Cable stressing the positive (yardage)
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, October 6th, 2008 at 2:40 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick hits from Monday’s post-practice briefing with coach Tom Cable and locker room interviews:
– Cable was pleased to see Justin Fargas back on the field as much for the potential of positive yardage as his positive influence.
Cable sees Fargas as part of the equation when the Raiders are attempting to get first downs and work the clock with a lead.
“In this system, we use the term ‘Gain a blade. Gain a blade of grass.’ Everything’s positive. Typically we don’t have but maybe one, two, maybe three at the most negative runs in a game,” Cable said. “If you look at the last couple, we’ve been at three, four five. (Justin) will go in there and get something positive and make the chains move, somehow, some way. And he really is a terrific finisher. He runs so violent it’s a great change-up with him and Darren and now Michael, it’s a good mix with all of them. But he can definitely, definitely make something positive happen at the end of a game.”
– Fargas said he wasn’t quite 100 percent, but expects to face the Saints Sunday in New Orleans.
“I feel pretty good. I’m going to keep rehabbing it, keep treating it, and get ready to go,” Fargas said.
– Darren McFadden was being held out as a precaution, not because of any sort of setback, Cable said.
“We probably could have done a little with him out there today but we thought, ‘Hey, why not? Let’s just rest it, be smart about it, give him a couple more days off it with tomorrow off and then we’ll go for it Wednesday,’ ” Cable said.
– Cornerback DeAngelo Hall, the only Raiders player who attended the press conference last week during which Al Davis detailed his reasons for firing coach Lane Kiffin, said the switch in coaches is nothing like what went on in Atlanta last season when Bobby Petrino bolted for Arkansas after 13 games.
“When Petrino packed up and left . . . it was hard to put the pieces back together,” Hall said. I don’t think Tom Cable has to do a whole lot in terms of getting us to win games. It’s just a matter of finishing games and not getting into back-and-forths in the newspaper with the owner. I’m sure he can definitely do that.”
Hall said he was having some work done at his home on the player’s day off, was going to work out anyway, and that he had “heard there was something going on, so I’m going to come on down. And I came on down, and the circus was on.”
His reaction? Hall said he was stunned so much has gone on between the owner and the coach, adding, “Maybe I was naive about it.”
Not suprisingly, Hall is standing behind the man who authorized $24.5 million in bonus money on a new contract when he was acquired from the Falcons.
“I definitely think this is still a great franchise,” Hall said. “This is Al’s baby. He treats it like a kid. He wants the best for it. He wants the best the same way I do for my children and I’m sure you guys
do with yours. You can hear the way he talks about the Oakland Raiders. It’s a passion of his. That passion is his life. You have to protect it and cherish what is yours. That’s what he did.”
– Hall said he would have no problem recruiting free agents to come play in Oakland, but inadvertantly touched on one of the problems with a franchise in which the head coach is not viewed as the absolute authority figure with regard to the on-field operation.
“Obviously there’s going to be a whole lot of stuff this offseason with trying to figure out who is going to be the head coach and all that all over again,” Hall said. “From the top down, I like it. We answer to Al. Al knows us personally.
“It’s nice when you have that personal relationship with the owner as opposed to trying to kiss up to every head coach who comes in. That’s when you probably have a problem. When you can sit down and talk to the owner about any problem, it makes it a little easier.”
– It remains to be seen how it will all play out Sunday, but Cable sounds as if he wants legitimate balance. Kiffin never fully trusted his passing game, and would occasionally throw the ball in clusters _ he called for six passes in eight plays early against the Bills _ before reining it back in.
“I don’t want to go out there and have drives where we threw it three times and we’re out or we ran it three times and we’re out. I don’t want that anymore,” Cable said. “I want to see balance. I want to see us take our shots down the field, and I want to see us get the lead, then I want us to turn it over to that backfield.”
– Tight end John Madsen was surprised to find himself back in a Raiders uniform. One week after being inactive for the first time since early in his rookie season, he was inactive against the Chiefs.
He was informed of his relief while getting dressed following the Friday practice as the Raiders were getitng ready to depart for Buffalo.
“I thought it was the end of my Raider career, actually,” Madsen said. “It kind of came out of the blue.”
Madsen said he had a workout with Baltimore and had another scheduled for this weekend in Cleveland.
– Ben Troupe, the tight end signed when Madsen was cut, could practice Wednesday, Cable said. Troup has practiced one time since Sept. 19, injuring his foot halfway through his first practice.
The Raiders continued to take it easy with cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (elbow) safety Gibril Wilson (back), cornerback Stanford Routt (ankle) and are expecting all to go Wednesday.
– As good as second-year man Johnnie Lee Higgins has been, rookie Tyvon Branch will get some work returning kickoffs.
“That was the plan originally before the injury,” Cable said. “Johnnie’s done a terrific job but one thing that Branch is going to give us now, he’s going to give us some depth and he’s going to give us a chance to have two returners that we feel good about. He’s a super fast guy that will hit it and hit it quickly. So I think that’s a big bonus for us.”
Among kickoff return specialists with 15 or more returns, Higgins ranks six in the NFL with a 26.8 average and a long of 69 yards.
– Hall of Fame defensive end, Raider legend and Fox analyst Howie Long thinks Kiffin shouldn’t have been surprised regarding Davis’ level of involvement.
“I played there 13 years and 95% of the time Al Davis was a great owner,” Long said on Fox NFL Sunday. “It’s been 15 years since I’ve been part of the organization so I can’t speak to the day-to-day operations. But if you’re Lane Kiffin, you should know what you are getting into. He has access to a guy like Jon Gruden who coached there. Don’t be surprised when the owner who coached in the league and built three world championships gives input on a day-in-day-out basis on the goings on of the football team. Don’t be shocked by that.”

