Cooper among cuts
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 25th, 2008 at 2:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.
No confirmation from the Raiders yet, but according to an NFL source, safety and special teams player Jarrod Cooper was cut Monday.
Also released were veteran defensive end Greg Spires and linebacker Grant Irons.
The Raiders claimed fullback Luke Lawton, who was waived by Philadelphia, and signed defensive back Marviel Underwood out of San Diego State. Underwood starred locally at San Leandro High.
Lawton, 6-foot and 240 pounds, has also been property of the Bills, Giants, Falcons, Jets and Colts. Lawton made the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent out of McNeese State in 2004.
Three players were placed on injured reserve, ending their seasons: wide receiver Drew Carter, fullback Oren O’Neal and cornerback John Bowie.
More to come later . . .

I guess we need special teamers that can play a position.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
first!
August 25th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Cooper was no good after the roids left his system

Damn! I am a moron!

And another scholarship revoked?
August 25th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Greg Spires gone!!!!!! Yeah that means Trevor Scott is quite on thier mind and he did get in the first half
August 25th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
BTW: Michael Bush made a nice coverage play…
August 25th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Trade for Deverey Henderson right now!!!!
August 25th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
or perhaps the verbal jabs to the press get results?
Either way, all those moves make sense to me.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Young guy with excellent speed and moves with a pair of good hands……..they love robert meachem and need a draft pick
August 25th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Big Daddy of course they do but now the moves that need to be done Wade at center McQ at RT

A little info on Lawton:

COLTS TRADE LUKE LAWTON TO EAGLES
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 6, 2008, 12:19 p.m. EDT
The Philadelphia Eagles have announced the acquisition of fullback Luke Lawton in a trade with the Colts.
Indianapolis received a conditional 2009 draft choice, which probably means the Eagles will get a chance to try Lawton out through training camp and the preseason and will only have to give compensation to the Colts if Lawton makes the roster.
The 27-year-old Lawton has spent time on the Giants’ and Bills’ practice squads and played four games for the Jets in 2005 and 11 for the Colts in 2007. He has never started a game, but did have a notable highlight last year when he caught a shovel pass from Peyton Manning for a one-yard touchdown against the Jaguars. He’s also a contributor on special teams.
That the Eagles felt the need to acquire a fullback could be a sign that the coaching staff has doubts about the ability of Dan Klecko to make the transition from defensive tackle to fullback. Thomas Tapeh, who played fullback for the Eagles last season, signed with the Vikings as a free agent.

Oren and Cooper were two leaders of the special teams, with Ekubejia(I tried). With Higgins back there looking ready to fumble at any moment, two core special teams guys gone, Lechler ailing, and Seabass being Seabass, special teams look like it might be an issue from time to time this year

