Davis continues to get pounded
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, October 5th, 2008 at 5:29 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The unfortunate byproduct of Al Davis’ over-the-top press conference hammering of Lane Kiffin is he has managed to make his former coach a sympathetic figure.
Going public, calling him a liar and the overhead projector hocus pocus has eclipsed the culpability Kiffin had in losing his own job.
Today’s round house punches, courtesy of ESPN’s Sunday Countdown:
Mike Ditka: I don’t think anybody wants to go there, you are not going to get a good coach. In six years, he’s (Al Davis) had five head coaches he has fired. Three of them are head coaches in the National Football League and they are doing very well. So, it tells you it is not always about the coaches. Here’s the thing. This whole thing came down to money. It is irresponsible that he’d do what he’s doing this young man. This is very, very unfair. I hate to say it.
When I was fired by the Bears, I had a year left on my contract. Immediately, the commissioner of football Pete Rozelle stepped in and said you will pay that final year on my contract. That’s what he did. Did he have to do that? I don’t think he had to do that. But it is the right thing to do. This kid didn’t bring on what happened. Al Davis brought it on. This is wrong gang.
Exactly what planet has Ditka been residing on? The whole “cause” issue is worth debating and will probably wind up costing Davis a lot more in terms of his legacy than the money he is attempting to deny Kiffin.
But if Kiffin hadn’t spent the last eight months poking, prodding and jabbing Davis, Tuesday would have never happened. Even if Kiffin were fired, it would have been a conventional dismissal, rather than displaying the head of young Lance on a stick in public square.
Keyshawn Johnson: A good coach can succeed anywhere if he has the opportunity and the time to put his program in place. When you look at Al Davis and you look at the situation in Oakland, he’s impatient. You look at Jon Gruden – Jon Gruden had an opportunity to put that program in place. A year after his departure, they go on to the Super Bowl. They play us in the Super Bowl, but then (Bill) Callahan is fired. And ever since then, this team has gone straight down. So you have to have time to put it in place. Al Davis wants to have success instantly, and you can’t in the National Football League.
Pretty valid criticisms, although it’s hard to hold back your laughter when hearing Johnson actually defend Jon Gruden after the very public thrashings he’s given his former coach over the years.
Tom Jackson: More than about time, I think it is about a kind of paranoia. It gets worse as the time goes on. He said – he said, it doesn’t matter. I said at the beginning of this, this is about not wanting to pay Lane Kiffin. Al Davis has had success in this league doing that – not paying head coaches, getting angry with guys and not completing contracts with them. I think that’s the problem. The catch-22 here, all this talent on this football team, the only guys who are going to come in and coach this team are guys who are young and desperate to get a job, and the guys who are being recycled for the second and third time who’ll do anything because they haven’t had success. How are you going to get a guy like, and I use his name again, how are you going to get a guy like (former Steelers coach) Bill Cowher? Even if it was $10 million a year, he’s not going to take a step toward the Oakland Raiders.
Jackson’s feelings toward the Raiders were formed through bitter AFL and AFC West battles as a member of the Broncos. You know that going in, so it’s really not a big deal.
Cris Carter: In watching this, it was sad to watch. It was sad to watch someone who had impact on the National Football League, like Al Davis, in a positive sense. He’s done some great things with that franchise through the years. But Lane Kiffin didn’t know one thing. He did not know, when he took that job, that Al Davis was going to be on his coaching staff. Al Davis is an old football coach. Old football coaches are always the same, just like old boxers, they won’t quit. They always want to coach. No one told Lane – ‘Hey Lane, when you take over Oakland, Al Davis is on your staff.
Of course somebody told Lane Al Davis was on his staff. He just chose not to listen.
Chris Berman: Al is a Hall-of-Famer, always will be. It just was not a hall of fame week or hall of fame scenario.
How many times has Chris Berman been the voice of reason?
Goodell keeps his distance
Sounds as if commissioner Roger Goodell has no intention of stepping in and saving the poor Raiders from themselves.
Goodell said in Houston that he hadn’t yet heard from Kiffin’s agent, Gary Uberstine, regarding a grievance.
“It’s a reality of our business,” Goodell said. “I’ve moved on now. If I’m involved in some fashion, or asked to be involved or required to be involved, I will certainly fulfill my responsibility. But I don’t think (there’s) anything else to say other than it’s an unfortunate situation.”
Jay Glazer of FoxSports reported Kiffin is being urged to consider a defamation of character lawsuit.
AFC West landscape
So much for the theory of LaDainian Tomlinson getting well against the Raiders. He gained 35 yards on 12 carries in a 17-10 loss to Miami. The Chargers are 2-3, and with the Broncos now having their annual bellyflop in Arrowhead Stadium out of the way, it’s tough to envision anything other than a Denver runaway.
The Broncos outslugged Tampa Bay 16-13 in Denver.
As for the Raiders, their New Orleans, New York Jets, Baltimore, Atlanta, Carolina and Miami stretch looks a lot more daunting now than it did when the schedule first came out.
The Saints have a hot passer who has scorched the Raiders before in Drew Brees, the Jets have Raider-killer Brett Favre, Baltimore is a difficult defensive foe on the road, Atlanta rookie quarterback Matt Ryan has outplayed JaMarcus Russell in terms of the bottom line, Carolina is atop the NFC South and the Dolphins have beaten New England and San Diego in successive weeks.

