach that gets this team ready to play.

  68. 408RAIDER Says:

I agree, Oakglenn. We do suck. My god. And, McFadden.,,what a joke. I never did like him. Good college player,..not NFL material.

  75. gfm975 Says:

Bouldin would be a nice grab… I hope they at least try and get him…

  76. raider11680 Says:

Oren O’neal IS the biggest loss here. But we have a good guy that can replace him in Griffith. We have WRs to take over for Carter, but none of them has proven to be anything special. Including Carter. I do see Watkins having some potential, and Chaz as well, HIggins? He has his moments while at WR.
I say Kiffin should start Walker, Watkins, and HIggins at WR next game against Seattle, who has a pretty decent D. And let’s see what they can do with the first team and Russell. Then put in Curry, Chaz, and somebody else to play with Walter.
Kiffin needs to see more from his passing game, specially now that the plans are going to have to change.
However, losing Carter might also be a blessing in disguise. Because it might give the opportunity to one of our young WRs to show what they can do. If no one distinguishes themselves after the Seattle game, then it’s time to go out and find someone else.

  77. BIG Al Says:

The Raiders looked GOOD tonight. Kiffin is a great play caller, especially in the REDZONE. I’m going to get to work on an extention for Kiffin immediately. I know alot of owners and GM’s in the NFL that would love to steal the boy genius away from Raider Nation. But I don’t think he would leave if he was given the opportunity. He seems like a LOYAL Raider.

  78. 408RAIDER Says:

Jim, basically, we sucked. As expected. ‘09 draft. That’s all I’m thinking about.

  80. Blackholepriest Says:

  81. Terrapin Says:

DAmn man …i’m lost as too what we’re going to do now. The running game is our staple and losing OO is a HUGE blow to it. Griffith is good but he’s no OO when it comes to laying down the law. I suppose we’ll have to compensate somehow but its not going to be easy. And OO is a STmer - who plays big on STs. Damn that hurts!

I guess we can use Wakefield as that FB. Just thinking. The coaches are going to have to figure it out.

Lets just hope Kiffin spoke prematurely on OO and Carter.

  82. BIG Al Says:

If Al fires Kiffin, we’re screwed. We need to give him at least 3 years. Without Kiffin, it’s a Davis shill at HC. You know how that goes. Davis himself doesn’t even understand the game anymore. So when you have one of his flunkies at the helm, well…

  83. MR Says:

I love the idea that there’s Raider employees in here. Watching me.

  84. MR Says:

Really 408 I am a Raider fan. I’m just having a little fun. Really. I love the Raiders. Really.

  85. Terrapin Says:

This defense could be near dominant though. A few more pieces and they’ll be unbreakable. They had both Warner and Lienhart flustered.

  86. MR Says:

I think you mean when Al fires Kiffin, BIG Al.

  87. BIG Al Says:

If Al let Kiffin run the team, choose his own staff, draft his own players, etc, we’d be a lot better. I know most teams don’t give that much power to their HC. But then again, most teams aren’t being ran by people as stupid as Al Davis. Anything is better than Al Davis. I guarantee you that you could put a cheerleader in charge of football personnel and she’d do better than 19-61 in 5 years.

  88. Huff24 Says:

Gotta love my boy Huff and that interception.

  89. BIG Al Says:

We’re toast if, OR WHEN, Al fires Kiffin. Who takes Kiffin’s place? A Davis lackey? Again, Davis himself has no clue how to build a team. So when you consider one of his underlings at the helm…yikes.

  90. BIG Al Says:

Stupid idiot ran right into the ref. Probably because he’s never intercepted a pass in his life. Huff sucks. Another Davis blunder. You really have to wonder about a fella who names himself after him…

  91. MR Says:

I’ve been to every single Raider game since 1999. Sort of my job.

  92. BIG Al Says:

I’ve been to every Raider game since 63, MR. How’s my ass taste?

Hey Al Davis, how’s the NFL’s ass taste?

  93. BIG Al Says:

MR is a pole smoker of the highest magnitude. He’s probably working the Castro right now. Then again, maybe MR plays for the Raiders. He could have been any of those faqs on the field tonight.

  94. Ice Assassin Says:

What is it that the Raiders need to Improve for the season. I think it is the O-Line, but we also need to get Wr that can catch the ball. I think that our Rookie WR can be what we need to get back to the top of the list and more so let’s go all out.

  95. BIG AL Says:

    I’m gay.

  96. BIG Al Says:

MR is a faq. So are the Raiders. At least they play like it. Kiffin’s their only hope.

  97. MR Says:

I’m good friends with Jerry but I’m doing fine on my own. I wish I were Michael Phelps.

  98. BIG Al Says:

You’re mom’s gay, Huff. He really is.

  99. Huff24 Says:

We could add Horn as a 3rd Receiver for the veteran minimum if he runs out of options. The other option is to give the young guys a chance to develop which isn’t a bad idea either and if that happens, I like what Schilens has to offer at this point.

Then it’s zero offensive production. Then it’s Al scapegoating Kiffin and replacing him with Norv Lofton. Then it’s 0-16 in ‘09. I will!

What’s up, everyone. Just got home.

First off, Kiffin is right. There is nothing to worry about. We’re loaded on talent, and even though tonight’s unfortunate injuries will hurt is, they will not deter us. We’ve still got Curry and Walker, who could be the best one/two punch in the league. JamRus is healthy. Our defense is still sharp. They looked sluggish tonight but it’s pre season! Cheer up, everyone. This is our year! Super Bowl!

Considering we passed more than we would in most regular season games, in one half, I can handle the inconsistencies. Russell only had two poor plays(to his credit) out of 25+ drop backs. Most of our passing game errors will be eradicated by the 40+ run attempts we will be running, so I am greatly encouraged by what I saw out of Russell and the WRs. I can live with the sacks as the 2nd one was more Russell’s fault and the defense knew we were going to pass on every play. I like what I saw, and frankly could care less about whatever spin the media puts on it. Our starters won that half in a landslide.

Kwame gave up ground too fast but Russell had a relatively easy lane to step up in and tried to outrun the rushers. But, like I said, I can live with it.

  120. Coach Says:

Whatever fellas…watch for the Broncos to run all over us in the second half of game 1…..our starting run defense sucked in the first 2 drives of the 2nd half! Unacceptable tackling!

  121. jim Says:

I say we go after joe horn I know he i savailable lets try to sign him, I doubt if arizona will trade boldin..as far as a replacement for oneal, I think we let bust take some of the load, gives him more playing time and at the same time he adds a threat to the running game..
