Will coaches want Raider money up-front?

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, October 4th, 2008 at 2:35 pm in Oakland Raiders.

One of the more interesting questions in Friday’s on-line chat came from Sacraider, who wondered if future head coaches would start asking for signing bonuses as a way of “staving off the fear of getting fired and not getting their contracts honored?”

Have to admit I’d never thought of it before, but it makes perfect sense.

Davis doesn’t want to pay Kiffin, he was accused of shorting Mike Shanahan $250,000 and also lost a judgment to former defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan over pay.

(It’s probably worth the $250,000 to Shanahan for all the mileage he’s gotten out of it).

The Raiders would likely laugh off a bonus request, but let’s face it, the public execution of Lane Kiffin to go along with firing him for “cause” and not paying his contract is bound to make any coach think twice.

You wonder if Tom Cable was sitting in a quiet back room waiting his turn Tuesday after the intermission, or if he was watching the whole thing unfold on ESPNNews and wondering what he had just gotten himself in to.

Some quick hits on a bye week Saturday as the post-Kiffin era comes into focus:

– Haven’t actually heard the sound byte in which Davis supposedly is asking for information on Cable before introduciung him at the press conference. Doesn’t matter much, anyway. It was the right call. Cable is the best available replacement on the current staff.

Greg Knapp is better served working with JaMarcus Russell and there’s reason to believe he wouldn’t have wanted the job anyway. Bringing in an outsider such as Jim Fassel or a semi-outsider such as advance scout Paul Hackett would do nothing to promote chemistry.

(Davis reiterated he doesn’t believe in chemistry. He sees it as something teams claim to have when they win).

James Lofton’s asension would have carried with it the sense of the inevitable, as he was hired by Davis with Kiffin being informed by a third party.

Most everyone is going to be on board with Cable, and if you’ve spent five minutes talking to him, it’s clear why.

– My favorite Cable comment came from colleague Carl Steward, who sent me an e-mail regarding the press conference spectacle and closed with the line, “Love the idea of John Goodman as coach.”

– Get used to the Raiders being a pinata until they turn things around on the field.

You take Rich Gannon’s criticisms to heart because it sincerely pains him to see the Raiders in their current state.

Disregard most of what Warren Sapp says, because he’s a master storyteller, and storytelling is often accompanied by embellisment. Sapp’s criticisms of the 1970s offense come primarily from the Tom Walsh season, and that was the exception rather than the rule.

The one Sapp comment worth worrying about was his contention that the Raiders had worked with a defensive adjustment to put an eighth player in the box consistently to deal with their deficiencies against the run, only to have Rob Ryan say Davis shot it down late in the week.

– For the Raiders offense to change, here’s where JaMarcus Russell needs to make his biggest improvement _ the Raiders are completing an NFL-low 12.9 percent of their third-down passes for first downs. The next opponent, New Orleans, with Drew Brees, is completing 47.2 percent, trailing only Dallas (51.3) and the New York Giants (48.0).

– Even with the 37-to-23 pass-run ratio against San Diego, the Raiders are running the ball more frequently than all but three teams in the NFL. They’ve run on 54.4 percent of their plays, trailing only Baltimore (59.1 percent) and Tennessee (57.4).

– Neglected to mention it in previous blogs, but Tyvon Branch is now without his cast and could be available for kickoff return duty, although Johnnie Lee Higgins has fared very well in that area.

– Kiffin said early during his tenure that there would be no players on scholarship, and that didn’t set well with Davis, either.

“I can’t let a guy go. I admit this,” Davis said Tuesday, singling out Zack Crockett as a reluctant cut he made at Kiffin’s behest.

This will be the kind of pressure Cable will be up against should he make it into a second year, and he would be best advised to make his case rather than simply insist on a specific course of business.

– Great story from a former Raiders assistant. Davis would make requests of things he would want to see from Jon Gruden. Rather than put the requests directly in the circular file, Gruden would have the video staff make a cut-up showing why he didn’t think it would work.

Davis would often be appeased, at least knowing his request was being considered.

Cable might want to borrow from that strategy.