Vegas……watch Higgins take 2 punts for TDs this year……..people are hating big time on the guy
August 25th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Archuleta should be next up….
August 25th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
I thought the coverage looked pretty good so far this year.
Special Teams is a young man’s part of the game, and leaders from the past are often too old, slow and wise to do that kind of sh!t.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Archuletta hahahahahahahaha camp fodder
August 25th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Devery Henderson? we should be patient more cuts are gonna be made even if we wait till final cuts for a WR.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Big Daddy- yes the coverage has been better thus far
August 25th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I agree with Brien, I still have hope for JLH. If the kid can just learn not to field punts inside the 8 and to hold on to the ball and to run a crisp route we might have a playmaker…sounds like a lot to overcome, but those things are all coachable.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
I wonder if they’ll try Bush at FB some…
He’s got the size and the hands.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Larry very true……..an Andre Rison type of signing like 2000? I just dont want it to be joe horn getting signed after we see a bunch of crap get let go
August 25th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Higgins can catch the football……..he is gonna surprise people this year on offense
August 25th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Dakota- we gotta get Grove out of there. John Wade is just a better player……I have zero confidence in the guy. No bullshhhhhhhit articles about his strength will change my mind…..All Iknow is the scoring drive Russell had was with Wade out there
August 25th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Higgins is also going to step up as aWR….
August 25th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
ding
August 25th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Thec……really he will……i will keep saying it…..IN TODAY’S NFL YOU NEED A SMALL QUICK TYPE OF WR TO FIT INTO SMALLER AREAS……..and JLH is that guy…….He will be a faster Wes Welker for us this season as it progresses
August 25th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Bush at full back would be perfect. He is versatile enough and big enough. He is wasted talent if they only keep him as a third down back. Griffith is one of the best FB in the game though just not so good at blocking. I would have taken Chris Henry now.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Cutting Cooper must mean that Branch is healthy (enough), Rashad Baker isn’t badly hurt and Hiram Eugene is still pitching for a spot.
Glad to see the Irons farce has ended. Game Ready. Game Over.
Spires was always vulnerable - especially as Scott is a big improver.
Luke Lawton was the 6th ranked FB in 2004 - and he can also longsnap.
Marviel Underwood is an Oakland boy and 4th round pick by the Packers. Doing okay until, guess what, he did his ACL. Does anyone see a pattern emerging?
August 25th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Dude they hate on him because he gots mops for hands and makes poor decisions. Man the guy not only fielded a punt around the 5 yard line but he then ran into the endzone!! Last year he was a big mess!! Man can we get Tim Brown out of retirement. Could probably catch better than most guys on our roster but at least he wont muff punts. He’s good to at least waive his arm above his head and not run into the endzone!! Saturday’s game-although it looked bad in all honestly I do not believe it’s as bad as it seemed. Our game plan was basically go back to pass over and over again. Yeah Jamarcus didn’t have a lot of protection but we were so pass heavy that everyone could just point there ears down and come in every play in most of the first half. Our game is going to be pound the ball and mix in the pass to allow some play action.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Brien,
Personally, I don’t care for any of our centers…I just hope the job goes to the best man, be it Wade or Grove. I always tend to cheer on our own draft picks so I hope Grove wins the job.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Adios Coop! Was nice having him around, but the last two year’s he’s under performed and the roids issue didn’t help.
Looks like Branch is going to start stepping up.

Mbush as FB Rankin a 3rd RB have Bush and Mcfadden in the backfield at once i like it very true waste of talent as a 3rd RB
August 25th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Dakota- Wade has been part of extremely tough run games and doesnt give up many sacks nor gets overpowered
August 25th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Brien,
He might, but this preseason he has one for TD and one fumble to a TD. Not an even trade. I have more confidence in him becoming a good 3rd receiver than an above average return man.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Brien-I was thinking “Damn where’s an Andre Rison type of pick up when you need it” Hmmm can Joe Horn be our answer-past his prime definitely but he is serviceable and would not come at a steep price.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Branch made a heullva tackle on special teams in saturday……thats what they love
August 25th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I am disappointed that Jesse Boone hasn’t made a bigger impression in camp. An undrafted rookie who auditioned by pickup lights and took a swipe at Warren Sapp on his first day, Boone seemed ideal.
Never mind.
When are we ever going to get shot of John Bowie? Is he the worst draft pick in living memory?
August 25th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Zay I really dont want Horn but what the phuck are you gonna say if AL signs him? Shhhhhhiiit
August 25th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
and horn was on ESPN saying that he wants to go to a contending team and most dont think that is us except US
August 25th, 2008 at 2:58 pm

are there a limit for the IR list?
August 25th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Dakota that name is not allowed around here
August 25th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Well I do not prefer Horn-I would rather get Boldin but would have to give up too much to get him. Joe Horn is not that good at this point of his career where a “contender” will be dying to get him-he might just have to settle where someone will take him or he might just “Sprewell” his self out of the league.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Burgess better not be getting his butt pushed 5-6 yards downfield again

