Postgame wrap

Quick hits from the Raiders’ 23-16 loss to close out the preseason Friday night at Qwest Field:
– Lane Kiffin was happy about the unseen part of the scoreboard _ Seahawks 23, Raiders 16, injuries 0.
“A couple of guys had real little things,” Kiffin said. “In a regular-season game, they would have kept playing.”
This wasn’t a regular-season game by any stretch. It was barely a game at all. Kiffin tried a 66-yard field goal just to give Sebastian Janikowski a chance. He ran the ball late in the game when normally it would have been a hurry-up situation.
Then he left with two time outs in his pocket and figured it was time to start hashing out the 53-man roster with Al Davis and the coaching staff.
Every year there are a few surprises.
“I’ve seen plenty of people that came in here and played well that got cut,” Stanford Routt said Thursday. “I’ve seen people who didn’t play well make the team. You can’t really gauge what’s going to happen.
Kiffin had yet to sort everything out.
“There are so many things that happened in there. Some of our receivers had some shots. Andrew (Walter) did some good things,” Kiffin said.
– Wide receiver Chaz Schilens had three receptons for 49 yards, including a 28-yard game, seemed nervous about waiting for news of the final 53.
“On special teams I didn’t have a very good game, and sometimes that’s what makes the team for some guys,” Schilens said. “It’s new to me. I have no idea. I felt like I did what I could.”
– Todd Watkins misplayed what could have been a 34-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Walter, an error that will haunt him throughout the night.
“I felt the ball was comig over my outside shoulder and I didn’t want to turn, so I opened up and I’ve just got to keep going,” Watkins said. He recovered later with a one-handed catch off a deflection by a Seattle defender.
A standout since camp opened, Watkins generally feels positive about what he achieved.
“There are little things that are going to bother me and wish I could have done different, but for the most part I’m happy about the way things have gone,” Watkins said.
– The fullback spot which opened up when Oren O’Neal was lost for the season with a knee injury had two worthy competitors agianst Seattle in Luke Lawton, a waiver claim from Philadelphia, and Marcel Reece, a converted receiver.
Lawton caught four passes for 31 yards with a long of 12, and had a few nice lead blocks, although he didn’t block as well as he would have liked. Reece scored Oakland’s lone touchdown on a 25-yard checkdown pass from Marques Tuiasosopo.
“The game plan was pretty vanilla, so they got me up to speed pretty fast,” Lawton said. “There’s some pressure, but I enjoy pressure. The way I look at it is to just go out and hit the first thing you see. I’ve been around five years, and think I’ve got a pretty good feel about when you’re going to make it and when you’re not.”
Lawton said he’d rather not divulge his guess on making the roster, but he had an optimistic smile.
Reece was optimistic as well.
“I definitely gave it my best shot, working my butt off trying to learn a new position, try to get everhything done and be an athlete,” Reece said. “I just hope the coaches see what I’m capable of and keep me around.”
As for the touchdown, Reece said, “I was just happy to make a play. I was going through end zone withdrawls.”
– Details will be hashed out throughout the night and until the 1 p.m. deadline Saturday, but Kiffin said he thinks the Raiders will probably keep three quarterbacks _ meaning Tuiasosopo would stick.
“Most likely (two quarterbacks) is not the direction we’re going to go,” Kiffin said.
– Seattle quarterback Seneca Wallace was 21 of 30 for 255 yards against an Oakland defense that included newcomers Nate Lyles and Marviel Underwood along with Nick Sanchez, a free agent signed a couple of weeks ago.
“It seemed like they found our new guys real quick,” Kiffin said. “It seemed like every time they turned up, it was against one of those guys we just signed this week, missing a tackle or not making a play.”
– Rookie running back Darren McFadden had four carries for 50 yards including bursts of 24 and 23 yards.
“It was good to see him and get him out of there before anything happened to him,” Kiffin said.
Running back Michael Bush had 12 carries for 42 yards.
– Johnnie Lee Higgins broke a kickoff return for 58 yards, did not return a punt caught one pass for 21 yards.
“I feel good out there,” Higgins said. “That’s a big step from last year, when I was always feeling like I was still in college, thinking, ‘I’ve got to make a play, get things rolling.’ Now I feel real confident.”
– Defensive end Trevor Scott, the sixth-round pick from Buffalo, had his most extensive playing time and most of the evening had trouble extracating himself from veteran Floyd “Pork Chop” Womack.
His one big moment came on what looked to be a blindside sack of Wallace, only to be called for getting a head start and being offsides.
– The Raiders played most of the game with their second-team offensive line, with only John Wade coming out of the game, with Chris Morris moving from right guard to center and Jesse Boone finishing at right guard.

