Walker looked OK Sunday
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, September 1st, 2008 at 4:54 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The only thing different to the untrained eye about Javon Walker Sunday was his uniform number.
The NFL Network’s Adam Schefter is reporting Walker is questionable with a hamstring injury, meaning there is a 50-50 chance he won’t face the Denver Broncos in the Monday night opener on Sept. 8.
Here is what transpired Sunday.
Note: This post previously erroneously stated the practice session in question took place on Monday.
Practice was moved up by an hour, with a only a few reporters, including MediaNews beat writer Steve Corkran, managing to make it on time after getting the phone call about the change.
On the practice field, a No. 84 was observed running routes at full speed and making hard cuts under the watchful eye of coach Lane Kiffin. Soon afterward, the media window ended.
Reporters made it back to the media room and wondered aloud as to why Arman Shields, put on injured reserve Saturday, would be practicing with the team. Players on I.R. cannot practice with the team.
It was also noted that No. 17 _ Walker _ was not at practice.
Kiffin cleared things up after practice. It was Walker wearing No. 84, which he had worn in both Green Bay and Denver. He had taken his old number and was the one running patterns for Kiffin before team sessions began.
There was no mention of a hamstring injury and Walker was not named among players who missed practice.
After practice, Walker was chatty and in good spirits in front of his locker, discussing his number change and looking forward to playing the opener against his former team, even as he downplayed the revenge factor.
If he had sustained a hamstring injury serious enough to put him at risk for the opener, chances are he would have been in treatment or at least had his leg wrapped. Instead, he was in the locker room, no sign of a limp or discomfort.
From what I’ve been able to discern, Walker had enough of a twinge in his hamstring to be checked out, but that it’s not considered to be serious in terms of missing the opener.
Assuming he got treatment today and will again Tuesday, we’ll have a better idea on Wednesday.
With the imminent signing of Ashley Lelie and a reported visit with former Patriots second-round draft pick Chad Jackson scheduled for Tuesday, the wide receiver position is still evolving.

o.k. then.

Whats up with Chad Jackson? Ashley Leilie is garbage. It is hard to stretch the field when you are always nursing a bad hanstring: on top of that the dude drops too many passes. I saw some good things from Schillens. I would be pissed to see him moved out for Lelie.

No NFL Monday Night Football tonight. Good PAc-10 SEC matchup on ESPN though. UCLA VS Tennessee. Don’t like the Bruins much but they need to represent the PAC-10 against those SEC goobers.
September 1st, 2008 at 5:17 pm
If 1 of 2 between Lelie and Jackson work out, our WR squad could be improved. They better be able to catch the heaters!!
Too bad Carter got hurt.

Lelie is a great WR. WIde runner. he lines up wide and runs.. can’t catch so don’t call him a reciever.
half back, full back, quarterbak and wide runner

Chad Jackson never had a chance at the Pats - he was always 5th on the depth chart. He was one of the 3 highest rated WRs in the draft - the kid has talent.
Just compare his college record against Watkins, Schilens or Higgins. Jackson was a class above the others
___________________________________________________
I agree we should bring him in, because he got to be better than what we got..
THAT SAID, he was stuck on the depth chart as #5 for a reason, furtermore look at who he was behind.. Reche Caldwell and Justin McCareins, Doug Gabrial for a very short while and other WR’s we right now wouldn’t consider as an upgrade..
September 1st, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Hey Jamarcus, remember all those guys (Carter, Shields, Schilens, Holland) you threw passes to in training camp? Well, forget about them and come over here and meet Ashley Lelie and Chad Jackson. You’ll like them once you get to know them.

but, please tell me how it works
September 1st, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Oh, sorry, guys, looks like this one’s been up for a while.
Anyhow, good news. I’ve been telling everyone here that Walker is back in form. AD’s words of wisdom have set in, and Walker is ready to play. I’m really excited, more so than I’ve ever been. It’s premature to think Super Bowl, but conference championship is not out of reach. Who better than us?

