Cable stresses fast pace
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 at 4:11 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from Wednesday’s post-practice press briefing with coach Tom Cable and interviews with available players:
– Other than failing to recognize he was supposed to break down a special teams huddle at the beginning of practice and seeming confused when stepping to the microphone at the end, nothing seemed indecisive about Cable’s first day as coach.
“Hold on a second . . . do I start this?,” Cable said. “Bear with me a minute.”
Cable was told that since he’s the coach, he can do whatever he wants.
“Oh, really?,” he said with a laugh.
– With systems of football already in place and a quarter of a season in the books, there will be no dramatic changes. One minor change _ the practice of running plays over and over until they get them right that sometimes extended Raiders practices by 20 minutes or more under Lane Kiffin has been junked.
“I will say this to you _ we’re going to stay on schedule. Practice isn’t going to run over. If it’s scheduled to be an hour and 35 minutes or whatever it is, it’s going to be an hour and 35,” Cable said. “We’ll get in, get the work done right and get off the field so we can go in, teach and learn, and get better that way.
“The work will be tempo, tempo, tempo, as fast as we can go and keep pushing that, because I just believe, if you play faster than the other guy he’s going to give up somewhere in that game, so that will always be our deal, to keep pressing them. So, that may be the only difference. If it’s 10 reps, it will be 10 and be done. If it’s 15, it’s 15 and get done. Whatever the situation is, we’ll hold true to it.”
– Rest assured that if Kiffin had to go, the offensive line is on board with Cable as the replacement.
“Coach Cable is going to be awesome,” tackle Kwame Harris said. “He’s done a lot for me, just playing my position since the start of this year. I think what people can expect out of him is a very straightforward, honest, sincere coach who loves this game.”
Guard Robert Gallery said the “tempo” theme was stressed immediately.
“Once we got to the team portion of it, the tempo was a little faster,” Gallery said. “He made that a point this morning that when get in a situation, JaMarcus has been here long enough, he knows it, and the faster we get in and out (of the huddle), the easier it’s going to be on game day.”
– Said Gallery of the “distraction” factor: “I think everyone was tired of hearing about it. I don’t think it was helping us to come in and hear about it every week.”
– It’s doubtful you’ll hear Cable talk openly about his team’s shortcomings the way Kiffin often did. While falling short of Joe Bugel’s memorable “multiple Super Bowls” forecast, Cable is talking about playing in January.
“We’re a good team, we’re going to run for the playoffs, and that’s our deal,” Cable said. “We’re not going to back down, and we’re not afraid to say that. Because you have to if you believe in yourself.”
– Justin Fargas is in his sixth season and is playing for his fifth head coach. So he can be excused for shrugging off Tuesday’s events as just another day at the office.
When asked if it was the strangest day of his Raiders career, Fargas shrugged.
“I don’t know if it was the strangest. It was another day,” Fargas said. “Just shows that change can come overnight and you’ve got to move on and do your job.”
– Fargas, who became a 1,000-yard rusher under Kiffin last season, was sorry to see him go but ready to move on.
“From what I seen and I felt, everybody supported Lane,” Fargas said. “We were happy to play for him. There’s just a situation that happens in this business and you have to be able to move on and, like I said before, do your job. But, nah, guys liked Lane and guys like Cable too. So we’re going to play for our head coach and it’s Tom Cable and we’re going to play for him.”
– Cable doesn’t want any stragglers. He’s not big on team rules.
“What I believe in is be early, we’ll get done early, and you’re going to play your guts out for each other,” Cable said. “That’s all that matters. Be where you’re supposed to be when you’re supposed to be there. That’s plenty of rules. We’re grown men.”
– The Raiders practiced in shells and Cable said the big emphasis was getting in a quick-tempo workout and getting people healthy during the bye week. Guard Cooper Carlisle (ankle) practiced and was limited after being inactive against San Diego. Cable said he thought Carlisle would be ready to face the Saints on Oct. 12.
Also limited were S Gibril Wilson (back), LB Isaiah Ekejiuba (shoulder) and RB Michael Bush (quad), none of which are considered serious. RB Darren McFadden (toe) and Fargas (groin) were out, as was TE Ben Troupe (foot) and T Seth Wand (knee).
Fargas said he expected to be ready to face New Orleans.
– The Raiders practice Thursday before taking the weekend off and returning Monday.
Sapp sounds off
Former Raiders defensive tackle Warren Sapp held nothing back in assessing the Raiders situation in his role as an analyst on Showtime’s Inside the NFL.
“I remember the first two weeks I was there, we played a pre-season game. Somebody came up one time and said, ‘We’re going deep right here, dog.’ I said, how do you know? He said, ‘The phone just rang.’
“All the preparation that goes into a week of work is there, the practicing that you have to put in order to do these things, sometimes he (Al Davis) messed with that part of it and that’s what kills you.”
More Sapp:
On players signing on to play with the Raiders
Sapp: Nobody tells you how bad it is. I remember seeing Trace Armstrong after spending my four years there. I wanted to choke the life out of him. I wanted to kill him . . . and then Phillip Buchanon was there. I said, Phil, why didn’t you tell me this? I said, you all did wrong. Because any person that calls me on the telephone, (I tell them) do not go anywhere near Oakland.
On Lane Kiffin being fired, fair or unfair
Sapp: Way unfairly. He came in there with a change of mentality. The whole system. He changed how the locker room looked because it was going to take that kind of overhaul for Oakland to become the proud franchise we all knew it was.
On Al Davis
Sapp: He is the common equation. You take him out, put him at home watching film or whatever he is doing – you have a functioning football organization. But once he comes over the top, he goes and starts moving it around . . .
“Al Davis knows football – it’s just ‘60s and ‘70s football. That’s what it is. He’s thinking that Cliff Branch is outside and (Jim) Plunkett is dropping back and you can throw it 80 yards down the field – deep ball, deep ball, deep ball.”