Glory
Harris, Greene, McQuistan, Wakefield & possibly Henderson, if there’s room. I say Wakefield only because he seems to be able to play whatever position he’s needed at.
August 29th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
With 700+ potential prospects becoming available tomorrow, I have to believe we can do some upgrading on many of our back-up positions. And, that includes the tackle position.
August 29th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
ok, 6th.
August 30th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Trevor Scott learnt more in one game against Pork Chop than he probably has learnt all camp - and it will do him the world of good.
That is what this Raider team lacks - a solid base of battle-hardened veterans like Pork Chop.
Our starting 25 players are probably better than average. Our back-up 28 players are largely unproven and of questionable talent. It matters less who is cut today, it matters more who is added to the 53 before we meet the Broncos.
So far, no obvious talents have been cut by other teams. Patience and vigilence.

I just posted this on the last one but now there’s a new one so I’m reposting.
This game really helped Schillens, Lawton, Higgins, and Scott. Shields made a play but he looked inconsistent and could probably sneak onto the practice squad. Ideally we’d put Scott on the practice squad as well, give him a year of coaching and the chance to add some weight because he got eaten up a lot of the time as well, but since we cut spires and will carry 4 DE’s, there is one spot open after Burgess, Richardson, and Edwards. If we see a decent vet get cut tomorrow, we may pick him up for that 4th spot - we really do need a guy that can stuff the run and hold the point of attack for that 4th spot because we have nobody that can do that except for Richardson (Burges and Edwards are both Speed guys, as is scott at this stage of his career).
Anyway, DMAC looked great, those two 20+ yard runs are exactly what our running game and offense needs - our passing game will be conservative this year, so we need some explosive plays out of DMAC to make our offense a little more dynamic. Schillens really showed up tonight and deserves a spot. I laughed at the pick after the draft, because he seemed like another size/speed Al Davis project, and his college highlights at SDSU just consisted of him running go routes past weak competition in the WAC. Now that he’s gotten his chance, he’s looking good, and I bet a lot of that has to do with Lofton. You can really see his technique - getting his head turned around looking for the ball right after he makes his break, getting out of bounds twice at the end of the half, and making plays running across the middle of the field. Good Stuff. He may be our #3 WR by the bye week, if not sooner. He also has the speed and size to develop into a #1 WR, and possibly a #2 this season, which would allow us to move Curry to #3 where his skill in finding holes against zone coverage is really effective for us. We’ll have to see if any vet WR become available, because other than Walker and Curry, nobody else has done anything in this league which is why losing Carter was so bad for us.
All with a grain of salt, because it was just the preseason, but schillens was better than Watkins, Shields, Holland, Higgins, and whoever else was out there tonight, and he looked really fluid.

I waited all night for the first stupid post from BHP, and it didn’t take that long.
Post #50 on the previous blog, Youngesters he wants to keep
Well where to begin Archeuleta ISN’T a YOUNGESTER he’s been in the league for 5 years now.
As for Darrick Brown, Brown is a track star not a football player, Marcel Reece is a 5th stringer on most teams.
For a self called Expert you aren’t really that good at evaulating players.
How did our 3rd down RB Darren McFadden do tonight in your expert opinion? And how about looking again at Mario Henderson, who cost us at least 3 overthrows and 3 underthrows while he was consistantley getting run over and around by 2nd, 3rd and 4th string Seahawk Defensive Ends.
Let me guess BHP, Henderson is the next sure fire pro bowl tackle for the Raiders. Wow would we be in serious serious troube with you running this team, or evaulating talent. After all you think DMC is a 3rd down back, and the 3rd best RB on the roster. Wow!
Question for you how did the UW do the past few seasons with stars like Reese and Rankin on their team?
My guess is that Henderson (a Davis project, read scholarship player) will be out of the league within 3 years never achieving more then our last great project OT Chad Slaughter and probably a lot less then about 99.9% of backup lineman in the NFL today.
August 30th, 2008 at 12:29 am
I took my 5 year old to the game tonight. Spent a lot of money to get 4th row-30 yard line, visitors side just to see a bunch of 2nd and 3rd stringers. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT!
Tony Gonzales (The Raiders photographer) and another guy in a suit and smelling of a good cigars saw my 5 year old and me. My boy shook his hand and the guy gave us field passes to hang out on the side lines for the 2 hour pregame.
It was amazing! I think I was the 5 year old out there. Burgess signed my hat and Tony Stewart gave my kid one of his receiving gloves. Followed by Tony Stewart’s wife asking if she could get a picture with my boy and the glove her husband gave him.
Today the Raiders made my 5 year old a fan for life!
Sorry Jerry, I was looking for you to give you that beer I promised, but I didn’t see you.

