No sign of Burgess
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 9th, 2008 at 11:30 am in Oakland Raiders.
Defensive end Derrick Burgess was not with his teammates when warmups and drills concluded and team sessions began.
Burgess re-injured a triceps injury Monday. Coach Tom Cable said the club was still determining the severity of the injury.
There appeared to be no other glaring omissions.
More to come later . . .

Well that’s too bad. But we’ve seen this before. He tends to figure out his injuries himself doesn’t he?
October 9th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Don’t underestimate not having Burgess in the lineup. Given Ryan’s aversion to blitzing, we rely on Burgess to provide pressure when we only send 4.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:39 am
No Burgess means Jay Richardson & Kalimba Edwards start at DE. not too bad. That also means we can’t use J-Rich at DT when Sands & Kelly are gassed late in the game. Warren probably still isn’t 100% either (yet). I don’t think any of us here want to see Fred Wakefield at DT during any part of Sunday’s game - even as a reserve.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:41 am
to keep the last convo going…
I am a huge Notre Dame fan, I watched all of Brady Quinn’s games, the guy was a great college player. That being said I was relieved that we didn’t get him in the draft. I don’t think he has what it takes to be a great player in the NFL, and I am especially glad we didn’t get him since Kiffin is gone, because with Kiffin goes his west coast offense. Russell looks like he could adapt to any NFL offense, he could stand in the pocket like a Manning, but has wheels like a Big Ben. Now that we are sorting throught the pieces in the aftermath of the Kiffin era, we should all be thankful we have Russell, and not Quinn.

Agreed we need Veteran WR’s badly. One thing I never see is our wideouts talking to J-Mac after a blown play or a good one. Seems as if there is no communication amongst them. IT KILLS ME! So many young guys who dont talk to each other and ask questions to improve. Ugh!
October 9th, 2008 at 11:42 am
I think Kalimba and Jay Richardson will be just fine plus Wilson putting pressure on the QB.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:44 am
The overall status of the team is still very young and inexperienced. This is not the situation you want if you want to win now. We need some highly talented veterans that already have the know and can still get it done. One area is the WR. I was never sold on J.Walker and Curry’s best years were when he was playing in the slot. We should bring in a Eric Moulds or a Keenan McCardell to push these guy’s and to provide some know how. Let JLH, Walker and Curry compete with somee vets that have actually done a few things in the league. We needs some highly talented vets like we used to get before this youth movement got started.
*********************************
i agree, the sad reality of our WR corps is that both starters (Walker & Curry) are the least productive. Walker is one of the top 10 highest paid WR’s in the league! Even a WR corps of Higgins, Lelie, Schilens, Watkins and (Arman Shields, Drisan James or Will Buchanon) would be better than what we’re seeing on the field right now.

Agreed. I wanted AP but I knew J-Mac was coming. I would have rather had him then Quinn but Quinn made more sense. Did I just confuse myself? lol
October 9th, 2008 at 11:44 am
El Dirty,
J-Russ needed to play last year when it was clear the season was over. To hold him back and not let him play the actual position only hinders J-Russ’s progress and lengthens the time the team has to wait for their offensive leader to get ready. All this he’s RAW stuff is a major load of crud. J-Russ was no more RAW than Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco. J-Russ is not Steve McNair. McNair went to a D2 college while J-Russ played on the National stage. McNair needed that time on the bench and watered down offense to learn the game at the top level. J-Russ doesn’t have as much a hurdle to overcome. Plain and simple we are behind at the QB position because of Kiffin. Now Kiffin is still calling the J-Russ and saying God-knows what. Just get Kiffin away. Far, Far away Kiffin. Far away.

regarding your answer to if hall folds, I totally agree, RR will look even more stupid, then..
as for your post 6, I agree Russell has the size to be a pocket passer, he has the mobility to move outside the pocket.. so I believe you are right he can play any offense as quinn is QCO kinda QB..
October 9th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Tom Cable will soon find that he is in over his head as Raiders coach and after a few weeks of Al’s increasing meddling as the losses continue he will be looking forward to the end of the season and getting the hell out of Oakland.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Hopefully they will slide Richardson over to the left-side, since they have some time to practice that before Sunday. They can start getting ready for life without Burgess.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Kalimba Edwards is a decent pass rusher. He gets lost against the run. Richardson is the opposite. Losing Burgess hurts, but we have to make do with what we have.
We have to pressure brees to have a chance.

