Gannon, Shanahan chime in

We can assume Rich Gannon won’t be brought back to the organization any time soon in any capacity. A transcript of an interview with Gannon on Sirius Satellite Radio:
Q: Your immediate reaction when you heard the news about Lane Kiffin being fired?”
Gannon: I wasn’t surprised at all. We had done the Raiders and Chiefs in week 2 and I got a chance to talk to Lane privately. I know how difficult it has been and how he was struggling with the whole situation. From a guy that has been in the organization, that’s been around it, I know just how difficult a place it can be to work. And they have problems, there’s no question. It’s an organization that is going through a very difficult period. It’s an organization, in my opinion, that is dysfunctional. They have a lot of issues. This is not something that I haven’t discussed publicly and privately before with the owner. I’ve talked to Mr. Davis at great length about our philosophical difference of opinion. I believe that you need to have discipline, structure, a system in place, organization. He is a guy that is not a big believer in having too many rules and that’s one of the reasons why that team, in my opinion, hasn’t had any real leadership and hasn’t had any real direction.”
Q: Do you think it makes it hard for a coach to come in there because of the fact that Al has a pretty good knowledge of football and wants to offer suggestions quite a bit of the time?
Gannon: “I always said it’s not a tough place to work, it’s an impossible place to work. I left there on a high note. I went to four straight Pro Bowls, was league MVP. I don’t have any bad feelings about the place. I just know how difficult it was for me and I just look at the people that have left. Mike Shanahan leaves and wins two Super Bowls. Jon Gruden leaves and wins a Super Bowl. Norv Turner is having success in San Diego. To let people like that leave, particularly a guy like Jon Gruden who really worked and really threw every ounce of energy he had into the place. To let him leave the way he did was just a mistake. And what happened is, in my opinion - people say, ‘Why have they had the big fall-off since the Super Bowl and stuff?’ – I think that it’s about six people who have left the organization that really were the heart and soul of the whole group and really kept it going. Guys like Jon Gruden, Bruce Allen, the general manager, Bill Callahan, who was our offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. You lost quality people and some players and they’ve never been able to recover.
Q: What about Tom Cable?
Gannon: This guy, Tom Cable, the poor guy, does that he think he is more equipped and better prepared than his predecessors? In other words, if Gruden couldn’t make it there and Bill Callahan couldn’t make it there and then if Norv Turner couldn’t make it there and then Art Shell couldn’t make it there and then Lane Kiffin couldn’t make it there, why does he think, all of a sudden, he’s going to make it there? I don’t understand.
Meanwhile, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan trotted out a line at his press conference he’s probably been saving for weeks. Davis reiterated his claim Tuesday that the Broncos two Super Bowl wins were tainted because they were found guilty of salary cap violations.
“I’ll be honest with you, I was a little disappointed. When you take a look at it, I was there 582 days. Lane Kiffin was there 616 days. So what it really means is that (Raiders owner) Al Davis liked Lane more than he liked me. I really don’t think it’s fair. I won three more games and he got 34 more days of work. It just doesn’t seem right.”

There is a mole in the Raiders organization. He goes by the name “WDR”, or “Willis Da Raider”. He provides insider info to the website raiderfans.net in their paid premium section.
I hope Al can find the rat and fire him!
I suspect it is Herrera, the guy who runs raiderfans.net has a press pass as a photographer, and gets heat to not rip on Al… that Herrera is a shady cat. He probably is the one that leaked it to Mortenson also.

If the person posting as “BK” is right, now I know why I was banned from RF.net, and so many others as well. Also remember that BK is the name of the administrator of RF.net.
I also remember a guy there named Willis who used to have a lot of inside info. They usually put his stuff in the premium section.
I don’t doubt it. That site was great for a long time. You were allowed to rip Al freely. Then suddenly they put the clamps on. Started a rule where Al was off limits. It’s been one of the worst Raider forums ever since. Lots of cool people there, great fans. But the forum there sucks now.

Al has nobody in mind for a GM. He just said that per his lawyer’s advice to seem open minded, because no doubt Al’s meddling is going to be an action of his named in Kiffin’s lawsuit. Al’s going to hire some goofball GM in-name-only so he can testify that if he were the power monger Kiffin is accusing him of being, he never would have hired Joe Blow GM.