Ryan,
That was the post of the summer. I was worried that the Raiders were losing contact with the Nation - that Al’s distance signalled a colder attitude. Your post gives me hope that the team and the fans can go forward united.
And that is a lot more important than finding a half decent Right Tackle.
And it was also good to see Tony Stewart making some plays. Perhaps your son brought him some luck?
August 30th, 2008 at 1:10 am
did anybody catch the anouncers comments about al davis having to make a lot od descions tonite & that he had talked to ‘mr davis’ & mr davis said he already had most of it figured out? no mention of kiffin at all in that particular discussuion.
not exact words but basically what was said. also have t otake into account that those guys are definite al davis schills, but i still thought it was worth bringing up
August 30th, 2008 at 1:43 am
at #12 I don’t think Henderson did THAT bad, actually.
He wasn’t being bulled over, buy you’re right about him struggling with edge rushes.
He just gives the DE a love tap on his way to Walter.
But, for most of the game he was serviceable enough. It’s true, he was only playing against third stringers,, but it’s better than I thought he could do.
Andrew Walter had a good night, and he only had one man protecting his blind-side. Well, beside the occasional TEs, FBs, and RBs.
Do I think Mario Henderson deserves to be on an NFL roster? NO
But, we don’t have a lit of choice here do we.
Because, as bad as Henderson was, Seth Wand was WORSE!
August 30th, 2008 at 4:31 am
cut sam williams hes a joke. keep simmons in one game he made more plays than williams has all pre season. why is al deciding the final 53.input yes final descion should be left up to the coaching staff.

August 30th, 2008 at 6:06 am
WOW - just watched most of the game …in the 3Q now and the tackling is Horrific!! I don’t care if they are backups. This sht reflects coaching imho. You just don’t tackle that bad and take THAT many bad angles - its just unreal. Unless they really are just that bad as Kiffin alludes to.
We are STILL looking for a FB - Lawton may be able to catch a ball but his blocking is TERRIBLE!! Boy OO will be sorely missed cause one of the pillars of this offense is “I” formation. I hope Griffith can remain healthy throughout the year, but Griffith isn’t the blocking FB OO was.
Madsen may get cut. Don’t be shocked to see it. I don’t know what happened ..maybe too much weight or something ..but he can’t catch worth a lick now which was his bread & butter as a TE.
August 30th, 2008 at 6:14 am
Ekijubah’s tackling was god-awful. Sam Williams is slow so sending him on a blitz is useless and he displays bad tackling. Jon Alston - another bad tackler! And these are our backup LBs? Are you kidding me? This team needs an overhaul on the back-end. When we face injuries in the season we’re going to be in trouble.
I just don’t know how they are going to replace OO. You would think finding someone who is a bad ass blocker wouldn’t be that difficult.

We need to pick up some players after cut downs. Only solution I can see. Cut Williams its time!!! Agree Lawton is not that great of a blocker. Actually got in Mcfaddens way dancing around on the ten.
August 30th, 2008 at 6:33 am
Ugh. How much better did Seneca Wallace look than Walter? Not even close. There is absolutely no depth on this team. How many second-teamers could step in and start? Almost no one. Who plays left tackle if Harris gets hurt (or can’t do the job)? Henderson? Wand? McQuistan? Kwame may be the most important player on the team. There’s no depth on the defensive line. The receivers, as a group, are terrible. The Raiders need to stay healthy, with a top-5 running game and a dominant secondary, to have a shot at 7-9. The truth hurts…
August 30th, 2008 at 6:50 am
This team has not had enough starters to say they had any depth to begin with. Every team is concerned about depth. It will take another year to straighten out the depth issues at this point so its not worth worrying about. We all know what they are at this phase of the rebuilding project.
August 30th, 2008 at 6:51 am
LOL, to be pretty in 1984, is a real asset to be vice president, the more I think about McCains candidate, it seems like he has shot himself in the foot..
McCain attacks Obama for not having any international experience, but McCain is pretty hollow himself in that department, and this Sarah Palin looks more and more as a front, no essence.. to be a prisoner in a foreign country isn’t actually “foreign experience” either..
I like Biden, seems like he knows what he talks about, the energy, the vision behind Obamas views seems to me the thing your country needs right now..
Well thats how your favorite fraud, name nanny and European bro’ sees it from the outside, looking in..
August 30th, 2008 at 6:52 am
They won’t start picking up any veterans good enough to step right in and play until after week one.
August 30th, 2008 at 6:56 am
Seneca Wallace has been in that system at least 5 years. Walter has only been in this system one. Cant fault him for the lack of continuity. If we could get a coach and a system and stick with it more than a year, and i mean a real coach not a sleep and eat type setup that would help.
August 30th, 2008 at 6:58 am
LMN the speaches you see on European t.v. are not reality. The reality is Obama and McCain are basically identical on foreign policy and are very close on most everything else. Neither one of them will last more than one term because nothing will change.
August 30th, 2008 at 6:58 am
It does make since to wait til after week one to pick up players because of salary implications. Prob is you may/may not miss out on some possible gems from really deep teams.