I can’t believe that’s still going on - my dad told me about the “phone calls” that came from Davis to throw deep (he worked in ad sales with the Raiders for a bit) 20 years ago in L.A. - I can’t believe Davis still does that - maybe the phone calls aren’t necessary since Knapp called plays last week sitting in the box next to davis - just need a couple cans and a string or prison style morse code taps on the wall.
Anyway, that’s a shocker - I mean I kind of got it in the 80’s, we were still running the Al Davis/Sid Gilman (now better known as the Shell/Walsh offense)offense back then, so he knew the playbook backwards and forwards. Oh well, Cable looks like another yes man, dumping rules, dumping extra reps until they get it right, etc. I guess he had to make a couple changes just so he could show the team he was his own man and exercise a little authority, but we’ll see if he can light that fire we need to finish - I do like the vote of confidence in JaMarcus, he needs to take his lumps - he’s already proven he can operate a safe and conservative offense, and he’s proven he can hit the deep ball and fit it into tight spaces - open this sucker up, throw in more west coast slants, quick outs, and short crossing patterns, along with some trick plays to keep the D honest and protect our tackles a little bit, and let’s see what happens.
Like I said before, you can’t finish until you play to win rather than play to not lose. We all know that, and I won’t complain if Rob Ryan keeps blitzing when we have leads deep into the 4th quarter and we get burned and lose the game that way - if we have to be in a man scheme as our base D, then bring those corners up and send some extra rushers and make the QB beat you in under 2 seconds with a short pass - we must dictate the game with this D scheme and soft man prevent doesn’t cut it. I would love if we could succeed eventually just rushing 3 or 4 guys, but if it’s not working, send more.

October 1st, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Hmmm - I’m rethinking the whole approach of practicing until you get it right, could be a good call - there are no second chances on the field on gameday, so it could be beneficial to stress that point, and force people to get it right the first time, every time. That may take a while to sink in, but the first time the raiders win with that approach, it should definetly help them focus more and perhaps it will help. We’ll see, but there is a good side to that, and it works well with taking the training wheels off JaMarcus and increasing the tempo of the practice.
I like it - it’s a decision with some sound principles behind it - at least this coach is likable and known to the players and has charisma - we needed that to preserve any chance for a good season -
Can’t wait to see the difference of philosophies show up on the field against the Saints - I expect much more passing to the WR’s.

Here is my question to Sapp, and I apologies if someone has already asked it. How do you explain the Raiders providing better defense and specifically better run defense (minus the run my LT last week) WITHOUT Sapp this year and more or less it is the same group of DL as it was last year.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Cable,
If the players are not running the plays correctly in practice, they aren’t going to run it well in the game. Be sure to stay on them and demand excellence in execution.
Especially with guys like Javon Walker and our receiving corps. If any group needs to run things till they get it right its that group.!!!!!!!
Same thing with your offensive tackles.