Another long year, Raiders can not even get a break on their schedule.
I know there are some Jerry Porter haters out there, but he would have been better to keep instead of Javon “missing in action” Walker.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Prediction is easy.
Raiders will end 4-12, Al Davis will fire Cable.
Right?
One would think a miracle happening. Al Davis fires Cable, but hires a real GM and the GM hires a coach, and the coach hires his assistants, and raiders become relevant again.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
I was a big Kiffin supporter but I’m getting annoyed w/the media blast against Al. Lane lied & Al is a control freak.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Does ESPN still have a pregame show on sunday mornings?…hmmm, didnt know that.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Sorry JT,..Al will not hire a gm.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Al will never hire a GM,..and the Chargers will never win a superbowl,..two things you can count on.

Al will draft a punter, then he will draft another rb.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
whats with you white people anyway,…white people are just lame.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Davis has finally made the Raider’s the laughing stock of the league. The news confrence was embarasing. Al came across as a bitter, cheap, senile old coot. His syle of justice doesn’t play anymore in the modern NFL. As the saying goes,”It’s better to be thought of as an idiot than open your mouth and confirm it”. The Raider’s next coach is Lofton or a retread. I’m betting on Lofton since Davis will make some statement how he brought him on as coach since he didn’t want to lose him to somebody else.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
per the organisation the team needs are,
1. punter
2. rb
3. place kicker
4. cb

Mike Didka doesn’t know what he is talking about. He has got his facts wrong. Gruden did not get fired. He was let out of his contract a year early in exchange for draft picks because he would have left anyway at the end of the year. Gruden is of course a head coach in the NFL. Of the four coaches that were fired, only Turner is a head coach in the NFL, and how successful he is is arguable. He took over a 14-2 team and went 11-5 last year and is now 2-3 with it. Art Shell is not a NFL head coach. Bill Callehan is an assistant at the NY Jets, and Kiffin is not a NFl head coach, so his facts are completely wrong, as is his statement that Kiffin did not bring this upon himself.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
That was Ditka of course.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
An insider by the name of WDR posting on http://www.raiderfans.net in the premium forum provided information last year that Al Davis and Lane Kiffin had come to an agreement Lane Kiffin was leaving the Raiders to take the Arkansas Head Coaching job. This was important information about an agreement between the two parties that had not been released to the public. A draft was made up to void Lane Kiffins contract so he could resign as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in order to take the Arkansas head coaching position. WDR posted Lane Kiffin was extremely angry when Bobby Patrino was offered the job after he (lane Kiffin) had agreed to take the position. This was the exact draft leaked to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. This subject was made clear in the Raiders news conference by Mr. Al Davis. It was revealed to Mr. Al Davis by numerous sources that Lane Kiffin continued to actively pursue college head coaching positions while being employed by the Raiders organization. It was at this time the relationship between Lane Kiffin and Al Davis soured. It is no secret that Lane Kiffin was intending to pursue a college head coaching position at the end of this season. It is believed by many inside and outside of the Raiders organization including some members of the media that Lane Kiffin was trying to get fired, collect his money, then go off and get his college HC job
October 5th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
was gone all day.when i left Mia let the dischargers 17-10.the final score was 17-10.why didn’t their def. get so tired they gave up 25 pts in the 4th qtr?

jmac your a tool
October 5th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
R8erkrazy, I don’t know how anybody taking an objective look an the situation could conclude any differently. Kiffin wanted to have his cake and eat it too. He wanted to get paid by the Raiders and actively look for a college job at the same time.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
ESPN has a directive from there producers to bash Al Davis.
They are just like politicians. They go with the poll winds. If they think the majority of the people are for Lane, then they will be for Lane.
ESPN is the worst sports news you can get. They are as biased as FOX News is for Republicans and CNN is for Democrats.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
It’s not “your” #60 you idiot. It’s “you’re”.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Al Davis is a guy whom I admire and Always will, period!Lets hope Coach Cable has this team ready with a can of whup ass for years to come!!!!Raiders!!!!!!!!!!!!ps,what up,chaos?

Great writing Jerry. And thanks for leaving warren sapps punk ass out of the mix.

Hey Willie. Whats going on. Watchin a little smash mouth with this Pittsburg and Jacksonville game. Nice to see 2 of the 4 lose today in the west. We win next week, we have a better chance to control a little more of the destiny!
October 5th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Jerry,
I can’t believe this. I think your rebuttal of Ditka is an acknowlegement that Lane got what he deserved…..finally Jerry…

there are two JT’s what the hell I am now JT52
October 5th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Al Davis should make Javon Walker the Head Coach. He’s doing nothing as an active member of the team. Then Al would have a head coach making about $14 million a year.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Jerry, when I looked at who we had coming up, I gulped. We could be 2-8 after that stretch. And we could lose to the Falcons. We have to play well in the next two games to keep from going in the tank with another 10 loss season.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
I cannot wait for the Faders to come to Denver for another beat down! Do any of you actually have a job?
October 5th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Wow I’m 74th….you guys are like little school girlz. If this Jerry McDonald guy doesn’t have Al’s back, does that mean he’ll be fired too? I have bad news for this columnist, Jerry Garcia and/or Country Joe McDonald could write better stories than this guy and they’re both dead. Well, I think Country Joe is, if not his flashbacks would make better news than this guy.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
You faders may go 3-113 if you get lucky. Learn from us as we held a lead in the 4th quarter.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Lefty I can answer that. That is because both teams offense got more than Zero first downs in the 2nd half.

