Saints’ offense a blast from the past
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, October 11th, 2008 at 1:47 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders coach Tom Cable points to the New Orleans Saints as an example of how good a passing offense can be.
It’s also a reminder of how good the Raiders used to be.
The 2008 Saints are doing a pretty fair imitation of the 2002 Raiders, with Drew Brees playing the role of Rich Gannon.
That was the season coach Bill Callahan and offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, wanting to get Jerry Porter on the field along with Tim Brown and Jerry Rice and best utilize the rushing-receiving talents of Charlie Garner, turned Gannon loose.
Balance was fine for gymnastics, the Raiders were throwing the ball. Gannon, who will be the CBS analyst Sunday, set NFL records with 418 completions (in 618 attempts) and 11 games with 300-plus yards passing.
Brees, in his first year as a full-time starter for the San Diego Chargers, was playing close attention. Saints coach Sean Payton, who worked on the Phladelphia Eagles offensive staff with Jon Gruden and Callahan, has turned Brees loose the same way the Raiders did with Gannon.
“Everybody kind of tweaks (the system) and makes it their own, and that’s what coach Payton has done, but a lot of it goes back to the same lineage,” Brees said. “Actually, I have ton of respect for Rich Gannon, playing against him and just kind of studying him and that sort of thing as a young quarterback.
“I think he was one of the great quarterbacks there for a long time and really had mastered that system to the point where, you talk about being able to avoid sacks, and get the ball out, throw completions, and just have a lot of success, he was one of those guys that you watched.”
Through five games, Brees is completing 68.6 percent of his passes (133-for-194) for 1,673 yards and nine touchdowns, a 334.6-yards per game pace which projected over 16 games would give him 5,354 yards, breaking Dan Marino’s 5,084-yard standard. Brees broke Gannon’s completion record last season with 440.
Not bad for a guy who didn’t get so much as a sniff from the Raiders when he became a free agent following the 2005 season, with the Chargers opting to go forward with Philip Rivers as their quarterback. The decison was made easier when Brees sustained a torn labrum and needed rotator cuff surgery after being injured in his last game.
One of the first people Brees called after the surgery was Gannon, who had similar surgery in 2003.
“That was the last time I talked to him, because I was asking for advice and maybe a little bit of direction because he had been a guy who had gone through a labrum tear and a rotator cuff at some point in his career on his throwing shoulder, so he had experienced that kind of thing,” Brees said. “He was a great resource for me.”
When Brees went on the market, only the Miami Dolphins showed serious interest, and then they opted for Daunte Culpepepper instead, trading a second-round draft pick to Minnesota. The Raiders never made so much as a phone call.
“I don’t remember them ever showing any interest,” Brees said. “There were some teams early on that showed some interest but in the end the only ones that were serious about it were Miami and New Orleans. Obviously at that time, coming off my shoulder, I was just looking for somebody to believe in me and believe that I would come back. Obviously there weren’t many of those teams out there.”
As Gannon did in 2002, Brees is spreading the ball around to different receivers and relying heavily on ball-control “long-handoffs.” Gannon threw often to Garner, who caught 94 passes. Brees uses Reggie Bush, who leads the NFL with 38 receptions, and estimates half of them come on checkdowns.
“The thing that makes him so good is he has no favorites,” Raiders cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. “He doesn’t discriminate. He’ll get his fifth receiver the ball as quick as he’ll go to his No. 1.”
The Raiders, meanwhile will attempt to get their own passing offense in gear against a Saints team which has been attacked successfully through the air.
“You really have to look at (New Orleans) and say, `Hey, that’s what you really want to become, because they’re really on time, they do things very, very quickly, and their receivers are good route-runners,” Cable said.
Raider Nation out in force
Judging from the presence of Raiders gear all over Bourbon Street and the French Quarter Friday night, it seems a lot of fans circled this game on their calendars and made room their budgets for what can only be described as an adults-only Disneyland.
The Raiders haven’t played in New Orleans since 2000, winning 31-22.
Saw more people wearing Raiders jerseys than Saints jerseys, and talked to more than a few who immediately recognized colleague Monte Poole and wanted to stop and talk football.