D. Hall:
“It’s nice when you have that personal relationship with the owner as opposed to trying to kiss up to every head coach who comes in. That’s when you probably have a problem. When you can sit down and talk to the owner about any problem, it makes it a little easier.”
___________________________________________
If D. Hall likes something it means that it is probably a BAD thing! Fuking tool. Oh yes, it is so nice being able to gripe to the owner when the mean coaches ask me to play within 15 yards of the WRs!
Man I can’t stand that guy.

STR,
He is doing great…had his first football game! He played WR, CB and S. One tackle. About like D. Hall I guess!
They have had power for about 2 and a half weeks now. They live near a school, so they were on a priority grid thankfully.

October 6th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
ya i guess that was all kobe’s fault right? u will lose by 40 if ur playing against great defense & ur defense is playing like the worst of all time
October 6th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
More excuses for Kobe. Have you ever seen MJ get blown by 40 when it was on the line? You laker fans kill me with all the excusing you guys do for Kobe. Hey how about up 24 in the 2nd half of game 4? Yeah sure a great leader never loses that game
October 6th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
So it sounds like Cable’s gameplan is similar to Lane’s, If we have a lead, try to milk the clock with runs, and then watch the lead slip away….let’s not try to move the ball and score more points. New caoch, same results, comin’ up!
October 6th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
i cant wait to c 3 headed monster back on field. if we had all 3 Running backs healthy for buffalo & san diego, our record would have been 3-1

Nobody here ever discusses the news Jerry is reporting on. Maybe that’s because Raider news gets more depressing by the minute?
What’s up, Brien. Where the hoes at?
October 6th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Who cares about Kobe? Dude as a busted hand and still lead his team to the finals. I am excited to see Bynum and Gasol throwing lobs to each other…high/low all night long baby!
First preseason game is Tuesday vs Jazz.
October 6th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
post 16……..regardless the teams should be sitting at 3-1. Kiffin’s offensive playcalling did suck

Nevermind the hoes right now MR………its funny I see YOU nowadays want to meet people for confrontations. Damn 408 must have gotten under your skin

Only thing Howie said that made sense:
“It’s been 15 years since I’ve been part of the organization so I can’t speak to the day-to-day operations.”

All of you people who post below Jerry’s articles every day are morons. Please stay away from other Raider related sites. Thanks.

yah right brien have jordan ever went against 3 superstars like pierce, garnett, allen in the finals , did the bulls ever played against a great defense like the celtics in the finals ?
October 6th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Kobe is a chump until he wins a title being the lead guy.
October 6th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
He did get under my skin, Brien. Bad day. I don’t know what to say. Saw him posting under my name and I flipped. I apologize for it. It’s beneath me. 408 would probably throw me through a wall.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Brien, All I’m saying is I’m tired of watching the Raiders try to protect a lead in the 4th Qtr instead of trying to extend a lead and / or make the lead insurmountable. SCORE MORE POINTS! Don’t leave the game in the hands of our defense or the officials.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Brien,
My money is on our offense getting worse. If Cable does Al’s bidding and starts trying to throw deep with those turnstile tackles and those cement footed WRs, watch out baby….sack, sack, sack and fumble, int int int fumble sack sack sack…
It could get ugly pretty quick.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
we suck, welcome back to the circus Madsen, I was a bit sad to see another under-utilized playmaker go AGAIN. Anyway, I hope the rumor that 408 posted about “the mystery man” who Al spoke of as a possible new member of the front office, is not Matt Millen, as was rumored in that article. However, it would’t surprize me at all. As of right now, we are in a tight competition with the Lions for the laughing stock of the league, it would be just like Al to hire someone who is giving him competition, (or fire him, depending on the circumstane). So, why not? Let’s make it official Al, let’s bring in Matt Millen and make us the sole laughing stock of the league! Where are all my Al supporters? Who’s with me?
October 6th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Brien, so are you saying Kiffin was fired for performance?
October 6th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
So it was great defense in that 24 point lead being blown at home?