Miguel, make that 2-12, the faders were counting on a win against Miami who showed that they are a team headed in the RIGHT direction today.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
that will match 10 more seasons of dis-charger fans beleiving they will finally win a super bowl.
yeah super bowl talent. right, you beleived your own hype.

October 5th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Might as well go Surfin’ Discharger fans!! Your team sucks ASS!!! 8-8 is now a real possibility for their Super Bowl asperations.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
What happened to the Twerp?? You HAVE to be a twerp to come in here mouthing off when your team is 2-3 and should be 1-4.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Al, you don’t need a Segway when you’ve got the best walker going, Star.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Jerry,
Nice article on an off day. I think I must be drinking the Kool Aid because I see this team as a 6-10 team with the defense and JRUSS showing signifigant improvements going into 2009. One more decent draft (which may be a stretch based on the recent past) and the Raiders may be a playoff team in ‘09.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Until the *ss kisser Rob Ryan is fired, we will continue to lose games.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Do I resemble an ape?
October 5th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Looks like Parcells has passed up the Raiders in a year’s time. This squad needs to go out and get the rest of the league to respect it.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Lane Kiffin is a selfish snot nosed little punk. Why didn’t his other coaches walk out with him? Because he doesn’t understand that this is a business. How many hardcore fans who pony up the cash week in and week out complain to their bosses while making 2 million a year? Getting paid to do something most would only dream of doing. You do the best with what you have and move on. Who in their right mind will turn over their empire to some young punk who doesn’t know what hard work is all about? Bill Gates? Steve Job? Al Davis?
October 5th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Wow,..good baseball game tonight. I think Im an ape.

October 5th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Im the coach next year,….my kid is already on staff as assistant/waterboy type situation,…and Im a hellavu yes-man,..Im perfect for the job,..I will make my kid D coodinator. 0-16 in 09. God bless us.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Oakglenn,.sounds like Jerry is ready to make a comeback.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
I wouldnt mind if Millen came here to be a “GM”,…not kidding…anyone but Al.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
So Jerry sounds like you’re blowing off what everyone is saying. Good for you homer. Sounds like you’re scared of Al. He probably has some clout where you work and you’re scared to lose your job too, by cause, and not get paid. TJ is exactly right. Al is about money and who he can screw out of it. Just like the $10 mil he stole from, was it Irwindale? Deadbeat Al. He is a deadbeat, nothing more, nothing less. A deadbeat. Enters into contracts and renegs on them. He’ll be dead by the time it’s settled anyway but he’ll always be known as a deadbeat.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I hope Bush and Brees get injured tomorrow night,..our only hope.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
we’re screwed……
October 5th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Oakland will crush the Aints.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Don’t worry Nation, Tom Cable aka Fred Flintstone will lead us to the promise land.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Howie and Rice agree because they were his players, not his coaches. If they were, and they disagreed with him, he’d try to cheat them too. Deadbeat Al. Cheat the coaches. I loved it when Villipiano said Al told him he’d take care of one of his coaches for him and then starting yelling at the coach in front of the players. Phil Vill was laughing about it like it was the right thing to do, undermine the coaching staff. That summed up deadbeat Al right there.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
The Superdome is the Mecca for SEC players,…Russell and DMAC will have breakout games,..its a big Raider blowout.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Jerry,
do your homework. Your analysis of Ditka’s comments is plain wrong. Poking and prodding is not cause. Cause is a legal term that has a high bar to prove — think fraud, criminal activity, gross negligence, etc… Incompetence is rarely cause.
Al Is absolutely in the wrong here — he’s basically telling Kiffin, I have more lawyers and more money than you. I know I am in the wrong, but will make you fight to get the money. Stop defending such behavior.
And I’ve been a Raiders fan for 20 years. I love your blog. But have been very disappointed with your coverage of Kiffin’s firing. Please stay objective.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
It’s funny to listen to all these former players like they know anything about what goes on in Oakland–They don’t.
It is easy and in some cases justified to be critical of Al, but Lane is by no means a sympathetic figure in the situation. If you are going to stand up to a owner like Al, and yes there are others like Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder do you really think the best way to do it is in the press? Do you really think that if you continue to disrespect the owner that some day you aren’t going to pay or in this case not get paid?
It is also funny how every year they talk about how so and so has a easy schedule or and tough one. In the NFL it doesn’t matter what you did the year before. Miami was arguably the worst team in the league last year and almost went 0-16. Having them on your schedule now doesn’t look quite as easy anymore. There are some games in there that are possible wins though. Baltimore doesn’t have an offense to save their lives, The Jets have Favre but not much else, and yes Atlanta is improved but no where near invincable.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Raiders are going to stick together and win in spite of Al,…Raider Nation not dead yet.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
If Russell doesnt take command this sunday,..not only take control during this turmoil,..become the unquestioned leader of this team,..and go out and dominate the game with huge numbers, then hes a bust,..hes a 60 million dollar bust,..he was paid huge dollars for this sunday,..to pull the Raiders out of Hell,…he has to do it this sunday or he will never be the man hes supposed to be.