How bout Walker?
October 9th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Totally agree Dirty, Quinn made way more sense at the time, but he just is not a Raider, I never saw it.
Big Al’s Goon: The difference between Flacco and Ryan compared to Russell: Russell was drafted as a junior, which is still the single-best gauge of how well a Qb performs in the NFL. QB’s drafted as juniors have fared FAR worse than those drafted as seniors. Jam was raw, but we are moving forward now, and Kiffin was right to build up his confidence slowly.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:51 am
El Dirty and RaiderRockstar,
I was very hopeful when we first signed J. Walker but as time went on I became less and less optimistic. Walker and Curry need to be pushed and JLH needs to continue to get better. We have an entirely new WR corp on the bench and no-one to push them or to show them how you play WR in this league at a high level. A highly talented vet with a few years left in the tank would help the WR corp and J-Russ tremedously.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Goon
I honestly believe J-Mac was more of a product of having great WR’s in college. I also believe he would have gotten hurt or murdered last year. The only reason our sack count lowered last year was because Mclown ran for his life. If J-Mac was there for the beginning of training camp and everything else I would have had the same train of thought. But tell me this doesn’t it seem as if J-Mac still hasn’t learned the playbook. I’m just saying its either him or the wideouts.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:54 am
They already have a highly talented vet showing the WR’s how to play in this league, his name is James Lofton. They need to start building chemistry between Russell and the WR’s that are still gonna be here in two or three years.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Walker and Curry need to be pushed on the bench. Raiders need to go out and find a competent veteran receiver or make a trade for a great receiver.
Our receiving corps is an embarrassment right now

El Dirty,
Russell has no primary receiver to throw to. His tight end is held back in pass protection because of our “tender to the touch” offensive tackles. Hell, look at how “average” Peyton Manning looks with his battered o-line. A QB needs a supporting cast.
Our supporting cast is very, very limited
October 9th, 2008 at 11:57 am
They need a talented and young WR like Boldin, or Crabtree, then they just need to let the other youngsters develop. Higgins is already showing promise now that he wiped that deer-in-the-headlights look off his face. Shields and Schilens could be decent if they are given time and reps.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Different Offense when Walker is in.
Man they looked good on their opening drive against SD.
it would be nice to get someon who could add quality for more than a handful of plays though…
October 9th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Arman “Spiderman” Shields could be VERY good if he can stay healthy. Great hands, good routes and instincts.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:59 am
BBB,
I understand what your trying to sell but it’s week 6 of J-Russ’s second year in the League and we still don’t know what we have in J-Russ other than what we already knew when we drafted him. Big, mobile with a big arm. Other than that we still don’t know much about him. You have to let QB’s take their lumps and learn the ropes. All this stuff about confidence being loss doesn’t fly. If J-Russ’s confidence is that fragile then he would never make it in the NFL anyway. Better to find out now then two or three years down the line.

Imagine what we would be saying about JRuss had Miller not slipped on that route in the end zone.
Russell will be fine once he gets some help. Some of that help is coming this week with Fargas and a healthy DMAC.
Sh&t, any QB would struggle with the receivers and offensive tackles we have out there.

Exactly.
Russell was never meant to be the over night messiah.
Never forced to be accurate in college and only had the one good year.
Kiffin’s dink dunk check down offense only helped him especially considering our piss poor tackles protection.
Forced J to be a little more accurate and work on touch.
In college he did have wide outs who ran down errant balls. In the NFL DB’s are so fast and good that stuff rarely cuts it.
Unless your Green Bay with Brett Favre.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Kiffin never emphasized the passing game, never considered going to WR’s. Flatly said it could not be done. His whole teaching emphasized Dump-offs to the backs. Of course there’s no chemistry. Plus Drew Carter out/ Curry??????wtf.

BBB,
James Lofton is a WR’s coach. Major differnce between a coach only talking about what he use to do and a highly talented vet talking and showing you by example. Also another thing Lofton can’t do, provide some much needed production at the WR position. This WR’s will develop two or three year down the line stuff is for the unforseen future. We need players that can play now at high level and can show the young and developing how to get the job done.

