Lelie added, Joseph cut
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders officially added Ashley Lelie to the roster Tuesday and released defensive tackle William Joseph.
Lelie will wear No. 87 when the Raiders resume practice Wednesday in preparation for the Sept. 8 season opener against the Denver Broncos.
There have been no other moves yet, but fullback Luke Lawton is expected to be added to the roster Wednesday, meaning another player will have to be released.
Upshaw memorial
Raiders owner Al Davis did not attend the memorial service for NFLPA union chief and former Raider Hall of Fame guard Gene Upshaw, but he he chartered a jet with with the following contingent to represent the Raiders: Carole Davis, Clem Daniels, Otis Sistrunk, Morris Bradshaw, Tom Flores, Rod Martin, Willie Brown, George Atkinson, Raymond Chester, Art Thoms and Jack Tatum.

What a claasy move by AD!
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Another one bites the dust. How Lelie helps I don’t know but I guess we can use all the help at receiver we can get.
I hate to say Monday nite is a “must win” game so early in a season, but Monday nite is a “must win” game for the Raiders.
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Only 3 dt’s?
Kelly,Warren,Sands?
What kind of rotation are we going to have. Kelley and Sands reportedly aren’t in great shape.

Do we need to make room for lawton?
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
if there going to be another cut it would be a LB and sign a good linebacker on the strongside.

915Raider: For the money Sands and Kelly are paid, they better be in shape come next week
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Yes one more cut coming. I say another DT, just carry two.

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.”
The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?”
The boy takes the quarters and leaves.
“What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!”
Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?”
The boy licked his cone and replied,”Because the day I take the dollar, the game’s over!”
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:48 pm
thats what I dont understand how could you not be in shape. That should be a condition of your getting paid, you stay in shape. I question ones commitment to the NATION if they cant be accoutable for themselves. Dont just sit at home eating twinkies and big macs all day, go effing work the hell out. do some cardio…
Lift weights, hell you get to get strong and yoked for free…WTF
On another note I still dont like the lelie signing but what are U gonn do? I have zero pull with AL so…..
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:50 pm
This team can’t get through the season with just 3 DT’s considering our porous D-line. I think Kiffin is gonna carry 6 or 7 WR’s for the first week, and then cut the bottom 1 or 2. Then he can add an available DT to the roster after Week 1. That way he can audition all of the WR’s and have Lelie and Walker on-board for the revenge factor against the Buncos.
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:50 pm

funny joke! you got more?
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I wonder who’s idea it was to sign lelie? I know he is a member of the NATION so I will be rooting for him to succeed. Just wonder was it Al, or Kiff.
I hope Huff, and Hall are okay after losing a family member. Huff, lost his grandfather. Hall lost his dad.
hope these guys greived appropreitly.

September 2nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Sign Dre Moore!
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Richardson can play DT too, so I don’t mind only having 3 DTs. I’m guessing Sam Williams will go so we can sign Lawton.
I really hope we release Johnnie Lee Higgins and sign Chad Jackson.

Darn!
I thought we signed Leelee Sobieski!
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
BBB, I like your logic and thinking Bro, only prob is If we cut the bottom 2 that means we lose watkins, schilens….. To me that would suck. I would hate to see lelie drop a pass or two.
I like the Idea that we coach up, train up, develop up, grow up our own WR’s…

Lelie is a better player than Drew Carter (compare their stats), so this is a upgrade.
Plus he’s a former UH Warrior!!
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm
sam williams will be gone.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Brad:
Chad Jackson would be a nice addition, but Higgins will stay.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Lelie had a very good season in ‘05, if he can return to that form it would be awsome. It’s the same thing with Walker, we’re hoping these guys can play like they did in Denver, which is a very similar system. It’s funny how I used to hate both of these recievers, and now support them wholeheartedly. Welcome to the Raiders, kick some a$$ or leave fast!

September 2nd, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I’d release Trevor Scott and place him on the practice squad. I’d keep Williams for his special teams play.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:06 pm
I thought lawton signed allready
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
OC Raider–
You have big problems if reading about Ashley Lelie signing and William Joseph being cut get you off. That joke was funny though.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I wouldn’t mind signing waived whiners fullback Moran Norris. He is a waayyy better blocker than Lawton, although Lawton has the better hands. We need a solid blocker for Fargas and McFadden!
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
When the dust clears in the SEC this year, defense will be standing tall and one team will reign supreme.
I predict a BCS bowl for the Wildcats this year.