Jerry, it’s unfortunate your only rebuttal to Tom Jackson’s and Keyshawn Johnson’s comments were ad hominem. You sound like one of these Davis loyals. Warren Sapp can tell you your house is on fire and you won’t believe him because he’s Warren Sapp. Poor dogs and cats…
October 5th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Hello…..Hello….Hello…..TWERP?
Has anyone seen Twerp. If you do, can you tell him to call home and tell his parents that there is serious doubt that his team will see the playoffs this year, and there is a very good chance they will not see a SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP in his LIFETIME.
I wouldn’t know how this feels because I am a RAIDER FAN (you can find my name on the wall of fame at the Oakland Coliseum) and it is too late for me to ever experience that feeling. Can you please describe to us RAIDER FANS what that feels like? It must suck!
Have a nice week,
October 5th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Actually blitzalot, Twerp is right over there……circling the drain.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Finzel,
A little surprised you’d stoop so low. You used to walk above the muck but now evidently you want to get your feet muddy. Well then, glad to meet your other face.
I spoil the fun in here for getting on people just for being optimistic?
I think you need to look up the definition of “optimistic”, moron. Because if you were really “optimistic”, nobody would be able to spoil it for you. You’d be optimistic, no matter what.
But, of course, you’re not optimistic.
You don’t believe a word of your own b.s. And, you used to sort of take pride in that. That was always your station in this warped little world…to just come up with positive things to say while subtly admitting yourself there was little to no hope.
But I guess you got exhausted.
So now rather than continue with your fanatical drivel about unknowns like Tom Cable pulling it together ( at least unknown to Al Davis, if you heard that candid audio of him on Tuesday..), you’re going to put on the same dunce hat as Oakglenn and BlackHolePreiest and blame me for the dark cloud in here…never mind the 20-64 record since getting smashed in the Super Bowl, a franchise in complete disarray, and us having not won 3 consecutive games IN SIX YEARS. It’s gotta be MR…
Finzel, I wish I had enough control over the things that make you guys sad and blue, to make you feel better. Believe me, Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen would probably still be here. They certainly wouldn’t leave for a want of money or control. Kiffin? Honestly? I think 5-15 is good for a head coach who had not one NFL caliber wide receiver on his roster. Rather or not “anyone is better than Kiffin”, my optimistic one, will remain to be seen, won’t it? But no matter the results, you’ll have someone to blame when things go bad, won’t you?
Blame everyone but Al. It just runs in the Raider family, from the mindless drones in the organization to the loyal fanatics in the blogs. Anyhow, I’ll let you guys get back to your fun now…

True Raider fans know how Al operates and it’s really no more huge surprises that would have us shell shocked, upset maybe, but not shell shocked. Al has his issues, he’s an old man stuck in his ways, but I don’t put anything on talk from former Raider players because for one, Warren Sapp has stated that he was having the time of his life as a Raider in interview after interview, but since Al fired and blasted Kiffen on national TV who Sapp has known since Kiffen was 18 years old you would expect some lip service from him of coarse. The other example is Randy Moss who stated one week that the Raiders were doing something special and 3 weeks later he’s hating where he plays, and starts missing catches on purpose pouting like a little girl. Warren could have retired, no one forced him to play here, and Randy Moss stole money by refusing to catch balls so simply stated, there are problems from both sides of the game, not just Al but punk players as well.

Once Again MaddenRaider, MR or MoRon as he likes to be called, posts the same sad drivel he has posted here for two years. No new insight, nothing worth reading, just the same old recycled crap.
Here’s the facts: Since 1990, the Raiders have played in the AFC Championship game (NFL’s version of the Final Four) 3 times and had a 4th trip ripped from us by a terrible call. The Phony Whiners and Pittsburgh have most, and we are right there in with the top tier franchises such as Dallas, NYG, GB in that time period. And that is arguably on the lowest ebb in franchise history.
We can probably all agree the coaching carousel around here has been a huge setback for this franchise. But again, even the most successful of the coaches Al has let go, Shanahan and Gruden, we’re feeling REAL HEAT last year. Shanahan has won nothing without John Elway, and Tampa Florida was ringed with barrels of Tar and Feathers if Gruden did not get to the postseason. He did, only to get completely rolled at home. Most of the others are complete failures, and Norv Turner now 2-3 this year after taking over a 14-2 team, in reality should be 1-4, if another loser, Lame Kiffin had actually tried to win the game.
October 5th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
MaddenRaider, but you did say I was right, so that’s answering my question, even though you used ignorant undertones. If you don’t like it, why don’t you find another team? No one is asking you to be a Raider fan, stop crying like a little punk.