– Curious to see how this hole “cause” firing scenario will play out, because some of the things Davis wrote about in the letter seemed soft. Kiffin was critical of Javon Walker, but I never heard him say he didn’t want to sign him. He never said that I can recall that he didn’t want DeAngelo Hall, and he never directly said he didn’t agree with the signing of Tommy Kelly.

– Kiffin’s penchant for calling out players in public will not likely be repeated by Cable. If Cable didn’t the message his interview, Davis delivered it at the press conference.

“I’ve told him, we don’ thave to make an example of players publicly, we have to make those players want to be great,” Davis said. “And they will be great. But we can’t bring ‘em down publicly. And that’s the important thing, he has to dominate that locker room.”

That’s a Davis staple _ when a player isn’t great, it’s usually the fault of the coach, not the player.

32 head coaching jobs at the highest level of football, one of which is with the Raiders. Say what you want, that matters.

Fact is, Knapp, Rathman, and Cable all could have gone somewhere else, easily, but they came here. A lot of credit for that has to go to Kiffin, but if it were truly that toxic to work here, they would not have come.

There is a lot of talent to work with on both sides of the ball. Hard to believe a confident coach couldn’t believe he’d get it done. Win, and things are always easier. Not easy, just easier.

  11. Oakglenn Says:

The contracts ARE guaranteed. To get paid you don’t have to win, Just don’t do anything stupid. Kiffin did a lot of stupid things. They will probably settle out of court for some “undisclosed” amount.

Sorry to Repost but I think this is an interesting point to ponder:

Kiffin wanted to get fired because he knew there was no way he could wrestle control of the organization from Al, which is the only way any coach can win here.
    __________________________________________________________

I was talking to some football people and they thought Kiffin was purposefully trying to get fired. Think about that for a second. That is absolutely mind blowingly TERRIBLE. That is unbelievably bad for him, the team, the league, the organization, and professional sports. That is an absolutely incredible thing!! Kiffin was trying to lose for his own personal financial benefit.

Let’s say for the sake of argument, he wasn’t trying to lose on purpose. Then, he is completely utterly incompetent. So, either he is despicable, or incompetent. It has to be either A or B. And MR wants to give him a raise, and control of the team.

  13. lefty12 Says:

    Oak-you got your desire-Kiffins been fired(although it was in a chickensh!t manner).let it go-move on.

  14. lefty12 Says:

so Oak,who is this local person being considered to come in and help the old feeble one run the organization?

  15. heavymtl Says:

Oakglenn - you seriously think Al will settle out of court? If this were any other team and any other situation, that would be a likely outcome - but come on, we all know there’s a greater chance of Al paying off Shanahan AND issuing a public apology to Marcus (on the same day as a solar eclipse no less) then there is of Al settling ANYTHING out of court.

  16. Oakglenn Says:

lefty12, actually I was on record numerous times here saying I didn’t want Kiff out. But after that presser, everything all of a sudden made complete sense: the Rob Ryan debacle, the way he used Jamarcus, the Arkansas debacle, the 75 yard FG attempt, etc. When all of this came to light, good effing riddance!!

As to who is going to come in to help Davis, everyone here thinks it’s going to be Mariucci. I don’t think that. And I know you guys are going to hate me for saying this, and again, this is not MY choice, but I think it will be Mike Nolan.

It will be either as DC, or front office.

  31. lefty12 Says:

that might not be a bad idea.he seems to be pretty easy going(surfer dude) and might be able to cope with all the bs that is the Raiders.plus,he has no love for the dischargers.he would also bring some much needed credibility to the org.

  33. Darron Says:

But first lets see if Cable can get the job done.If he gets us 7 to 9 games you have to got to bring him back.

  34. King and Crenshaw Says:

Whether or not a coach is paid up front or not at all is not the problem for the Raiders. The smart coach will try his darndest to get control of personnel from Davis. The reality is that until the Raider scouting department (which is comprised of Al Davis and a nondescript flunkie) stop going after the flashy track stars and start going after disciplined football players, no coach in his right mind will want any part of Oakland. Although we do have very gifted athletes on the roster, consistency, discipline and heart are what wins in this league. How many of those guys do we really have right now? Only time will tell.

  35. lefty12 Says:

Darron-we are talking about a front office person, not a coach.