October 6th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

October 6th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

October 6th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Howie is right about Kiff. Plus all that BS about lawsuits is so typicval. Remember how Clemons was going to sue his personal trainer? Kiff could sue for his $, and probably will lose, like Shanarat. However, he will not sue for slander or defamation, because he has no case.
Cable is the man. Agreed Deangelo’s comments aren’t great, but I have hard time believing he chooses to stay so far back on h.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Dakota its up to these damn players as well. Kiffin did some dumb shhhhhit but the players are ones out there. Gotta make winning plays
October 6th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Brien
you should just put (Moron) next to your name instead. It gives the same message, and it’s shorter.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
One of the fastest DBs in the league is playing soft coverage most of the time and he got a $25 million bonus to do so? Man I could cover those WRs just as good for only $1 million!
October 6th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Not answering the question is closer to spin. Answer my question or we’re putting the gloves on.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
MR………Kiffin was fired because he wanted to be
October 6th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Here’s what Howie’s right about, Dan:
“It’s been 15 years since I’ve been part of the organization so I can’t speak to the day-to-day operations.”
October 6th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
“His reaction? Hall said he was stunned so much has gone on between the owner and the coach, adding, “Maybe I was naive about it.”
Alot of media types are STILL being naive.
Jerry’s at least presenting other sides. He’s reporting, no speculating. Thats OUR job.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
MR you aren’t putting any gloves on…………use our bare knuckles
October 6th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Then why are you making a case against his performance? What coach could turn around our ‘06 disaster in a year and a half? Answer, or it’s me and you with the gloves on at the next game.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Voldemort lol……….I pity people like you
October 6th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
No gloves?
Eh.
Alright, I’m just kidding, man. Come on. Answer the question, though.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Now that the circus is over…lets see if we lay down or come up…3 out of the next 4 are winnable games (NO, NYJ, BAL, ATL), are we going to be 4-4 at the halfway point or 2-6?
The main thing that needs to happen this season over everything else is the development of the JaMarcus. He only has 5 starts under his belt, so he is the one that needs to develop.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Once they draft some OL studs from some SEC or PAC 10 schools we’ll be fine!
October 6th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
i dont think our offense will get worse remember cable always had high scoring offenses in college