Wow, Jerry, you’re really siding hardcore with Davis.
What makes you think Lane would have lasted if he’d kept his mouth shut? It didn’t help Turner, Callahan or Shell. Or even Gruden.
October 5th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
It’s not about Jerry siding for Davis, it’s about others talking when they have their own skeletons of treating people dirty, just because the punks are now sports Broadcasters people think they don’t have a past.
October 5th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Raiders Rain, you find an original comeback to Davis criticism and I’ll think about finding a new team.
Oakglenn, here’s the facts:
20-64 since Gruden cornholed your managing general hero.
1-3, coaching change mid season with a coach who Al Davis admitted he has no clue about.
The Raiders haven’t put up 3 consecutive wins in SIX YEARS.
When I get the time, we’ll go over some offensive and defensive stats since Gruden’s team fell apart. But for now, we’ll keep it simple.

If Reno were taking it, I swear to god I’d bet that the Raiders never again win 3 straight while Al’s alive. I’d parlay that with a bet that they’d never win more than 5 games in a season, either, while Al’s still alive. I never was a betting man but in this case I’d be willing to bet a 4 digit sum.

Kiffen did some crazy stuff this year! It was clear he was trying to get fired and get paid.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Jerry’s flip flopping on Al Davis is getting obvious. I’m sorry you can’t see it, Raiders Rain, but anyone who isn’t on 24/7 “Who’s bashing Al?” patrol can. Both Keyshawn Johnson and Tom Jackson just flat out nailed it and all Jerry could say is that they can’t be trusted because one is a Raider hater and the other got in a fight with a coach on the sideline once.
Here’s how we can tell when journalists start scaling back their criticism (and in this case, much warranted criticism) to get more access to a team, and perhaps out of fear of being fired due to a lack thereof; They start dumbing down their points of reference.
Basically, Raiders Rain, Jerry sounded just like you morons when making his half ass rebuttals to Johnson and Jackson’s comments.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
SirBlitzalot,
I only blame Kiffin for not breaking Al’s balls enough. I want a head coach who’s going to undermine that nut job and run his own system underneath his pinocchio sized schnoz. I’m only upset with Kiffin for not managing to do to Davis what Davis did to Wayne Valley.
October 5th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Damn, Jerry..are you on Al’s payroll to? I know you are on his jock, but stop acting like Lane was the problem. Poor old Al, all of these coaches over the last 5 years have really ruined the franchise. BS…as they pointed out, some of them are very successful right now. If you think that Lane was the sole problem with this situation, then you should stop writing. That is unless you are on his payroll…..very disappointed in the column. I thought you would call it for what it is. Until Al is gone, no one will coach here, except as ESPN pointed out, washed up or first time coaches who do not know any better. So get off Al’s jock long enough to write a real column.

DisCharger Facts:
Jack Murph is just another Raiders home game.
98.7% of DisCharger fans don’t know what L.T. stands for. All they know is that he likes to run (When not on the bench), and does something nice for other peoples kids.
A prerequisite of being a DisCharger Cheerleader is a tramp stamp and English as a 2nd language.
DisCharger Fans start nearly all the fights with Raider fans, then they cry about how mean the Nation is they get stomped by real thugs.
When DisChargers say the won the big one, they are referencing a Wild Card Playoff game, not the Superbowl.
October 6th, 2008 at 12:03 am
You;re not talking about thugs again are you Raider? Thugs are a way of life. I can now see what Al is trying to do here. He’s just trying to get this ship on the right track. The coaches he’s fired couldn’t coach their way out of a paper bag. If the Raiders win next Sunday, it will turn their season around, and everyone will be back to calling Al Davis the greatest person in NFL history, and they’d be right.

Jerry, you’re comments are pretty much on the money following the quotes. As for Tom Jackson, who can forget Tom’s comment to John Madden-”It’s all over fat man”.
Yes, New Orleans does have a hot passer. They’re also 20th on run defense and 29th on pass defense. If the Raiders take the wraps off Russell, if Fargas and McFadden are back, and if Warren, Burgess, Aso, etc. are back to strenght after the bye we can win that game.
You never know in the NFL. At the beginning of the year we thought we had an easy schedule.

