Realtors eye Kiffin home
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 at 2:03 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders coach Lane Kiffin told the San Diego media on a conference call Wednesday the job security issue is taking more of a toll on his expanding family than it is on himself.
“That’s the unfortunate thing about this business and this situation here,” Kiffin said. “My wife’s pregnant with our third child, and it’s due in January, so she has a lot of concerns . . . You know how this thing is, all of a sudden she’s got realtors coming by the house asking if we’re putting the house up.
“So it’s tough, especially on a pregnant woman that doesn’t know where she’s gonna be when her child’s delivered. If there was any regret, that’s what it would be.”
If Kiffin is correct, assembling a new coaching staff in the event of a purge will be difficult. Several coaches are in the final years of their deals, including offensive coordiantor Greg Knapp, line coach Tom Cable, running backs coach Tom Rathman and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
Kiffin reiterated that he has no plans to resign in part because he sold a number of players and coaches on joining him in Oakland.
“A number of them were very worried about coming here, which is most of the coaches that you contact in the hiring process have a lot of concerns about coming here,” Kiffin said. “They took a chance . . . so the last thing I’m going to do is bail on them.”
Kiffin may not have talked to Davis since before the opener, but said he is getting support from outside the organization.
“I’ve had a number of calls from head coaches in the NFL, some that I don’t have very close relationships with,” Kiffin said. “I’m just seeing a lot of encouraging words from head coaches and some general managers as well.”
When asked if one of those coaches was Mike Shanahan, who had his own battles with Davis some 20 years ago, Kiffin laughed.
“I’m not going to go into which guys have called me, but it’s been very good,” Kiffin said. “There’s been an outreach of support from a number of people in the league, coaches and general managers.”
It would be reasonable to guess one of those coaches would be Norv Turner, the Chargers coach who was fired by Davis following the 2005 season Turner, not surprisingly, wanted no part of the Kiffin issue when speaking to Bay Area writers by conference call.
When asked about the difficulties of coaching the Raiders, Turner said, “I think you know that’s a question I’m not going to answer.”
At this point, Davis can only wish Kiffin knew how to say the same thing.
Practice is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. and I’ll post an update regarding which players appear to be practicing after the media window closes . . .

This is why SD will beat OAK this sunday:
1)Justin Fargas is out
2)Our best DT is out (we only have 3 DT’s available)
3)Deangelo Hall SUCKS, he is always playing soft coverage
4)Mcfadden is hurt
5)No pressure on Rivers & soft coverage by Hall= Chris Chambers will have a huge day
6)Our best receiver this year is a guy that got cut by the 49ers. (Ashley Lellie) LMAO!!!
7)Javon Walker shouldve been born a girl!
Just keep these things in mind and then look at how dead on I am with my prediction on sunday!

MR Good read #575 PRIOR POST. It paints a picture that we all suspected. The crypt keeper is minimizing his exposure for good reasons. He’s obviously lost it (the mind that is) and now everybody is finding that fa ct out. Too bad for the limited partners. They’ve learned a valuable lesson. To wit, 20% of squat is just a lot of squat.
From Davis to the Limited Partners, SQUATZUH!

What does Kiffin think he is gaining by being so forthcoming about the owner/coach melodrama? All he needs to say is this:
“The issue of my future employment here is an unfortunate distraction to my staff and players as we work to improve the Raiders. I stand by my previous comments on the subject, but from this point forward I will focus strictly on the real work of coaching the team. The only questions I will address are those about our team as we prepare for the next game — a decision that is mine alone and not made at the behest of anyone in management.”