I hope for you, and the rest of the world, you are wrong. I still think though they might be alike, the way Obama thinks and speak are huge change from what we had the last 8 years..
its funny, so many americans are embarrassed by Bill Clinton, here he is the last american hero =) he could have s3x with martians and we would still think what he did was the best an american president ever did..
That said, I didn’t live when Nixon was Prez, but I think history isn’t fair to him, he did somethings you never thought could happpen (albeit watergate) the Chinese marked was opened by him and so on..

August 30th, 2008 at 7:09 am
By my calculations we have more than 22 players that can play/start.
Depth/Injuries is something that the whole league is having to deal with. They should increase the roster size fron 53 to 67. why 67? Keep it an odd number.

Henderson is clearly a project. Was when we drafted him. The question is how long do we wait? This year, year 2, and the beginning of year 2 a that, is not the time to cut the kid.
I agree LMN that I thought he would be playing on the right side. maybe they are hastening his development by throwing him in the LT fire. But he clearly doesn’t have the “feet”, at this time, to handle the moves and counters that are being thrown his way. He does fine against bull rush scenarios, but is vulnerable against speed. He ends up leaning, which is the WORST thing you can do as an LT.
I say get him in the ring or on the basketball court to develop his feet.

George W. Bush was passing through an airplane terminal and he noticed an old man in a long white robe, with a long white beard, long white hair and carrying two stone tablets in his arms. He approached the man and asked reverently, “Aren’t you Moses?” But the man wouldn’t listen to him and continued walking. George asked him again, ”Aren’t you Moses?” The old man continued ignoring him, even turning his back on little Bush. George grabs the man’s arm, looks him right in the eye and insists, “Answer me — Aren’t you Moses?” The man replies, “I’m not saying a thing! The last time I spoke to a Bush I ended up roaming the desert for 40 years!”

_____________________________________________________
as I got it, Luke Lawton could receive the ball, but wasn’t that good at blocking… and o’neal was our top blocker.. what Luke Lawton does is what Griffith does, Griffith is just so much better..

SLD,
good point with regards to this team still rebuilding. People act like you can turnover a roster in one year. The Raiders have a solid group of starters. They have little to any depth, so injuries will keep this team from being a playoff team: so what.
Most new regimes are not ready to seriously compete until year three; unless they start with a talented team like mike tomiln got in Pittsburg.
The lack of depth is a big issue, but I like some of the young talent.
Schillens, Branch and Trevor Scott were all good pick ups. Lawton is a decent fb.
I like Morris and McQuistain on the the bench because both players are versatile: can cover all 5 spots if needed between the two of them. Henderson is a project who shows flashes of good and horrible.
We have no depth at TE. If miller goes down, we will start sinking fast.
We are great at rb.
The wr have some young talent: Shields, Schillens, JLH and Watkins can all play football.
The D line is about average: Kalimba and Burgess can both rush the passer. Richardson is decent, and I like Scott because he seems like he grows by leaps and bounds every time I see him play. Terdell, Warren and Kelly will have to hold it down in the middle.
We have no depth at lb outside of Robert Thomas. Alston is all right. I thought Shane Simmons was the best of the lot on the field last night.
The db’s are very good: we all know that.Tyvon Branch, Kris Johnson, and Stanford Route add some nice depth: we are shambles after that.
I say Archuleta stays. He seemed to be around the ball last night and he can add some versatility in the back seven. He is not a starter by any stretch of the imagination, but I would rather have him on the field, then Alston, Williams, Lyles, Underwood, sanchez.

I don’t see any Seabass bashing …
LOL!
August 30th, 2008 at 7:52 am
I thought Lawton was a factor on several nice runs we had. He did look as if he just joined the team on a few plays though.
He seems a little bigger than Griffith, but I didn’t necessariy see any OO in him.
Did his job is what I’d say.

Lawton looked good as a safety valve with a couple of nice catches out of the backfield.

This whole “back 7″ concept disturbs me. When Captain Kirk said that last night, I wanted to jump through that screen and shake that dude!
LBs are part of the FRONT 7!
FRONT 7!!!!!
You need to have a FRONT 7 mentality from your LBs, especially our MLB.
Damn IT!

Last one, then back to football:
Last summer, the President and Mrs. Clinton were vacationing in their home state of Arkansas. On a venture one day, they stopped at a service station to fill up the car with gas. It seemed that the owner of the station was once Hillary’s high school love. They exchanged hellos, and went on their way. As they were driving on to their destination, Bill put his arm around Hillary and said, “Well, honey, if you had stayed with him, you would be the wife of a service station owner today.” She smirked and replied, “No, if I had stayed with him, he would be President of the United States.”

I wish we could see Kiffin and AL makeing the roster decisions that would be some funny isht.
August 30th, 2008 at 8:02 am
I hope our selections are based on what guys did on the field. I want to see Schilens in the mix. I also want to see all the Lofton bashers that were spewing all this he needs to do this or he hasnt done that come back from hibernation. Our young WR’s are a bright spot IMO and Lofton needs to get some of that
credit.
August 30th, 2008 at 8:02 am
I say we drop Scott and grab Jerome McDougle if the Eagles drop him.
Eagles have 7 good DE’s and McDougle is at the bottom of the list and pretty damn good.