  36. Oakglenn Says:

They are not going to bring in a guy in the middle of the year. Fellas the NFL is the quintessential old boys network. Guys have grown up together, coached and played in college together. Shoot remember Madden and John Williams grew up on the same street! It’s not unusual for guys to meet up during pre game warm ups and shoot the sh**. It’s there, that someone may say, hey, if something happens consider coming over to our team. Nothing is in writing or verifiable. Davis wouldn’t draft a letter or make phone calls or do something that would easily be verified.

Any court battle will be open to the public.

The question of the day: What dirt could Kiffin have to make Al Davis look bad?

He doesn’t have to be 100% truthful, Kiffin could make stuff up. People will remember the bad points and the stories that Al cannot deny will be the ones that will stick. I see a quiet agreement coming Kiffin’s way.

Al showed his hand too soon, but he made his point. That is probably more important to Al Davis today. It could hurt him if it goes to a 3rd party to decide. It will severely limit his choices as Kiffin’s replacement.

The story goes that he had to pull a “Your are a Raider Art, you owe it to the team” card to get a coach 2 seasons ago. Then he had to get a passing game coach (not even a full OC) from the college ranks as a replacement.

Where could you possibly find your new coach? I mean, what is the next step down? High School PE teacher/football coach?

It’s going to be interesting (as in an F-inf joke) around Raiderland for a while.

Does he think that by over paying players will become hungry? I don’t get it. But then again I don’t think about this time for weeks, and months and a year and time…

  46. Oakglenn Says:

Lefty you’re right. Did that sound right? Any way, when Kiff wanted Monte here, Davis would have had to approach the Glazers and buy out Monte Kiffins contract and then probably pay the Glazers something. If he had approached Monte directly that would have been tampering. Davis clearly was not willing to do that. Saying something to someone on a football field, while it technically is tampering, is something that goes on constantly. Jerry wrote an article on exactly that a few months ago.

Regardless of how the Kiffin thing plays out and I do think that he should get paid, Kiffin should include Big Al on his Christmas card list for the rest of his days for speeding up his career by about 5 to 8 years. What was the guy before this past year? Just some co offensive coordinator? Now, he’s a former NFL head coach and he’s not even 35-years-old. Even if Kiffin was outright Machiavellian and was daring Davis to fire him, there’s no way he’s going to have his dismissel held against him after that poorly advised press conference. One thing is to announce you’re getting rid of a guy, another is to lawyering your case for not paying him in front of the media. Especially when you’ve got a history of doing stuff like that. Kiffin’s going to land on his feet. Talk about getting the jump on everyone else his age or at his coaching career before last year.

    _____________________________________________________

Great question. The offensive linemen are the leaders of your team. Normally. If they aren’t they should be. John Madden also came from an offensive line background. John used to say when he got in a sad or bad mood he would just go hang out with the Olinemen. He said he just felt better hanging out with those big ugly guys. Don’t kid yourself, the leaders of those recent excellent New England Patriot teams isn’t Tom Brady. Everyone thinks it’s Brady. It’s their Olinemen. Those are the leaders of that team over there. The good news Ken, is obviously Cable has the attention of the leaders of his team. What Cables job is right now, is to convince the rest of the Raider team how he’s gonna make all those guys not only better players, but better men. They’ve seen what he’s done with his unit, so he has some pretty solid cred.

  79. Oakglenn Says:

I can understand it from a player perspective to some extent but i could never understand from a non-player standpoint. Coaches should be paid based on performance. They dont have to worry about injuries.

    – For the Raiders offense to change, here’s where JaMarcus Russell needs to make his biggest improvement _ the Raiders are completing an NFL-low 12.9 percent of their third-down passes for first downs.

Yep. Brett Favre says 3rd downs are where NFL QBs earn their money. Of course, play calling has an influence on success as well.

  96. Blackholepriest Says:

This is one of the few blogs by Jerry that I agree with appro. 98% of what was written. Everyone I talked to in the HQ strongly agreed with Cable selection.

He is what they called “the man for the job”. Mora Jr. asked what took so long? He’s a guy trying desparately to prove he belongs, but a football coach who has been prepared for the position and is finally getting his opportunity to execute what he’s been prepared to do. Big difference. I saw Nnamdi on Jim Rome and was pleasently surprise by his optimism and receptiveness to Cable. He seems eager to play for him. This IMO is HUGE because others will see that in Nnamdi and respond to it.