MR–
Your points 3, 5 and 6 are the key points a lot of people would rather ignore.
“de”Angelo Hall has been nothing but a MAJOR disappointment. I am not optimistic with him having to face either Vincent Jackson or Chris Chambers on every down. Get Stanford Routt warmed up!
Rob Ryan’s pass defense, with our talent, is ranked 26th in the league. That should give us all pause with Phillip Rivers and their receivers and Antonio Gates.
Javon (1 practice a day) Walker is a biggest free agent bust of the year. And that says a lot with “de”Angelo! If Walker had practiced on time, maybe he would have the chemistry with Russell. Maybe if Walker worked harder (like Kiffin asked) he would not have pulled his hamstring! The problems with the passing game start with Javon. Not Kiffin, Not Russell, Not the O-Line, Not even Davis….It starts with Javon Walker!
September 24th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Heres the deal.
Former Coaches may not have liked how things went with Davis and some may genuiniely dislike him, but none of them F*k with him.
I don’t read alot of “He’s the biggest A hole” comments you know what I mean?
If not respected, he’s feared.

Just so it’s clear, I don’t advocate Kiffin throwing the ball, just for the sake of failing, so that Jam can get better for next year. Passing the ball, opens up the running game, which opens up the passing game, which…
Now tell me again why Kiffin doesn’t throw more often.
So far this year:
Passing:391 yds on 62 atts-3 TD’s-6.3 yds/att-0 TO’s
Rushing:548 yds on 107 atts-3 TD’s-5.1 yds/att-2 TO’s
September 24th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Why have we not got a DT yet? We only have 2 real ones. The ones we have are not in game shape yet. We do not need anyone great just a big body for now.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Heres the headline:
“Kiffin out, Millen in”
Just to show he’s still got it, Millen levels Davis with a walker crumpling blind side tackle.
Awesome…
September 24th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Kiffin WILL be with another NFL team after he is fired here. Could it be KC? Cincy? Chicago? Best believe that Kiffin will be considered an excellent O.C or QB coach candidate when he leaves. A few teams will certainly interview him for head coaching positions as well.
Meanwhile, bring on James Lofton….and can you imagine what next year could look like with an entirely new offensive coaching staff made up of…..Good luck JaMarcus.
Oh, and make no mistake. Davis will bring Ryan back too!
September 24th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Remember when there used to be more Raider fans than Chargers fan when we played an away game in San Diego? those were the days!
Raiders need to be the more physical football team on Sunday. This game falls on the o-line. Last time we played the Chargers our o-line crumbled. Harris, Henderson, Grove, Morris & Green didn’t play that game though.
Sims, Gallery, Newberry, Carlisle & McQuistan did… Grove & Green were injured. Henderson & Morris were inactive. Time to separate the men from the boys
September 24th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I think Kiffin will go college IF he’s let go.
who knows, if he got a gig with an established team with vet presence and some talent, he might be able to get creative.
Or he can stay in Oakland and mold the very young talent he has here and pray theirs a killer receiver avail in next years draft.
and that Spider man is ready to rawk…
September 24th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
OR KIFFIN COULD BE A MAN AND SAY:
“Just like any NFL coach, the two factors that determine my future employment are one, improving our play, and two, winning. Had Art Shell improved and won, or had Norv Turner improved and won, I would be working somewhere else. If I do not produce, I will eventually move on, which is the same standard applied at every NFL franchise. So today I am working on winning games and keeping the best job I have ever had — coach of the Raiders.”
THEN YOU WILL BE A MAN MY SON.

Javon Walker can prove anything when he only gets two passes thrown his way. He caught both of those. JaMarcus can’t get a rythym when he passes 3 times in whole. They have to balance out the play calling a little more. He needs aleast 25-30 passes a game or he won’t develop. Kiff needs to be more balance in offensive attack.

BART,
Here’s my best guess:
1. K.C couldn’t stop our running game and our defense was shutting down their offense. Sort of like how teams attacked us in 2006. No need to throw if the opponent can’t stop your run and can’t score.
2. Our defense had slammed Buffalo for the most part during the game. In fact, the 7 points Buffalo did score was the result of a coverage sacka & fumble. In the 3rd QTR, our defense and special teams were playing really well and had us up by two scores. No need to risk a pass, again with our limited receivers, with such a lead and the defense playing so well.
3. When we were pressured to score in the 4th QTR, Russell did score an 84 yard pass. When our defense failed, we tried to run out the clock. Our running game wasn’t successful. They did pass on 3rd and 10. But again, wasn’t successful

Lost in the *ahem* loss was the fact the Raiders core D looked good.
The O line wasn’t flagged every other play and well, Kiffin didn’t get fired.