Effects of Kiffin firing taking shape in Oakland
By Dan Parr
Oct. 6, 2008
Raiders owner Al Davis took aim and fired his parting shots at Lane Kiffin last week in a very detailed, no-holds-barred, venting session with the media. Davis did what he could to make the head coach he had just fired look as bad as possible.
He called Kiffin “a flat-out liar” and a con man who, by the end of his tenure, was concerned more about getting paid than anything else. He also said Kiffin never had much faith in a team that never quit on him as he led it to a 1-3 record this season.
There’s plenty of blame to go around for the Raiders’ league-worst 20-64 record since 2003, and while Kiffin was there for 20 games of futility, Davis has been pushing buttons at the top of the organization for the duration of the slide. No one deserves a larger share of the blame than Davis, the way we hear it, and, because of the intrusive owner, coaching the Raiders is the job no one wants to touch.
Raiders coach Tom Cable
Raiders coach Tom Cable
“Al Davis stole Lane Kiffin’s dignity,” a veteran executive told PFW. “That’s not what you do to a young head coach. No one wants to work for the guy. He’s an incessant meddler. It’s not about winning to him. It’s about Al. It’s always been about Al, and he’s not going to check his ego in at the door any time soon.
“As long as Al is Al, it does not matter who is coaching the team.”
The newest man not to matter is Tom Cable, whom Davis promoted from offensive line coach to interim head coach. Cable has 21 years of experience as a coach, including a brief stint as a head coach at the University of Idaho from 2001 through 2003.
Oakland is looking to move on with a new leader in place, but the still-developing consequences of Davis’ management of the Kiffin situation is hindering the team’s ability to make a clean break from the past.
Word is Kiffin and his agent, Gary Uberstine, will file a grievance with commissioner Roger Goodell to get back the unpaid salary remaining on his contract with the Raiders, reportedly a sum of $3.5 million. Davis said he was firing Kiffin for cause, meaning Kiffin would not receive further payments. In addition, reports indicate Kiffin is discussing the possibility of filing a separate multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit against Davis.
“No one ever likes to see a dispute like that happen,” Goodell told reporters during a stop in Houston on Sunday. “Mr. Davis made it very clear he didn’t like it. It was clear that Coach Kiffin was uncomfortable under the current circumstances.
“It’s something that’s unfortunate. You don’t want to see it happen.”
The commissioner said he did not intend to intervene in the matter unless he’s asked to.
“It’s a reality of our business,” Goodell said. “They’ve moved on now. If I’m involved in some fashion, or asked to be involved or required to be involved, I will certainly fulfill my responsibility. But I don’t think (there’s) anything else to say other than it’s an unfortunate situation.”
Goodell’s words could easily be applied to the situation facing Cable, who is challenged with the task of bringing order to the chaos. There are no head coaches in the league who are also responsible for coaching a position group, but that’s what Cable will attempt to do in Oakland as he continues on as the de facto O-line coach.
It should be helpful to maintain continuity in O-line management as the Raiders work to protect QB JaMarcus Russell, but Cable’s focus in that one area will likely limit his ability to coordinate a complete game plan. In a way, sources say, it’s as if the team is without a head coach, which should only create more confusion in an already chaotic environment.
Since he arrived in Oakland, Kiffin’s top priority had been to change the culture of the club. It was beaten down and consumed by a losing mentality when he took over. His challenge was to reverse that mode of thinking, and most accounts suggest he had the squad on the right track before his ouster.
If Davis, or anyone else, believes the Raiders’ biggest problems left with Kiffin, he’s woefully mistaken. The long-anticipated coaching change has only compounded issues for the team, and Kiffin has the option of adding to the distractions.
Davis mentioned in the press conference that he was considering a “local personnel executive” to bolster a front office that has been lacking any stability since Bruce Allen defected to Tampa Bay to join Jon Gruden in January 2004.
The way we hear it, San Francisco director of pro personnel Tom Gamble is believed to be the mystery candidate, with Davis intrigued by his local presence and NFL bloodlines (his father, Harry, was once president of the Eagles). With 49ers GM Scot McCloughan’s father, Kent, having been a lifelong Raiders evaluator, we hear Gamble would not be blocked from skipping across the bay if he so desired, although the move more likely could come following the season.
Former Lions GM Matt Millen has also been recently connected to his former Raiders boss. However, it’s unlikely that Davis would be willing to compensate Millen anywhere near the same salary range in which he had been paid during a failed Detroit tenure. Many potential candidates around the league maintain that they would not entertain the Raiders’ position under any circumstances.
“It would take five million (dollars) per year for me to consider that job,” one veteran NFL front-office executive said, “and I would want it guaranteed in writing, with funds held by the attorney general. You can’t count on getting paid there.”

I always enjoy to read this blog and most of the time I can agree with anything written. But this one is just wrong… I blame Al Davis for the last 6 years and I’m a fan of the Raiders, so a Raider-Hater can blame AD to because it’s so obvious. Al Davis WAS great and he did a lot for this team, but we don’t live in 1970 anymore, it’s 2008 Al wake up and hire a GM.
Warren Sapp bashed at AD on NFL Network and what he said made me really think about what happend to this team… the motto of AD is “Look like the boss of the world baby” and nothin else. His pressconference was one of the rare moments in life, in which I felt shamed myself for someone else, just ridiculous.
I hope AD’s son will be smart enough to hire a GM and get back t (at least trying) to win.

Again, “Word is…” Who’s word you Cur?
Tjhis isn’t news its rumor mongering. If Kiffin ever wants a job in prosports again, he’ll drop the whole thing and hope it fades away cuz you can bet Davis can “prove” enough of what he’s alleged that Kiffin wants no part of it.
Al called him a liar because HE LIED. TO YOU THE PRESS. Perhaps thats why instead of “reporting” you take the lazy road and bash ole Al.
Makes you guys look like suckers for getting duped by Kiffin.
Go back and review exactly what Kiffin said in his “refreshingly honest” statements.