You think he told Kiff “I’ll bring them in when they are worth bring them in. Now shut up and coach.”
September 1st, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Jim..
and your point is?
My point is, Raiders are located in Cali, so therefor the cali teams get my vote!
September 1st, 2008 at 5:55 pm
The only scoring Notre Dame does anymore is by the priests.
September 1st, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Yeh, that’s it, Hell Raiders. Al’s so tough. Lane is so afraid of him. We all are. Al gives us nightmares.
September 1st, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Damn, Chad Jackson is available?
September 1st, 2008 at 5:59 pm
The whole league is intimidated by Al and his tough talk, Hell Raidersss.. That, and his record in the past 5 years. He just sends chills. Lane Kiffin’s biggest nightmare is for Al to fire him and pay out his contract, then go back to USC where he’ll get to have input again, work in a winning environment, and probably get a bigger salary. Al’s got Lane by the balls. You said it, bud. Sure…
September 1st, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Lane’s job is to shut up and coach… and then of course take the blame when Al’s acquisitions can’t catch, block, or tackle. No wonder coaches are tripping over each other to work in Oakland. No wonder we win every single year!

909Raider—great point on the previous thread about these moves being orchestrated while Al was at a funeral. Of course, Kiffin probably had no input regarding a FB and WR (and another visit scheduled) being signed in his absence…..must’ve been Lofton!
Thank you Jerry for confirming the obvious. Adam Schefter and his TMZ reports have once again been proven FALSE. Look at his track record since Mike Lombardi has left. That was his “source close to the team.” Now he announces Walker as questionable before the injury reports are even announced?
He also reported from the Combine that agents were telling their clients to steer clear of Oakland becuase it was such a mess and that we wouldn’t be able to sign any impact players.
I guess $$$ talks a little louder than Schefter…

But you’d better win Monday Nite!

“Players on IR cannot practice with the team.”
Didn’t stop the Patriots.
That was part of the testimony by Walsh that was never pursued. If they wanted to punish them they should’ve taken the higher 1st round pick.
Who knows if Walkers all right? I read a story on RNS that said he might have a knee injury but that was DAYS ago.
I think he was back at practice the next day, so its hard to tell whats what. I think Jerry probably knows how hard it is to figure the Raiders out!

lelie is a good replacement for walker if he is healthy, and if chad jackson proves his worht then I guess he is a good #4..I for one am not sold on jackson yet, but I will have faith in our staff,I am sure lofton can help turn him into the player we need..I still see us using mcfadden as a wr in some sets, i am very anxious to see how kiff utilizes mcfadden..

Who knows if Walker is alright? Ummmmmm, if he wasn’t, I doubt he would be “running routes at full speed and making hard cuts.” Or that he would be “chatty and in good spirits in front of his locker, discussing his number change and looking forward to playing the opener against his former team, even as he downplayed the revenge factor.”
As Jerry mentioned, why wasn’t he in the training room getting treatment?
Jerry and Corkran were there and saw it. I’ll take their word and track record over Schefter’s any day.

Whomever called the plays the other night for the Raiders did a much better job than the normal guy.
I don’t know if Kiffin/Knapp usually calls the plays, or if its Davis from his jet in the box…
My point is, whomever called the plays the other night, in game 4 of the pre-season….was a different person.
Whoever it was did a better job than the usual guy…
That’s all I’m gonna say right now…
Sorry I forgot more about football than anyone on the Raider staff even knows!

Kiffin doesn’t have total control over the roster, but he and his staff do have plenty of input. Not that Al ALWAYS agrees…
Or maybe Kwame Harris was an Al Davis “scholarship” pick?
The record for coaches with total control over the roster is poor. Dennis Green, Mike Holmgren, Mike Nolan, Bill Parcells, Mike Shanahan, etc….and that short list includes successful coaches who had led teams to Super Bowl wins as strictly coaches.
I suppose completely handing over the reigns to a 32-year-old with no prior experience is better though.

You’re a friggin’ joke. I’m very new here and don’t know anything about anybody outside of the postings I’ve read, but I would say it’s a safe bet that you are nothing but a troll.