August 30th, 2008 at 8:05 am
No. 81 (chaz) should make the team. He is still green but looks better than the rest of scrubs out there. We still need receivers, TE and wide outs. my guess is that DMac will see a lot of time in the slot and catching balls out of the back field. .
August 30th, 2008 at 8:06 am
Thec,
Wassup my man? Just rollin outta the rack?
I don’t think too many guys are going to make the team off of yesterday’s game. It’s going to be based on what they’ve done in practice, the OTA’s, the weight room, film room, etc.
1 case in point, didn’t we all think Chris Johnson was the worst corner on the team last preseason? Dude made the team, and actually looks decent this year.
August 30th, 2008 at 8:07 am
Cut Scott ????
I think you might be on an island with that one.
August 30th, 2008 at 8:09 am
I live in Seattle and was at this game.
First, two things people asked me to watch:
-Our first team defense. Obviously, they didn’t play though.
-Justin Forsett against our defense. Forsett fumbled on the first punt, but looked pretty solid as a RB. He broke several direct-hit tackles including one from Josh Shaw which was otherwise an awesome play by Shaw, torching his man off the line, getting in front of the pulling guard, and hitting Forsett in the numbers, but he just slid off. On the next play Forsett put a nice move on CB Chris Johnson.
Anyway, about OUR team:
-I was not a supported of picking McFadden (and I still think the rest of our team is full of holes at other positions that could have been addressed), but there was no question, he looked awesome. Good second effort on several runs and he was able to make good gains after breaking free. Also on a pass to FB Lawton, McFadden came across and hit DT Red Bryant and sent Bryant reeling literally 5 yards backwards and onto the ground!
-By contrast I was unimpressed by Michael Bush. I didn’t see any power and he didn’t look smooth as a runner at all. It looked like he needed a clear path for his first 5 or 6 steps to get a head of steam before being effective.
-Walter looked awful to start the first half. He had Watkins WIDE open for a would-be 50 yard TD and overthrew him by quite a bit. In fairness to Walter, Watkins’ attempt to adjust to the ball was horribly awkward and ineffective and a great WR might have been able to make a spectacular catch even though Watkins did not come close. Walter also missed Johnnie Lee Higgins open on a slant-out route at the pylon on 3rd & goal from the 3, should have been an easy throw but he threw it out of bounds. The following play was the muffed field goal/interception by Lechler. Also several times we threw on 3rd & short and both times I remember, Walter held on to the ball too long and got sacked, fumbling one of them. Walter’s play fakes were impressive and very effective. Unfortunately twice Walter had all kinds of room to run but got nothing of it because of his slowness. One was a 3 yard gain that most QBs would have taken for 10+. Another was a hold on the WR because Walter took so long to get there and did not set up his block well with the angle, it could have been a 25 yard TD. Walter did redeem himself nicely with a good two-minute drill to end the half with a field goal. Good patience to use the sidelines, use our three timeouts, then hit one nice longer pass to Schilens to get into FG range. My overall impression of Walter was a guy who reads the field pretty well, has good zip and accuracy when he can fire the ball on a line, but is not comfortable throwing the ball over defenders or into traffic. The one exception to the traffic thing was a great throw to Arman Shields who had not yet gotten past the DB on the sideline when the ball was thrown, but made a spectacular one-hand catch on the other side of the DB. The ball got there too fast for the DB to turn around and the timing and placement of the throw was incredible.
-Speaking of Shields I think he will be cut. Dropped an easy one early on and it looked so bad, he might as well have been intentionally batting the ball away. On another one he ran an out, Walter led him too far to the sideline, and I saw a coach yelling at Shields, so he may have missed his assignment on the play. His sideline catch above was nice redemption but probably not enough. Later that drive he missed a tough but catchable ball on third down to kill the drive.
-Schilens looked good. Got banged up a little bit but ran well. Made a nice diving catch in traffic the first time he was thrown too. Didn’t see much of Higgins but between Schilens, Watkins, and Shields, only Schilens impressed IMO.
-Defensively I was very disappointed. They made TJ Duckett look awesome for goodness sake.
-Nate Lyles and Marviel Underwood took some pretty bad angles to give up runs.
-Coverage struggled, some of it was scheme I think as guys were getting wide open. TEs were getting free in medium-depth outside zones a bunch. One another play the Hawks had 2WR to the left, we had one CB up on the outside WR and the inside WR was shaded by a LB and apparently covered by a safety further back. The Hawks put the outside WR in motion and snapped the ball shortly after. The outside CB stayed on the outside with the other WR, this left no DBs nearby to pick up the motion WR who dragged across the field for a ridiculously easy 16 yard gain.
-No pass rush to speak of throughout the game. Trevor Scott jumped the snap just a moment too early for the only hit on a QB that I recall.
-Some pretty good flow to the ball and occassional penetration for run plays, but poor tackling as a team.
-Janikowski looked awesome.
-I felt bad for Glenn Pakulak, probably his final game, didn’t get to do much. After Lechler was done in the 3rd quarter, it looked like we would punt from the Hawks 49 yard line, but instead attempted a 66 yard field goal. (Right down the middle but a few yards short, would have been good from 60.) Later Pakulak was warming up to kick off when we had 2nd & goal at the 2. Instead we lost yards, went for it on 4th & 5, failed, and didn’t get to kick off.
-At the end Marcel Reece made the play of the night, catching a short pass from Tuiasosopo and making a great move on a DB to get the outside but stay in bounds, then another nice move to the inside to beat another DB, then plowed into the end zone for a 25 yard score. (Since we were then low on time and attempted an onside kick, Pakulak was again out of luck!)