It’s starting to look like Big Al REALLY lucked out
that this guy was on staff to chose from. Even Jerry sees it as a step from Kiffin even though he doesn’t make it obvious.

Mr Davis may have never given this guy a chance had he not had the opportunity to see him up close and personal. Thanks Kiffin! sometimes you may walk in the wrong door, but find just what you’re looking for when you get in the room. It seems that Mr Davis has stumbled upon just what he was looking for right under his nose in amongst his own mess.

Sometimes the girl we need is one standing there while looking about for someone that excites the eyes ie; skin deep beauty with no substance.

When Sapp said the defense they were working was scrapped that was probably early in Rob-O’s time here when Mr Davis was not as confident in Ryan’s decision making. I would be shocked if it were in the last 3 or 4 years if it happened at all.

Mr Davis’ tendency to hold onto great players a few years too long is one of my pet peeves with him over the years. Sometimes he just wont let go. Tim Brown was here too long so was Mike Haynes and several others. But if he gets someone young who has that same
ability he will move on replacing them sooner. But that rarely happens right away.

Jerry is exactly right about the approach you musttake with him in terms of showing as to the moves you want to make and not try to make a public spectical of it, you simply have to reason with him and not just do things without showing reasonable cause. He’s nt stupid and he wants to win. Once you gain his confidence as Ryan has moves are much easier to make.

Kiffin simply never attempted to do this, he didn’t care what Al thought he just did it, well the results are probably not exactly what he expected, then again maybe they are.

Good riddance!! now we have a guy that appears to be what we should’ve gotten from the beginning, we took the circuitous route but hopefully we’ve arrived at the desired destination after all.

  97. CopenhagenFan Says:

    Let’s mention something positive:

The following players are doing a good job, better than expected:

    1) Turdell Sands

    2) G. Warren

    3) K. Edwards

    4) Mario Henderson

    5) Johnnie Lee Higgins

  98. CopenhagenFan Says:

Every new coach we get (after Al boots the last one) will seemingly lead us back to glory. Cable seems o.k., I like Cable…..I just don’t think he’s better than any of the other guys who FAILED because of the “dysfunction” that permiates our franchise.

  99. Blackholepriest Says:

Correction; Kiffin was a guy desparate trying to prove he belonged (thus the constant passing the buck, and wild accusations), but Cable is a guy who has been prepared for the job and hopefully that preparation has met opportunity. He seems to have prepared for THIS opportunity. He has always been a Raider at heart now he is HRIC (Head Raider in charge).

  100. Blackholepriest Says:

Copenhagen, most everyone I talked to suggested the team needed this guy, I think we lucked out.

Simply because this is his dream job and the preparation is key. It just might work. We’ll see.

  101. CopenhagenFan Says:

Kiffin was the guy who Al Davis picked to lead us to glory, just like all of the others.

BHP you make it sound like it’s some calculated plan by Al Davis, that Cable was being groomed for this job?

To Kiffin’s credit, he did more than any of the other coaches since Gruden.

  102. CopenhagenFan Says:

BHP..I’ll give you this. Hiring Cable as our O-Line coach was the best thing we’ve done in years. He has done an amazing job as line coach!

And when he talks, he SOUNDS like a real football coach. Let’s hope he can get it done!

  103. Blackholepriest Says:

Everyone calls what Davis does dysfunctional. And to them it is. But it’s just another way of doing things. I’ve never looked at it any other way because I grew up watching it.

Every say’s the way KC and SD do it is the right way, well what’s it gotten them? They haven’t won a thing in two generations. Just I say the right way is what wins………………period.

  104. CopenhagenFan Says:

And I agree that Cable is the right move for the Raiders right now because he carries on our scheme and is more qualified than the others on the current coaching staff.

I just hope that he can massage Al Davis enough to keep his job and keep the focus on winning games.

  105. Blackholepriest Says:

I’m tired, and not delivering my thoughts well.

The right way, is whatever wins………going to bed, adios.

  106. CopenhagenFan Says:

BHP..in the old days, we had 3 coaches that could deal with Al and bought into the way he wanted things done.

