Bush seeing time at fullback

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 25th, 2008 at 6:09 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Quick hits from Monday’s practice and press availability at Raiders’ camp:

– With Oren O’Neal on injured reserve and waiver claim Luke Lawton yet to arrive, running back Michael Bush got in some reps at fullback. Bush said he saw it as an opportunity to get on the field and was willing to do what it took to help the team, but it’s fair to say he wasn’t exactly jumping for joy about the news.

“I’ve always been a team player, too, so it’s one of those things, you just suck it up, go about your business and try to have some fun with it,” Bush said.

Bush has fullback size at 245- to 250 pounds, and has the requisite receiving skills to be a weapon out of the backfield. But his blocking remains a work in progress _ he was a quarterback in high school and usually had the ball in his hands in college at Louisville _ and fullbacks with the Raiders seldom carry the ball from scrimmage.

“I’ve never played it before, but a player has to adjust and do what you’re coached,” Bush said.“I’m still waiting for my chance to carry the ball, as well. The more I can do the better, be a versatile player. So, that’s a good thing.”

If the Raiders are serious about Bush playing fullback along with Justin Griffith, it could mean Lawton’s time with the Raiders will be short. If it isn’t working out or Bush’s services are required as a running back due to attrition, they could always add another fullback at a later date.

– Marviel Underwood, the San Leandro High product who joined the Raiders Monday, and Nate Lyles, a safety from Virginia also signed, got plenty of work in the secondary and will play plenty against Seattle Friday night.

The injuries to O’Neal and Drew Carter have Kiffin thinking about emptying his bench before the game even starts. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and safeties Michael Huff and Rashad Baker all missed practice with ankle injuries and probably won’t face the Seahawks.

“For one series of work, I don’t see where that’s really worth the benefit of going out there,” Kiffin said.

– Defensive end Jay Richardson had a 105 degree temperature and did not practice. Kiffin said the medical staff was considering taking him to the hospital.

– Wide receiver Arman Shields, who hadn’t practiced since the first week of August, participated in drills and some team sessions, Kiffin said.

Kiffin said the Raiders will be watching his recovery closely Tuesday and acknowledged it will tough for Shields to make up for all the time he missed in terms of making the 53-man roster.

Shields is carefully filtering out all negative vibes.

“I’m in a positive situation. I have positive teammates that support me, they’re not negative,” Shields said. “I have a positive core group of wide receivers. All they do is support me. My coaches really support us so when you’re in that surrounding with supportive people, you’re not going to get frustrated. You’re going to find ways to get better and overcome that adversity.”

– Monday’s transactions left the Raiders with 77 players, meaning two more players will be released Tuesday.

– Jarrod Cooper’s exit is being characterized as a “retirement.” Kiffin said Cooper’s speed had not totally returned since his last surgery, and that the safety/special teams player decided to call it quits after a seven-year career.

“Whether we would have released him or not, that is really irrelevant,” Kiffin said. “He came in and was just done playing and wanted to retire.”

Fellow core special teams player Isaiah Ekejiuba said Cooper told him Monday morning he was going to talk to Kiffin about retiring. Ekejiuba figured Cooper was joking.

“I didn’t take him serious for a minute. I mean, it’s Coop,” Ekejiuba said. “He said it with a sly smile of his face, so I played it off, he went up stairs and said `I talked to Kiff,’ and Kiff made the announcement. Came as a shock really. It’s hard to lose somebody like that.”

Ekejiuba said Cooper had relayed doubts about his speed in recent days and that he had pain in his knee.

“When your body says it’s time, it’s time,” Ekejiuba said.

– Cooper’s exit was hastened by the development of fourth-round draft pick Tyvon Branch.

“He’s had a rep that’s looked like a Pro Bowl gunner, a guy who looks like a legitimate special teams Pro Bowler,” Kiffin said. “If he can carry that over, he can be a dynamic special teams player for us.”

– Monday’s roster additions included no wide receivers, with Kiffin hinting it was a matter that was out of his hands.

“I’m sure our personnel department will find us a wide receiver, add it to our group and we’ll see how far we can take him,” Kiffin said.

A possible mitigating factor on adding a veteran receiver before the regular season begins _ any vested veteran on the roster in Week 1 is guaranteed his entire salary. That means if you sign Joe Horn or Koren Robinson, you’d better be sure they’re good enough and healthy enough and problem-free enough to stick for the entire season.

– Kiffin said a starting regular season center could be named today.

– The Raiders closed practice to the media after warmups and drills as workouts included not only review of the Seattle game, but preparations for the Sept. 8 season opener against Denver.

  12. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

watching the charger game here in san diego and i can’t say i am impressed with their offense or defense especially the secondary it looks awful. frye out of all washed up quarterbacks is having a great game against their first team.

  13. Thec Says:

hey “professional troll” your first team d is garbage hahahahaha laughing at ya…

  14. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

the only cagado that is playing good is sproles

  15. KoolKell Says:

I would sure hate to see Bush’s talents wasted at FB. But if you’re gonna waste JaMarcus Russells talents on a dump off offense, anything is possible.