Or do we draft a QB this year?
August 30th, 2008 at 8:22 am
New York- post #25
Seneca Wallace has two more years of NFL experience than Walter, and he has had the good fortune of playing under the same Mike Holmgren system for all that time. Wallace can run that system in his sleep.
Walter has played for a different system every year, and only saw playing time in Shell’s RUN-RUN-SACK system. Plus you said it yourself ” the receivers suck”
Walter is decent, he just has to wait his turn behind the next coming of John Elway.

I totally agree, McQuistan though, I wouldn’t be surprised or sad if he was let go..
regarding Lawton, I think we’ll keep him in lack of better, but he was hired to be a blocking FB, not a receiving FB, Griffith tops him in every topic.. that said, they maybe threw the ball to him, to see if he could receive in game-like envrionment, because they knew how he blocks.. againg I’m just guessing because I didn’t actually SEE the game..
O’neal wasn’t great receiving, but he blocked the air out of the best defenders.. thats what we need! its pretty siple we need a replacement of him, not a vanilla edition of Griffith..

McQ was a 3rd round pick for a reason. He’s already head and shoulders better than Henderson, so why would you want him gone?
I thought he played really well at RT last year when Green went down, and was kinda surprised that he wasn’t the guy going into this season.
I’m a McQ fan, obviously. This guy needs to be on the field. I think/hope they have him pegged to take over for CC in the next year or 2. Grove, Gallery, and McQ on the inside will be really formidable. Now if we can just get some reliable guys on the outside. Maybe Harris will be that guy. Maybe Henderson steps up and takes the RT job this year or next?

thats fair enough, I know it isn’t quite crystal =)
Again, I judge Jani on what he has done, not what he might do in some game, “you know if somebody can kick a 77yd FG - its JANI” well I don’t care, I wan’t a kicker to be as close as automatic.. everytime JANI steps up to the ball I think, now what will go wrong..
McCown, well fist we didn’t waste a 1st round pick on him, he is so-so cheap. But what really got me rooting for him, was he knew he would be backup to Jammy and he embraced it, he was the one who started to fire up under the Offense.. not that he made special plays, but it was with him, the offense started to believe in them selves again.. to me that is priceless. After so many years in sewers..

This was a good draft for QB’s. We could have picked up a really good back up. I was hoping we would have take woodson. He is cerebral enough to run the O in the event that JRUSS goes down. August 30th, 2008 at 8:49 am
Tyvon Branch played very well again, on that fumbled punt return he had the coverage beaten again and was in the returner´s face as he was about to make the catch, it likely had a lot to do with Forsett fumbling that ball. He´s something to watch as a gunner.
Later on a 3rd and 1 Branch stopped Duckett behind the line but could not wrap him up properly with that huge cast on his hand and did a decent job running with Ben Obomanu who was slated to play the slot for Seattle but apparently is lost for the season.
Seattle played their starting C, RG and RT on the 1st Quarter and it showed, the Raiders had Nate Lyles, who was signed off the street 2 days ago starting at SS and it showed too.
Trevor Scott has come a long way for a guy who has played DE for 2 years at a Division I-AA School, he had his hands full against Womack but you have to expect that at this stage of his career.
I noticed he does a good job when asked to drop in coverage, something he´s done a few times in pre-season, he´s got an interesting skill set and we need to keep him IMO.

I just can’t see Williams sticking, expecially is Rob Thomas’ injury isn’t too bad.
Plenty of so called Al guys have gotten their walking papers since Kiffin has been here. Ricky Brown has taken Sam Williams spot on the roster.
This whole Al guy theory is laffs to me. How can some of the guys be Al guys, and some be Kiffin’s guys? Is it Kiffin who drafts, or Al? If it’s Al, then aren’t all of the guys Al’s?
August 30th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Only similarity between Scott and Brayton is the #91.
Where is that Brayton kid these days anyway. Worst thing that ever happened to that guy was him being moved from DT to DE, and then to LB for crying out loud. I think he would’ve been more than servicelable at DT, but of course he couldn’t play his natural position with King Sapp on the squad.