#104 - Putting words in my mouth.
Sorry about the shot I gave you, though, that was ungentlemanly. No doubt, guilty for stooping low. I’ll forget it if you will, and I pledge not to do it again. I was trying to needle JMac to speculate who the mystery exec could be in print, and yes, it could be a will ‘o’ the wisp. And I was still a little charged up about getting rid of Kiffin, the most excited I’ve ever been about the Raiders firing a coach. But I’d like to deny a few.
I root for the Raiders. I naturally think things will get better. If that makes me a moron, I’ll live with it. All that math and science I took in school, and Sunday comes, and I go right to pieces. I’ve even applied Newton’s Laws to the Immaculate Reception - it hit Tatum. Guilty again.
I mentioned I agreed with you about Davis no longer being able to be an effective GM regarding football matters, right there in the offending post, so I’m very interested in who we might bring in. I also mentioned I’m not sold on Cable, but that I think he’ll be better than the last guy.
I should take the time to thank you for posting those articles commending Kiffin for slithering (one of the writers used that word), particularly that one from Ailene Voisin. That was when I realized that Kiffin had to go. Those really had me boiling mad at that weasel. My insticts KNEW he was generating this. Before then, I was still thinking he’d work out. If that was not what I was supposed to think, well, I go my own way a lot, having my own opinion and stuff.

October 6th, 2008 at 4:44 am
Man, I’m already thinking what I would do, if I were the GM (the season is already over for me):
- Trade 1st overall pick to a team, that needs Tebow. To the Lions (for Roy Williams), Cards (for Boldin) or Rams (for Holt) for example.
- Sign a WR, if there isn’t a good one available for the draftpick (isn’t Roy Williams hitting the market?)
- Get Nnamdi a loooooong contract (at least 5 years)
- Get rid of overpaid Players
- Hire a good coach (like Cowher) and let him choose a coaching staff
- Find some good o-lineman during the draft
- which results in -> winning record
I want Boldin, new OT’s, another DT and a GM!!!
Just get Davis 100 miles away from the Franchise baby!

Have you lost your mind.. Boldin is out, 2 weeks ago he was worth a 1st rounder, but now he is way under a 2nd rounder..
Roy Williams is on the outs in Detroit, 35 yds so far or something like that, they don’t want him there they labeled him as one of Millens kids.. in a trade he isn’t worth more than 3rd rounder..
As for Holt, the man is 47 years old.. his hands is still good, but we need to stretch the field, hardly a task Holt could handle.. he max worth a 4th round pick..
October 6th, 2008 at 5:08 am
LMN, Williams is way out of sync right now, I can’t believe he’s the same ballplayer. Watched the Lions yesterday. He’s their version of Curry. Some of it was on Orlovsky, but he was almost never in position, turning back late, breaking wrong, etc., and he don’t look happy.

I do think that Kiffen had alot of positives and I wish it worked out for stability sake. However, if half the things Mr Davis said were true Kiffen had to go.
We are building this team the right way.
Look at the Jets and Titans and their QB situations.(Short term gain, long term pain)
There is not a team in the league that would not love to have Jamarcus and Macfadden.
We focus on OT and Dline in the next draft and we will win. We will not challenge for a playoff spot this year. With a good 2009 draft and good development of Russell next year playoffs are possible.

—————————————————-
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I’m already talking about the offseason. Boldin is worth a 1st rounder, no doubt about it! Williams can be a very dangerous weapon combined with JaMarcus and he’s still young, I would give up a 1st rounder for him. Of course Holt isn’t worth a 1st rounder anymore, because he’s to old but would still be a good WR for a few years, so a 3rd rounder.
Anyway, we won’t trade our picks right now. First because we don’t know if we really get the 1st overall pick (god, I really hope we’ll have about 5 wins) and second: Davis is too busy bashing Kiffin and destroying the franchise he once built!

if this cat brien is really a black dude im embarrassed to be black. this is a football blog. there are alot of a-hole on this blog who spew anti-black or african american crap and its sickening so brien cut out that b.s and lets all focus on taking care of our families and learn to if not get along, then at least tolerate each other. on a football note here is hoping the raiders at least find a couple wins this year and the path to a brighter future cause we ARE the laughing stock of All sports franchises

Leftcoast, yes he is black, he called me vanilla last week. He likes to make things personal, he made fun of my mother last week and even when he found out that I just lost her he didn’t let up. Unfortuately you can’t control people in here. Race or family should not even be brought up unless it’s possitive.

All signs still point to Kiffin as the main problem in Oakland all along. His offense was bland and his play calling helped the team loose 11 games with the lead in the fourth quarter over the course of his tenure. Goodell dosen’t want to get involved which, is never a good sign for a coach to hear before he tries to get his money. This team that Kiffin said could not win dominated the Titans starters in the preseason and the Titans are 5-0 with Kerry Collins at quarterback. Norv Turner is slowly changing back into his old form of loosing and the Broncos got dominated by the Chiefs who got dominated by the Raiders. The west is primed for a power shift and the Raiders are the most talented team in the division. With Knapp (a real OC from the NFL) calling the plays and Cable putting some marine style leadership into the offense, New Orleans has its hands full next week. You can cry about Al Davis till your blue in the face, but Kiffin had to go.
October 6th, 2008 at 5:56 am
But I’m sure Al will call down to the field…that helps a coach a lot. Davis couldn’t stand Kiffin and thats why he didn’t give him the time to win. Anyone that knows anything about football knows that with what he had he needed time.