  16. Thec Says:

KK, since you got it all wired why dont you apply for a job in alameda…… LOL

  17. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

and ferriman is an idiot, i hope he does decide to play since his career will most likely be ended by our cut blocking oline or the donkeys oline. maybe they forgot that he will have to play at least 4 games this season against cut blocking teams and probably more but i don’t want to look them up.

  18. Thec Says:

fake kk, you want to see him in a dis-charger uniform???? chocolate rain guy????? funny i am cracking up at you

    Thec hold it down bro!!!

    KK stop hateing please!!!!

  20. DarthPirate Says:

SD’s D has been bad this preseason. Not sure that it’s anything to get excited about because it IS preseason, but they have looked lackluster thus far.

  21. Thec Says:

They are a diffrent team with out ferryman, and they just signed his backup to a 4 year contract. ferryman is done in san diego……

that just insured they wont be in the SB with there bacvkup QB rivers…..hahahahahahaa
    What up chocolate rain guy????

  22. DesertRaider24 Says:

Until we can get WRs that can consistently get open and actually CATCH the ball, then the dump off to the backs, or the 10-15 yard curl over the middle to Miller is all we’re going to see.

Heck, as long as we move the chains and score, it’ll be an improvement over last year–and don’t get me started on the “bed and breakfast” game plan of 2 years ago…

  23. Blackholepriest Says:

Bush at FB part-time is OK, IMO this is our most complete RB and I just don’t want him screwed up but in that set with either Fargas or DMC it would give us a dangerous combo. Fargas would block for Bush as well I’m not real sure about DMC.

Hopefully Shields can play in the final dress rehearsal, coaches need to see whay the kids got against another team.

  24. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

i can’t stand rivers someone on the seacocks team needs to go after his bum knee.

  25. DarthPirate Says:

    Fake KoolKell is stupid.

  26. kris Says:

bush is way too talented to play at fullback, it would be a mistake to put him there in a game.

just wait on a receiver - someone will get cut next week that is worth adding to the team.

  27. Thec Says:

I am excited becuase they are playing everyone except williams merriman is finished, and williams wont make it to game 4. we have been watching 1st team team. Our 1st team D has looked way better, and we got injuries.

So am i excited hell yeah…. wysiwyg

  28. Bob Marley Says:

    KK

You complain about Al Davis, you complain about Lane Kiffin, you just said you will gloat if the Raiders lose because of what some people say on this blog.

Lighten up old man, you keep that up and soon you won´t even enjoy a win anymore.

Just some friendly advice, hope you don´t mind.

  29. Thec Says:

    BHP, will we see shields?

  30. Thec Says:

marley, Bro that is a “professional troll” not kk.

  31. FIRE KIFFIN Says:

Did I miss Kiff’s pizza party this year?

    Just Win Baby.

  32. Blackholepriest Says:

KK I have to agree on Bush

  33. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

bush is not a good fit at fb, he is big physically but he doesn’t play big. griffith will do fine, if you guys didn’t know griffith was part of that falcon team that put up over 2,000 yards rushing not too long ago. oo will be missed because he is what the raiders of the olden days were known for and that is being physical and smashmouth.

  34. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

griffith is a perfect fit for the type of blocking scheme we run, no need to worry about the loss of OO.

  35. GOT YOUR BACK Says:

Hey why not go after Owen Schmidt if the Hawks cut him. They are not going to keep 4 fullbacks and Schmidt is a sledgehammer.

  36. DarthPirate Says:

NoLuv4Hoes: I agree that Griffith will do fine. He’s a good blocking fullback and a great pass catcher. But he’s not the blocking beast that Oren was/is. I hope he returns to full health for next year.

  37. Blackholepriest Says:

I certainly hope so Thec, and I’m sure he hopes so.

I know I’ve said it before, but this kid is very talented and we need him. He can help us this year.

  38. Ice Assassin Says:

Raider Nation from what I am seeing from the dis-chargers we should have a field with our running game.

  39. Tommy Trojan Says:

Better to go with a BIG than have players out of position. Bush on a FB dive would be dangerous, as would a dump off out of a Bootleg. It’s a nice way of getting Bush on the field. As long as Bush is never listed as a FB or sees time as a lead blocker, I’m fine with it, as long as it’s simply a way to get McFadden and Bush on the field at the same time. Our offense is centered on the I so it would be an anomally to see a Splitback with both backs. More isolation running and cutbacks than drive blocking. It can definitely work, under the right circumstances.

  40. KoolKell Says:

    Bob Marley,

Yes I complain about everything, I worry about everything, WE’VE WON ONLY 19 OUT OF OUR LAST 80 GAMES. What is there to talk sheit about???????????????????????????????

  41. KoolKell Says:

Thec, Marley knows my voice, mind your own business.

  42. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

darth dont get me wrong i love the way oo plays ball but it is not that hard to find fullbacks in this league. they really don’t need to do much but pick up the blitz and open up holes. I hope OO’s career isn’t over, from what i read the guy gave back to the community and is a very dedicated football player. god works in mysterious ways if you believe in that kind of stuff.

  43. Ice Assassin Says:

Nation is there any chance that Rookie Wr Chaz Schilens can make the 53 man roster with D. Carter out for the season?

