Looking toward the final 53

Maybe I’ve been brainwashed by listening to Lane Kiffin bemoan the inadequacies of his roster, but the hardest part about breaking down the Raiders’ final 53 is finding that many players you want to keep, rather than worrying about which ones are getting away.
A rundown of how things stand heading into Friday night’s game in Seattle:
QUARTERBACKS (keep 2 or 3) — JaMarcus Russell, Andrew Walter, Marques Tuiasosopo.
The only question is whether the Raiders choose to go with two or three quarterbacks, meaning Tuiasosopo’s spot is not assured.
Interesting note or maybe nothing at all _ after Jeff Otis was cut Wednesday, his locker was not cleaned out as is often the case. Could be they were simply late in getting to it, or it could be he may be returning to the practice squad.
The only reason he would be on the practice squad is if the Raiders were going with two quarterbacks.
RUNNING BACKS (keep 5 or 6) — RB Justin Fargas, FB Justin Griffith, RB Darren McFadden, RB Michael Bush, FB Luke Lawton, FB Marcel Reece, RB Louis Rankin, RB Adimchinobe Echemandu.
Fargas, Griffith, McFadden and Bush are etched in stone. Griffith needs help at fullback, and Kiffin made it clear Bush is not an option as a lead blocker. That gives Lawton a shot, should he impress, or a search of the waiver wire after final cuts.
Rankin is this season’s Echemandu, only this time there isn’t a spot available due to a suspension as was the case last year with Dominic Rhodes.
WIDE RECEIVERS (keep 5 or 6) — SE Javon Walker, FL Ronald Curry, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Todd Watkins, Arman Shields, Chaz Schillens, Jonathan Holland, Chris McFoy.
Unless the Raiders sign a veteran receiver, and they would probably hold off on that until after Week 1 to avoid paying a guaranteed salary to a vested veteran, then Higgins may be the best bet to be the No. 3 receiver. Watkins is deserving of the fourth spot based on camp performance. Shields will have to show a lot to avoid being placed on injured reserve but could be too talented to slip through to the practice squad without being claimed. Schilens has the upper hand over Holland and McFoy because of his physicality and status as an ‘08 draft pick.
TIGHT ENDS (Keep 2 or 3) — Zach Miller, John Madsen, Tony Stewart, Darrell Strong, Chris Wagner.
After Miller, Madsen might be the most sure-handed receiver on the team. Stewart provides a steady veteran presence and is a solid blocker. The Raiders like Strong’s toughness _ he bounced back quickly from a separated shoulder _ but practice squad is his best bet. An outside chance the Raiders could go with just Miller and Madsen provided Fred Wakefield makes the team, making available for blocking duty as a tight end when necessary.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (keep 8 or 9) — LT Kwame Harris, LG Robert Gallery, C Jake Grove, RG Cooper Carlisle, RT Cornell Green, T Seth Wand, T-G Paul McQuistan, C-G Chris Morris, C-G John Wade, T Mario Henderson, T-G Fred Wakefield, G Brandon Rodd, G-C Jesse Boone.
Beyond the five starters, it’s a tough call. Wand is the only pure tackle with considerable experience. Henderson’s play improved of late and his scholarship could last another year. Interesting to see if both Morris and Wade are retained. Morris has experience as a guard, Wade does not. But if Grove’s knee falters or he is unable to deal with the elite nose tackles, Wade would be the better option to finish out the season. Wakefield’s versatility gives him a shot, while McQuistan is the primary left side backup.
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (keep 8 or 9) — LE Derrick Burgess, DT Tommy Kelly, DT Gerard Warren, RE Jay Richardson, DE Kalimba Edwards, DT Terdell Sands, DE Trevor Scott, DT Josh Shaw, DT William Joseph, DE Derrick Gray, DE Greyson Gunheim.
The most interesting call is what to do with sixth-round draft pick Scott, who is actually less than 250 pounds and may not be ready to contribute as a pass rusher this year. Practice squad would be ideal, but that means subjecting him to waivers. Shaw would seem to have the edge on Joseph based on where he plays in the rotation and production. Gray and Gunheim are long shots.
LINEBACKERS (keep 5 or 6) – SLB Ricky Brown, MLB Kirk Morrison, WLB Thomas Howard, Isaiah Ekejiuba, Jon Alston, Robert Thomas, Sam Williams, Adam Archuleta.
Ekejiuba’s special teams play makes him an iron-clad fourth linebacker to go along with the starters. Thomas’ injury and losing out to Brown as the strong side starter puts him at risk. There is a feeling among some defensive coaches that Williams simply doesn’t have it. If he is retained, that call is coming straight from the top. Alston’s speed and special teams skill may give him the edge over Archuleta.
DEFENSIVE BACKS (keep 8 or 9) – CB Nnamdi Asomugha, SS Gibril Wilson, FS Michael Huff, CB DeAngelo Hall, CB Stanford Routt, CB Chris Johnson, S Tyvon Branch, S Rashad Baker, S Hiram Eugene, CB Darrick Brown, CB-S Marviel Underwood, CB Nick Sanchez, CB Michael Waddell, CB-S Nate Lyles.
Beyond the starters, Routt, Johnson and Branch are secure, bringing the total to seven. Sanchez, Waddell and Brown are probably out the door pending something spectacular in Seattle, with Brown a practice squad possibility. That leaves probably two spots divided between Eugene, Underwood and Lyles.
SPECIALISTS _ PK Sebastian Janikowski, P Shane Lechler, LS Jon Condo. Others: P-PK Glenn Pakulak.
Nothing to see here. The only way Pakulak sticks is if Lechler isn’t ready.
(Note: The Raiders held a brief walkthrough in Alameda before traveling to Seattle today).

