Investments take a dip
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 at 7:28 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from Wednesday’s late afternoon practice and media session:
– Not a great day for some of the Raiders most high priced investments.
Defensive end Tommy Kelly, recipient of an $18.125 million signing bonus in a deal which could reach $50.5 million, decided was arrested for DUI Sunday night because he didn’t spring for a driver. Kelly practiced and will face the Buffalo Bills Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Running back Justin Fargas, who cashed in with a $6 million signing bonus and a $12 million contract after breaking 1,000 yards last year, didn’t practice and almost certainly will not play.
Running back Darren McFadden, who got $26 million guaranteed, watched practice with his right foot in a boot because of turf toe. Coach Lane Kiffin said he believed that McFadden could have played if there were a game Wednesday, but it’s better in these cases to withhold judgment until he actually practices.
Left tackle Kwame Harris, signed during free agency to be the Raiders left tackle, missed practice with a knee injury after being inactive against the Chiefs. He’s probably 50-50 at best to face Buffalo.
Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker couldn’t complete practice because of his hamstring injury and his status remains in doubt _ as it has all season. Walker got $11 millon to sign, has a $1 million salary and may need to rally to receive his $5 million roster bonus in March.
– Kelly faced the music and spoke to the media regarding his arrest, although his sense of remorse didn’t overwhelm anyone. He had been out with some teammates and was driven back to his car, said he expected a driver, and when there wasn’t one, opted to drive anyway.
Kelly said he “probably” made the wrong decision and “severely doubts” it will happen again.
His message from coach Lane Kiffin?
“He was like, `You can’t take that risk. Don’t even do it.’ He understood,” Kelly said. “What you do in your off time you do, but understand teh risk your’ taking. It was a dumb decision on my own. If I could go back I would have probably just left my car at the hotel and got it the next day.”
– Whatever partying Kelly did wasn’t furnished by the team. There is no alcohol served on charter flights.
–Fargas said it seemed strange to be involved in so many violent collisions in between the hash marks only to be injured running by himself along the sidelines.
“Playing this week isn’t likely, but I’m not going to put a time or date on it,” Fargas said. “I’ll be back as soon as possible.”
– Editorial comment _ what the heck was Fargas doing split wide right in a passing formation anyway? He has the worst hands of anyone in the Oakland backfield. Even more ridiculous was that JaMarcus Russell saw Fargas had one-on-one coverage (you think?) and waved him downfield, hoping for a big play.
– The guess here, and it’s only a guess, is Fargas misses the Buffalo and San Diego games, then uses the bye week to rest up before being ready to go again.
– Turf toe can be a lingering issue, so the Raiders will be careful with McFadden. If he experiences pain against the Bills, Michael Bush could be in for 25-plus carries if the game is in doubt, because the remaining two running backs are block-and-catch fullbacks Justin Griffith and Luke Lawton.
“All the nervousness is gone now,” Bush said. “Last year, I was like, ‘man am I not doing something right or what was it?’ Now they throw the whole playbook at you. As long as I stay prepared and
keep going as I’m coached I’ll be fine.”
– If it were determined McFadden’s condition is serious enough to put him in doubt, Louis Rankin would probably be brought up from the practice squad and the Raiders would have to cut a player to make room.
– Walker’s inability to finish practice continues a trend in which the lead receiver has been unable for one reason for another to step up and assume his role. When asking if his continued absence has hurt, Kiffin was frank.
“Yeah, it has. Here’s the guy who was supposed to be the No. 1 receiver when he comes in,” Kiffin said. “Unfortunately he’s had some issues and he’s had the injuries, and here we go again.
“We’re warming up for the game Sunday hoping that he would get to play. He didn’t feel very good then. Today, he comes out, we talked bout it being a big week for him. He played well against Buffalo last year at the start of the year (9 catches, 119 yards).
“I started talking to him yesterday about it, about a big week, this team needs you, then unfortunately, halfway through practice, he can’t go anymore.”
– Kiffin said he has not been told he’s on the verge of being fired, nor has he been told the stories regarding his job status are incorrect.
“It’s someone else’s decision to make. We’ll just keep plugging along until we hear different,” Kiffin said. “The only thing that I don’t like is for our players, they have to deal with this and it’s a distraction. It shows a lot about our group because if you had some different guys, they could take advantage of the situation, all the stuff in the media and the paper, all the reports from our front office that there’s going to be a firing yesterday and today, all that stuff.
“They could take advantage of that situation. ‘We’re not listening to you. We’ve been told, according to the paper, from our front office, that you’re being fired. It’s just a matter of when.’ So, it shows a lot about our guys.”
– Former Dallas Cowboys Jimmy Johnson, who in the past has been a Davis supporter and confidant, was less than complimentary when talking about the Raiders when talking with Fox sports.
“I don’t know that there’s a lot of people who would want to work there. It’s a mess and it’s been a mess for quite some time,” Johnson said. “I just don’t know how anybody functions in that type of atmosphere. They do have some good young players and they showed that this past Sunday. I think eventually this team will be one to be dealt with but as far as being a coach there, being an assistant coach, being someone in administration, it really is a mess. I don’t know that there’s going to be a whole lot of people who would want to work there to be honest with you.”
Chances are Norv Turner gave his old boss in Dallas a less than stellar assessement of what’s going on in Oakland.

