PFT: tampering finding premature
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 at 1:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.
According to profootballtalk.com, a report circulated on the The National Football post earlier today saying Raiders owner Al Davis was informed of being in volation of NFL rules when he accused the New England Patriots of Randy Moss is premature.
Per PFT, the league has informed Davis “that if the Raiders have a tampering allegation to make, they should make it.”
The Raiders have not responded to a request made this morning to confirm or deny the original report.

Kiffin is a loser. He will never coach in the NFL. He was exposed as a fraud. He will be lucky to coach girls soccer at a middle school. Time for Lance to hit up Chuky and daddy for a job with Tampon Bay.
………..
Now this is what I love about our favorite Davis shill.
Oakglenn says the best Kiffin will do from here on out is coaching middle school girls’ soccer. He immediately follows this statement by saying that Kiffin will likely go to Tampa Bay!?!?!?
Tampa Bay is not middle school girls’ soccer. They’re actually a competitive NFL team, at 3-2 this season, and having won their division 2 of the last 3 seasons.
This means that at least regarding playoff potential, Kiffin going from Oakland to Tampa is a huge step forward.
Keep the laughs coming, Oakglenn.

I hope that Al settles on his 2009 Head Coach and new Football Exec as soon as possible. If you look at the list of 2009 Free Agents, the Raiders have some tricky decisions to take:
TE Tony Stewart UFA
TE Fred Wakefield UFA
P Shane Lechler UFA
OG Cooper Carlisle UFA
OT Seth Wand UFA
OL Chris Morris RFA
LB Sam Williams UFA
CB Nnamdi Asomugha UFA
CB Duane Starks UFA
FS Rashad Baker UFA
Apparantly Walter and Tuiasosopo are tied until 2010.
Obviously we would want to keep Asomugha, Lechler, Carlisle and Morris - but at what cost?
The others are just back-ups, cheap and disposable.
Overall, the 2009 FA market should be much quieter than 2008. There will be far fewer big names available and most of the better players will be RFA not UFA. Some good bargains but the Raiders will have to primarily strengthen through the draft.
Asomugha and Houshmanzadeh are probably the two best players up for grabs - franchise tags permitting.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
So is Colston playing this week? I think we have chance, just like I do every week. And so far we have been in position to win every game except one, and have only been able to close the deal once. I hope we learn how to close out games THIS WEEK.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Caribou Barbie: Let’s add danggoneit to that list. And probably isn’t a good idea to use it in a VP debate.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Sup Vegas
You going all grammer police on me too?
October 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Colston is a FA at the end of the season!
The Saints only gave him a short rookie contract.
But he will be very expensive - although not as costly as Javon Walker!
October 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Obviously we would want to keep Asomugha, Lechler, Carlisle and Morris - but at what cost?
one of the best (if not the best) P’s and CB’s in the league up for grabs? it’ll cost a lot, because both players probably want to win a championship before their skills deminish. Some players play for more than just money. Nnamdi & Shane have heart, not just talent. Burgess’ contract expires too. He and Burgess should have got paid over guys like Hall & Kelly.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:36 pm

October 7th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

October 7th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Burgess is contracted until 2010. He will be a FA at the same time as the likes of Morrison, Howard, Hall and Griffith.
The Raiders need to think very carefully about who they keep and at what cost. If the CAP stays, is it worth paying mega-bucks to keep a mega-star like Asomugha or should we be keeping money back to secure the likes of Howard and Morrison.
Even more reason why paying such huge monies to Walker and Hall was very, very dumb business.

Walker might get cut if he can’t regain form and show us (and Al) something the remaining 3/4 of the season. That’s a lot of guaranteed money wasted, but I think we can spread it out over several years, right? Hall & Asomugha will be Raiders for a long, long time. Al Davis loves CB’s, especially ones with speed. Even if Hall gets burned the whole season and finishes with 6 or 7 INT’s it’ll be worth it to Al. As long as Nnamdi stays the good natured guy that he is, he’ll stay in Oakland. Al isn’t afraid to pay high dollar for who he thinks are good players. Davis has always been a good business man. We won’t have to dump the whole team and start over like the Titans did a few years ago. And the Chiefs did last year, but just because they are stupid, not because of the salary cap.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
No practice today right? Jerry might not enlighten us with anything.