REPOST
The Black Clouds and Silver Linings
BC - The Raiders lost their 2nd game in a row.
SL - The Raiders outplayed SF (4 quarters), Tenn (4 qrts) and Arz (2 qtrs) in general this preseason. They did so when they were obviously not playing to win. The scores were meaningless.
BC - The starting offense has scored only 1 TD in roughly 6 quarters of play. The red zone offense has struggled greatly.
SL - Kiffin obviously tested red zone passing packages against Ariz when a run might have scored. Also, obvious regular season FG tries were not attempted in order to give the offense more work. Kiffin has obviously not opened up the playbook as evidenced by no Fades, Boots or othe red zone staples.
BC - Russell looks like a rookie at times. He sacked himself 2 times versus Arz. Once by holding the ball way too long and his last sack he was slipping down at the top of his drop before the D got there. He has forced passes into double coverage. He has yet to connect on any deep pass.
SL - JR may have auto-sacked twice but he escaped pressure many more times. He is mobile and if Oakland establishes the run, he can be deadly in play-action as his only TD drive showed. He had only 1 INT and NO fumbles which is huge. As Kiffin has preached, given the supporting cast he can be really good.
BC - ONeal. This injury is by far the worst for what the Raiders want to do.
SL - Griffith is a starter quality FB and does Wakefield want to add FB to his resume’?
BC - Carter. The #2 guy is a double problem because Curry is a better slot #3 type. It hurts 2 players.
SL - Despite the “castoff” label, the reality is guys like Carter would be bubble players on teams like NE, Indy, Cinn and so on. That means a cut buble player from a top team could easily come in and have the same potetial “castoff” Carter did.
BC - The O-line gave up 4 sacks and many pressures.
SL - Kiffin all but told the D in Arz “we’re passing” in the media and with empty backfield formations. He gave the D an advantage and told his o-line to handle it. Considering, they actually did well. This following a solid game gainst a top-tier Tenn D. With the threat of running plays, you can bet speed rushers will have to slow down or get gashed. Cable seems to be making a solid if not great line out of these guys. Provided they don’t have to pass every play - a big challenge for even the best lines in the NFL.
BC - W R’s
SL - Walker looked better and the RB and TE are solid. Remember, 1 solid WR is all that’s needed if you have a solid ground game and a receiving TE like Miller.
Defense Breakdown later.

August 25th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
We took Bowie at No 110, at 119 the Packers took OT Allen Barbre. Barbre looks like the creme de la creme, Bowie is probably the crud de la crud.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Warren Crapp= big talker and didnt do shhhhhhhhit in Oakland………and no 2006 didn’t impress me
August 25th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Would you trade for Ruvell Martin? He is nada but a 4th WR in GB
August 25th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Thec-
When Higgins steps up as a receiver he probably will draw a five yard offsides penalty.
Higgins may end up being a good return guy. I doubt he will be more than a mediocre receiver, similar to our last speedy guy, James Jett. I just don’t think he has receiver instincts. And Higgins doesn’t even come with the fast-sounding last name.
Just being small and fast doesn’t make you a good NFL receiver. Desean Jackson, like Higgins, also has a TD punt return this pre-season. He also has 16 receptions so far. That’s because he is a true receiver. Even if he starts all season, Higgins probably doesn’t catch more than 30 passes. If the Raiders don’t add any receivers, I would expect this season’s most productive WR’s to be Curry, Walker, Schilens and Watkins n that order.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Sapp should have never been on the field during obvious run plays. Last game against San Diego was what Warren was all about, pushed around all game until he shot the gap and forced a fumble on the handoff. One highlight play wrapped around tons of bad plays. In all fairness to Warren, other than maybe Burgess, nobody put more consistant pressure on the QB than Sapp did during his years here.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Tell me you guys didn’t like warren suplexing QB’s in 06… Haha that was funny stuff

Worst Raider 1st round picks in the last 20 years???
My list is as follows:
1. Patrick Bates 1993
2. Todd Marinovich 1991
3. Scott Davis 1988
4. Rickey Dudley 1996
5. Matt Stinchcomb 1999
6. Derrick Gibson 2001
7. Tyler Brayton 2003
8. Phillip Buchanon 2002
9. Robert Gallery 2004
August 25th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

August 25th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Speaking of Saint’s WRs. I understand that Lance Moore might be available. He is an RFA but apparantly hasn’t re-signed…and he has talent as both a WR and returner.
Does anybody if he is still available?
August 25th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Barbre should have been off the board in the 2nd, I was beyond pissed when we passed him.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
I have a guess that we will cut Lawton and sign this guy, we play the same run game as texans..

TEXANS WAIVE COOK AFTER ARREST
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 25, 2008, 6:11 p.m.
Last week Texans fullback Jameel Cook got arrested, and now he’s out of a job.
Cook, who was charged with marijuana possession, was placed on waivers today, the Houston Chronicle is reporting.
Cook played all 16 games for the Texans last season, but he has never been a regular starter. He serves as the latest reminder that if you’re in the NFL and you want to keep your job after getting arrested, you’d better be more than just a marginal, bottom-of-the-roster player.
The Chronicle reports that the Texans have re-signed fullback Jon Abbate, who was on their practice squad last season, to take Cook’s place on the roster.

I blame Lombardi - for everything.