Javon Walker is killing me
September 17th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Hopefully comments like Jimmy Johnson’s are resonating with Al Davis. Leave Kiffin alone and give him the support he needs to do the job
September 17th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
man fahq walker.
i hope the no-names we have on the WR squad step up and show this piece of schit what a real receiver looks like.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
1. Keep Kiffin
2. Cut Walker
3. Rest McFadden
4. Run the crap out of Bush
5. Open up the playbook just a little bit more for JMac
6. Success.

September 17th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Before anyone even considers faulting the coaches, the “Admin crew” should learn to pay players who show up.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Severe you still in here, you get my message? I got two words for you: Art Shell.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
and they talked walker out of retirement DOH
September 17th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Al did Snake. Good move, huh?
September 17th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
walker is PATHETIC….what a joke of a reciever. he had better break 1000 yds to gain my respect back….
September 17th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
get off your ass javon, or just go home!
September 17th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
DMC will go me thinks but look for the pass. Walker’s needs to be on point.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
This kills me…..it’s hard enough to win in this league and AL’s GOING TO FREAKING FIRE KIFFIN??? WTF???? From a fans point of view it seems like he does not have the best interest of the “team” in mind, he has the best interest of “Al Davis” in mind. It’s not fair to all the loyal fans and season ticket holders who show up, pay their hard earned $$ and support this struggling team. I dont think it should be this hard to be a freaking Raiders fan. I love the Raiders, and without AL their would be no Raiders, but this turmoil is killing me. Al, you didn’t fire Kiffin in January, so let him see what he can do since your on the hook for this year anyways. As fans we don’t care if you’re involved in game planning etc…we just want to win. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop the madness.
One Broken Down Raiders Fan
September 17th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
All the drama and stupid f’n signings. Al Davis f’n brain is oatmeal. Gawddam muthaf’n senile ole bizznitch.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Excerpt from article distributed by the Raiders PR department at press conference:
“The Raiders screw up a play and take themselves out of the red zone. Cue Camera 1, the shot of a frail-looking Al sitting up in a press box with those watery eyes. Anarchy in the locker-room? That must be Al’s doing, a result of the man walking around undercutting the coaches in charge with his sense that he knows better than any of them how to run a game.”
not a real flattering article to bring to the attention of the local media.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
They’re all Al Davis flunkies, and incompetent.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
S&BinDC…post #4
Good formula for success. Walker is a total bust, a Davis pick, a Davis talking him out of retirement and refusing to take his signing bonus. Davis is not senile, he’s insane.
Ya, for any chance against the Bills, Kiffin, if still our coach, will need to open up the passing game, and Russell and his receivers we will have to produce.
All you Dizk Heads, who still back you’re hero of the pass Al Davis, just listen to some of the words from Jimmy Johnson and take heed: “As far as being a coach there, being an assistant coach, (even) being someone in administration, it really is a mess!”
As Red said in the Shawshank redemption, as he was about to break his parole: “Get busy living or get busy dying,”
that the God Dazz truth.” Which translates to: “Until Davis dies or falls into a long Coma, we’re not going anywhere.” I don’t want Davis to die, he’s done so much for the Raiders and we have a lot to be thankful for, but his time has passed and he needs to turn the team over to someone? His son Mark, John Madden, someone, and may the first order of business be: Fire Ryan.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Javon Walker is the perfect example of a player that needs a coach with control/significant input into the roster. Javon Walker is the perfect example of a player that needs someone in his face day after day. Javon Walker is the type of player that is hoping a Lane Kiffin gets fired and is replaced by a “Players Coach”
Why didn’t we try to sign Bernard Berrien….
September 17th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
The Raiders organization should come out and….
1) Support Kiffin.
2) Fire Kiffin.
This “days of our lives.” fiasco is getting sick for EVERYONE that has ANYTHING to do with the Raiders.
Al if Jimmy Johnson is bashing you it’s time to listen old man, Take your pills and snap out of it. You are becoming the laughing stock of the NFL, even to your allies.
This does no one ANY good by keeping silent, it’s time to act like a professional organization…..
September 17th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Yeah, it’s a problem, the Raider coaches never have any authority. A lot of players will take advantage. Not a committment to excellence by any means.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
john madden would turn this team into a winner for sure. all the players would want to be here.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Al figures he’s the only thing the team needs. He don’t need no stinkin coaches.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
We should activate Louis Rankin, don’t take any chances, just cut Davis’s pet doggy, Sam Williams.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
I’m afraid eve John Madden would want nothing to do with our laughable organization these days.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
*even*
September 17th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
I don’t know why Al finds it necessary to even have a head coach. Just trot John Herrera out there with a headphone and a clipboard.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
if al davis wasnt involved he would…..
September 17th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Al Davis MUST be crazy. How many seasons does he figure he has left to piss away?
September 17th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Why not just have old senile Al be the coach up in the press booth, it’s not like any legit coach will ever want to come here now anyway.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Jerry, thanks for you’re update, but don’t take so long to post, especially now, with all this madness flying around and all of us Raiders fans sitting in limbo. You’re going to have to put in some overtime. Just send Al Davis the bill. If he can pay all this money to some of these non-producers, he can surely pay for your overtime.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Hell the only way to get a pee wee coach to sign on to this b.s. is to gove him 100 million a year and 35 million signing bonus.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Fargas going deep? I love Jerry’s take. When I saw it, I was ike, “who’s THAT? Looks kinda like fargas but it couldn’t be.”