I think we will be ok withour Gerrard Warrent. Our D line is stacked!! Deangelo will get better, just takes some time. They need to just let Jamarcus trhough the ball more and we will win. We are the best, we rule. Number one baby. yeah.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
JR CAN develope the way Kiffin is using him. Look at the mold Big Ben was used in. Hell, he is still using it. The Steelers RARELY if EVER throw more then 25 times a game.
JR DOES NOT have the accuracy (I’m sure it’s due to lack of time in the pocket), Receivers, or vision (will come with more game experiance) to pass the ball 30 times a game with out turning it over.
When he tried to execute on quick screens he has fumbled or overthrew his intended receiver. He will get there and Kiffin is the one who will get him there.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
oh crap.
If the Raiders hire Millen, between his WR drafts and Al Davis’ love for DBs, we will have 53 players who are
5′ 11 to 6′3 tall, weigh about 185 to 200 lbs, and run 4.2 to 4.3 40s.

Kiffin will have to open up the passing game against San Diego. He is also going to have to get McFadden involved in the passing game and more runs to the outside. Without Fargas, I just don’t see us doing well running between the tackles.
I would like to see JLH or Schillens get the number 2 receiver spot. Curry is too slow and has dropped too many balls. And given our throwing rate, those drops are magnified.
I am hoping for a win but not optimistic. Why? “de”Angelo Hall and Rob Ryan….

mooseknuckle,
Kiffin doesn’t know what he is conservative or a shoot from the hip coach. Ending the Bills game with two dives into the teeth of the Bills defense (when they were getting hot) and a deep sideline pass into triple coverage, leaving the timeouts on the scoreboard is typical for his experience. We all know Ryan’s defense has been giving up leads for five years, and with the Warren injury and Wilson out of the game-why not throw a screen or run off tackle anything but just plain giving up.

IF the same defense that played the first 2 1/2 quarters aginst Buffalo shows up I think the Raiders have a chance.
LT is hurt, Rhoidboy is out, Rivers is the QB, Phillips is hurt, Gates isn’t the same as last year. The biggest reason that I think the Raiders have a chance is the Chargers have Norv. Its time for his meltdown already.

While I agree with Kiffin’s approach, you do bring up a good point of throwing late in the game given our terrible defense. I think if McFadden’s toe and sliding issues weren’t there, I think youwould have seen a few more screen passes.
Remember, the receivers that the Raiders have are TERRIBLE! The minute Kiffin starts ordering more passes, best believe you will see more INTs. I really hope that Javon Walker steps the “f” up! Also, someone get Curry on the bench.

Casper,
Everytime we ran a screen, it didn’t work. Our lineman were not moving to the ball. I have watched the tape 3 times now, and saw they were all moving slower then snot.
The simple fact is that there are reasons you draw up certain plays and run them. It was put out there perfectly by Kyle Vanden Bosch yesterday on Sirius radio, where he said that sometimes teams will do something whether or not it works to get it on film and to not show your tendancies. I think for the most part, Kiffin was confident in the 23 that the Offense put on the board and relyed on the defense to step up like it did the other qtrs of the game. At some point, whether it is Offense, Defense or Special Teams, you have to rely on one to do their job. It just so happens that the offense did their job and scored the points, and special teams did ok to hold them deep and return to the bills side of the field, but the defense mailed in the 4th qtr.
All be it, Warren and Wilson were out which were huge, but thats why the backups are on the team, to make up for it. I just think Ryan kept the same playcalling as if they were still in the game and did not force Edwards to act like the 2nd year player he is. He should have thrown a different look at him to make him think too much and turn the ball over. Imagine that. 1 Turnover or change in possession is all we needed. They had 1 timeout.