Big Al’s Goon,
I guess we will have to agree to disagree. But it is a very fine line, between babying a QB and battering a QB, that is for sure. But the good news is that the kid gloves are off now, and Jam has had 6 full games to build him up. We’ll see what happens, he might have more to learn, or he might be flying out of the gate, either way he will be at the top soon enough, and I think Kiff was starting slacken the leash anyway.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Guys have to layoff Russell. First off, he has the right demeanor and a great attitude. Second, he is playing what is a rookie season. Third, he has no WR talent and the tight end has to block too much. Fourth, he hasn’t been given a reliable o-line. Finally, he hasnt been given too many opportuntiies to put up big numbers(we do have a good running game)
Let the guy develop and please LET HIM MAKE HIS SHARE OF MISTAKES IF THEY COME.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
BBB:
Gloves may be off on Russell, but he’s very green SIX games? Hardly enough to make him viable.
Shows a lot of “rookie” traits.
Has a tell when under center. Occasionally gets s rolling start or leans away from center just b-4 the snap. Locks onto receivers, doesn’t make proper reads, has no sense of urgency under pressure, little pocket feel and of course accuracy and touch.
All things to be expected from a guy so green and none of them the kiss of death. More minor tweaks and things that will come with experience and time.
Not a game dominating QB yet, but man, he shows signs of being a great leader / QB.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Nnamdi21,
I don’t share your optimism with Shields. A mid round pick from 1AA. I don’t think we are good enough to be taking chances on injured players fitting this profile. Even with Drew Carter, we should have been looking at other positions to find depth. A defensive tackle or end in the 4th round would have been nice
October 9th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Well Big Al, that’s what Walker was supposed to be, so we are gonna have to live with that now. I don’t think we need vets just for the sake of experienced players though, we need productive players that are on the younger side, because this team is rebuilding, lets face it.

WR’s in the 1st? Not if it was anything like this years crop o’ wide outs!
I havffe no idea if there are some serious 1st round WR’s that are gonna be there next year, but I think a proven vet might be in order…
far as Tackle I say move Harris to RT and install Henderson.
Seriously, a few missed blocks against the Bills late, but all in all, an impressive debut.
One thing some people missed is how the line seemed to gel with him in there.
Gallery took him under his wing and helped him onthe field during games and that helped Gallery focus too…
October 9th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Agreed about Burgess,Brien!
and why the hell are the Raiders looking at short term solutions at DE, when we only have 3 DT’s on the roster. Edwards and Scott are gonna be way more effective than some cast-offs that don’t know the system. Forget Burgess, we need to make room for a 4th DT on this roster.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
RaiderRockstar,
I agree with your post but would modify slightly. I would be okay with the Raiders getting a proven receiver via trade or free agency. Roy Williams, T.J Houshminzada (spelling) or even Ocho Cinco and using our 1st pick to grab an o-tackle or great young defensive talent (linebacker or defensive end)
October 9th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
BBB,
We definitely will have to agree to disagree but look at it like this in order for J-Russ to be the best QB he can he is going to have to gain experience by playing the position. With the headed mosnster backfield that we have J-Russ could hand-off the ball almost every play but will that improve J-Russ as a QB? Of course J-Russ has more to learn, alot to learn infact. But we as fans have to be patient with him just like Colt fan was patient with P. Manning. But when you see a coach deliberately not allowing a QB to play QB, crippling his progress and learning all the while continuing to lose games; that coach has to go and that QB needs to play. J-Russ needs to be knocked down a few times. He also needs to throw a few int’s so he can learn from his mistakes.

Yvonne Walker was a bad pick for the amount of money the Raiders paid him. Period. Now if his contract wasn’t so large I would have a different opinion of Yvonne.
Yvonne needs to step the “f” up starting this week. Kiffin is gone, Davis loves him, and Cable says we are throwing more.
I want to see separation, I want him to “dominate” his the Saints secondary. I want him to attract double teams. That’s what Yvonne is being paid for!!!!!!!
October 9th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Walker wasn’t my choice, you are preaching to the choir Big Al’s Goon. Take it up with your boss. But productive, veteran recievers don’t grow on trees, you have to draft and develop great WR’s. The only WR’s available on the FA market and for trades, usually have a major weakness or two.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Arman Shields hasn’t even gotten a chance to play and people are saying he was a terrible pick. If it wasn’t for the emergence of Todd Watkins, and Chaz, Shields would be on the roster now.
All the coaches say he looks good, and he may be the steal of the draft. Wait until you see him.
Ricky Brown, Trevor Scott(3-4), Kalimba Edwards(3-4), and Tyvon Branch (big Nickel), and Alston give the Raiders enough options at LB.
Sam Williams is a waste of a good roster spot. I would like to see Brandon Moore instead of him.

s&B,
You are right it is show time for Javon. I was baffled that Javon was not targeted more for the past three weeks. I have a feeling Kiffin was trying to work around him (prove some sort of point about practice and sunday probably).
Also DMAC needs 20 touches or he was a waste of a pick. i don’t care if he was hurt: he was suited up and was running fine. He is a threat. Hopefully Cable will do what kiffin seemed dead set against… getting the ball to the play makers… throw JLH in the mix on that too.