September 1st, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Lelie AND Jackson?
This is pretty telling that the Raiders feel the biggest area of need the is actually WR.
Not even sure if there were any better WR out there, so for the Raiders to go after the top 2 speed WR on the market is telling.
K Robinson is a bonehead move away from being suspended AGAIN! Why would you want that headache?
Joe Horn is in the mold of Walker and Curry, and half as fast.
Is Terry Glenn healthy? If so, yeah I could see him over Lelie. I guess. Probably the same guy though, each with a different set of concerns.
September 1st, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Like I said….the Raiders need me, I don’t need them///OR YOU…
September 1st, 2008 at 7:22 pm
I don’t know why everyone is so worried about WR’s.
The number one thing that we need to do is make sure that we give Mcfadden every opportunity to take it to the house as many times as possible. That can mean pass receptions of the short variety and him turning them into TD’s or runs etc..
Of course we need some WR play, especially the sure handed that can keep drives alive, but deep threats are not a big part of Kiff’s offense yet anyway.
I know technically Fargas is still our starter, but I am going to be very disappointed if D. McFadden doesn’t get just as many touches if not more. This is the one guy on our Offense that can change the game!
September 1st, 2008 at 7:22 pm
well thats fine, then you can leave, because us fans doesn’t need you either..

September 1st, 2008 at 7:29 pm
I think you answered your own ? EC.
The Raiders are addressing speed at WR so that opposing teams can’t just line 8 guys up against our run game. Walker and Curry are possesion type recs who were not going to neccesarily threaten down field. Could they make the occasional deep play? Sure. Carter was supposed to be a speed threat to stretch the field. His injury was big. It seems like the Raiders feel Schillens and Watkins fit the same mold as Curry and Walker. You need that deep threat to open up the running game even more.
Lelie and Jackson apparently are two guys who fit the speed mold the Raiders are looking for at WR.

Their visit wasn’t that big impression so i don’t remember all the details. I remember the Romanians replacing the Canadians in Aphgan (mispelled purposely). They were very memorable because of what they did (i will not nark them out)! They were a VERY fun group! BUt they were serious when needed.
I think people are misled by the term “royal”. It’s not a special unit group.

Freedom takes an immense amount of self discipline. It is not advised for everyone. Some people thrive (and i’m not knocking anyone) in settings with fewer choices. The more choices afforded the more self discipline and restraint is required. We all want it but all can’t handle it.
I remember going from basic training to technical school and my leader saying, “You’re going to get more freedom now. You’re getting more rope… use to climb or use to hang yourself!”
that was 23 years ago!
September 1st, 2008 at 7:38 pm
jhill… they improved immensely from 2006-7. We’ll see. I have confidence in them except LT. But where do you get a good one?
September 1st, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I think we have two decent prospects at LT, Jim. Henderson looks much better than I initially thought after rewatching this last game. He had some bad plays, but he had a lot of really good ones. He surely will be active this year for all games, unlike last year. Hopefully getting thrown into the fire at LT is some type of master plan to get him ready for RT duty.
RT is the concern. Green has maybe one year left? Seth Wand is NOT the answer as the backup.

I like getting the “royal” treatment if you know what I mean. Henderson wouldn’t make 31 other rosters. When you guys are celebrating Ashlie Lelie it is worse than I thought.
September 1st, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Wow
I can’t believe we can pick up Liele and Jackson for next to nothing. Oh those Broncos are so good at the Draft arent they. They picked A. Liele I think with the 18th overall pick a few years back!
Having these two early to develop is great in that we will be running a lot at first and evolve over the season into more throwing.

Always so positive…. Henderson was a developmental pick with a 3rd round choice - a known gamble. Liele was a 1st round pick expected to be at least a strong #2 deep threat…. With Lofton as a coach it is great we are getting some different bodies in here to look at. There is some real possible upside here considering we have been think at WR since Moss left. We need to bring people in to see how they fit with the system and JR. I really like this move! Our biggest weakness the OL though remains vulnerable. I am not a big C. Green fan and I am not sure about Harris but hopefully he will develop. The DL is also a question mark especially at DT… We are TK’s ligament away from being horrible at the point of attack. So here is some negativity to try to get along…
September 1st, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Thec - Are his drops more of a recent phenomenon or has he had these problems his whole career? I don’t know really - just asking. Cause you could’ve looked at Moss and said the same thing - that he’s a dropper based on his work in Oakland. But that wouldn’t be accurate.
SF was sht to be frank. They couldn’t keep there QB off the ground. And we all know Alex Smith is not the 2nd coming of Montana. In ATL; I don’t know what was up with that - different system though.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:06 pm
I saw that ranking FIRE. You know the Denver ranking is baloney. Still, the Pats are ranked behind the Raiders even after all those SBs. In contrast, for the Raiders to rank that high after 5 years of losing says a lot about the fans. Turn around the franchise and we’ll be back in the top 5 for sure.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Terrapin: Lelie couldn’t catch in Denver, Atl, or SF. It wasn’t the route running .. it was catching the ball. He can’t catch, period. Remember Jett? Jett looks like a gold glove comparitively speaking.
LMN: Yes, i do care. I enjoy history.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:08 pm