Why is Terdell Sands not in shape, what’s his excuse this year?
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Welcome aboard Lelie. Hop[e your one of the many in Raider lore who revie their careers in Oaktown.
Joseph seems like he’s done.
I felt he might’ve been ready to achieve since he missed so many camps in NY, but had 3 years to get in gear.
too bad, we could’ve used the run D.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
OC Raider is the man!
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:22 pm
sands kool Kell?
He weighs 9 tons. Not exactly a tri athlete, but had some minor injury issues in camp that may have affected his cardio.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
TR:
If you want a road-grader for a fullback we should check out Regan Mauia who was released by the Dolphins. This kid was a 300 lb. fullback at Hawaii and he can run a little. He trimmed down when he got to the pros, but he is still a load.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
TR I wonder about former SD FB Andrew Pinnock.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Mauia? Have to check that out, but catching out of the back field is improtant for Oak. They’d like a well rounded guy, but man, if he can get second level and blow suckers out…
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
But I am a Pac10 fan and the pac is loaded this year.
I cant wait for the Trojans to stomp the buckeyes a mudhole in Ohio this year.
Best year ever for the men from Troy?
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Don’t make excuses. Kiffin says Sands is not in game shape, can’t play many consecutive plays. What’s his excuse?
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Why didn’t Terdell Sands show up at camp in shape?
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Let’s see, we’ve got 3 DT’s on the roster, one is coming back from a season-ending injury and it out of shape, one takes plays off, and the third one is out of shape. You would think the Raiders would have kept Joseph just to give the other out-of-shape DT’s a break. Call me crazy, but I’m guessing that the run D will the #1 problem…… again…
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:28 pm
N21:
Mauia wasn’t asked to catch a lot of passes (except for the occasional shovel pass) in June Jone’s spread offense, he was mainly a blocker.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
rosevilleraider: my point exactly.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
I am worried that we have only three DTs on the roster and two of them are notoriously fragile. Joseph may not have proved himself worthy of being a 1st round pick, but he was a reasonable back-up.
It isn’t like Kiffin to take such a risk, so maybe another DT is on the radar.
Dre Moore is on the Bucs Practice Squad was we can only claim him for a roster spot. He clearly has potential but is he ready to play? Monte thinks not.
Lawton, or another FB, must be signed before Monday. It would be ridiculous to go into a crucial game with just one FB - especially as we will be running on 70% of the plays.
I still like Chad Jackson. His ACL injury lost him any chance of breaking into the starters in New England. He can fly.
I suspect that this roster may change a few more times before the weekend.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Two words: Dre Moore!! Kiffin, Ryan and Al would be crazy to attempt getting through this season with only 3DT’s considering how maligned the D-Line was last year.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
It’s certainly a head-scratcher.
You would think that the Raiders would cut someone who would probably not see the field on Monday, instead of a guy that was in game-day rotation.
Also, I don’t think that they will find a guy sitting around, that was just cut, that can just waltz-in and play better than Joseph.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Kool Kell:
“Why didn’t Terdell Sands show up at camp in shape?”
Round is a shape.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:35 pm
The roster has to change theres no way we can go into the season with roster staying in its present form. We need another FB and one more DT. Question is who do you cut?
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:36 pm
BART:
Dre LESS!
He was a long shot who only showed promise very late in his college career.
I wonder if its his work ethic cuz he had ALOT of ground to make up in technique and such.
Hard tellin’.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm
If I needed three spots, I would cut Tui, Sam Williams and Eugene.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I heard Dre Moore came into camp out of shape, which is not encouraging, but at this point we need a 4th DT, and considering William Joseph was our 5th best option in the pre-season, I do believe a guy like Dre Moore could step in and be a better option. He would play sparingly and learn on the job.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Davis is so old he’s OLDE.
May not be in travelin’ shape or just had bidness.
You can bet he’ll run the Raiders from beyond the grave for at least a few years.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Since they cut Joseph, they will rotate Wakefield at DT
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:44 pm
And with Wakefield at DT, it’ll be a “wake’ every week as the run D dies a painful, slow death
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
BART: Man, That would be great if he could contribute.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Al’s BPA:
He seems like a Jack of all, master of none.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I like Wakefield’s flexibility and attitude but, the sad truth is that he isn’t really good enough in any of the many positions he can cover. The Joseph cut makes no sense unless a better alternative is on a plane heading towards Oakland.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Wakefield is versitile. He could contribute on all three units if needed. We need to remember whoever we sign would need to play on special teams in order to dress on Sundays.