August 30th, 2008 at 9:07 am
AW must hate Mario Henderson, it seems like Mario has to give up an awful sack before settling in and doing a somewhat decent job.
Madsen hasn´t shown anything in games, I don´t know about practice but I would rather keep Wakefield as the 3rd TE-emergency Lineman and Reece as a utility player.
I was looking at a college preview the other day and they were talking about Washington´s QB Loker and the guy catching his passes in all the highlights was Reece, another interesting player who needs a little polishing IMO.
August 30th, 2008 at 9:11 am
I agree with the Schilens comments–he looks like the type of guy who could be a star in this league at some point. Also glad to see JLH appears to have stabilized somewhat. Was surprised to see Shields is bigger and more fluid looking than the college highlights I’d seen. He made one nice catch but I still couldn’t imagine pushing him ahead of Schilens. Still, this looks like a good draft class.
Walter has, admittedly, had some tough breaks, but I disappointed by his lack of fire. He just never made the play when they needed one. Russell hasn’t been terribly accurate, but you can tell he’s a gamer. He heats up. I’m afraid Walter is always room temperature. Tui is a reckless gunslinger who puts his receivers’ lives on the line.
Mario needs to go. Even if he only lets the DE get an untouched, full-speed shot at the back of his QB once per game it’s too many.
August 30th, 2008 at 9:11 am
is the 1 o’clock roster deadline eastern or pacific time?
August 30th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Brayton is in Carolina.
Scott played 1/3 of his snaps as a lb. Kalimba Edwards also played some hybrid de/lb out there in the first qaurter. I think the Raiders getting ready to use a lot of 3-4 this season and move burgess and edwards around.
I expexct to see Richardson kelly, warren burgess, edwards, howard and Morrison on the field together. I can’t wait.
August 30th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Marley, what up man. I really like the Idea of us developing these young guys…. we may have a sleeper cell amongst this group. Most were down on JLH but i beleive he is going to do really well.
Cant wait to see the JRUSS to WALKER connect, and it all starts next moday night……

“Only similarity between Scott and Brayton is the #91.”
yeah, I still think we would have been easier on Brayton if had been a 4th round pick.. that said and that Scott still is a rookie and he is already as good (bad) as Brayton, is okay.. If he gets 10-15 lbs on him, he’ll be better..

I’m pulling for Watkins to make the 53 man. He looks to be the quickest off of the line and runs decent routes. He screwed up last night for sure but that first quarter diving catch was awesome until the defender landed on his out-stretched arms and knocked the ball away.
One things for sure, we are shallow at MOST positions. Yikes!! I looking for a few big surprises today.

KIFFIN is scheduled to have a conference call at 3:30 pacific time to discuss cuts…

Yeah, we´re still rebuilding here, we need to give some of these players the time to develop.
Kidseven
I noticed Underwood making a few nice tackles as well, much better than the other guy Lyles, I read that Underwood led GB in ST tackles as a rookie so maybe he has a shot to make the practice squad based on his ST skills.

Marley, in your opinion rate our young WR’s.. Also throw reece in that mix, value your opinion want to know what ya thinking Bro.

August 30th, 2008 at 9:28 am
JRUSS got to see it and will be looking for it. WALKER knew it and will be looking to do it. The D from the donkeys are expecting it but cant stop it…….
August 30th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Holland even looked good yesterday against the scrubs..
August 30th, 2008 at 9:31 am
I stated at least a month ago,we look more like a 3-4 than a 4-3,but that was when we still had Hartwell tho.Acquiring Edwards,Scott, will make us very flexible.Opposing OCs wont know if we’re bring 5 or 3!!!
August 30th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Bob Marley,
Good to hear you saw the same thing with Underwood. Unless he’s piss poor in coverage, I’d be keeping him around. It was refreshing to see a Raider making sure tackles. After the second time he swept in to make a solo stop I leaned toward the television trying to figure out who he was. Very unfamiliar.
August 30th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Thec,
I agree on Holland. Seems like we have whole stable of WRs that have decent skills and lots of potential. I was bummed that few if any players have really owned the preseason. I keep waiting to a guy to step up and demand a roster spot. I never saw it. So far it’s been mostly one juggling catch followed by a blown route, a stellar block followed by an offsides, etc.