In Atlanta they had Vick - not your best touch thrower by any means… In SF well it was kind of like Oakland in 06 - no one is going to thrive in that. He was really good at catching when he played at Hawaii. Lofton is a really good fundementals coach…. This is certainly worth a try!
Hey did you see that Beaver Maryland game?

our receivers are dropping balls every practice. YOu can’t coach speed or catching a ball (at this age). YOu can teach route running… but catching a ball especially if you feel like you’re going to be hit.

If Liele was the total package right now he would not be available. What we are doing is signing him to evaluate and see if we can salvage something here. Obviously a top tier WR is not on the waiver wire! This is how bad teams get better find the unpolished stones and polish them up if they don’t work then we just cut him…
September 1st, 2008 at 8:13 pm

September 1st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
i remember rolling on the floor laughing at Denver. They compared him to Freddie Mitchell of the eagles. Remember 1st round pick who was booted. Lelie and mitchell are too pretty for the nfl.
I remember making fun of shanahan so hard. then he went to atlanta and i called them dumb asses and many more names. then he was p/u by SF and I said how stupid are they. Remember Martz keeps a lot of WR. He also turns DBs into WR and yet he still couldn’t do anything with Lelie.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Ball Catching is a fundemental and it can be coached - speed and size can not be coached. Strength is improved by training but is not coached. Catching is inter tied to route running and timing with the QB. Someone that is a great WR with one QB may or may not be with another.
There is a chance Lofton can resuurect this guy. I am not saying he will but it is worth the risk - i.e. the 52nd or 53rd roster spot.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Romanowski from CT!
I only know of one receiver who had drops first year and improved. But he worked intensly on it in the off season. Lelie and others do not. It’s a lack of focus and concentration. You can teach hand placement but you can’t teach focus, especially to a prima donna.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:20 pm
that receiver was jerry rice
September 1st, 2008 at 8:21 pm
i have no prob bringing him in but i don’t want anyone penciling him in or expecting anything from him.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Jim
Martz does not coach fundementals he is mainly a scheme guy. Lofton is a good fundementals coach that was a great WR in his own right. I am not saying the current Liele is all that good - I am saying he has size and speed not commonly found. He also did catch the ball in college. There is some flaw in his game and if Lofton can fix that - which I think it is a taking off of focus right at the last second - we have a legit number 2 receiever - if not we gave up a roster spot on a team Kiffin thinks the last 5-10 guys are junk anyways.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Jim (Ct. Raider),
Just outside of Baltimore MD.
I still think we are going to get nine in the box, and a lot of blitzing until we prove we can hit intermediate to deep passes consistently. I agree you need a deep threat, but more than anything they just need the possession type catches and JR needs to prove himself a little bit too. As long as he can hit passes to keep drives alive the deep threat isn’t that big of a deal. We’ll have the deep threat everytime McFadden touches the ball.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:23 pm
hopefully we get chad jackson in to look at as well.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:25 pm

September 1st, 2008 at 8:30 pm
MR
If that is in response to me I did not mean to say or insinuate that you are not a Raider fan. I have read many of your posts and most the time I agree with you but I also notice you are mostly pessimistic and negative about everything.
Since the way we have played since 2003 I can understand being negative - but over the last couple of years some things have been done right such as hiring Cable, moving to a zone blocking system, drafting Miller and Bush. Another thing we did is we have been carefully developing JR and trying to build from a solid running game. Also the use of quick hitting plays and roll outs to minimize our weaknesses in pass protection is great. I wish we could have fired Ryan and I wish Davis would give Kiffin more leeway, but at least there have been some positive things lately.

