Simmons replaces Otis
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 at 12:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Linebacker Shane Simmons, who was with the Raiders through organized team activities, was signed to the roster because of a knee injury suffered by strongside linebacker Robert Thomas.
No. 4 quarterback Jeff Otis was waived to make room for Simmons.
Thomas’ injury is not believed to be serious, but he is one of several players who will be sitting out the Seahawks game Friday night.
With Ricky Brown winning the strongside linebacker position, Thomas is no lock to make the 53-man roster. It would appear Thomas, Sam Williams or perhaps both are in jeopardy of being cut when teams reduce rosters Saturday.
As the Raiders went through drills before the team session Wednesday, Javon Walker, who was excused Tuesday for personal reasons, was back at practice and was catching slant passes from JaMarcus Russell during drills.
Those who did not appear to be practicing incldued Thomas, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (ankle), Rashad Baker (ankle) and safety Hiram Eugene (hip).
In another development, Fred Wakefield is on the move again. He donned a black jersey and was going through drills with the defensive line. Wakefield has been a backup offensive lineman in recent weeks.
More to come later . . .

Sorry to say, but this might be a blessing in disguise. Thomas was always good enough to make the roster and is versatile, but we’ve given him a chance to “win” the SLB spot for 3 years now, and couldn’t even take it away from Sam Williams. We should have an injury settlement with him and just move on.

Wakefield should be used as a blocking tight end. maybe we could even throw a ball his way once or twice.

This is the major problem I have with this team. First, we have a owner who wants to win, but personally I don’t think he understands that the game has really pasted him by. Now I know there will be fans that say he is still the most knowledgeable owner in the NFL when if comes to football knowledge. Well that might be true, but the decisions he have made and continue to make don’t put us in the best position to win. Not now or in the future. I was very optimistic when he hired Kiffin and I really expected him to take his hands off this team like he did when Gruden first came to Oakland. Well he hasn’t and probable won’t until me are morning his death. Sorry but true. If the old man wants to win allow the young coach to put us in the best possible position to perform…. There is no reason we should have so many starter nick up at this stage of preseason. The old man should have brought in more players so our starters wouldn’t be so tired going in to the season opener. Also we need to know when to get rid of players. We hang onto james (jett) until he really was james (air bus), then we move tyler brayton to so many positions, he didn’t know if he was on offense or defense. We need to do exactly what the bengals have done with rudy johnson. Put Vargas on the market for a legit
WR. He has more up side and younger than johnson, he comes a little cheaper, and he is more versatile. AL is pasted his prime, and he needs to focus on a successors instead of messing with his young coach who may(is)looking for an exit strategy out Oakland. This is the major problem I have with this team.