Madden and Flores, and then Art Shell (almost).

After the West Coast offense began to take over the league, with the 49′er, Dallas, Green Bay and Denver all winning a lot of super bowls, the Raiders failed to change their game. Each coach wanted to change things, but never had the green light to do it and we never could match the drafting and signing of new players with the implementation of the schemes. This is why we have lost over the last many years, with a little hole of light during Gruden’s time. Gruden could actually deal with Al….until the end.

  107. Blackholepriest Says:

Copenhagen, you took as that way, I was saying just the opposite. Davis never knew Cable prior to his coming here. So how could it be calculated?

Mr Davis got lucky, I said as much in my earlier post.

  108. CopenhagenFan Says:

we need some luck for once.

  109. Blackholepriest Says:

Copenhagen, first of all Dallas has never run the WCO. And further more Davis went the WCO in the eighties which is a little known fact. When he brought in Mike White to help Art Shell.

He hired Mike Shananhan specifically to run the very same offense we’re presently running right now. But fired him prematurely IMO. I thought it was a mistake then and I still do.

  110. Blackholepriest Says:

As a matter a fact I talked to Mike White prior to Art Shell getting fired and told him that I hoped he would take over and run the offense he ran at Cal Berkeley some years earlier.

  111. CopenhagenFan Says:

You’re right, Dallas actually ran kind of a Old San Diego offense…..they just had the best offensive line in the NFL, Aikman, Emmett and Irvin so it worked ha ha

Sid Gillman offense embraced by Norv Turner and Ernie Zampese

  112. Blackholepriest Says:

Correction it was in the early nineties when Mike White was hired to help change the offense. When Shell was fired he was hired to fully implement his offense.

  113. CopenhagenFan Says:

How cool would it be if we could protect the QB?

  114. CopenhagenFan Says:

By the way, I add Robert Gallery to the list of players that are coming through!

Bush and McFadden are also coming through and delivering the goods. Too bad McFadden is hurt.

  115. CopenhagenFan Says:

OK let’s face it….we’ve been DOMINATING on defense in the first half of games. We’ve been crushing the opposition and shutting EVERYTHING down.

What are the reasons for the tanking in the 4th?

Lack of success by the offense?

    Conservative defensive playcalling?

    Players out of shape?

    Losing attitude?

  116. Blackholepriest Says:

It’s up to Cable and Knapp to get it done. Russell has inlimited potential, but it has to be utilized in a well thought out scheme to take advantage of what he does well right now. Then as he gets better you open things up to fully implement the playbook and this can happen faster than what we saw from Kiffin.

The coaches we have are pros, proven guy’s that have experience gameplanning and calling plays and they work well together. If only Kiffin had taken more advantage of their experience.

Well enough of that, onward and upward…right.

  117. Blackholepriest Says:

Tanking in the 4th IMO was due to the offense leaving the defense out on the field too long, by not sustaining drives. The playcalling in the 4th has been horrendous. AS a result the defense goes into a protect mode instead of continuing to attack in order to try and protect the lead. That has never worked in this league to a great degree. Only on teams that run the ball consistently well played dominant defense in the second half. Something we couldn’t do and Kiffin knew this, yet he would constantly try to do it. IMO to try and expose Ryan as inept. When his offense never showed anything worth shouting about.

He needed to do everything possible to help take pressure off the defense. Stay on the attack, even Daunte Culpepper said he felt theyn never attacked anybody. Yet Kiffin would always caste blame at the defense as a smoke screen. The entire TEAM was at fault. When is the last time we scored in the 30’s on OFFENSE with no help from the defense. Not since Gannon was here.

  118. CopenhagenFan Says:

If we could get our offense going, we can unleash our D, and put the heat on without thinking we’ll lose the game with one defensive error.

  119. Blackholepriest Says:

Cope, I’ve been saying that for two years. They both need each other to be successful on a consistent basis.

I’m delirious right now. going to bed.

    Adios.

  120. CopenhagenFan Says:

The last 2 years, we’ve been trying to minimize the self destruction rutine on offense. We can see that minimizing turnovers and penalties has made us more competitive. But we can’t close it out and win consistently…..we’re going to have to turn it up.