I said it before. “Jake Grove looks fat and slow” He has trouble firing out and getting second level period.
He’s alot of reason scraping LBs shut down plays, but in the deep end against the Bills, it was Bills depth (fresh guys)waaaaay too conservative play calling and a burned out O line that got whomped on those last 2 3 and outs.

JR throwing the pass down the sidelines to curry on 3rd and 10 was not what Kiffin wanted. He has to go through his progressions. He locked on to Curry and over threw him. Lelie was “covered” by a LB. Even Lelie can can put moves on a LB. Had JR seen that insted of locking onto Stonehands, MAYBE, just maybe they could have picked up the 1st and run the clock out.

NC-Chaos–
Great post. The telling stat for me is this:
Our pass defense ranks 26th in the NFL!
We knew our offense would struggle a bit with the passing game (ranked last). We knew we would be able to run the ball (ranked 3rd).
Now, considering the talent on defense and the lack of talent with our receiving corps….shouldn’t our defense be the ones carrying this ball club

S&B,
I completely agree with you. I do think the defense should carry the bulk of the load. But I will say, it is the third game, and they are still getting their wind, but that should not be any excuse. It has to do with wanting to win more then the opposition.
Dude I played ball with a bunch of guys who could not play what so ever. I would throw to a wide open reciever and he would drop the ball(IE Curry) but I put would bring him back and let him know that he is not trying hard enough for me and reminded him that the win was about the team, and I don’t see the defense doing that right now. The offense is actually showing that they are acting as a unit. It shows that we are 3rd in team rushing. I think it is smart that Kiff is putting the reins on JRuss so he doesn’t end up like Cryin Ryan and quit. He needs to e brought through the motions slowly so that he learns what to look for. Crap this was his what 4th game. Dude is still young and the NFL game tempo is so much faster then college. He needs time, which we don’t have right now, but he needs to develope the right way in order to be real successful. I think Kiff gives him that opportunity. You have to remember, who did Kiff learn the most of what he knows from? 2 of the greatest coaches on defense that have been, Carrol and Monte. I am not sure where he got his offensive play calling from, could be romper room, but he understands how to develope talent!

Unbelievable how Al Davis is completely out of touch and has lost his marbles. It’s sucks to hear that Knapp, and espeically Cable and Rathman are in the final year of there deals. THAT FREAKIN STINKS!!
Knapp is probably gone for sure….and the old man better try and keep Cable and Rathman or else….hear we go again with a whole new outdated crap offensive system and terminology for Russell and the whole freakin offense to learn? Funny I read where a GM of another team was quoted as saying. That he would not hire Kiffin not only as a head coach. But he stated Kiffin does not have what it takes to be hired as a defensive or offensive coordinator in the NFL.
The GM went on to say that since training camp that the things Kiffin was saying to the media were under cutting his team and players. He stated Kiffin was childish and came across as a whiner. He also stated that Kiffin did nothing but harm to being able to be hired other than a position coach with his actions.
I will say it one more time 5-19 as a NFL coach to date. And looking to be 1-3 at the bye week already this year. The kid made his bed with his big mouth now let him stew in it.

The 4th response is priceless! We will loose to SD no matter who we have in or SD has out because we are a looser team. We are that because of Al Davis and we will be that for at least 1 year past his death. The raiders are beyond a joke. They are a team to be felt sorry for. People feel sorry for Kiffin and the players etc. The only folks not to be felt sorry for are Al and the idiot, idiot, idiot fans that think kiffin not AL is the problem.

Wakeup - Al is the major problem. Kiffin is part of the problem

Freakin Kiffin is loosing respect! I mean he was keeping it gangsta & now hes snivelling! WTF dude make up your mind!