I agree that we should make a trade for Devery Henderson. I said it few days ago that we should take a look at Devery Henderson as well as Chad Jackson of the Patriots. Though not as tall as Drew Carter, they’re about even on level of talent except Henderson is lightning fast. Chad Jackson appears to have better hands than both Henderson and Carter, but also had some injury issues, but also appears to be back to his full health. The question is do we wanna give up more future draft picks to obtain them becuase thats what those teams would probably ask for in return. YA KNOW?!

I was not concerned with Ramirez because he was a “Power Guy” and looks confused in space. He wouldn’t fit well with us and I think he’s out of place with the Lions. He would actually look good with the Cardinals or Steelers.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

August 25th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
SacRaider,
Man, leaving Seabass off the list was a difficult choice, same with Anthony Smith and Mo Collins, but I didn’t want the list to be more than 50% of all our 1st round draft picks over the past 20 years…that might depress some Al Davis sycophants around here, lol.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I mentioned before COW that they may want to give Wakefield a serious look at FB. He’s an experience blocker with a big body. I’m sure he can handle blitz pickups as they are much easier for RBs than Linemen. The only problem with Wakefield I can think of is he may not be much of an option out of the backfield. That could be the determining factor.
MB is no FB people. Thats a TFlores idea that needs to be squashed unless Kiffin has some trickery up his sleeves. I personally believe having MAllen at FB was not a good move. Its good to have him and Bo on the same field at the same time but really, MAllen was subpar at FB and so too would MB be. But don’t let me talk sense in ya’. Bush is no FB. Don’t ruin a gift before you unwrap it.

Okay the world will last another day.. I totally disagree about being a blessing in disguise.. Carter will be missed, he is tall and fast enough.. JLH is so small and fast..
Curry is best as slot and carter is best as #2, best mix ecer.. the only spot JLH can play is in the slot.. and Carters vacuum forces Curry up as #2..
this can nowhere be a blessing in disguise..

JLH seems new to the game of football. Low football IQ. Plays because he can run fast.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Why does Kiffin context offensive philosophy as a either, or, proposition. Either run or pass. You need to be able to do both.
If he’s going to play the same offensive football as last year, expect the same results.
Immature Coach, Immature Man.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

1) We have no clue who is gonna block for Fargas, DMac or Bush or who’s gonna catch passes from JRuss
2) We are in deep doo doo. Sorry about that S bomb earlier
August 25th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Run-up the score in a pre-season game????
How bout just score at all?
August 25th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
We don’t need anymore run stoppers. Kelly can handle the line by himself. Davis wouldn’t have gave him such a large contract if he wasn’t confident in Kelly’s abilities.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Ted we have our DTs……….thanks
August 25th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
justin griffitn can block he isnt just as punishing as oneal……..we wont be as bad as people think at WR
August 25th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I’ve seen Cables mark on the team. I haven’t seen anything from Kiffin.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
1) We have no clue who is gonna block for Fargas, DMac or Bush or who’s gonna catch passes from JRuss
The correct answers are: Justin Griffith and Zack Miller
Thanks for playing…
August 25th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
kell dont trip you shall ove the end result for us……saturday’s game was the best thing in the world aside from the injuries……they will come back on sept 8th with a chip on thier shoulders
August 25th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
I sure hope so, it kills me to watch them get gashed. Our DB’s should help,
Let’s put up 250 on the ground aginst the donkies
August 25th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Anyone recall Mr Cliff Branch, how BIG was he?Fast as f–k,its Heart that matters, all being aqual,Higgins will show UP,in a good way!
August 25th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
KK ….don’t take it so seriously man. Good teams loose preseason games all the time. Sometimes they even get blown out score wise. It happens every year. If you don’t think this offense could’ve scored you need to go back and watch. They just didn’t but available FGs were plenty. 2 TDs ..one by Miller and Curry were there. The O just didn’t cash in. Its preseason man. We are not going to be passing 90% of the time. Thats flat out crazy. But for a Scrimmage, it makes perfect sense.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Garth exactly
August 25th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
It seems to me Kiffin set it up this week with the passing game so the offensive line had no where to hide their skills or lack thereof and it gives them tape to work on their deficiencies.
Now we have an idea on who needs the most work and help. I think we all know the running game is pretty dialed in.
Exhibition season is a time to figure things out but also not show other teams anything that you’re working on for regular season.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Terdell Sands, Gerard Warren, Tommy Kelly, and William Joseph will play well……i cant wait when teams are in obvious pass downs do you know the lineup we have then?
August 25th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
I agree with Terp, keep Michael Bush away from FB.
We want to keep this kid long-term and the second we move him to FB his mind will be made up not to re-sign with us. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t Michael Bush only under contract for this season? If we want to keep him as a Raider, we will need to feed him the ball at HB a few times a game and find a way to move Fargas after this season. Michael Bush is the real deal, and we need to secure him long-term and moving him to FB will guarantee his departure in my opinion. The dude has always been THE MAN and now we are asking him to be a 3rd string RB, and he might handle that for one season, but I doubt he would embrace a move to the inglorious position of FB.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
I hope you are right. I’m 32 and can have memories of teams past to about the time I was 5-6 years old (Dokie Williams days). I can’t ever remember being this thin at WR. I hope you are right Brien. I remember telling a friend after we signed all these FA’s that if 50% of them panned out we would have done good-so Carter going down lowers the probability of going 50%.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Nooooooo…not coop…he’s one player that still plays with alot of heart!……JMO though…
August 25th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Dokie Williams was the business.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Burgess,Kelly, Warren,Edwards= dline
Morrison, Howard= lb unit
Aso,Hall,Routt,Wilson,Huff= secondary
teams have issues if they are in third and long…….expect many man many turnovers in 2008
turnovers will be jamracus 2nd best friend aside of the run game
August 25th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Coop was a f**k up. It was most likely his bone-head penalties during the preseason that cost him his job.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
bush as FB is ludicrous, he is not jerome bettis, a fast FB turned RB, he is a Big RB - period.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Good teams don’t loose however they do lose once in awhile!
August 25th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Edwards was a big pickup he will be beastly on pass downs