Oh and I watched the Bucs broncos game just to get a feel for what they were doing on offense and defense compared to the Raiders. For starters the defense that Monte(hand in the cookie jar) Kiffin runs uses only 30% over the cover two scheme, the rest is mana to man. I know that will ruffle the feathers of the Davis/Ryan defensive scheme haters but its the truth, even the announcers pointed it out. They rarely blitzed wanting the front four to apply the pressure while sometimes dropping a DT into coverage and rushing only with three. They used the prevent sometimes only rushing 3. Does any of this sound familiar? Sure it does because its a coppy cat league and most everyone runs the same stuff.

Kiffin said he had not talked to Davis since the season started soyour myth is blown up Raider0525 unless you are calling Kiffin a liar, God forbid.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:07 am
and I’m sure Gruden,Callahan,Turner,Shell, they lied too???? Wakeup, do you see any pattern here at all? Are all these caoches bad, or is there another common factor here??? I Know it’s early but maybe grab a cup of coffee and then reply back.

Swissraider..
I got that you were talking about offseason.. you said the season was over for you..(for me too)
But still, you must have lost your mind waste a 1st round on Williams!?.. Boldin is the real deal, but our 1st rounder is way more important than to waste it on a good receiver..
furthermore, I might be wrong, but I believe both are in their last year of their contract..
Boldin and a 2nd round pick for our 1st round pick, then I would consider it..

As I watched Gruden get beat by Shanahan again I thought it was like old times in the AFC west.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:14 am
oh that’s right I forgot to put Shanahan on that list, he was a terrible coach also…smell the coffee, it’s calling your name
October 6th, 2008 at 6:14 am
SLD..
gotta admire you, you eat it raw all of it LOL.. “the most talented team in the division”.. yeah right =) LOL
another thing, I find it amusing that you think we will win more games with kiffin gone, nothing will change, did you ever watch Atlanta play?? I find it amusing that you think we will be so much better now, over night just because Kiffin is gone.. I bet if Al said the sun revolved around the earth you would believe it..
October 6th, 2008 at 6:14 am
Mentioning Shell in the same breath as any of the other coaches causes me to think you are the one with the need for a cup of java Raider0525.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:16 am
I understand that not everyone can agree on everything that is said in here. But I find it so hard that there are people in here that think getting rid of Kiffin is going to turn this team around…WOW
October 6th, 2008 at 6:16 am
wow, he just proved my point again!!! Too easy
October 6th, 2008 at 6:17 am
Thats because there are not many people that care enough to comment in this blog.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:18 am
OK, LET ME SAY THIS TO YOU ONE MORE TIME AND YOU CAN PICK AT ALL YOU WANT….LOOK AT THE PATTERN, FORGET WHICH COACH YOU LIKE OR DON’T LIKE, I’M NOT GOING TO ARGUE PERSONALITIES WITH YOU FROM ONE GUY TO THE NEXT….BUT THE COMMON DENOMINATOR IS DAVIS
October 6th, 2008 at 6:19 am
Oh and I watched the Bucs broncos game just to get a feel for what two really good teams look like. Man! We’ve got a long way to go!
October 6th, 2008 at 6:20 am
yes a very long way so lets fire Cable and see if that will help now
October 6th, 2008 at 6:20 am
Davis isn’t going anywhere and if you want a coach that works against the owner find another team to root for because it won’t happen for very long in Oakland or most any other NFL franchise.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:21 am
Cable will do better than Kiffin because he is a better coach than Kiffin.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:22 am
As I watched Gruden get beat by Shanahan again I thought it was like old times in the AFC west. Cable doesn’t have a prayer at Mile High.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:23 am
182…lol, no scit he’s not going away, that’s the problem…lol, that’s why no matter who is coaching we wont be anything…walk outside and see if anything hits you on the head, maybe that will help you see the light of day…lol wow
October 6th, 2008 at 6:24 am
There we agree on something, so who do you think should coach the Raiders and please don’t say Al because he already does…lol
October 6th, 2008 at 6:25 am
LOL now your posting as my name troll, post 184 is obviously not me, time to change names today. I am out as sith for the day, any posts past this one and #184 is a troll. Troll alert for the rest of you. Bye bye.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:25 am
SLD..
what if the owner works against the team.. do you think Al has done a good job lately, by lately I mean the last 8-9 years..? Gruden made us a SB team IN SPITE of how Al was working against the team..
What was the last good thing Al did for our team? janikowski? shell v.2 or change coaches more often than he has his diaper changed.. every time we get one step ahead, Al pulls us 3 steps back.. yeah what do you do when the owner doesn’t care about the team anymore??
October 6th, 2008 at 6:25 am
I think that’s about the 3rd time you cut and pasted that statement and added to it…come on be orignal
October 6th, 2008 at 6:26 am
I am disgusted with the sports media. For weeks and months they have slamming Al Davis for not speaking up. For not ending the situation with Kiffin and when finally he does, they slam him for being vindictive and a meddling liar that abused poor Lane. None of them bother with the facts that some on here have mentioned on here such as Kiffin jabbing Al with a stick in the media every time he got near a reporter, o, it’s ok because it was Al Davis. Not, Ok. He is still the owner and Kiffin’s boss.Nobody ever mention’s Kiffin pursuing college jobs midseason last year and turning into a petulant child when Arkansas hired Petrino. One doesn’t need much imagination to know this pissed Al off.If he had such a HUGE prob