Gannon is absolutely right when it comes to running an modern football organization in this day and age and any business for that matter. I’m taking advanced business managment courses for my masters currently and in my current studies about organizational structure in the this modern age to run a succesful business….Rich Gannon hit on ALL POINTS!

Gannon makes some legitimate points but his conclusion that it’s ‘impossible’ to succeed here isn’t one of them. If anyone should know that it is possible to succeed here, it’s Gannon. I think Madden is a lot closer to the truth when he says that when you have an owner who wants to win as badly as Al Davis does AND is willing to spend the money, the barriers aren’t as formidable as people might think.

The majority of Raider fans want Davis gone now, and that’s not going to change in his lifetime. He’s a disliked, untrusted, and overall, a character who’s impossible to respect or admire, anymore; not only in the sporting world, but amongst the fans of the Raiders, as well. Deal with it.

one of my least favorite and favorite plays at the same time during the Gannon era was his overthrow in the 4th Qt. that was a guaranteed first down and even possible touchdown because the tight end was so wide open. Hey, I am just wondering what the conensous of the blog is. Everybody is trippin on each other and driving daggers in each other back. I though this was the Raider Nation.

If you were searching for a person to lead your team to success and you were conducting interviews and Al Davis sat down to interview. All you would have to do is ask him…What is your record over the last 5 years and why do you think you can lead my team to success? Al Davis would say 20-64 and before he could answer the rest, I would ask him to leave.

I’ll provide some commentary:
- Says there’s no way Kiffin is as much of a liar as Al is making him out to be.
- Says Al’s tirade yesterday did nothing to help the franchise.
- Al got the exact guy he hired. There were no surprised. Nobody would take that job, Kawakimi says.
- “everyone runs out of Oakland screaming, LAne decided to be chippy about it. …it may not be a classy move by Kiffin, but he’s made himself an independent force in all of this”
- Al’s tirade not “moving forward”. It was delving in the past.
- Wilbon now asking him about Herrera. Wilbon messed up Herrera’s name, alluding to how much of a nobody Herrera is.
- Kawakami says that Al’s tirade yesterday out did the video of him and Herrera.
- “Herrera is only there because he’s a fanatic”.
- “the people left in Oakland are fanatics, and they have to please Al if they want to stay”
- Kawakami standing by his claim that Herrera passed out those articles. Said he saw him do it, physically.

Using the word preposterous is not an argument.
I see you left out the Fargas part, that’s OK, it’s easier to leave out things that are difficult to prove.
I believe your quote was that Josh McCown was a bad personnel move by Kiffin. Josh McCown came out and executed the offense that Kiffin designed better than Culpepper or Walter, and much better than Russell would have last year. You are leaning hard on those 4th quarter QB rating stats. That stat is pretty meaningless when you throw three times in the whole 2nd half, and have lost two games in the 4th quarter. Russell looks like an exceptional athlete, he might be great someday, but right now he is struggling and McCown gave us a better chance to win last year.
The rest of your argument is that Kiffin hasn’t acknowledge what a good D-lineman Sands is. That’s kind of a different story than your previous statement that “Kiffin called Sands a bust.” I am not even sure what your trying to get at when your talking points shift slightly with every response.
I am glad that Kiffin is gone at this point, because it was clear he wouldn’t be here next season, so what’s the point. But you can’t say that we ever really got the full scope of Kiffin’s talent, when Al admits to shooting down Kiff’s very first attempt at a personnel move.

I love the talent that Al Davis assembles in Silver and Black year in and year out. Al Davis is a brilliant man, always was and always will be. A true Pioneer of the greatest sport in the world. It’s easy for clowns who are want-to-be-athletes, who never took a chance in their life, to sit at home and second guess and criticize.
When you do leave Al, there will be a big hole in not only the Raiders organization, but also in the NFL. I’ve been a Raider fan for 40 years because of your will to win, it is unmatched by any professional sports owner.
Al Davis, you don’t have to answer to anyone. When it comes to SUCCESS the Raider organization is up at the top.
The Raiders are gonna win again…..sooner than most people think.