KoolKell,
I despise the Republicans as much as anyone! I also despise the Democrats too. This economic crisis is the result of the American people electing people who are unqualified their jobs. Too many lawyers….Too many sycophants….too many people who spent their entire lives in politics.
This country may never recover from this. Our assets can be bought off the cheap. Look for China, Russia and others to engorge themselves on cheap American assets soon.
Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Bush Jr. Carter, EVERYONE IN CONGRESS FOR THE LAST 45 YEARS have brought this country to its knees!!!!!!!!!

Ricky Brown has done a decent job. last game he had a batted down pass and a forced fumble. He seems to have some speed: and he is the best option for strong side.
He is not a good lb yet… he may never be, but he can play the position.
The Defense just needs to keep putting the right personnel packages in the game. i want to see more 3-4 with Kalimba, Burgess, or even scott.
This year is most likely done, so develop the players that have potential: Brown is in the mix.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that owner Al Davis has received a letter from the NFL informing him that the Raiders are subject to discipline for publicly accusing the Patriots of tampering with Randy Moss.
Oakland risks losing anywhere from $250K in fines to multiple draft picks. The Raiders would probably use the picks on Sam Williams and John Bowie types, so the fine would hurt much more. Davis claimed the Pats broke NFL rules by trying out Moss before acquiring him from Oakland. More than anything, the situation shows how inept the Raiders’ personnel department (Davis) has become. At the time, they believed Moss “couldn’t run anymore.” Oct. 9 - 2:33 am et

The bottom line is that the baby boomer generation could not step up to their responsibilities. They destroyed families and created a “me too” culture. Now we are paying for it. Personally, I think anyone over 45 should be banned from running for any political office. That generation, baby boomers, have done enough!
October 9th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
The defense has not been able to keep up the pressure in the 4th. Rob Ryan needs to use more zone blitzes in the 4th: you do not have to send 5 or 6 on every play, but you do have to move around players to get favorable matchups. It seems Ryan is to content on just lining up and beating people. I like watching Johnson’s defense in Philly. They bring the heat. Same thing with Spagnola in NY.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis received a letter from the NFL this week saying, in essence, that if he has evidence the New England Patriots tampered with his team prior to a 2007 trade involving Randy Moss, he should present it.
The letter was confirmed by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
An NFL source firmly denied to ESPN that the Raiders were threatened with sanctions in the letter. Tuesday, a report by the National Football Post said the NFL sent a formal letter telling the Raiders they were subject to penalties for the public accusation of tampering.
There is an NFL policy that does say that teams can be subject to sanctions for issuing false allegations in public.
The punishment for violating the policy could range from a substantial fine — $250,000 or more — to docking the Raiders one or more draft picks, or both, NFL sources told ESPN.
Davis said the Patriots had tampered with Randy Moss before a deal in April 2007 that brought the wide receiver to New England for a fourth-round choice the weekend of the NFL draft. Patriots coach Bill Belichick denied the claim by Davis that New England had a workout with Moss before obtaining him in the trade.
In a June 5, 2008, memo distributed by Goodell to NFL clubs entitled “Policy on Integrity of the Game and Enforcement of Competitive Rules,” the commissioner informed NFL team officials that competitive rules violations must be made in a timely manner. Davis’ accusations against the Patriots came 18 months after the transaction occurred.
The memo also warns team owners and officials that making false claims leaves them open to NFL-imposed sanctions
October 9th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
The NFL better not take away a draft pick. That hurts the fans. Make Al pay for that mistake out of his own pocket

October 9th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
LMN,
I heard about it, but I didn’t know it was so bad:
Iceland has approached Russia about a loan of €4 billion, or $5.5 billion, to help see it through the crisis, but Haarde said no agreement had been reached.
An IMF intervention in Iceland, which would necessarily involve accepting a series of harsh measures to restore fiscal and monetary stability, would underline the extraordinary reversal in the country’s fortunes after a decade-long, debt-fueled binge by the country’s banks, businesses and some private citizens. The banks, while avoiding the toxic mortgage securities that have humbled Wall Street, expanded aggressively at home and abroad. When credit tightened and the krona fell this year, they were unable to finance their debts.
In these circumstances, going to the IMF “is probably the only thing Iceland can do,” said Richard Portes, an economist at the London Business School.