  44. They Call Me Assassin Says:

No chance the hawks cut schmitt. He IS a hammer but is also productive on offense. Holmgren likes him a lot according to the announcers. No chance he is cut.

To Tommy T’s point, just having Bush on the field with DMAC will be fine as long as the plays called are counters and cutbacks as he said. Keeping the front seven is the name of the game, especially when teams no we want to run. Why not make them guess which direction. I think Oren is 100% better than Bush in regards to blocking between the tackles, but a cutback only requires a chip which a relatively fast 250 pounder should be able to do. The RB who will really miss OO is Fargas. He makes his leaving getting to the LOS and pounding out a few yards.

Not great news but it works fine for now.

  45. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

good point ttrojan, if they use bush and mcfadden in the same backfield it will cause mismatches as long as bush isn’t a lead blocker

  46. Chris Says:

I think Bush working out at FB is a good thing as he will get on the field. Griffith will be the starter and play a lot, but Bush could get some reps and if he does become our goaline and short yardage guy having him line up as a FB isn’t such a bad thing. The more guys that you have that can do multiple things the better. That is why special teams players like Ekejiuba even make the team. Bush could be a good lead blocker with his size and he knows how to hit a hole obviously. I think where he’d struggle is in blitz pickup, which is where he still lacks skill as a RB.

Koren Robinson would be a good pickup because he could also return kicks.

  47. Thec Says:

KK, again if you owned this blog i would have respect for you and listen…. I wouldnt listen to you either way BRO…… I laugh at guys like you professional blogger types….

  48. garthraider Says:

Thec, thats the problem in here, one never is SURE who they are responding to,the trolls are here every day.In my opinion,Jerry needs to tighten the ship/register all

  49. Tommy Trojan Says:

For those who suggested Cook, from the Texans because he has ZBS experience, we’re not looking for a cut blocking FB. We have that in Griffith. We’re looking for a power blocker to compliment our system rather than fit into it. For the plays where the opponent knows we are running and we remain intent on running, we need a power guy. The zone system is used to get defenders out of position and off balance by putting them in space with multiple running lanes. When the defenders are off balance, that’s when you want to hit them in the mouth with a lead blocker like O’Neal. O’Neal was great late in the game. Bush is a nice wrinkle at FB because it isolates a great athlete at a position that is often overlooked. Late in games, we need a power blocker who can bowl over LBs in space. Griffith can handle blitz pickups, catch passes, and cut block. He’s one pof the better FBs in the NFL. Late in the game, I would be completely fine with putting in a blocking TE like Wakefield as a lead blocker, or even an athletic lineman like Henderson, who, while deficient as a pass blocker, is great in space and is a better athlete than some FBs. Our tall RBs should still have little problem seeing. O’Neal brought an element to our offense that will take some creativity to restore, but it can be done as is. Of course, if a lead blocker comes available, we should look at him.

  50. Thec Says:

KK, He knows your voice?????? Man thats some strange ish last time i checked oe typed….. He know my voice, GOD complex? ROFLMAO you must be a “somebody” on this blog……

  51. Oakglenn Says:

No Ice. Chaz looks waaaaay too raw and tentative out there. I’m actually a little disappointed in what Schilens has looked like.

On Another note tho, I thought that kid Hightower that the “fartin holes” ran out looked good. Shields was a team mate of his, so maybe Shields has a future here!!

  52. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

did anyone see newberry try to shove the ball up his own a$s? well it didn’t fit and it ended up on the floor, ky newberry ky. lol

  53. They Call Me Assassin Says:

I hope Schilens does make the final 53. Yeah, the odds aren’t good when it comes to rookie WR’s making an immediate impact. But at least he’s long and fast and has shown the ability to go up and get it. Give him a chance. Just having him on the field will open up opportunities for Curry.

If the debate is Watkins or Schilens, I say Schilens. We know Watkins has had chances in this league and hasn’t produced. Might as well give Schilens the same chance. He’s shown enough in pre-season to merrit an extended look.

  54. Thec Says:

merrymans backup tucker just went down with an injury….. Those of you who have the dis-chargers winning that included you too kk chocolate rain guy need to resync.

  65. jim Says:

I love the idea of having bush as a full back, he reminds me alot of tom rathman from the 49ers back in their hey day.he can run the ball good and can catch out of th eback field..I say use bush unless we can find a better option after all the final cuts…as far as a wr.I am sure we will find a good replacement soon..lets wait unitl the final cuts and see what is avaialabl, eif nothing good is free well then lets shoot for horn or robinson..

Why don’t you kiss my assz, and leave me alone? I’ve got no use for you right now, ok?

  68. Ice Assassin Says:

Oakglenn I know that a rookie Wr is raw but if he is our fifth Wr he will not play much and could get experience in practices. He has been better then the injury prone Arman Shields who Kiffin was excited about. They both have very good size so I would like to see both atleast make the practice squad.

  69. DarthPirate Says:

Charlie Frye the pro bowler. lmao.

  72. NoLuv4Hoes Says:

plus not many teams keep two fb’s on the roster. no need to worry, it makes more room for more fa’s for our oline wr lbs safetys cb

  73. Oakglenn Says:

Mike Bush as a full back. I gotta be honest with you all, it has some promise but overall he’s waaaay too valuable to use as a lead blocker. I like Tommy Trojans idea of having Wakefield as an H back or Mario Henderson as a lead blocker. Sweeet.