Justin saw the ball heading his way and his whole body must’ve seized up.
He still looked better than Walker. Did he retire? Seems like he did.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
No, he’s needs a HC only to sheild him from any bad performances. HE WILL NOT TAKE ANY DIRECT RESPONSIBILITY!
September 17th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
The reason Al talked Javon into staying is so he would’nt look bad by signing him in the first place.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
“The Raiders screw up a play and take themselves out of the red zone. Cue Camera 1, the shot of a frail-looking Al sitting up in a press box with those watery eyes. Anarchy in the locker-room? That must be Al’s doing, a result of the man walking around undercutting the coaches in charge with his sense that he knows better than any of them how to run a game.”
He’s been doing it a while and built some serious Championship teams.
I think he got old.
He doesn’t realize the mentality of some of todays players.
They will just take the money and run.
Honor and pride or an afront to your manhood don’t mean anything to some.
Davis is paying players what he thinks they’d be worth if they perform, like he did with Plunkett and others.
You can’t take other teams cast offs and give them a chance to redeem themselves because too many of these guys are playing for the pay not for love or immortality.
Lets hope these guys catch a fire against a good Buffalo team and acquire a taste for winning.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
#35, exactly!
September 17th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
#36
Yeah Al Davis and the Raiders were never the same after Free Agency in 1989
September 17th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
I’d like to see if Gerard Warren can have another good game in a row.
Cardio is not good and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a little of the “K gun” tribute by running a little hurry up.
On the other side, Terrance McGee did not participate in practice today.
If Oakland can get Walker up and contributing it could open up Miller.
Teams in our first 2 games played alot more man and took him away.
If Walker can play and get hot and move the chains 1st half…
September 17th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
I bet javon just doesnt feel like playing or trying but knows he can get paid if he pretends he is getting better.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Get Schilens, Lelea, and Higgins ready to play. Move Curry back in the depth chart until he proves he can be counted on to catch the ball. If Walker can’t get over his injury then don’t keep agrevating it by trying to practice before it is healed. Activate Watkins. He at least did a good job holding on to the ball in camp and preseason. De-activate Walker on game day until he is healthy, then if he can prove he is a number one, great.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Walker’s orbital bone holding him out.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
43 LOL
September 17th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
I HATE JAVON WALKER!!!
AL You are a close second!
Walker, I will pay you to go back to Las Vegas.
Al, look at your past coaches who you let go: Rat Shanahan -Super Bowl winner, Chuckie Gruden - Super Bowl winner, Acne Turner - AFC Championship participant. Don’t let go of another coach who has so much promise!
September 17th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Behind the Shield with Jeanette Thompson just turned on. Short interview with Kiffin, no talk about him being fired, just some questions on the Bills’ game plan for this Sunday.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
f@&k the soap operas, happy 81st to George Blanda.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
PFT’s lil brother CFT just posted that Kiffin to Syracuse is highly unlikely because Al Davis is an alum and a big dollar contributer.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Walker got here and found out he didn’t like Kiffin. Kiffin expected too much from him. Being a baby, just like Porter, Walker decided he would just retire.
Al could not have this. This was the last straw. Walker was Al’s prize WR to bring back the deep ball with Russell. How dare Kiffin try to run him off in an attempt to show him(Davis) up.
Al told Walker to just hang out and wait. As soon as Kiffin started losing, he would be gone. Al just needed a reason to fire him and NOT PAY his contract, just like he did with Shanahan.
Now, Walker is just hangin on the sidelines, as ordered by the BOSS. Just tell Kiffin you can’t go. What can he do? He has no control over players.
As soon as Kiffin is fired and Lofton takes over, Walker will be ready to go. Then the Raiders will be right back to the power run with the deep drop, long ball offense that Al Davis has always loved.
Joe Bugle, Mike White, Norv Turner, Art Shell (Twice), and now Lofton. The offensive philosophy remains the same. Power run to set up the deep pass. Just the way Al likes it.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
If Javon Walker does not want to play, we don’t need him. Why didn’t Davis let Javon Go? Al Davis had to keep his Walker….sorry, couldn’t resist. I am really conserned about my Raiders, but I hope that everything will be alright.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Nation Collective, you are a total tool. I’m imagining a large UFC fan in diapers eating hot pockets in the bathtub. Yeah, you’re that big a douche.
You have nothing better to do on a beautiful Wednesday night than post lame links on a football blog? Obviously you have no friends and have never had the company of a woman.
Seriously, leave those of us who are coming here for information alone and go to the Lord of the Rings fansite. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of lonely, overweight retards there to play with.
Unbelievable.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Lane will be the hc for the rest of the year. Al jusy wanted him to shut his trap: mission accomplished.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Raiderkoolaid — You are right. Its sort of time to fish or cut bait…and Javon Walker needs to be cut. Let’s go with guys we got and develop them the best we can. Javon is useless as long as he won’t practice and play. Its amazing that Javon is so irresponsible and careless…Guess Al Davis didn’t do much of a background check.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Or even “concerned”…how ’bout that?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
NOW?
2 words - Art Shell!
Its been awhile since the raiders HC job was thought of as desirable. We all went through this before with Chucky… string of misfits after - Callahan, Norv and Art w/ the king of the B & B as our OC. Sure ya might argue Norv is a great OC - but look what he did to a good Chargers team - he Norved em.
It pisses me off to no end that the Raiders front office wont end this speculation about Kiff’s job security! It really proves that Al has no interest in winning, let alone his commitment to excellence. Its just his way - or the highway!
Tune in next week for another exciting episode of…
WHEN WILL AD DIE?!?!?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:14 pm