2007 DT’s
Warren Sapp
Gerard Warren
Terdell Sands
Tommy Kelly
Tyler Brayton
2008 DT’s
Tommy Kelly
Gerard Warren
Terdell Sands
we have to get another DT!! Just as you say Scottish; they wouldn’t cut Joseph unless another DT was on the way or in their sites.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Don’t get me wrong, I love Wakefield’s attitude. How many guys would just do the job if asked to play as many positions as he has? Not many. He just isn’t an answer at any one position as a viable backup. That versatility is the only reason he’s on the roster.
I hope we can add a viable 4th DT before next Monday. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll be hearing rumors from BSPN that the raiders are switching to a 3-4, lol.

808,
I’m not familiar with Mauia. Sounds like he could barrel down defenders. Like Nnamdi21 I’ll have to do a little research on him. Really the only thing I’m worried whoever we sign has to have decent catching ability, otherwise we’re screwed. I think that is the reason they are going to sign Lawton.
Nnamdi21,
I think the problem with Andrew Pinnock was inconsistency. I think that is why the Chargirls cut him. I really don’t think he would be a good fit in our system. Honestly, we had a good thing with O’Neal. The guy could catch and block, losing him was a pretty big hit.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Fire Kiffin before the season starts please.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm
808, I don’t think you can make that a condition. We just need a capable 4th DT - a Special Teams contribution would just be a bonus.
Fact: Tommy Kelly isn’t yet 100% ready - and his leg has yet to be tested over 4 quarters.
Fact: Gerard Warren is still scarily inconsistent - if Bad Gerard takes the field, he need to find another option, and quick.
Fact: Terdell Sands will not last 4 quarters, his fitness isn’t at the right level and his temperament is still very suspect.
It would be madness to play the Broncos with just those three and a jack-of-all-trades like Wakefield on the roster. Shanarat would have the Broncos runnung straight all night. Madness.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Kiffin needs to win Monday Nite, period!
Losing the home opener, on Monday Nite, with a national TV audience, against rival Denver, will produce a huge nasty raspberry boil on Mr Davis’s assz. And sheit will roll downhill.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Terdell Sands obviously has a questionable work etic.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Ashley Lelie is nothing more than no. 4 WR at this point in life….My god I wanted to keep Joseph…………who do they plan to be the 4th DT? Man this insanity going on now
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
OC “Readin a new thread is better than sex!”
No, just …. no.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
agreed Scottish, if Sands, Kelly or Warren got injured then the remaining two would be playing every down without anyone subbing in. We all know that is not possible with this group, and the probability of one of them getting injured is high. Also, Wakefield has been mostly playing at DE, not DT. Assuming he could fill in at DT is a big IF.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Could we be going into the season with 6 WRs?…
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Excuse me! but haven’t you guy’s noticed that 90% of DT’s aren’t in the best of shape. People in here were crying for Grady Jackson and he’s never been in shape in his entire life.
AS long as they play well who cares!
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:05 pm
11680- possibly it seems like it………….gosh I dont like Lelie at all
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:05 pm
BHP I agree!!! I felt Joseph or Shaw should have stayed….Lelie sucks man
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
WTF!!! how do we cut a DT that was figured to be in the rotation, for Lelie???
Who is the running sh*t ? I doubt it’s Uncle Al (isn’t he at Genes funeral?)
This could be disastrous, sign a banged up WR that most likely will not contribute at all….and waive a DT that’s been with us all training camp, that would definitely help against the run (denvers only hope to win). How does this make any frickin sense???
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Yo brien.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Yup, we really, really, really need to win on Monday.
If we win, then we should get the confidence and momentum necessary to drive towards 2nd place in the AFC West. The Broncos would be delated and the pressure on Kiff would be greatly reduced.
If we lose, then the doubts creep in, the press will start to smear and insinuate, confidence will crack and Kiff will be on a very short rope.
The good news is that we should win. We are stronger than last season, whilst the Broncos don’t show much signs of improvement. We can run against Denver and we can manage the clock and field possession. A long hour of attrition - unspectacular but relentless running football - should see us home.
Fingers crossed. Toes crossed.