  74. Tommy Trojan Says:

WR depth is not a big problem as we will only very rarely have 3 WRs on the field.

  75. Thec Says:

KK faker drone, didnt you mean to say hey Thec tell me who my azz taste? hahahahaha. see whats makes you so funny is you are a mindless dupe. Your mind is being controlled and you have no idea by how or who. I know i am right about you sybil……. you are a funny little man if you are a man at all….. every time you post chocolate rain ” I know your voice” ROFLMFAO…..
    you are tooooo funny

  76. Ice Assassin Says:

Oakglenn Wakefield has already learned 4 postion would a 5th be good for him or would it hurt him in the fact that they al have different responsablity’s. Mario henderson could work cause he is not doing well at OT.

  79. Tommy Trojan Says:

A 250lb RB running behind a 300lb FB would be scary in the 4th quarter, or any quarter……..

  80. Oakglenn Says:

Exactly Ice. Mario Henderson just looks like an athlete out there. Maybe he could be a crushing blocker. Offensive linemen normally like that. Especially late in games!

  81. Tommy Trojan Says:

Henderson saw some time at TE on Friday, so it’s not as if the coaching staff is against experimenting with his athleticism.

  82. Bob Marley Says:

Some info on that new guy Nate Lyles, from his Pre-Draft Profile:

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter who posted 68 tackles and broke up two passes as a senior after 46/1/3 the previous year.

POSITIVES: Tough run-defending safety who is at his best in the box. Quick up the field, displays a straight-line burst of speed, and chases hard to get involved in the action. Displays good awareness and above-average instincts.

NEGATIVES: Lacks top ball skills and sideline-to-sideline range. Does not consistently play under control.

ANALYSIS: Lyles has marginal size, yet he displays the toughness and wherewithal to be used in a zone system. He also has a special teams mentality, which could help him make it at the next level.

    From his Pro Day:

Lyles, a safety, sparkled in the vertical leap (36 inches), the bench press (22 reps with 225 pounds) and the 40-yard dash (4.48 and 4.42).

“He was awesome,” (Chris) Long said. “That was Nate. We’re not surprised. I’m glad he got to show his stuff. As good as he might work out, he’s a better teammate and just a tough, tough kid.”

    - Real longshot, he was already cut once, from NYJ Camp because they brought Ahmad Carroll for a shot.

  83. KoolKell Says:

3 preseason games. How many TouchDowns have the Raiders scored?

  84. Ice Assassin Says:

Oakglenn I totally agree he is a very impressive athlete and it would be worth taking the chance to find out.

  85. Bob Marley Says:

Played at Virginia, is 5′10 205.

  86. jim Says:

lets not forget that griffin is th estarting full back, so using bush as a back up opens up alot, yes hewould be required to block some, but he would also be available for check down passes, as well as quick hand offs.Just think if we handed the ball to bush instead of oneal in the titans preseason game, we probably would of scored…personally I would love to see bush on the field whenever we could use him..he would be a big assest..let griff do the majority of the blocking like he did when he was in atlanta, and let bush be more of a recieving/running full back…

as far as wr no tbeing a problem, well I disagree all we have now is walker and curyy..so yes we need at least one more proven reciever

  87. Oakglenn Says:

Why not Ice? Tommy brought this up, it makes me feel good that the coaches are experimenting with getting guys on the field. Jesus, even the starting defense played the Tampa 2 for a couple of plays last game. Hilarious.

  88. Ice Assassin Says:

Oakglenn Why not? I was Agreeing with you and think we should try it.

  94. Oakglenn Says:

I was agreeing with you as well Ice.

Using Mike in practice until someone gets up to speed would be a really good idea. Mike is a real smart guy and it just gives him a better grasp of what is going on out there. Using Mike as a lead blocker??? I think we could get someone else and utilize Mikes talents better.

  95. Jim (ct raider) Says:

two tight ends, i formation, bush then goes to slot… hand off to bush, pitch to bush, play action fake to miller, play action fake to walker (deep) w/TEs staying in, deep to bush down the middle, screen to bush, a lot of results from one formation.

  106. E-shizzle Says:

Shields is our guy! He is the truth, I can’t wait to see him in action against the Seahawks. It’s unfortunate that he bumped knees in practice with a CB which caused him to sit out so long, but if that never happened Shields would be a weekly highlight reel. Raider fans get your popcorn ready!!!! He’s baacccccckkk!!!!!

I agree with Terp, keep Michael Bush away from FB.

We want to keep this kid long-term and the second we move him to FB his mind will be made up not to re-sign with us. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t Michael Bush only under contract for this season? If we want to keep him as a Raider, we will need to feed him the ball at HB a few times a game and find a way to move Fargas after this season. Michael Bush is the real deal, and we need to secure him long-term and moving him to FB will guarantee his departure in my opinion. The dude has always been THE MAN and now we are asking him to be a 3rd string RB, and he might handle that for one season, but I doubt he would embrace a move to the inglorious position of FB.

“I’ve always been a team player, too, so it’s one of those things, you just suck it up, go about your business and try to have some fun with it,” Bush said.