Ok I’m back What’s up Chaos
October 7th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
The Raiders will have to make a move on Nmadi soon after the season. Either they franchise or sign him to a long-term deal, can’t let him go out on the free market, if he sees how normal some places are he might jump ship. He also won’t sign another franchise tender, so 7 years $85 million will probably help him retire a Raider.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
The problem with franchising or resigning Asomugha is that we are already carrying big guarantee commitments to Walker, Hall, Kelly, Sands, Russell, Miller and McFadden. Knowing that we will need space to keep Howard and Morrison in 2010, I am just not sure we can find the money to hold Nnamdi.
Perhaps Al can get Walker to restructure his contract?
October 7th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
isn’t Nnamdi like 30 years old already? i wouldn’t give him a 7 year deal! maybe 4 years, 45 million
October 7th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

No practice today, day off. Thus, no practice fix.
Jerry, had best be getting an exlusive 1 on 1 interveiw, with Al…lol
October 7th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Dakota, good point.
If Al isn’t careful, we are going to end up a team with ten players on mega deals and 43 players on close to minimum deals.
This roster has to be rebalanced. We are already suffering from a lack of depth and focusing the funds on just a few stars isn’t going to help - especially if they under-perform - just like Walker and Hall.

October 7th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
i heard Davis & Kiffin were going to appear on the Jerry Springer show. you got tickets Jerry Mac???
October 7th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Well, after the coaching change this coming January, I think we can expect another top five pick next year too.
So, Al will have to find a way to fit the #2 pick in this coming draft in April and the #4 pick in the 2010 draft both under the cap. You know he will not trade them.
Just my prediction…and you guys know I am always right.
October 7th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
That would be…interviEw.. for the spellcheck cops, out there..

kudos to you bro
who will play for the Raiders for peanuts? players nobody else wants in free agency or draft picks under contract
October 7th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
The Kelly and Walker deals are heavily backloaded. If they play well enough (fat chance) then Al pays them, but if not Al will ask them to restructure or be cut ala Jordan with his undeserved contract number this year.
The cap is the area of least concern for me right now. We need a real GM.
October 7th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
take your pick: Matt Millen or Jim Fassel

Some of you guys and gals use Al as the scapegoat and the league tells the Raiders to not make any public statements regarding tampering? Kiffin could learn a thing or two from that, I think Davis has made his point. He exposed the double standard.

Spot on Scottish. Al needs to stop overpaying free agents with knee, head or attitude problems and start focusing in on the draft. Look at the Steelers, they never sign big name free agents to huge contracts, and they know when to let players leave when the time comes (oh, and they don’t churn through coaches either). Unfortunately, Al likes passing out the big bucks to other teams scraps and, as he freely admitted, he has a tough time releasing guys that need to go. Al needs to realized that with the jump in salary cap space, teams are able to retain quality players and most of the guys that hit the market, or become available via trade, have some major flaws (Walker, Hall, Harris etc etc etc)
Oh well, things will never change around here…except the coaches of course.
October 7th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
WOW, I just read that McCain has crashed FIVE planes in his career as a pilot! Four were clearly pilot error, including an ultralite in the 80s. The only one that wasn’t supposedly his fault was when they shot him down over Hanoi (although he could have evaded the SAMs were a better flyer). If John’s daddy weren’t the big boss back then he would have lost his wings long before he got captured and ratted out his country. Many other POWs were court martialed for the same anti-US statements Charlie obtained under torture.

October 7th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Barbie, the problem Al has created is that all his big contracts are back-dated and most will start paying out at the same time. Unless he can negotiate some major restructuring, we are going to be as broke as Lehmans in 2011 and 2012 - when Kelly, Hall, Russell, Miller, McFadden and the others start getting to the juicy years of their contracts. Al has stored up a lot of financial trouble.
And yes, we desperately need a top class (and empowered) GM. Not another brown-nose.
October 7th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
KK most all players try to get the money up front from the contract because they know they won’t make the goals to get the rest of the money. The singing bonus is basically what the contract is worth unless they make the probowl or finish in the top five of their position in the league.