August 25th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Brien<——–willing to take bets right now……Raiders will at least be in the top 20 in run defense and as a team score 20 pts/game or more!!
August 25th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Don’t know if this stat is tru but heard on Radio this morning that if we post double digit losses it will be an NFL record for most season’s in a row of double digit losses-OUCH!! that one hurt.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
koolkell #86–
I totally agree about JLH. He just doesn’t seem to have “it” as a receiver. At least not yet.
It took about two games for rookies DeSean Jackson and the Niner’s Josh Morgan to show big potential as receivers. Higgins couldn’t beat out Mike Williams and Tim Dwight last year and hasn’t done much so far either. Maybe he’s just a slow study. He put up some numbrs at UTEP, but that’s the Mid American Conference. He is the definition of “work in progress”.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Armchair……kiffin blamed himself for that…..he refuse to put him in a winning situation…….please go check out the end of the year presser……thanks

Worst Raider 1st round picks in the last 20 years???
My list is as follows:
1. Patrick Bates 1993
2. Todd Marinovich 1991
3. Scott Davis 1988
4. Rickey Dudley 1996
5. Matt Stinchcomb 1999
6. Derrick Gibson 2001
7. Tyler Brayton 2003
8. Phillip Buchanon 2002
9. Robert Gallery 2004
*****
Damn, that’s an impressive list of 1st round busts…of the last 9 drafts alone (I chose 2000 to start because that’s when we started the 3 year run of division championships), only Asomugha has turned into a top level player–at least at this point.
Derrick Gibson, Phillip Buchanon, Napoleon Harris, and Fabian Washington are long gone, and both Seabass and Gallery clearly weren’t / aren’t worth 1st round money. This clearly has contributed to our current 5 year drought…the top picks have failed to deliver as advertised…
IMO, Huff needs to step it up to prove he’s worth 1st round money–and the move to FS should help. If not, he’ll join a long and growing list of secondary 1st round busts.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

August 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Trade Scenario: Andrew Walter and Walker for Boldin.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Raiders= start season off 2-0…….god(if there is one) blessed us with weak run defenses like denver and kc…and their olines aint that great
August 25th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
people wouldnt trade walter for a bag of peanuts
August 25th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Cooper will be re-signed at the begining of the season. Raiders wouldn’t pass up on a loyal player and a hard hitter.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
so are the Raiders at the 75 player limit now?
August 25th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Scott Davis was pretty good until he lost interest. I wouldn’t put him on that bust list.