See what I mean? No way Bush sticks around if we try to turn him into a FB. Would you accept the cut in potential pay by allowing yourself to be converted to a FB? No one in their right mind would accept that. Bush was already pissed about not being activated last year…

  108. Terrapin Says:

Oh No …those comments from Bush telegraphed his enthusiasm for this idea …don’t do this to the poor boy Kiff ..he’s been through enough already. Now you want to give him reps at FB? Say its only temporary until you fly the new FB in.

Like I said before. Kiffin better be doing this only if he intends on running Pro-Sets or something using some trickery with both DMC & Bush in the backfield. Otherwise, I don’t think its the wisest of ideas. But we’ll just have to wait it out and see what comes of it.

  109. Jim (ct raider) Says:

    Gil: Yes i am!

i guess i did forget about McFadden getting the ball out of the “i” didnt I? oops.. add him in there.

Bush can go out to the slot as well

  111. Oakglenn Says:

Ice I think there are going to be some PLAYAS in final cut downs that can help us win!! There always are. Remember when we picked up Andre Rison for nothing many years ago, and he had a good year for us??

Maybe Gruden goes younger and Ike Hilliard doesn’t make it, or Bellichik goes with vets and Chad jackson in New England gets cut. Good players that just don’t fit at the time.

  112. Bob Marley Says:

Nice to hear that Cooper may stick around.

Kiffin: “He’s a really neat guy who has done a lot of things here, has a lot of relationships with a lot of the players here.

It maybe even something that we keep him involved during the season, coming in on Wednesdays during the special teams meetings, being around the guys and working with the young guys as well.”

    Kiffin on Branch:

“Every time Tyvon has a chance to do something on special teams he’s looked great. He just looks faster than everybody else out there. That’s a credit to him. That’s not just speed, it’s the way he plays and how hard he plays. The play the other night was as good as it gets.”

  113. KoolKell Says:

    How many TD’s in 3 pre-season games?

  114. Dakota Says:

  115. KoolKell Says:

    Bob,

How many TD’s in 3 preseason games?

  116. Oakglenn Says:

Watch the waiver wire out of Cleveland. That team is PACKED with WR’s and they’re not gonna keep 11 WR’s.

  117. Ice Assassin Says:

Oakglenn I hope we can get a good one and not an Injury prone player.

  118. SilverNblack666 Says:

You guys are going to figure it out half way through the season how great of a blocker OO was and how much he played a part in our being 5th in the league in rushing last year. The guy was an excellent blocker and paved the way for many of Fargus’s yards last year. Griffin will do a good job but we need another FB or we will lose him. This will definitely effect our running game!

Thats why Kiffin is so pisswd about that injury and I don’t blame him. The one good thing we had to build on from last year was our ability to run the ball.

  119. Oakglenn Says:

Kool Kell when we beat the lame Whiners in the first preseason game, weren’t you in here saying how nothing matters-it’s the preseason???

  120. KoolKell Says:

How many TD’s in 3 games???????

  121. SilverNblack666 Says:

    KoolKell

How many TD passes did JR throw on Saturday night when Kiffin did what you have always advised him to do. Air it out!

How well did the passing game look?

Now are you seriously going to sit in here and tell all of us repeatedly how we need to let JR throw the ball deep all game.

  122. Oakglenn Says:

Ice there are guys that just either slip thru the cracks or are not system fits, or a team just wants to go in another direction. Nothing wrong with the player. The good news as I always say is WR is probably the easiest position to fill with studs. There are going to be players out there for us!! Having an absolute stud at QB will also attract any potential FA’s that get released.

  123. willie Says:

someone please explain to the folks, its PRE SEASON,its not baseball!

  124. Jim (ct raider) Says:

rudy johnson is officially being offered as bait for a “legitimate reciever” per cincinatti….hmmm where do you think boldin is going? 2nd round pick…. Carson Palmer

  125. Ice Assassin Says:

Oakglenn that is what we need a great stud at WR because if J Walker can’t step it up and play like the coaches thought he could. We will only have one Wr in R Curry and he is our key 3rd down Wr. So lets beleive our team can get what we need.

Hopefully Shields suits and doesn’t have too much rust on him …Kiffin needs to go directly at him to see what he’s got just like he had plays set up for Walker

…and hopefully Branch gets that cast off so he can return Kicks. We need to see what we’ve got there too.

  128. dick v Says:

kk 3 maybe two. whats your point

  129. dick v Says:

I like having Bush on the field as fb. It gets more play makers out there. He would be nice on a bootleg. He will not be asked to be a oren oneal lorenzo oneal type.
he justs allows the Raiders to expand the versatility of the current packages.

  130. KoolKell Says:

    Dick V,

Thanks I was guessing 3. My point is simple. I see the same team as last year. Can’t score, can’t force teams to pass, our strength. Can’t score points, can’t win. Probably can’t stop the run either.

How many yards did they give up on the ground Sat Nite.

And people are telling me not to worry.

  131. Dan Dee Says:

Exactly how has Jamarcus Russell, in one regular season game and parts of three pre-season games PROVEN himself to be a Stud that receivers are droolng to play with?