KK, so true.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Can anyone tell us exactly WHO said Kiff was to be fired? Except two unnamed sources?
Is this “story” possibly a blog- and media-spurred frenzy, that somehow grew legs, and then started running?
Kiffin knew his responsibilities when he signed on the dotted-line. He’s done a pretty good job of things so far. Now, he needs to build a few wins into his program, and the accolades will come.
He’s got support, but he still hasn’t gotten the team’s players “rallied” behind him. At least they haven’t turned on him — a very good sign. Hopefully they all rally for a common cause…winning as a cohesive unit, with an “us-vs-them” mentality. Like, “Yeah, we’re the Raiders. So??”
No excuses — everyone held to the same standard…and winning is that standard. That could actually happen again, you know. It could happen starting this week. Imagine…a “surprise” victory in Buffalo, and then getting to face the sputtering Chargers before the Bye Week, in Oakland. Talk about incentive at home!
As it should be — if Kiffin wins, he’s in. Time for the other half of his offense to come alive, and for Kiff to show the NFL he’s more than a 3-horse pony. His QB project, JaMarcus, needs to start taking-charge on the field…and Kiffin needs to stay in charge of his entire team (even on the defensive side), as he continues his own growth.
Keep winning, Lane, and everything’ll be alright.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
K-Rock — And those 7 step drops will be happening behind our tender pass blocking tackles….
September 17th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
A huge problem for the passing game is the
O-line. They need Zack to stay back and block even though he is Jmac’s most productive receiver
September 17th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
I never….They need to spread out the field…If they did that, Zach could line up outside on a smaller backer and not have that problem.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Decoys my man. What good is an 8 man front with 4 wide?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Raider Kool aid, I agree with you about benching Curry and playing Lelie, Schillens, Watkins, and JLH. Lane needs players that he can count on, and Jamarcus should try to figure out who he has a chemistry with. I think Schillens is good for about 3-4 catches a game. JLh is a threat with the ball in his hands. I would throw him a screen or two, and let him come around as a pitch open on a couple of plays maybe while Dmac is in the wild hog.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
NC
Wow, that was very clever. Take a statement of mine and come up with a pathetic retort. Wow. Did you learn that kind of wit at Burger King? You know, when the customer says “Make mine a small?” and you confidently say “Would you like to upgrade that to a King Size?”
I respect that you’ve managed to stay in a long term relationship, but committed beastiality is currently frowned on in civilized culture. I’m not sure if you were aware of that.
Anyway, if you have anything somewhat logical to contribute to the current state of the Raiders, I’d love to hear it. Otherwise, please keep your clicker off You Tube links and go take care of your poor wife. I’m sure her teets needs a good milking.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Damn you mods….
September 17th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Al did a great job talking Javon out of retirement. Now he’s on the roster and acting like he’s retired.
A great job by the senile “boss of bosses” signing a turd to big $$. Maybee he should have lent Tommy Kelly his Rascal to get home….
September 17th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Zach miller will need to assist Mario Henderson, and we are a run team, so why would we want to go away from that when it actually works.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Hey newbie,
I havve said what I needed to about the tyrant. If you were not in here for that, thats your bad.
Oh and I milked your mom this morning. Plenty of silly cone for the week!
So if you are done….
September 17th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Any discussion about what was once our un-disputed strength of the team — the running game? If McFadden is still hurting this weekend, what depth we had just a few days ago is gone. No depth, with a kid coming back from a broken leg having to carry the load.
Here’s to ya, Michael Bush!
September 17th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Dick V,
Remember what the Tyrant used to say before he got Al’s Heimers?
“We don’t take what the defense gives us, we take what we want”
So why line up in max protect when you force them to play your game. If they decide to commit to pressure, audible and go for the quick pass or a screen. Peyton Manning does this very well, don’t you think?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Hayes,
What about Rankin…..He reminds me of Sproles….
September 17th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I think i finally got an ulcer with this team. Idiot AD wants to fire kiffen but keep Ryan? The only reason we won last week was that we played against a team that is worse then us. Kelly & Sands disappeared again. They are the worse pathetic lineman in th nfl.Get rid of these two idiots. Burgess finally showed up. Very disappointed in him this yr. He was horrible against Denver and he was playing one on one. He no longer has it.We need a complete new D-LINE. It pisses me off that we are going to keep Kelly & Sands all yr and next yr. We will continue to suck until we get rid of these guys and bring in some new talent. Walker is a big bust. Bring in Joe Horn if he is still available or any other receiver that wants a chance. I’m sure they will be better then what we got. Curry is horrible. Lelie is the only one that looks good. We won’t win another game until we play against the KC.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