October 1st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Terrapin’s Final Thoughts:
I read no one’s comments - not selfish of me - just busy and all with the markets. Its a helluva time and doubly so for the Raiders.
If any of you are actually justifying this move; then you are truly the super-kool-aid drinkers. You must be drinking it straight from Al Davis’ jock with all due respect. Open you eyes MEN - don’t be led around like some damned dogs.
Its a brilliant move to give Cable the job - both from a player standpoint and a fan standpoint. It makes losing Kiffin a little easier to bare doesn’t it? Why? Because Cable has already received high praise from both - very high praise to be frank.
But don’t be fooled by this trickery. The common equation is still the same like Sapp, Gannon, et al keep reiterating - that being Al Davis.
How the hell do you screw this up? 90% of the fans out there INCLUDING THE PLAYERS (as I cannot stress that point enough) could see this ball club headed for great things. But it wasn’t Al Davis’ way of doing things. Kiffin was too brash.
So what will history have to say about this? Will Kiffin be the next HC to go on to win a Super Bowl after getting fired by Davis. Shall I recant those that have already done it? Shanahan, White, Gruden, and one or two others I’m forgetting.
I’ll tell you what…history is being written at this moment and history is writing off Al Davis. He is ruining is very own legacy he strives so hard to maintain - its over - the cats nearly out the bag on this one. The fat lady has sung. Damn near every public persona you see out there is discredited Davis - even his very own players that once played for him.
Make no mistake Nation - this was a heavy blow. Heavy indeed. Losing Kiffin could hurt this organization tremendously - it could hurt the young stars Kiffin brought in. We lost what could have been a great coach when its all said and done.
I have to retire my fanhood until further notice. I’ll be a fan from a distance. I hope Cable performs well because I have no faith in Davis after what he has perpetrated. I’ll be a fan of the past and hope they change for the future. I will not root in futility.
If you can’t see beyond Davis’ bullsht then you truly are lost. This whole drama is eerily similar to Mike Shanahan’s firing. What would seriously hurt is if Denver hired Kiffin as OC.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Warren speaks the truth and you guys hate on him? Rich Gannon said the same thing in different words. Nobody loves the Raiders more than me, but I’m sick of their pathetic dysfunction. Virtually everyone who’s worked for the Raiders says the same thing: Al Davis is the problem. But don’t believe them - just look at the won/lost record over the past twenty years. Mediocre at best. Or, keep shooting the messengers and drinking the kool-aid.

Becareful Ottocrat! Make sure that our tender to the touch offensive tackles can hold a block for more than a nanosecond and also make sure that our receivers get separation that allows those deep balls to be successfull.
So far the only player to get separation over the top was Z. Miller. Haven’t seen J.Walker or R.Curry do sh*t that gives me confidence that the greatest show on turf can be recreated here by fiat.

Question??
What makes you people believe that Kiffin was such a good coach? Honestly, what did he ever do that makes him such a good coach. The players played hard for him??? The head coach better get the players to play hard for him. That’s implicit in a head coach’s job. The fact is no one here could actually come up with any specific reasons as to why Kiffin is a good head coach. If anything, head coaches need to be good game managers and Kiffin proved over and over that he was not. This will not turn into another Shanahan or Gruden situation.

Chosed……WTF? If I was Chosed I would have a serious problem.
How about hosed by greasy al?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Now that this Kiffin / Davis drama is over (except for the money), I’m dropping the Nation Collective tag - I suspect however, that I will be adding it back at some point in the next year or so
I’m equally pissed at Kiffin as I am with Davis - those rumors of him going to Arkansas were true and were reported all over the place - that one part I do believe from Davis, and we know Jerry Jones (Arkansas Alum and huge booster) and Al are buddies and he was the one that called Al. Those rumors were going on 8 games into the season. That is total B.S. - Kiffin took this job for the sole purpose of getting his next job and there’s no way he didn’t get input from Gruden on what it would be like and I highly doubted that Al lied to him and told Kiffin he would have “Total Control” over all decisions - Kiffin lied to everyone he brought on board - no way a first year coach should ditch his team halfway through the season, I don’t care if he showed up to work everyday and busted his tail and got some good things accomplished - no other coach ever publically lambasts his own team, GM, or owner in the media - I fault Davis for a lot of it and I agreed with Kiffin 99% of the time and appreciated the job he did but every other coach we’ve had has kept that in house and more importantly hasn’t lobbied for other jobs 8 weeks into the regular season.
Kiffin was a self-serving traitor before he signed that contract, IMO - I’m sure he’ll be a great coach when he finds the job he wants and all that, but this could have been avoided if Al just fired him after the season and paid him his money - in fact, as soon as he tried to get that Arkansas job, he should have been fired for cause - that should be in the contract - you can’t job hunt 8 weeks into the season.
Al needs to bring in some people to help him out and give his coaches a chance, but I don’t think that will be a problem anymore - Turner had a bad team and couldn’t motivate a jihadi to blow something up, Shell was a disaster and we still had no talent, but now that our salary cap is cleared up from our superbowl run, we’ve had a couple decent drafts and acquired some more FA’s, our rebuild is essentially complete as long as the next coach preserves our Zone Blocking scheme - we need one more tackle and a NT (although sands is starting to play well), a #1 WR, and some depth to be playoff caliber - that’s two offseasons of work depending on how guys play this year. That means our next coach will only play one season before this rebuild is totally complete, and that should mean that he will succeed in his first couple of years AND get a contact extension (first since Shell regime 1 probably). If cable can keep Knapp around or find a good West Coast OC, our offense should be humming for years to come. If Ryan has seen the light and plans to blitz out of man coverage like he has for the last couple of weeks, then I may actually support him and that will give us quite a bit of continuity.
The point is, we now have the talent to compete and win, which will placate Davis and remove a lot of the pressure he places on his head coaches - we didn’t hear about any of this during the last two Gruden years, but it started off so rough that the relationship was doomed - the next head coach has a chance to look like a genious by winning a lot of games so the relationship should work out better. Cable is a raider lifer, understands Davis, and actually appreciates this job - if he can win for us this year, he should get a two year deal as HC, and if he’s successful after that, I doubt Davis wants to go through this again, or at least he’ll think twice.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:27 pm