Walter isn’t going anywhere. Don’t believe the hype, Walter IS giving J.Russell a run for his money in the passing game. Had we had an O Line and receivers that could hold…Walter would tear Defenses up. Don’t forget that Walter took hit after hit last year including getting his face smashed THIS preseason and got right back up into the game…..blood and all. In this era of whiney under performing “star” Qb’s…Walter is a diamond in the rough!
August 25th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
why would Cooper retire??
August 25th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Unfortunately, it is true…with all of the off season activity and the soft schedule, though, we shouldn’t break that record. As bad as the Arizona game showed our weaknesses, there are clubs that are EVEN WORSE…(KC, Baltimore, NYJ, Carolina, Miami, Atlanta).

I´m upset, I used to love Scott Davis and Anthony Smith, take them off your list.
Scott Davis had 27.5 sacks in his first 4 seasons, he was a very good young player when he decided to retire and pursue a business career.
Anthony Smith, as a rookie recorded 10.5 sacks in 91, 13 in 92 and 12.5 in 93, all in all he averaged 8 sacks a year during 7 seasons as a Raider.

People in here are still delusional about trading a RB to AZ for Boldin.
Listen for the last time what they do NOT need is another RB or QB.
If we had a DB or LB we were willing to trade then maybe they would talk to us. But their needs are not RB and QB.

If Javon Walker can pull his weight the Drew Carter injury will not be that bad. It’s not like Carter was a top WR in this league before he came here anyway. He is fringe talent with an upside. Shouldn’t be too hard to replace and the season is not lost without him. Scottie Vines who played with the Lions wouldn’t be a bad choice and would come cheap.

Now put yourself in their shoes….4-5 days of gruelling practice…then the big game where you take on more hits and bruises…..only to start it all back up on tuesday! Then add to that the wear and tear these players already have on their bodies from high school and college football…..and ask yourself IF YOU WOULDN’T WANT TO BE ON SOMETHING TO GET BY!! For the money these players are getting….i’d take the roids too!

August 25th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Excellent points, Brien. I’m just saying let’s show that “we can walk before we start to run.” I only know what WE have, and we have questions too:
1. Will Kelly justify the big contract and come up big?
2. Will Sands show up? (for a guy 6-7 and 335, he sure played like the invisible man last year–I know he was mourning the loss of his mom, but he could have played inspired football dedicated to her too).
3. Other than Burgess, who else will apply pressure from the ends?
4. Will Morrison and Howard step up against the run? And who the hell is willing to take the SSLB position? (Kiff often voiced his frustration over the lack of a standout player at that position).
And that’s just the defense…

OakGlenn, either Kiffin has a phenominal season or he gets canned. Theres no middle ground for him.
8-8, 7-9, 6-10, 5-11, 4-12 wont keep his job, do you get it now? If we dont go 10 wins or better & win the division I believe Kiffin is toast.
OakGlenn, did you hit your head when you were a lil kid or are you handicapped? I sholdnt have to explain simple things more than once to you.
August 25th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Actually Desert based on what we have seen so far I can answer some of that:
1) Kelly has played REALLY WELL this preseason. Obviously he conditioning is not there, but coming off a serious injury, he has an excuse.
2) Sands also has played surprisingly well. They left him in the zona “fartin’ hole” game to get his conditioning up. He dominated late, which is what you want to see out of pro players.
3) Kalimba Edwards was playing like he was shot out of a cannnon on Saturday nite. I think he had one sack and or one forced fumble. Trevor Scott played a few series with the ones and did OK. Looks like we have some hope there.
4) Regarding Morrison and Howard……uhh, I’ll take a pass on answering that.
August 25th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Desert yeah well maybe Castillo doesnt take his roids that week….Harris is not a good pass protector that’s why the 49ers got rid of him i mean he excelled more as a RT but Cable is God as everyone says

You guys I would be VERY SURPRISED if the Raiders didn’t have Fargas and Rhodes start the first half of the season. Of course we all want Darren and Mike to start game 1 of the preseason, but I would be VERY suprised if they didn’t use this as basically a red shirt year for Darren.
August 25th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I can’t imagine a team with an offensive line comprised of Harris-Gallery-Grove-Carlisle-Green scoring alot of points, or having a winning season.
This unit flat out sucks. Might be worst pass-protecting line in the entire NFL. Couple the lack of ability to protect the QB with a substandard set of WR’s and we have a strictly one dimensional attack.
It’s gonna be run-run and Jamarcus either throwing a dump off or quick hitter–or running for his life–or getting sacked.
Offensive schemes and Tom Cable can only do so much to cover up the deficiencies of this unit.
The offensive line will prevent the Raiders from making significant enough progress this season to make the playoffs.
What pisses me off about this situation, is that we knew this unit sucked and besides picking up Wade we did virtually nothing to improve the personnel in this area of vital need.
With a quality offensive line we actually might be able to put up a reasonable amount of points - even with Russell’s inexperience and questionable WR corps.
August 25th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
FANG(MR) when the Raiders win games this year will you be that much closer to suicide?
August 25th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Mistabrown #248–
If the Raiders go 8-8 this season and Kiffin gets fired, he will ride off into the sunset as one happy cowboy. He will collect the final $2 million on his contract and everyone will think he did a pretty good job going 8-8 with what he had this year. He will be free of Al Davis and get a nice job as head coach of a college football team.