In theory that’s true, but the reality is the O-line doesn’t provide enough QB protection without the help of Griffith and Miller.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Look at some point, the young man at qb is going to have to grow up. Whether he is in the Kiffin system, or Lofton, or Rathman, or, oh god its too much……he is going to have to put on the big boy hat that he used to wear at LSU and play football. Stop thinking and let the game happen. All of this talk about the stone handed recievers is getting old. These guys are paid an nfl salary to play the position, but if you do not engage them in the flow of the game, the end up lame duck like moss. We see where that got us.
So yes, you put the emphesis on running all of the time, great, but eventually teams smell the vanilla and attack it. Then what. It is too late and your skrewed!
September 17th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
The word is that Corey Williams is already a bust in Cleveland, and the coaches are pissed that Savage traded away Leigh Bodden even though, Shaun Rodgers has been a “beast” so far.
Phil Savage basically put the coaching staff on notice that they need to win now.
Brad Childress has already pulled the plug on the Tavarias Jackson experiment two weeks into the season.
The Rams gm annouced to the press that changes may be coming soon if they don’t turn things around quickly.
Rod Marenelli has to feel stupid that hepaid Cory Redding Tommy Kelly money and Redding is a bust as a 3technique: maranelli did not think too highly of Rodgers who Crennel saya is a “beast”. maranelli is in year 3 and Detroit sucks: you know what they are going to say when Millen fires him ” who can win in Detroit”, and who would want that job.
In light of Redding and Corey Williams already being proclaimed busts by the regimes that gave them the money: same money Kelly got for basically the same production… I feel like Kelly might end up being a good signing from what i have seen so far.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
It worked last week. Run until they prove they can stop it. Occasionally use the play action IF the running game is working. Control the time of possession and win the game. Simple.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Hey Dick,
You notice that more and more teams are in turmoil these days….I heard the term today, win now…..there is no time anymore for anyone to do anything…..Hell when you really crunch the numbers, Kiffin has only coached for 18 games now. That’s nothing compared to some of the coaches out there. How can he establish anything in that short a period of time, with asmany young players as there are?
I just don’t see it!
September 17th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
The only hope we have for Sunday is a pass game, predicated on JR hitting Miller and our RBs out of the backfield. We have to establish the run, but that alone won’t be enough - must be diversified to win. And please Ryan - continue the blitz and give everyone a chance to get some! Gotta see our safeties get a sack or two.
Oh yeah, and NC - I know you just discovered this site, so I hope you some fun with your momma jokes. Eventually more will be expected or you’ll be driven out to the Charger blog.
Anyway, a free pass is extended to our rookies brothers. Don’t worry, you all get a hard time in the beginning. Please don’t let us down.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Mo…..Many aliasis man…..The one you see is recent….but been here for a few years now…..
September 17th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Put it like this, you leave the wife out and I leave the MOM out…….
Come on Davis……
September 17th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
It’s all good brah, just cut the crappy links. Let’s get down to the real business of keeping the Nation on top.
One day we could be sharing whiskeys at Clancy’s in Seal Beach.
One love
September 17th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
The mods cut them out. They’re probably gonna cut links out all together…..Damn it!
September 17th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Al also says we have a commitment to excellence.
Berand Berrian dropped a few passes already in Minnesota, and he never sniffed a 1000 yards in the NFl, but he got 16 milly in g’s
Dante Stallworth has been injured over in Cleveland not contributong though getting 10 milly in g’s
Jerry Porter gt 10 milly in g’s and has yet to contribute
Madeu Williams got 16 milly in g’s and he is hurt might not play this year at safety for the vikes.
I can say with confidence that free agency is a bigger crap shoot then the draft after the first 10 picks; however, if you have to make some moves: I think signing Javon over berrian, porter, and stallworth, and Kelly overCorey williams, kris jenkins, and Gibril over Madeu were better moves. no telling who willl work out, but I am just pointing out that there is a market that decides what these players get, and Al has to pay more being in Cali to get these guys. I would rather see the Raiders get a gm, keep kiffin, and build through the draft, but I do not own the team.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Damn Jim…..Want a link of his pic?
Just Kidding Just Kidding…….
Or am I?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Soon Dick V. Soon…….
By the way, Wilson is a stud and this run d is better for having him.
I am gonna check the run d stats.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Chaos this the nfl…. you already know what that stands for ….
September 17th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
#13 in rushing defense.
#1 in rushing offense..
Thats good so far.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I read in this blog alot about you all saying Davis wants to fire Kiffin,..I see it on bspn also,..last year bspn even reported Ryan got fired. The local writers claim Kiffin is about to be fired. Have any of you heard Davis say he was firing Kiffin? Has Kiffin said he was being fired? Some people like the posters in here believe everything thear read in blogs, newspapers,..bspn,…I think you are all victims of a Davis/Kiffin hoax…you are all being fooled. Not me.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
In the hole in passing offense…obviously and 21 in passing defense. Tahts all due to the donks.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
We have to get Curry going soon. Time is running out on giving this guy too many more chances. If he continues to drop passes left and right, then we need to put Lelie in more. He has been the only receiver I’ve seen catch w/ his friggin hands instead of letting the ball hit him! And to think we have Lofton as our WR coach!
September 17th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Otto,
Thats because you are in the press box……right next to the tyrant!
September 17th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Why would I want a pic?…I have met Jerry, a few times…he sees these athletes out in town in very expensive cars,…hot babes,…big houses,..hes beyond jealous,..it consumes him….eating him alive.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
We need to get better in the take away dept. We have 2 int’s. Thats it.
Can’t afford that the way our offense is playing.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
I’m going to put on a tracksuit and run up and down in front of Al’s house. Maybe he’ll throw a few million my way next year? Heck I’d sign for a few hundred thousand. Then I could be the “1# receiver” and stand around on the sidelines all year.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Jim….I was kidding bro…..Nevermind….over the head…..
September 17th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
I actually wanted Oakland to draft Trent Edwards,..hes going to be real good for a long time,…and would have saved about 50 million bucks.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Did you know that Mc Fadden has 210 yards on 30 carries already. Thats frekin rediculous.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
And yes Chaos, Im on Norco again,..to answer your next question…they wouldnt let me on Grants show yesterday.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Otto, it’s not about people reading the blogs, newspapers, or bspn, people can read between the lines themselves and figure out there’s a problem, no one needs to be a Fly on the roof at Raider Headquarters to figure out there are issues here with Al and Kiffin. We get our news from other sources and we piece them together like we do any other news. If you’re going to ask people if they believe this story is true, then people can ask you if you believe ANY story you ever hear is true, and sports news is no different. So on that note, who are we kidding here?
September 17th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Ok Rainman, but I will believe the “story” when hes fired, I wont cry about in hourly in a blog. Bspn reported Ryan was fired last year, I saw him on the sidelines last sunday. You keep reading between the lines Rainman, I will keep going with the facts.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
There are so many suckers out there that simply want to see a train weck that you can never trust anything until it’s a fact or Davis is quoted.
It might be true and it might be someone’s wish. And I’m not talking about a writer. Use your imagination. There are people in that front office that hate Kiffin and I’m talking about people that can force issues.
I wil admit one thing Bruce Allen did a good job of squelshing a lot of this crap. And some of those people forced him out (not Davis)
September 17th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Can you say MBush to the rescue. Theyneed to get him up to speed quick. He can single handedly beat Buffalo.
Kiffin can ue DMC as a decoy or get him on the perimeter instead of running him between the tackles.
Get DMC about 15 touches should be enough and start getting the ball to the WR’s Schelins, Curry and Watkins and JLH. Not to mention ZMiller must be a factor if we’re going to win this game.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Bring it on Priest, who wanted Allen out?….if youre referring to Trask, no way, shes still upset Bruce and Jon are gone.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Whats he even doing on the field with DMAC & Bush on the roster ?
– Editorial comment _ what the heck was Fargas doing split wide right in a passing formation anyway? He has the worst hands of anyone in the Oakland backfield. Even more ridiculous was that JaMarcus Russell saw Fargas had one-on-one coverage (you think?) and waved him downfield, hoping for a big play.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
JL use your own deductive reasoning. The biggest culprit is not here anymore others you may or may not know.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Trent Edwards had not proven anything. You wanted the Raiders to draft him off of what… the whim of adying man that has strong ties to Stanfford.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Single handedly beat Buffalo ?
BHP, you are getting further & further into a deep fog.