With a massive frame, good mobility for his size and possibly the strongest passing arm in football, QB JaMarcus Russell has a skill set similar to that of Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. And although the Raiders expected Russell’s development to be a long process, some of the blame for the passing game’s failings falls to Kiffin. His schemes lacked imagination and were too conservative, especially for an offense whose run game should have made the play-action pass a natural weapon. WRs Javon Walker, Ashley Lelie and Chaz Schilens (an intriguing seventh-round pick) have excellent size-speed ratios and can pressure defenses on the back end. That would create space underneath for WR Ronald Curry, an athletic possession receiver, and WR Johnnie Lee Higgins, who has the explosiveness to turn a slant route into a big gainer. Without fear of the occasional deep ball, opposing defenses have been able to overplay the run with eight in the box, pressure Russell and tighten up coverage on his receivers.
Although Russell likely stunted his own growth by leaving college early and missing training camp as a rookie holdout, he is capable of more right now. He has hit his spots when given time, and his frequent use of TE Zach Miller suggests he is reading the field. He has had enough time to get in synch with the offense, gain an understanding of coverage concepts and learn his hot reads. The protection is leaky, but Russell moves well — an advantage that needs to be exploited. Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp incorporated the spread option into his West Coast offense to maximize Michael Vick’s abilities during his time in Atlanta. With Kiffin gone, Knapp has the freedom to create designs that get Russell away from pressure and challenge defenses downfield more often. Kiffin didn’t seem to trust Russell, but the Raiders can’t afford to coddle their quarterback any longer.

Chris Rock hasn’t been a black comedian since the mid 90s so try again troll boy

Brien
I have been on the same page for a long time now, even before the internet. The banksters are stealing the land just like Jefferson warned us.
The politicians have stopped paying any attention at all to the Constitution that they swore to uphold.
Its too early too shoot them and too late to stop them.

Chris Rock shall always be the crackhead “Pookie” from New Jack City

Andrews Mom= exactly, but people want to call me an “idiot”
People from the past have gave warning after warning but morons wont listen. No bigger morons than Obama supporters who are down for him because he looks like he is black. That is a dumbest reason to vote for someone

Troll Brien, that is so old. We had a John president during that time!

The only way out of this mess is to win back the trust of the American people. Make all of these white collars do the frog walk, take away their pensions when they are sentenced to long terms at the prisions they have been supporting.
But it wont happen. They will ride this horse till it is dead taking pensions and every other nickle from America before they retire to the latest safe spot to spend the billions they stole.

Message to Javon Walker: Make some plays this Sunday, or retire!

S&B,
You have to have a certain detachment to examine reality accurately.
Obviously you voted Bush
The Trickle down has been tried twice, and failed twice, Did you notice the dow fell 670 today, below 9,000 for the first time since 03′ Massive layoffs. or
The Clinton Democratic era produced the longest span of economic expansion in history. Produced 22million new jobs.
We lost about 32 military men in 8 years.
wtf are you talking about? Look at the record!
They are not the same, that’s just a convienient excuse for people ignorant of history and don’t know any better.
Low-information voters.

The fact is America forgot the basic principles of the past.
1. Save your money when you want to buy something
2. Raise your family (and, if possible, don’t divorce if there are kids involved)
3. Walk softly and carry a big stick
4. Don’t measure your worth by your possessions
5. Did I say raise your family…..
We stopped doing those things when the baby boomer generation took control. This happened across every race, ethic group and income class. The baby boomer generation DID NOT TAKE THE LESSONS OF THEIR PARENTS….so here we are!

They built the entire thing on a sheet of cardboard, stealing the life savings of decent hard working people and all they had to do was make phone calls and shuffle paper while they raped America.
Then to add insult to injury the president gets on the soapbox, and threatens us with a great depression if we dont sign the banker bailout bill.
John and Barry went back to where they use to do the job they were elected for, made a big stink about it, blew some smoke and signed off the banker bailouts after 400 pages of pork, of course.
Screw all of them.

KoolKell,
Actually, no I didn’t vote for Bush. Never did. Didn’t think he was smart enough. I agree that Ir@q was a terrible mistake. No argument from me. And guess what, I WILL NOT BE VOTING FOR MCCAIN EITHER!!!!!
But here’s what I don’t like about the democrats. We cannot afford any increase in spending. Whether it be tax cuts for the “rich”, health care, Ir#q or anywhere else. Paying off our social security and medicare obligations WILL bankrupt the country in 10 - 20 years. FACT! Also, having 5% of the population foot the bill for 95% of the population isn’t sustainable. Jobs are ultimately created by entrepreneurs and business. Not government.
I think Obama overestimates how much government can create jobs or provide health care. Setting you up for the same disappointment that GWB gave to his followers.
We need a 3rd party!

I agree, there’s alot less decency in this society than most others.
In that case, Vote Obama, certainly.