951 - LOL - I was wondering who Matt was and then I put two and two together with the WR - That would be a disaster Al and Millen running the raiders I don’t know how you draft a WR who runs a 4.7 40 in the top 10 though - he couldn’t pick a decent head coach to save his life, but judging from the way he held onto that Detroit job despite stinking it up for 7 years, I’m pretty sure he would be cool kissing Al’s b#tt.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Its funny how when a ex player gives his view about his experience in Oakland they all say for the most part it was a nightmare, and peolpe get upset about it and then wanna drag their names through mud. Look,, if player after player after player comes to the same conclusion about the way things went in Oakland then just maybe there’s some truth to it. I bet some of you Kiffin Haters were the same people who were hoping last year that Rob Ryan would become our head coach. Now you guys have a ton of high hopes for our new “temp for hire” thinking we’re gonna go on a magical playoff run, but I doubt any of you would bet any money on that. I damn sure wouldnt!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Al davis should have never fired al kiffin. He said it himself the offense’s plays were called by kiffin and last time i checked that was the only reason we were still in games. The defense blew leads by playing prevent and allowing teams to rip them apart. Its rob ryans fault we keep losing bring a blitz every once and awhile.Kiffin was moving in the right direction the defense wasnt. Also al davis went out and spent money on players you can tell kiffin didn’t want.(D.Hall & J.Walker) Al should sign the team over to his son and his son should give a coach with a good football mind a full shot at succeding by allowing the coach to pick his players and assitants.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:43 pm

He needed a few tries to land the right one bot lucked into Calvin Johnson at the end. Al should have packaged up Kiffin and Fargas and swapped him for Millen and Johnson.

I cant believe an owner like Al Davis can get away with crap that he is pulling with Lane Kiffen and not paying him. It shows that Al Davis lost reality with the times and somebody needs to take the team away from him. A coach that wants to be the head coach of the Raiders should have head looked at. I’m not a Raider fan and I feel sorry for the Raider nation and they should not be put thru the crap that they are going thru.

Jerry who cares what all these castoff and loser ex-raiders have to say? we gave gannon a chance, he did the best he could - damn good at times, but choked @ the big dance. Phuck Shanarat. Warren Sapp? He was pancaked more than anyone. Lookit Sapp the frikkin turtle, on Dance for the Stars now, oh hell. Wtf you talking about Warren? the man gave you a chance and you blast him for it. I don’t see you handing back the money you made in Oakland though, fatmouth.
I don’t always agree with AD but I don’t need to read this shhhhhhhiiit.

Jedi,
I agree with you. The bottom line is Kiffin took this job as a stepping stone, and he was going after the Arkansas job. He claimed he had no communication with the crypt keeper: perpetuating the myth that Al is closed off and seceretive like a mob boss.
I sided with Lane because i beleived the perception he was creating. After it is all said and done, Lane has not proven anything. Lane has not accomplished anything, he has proven to be self serving and untrustworthy. He dodged the trey wingo question on communication with Al after al made him look like a snake.
Lane was asking for players to build up his roster on the back end, and Al produced: lelie, james martin, and ben troupe all of which were upgrades to the offensive side of the ball.
Lane distanced himself from the defense after the mnf loss: showing his lack of integrity, leadership, and judgement.
I liked the kid, but he is the one that lost out along with the fans. Cable will have his shot if not a line will beout the door to get that job. Al is still the owner, and the players signed on to play for the raiders for big money. time to close the door and move on.

I expect D Hall to show up and play as well as he is capable. When he signed Al Davis didn’t know that Kiffin was going to continue in his insubordanance to the point that he would have to be fired.
Hall is making a lot of money. More that he would have been likely to get elsewhere. His personal pride should push him to be as good as he can possible be, and if he doesn’t like it here he can ask for a trade and then raise the level of his game to the point that he is worth decent compensation as a trade piece.

Winning will cure all of the locker room problems. If they start winning we will hear all kinds of stories about how the locker room has come together and how much the players enjoy playing together. If they keep loosing we will hear stories about a disfunctional locker room.