  132. Terrapin Says:

I don’t know man …if I were Bush I’ll have to seriously ponder suing the organization for grouse mismanagement of its players …putting a talent like that at FB.

Micheal Bush: “Judge, I don’t know what to say. They took a potential Hiesman candidate at RB and tried to convert me to FB. Judge, you tell me - what was I suppose to do?”

I bet his agent is on the phone right now trying to get him the hell outta here.

  133. dick v Says:

Imagine having micheal bush split out one on one with a lb and Dmac or fargas still in the backfield. When life gives you lemons, …. make some damn lemon aide and enjoy it, or cry and say that is why we are 19-61 over the past 5 yrs: worst in the league.

  134. Oakglenn Says:

Guys who I might be looking to hit the wire in the next two weeks, Jerevicious, McCareins, Taylor Jacobs, James Thrash, Finneran, Muhammed. Guys we might be able to get one more productive year out of.

  135. Terrapin Says:

Sht…maybe we should made Moss a RB …that would’ve put the ball directly in his hands!

(I’m just having fun w/ it …we’ll see how it plays itself out)

  136. Jim (ct raider) Says:

btw: i meant deep to mcfadden.. having mcfadden go to the slot leaving bush alone in the backfield to run. too much bush on my mind! lol!

two tight ends power set and then move mcfadden to the slot.. or bush in motion (behind the TEs) and a pitch to mcfadden.

  137. Oakglenn Says:

No one is telling you not to worry. We’re just saying worry over there in the corner.

  138. dick v Says:

he is 3rd string rb. would you rather have him on the side line. He hasn’t even played a meaningful game in two years. Why would he cry?, and if he does would listen besides Raider fans on this blog.

  139. Oakglenn Says:

Jesus KK we’re hoisting a QB out there with one NFL start. One. That’s a letter N away from NONE. Charlie Frye has 19 starts for crissakes. And you are the only one whining. The rest of us can’t wait to play the games. Including the guy with one start.

  140. dick v Says:

damn i know Niner fans and Bronco fans that are more optimistic than some of our very own. Its a damn shame.

  141. MR Says:

Oakglenn, What do you mean letter N?

  142. LosT Says:

Oneal will be missed more on special teams than in the backfield…

Look for us to run the pro formation with Fargas and Mcfadden or Bush and Mcfadden at times…

Used to run this with Bo and Marcus…

  143. dick v Says:

and i mean they are optimistic about the Raiders chances this season in some ways more than their own respected teams.

  144. Dan Dee Says:

All of you who are salivating over the possible return to action of receiver Arman Shields, keep in mind he comes to the NFL directly from the Richmond Spiders of the Colonial Football Conference. The CFC is home to great football powerhouses such as: Hofstra, Towson, Villanova, William and Mary, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Delaware…. Any defensive backs playing in the NFL from those teams? I kind of doubt it. LMFAO!

  145. MR Says:

How many touchdowns have we scored this preseason????

  146. Bob Marley Says:

Once again, Bush took “a few snaps” at FB because the new guy was still on a plane or something.

My guess is that you will never see Bush as a lead blocker in a game, he may line up at FB in a few formations as an added wrinkle to the offense but that´s it.

  147. Coach on Wheels Says:

FB is all about 1 thing - attitude. Bush is not likely to be the guy and that’s fine. He’s going to get reps at HB in this running game.

  148. Oakglenn Says:

Once again Bob Marley chimes in as the voice of reason with post 148.

  149. MR Says:

  151. Oakglenn Says:

  152. Dan Dee Says:

Who should the Raiders draft with their top-5 draft choice in 2009? Just wondering.

  153. Oakglenn Says:

So did Cromatie, Flacco, Leodis McElvin, all first round draft choices this year.

  154. MR Says:

Oakglenn, How does Mcfadden feel about being red shirted this year by Kiffin?

  155. KoolKell Says:

3 Touchdowns in 3 games, yeah we’ll blow out the donks. out

    Great speech by Michelle.

  156. Muchoman Says:

And Mike Williams came from USC, so ya never know.

  157. Bob Marley Says:

    COW…148.

    “FB is about attitude”

Couldn´t agree more, Bush does not even seem to embrace the run between the tackles, “power” back role, which also requires a bruiser mentality.

  158. Dan Dee Says:

If another couple Raiders get injured, at least there will be an excuse for this season.

  159. Oakglenn Says:

we’ll get some more WR’s once they hit the wire.

  160. 925 Raider Says:

If everybody stuck to trying to make intelligent conversation about Raider football, and left out all the snarky remarks and personal attacks, the trolls might go away. This place is now like open-mike night at some comedy club.

  169. Oakglenn Says:

Same thing with Tampon Bay. Look at the New York Giant roster as well. they had a ton of guys hurt so backups got experience. David Tyree may not stick.

  170. Big Daddy WooWoo Says:

I think Bush is willing to do what it takes to get on the field.

I don’t think they’re looking for him to be the starting fullback, just someone who can come in in take some reps.

I figured he was itching for PT when I saw him covering kickoffs…

  171. 925 Raider Says:

I would think Bush would welcome the opportunity to get on the field. How many carries will he get splitting time with McFadden and fargas?