“The Falcons dumped him after one year in 2006 and the 49ers — who are as receiver-challenged as anyone in the league — dropped him one year after handing out a $2 million guarantee.”
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I heard Joseph about to sign with Denver.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Scottish,..at least if Denver crushes Oakland then maybe Kiffin will get fired after the game,..so there will at least be some good out of a loss.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Scottish:
If your a 4th team (Not 1st, 2nd, or 3rd) you better be able to do something else! Or you’re not dressing on Sunday. It’s a 53 player roster, but you don’t dress 53 on game days. BTW Richardson would be our 4th DT.

September 2nd, 2008 at 3:13 pm
maybe lelie will stretch the field, thus keeping the defense honest….disuading them from stacking the box. opens up the run game a bit and the flats for screens and dump-offs.

AS long as they play well who cares!”
Yeah, If brother, If. Although it hasn’t been done in the last 6 years.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:14 pm
808, sorry but, I still think it would be suicidal to dress less than 4 DTs on match day - especially as the middle of our DLine was the weakest point in our 2007 defense and its is bound to be the area that our opponents are going to attack in 2008.
We need 4 DTs more than 6WRs or 3TEs or 7LBs.
Kelly, Warren and Sands just won’t be enough. We need a capable 4th DT ready to face down the Broncos.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Giggity NO!! Lelie sucks man plain and simple……..JLH for 3rd WR I’ll be content with Watkins and Schilens battling it out for 4th and 5th
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
David White SFgate:
If Lelie doesn’t work out, it’s not that big a deal. He got a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum. They could cut him as fast as they did Mike Williams last year in-season and look elsewhere.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Oh my god dont give me this system fit bullshhhhhhhhit….stop with the excuses…..Lelie is a fast guy but not a good football player………..please

My dreams still alive brien,..Kiffin fired after denver game.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Personally, I think DE should be more of a concern. Richardson would be our “swing” player DE/DT. All we have on the outside is Burgess, Scott, & Edwards.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Lord if you do exist……..please have the Raiders sign Willie Anderson…I can give a damn about fitting the zone blocking system……hell zone blocking doesnt mean shhhhhhhhhhit when the LT can pass block

Sounds like Al is getting weaker and weaker by the day if he wasn’t able to make the memorial for Gene. I know Gene is one of his favorites and it must eat him to not be able to attend.
Only 3 DTs? Kinda scary how lite our depth is there. I hope it gets addressed after the first week.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:18 pm
brien you goin to denver game?
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:19 pm
For those who care, the Raiders were 1 or 1.5 point underdogs on opening night for the last few months. Saturday I saw the line went to 3 and at lunch a book had them 3.5 point underdogs. Not sure what moved the line so much
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Why is everyone so worried about the DT’s. It dont see Josh Shaw or Joseph being snatched up by any other teams haha. We can always resign them later or add another 4th DT. Those guys didnt show enough to warrant being kept safe. They most likely will sit and wait for us to call. Maybe we can swing a trade for another young DT. IM not worried at this point. Unless someone gets injured during the game it shouldnt be an issue. We can always throw J.Rich or Wakefield down there in an emergency.

Trust me. The Raiders will not go into the season with 3DTs. If they released Joseph, they already have someone else lined up to replace him (if they have no plans to bring him back). We just don’t know who that person is yet.
Just like when they released Sims before knowing the replacement.

Okay enough with all the negativity.
I think the Raiders will be much improved this season and I think we’ll be an exciting team to watch.
I can’t wait to see how Russell, DMC, Bush, Hall, Huff, & Walker pan out. I don’t expect things to be perfect. There’s going to be a learning curve for the young guys and the new acquisitions. But I’m looking forward to this season.

I’m a little worried about cutbacks against this run defense though (prob more than a little). Tennessee made them pay on one run where Morrison over pursued and the play called left no one in the vicinity to stop fatso, LenDale White.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Well Terp we shall see!!! Right now its up in the air………….the Tackle situation on offense is a problem………..huge problem

I could see what Morrison was doing though. He was aiming to plug a gap made on the right side of the Dline. But Tenn’s play called for a cutback which left the defense exposed b/c no one was on that side of the field.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I agree with post 127.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Prob not as much of a problem as you would assume Brien. So longs as the team can run and run well, the tackles should be OK. This was illustrated against Tenn too.