Oh give me a break,..if you are referring to Lombardi,..thats a laugh,..he was powerless and he actually tried to go to Tampa with Bruce.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
BHP, you have finally overtaken your good lil buddy OakGlenn in the category of “ridiculous comments”…..period
Jerry get this clown a prize.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
another bad free agent signing was the colts making Bob Sanders the highest paid safety in the league: he is injury prone and has missed at least 4 games for the past 3 -4 years. he looks great when healthy but he is too small to hold up: sort of like trent edwards
September 17th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Bryant Johnson is doing a nice job in SF. He WOULD be our #1 WR in this horrific group we have.
AL I TOLD YOU SIGN BRYANT JOHNSON!!!!!!!!!!
September 17th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Mista thats true,..Davis tried hard to keep Bruce here,..even the press conference both stated that,..and Davis said in that press conference he hopes Bruces “comes home” soon.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Ok, I feel sorry for the players, too. But what about us fans??? Does ANYBODY feel sorry for US??? We have to deal with this crap week in and week out, year in year out. WE’RE PAYING THE FRICKING BILL$ for crying out loud!! The money comes from US!!
September 17th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Powerless?? I think not. maybe you should give it more thought.
IMO MBush under these circumstances for a few games is the perfect HB, he’s a complete back and can take the pounding.
Until Fargas and DMC are up to speed again he’s the perfect HB to turn to.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Our WR group is garbage. Tim Brown is the only quality WR AL has drafted in 20 years!
20 years!!!
Not a problem drafting a good punter or a half a$$ed kicker but WR is such a FK’n problem, why ?
September 17th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
OTTO-YO- MIND, if you have all the facts then prove that Ryan wasn’t fired and re-hired. Where’s your proof Mr. Fact Finder? Dude, you are a clown.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
What a travesty. Javon is such a loser. not even sniffed a reception yet.
hey, is anyone taking Buffalo in their suicide pool???
September 17th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Jim Lofton - yeah, I’m with you on Edwards - I thought we could swing Calvin Johnson and get Edwards - a perfect WCO QB - smart, mobile, good arm - good value in the second round too - kill two birds with one stone - franchise WR and franchise QB - thrown in McFadden this year and we’d be sick (on paper). But I’m happy with JR - Edwards never won, and if he’d been that great a prospect, he would have been taken in the top 15 (like Cutler jumped up the year before) - but I did like him coming out of college - seemed like a good risk - get the stud WR and take a chance on a 2nd round QB with a lot of potential (highest rated high school QB when he was being recruited).
Moving forward, JR won at a big time level, has a once every 20 years type of arm, and has proven himself to be a very disciplined, likable, committed, and motivated guy - can’t pass that up if you need a QB - Edwards just has more around him as far as WR’s and Olineman. JR will probably be much better - but as for winning now, CJ and DMAC on the same team with a decent QB would be nice…
September 17th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
No way Priest,..Lombardi was Bruces coffee boy,…Davis tried to keep Bruce but Bruce wanted to go work with Jon,…so if thats who you think got Bruce to leave youre dead wrong,..nobody forced him, he basically left a year after Jon because he was always year to year in a contract,…he would have left with Jon but couldnt.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
#110
Bruce Allen left on his own free will nobody forced him out.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Whatever jedi,..I havent heard Cal Johnsons name once yet on espn, only time they mention him is when they talk about his bad back,.I never wanted him…or Russell….all I wanted was a trade down but nobody would take the top pick.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Thats my point mista.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Nobody has weight in that organization but AL.
When people leave they either get fired or throw their hands up and bounce on their own. Bruce was probably at a point he couldn’t deal with crazy AL any longer.