Grow up Kiffin. Anyone who’s ever had this job knew before coming in that Al runs the show. I totally agree that Al is/has been ruining this team, but I can’t excuse Kiffin’s behavior.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t be speaking his mind but he should be more careful in the words he chooses.
By the way Al….thanks for creating the next Mike Shanahan.
The only good to come out of this is now the Al Davis situation has moved passed being a joke. It seems to now be in a more serious light. As in Al is seriously f’ing up this team. No one will want to coach or play for the Raiders.

you people will believe and comment on everything a writer writes, won’t you? they have been saying kiffin will be let go since the last game of last year. fat boy peter king says “kiffin is not a lock to stay in oakland” and the world of writers had a story forever. he gave no details or reasons. just a last second comment designed to generate a story that wasn’t there. and everybody, including the raider nation, jumped into the fray keeping the story alive for 9 and a half months. think about it people. there is only 1 credible source in the raider organization, AL DAVIS. if it doesn’t come from him, then there is nothing to it. remember this has been said since the END OF DECEMBER!!!!! the only reason this is still being reported is because it sells papers, gets people to the website, and keeps the writers name in the spotlight. there is 0 proof to the rumors so stop going on about it, people. whether or not big al wrote a resignation letter for kiffin, i don’t know. but remember this, the barry bonds testimony for the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S GRAND JURY got leaked. are you gonna tell me that the raiders security is better than the government and that this letter has NEVER surfaced. this seems like a seriously fabricated story that lives because the raiders organization never talks to the media and they don’t like it. if you can’t get a story , make one up. right, peter king?

Does this biatch know how to say NO COMMENT! He fricking cries about everything.
September 24th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Here’s the plan Al has had all along. He hasn’t fired Kiffin yet (vagueness all along) because he was waiting for Detroit to fire Millen so he can hire him as the new coach, after he fires Kiffin tomorrow. That’s my prediction! After 40 years of being a Raiders fan, I’ve about had enough of the old demented one. Join the protest, flip that Raiders tag on the front of your vehicle upside down. Enough of Al’s madness. Demand that he resigns.

Heres the deal.
Former Coaches may not have liked how things went with Davis and some may genuiniely dislike him, but none of them F*k with him.
I don’t read alot of “He’s the biggest A hole” comments you know what I mean?
If not respected, he’s feared.”
Are you kidding? Feared by whom?? Aside from his normal snowstorm of frivolous lawsuits, Al Davis carries NO threat! I love my Raiders, but they’ve been the worst team in the league for 5 years now! Yet another season is slipping away while this B.S. drama continues to unfold. We’re probably facing yet another coaching change, which will result in starting at square one all friggin’ over again. Al Davis is feared? What an unbelievable statement! Pittied. Laughed at. Felt sorry for. But hell no, he isn’t feared!
September 25th, 2008 at 8:08 am
Been a fan since the AFL…. NEVER thought it would come to this….
Nnamdi21… dude you should be writing SNL skits! WAY FUNNY! “Just to show he’s still got it, Millen levels Davis with a walker crumpling blind side tackle”
September 25th, 2008 at 9:26 am
After not calling any of his remaining times-out, Kiffin should be packing for KC. I liked the guy, but come on, a highschool coach would have saved time to allow our SeaBass to kick a long fieldgoal. He needs to go to an in-division foe, so we can rub his face in it. Kiff is not a Shanahan and won’t haunt us.

its a disgrace to have an owner like Al davis and a fan like Nnamdi21. There are more of you who resemble them and don’t worry, I’ll call you out too. You guy’s suck. How can any sane man (which al isn’t) put a family through this. Kiffins on his third kid, wife pregnant and he’s being jerked around like garbage. Davis has no respect and has self delusional visions of himself being some kind of lame mafia guy who “Means Business”. What a pathetic loser who never left the 70’s behind. the guy is dumb. washed up. pathetic. classless. spiteful. childish. immature. selfish. greedy. The way he became the owner of this organization is coming back to haunt him. He talks about loyalty, but he was not loyal in how he took this team from its original owners. He is paranoid and I am glad to see him crumble in what is his own making. May you lay in the garbage you set for yourself davis. Enjoy !

I do not like Lane Kiffin. He has shifty eyes.