  172. Jim Lofton Says:

Hell with snagging a bunch of wide outs,…the only chance at any success is running the ball,…dont pass more then 15 times a game,..not this year anyway,…if we dont lead the league in rushing this year its over….even if we do, best scenario is 8-8…keepin it real.

  173. Coach on Wheels Says:

There are bubble guys like Devin Ashomondu in Indy listed as their #5 WR who leads the team in preseason including a 94 yarder against Buffalo who may come on.

Simpson in Cincy is #6 on the depth chart and leads their WR’s.

Other team’s depth will mean opportunities for us at WR. Let’s face it. If our guys would be no better than #4-6 in Indy, that means Indys 4-6 would challenge to start here.

  174. Oakglenn Says:

Well you guys Mike Bush is one of the most unselfish team guys you will ever see in sports so both 925 and Big Daddy you are completely right. He was a highly recruited QB out of high school but Bob Petrino had Brian Brohm so he told Mike to be a RB, and Mike did we Petrino wanted to get on the field and win.

kk; is she now proud to be an american? Appearantly, she had to mend the fences between her hubby and hillary. Too much ego between them to do it themselves. How exactly is he going to reach across the aisle when there is difficulty reaching to the one next to you?

  177. Jim (ct raider) Says:

COW: it’s always the 4,5,6 receivers that lead preseason. Remember a couple (maybe a few more) we had a gentleman who led the NFL in preaseaon and he didn’t make the team. I’ll never forget the catch OVER the db in the endzone. He flipped over the db. I believe he ended up going to GB and then didn’t make it. He was good in preseason a couple years.. i can’t remember his name.

  178. KoolKell Says:

Well see. I think she’s “real american” enough.

  179. K-Rock Says:

Browns have a lot of WRs, but will most likely keep 5 or 6 on the Roster.

Very few vets will get cut…Maybe these guys?
    1. Joe Jurevicius - 11 years
    2. Efrem Hill - 2 years

    Then they have…
    1. Paul Hubbard - R 6th round pick
    2. Steve Sanders - 1 year - undrafted FA
    3. Syndric Steptoe - 1 year - 7th round pick (Possible)
    4. Travis Wilson - 3 years - 3rd round pick (Possible)

If the browns keep 6 WR, then Steptoe and Wilson will make the team. If they keep 5, then 1 of them will be gone.

  180. Oakglenn Says:

Jerevicious started 16 games for them last year on a high scoring offensive team. He could be a very good #3, move the chains, big red zone target for us.

  186. K-Rock Says:

Here is part of an article on the Browns…

Who’s No. 3? With Donté Stallworth set as a starter, and with Braylon Edwards, Joshua Cribbs and Joe Jurevicius all sidelined, there will be lots of passes available for Kevin Kasper, Travis Wilson, Steve Sanders, Syndric Steptoe, Paul Hubbard, Efrem Hill and Lance Leggett. No one has separated in the free-for-all for the No. 3 wideout role.

  187. Bob Marley Says:

Kiffin´s main concern yesterday was the lack of game experience beyond Walker and Curry.

They could be looking at guys like Ernest Wilford in Miami and Marty Booker in Chicago to name a couple, I´ve read rumors that they might be cut, it remains to be seen if it´s true, but that´the kind of player we could use right now.

We don´t need other team´s developmental prospects, we already have our own….Everyone has guys like Watkins and Schilens, trading ours for someone else´s is a lateral move.

That’s fine. The point remains. Our talent at that position is shallow enough that castoff players (like two guys named Javon Walker and Drew Carter) from deep teams can become starters here.

  194. GuamanianRaider Says:

How many TD’s in three games? None.

The games have not been played yet. Sometimes I’m amazed at the fragility expressed here. We showed our weakness, even stuck out our chin for the smash in the mouth (Kiffin’s advertisement to avoid the run), and we learned exactly what we already knew… we are a running team that will make its bread-n-butter passing game on the play action. Hell, sometimes when they stack 8 or (licking my chops) 9 in the box we’ll audible (JaMarcus has shown savvy here) and bust them up (even with wide receiver screens with #20 split out). We went mostly one-dimensional on Saturday. It was a “practice” game, and I think we learned a lot about our line, quarterback, receiver depth, and team timing. All have to improve. Let’s remember the tone of this blog once we complete week three.

Hey troll or KK alter, I’ll tell you how many TD’s after three games before we play the Chargers for the division lead.

I just want to if Shields has what I think he has, if so WR problem solved. I like the idea of:

    Walker
    Curry
    Higgins
    Shields
    Watkins
    and either Hollands or Schelins.

Ordinary to look at on paper, but if Shields can come in and get up to speed I think we’ll be OK

We’re not going to throw more than 10 to 15 passes to a wideout anyway. Not with this coach so why do we need them? The RB’s and TE’s will catch the majority of the passes. This is looking much like a pedestrian offense again.

I hate t say it but I agree with KK, this coach is very conservative. Randy Moss would’ve been a waste here, now I know why he never really reached out to
    him.

He would much rather hit McFadden in the flat than Walker on a 9 route. It’s painfully obvious.

Sometimes I wonder what the experienced coaches really think of him privately.