Jim,
I agree. Right now most defenses are going to say…well the Raiders are going to try to run run run, so let’s stick 9 in the box because they don’t have any WR’s worth worrying about. Most teams have at least one very good CB and they will probably stick him on Curry I guess or maybe Walker. A smart move by the Raiders would be to come out gunning a little to loosen up their D, but like you said I don’t know if they can really do that…
Honestly, I think the Raiders best deep threat right now is Z. Miller!
He is sure handed and he gets open very deep sometimes. Either way I think we can handle the Broncos.

September 1st, 2008 at 8:35 pm
I think everyone knows are ONLY passing threat is Zach Miller.
WE need to use two tight ends and a no huddle. (my pov). We don’t have the greatest talent but we have flexible talent. bush, mcfadden are both excellent receivers and runners. They both can run in or out and zach is a mobile TE who can present matchup problems then you have a rolling qb.

September 1st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Jim
I think we have considerable talent in places on the offense now:
QB - JR really is starting to look comfortable out there - I was really concerned he was going to be a bust when we drafted him but I think they have done a really good job with him and he has really worked hard. Walter is a servicible backup.
RB - Bush and McFad are really really good backups - Fargas is an average to above average starter - we have a lot of depth here. Griffith is good FB but lack depth with loss of OO.
TE - Miller is borderline Probowl and above average. Madson can block and Stewart can but does not do much for route running
WR - Weak here Walker if big if - He stays healthy and keeps his head on striaght is an average number 1 reciever and can even be above average. Curry is a below average number 2 that is injury prone. Depth at WR is problematic as no one has steeped up and Carter is out for year
OL - Above average run blocking may be better than last year and among the worst in pass protection. Gallery looks above average at times but inconsistent. Cooper Carlisle near average starter and I think McQuinstan is under rated and did really well at RT. Our starting tackles are weak especially in pass protection. Harris must emerge and MQ or Henderson must step up or the search continues…
Overall we have emerging talent at RB, TE and QB and are about average in terms of WR considering other teams problems. Our OL is really bad at pass protection and there are no stars here but Gallery may emerge at guard. If the OL can improve at run blocking and just be a little below average (instead of terrible at pass protection) we will have an average to above average offense! In the 10-15 rank range. If OL does not improve look for us to be in the 15 to low 20’s range. Eighter way we are better than last year and way better than 06.. Hard to rebuild a team from where it was in 06 in a season or two.

Some problems I saw with Liele are he seems to be soft - i.e. he does not run the over the middle routes with full authority like he is afraid of being hit. This is something I saw from day one. Secondly as of recently he seems to try to run with the ball before catching it - hence the drops. He needs to concentrate more and sell the middle routes to better get the fades to the side and the bombs that he is known for. It is possible both these problems can be coached out of him. I am sure SF tried but what kind of repetition could he have had with Smith and Company laying on their backs! With his size and speed he can get under JR and his really long throws. You know the ones he makes when on one leg throwing accross the field for 70 yards with just wrist action…
(That was for KK)

BREAKING NEWS: Jackson to Visit Oakland
by Adam Caplan of ScoutNFLNetwork.com, September 1, 2008 at 6:05pm ET
Chad Jackson Profile
Scout Rumor Central has confirmed free agent WR Chad Jackson is expected to fly to Oakland Tuesday morning and will work out for the team either on Tuesday or Wednesday.
A league source notes Oakland seriously considered claiming Jackson off of waivers on Monday but chose to bring him in for a workout instead then they’ll decide whether or not to sign him.
The team reached a contract agreement with free agent WR Ashley Lelie on Monday.
Lelie, who missed most of training camp and pre-season with a calf injury, was recently released by the San Francisco 49ers.

Walker wore #17. Walker changes back to #84. Chad Jackson wears #17. Jackson is scheduled for a visit on Tuesday. I’d say Walker has already moved back to #84 to make room for the new #17.

her kid is getting married.
It was quite obvious that o’bama can’t keep his party together. 1/3 of clinton’s supporters are not voting period. My hottie’s job is to get those votes. How can someone “cross aisles” when he can’t keep his aisle together? Ticket should be reversed.
i also believe romney should be rep candidate. anyway, i’m a once rep moved to independant and my vote can be swayed by a hot governer in Alaska. SHe lives in the Yukon and I went to UCONN. We should have a meeting.. Husky style!

Anthos,
you’ll be standing for the whole game, so you’ll get a good view. At least in 145 that is the way it is.