It´s really hard to tell, they didn´t even caught that many balls in pre-season, they say Watkins looks great in practice but he doesn´t do much in games.
I like JLH and Schilens as 4th and 5th, I´m hoping we get a veteran for the 3rd spot and place Watkins on Practice Squad and Shields on IR.
But Watkins seems expendable to me, I´d rather keep Reece on Practice Squad because of his versatility.
August 30th, 2008 at 9:45 am
See you guys later.
August 30th, 2008 at 9:45 am
I agree 100% Bob

Harw..
No worries.. some can some can’t here, there isn’t any logic behind it..
August 30th, 2008 at 10:18 am
from what Ive read our 2nd or 3rd defence wasnt so good.I had hoped M.Lopez at 6-1,329lbs would be a quick study and contribute this year.By his size alone I hoped he would plug the middle, like days of old I hoped we had found a diamond in the rough like BIG AL had done so many times before.Relagated 2 the practice squad;still I hope he learns very fast,we need the depth and depth was a thing any of us discussed prior 2 this game.Kiff did exellent by evaluating this part of roster. Now we all know exactly what we’re working with.Stretching never seemed so important, till now
August 30th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Can u believe that these mediots acutally get paid for th regurgitated, same ole, non original stuff?
August 30th, 2008 at 10:21 am
They funny thing is if Kiffin is so honest all of the sudden then why did he say that Ryan wanted to resign but Kiffin said he sent him to Al Davis, who basically talked him into staying. I guess Kiffin is fibbing about Davis everytime he speaks?
August 30th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Lopez has a roster exemption because he is from Mexico.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:26 am
WHat?!
August 30th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Each team gets one roster exemption any player they sign from another country.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:39 am
wow thats cool SLD
August 30th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Pittsburgh Steelers are shoppoing Max Starks…..Their Tackle around!!
That guy would fit in GREAT with the Raiders!!!
August 30th, 2008 at 10:46 am

August 30th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Can you imagine what the Rookies and free agent rookies are going thru right about now????
Nerve Wrecking!!!!
The last things they want to hear………. “Hey #91 coach wants to see you, bring your’e playbook”!!!
WoW that sucks!!!
August 30th, 2008 at 10:50 am
I can’t rememeber who said Kiffin only had a 2 year deal its 3 years with 2 option years. He will be here next year and that will be his make or break year unless the Raiders get worse than 4-12 this year. I think they will be 8-8.

Sith…
Forget about it dude!!
He’s outta here!!
James Lofton and Rob Ryan will be manning the ship next season!!
Kiffin cant stand Al Davis…and vice versa!!
This partership will dissolve after this season….Kiffin is only auditioning for next season with another team….College or pro!!!
August 30th, 2008 at 10:54 am
I disagree.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Sith…
I’ll bet you a Pepsi…
Kiffin will not be here next season…..
GUARANTEED!!!
August 30th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Kiffin has one huge fan in his corner, a 60 million dollar franchise quarterback.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:55 am
I’ll take that bet.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:56 am
I hope i’m wrong….
But I know i’m not!!!
He wants no part of Al!!!
Not any more!!
August 30th, 2008 at 10:58 am
You guys are missing the point w/ Lawton …he sucks as a lead blocker. He’s no where near OO’s level and he’s not as good as Griffith. Thats what you NEED if the power “I” is a pillar of your offense.
So what if he can catch. Griffith can do that! WE NEED A MAULER OUT THERE!!
The damn guy left his RB high-n-dry on a number of runs! The damn guy blocks like Crockett!!
August 30th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Chris “Beanie” Wells carried off the field for the Buckeyes. Severe ankle injury.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Yeah yeah then Kiffin should not be the coach right now if you believe what sells the news, whatever.
August 30th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Sith…
Did you know that Kiffin attempted to FIRE R. Ryan……And Al didi not let him!!
Al told hi…..”You can FIRE Ryan….But first sign this 2yr extension”…..And Kiffin refused…….Forcing Al to keep R. Ryan as D-Coordinator!!
This has been well documented!!
Al davis also hired Lofton with out Kiffins input!!
This has also been documented!!
He’s a gonner I tell you!!
August 30th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Kiffin is not auditioning for another team. Kiffin wants to be a Raider. Everyone does, because the Radiers are the greatest organization in the world. He just has to mind his p’s and q’s and do what the great Al Davis tells him to, otherwise his opportunity will be ruined, and he won’t get to be part of our dynasty. The choice is his.
August 30th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Hey Terrapin Lawton was springing both Mcfadden and Bush, not sure what game you were watching.
August 30th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Hey Raider Glory explain Kiffin’s comments about Ryan then, like Ryan wanting to resign but Kiffin would not accept it and told him to go talk to Al. They both said there was never anything between them, what are you guys smoking today?
August 30th, 2008 at 11:02 am
When Al Davis told Kiffin to quit,,, and Kiffin refused!!
The writing was on the wall!!
This is Kiffins last season with the silver & black!!
August 30th, 2008 at 11:02 am
I don’t understand Lane Kiffin. Who wouldn’t want to work for the greatest owner in all of sports, and sponge in all of the great knowledge? I know I would. I would do it for free. And, to see all of this complaining Kiffin is doing…Just boggles me.
August 30th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Kiffin has been critical of Griffith’s blocking all of camp and preseason.