The signing bonuses will have to be paid of course, but they are a small fraction of the ludicrous contract amount Al gave them. The real hurt will come if we cut Walker and can’t prorate the bonus. I say do it anyway…

Those contracts offer a potential to make say 70 million in Hall’s case, you guys are going over board with this money thing. Let them make what they can make while they can make it. There may not be a cap in two years anyway.
October 7th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Look up the contracts yourself El Clean. The last years on those contracts have huge numbers so the players and agents can get press attention.
If you think I am wrong, find the numbers.
October 7th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
There will be a cap if an agreement is reached before the capless year buddy….then what?
October 7th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

October 7th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
OOOONOOOO! HE CALLED BS ON ME!!!
It is not some outrageous claim I am making El Clean. Out side of the bonuses the yearly salaries are relatively small until 2011 or so. There are roster bonuses to consider though.
The reality is this: if they play badly (true so far for Walker) then we cut him or restructure, eating the bonus all at once. If they play really well we wont care what they are paid because we are winning.
October 7th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

How about Knapp setting up the pass with the run and vice versa, playaction, a few deep patterns to loosen up the safeties and linebackers, some screens to slow down the rush, zoneblocking for the run, ect…

October 7th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Realtors earn their cut, I mean they do have to put up that heavy sign and all. Oh, wait, that is just Century21.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
You never know about a coach until you see his team operate on the field.
However, I do like what I hear from Cable, so far about balance and scoring points.
And the fact that Knapp, somebody experienced, will be calling the plays.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
KoolKell go away and sell some poor soul a crappy ARM loan. The crisis is CAUSED by you idiot realtors.

Now, I believe the Raiders are in a better position to win this Sunday, the coaching situation is better
October 7th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
I’m not sold on Knapp. His offenses have been 1 in rushing because of Michael Vick. I dont remember one time he has had a serious passing offense. Vick was mostly running for his life in most games. Makes me worry.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Dakota,
if you had as much pride in the raiders that you do in your f’n lakers then maybe we would be a good team. as a matter o’fact i’m blaming you for all of this, you no pride hate’n mo fo
October 7th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Actually its not KK fault about the homes it’s my fault. The loan is an arm but it’s called an option arm/ Pick a pay/ choose your poison.
Thanks for the points!
October 7th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
El Dirty,
Yeah, you’re right about Knapp’s record. He didn’t have a JaMarcus Russell though. And Cable has said you throw to score and run to win.
Kiffin on the other hand, had nothing but disdain for the passing game.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Knapp’s passing offense in Atlanta was never ranked higher than 30. Vick had bad accuracy but a powerful arm. Hmmm that sounds like a QB I know.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
It will be interesting to see how Walker responds to being included in the game plan for a change. Because Kiffin made it quite clear, he didn’t think the Raiders could throw
October 7th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Man, Saints are gonna be pissed after that Monday Night loss. Wonder if our players are gonna be pissed, or rusty, or confused, or indifferent.

“KoolKell Says:
October 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Probably by dropping passes and/or getting injured.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Jerry thanks for that riveting report from PFT.COM,…did you learn that from journalism school?
October 7th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
BBB,
In so far as Russell’s accuracy, practice makes perfect. He hasn’t had much game practice because of Kiffin’s game plans. When he did throw, I thought he looked pretty good. Those TD passes to Higgins and Miller were pretty accurate.
His passer rating is what %85. Not great, but pretty good considering.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
We will see sunday. What we have as an offense. I think J-Mac will be more accurate than Vick… It would be nice if he had his wheels though.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
The difference between Vick and Russell, among many, is that Russell’s a pure
QB
October 7th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
“The problem with franchising or resigning Asomugha is that we are already carrying big guarantee commitments to Walker, Hall, Kelly, Sands, Russell, Miller and McFadden. Knowing that we will need space to keep Howard and Morrison in 2010, I am just not sure we can find the money to hold Nnamdi.”
Just get some of the big money guys to restructure and you can make the money appear out of thin air.. If the Raiders had a GM, these would be easy questions to answer. Javon Walker’s deal was a gut buster because he has not earned his money at all. It would be different if he actually played but didn’t play well…I’ve heard that he’s barely getting around outside of practice though so his hammy is pretty screwed up. I think that Russell will be willing to restructure to help the team and clear some cap space because he doesn’t play for the money, regardless of what many thought of his holdout. That was more hnis agent’s doing than his because he languished while waiting for his deal to get done.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Agreed Kool Kell, but you can’t make the point that Jam is a more accomplished passer than Vick was in 2006, which is when Knapp last called plays and led Atlanta to a dead last passing offense ranking. Anybody who thinks Knapp is gonna magically turn this offense around is just suffering from non-fact-based optimism. Jim Fassell in 09′ believe it!
October 7th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
we have the day off right?
October 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Nnamdi might get franchised in 2009, after that he walks. I absolutely guarantee he was offered the same contract we ended up giving D. Hall and he turned it down flat. Nnamdi is gonna get paid absolute top dollar no matter what team he plays on, he knows it, his agent knows it, and all the teams who need a CB know it. The only question is does he want to play for his 6th head coach here in Oakland or on a team that wants to win.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
what the hEl1 is Jerry doing, it has to be personal of business. so what is going on???
October 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Jim Fassel will be the coach in 09 for sure, only because if he doesnt take the gig, Al will make life miserable for Jims son whos on the current staff,…Jim Fassel has all the qualifications,…yes-man,…retread,…no other offers.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