  196. dick v Says:

kk, you probably shouldn’t worry. The Raiders have made some marginal gains across every unit. They have added two more potential play makers on offense, and have one very solid qb calling shots in the huddle: first time since Gannon went down. For you to say this is the same team as last year, it shows how beaten down you are for all the loosing.
Russell vs mccown or dc - upgrade
Dmac, fargas, bush vs jordan, rhodes fargas - huge up grade

can;t have boldin, tj, and cj

  199. Blackholepriest Says:

Pre-season or regular season at some point you neeed to let Russell loosen up his arm. What did we get this kid for when Josh McCown would’ve been fine for what we’re doing. lol

The mere fact that we haven’t thrown one pass over 25 yards tells me a lot. Yeah we did it in garbage time I mean with the starters,…zero.

  200. 925 Raider Says:

It’s really kind of sad that we are looking forward to getting some other team’s reject WR to complete our receiving corps. With only four days before our last pre-season game, how can we really get a guy in here and get him up to speed to play in that game? How can the coaches really evaluate a guy and feel confident about adding him to the roster in that short a time? Unless we are able to get a real veteran WR, I think we have to go with the best of who we already have.

  201. Blackholepriest Says:

COW wasn’t Javon Walker a starter everywhere he played or is it just me?

  202. 925 Raider Says:

What’s so awful about chucking the ball 40 yards downfield anyway? Balls can be intercepted on short routes too, as Lienart proved Saturday night. Better to have the ball intercepted 40 yards downfield than 10 yards….

  203. Blackholepriest Says:

925 If Big Al does get a bigtime WR, Kiffin better update the playbook because the one we’re using will get him fired. More accurately be more aggressive in his playcalling. All the flat routes and underneath stuff is driving me crazy. Yu have WR that have 4.3 speed and they’re running a bunch of stop patterns slants, outs and crosses. I’ve only seen a few digroutes to Watkins and Walker and one to Schelins other than it’s a bunch of dinks and dunks.

Why the hell do we need an all-star WR corp to do that?

Big Ben… ran and made short completions to ward. that’s how they won the bowl during big ben’s 2nd year. i don’t know any drop back qbs that won a bowl that young. marino is the only one i think of making it. i think your confusing sprinters with wr. rice was a slant man. didn’t catch many true bombs.. but a lot of yac on slants

  208. Jim (ct raider) Says:

there are valid points about not needing name receivers… montana’s first two bowl wins who was the wrs? i remember freddie solomon. Who were brady’s receivers his first two sb wins? i believe patton was the top one and the little guy (old now,, played defense).

  209. sweep the leg Says:

You gotta have time to throw, and right now we don’t have enough. It will come, and I’m starting to believe JR might be the real deal and be the guy that will get it done.
Also, even if we’re not utilizing our receivers the way we should, the other team has to respect thier game. You’re right we don’t need all-stars, but we don’t need scrubs.

    Troy Brown.

  211. garthraider Says:

Jim,just made a final beer run, hopefully the Raiders open up the playbook ,big time,Sept8th! RAIDERS

  212. sweep the leg Says:

    BHP, still out there?

  213. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

bush at fullback…RIDICULOUS!!!! sorry fellas, this isn’t tecmo bowl. bush IS NOT a FB. yes he’s big. yes he can catch. but you know what he can’t do(and what’s also a pre-req for playing FB in the NFL) BLOCK!!!! don’t get all juiced up about this. i’m sure he was taking reps due to the fact there’s only ONE OTHER fb on the roster

this is nearly as ridiculous as mario henderon playing TE. just because he looks the part, doesn’t mean he’s the man(despite what big al thinks). besides, raider fullbacks don’t get a lot of carries. i kinda thought most of us were in favor of bush getting some touches.

madden and fantasy ball have really warped some brains in here

  214. Blackholepriest Says:

It takes the same amount of time to throw 40 yards as it does to to go thru procession and dump it off.
It’s simple 5 step drop and release with the kind of speed we have. a stop pattern takes the same amount of time unless your coach doesn’t want it. Then yu do it under duress.

All you have to do is watch Farve throw deep in 2.5 seconds he’ll have a 40-50 yard gain. I do remember Brady throwing deep occasionally to loosen up the defense. That’s all I’m talkung about

If you throw deep 3 or 4 times a game that’s really all you need. That will get the respect of the defense.

  215. Kevin Says:

Damn Cooper, your still the Man. Good luck dude

  216. sweep the leg Says:

I think the point was’nt that you can’t take a shot now and then. But if you wan’t a “deep game”, it takes more than chucking it down field. I know you realize that. Believe me, we will all be happy when our offense gets back to that level.

  217. sweep the leg Says:

    wasn’t; want. It is late.

  218. Blackholepriest Says:

Oh Boy!! who’s talking about just chucking it downfield. For cryin’ out loud, why is this so hard to undestand. If you want have the underneath stuff work you must get the respect of the defense or else they will creep up and sit on your offense.

It’s simple offensive football folks! if someone is sleeping on a post or corner you TAKE it.

All you guy’s are so brain damaged with the Art Shell Tom Walsh offense until tour scared to death of a complete passing game. One that’s well choreographed and opens things up underneath.

It’s just that every time I mention this, I get the same reaction.