Sunday’s Scoops: Will Kiffin sue Davis?
by Jay Glazer
Updated: October 5, 2008, 5:56 PM EST
Raiders owner Al Davis fired his head coach Lane Kiffin this week, confirming long-running rumors the coach would be out by the team’s bye week. While Kiffin is now gone, the story will continue.
Kiffin is filing a grievance against the Raiders for the remainder of his pay but it may or may not stop there.
FOX Sports has learned that some close to Kiffin are advising him about the possibility of filing a multi-million-dollar defamation lawsuit against Davis. The suit would be the result of the Tuesday attack in which Davis lobbed several well-placed accusations about Kiffin, calling him a liar and blasting him for what he basically deemed insubordination.
It’s just the latest in a long string of sad side stories that has mired the Raiders for years. But this week wasn’t just sad for fans of the black and silver but instead painted a sad, sad picture of two franchises in dire need of an emergency face lift.
Soap operas? To put it mildly and that’s just based on the things we’ve heard and read on the surface. Information from things behind the scenes makes both situations even more disappointing.
But which team seems to be in more disarray? Which one has sunk lower? The Raiders used to be a slam dunk but the Rams are now clearly catching up.
Take their firing of Scott Linehan. Sources say that the Rams ownership actually consulted a local PR firm to assist them in handling their decision of whether or not to fire the coach. A local PR firm? After they came to their decision, ownership phoned Linehan at 1 a.m. waking him up from his sleep in order to fire him.
The executives said they felt they needed to end their relationship face-to-face … at 1 a.m.! When Linehan agreed and went to give them his address in order to meet, they asked if he could get in his car and drive the 30-minute trek to get fired at the hotel the owners were staying in.
The Rams, to put it mildly, are a mess. Word is that team executives Jay Zigmunt and John Shaw will both be out after the year. Personnel-wise their stars are up there in age and then there’s the huge question mark with ownership.
But are they worse than the Raiders? This week Oakland put on quite the show. Lane Kiffin is no longer the head coach of the Oakland Raiders but the soap opera that has culminated in his firing is sure to have lasting effects.
The low point of the entire affair was the Raiders attacking other reporters’ integrity as well as Davis revealing to the world that Kiffin did not want to draft JaMarcus Russell. Who cares? What did that possibly accomplish other than the to make Russell feel uncomfortable. Yes, Kiffin wanted to sign Jeff Garcia, then draft Calvin Johnson in the first round of last year’s draft, then Trent Edwards in the second. However, since that time Kiffin and Russell have become pretty tight. Those close to Russell say the young QB was very fond of his coach and felt the two had made tremendous progress.
Again, all it did was make Russell feel uncomfortable and had zero bearing on the end result. Coach didn’t want to draft a player but eventually made him the starter? Happens all the time.
This all happened on the tail end of a couple of weeks that saw each week question whether or not Kiffin would be gone before the bye. Then there was the situation where a Raiders executive got into a heated exchange with a reporter, all captured on camera.
Shame, shame, shame. Although if there is any way to make humor of either affair, how great would it be if Kiffin sued Davis, was awarded a huge settlement and then used some of the bounty to pay Mike Shanahan, John Fox, Bill Callahan, Norv Turner and all other coaches who’ve ever had a problem with Davis. Now, that would be classic!

Raiderbub- this isn’t the 9th grade English class as some on this blog try to make it. You’re cool but your post is dead on
October 6th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Brien, it’s just a question laying on the table for you. If Kiffin wasn’t fired for performance, why are you making a case against his performance? Who in this league could fix Al Davis’s ‘06 disaster in a year and a half? Who? Non boxing mother f’r.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Players play this game. Coach can only do so much. Execution is key. Kiffin is gone, thank god so let’s move on
October 6th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
laughing stock of the league ??? plzzz our record is better than 5 teams right now..
October 6th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Boxing? What’s the point in that. MMA or just plain old streetfighting will work for me
October 6th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Brien, how have we upgraded over Kiffin? Give some examples.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
No duh Howie.
Kiffin’s first clue should’ve been the wording ON THE CONTRACT HE SIGNED!!!
Davis mentioned it in “the Letter.”
“Further, your contract is quite clear that you work “subject to the direction and supervision of the General Partner’’ and that the General Partner has the “exclusive right to do all things, ”
Heeeellooo.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
MR I wont answer such idiotic questions like that. Think about what you are asking my friend. The first question is as ridiculous just as the person who is asking it
October 6th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Either boxing or dominos, Brien. Take your pick.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Media will alwayz make us look bad no matter how many games we win
October 6th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I know you won’t answer, Brien. I’m only asking you for everyone else to see you duck the questions, thus killing your credibility.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I don’t box buddy. Rules are involved and you use gloves unless we are going John Sullivan
October 6th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Yeh Raiders 408, it’s the media making our 1 win look bad…
October 6th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
credibility on a blog? lol ok MR you are really tripping now
October 6th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
dakota good to hear your boy is ok now.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
only a moron asks why anyone makes a case against someone’s performance in the NFL
October 6th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
MR, you must have forgotten the meds today
October 6th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
The last time we did win, Raiders4o8, the media treated us just fine. Only the local press was killing us with accusations of copying the Bill Walsh offense. But it was weak because if they can’t win with their own offense, then they’ve got no room calling out someone else for winning with it. Besides, Chucky ran the ball way too much to be compared to Walsh. Those accusations of us copying the whiners only got to Al Davis, evidently, because he’s the only one who wanted Gruden gone.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Al didn’t want Gruden gone. The problem is Al punking Gruden in front of his dad after the afc title game