Vegas Raider–I hear you on the line movement. I’m beginning to think that the oddsmakers may either be really out of touch, or they have access to info we regular fans don’t. I was just blown away by the fact that we’re even home underdogs. Damn, I hope it’s just a lack of respect / knowledge–I was hoping to cash in this Monday.
Do you have a favorite place to watch the Raiders, or do you have the Direct TV package? The R-J put out their list of football bars around the valley, and FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE I’VE BEEN HERE (going on 9 years), there is NO RAIDER BAR LISTED. I’m hoping that the Offramp Lounge, the headquarters of the Raider Booster Club, Las Vegas Chapter last year, will be showing games again this season.
*****
As to the DT situation…I’m going to assume that Al and the defensive staff are sifting through the garbage cans, and will find an adequate backup…they may also be waiting until after Week #1 to pick one up so they won’t be liable for a vet’s minimum salary for the whole season. Going through a season with only 3 DTs is crazy, especially given our #31 ranking against the run last year.

September 2nd, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I bet we ask Shaw to come back. We will need more than 3 DT’s to play any game. As for Sands not being in shape I have an idea…Take some string and tie a twinkie on the end of a stick and make him chase it. The weight could be off before game time Monday night.
We should stick with the receivers we have. We dont know what Schillens or Watkins have, we do however know exactly what we are getting in Lelie (SUX BIGTIME). I am not encouraged with what has happened the last couple days. Dont like picking over the bones of other teams castoffs….PHUCK!

Good to see you back posting, 808! Mahalo! I have the same hopes for our D, but right now, there are too many questions. The biggest problem we have w/ running a 3-4 is Warren at that NT when the opponent decides to run. As far as I have seen, Warren cannot hold the point when he’s doubled. He’s on skates. Sands can if he plays with leverage.

Javon Walker injury maybe, the donkeys have looked good but preseason usually doesn’t move lines. You know the saying out here “home dogs cover”. Just hope that doesn’t mean we lose by 2.
I am at the Hilton just about every Sunday, except when the games is televised, which isn’t often. No DirectTV. I have to echo the concern of cutting Joseph. Even if we are running more 3-4, this is the one guy who was mentioned as being consistent against the run if nothing else. Warren consistently got pushed 5 yards off the ball when doubled, and I thought was more suited to be Kelly’s backup as the 3 technique. Sands and Joseph played the NT position better, so I do hope we have a backup to Sands lined up.
Jay Richardson is not at DT.

The Speedway bar used to be called Rookies, but they changed the name this summer. I’m not sure if it’s still a Raider bar.

September 2nd, 2008 at 4:01 pm
IMO, we lack the edge pass-rushers to succesfully run the 3-4 on a consistent basis. Maybe throw it in here and there to switch things up, but our best edge rushers (Howard or Morrison) are also our best cover LB’s. So who does that leave to rush the edge, Sam Williams, Ricky Brown? Not quite Merriman or LT
September 2nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

You were right about Henderson on the other 60 plays. He looks like he is going to be a player. Looked bad on those 5 or 6 plays I was initially talked about. But when I rewatched the game with an emphasis on his and Joseph’s play, I was really impressed.

Vegas and Desert
Respect? That has nothing to do with the line.
Once the line is created ONE thing moves it - BETTING. The idea is to get an even number of bets on both sides so the casino doesn’t lose big. At 1.5 people were obviously betting up Denver so to try to balance the betting the casinos had to offer more points to the Raiders.
This team is like 2 of the last 20 against Denver. Most bettors are not Raider bloggers who think the team is Super Bowl bound every season. Given that most of their games are decided by 3 points or less, giving the Raiders 3.5 will drive betting. That’s all it is about.
87 - Boroque - Al is calling the shots. If you read the post, Jerry says Al didn’t fly anywhere.
September 2nd, 2008 at 4:27 pm
And this is my problem with Kiffin, I sense he is very impatient with young talent. You can’t coah in this league that way. These are careers not a 4 year college stint. It takes kids sometimes 3 years before they really start to become whatever they’re going to be. If you’re cnstntly cutting them before they get there you’ll never develope anyone.
Tmmy Kelly, Nnamdi Aso, Ron Curry and on and on wuld never make it under that kind of leadership.
This is not USC where you look down the practice field and get another HB. Their roster are 100 deep this one is 53 and it’s extremel tough to catch up to speed at this level. He would’ve cut Johnny Unitas.