You would cut them both but it doesn’t make the team better. What the hell kind of statement is that?????? Besides you contradict yourself from 3 seconds earlier because Bowie was never cut he was IR’d. GOD THIS GUY IS A MORON!!!!!!

Cooper WAS a leader before he was busted for roids.
Look at Merriman, that knee doesn’t feel so good without the roids, does it?
August 25th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
The only thing hurt about John Bowie is Al Davis’ ego. He drafted this guy with the Randy Moss pick and doesn’t want to look like a fool by having to cut him, so he puts him on IR.
August 25th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Bates was a bad pick but i would have to put Nick Bell and Leon Bender on the list. Bender because he was the last pick of 1st round and he OD’d in his agents bathroom the day he signed his contract, thus counting against the cap.

August 25th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Mistabrown, how is MRS. Brown doing?
August 25th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
That is at least one reason why Kiff is speaking his mind…he knows he can’t quit, he has to GET FIRED to still be able to collect the remainder of his contract. I see it as a win-win:
1. Al will fire Kiff if he doesn’t go at least 8-8, and will be able to slide in yet another coach. (Lofton?)
2. Kiff will now be able to land a HC position at some D1 school.
3. The Raider Nation will have been spared a double digit loss season for the 6th year in a row, and hopefully will be able to build on this for years to come.
Ideally, I’d like to see Kiff get an extension if he gets to at least .500 (which would double last year’s win total, and will be nothing to sneeze at–Al will have to see that as a VAST improvement, especially from 2-14!!!) Al would be able to claim credit, as would Kiff.
It’s probably wishful thinking…oh well.

What was stopping them from bringing in other players? Nothing…its a mute point and Kiffin should shut his piehole about the depth and coach.
Our starting LB’s are KM, TH, Ricky Brown or Robert Thomas in the 3rd spot. That leaves S Williams and either RT or RB as backups.

I just heard on the radio that the SacBee is about to buy-out 50% of it’s contracts. I wonder if that will effect Jason Jones?
August 25th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Al Davis is man enough to put up with Kiffin’s jabs at him. Al is probably even willing to put up with Kiffin’s insubordination in the name of continuity if the Raids show progress.
However, Al will not tolerate crappy game plans, poor clock management, or a squad not buying into or motivated by Kiffin.
I’m not impressed with Kiffin. Haven’t been since his opening press conference when he was hired. I’ve seen evidence Kiff’s clock management sucks this pre-season, and some really questionable decisions late in the final Charger game last year. His game planning and evaluation of personnel is still up for debate. Don’t know how the squad itself feels about Kiffin. I suspect he isn’t well liked but that’s not a requirement to be a good head coach.
One thing Kiffin appears to have done is surround himself with a competent staff of Knapp and Cable. I think Lofton is Al’s man and Kiffin’s likely successor. Can’t see Kiff wearing the silver and black after this season, and it’s pretty likely he wont make it through the season.

RaiderFan #352,
I totally agree. And I haven’t seen any signs of a personal mark he’s put on the team other than rollouts and dump offs.

Trade for Deverey Henderson or Robert Meachem. Play Bush at FB better to have him on the field than just on 3rd down. And he can catch the ball too and is a bruiser

Yea, cooper had to go. The thing I like about Kiffen is he doesn’t keep dead weight players around, just wish he had more say in who he brought in. Just think of all those players he got rid of his first season that were drawing paychecks every year cause they were favorites of Al Davis.
Kiffen is still inexperienced coach, and I a not too enthusiastic about his lack of confidence in the young receivers. Play them damnit! Develop the young talent around you.
Kiffen also needs to hand over play calling to the OC cause he sucks at it, He may have been good at it when he was with USC, but trying to coach and call plays at the same time is very different.