Scott is no less a situational player than Clemons. He is at worst a light DE or a heavy LB, I have read in at least four articles or mags that we will be hard pressed to replace the 8 sacks from the depatrted Clemons.

Is Wakefield really being looked at to provide depth at TE, OL and DL or is this just a camp fodder type of thing? I haven’t seen a player filling in at this many positions since the 60’s.

Two questions:
I look at the depth chart and can figure out who the second string players who will most likely start in the last preseason game are. It gets murky when we get to the third quarter. Wakefield playing DB???
Secondly, how much does a practice squad player actually make? Do they have to get a second job as a UPS deliveryman to make ends meet?

I think that it is wonderful, at least in my world that race has beome a non-issue. It wasn’t until I got the latest Lindy’s picture bio that I found out that Herm Edwards was not white. I was ranking on him strictly based upon the fact that he was coaching the queefs.

I think there are some tough decisions in there. Kiffin is my guy and all, but I have to call him out on this issue again. Louis Rankin, and echamandu are good football players that will get oppertunities somewhere.
Either Chaz schillens or shields will get the ax and the Raiders will try to slip one of them on the practice sqaud or hids sheilds on ir because of his injury. Shields may even be able to help the team this year.
If wade gets the axe he will get an oppertunity somewhere, and he has proven he can be a solid player. On the defensive line scott is on the bubble, but he has shown flashes . At lb robert thomas is a solid back up and can play in this league
I count 4 players and two prospects. if schillens, rankin, wade,scott and thomas are cut i would feel like i had to make some very tough decisions. Those players all have something to contribute or potential that can be tapped. kiffin better not utter he is cutting players that are not that good because he would be lying and just taking shots at Al just to grand stand. Some of us have even questioned the quick exit for Hartwell. I would hate to see Rankin in denver or scott in kc. I am curios to here some of your thoughts on this.

Looks like Denvers wide receiver will only miss the Oakland game,..hate to say this but I dont see us beating Denver,…only chance we have if we pass no more then 12 times,..run for about 300 yards,..no turnovers,..get 3 turnovers,…teams are going to blitz all year, Russell will be sacked all year long,..and when San Diego comes to town they might break a record for sacks in a game,…not one good receiver and Harris at left tackle makes for a long year,…keeping it real.

I agree with some of your points. Let’s talk about the OL. I believe there may be one player they like to acquire before the regular season starts.
We are short a back-up tackle that can play either side.
The Raiders as most NFL teams dress up 8-9 OL for a game, those back-ups have to play multiple positions.
I don’t know how they can keep Wade, as you said Morris can play in a pinch guard or center.
They were trying to groom Henderson to play either tackle position, he seems more comfortable on the left, but his play may require him to play right tackle.
There he would get help from a tight end and chips from the backs.
McQ is better suited for the RT position, his footwork is slow and he is not athletic enough for a guard, so he really can play only RT, which means Henderson has to play LT.
I saw McQ last year play a decent RT when Green got hurt, what worrys me is Henderson at LT.
I believe Wade just will not help if he can’t play guard.

dell i am not sure about being short a back up tackle that can play either side. Mcquistain is listed as the back up lt right now, and we all saw him do a solid job last year after the titan game. He started a rt the 4 game strecth when the o line gave up no sacks or 1 sack something like that. I know he is not fast enough to start or whatever, but he can play both in my opinion. I haven’t seen him at left, but that is where they have him listed. He sounds like the guy. He has proven to be a solid contributer b d when called on.

Practice squad players should not need to get another job (unless they live in this overpriced state (CA)).
The minimum that teams can pay practice squad players is almost $90k/yr. That is about $200K less than the minimum that they have to pay for active rookies (currently $285K I believe) but it is still a very solid paycheck for 17 weeks of work.