October 6th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Brien, so, you don’t have one single example as to how Cable is an upgrade over Kiffin? That’s what everyone reading this sees, Brien. And, yes, there is such thing as credibility on a blog. That’s why you’re here, shilling for Al. You’re trying to make the Raiders look good. Poorly, at that.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Al offered Gruden a contract that would have paid him about the same as TB
October 6th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Brien, you’re f’n stupid. I’m out of here. Later.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Al offered Gruden a chance to continue being sheeet on…I can’t understand why he wanted out!
October 6th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
FOX sports? Seriously?
Ugh…
“FOX Sports has learned that some close to Kiffin are advising”
“Some” close to Kiffin and they’ve learned. Bull****. Uncomfirmed rumor mongering. More like a media wish list. They’d love nothing more than for this to drag on. Its much easier to print the smae story over and over again.
1. Say someting vaguely clever or cute about how “Al Davis is at it again” or “Just when you thought it couldn’t get crazier / worse / wackier ect.”
2. Quote unnamed “sources” and then state your unfounded biased rumor mongering opinion.
3. Mention the 5 yr win loss record.
4. Proclaim ever lasting doom.
Yawn…
October 6th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Everyone sees whatever they want to see. It is up for their own interpretation. The upgrade is Cable not calling the plays like Kiffin did. Another upgrade is a coach not throwing other people under the bus and not taking responsibility. Leaders dont make excuses
October 6th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
LOL @ post 79!

October 6th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
81. Makes a couple points.
fact is, we lost those games due to conservative play calling on offense (Kiffin’s calls apparently) and piss poor substitutions at critical junctures. (Again, Kiffin’s call. Wasn’t he supposed to be really good at that by the way?)
The whole deal with Kiff is sketchy.
F’ him.
He’s gone, moving on.
You can bet, this whole media fracass has Oakland right where Al wants them.
In that locker room, all they got is each other.. No ones gonna understand what its like to go thru Oakland, so you have a unique bond.

This from a REAL Raider, not fat a$$ Sapp.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

“It’s nice when you have that personal relationship with the owner as opposed to trying to kiss up to every head coach who comes in. That’s when you probably have a problem. When you can sit down and talk to the owner about any problem, it makes it a little easier.”

Whoever thinks that Al davis is the one that has D hall playing 10 yards off wr’s, is an idiot. Davis’ favorite coverage is bump & run.
It’s D. Hall choosing the play off and the coaches not checking him on it. If Al was talking to him about that he would tell him to tighten up his coverage and play no less than 5 yards off.

Memo to Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis: Jim Fassel would be a good fit
by Paul Needell/The Star-Ledger
Saturday October 04, 2008, 12:28 PM
Mike Shanahan. Art Shell. Mike White. Joe Bugel. Jon Gruden. Bill Callahan. Norv Turner. Shell again. Lane Kiffin. Tom Cable.
The once-brilliant football mind of Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis is now on its 10th head coach in the last 21 seasons; fifth in the six seasons since Callahan coached Oakland to the Super Bowl in ‘02. The cryptkeeper propped himself up for an ugly news conference on Tuesday meant to embarrass Kiffin while introducing Cable, the team’s offensive line coach, as the interim choice for the rest of the season. Is anything more “interim” than this job?
This glorious franchise and its “Commitment to Excellence” has been a laughingstock for far too long now. There will be no sign of a turnaround until Davis, 79, sells the team or backs away from the day-to-day operations. Nobody is holding their breath on either count.
Free of charge, we’ve come up with the ideal marriage of convenience for Davis, who is considered arsenic to almost any viable candidate on earth. And we know Davis has the guy’s phone number because he called our man on Thursday night to chat about things.
Former Giants coach Jim Fassel, who’s been out of the NFL since 2006, is the perfect choice for Davis. Fassel’s worked for Davis before as Oakland’s quarterbacks coach in ‘95 and is eager to land his second NFL head-coaching job. He was fired by the Giants in ‘04 after seven seasons, including three playoff trips and one Super Bowl loss.
“I want to get back,” Fassel told me last night from his Arizona home. “I want to go somewhere the organization wants to win. And I know Al Davis wants to win. I know he does.”
Davis just has a strange way of showing it. Fassel, 59, knows all the horror stories about the meddlesome Davis. Heck, Fassel’s son, John, is the Raiders assistant special-teams coach, so he has a direct line to what those on Kiffin’s staff have been through.
“I can only say that the year I was there I never got any interference,” said Fassel, a finalist for the Redskins’ job that went to Jim Zorn in January. “Nothing like that. I have no complaints with how Al treated me. He treated me very well.”
In theory, Fassel’s reputation as a quarterback guru should appeal to Davis. Central to Oakland’s future is second-year QB JaMarcus Russell, the first pick overall in the ‘07 NFL Draft. See how it all fits?
“Al knows me,” Fassel said. “He knows my work.”
Most people are sure to run and hide if Davis comes calling after the season. Fassel understands all the reasons why. In the end, though, they just may need each other. A marriage of convenience, indeed.