September 17th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
calvin just got two td’s against green bay
September 17th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
You’re crazy JL, it’s true Bruce had Davis’s ear but Lombardi also had some powerful allies. I know for a fact. Not only that he was a very good personnel man, whom Big Al trusted. If you think he had no power then there really is no point discussing this because the power struggle between he and Allen was famous in the halls on Harbor Bay Parkway.
Gruden desparately needed Allen and persuaded him to join him. However Mr Davis should never have let him go.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Trent edwards would have a hard time beating out Andrew Walter all things being eqaul.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Good for him,..was that after they were down by 21 and GB laid off?
September 17th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

September 17th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
McCown beat out Walter..
In some other organization I would agree A Walter would likely beat out T Edwards.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Priest you havent convinced me,…You think youre more hip then me on whats goin down at hq?…I doubt it,..true I lost my main source there but I still email daily with 3 others there who arent janitors…Lombardi had zero to do with Bruce leaving,…he really enjoyed the team he and Jon were,..when Jon left, traded for nothing, Bruce wanted to leave that day also,..but couldnt, he worked that one year contract and left to work with Jon,…you know squat Priest.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

your right we should have drafted trent no. 1 overall.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Uh huh! and you know it all right?? Well I know for a fact that Bruce didn’t want to leave until he lost the power struggle.
In fact if it were up to him he’d still be there. B4 that he basically worked for the league if I’m not mistaken. Bruce loved it there. He was the spokesman for the organization.

I totaly agree with that, Johnson was the 3rd WR behind Boldin and Fitzgerald and he still made some plays… that’s pretty hard to do!
Walker should be kept, who knows if he can bounce back and if not, he should be kept as an evidence, of what Davis does wrong here!
If Fargas and DMAC are out for sunday, we need to throw… Bush can’t carry the load and make big plays just like DMAC and huggybear do. It all depends on the Defense… if they don’t perform and force some Turnovers we lose!
I meantioned it many times before: Trade our 1st round pick for Anquan Boldin, he’s the real deal.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
I’ll take Bruce back anyday, Gruden hell no.

September 17th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
bhp yeah it was a joke: a off hand shot at Jimmy. Jamarcus was the right pick. He has shown poise, patience, and seems to be taking to the coaches well.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Let me ask something else… If you have some inside information, please enlighten the rest of us regarding the Kiffin situation. What has really transpired?
September 17th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Crickets…..
September 17th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
BHP,
Like I have told you before Jaarcus is on the right path. He is making good reads, checking down or throwing the ball away when nothing is there: i think he has taken two sacks and has not thrown an int yet. He isn’t going to be just a game manager because he does have the biggest cannon around, so seeing him develop into an effective game manager is exciting to me because i know that as soon as we have some players develop around him and dmac, it will be very special: who knows what a year will bring with the development of Mario Henderson, JAMES marten, Chaz schillens, Johnny lee higgins, and Arman Shields.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:52 pm