October 7th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
ET was our last good safety. RIP
October 7th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
By 2009, if nobody else comes knocking, Jim Fassell is going to be just desperate enough to coach the Raiders. I think he and Al will both feel more comfortable with a shorter contract, and with Al thinking that we have a great roster right now, he might just be willing to pay Fassell, in the hopes of winning NOW.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Look here people,..this sundays game,…dont bother,…first of all the Saints are pissed,…and the Raiders have thrown in the towel…like a week ago today, the day Al proved to the world hes clinically insane,…so usually non contending teams quit around week 13 or so,..the Raiders decided to quit last tuesday,..and I dont blame them,..how can they get up for games when the owner does everything possible to ensure they lose…Im goin fishing next sunday morning.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
BBB,
Nah, I won’t say Knapp is going to turn us into high-scoring offense. I’m just saying, at least he dosn’t think throwing ball is stupid, like Kiffin would say.
I think JaMarcus Russell even now is better than Vick had ever been as a passer.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

October 7th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Word to that lyn.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I think you just want to believe that Kool Kell, so do I, but it simply isn’t true. Jam is still green, and Kiffin was doing what he could to generate offense with an inexperienced QB, bad WR’s, and a shaky O-line (in pass protect). Kiffin MIGHT be a “professional liar” but he is definitely a professional offensive play-caller. We shall see this weekend though, I hope it’s that simple.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I don’t think the Raiders will quit until they are mathmatically eliminated from the playoffs.
I don’t think they will quit on Russell. I don’t think Fargass will quit, I don’t think Dmac will quit. I don’t think the O-line will quit.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
I find it funny that a lot of you guy’s sit there and try to figure was we will lose instead of win. sad man very sad.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
The Namdi issue, as pretty much everything else going on with the Raiders at this moment, are all tied to one thing. How Tom Cable, and the Raiders do this season. I think it is pretty safe to assume that if we end up with a 8-8 record or better, with no more signs of dysfunction, and with some serious signs of improvement on offense, it is VERY safe to assume that not only will Nnamdi re-sign, but Cable will be signed, all assistants will be asked to re-sign, and we might even find us a good “Executive” in the off-season, as Al mentioned, that will get Walker to restructure his contract, and hopefully provide some more stability and organization within the franchise.
But this is based on the fact we actually improve drastically on and off the field. Which is not impossible, granted all the things going on. It will just take a lot of patience and a lot of egos to actually switch to the “team” mentality, and let go of any hurt feelings, and look passed all the nonsense that might come up.
One thing is for certain, you can bet we won’t get any help from the media, or the NFL.
The Autumn Wind is Blowing, and with it, Good Fortune It Brings… GO RAIDERS!
October 7th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Mike Vick was a better runner and easily a better passer the nRussell will ever be,..and I predict Vick will be out next qb in a couple years….the Raiders will only be looked at as a sideshow and not as a legit team until Al is dead.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
I have seen the Raiders quit numerous times over the years, but I just don’t see this particular roster quitting. This team is young, and every single game is crucial to their development, so even if we are 1-14 going into week 17, these players will be hustling their a$$es off.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
AMEN BBB
October 7th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
BBB,
Kiffin may indeed have been right. I just think it’s a bad message to convey publicly. Look at what Atlanta is doing with their rookie QB. Rookie or no, what are you going to do. The game is football, which includes running and passing. You have to be able to do both. If you’re not good at something, you damn well better get better at it. You can’t just say we can’t do that and ignore it.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Dickota,..the Raider fans of today have no reason to see it otherwise,..when I was at the Charger game,..15-0 at the half,…everyone in my section was discussing how would the Raiders lose the game,..asking each others opinions on how the Raiders would find a way to lose,…not a sinlge fan thought the Raiders were going to win that game even with a nice lead, at home,…and the Chargers never thought at all that they would lose it.