Our 2006-2008 drafts have improved. What killed this team was from 2002 to 2005 only 27% (nine of 33) of those picks are with the Raiders today. Several of those nine are not starting.

Personally, I think he should be paid. It doesn’t encourage other coaches to come and work for the Raiders when coaches are fired and don’t get paid. Kiffin was a good coach but too immature to figure out how to work with Al. You can see from Jerry’s article that Gruden figured out how to handle Al really well.

New Orleans is rated twentieth on stopping the run and 29th on pass defense. We can win this game. It’s time to take the chains off Russell. He’s been coddled enough. Let’s see what he’s got-we already know he’s got a great arm. When we came out passsing in the San Diego game it worked. Rack me Jerry.

  180. SmartGuy Says:

That ‘Chins in a Hong Kong phone book’ line was/is a Joan Rivers joke, by the way. Circa 1985 or so.

  181. Dakota Says:

Chaos, congrats on the Dodgers…they still won’t win the Ws….GO TB Rays!

  182. Chaos Says:

I won 5K on the sweep.

  183. Chaos Says:

    Got great odds.

  184. Mistabrown Says:

  185. Dakota Says:

The Dodgers are actually my second favorite baseball team…but I know they don’t have the pitching to go all the way.

  186. Mildog Says:

To try to put things in perspective, I have always been a supporter of Al Davis. I have defended him against what I believed were scurrilous accusations. But with more and more criticism coming forth from ex-Raider organization personnel (willing to identify themselves)I am convinced that Al Davis has lost his edge. He needs to hire the right people under him to run the program. Get a good man to hold the “General Manager” position. Reorganize the personnel department. Improve the college scouting department and the pro football souting department.
I have been to 2 Raider Super Bowl vistories. But that is in the past. I want to feel good about our prospects not just our past. The last 6 years have put a tarnish on those trophies. We have to establish a good foundation and go from there.

  187. Chaos Says:

Hey i have read on a few occasions that people search for all of the news and notes on the Raiders. Thought I would share this for those of youwho did not know. I have used for 4-5 years now.

Mr Davis is blessed to have some of the most gullible and braindead fans in the NFL.

    LMAO

  189. Oakglenn Says:

Does Fernando still play for the Dodgers?

  190. SmartGuy Says:

Just giving credit where it’s due, lest somebody come away thinking it was a Mistabrown original. Surely you wouldn’t want that, would you?

  191. Oakglenn Says:

    Fernandomania! Go Blue!

  192. Chaos Says:

    Yeah he pitches next week.

  193. jhill Says:

come on home dakota … the cubbies will always be, well th cubbies.

now the Azul on the other hand? just think about when Kemp, Loney, Eithier, Martin, Kershaw, and Billingsley actually know what they are doing. they’re all sooo young.

  194. Chaos Says:

I would love to have a 45 minute sit down with Warren Sapp.

Just for today my two favorite football teams are Miami and Tampa Bay.

That makes it all the more fitting.

  197. SmartGuy Says:

Acutally, I should have said ‘a no more infield’ original. My mistake. Carry on….

  198. Oakglenn Says:

Mr. Davis’s only true genius anymore is keeping his band of retard loyalists as consumers. 30,000 or so boneheads shelling out their kids’ college funds for the game tickets and apparel of a team that loses year after year. There’s your “mystique”.

No he’s going to be the rader’s ne GM.

  200. Oakglenn Says:

Miami’s already looking like a Parcells team. You can see it. They’re just playing tougher football. Wish the Raiders had someone in the front office that knew what they were doing.

  201. Dakota Says:

    Al sucks.

  202. Oakglenn Says:

    Al’s mystery GM:

  210. Oakglenn Says:

MistaBrown, LT is one of the best running backs in the league. Every now and then I just say crazy things to make it look like the Raiders aren’t that bad. But we all know they are.

  211. Oakglenn Says:

Actually, I take that back. His true genius lies in the antagonizing of people like MR.

  212. Oakglenn Says:

I’ll tell you what’s leaking oil; The chance of the Raiders ever having a winning team again.

    My point exactly.

  214. Raiderkoolaid Says:

Warren Sapp said the phone rang and someone told him that it meant they where going deep on the next play. He didn’t say if they actually did go deep on the next play. Warran Sapp likes to hear himself talk.