Huge LOL at the Raiders using a national columnists’ op ed as documentation against Kiffin. Remember, this is the same media no longer to be trusted by the Raiders. Just goes to show how much of a baby Al Davis is. He has all but denounced the press in recent years, yet as soon as someone punches up a column that makes him look good, he’s on for a piggy back ride. Any of you who thought this man had any kind of resolve can now see why so many of us don’t take him seriously for a second.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Sac Bee poll:
80% want Kiffin to stay.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:21 am
add one more vote for Lane
September 18th, 2008 at 12:25 am
And before the Davis crowd bashes Sacramento, remember that the Oakland Tribune ran a similar poll back in February that had 90% on Kiffin’s side. In fact, I think the 90% wanted Al Davis to retire. I think the poll was regarding who fans would rather have gone; Davis or Kiffin. 90% said the crazy one should be out.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:27 am
He felt like Brad Pitt???
Did the Head coach of the Oakland Raiders just say he felt like Brad Pitt???
I’m not even going to touch that one.
That is just downright disturbing.
Is it just me or is Lane Kiffin enjoying all the attention a little too much?
Just Win Baby.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:30 am
Fire Kiffin, I don’t know why I waste the bandwidth, but I’m going to ask you guys this every time. Of the people willing to take the HC job in Oakland, who will do a better job than Kiffin, and how will he do it?
Note to all readers: This question is yet to be answered by people who want Kiffin fired.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:33 am
BBB, #7
Art Shell is a total different situation than Rathman. Art hadn’t coached in over a decade, Rathman has been a coach since ‘97. Art shell won rings in the old school, Rathman won in an offense very similar to the one that we run. Pretty lame argument u make with Shell comparison and you know it.
Many want the org to come out and give kiffin a vote of confidence. Why should they do that??? They are unhappy with kiffins perfomance so they are putting his job in jeopardy much like kiffin did to several players.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:36 am
I don’t know about those first three paragraphs Jerry. What do McFadden’s and Fargas’s injuries have to do with how much money they make? They got their injuries busting thier butt on the field. Kelly made a serious mistake but he’s accepted responsibily for it and how much money he makes has nothing to do with his mistake.
It’s kind of like you’re stretching all of these things to prove that the Raiders are dysfunctional when in fact these things happen to all teams.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:38 am
The Raiders and Al can forget Bruce, Gruden or any other established coach or GM for the future unless Al retires and the whole front office and scout staff is cleared out.
I would like to see that happen, start from scratch and hire someone like Marty for GM that makes a statement and he has a no bull rep, him and Kiffin would make a team I’m willing to bet. However that won’t happen because of Trask and her ilk. If you ask me once Al got feeble, is when the team went to hell. The ability to persuade him instead of him just going out and making the decision himself is what doomed the Raiders. If I had Al’s ear I would convince him to do something radical and not like fire the head coach, that’s what everyone expects him to do, but he won’t because he has just enough stones left of pride and won’t want to appear wrong.
1. Hire significant GM
2. Clean house
3. Hand the reigns over
The best thing he could do for the Raiders.
If he should fire Kiffin then the season is lost and next years too.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:39 am
When the raiders start assuring everyone that lane won’t be fired, look for him to be fired shortly thereafter.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:42 am
Forget THREE paragraphs. Were you sitting on a prickly bush when you wrote this?!
September 18th, 2008 at 12:42 am
EnglandRaider, what Jerry’s critical of is Al spending the kind of money he did on high risk players, be them injury prone or too wild off the field, or both, as is the case with Walker. Do you honestly not understand that?
September 18th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Severe Raider, what’s “brothers united”? Is that the Davis kool aid crowd’s answer to The Collective? Did you guys try to call yourselves “band of brothers” first, and got a warning letter from HBO, or something?
September 18th, 2008 at 12:46 am
Brothers United is a bit sexist too, isn’t it? What about female Davis loyalists? What’s Trask to do? She’s no “brother”. Guess she’ll have to join The Collective.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:48 am
And what do black fans think of “brothers united”? Kind of a head scratcher for them, is it not? Is it really wise for a group of bony white 30-somethings to be walking around East Oakland calling themselves “Brothers United”?
September 18th, 2008 at 12:50 am
boo brothers united …yay collective
September 18th, 2008 at 12:55 am

Dick V - thanks for the info
getting back to the game v. the bills…bush can handle the load, but we have to have a passing game and we need one of our WR’s to step up. Javon, earn your damn money.

Oh, internet tough guy. Keep it up, and I’ll tell your mom. She’s right here.

The Al Davis crowd resorting to violence. What a shock. Don’t let them deter you, Collective. Make no mistake, Severeretard’s macho cyber mouth is a shot across the bow at the collective. And don’t let him give you this crap about the “brothers united” being for what’s best for the Raiders. What’s best for the Raiders is Al Davis being out of football operations. Period. Severeretard is not for what’s best for the Raiders. He’s for what’s best for Al Davis, and using this unity b.s. as a guilt trip. Now, we can add cyber tough guy to his resume`. What a loser.

Florida Pete… I think you’re onto something.
We all know that Kiffin poor mouths our WR’s and QB saying that we can’t pass.
What if we busted loose and aired it out against the Bills, pulling an NFL version of the Rope a Dope?

LOL @ slender build

Walker has missed more Raider practice and game time than Cliff Branch missed in his entire career.
This is getting old.

kiffin is an idiot with no loyalty keep him to the end of the season then fire him unless we make the playoffs

Scottish Raider..

And don’t label me as a Davis apologist either. The men who you so boldly trash here (Ryan, Kiffin, Davis, Allen, Lombardi, Shell, etc.) have put the time and effort in to earn the responsibilities they’ve had for the Raiders. For better or worse, their role with the team reflects their guts, maturity and talent. SHow some yourself if you want to make a difference. You fruitcakes just want to hold hands in a circle and align your chakras until the team starts winning.
The “collective” members are Raider fans for the same reason that Elton John likes biker bars.

If Al keeps wasting money on players that don’t perform he wont have any for the players that deserve to get paid.

[...] [Raiders] Raiders WR Javon Walker Can’t Get Through Practices Raiders WR Javon Walker couldnt complete practice on Wednesday because of his hamstring injury and his status remains in doubt. When asked if his continued absence has hurt, caoch Lane Kiffin was frank. "Yeah, it has. Heres the guy who was supposed to be the No. 1 receiver when he comes in," Kiffin said. "Unfortunately hes had some issues and hes had the injuries, and here we go again. Were warming up for the game Sunday hoping that he would get to play. He didnt feel very good then. Today, he comes out, we talked bout it being a big week for him. He played well against Buffalo last year at the start of the year (9 catches, 119 yards). I started talking to him yesterday about it, about a big week, this team needs you, then unfortunately, halfway through practice, he cant go anymore." Walkers inability to finish practice continues a trend in which the lead receiver has been unable for one reason for another to step up and assume his role. Source: Contra Costa Times [...]

I hope this whole “coach on the hot seat “is a bad episode of Punked . Then Al and Kiffin pop out from inside AL’s limo at a scheduled Raiders press conference and tell the media you’ve been Raidered.

La Milicia Nancy,
Stick to soccer, and other euro-fruit sports (like handball) where men wear dolphin shorts. You know you are just claiming to be a Raider fan in a pathetic attempt to appropriate a masculine persona.