October 7th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Yep, that’s where I think Kiff and Al had a disconnect. Kiffin was trying to develop the offense for future greatness, and no matter what Al says publicly, he always wants to win now. I agree with you though KK, Jam should have been taking his lumps from week 1.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
BART I disagree,…they may be “hustling” to you,..but running around, flying around, isnt hustling,..this team, this organization I should say, has no desire to win,..no will to win,…they might pull out a good play once in a while,..but winning isnt even on their radar,…and it wont be until Al is dead.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
This week will tell a lot in which direction the team is going. The Saints have a short week and turn the ball over and the “Cable guys” will show up between 10 and 1pm.

October 7th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
The Raiders should try to get a trade done with Russell,…hes a wasted pick,…if some team would take him and his salary it should get done…you know he wants out of here desperatly.

Tell that to the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers. They went 15-1 with only 358 pass attempts on the year. The difference was, they had a good enough defense to win without the pass, and they didn’t have an owner airing the dirty laundry such that it became a big deal that the coach was not prepared to feature his quarterback.
Matt Ryan is having himself a nice little season but he was considered to be more NFL-ready than Jamarcus. Oh and he’s only throwing 2 passes per game more than Russell has.
I can’t believe how many people are buying into Al’s spin that Kiffin sabatoged our passing game by dissing Jamarcus. We have horrible pass blocking, horrible receivers, a defense without depth that can’t handle being on the field for their fair share of the game, no experience at the QB position, and not even a knowledgeable backup QB to guide our starter. Kiffin did the right thing by emphasizing the run. His predecessors did the wrong thing by abandoning the run.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
The Saints loss looks familiar just can’t recall who loses like they did last night.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Narco Bob,
Take that bait and stick it up yur assez/out.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
One more thing. And everyone knows this; The Raiders need to find a way to finish games. This is not a new trend, but it is happening to a new team. I say new, because about, if not more than 50% of the team only has 1 year or less with us. Offensively, we need to gel, and build some team chemistry. As much as Al loves to deny the existence of such thing, it does exist. And it is a key factor to winning. I believe it was Al himself that said, “You get team chemistry, when you start winning.” He said it implying that it doesn’t exist, but read that again, and you will see the opposite. You start winning, because you got team chemistry.
I think we will lose the next couple games, but that by week 8, we will put a string of games together that in the end will lead us to a 8-8 record. Maybe I’m being too naive by thinking this, but hey, at this point, I’m expecting anything to happen…
GO RAIDERS!
October 7th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Long live Al Davis!!!
October 7th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Matt Ryan comes in and starts from day one,..kicks butt,..Matt Ryan is soooo much better then Russell,…not even close….dont give a crap about Russell held out, missed camp,..bfd,…Ryan had a month of camp and started,…Russell is never going to be even a mediocre qb.
October 7th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
This team has had trouble winning, but McFadden, Fargas, Bush, Branch, Russell, Wilson, Miller, Higgins and a few others are still playing with fire, regardless of the record. This is the young nucleus of the team that needs to carry us forward.
October 7th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
trev,
I don’t think there is any spin. think Kiffin didn’t trust himself to open up the passing game.
just look at the game with SD some of the pass plays where not Kiffin.

October 7th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
BART,..those players are ok, not great,..McFadden has a chance but will never be healthy consistantly,…but you seem to not want to take the reality that Al and his insanity will never allow the team to succeed,..a coach every other year,..coodinators….thats not a formula to win,..Im convinced Al is sabotaging the team when he sees it getting better.