Let’s see, what kind of Raider fans are in here today:
Ones making comparisons to this team and our ‘83 team, and claiming that Cable will somehow get this team to 8-8. I’ll try tomorrow, when there’s a more sane group of fans here. Till then, bye.

October 11th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
We can beat these Saints. Put pressure on Brees, contain Bush, get first downs in the fourth quarter to protect the lead. Simple as that.

I’m hoping He shows some intensity and emotion.
I expect the Team will be energized and confident.
It will also be interesting to see how Cable/Knapp run the Offense.
I’d love to see a text book Win. Get up early, play well in all 3 phases and close out out by playing keep away in the 4th.

Is this part of your comedy routine?
The Saints are #4 in the League against the run. It’d be nice to simply run them over, but I don’t know…
Rookie Cedrick Ellis wasn’t exactly tearing the place down, but his absence could make things alittle easier in protection.
Javon and Miller could be crucial or Lelie could finally have a big game. Likely someone will need to have a big day thru the air for Oakland.
DMC is not full speed it seems and he has been lousy with his turf toe. I understand D’s have to respect him when he’s in, but he is favoring his right foot so bad, his cuts are horrible and even caused the injury to Guard Cooper Carlisle.
I hope he’s back up to par. Best O lineman we got.
October 11th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
I’m fairly sick of Rich Gannon who’s bitterness at getting robbed so many times in a row of a deserved SB ring has made him Golum out a bit (Me precious!)
Tired of hearing about him hanging out and giving lectures for the Bucs.
He has the gaul to be upset and slightly offened there is a picture at the Bucs facility of him in their trophy case of him getting crushed by the rush in SB 35.
Get over it. You’ll take their damn money, so quit whining about being a loser.
Thanks for the great football in the 2000’s but your obvious anger detracts from your Raider broadcasts.
Face it.
You lost.
Now back to the dust bin.

Rich Gannon and John Gruden were the best thing to happen to this team since they won the Super Bowl. We should build statues of them outside the stadium.
October 11th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
The team really misses Rich’s leadership. That is painfully obvious.

We thumped our chests all offseason about how good out pass defense was gonna be. Tomorrow will be a great test whether Hall can finally cover, and if Huff makes a difference at FS.
I’m curious if Ryan will fare any better with his playcalling now that Kiff is gone, and Rob has the full influence of Davis behind him.
I think Cable will be a bit nervous.

Just one final word before i sink into blessed oblivion. For the Al Davis haters and backers alike:
The whole Raider identity, history, mystique, success and failure are the result of Al Davis. You cannot truly be a Raider fan and not acknowledge the debt that you owe Al Davis, and the bitter pill you swallow every day knowing that for at least the time being, you are linked to him at the hip until .. whenever. Raise your hand, extend your middle finger, and say “Up Yours, World!”

Some of yall are trippin. I know that we are frustrated, but I never turn on my boys. I am a Raider fan always have been and always will be. To hope or predict that the Raiders will lose is crazy. I think we are a good team, but young and need to learn to close games out. I liked Kiff, but he is no longer a Raider coach, so I hope he will never win again. I hope Cable wins all his games at the helm and solves that coaching problem. Support your boys.

October 11th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
There Raiders are gonna get it handed to them again (like on MNF Denver). First of all a groin injury is not 100% recovered. With that running style Fargus is going to re-injure the groin in the first quarter. He knows one style of running and that is straight forward. When he goes down it will be up to Michael Bush to carry the load. I do not know how committed to the run. If he plays Dmac, and if Darren is not 100% then he is just going to turn this turn toe injury into a season long nagging injury that is going to result in an extremely disappointing season for the #1 draft pick.
When the running game can’t get traction, we will get forced into a lot of passing. Lmac with have the ball slip out of his hand trying to make plays (because they do have some wicked pass rushers) and the
October 11th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
The Raiders need to start using Dmac like the Saints use Reggie Bush, throwing him a lot of passes out of the backfield. Thomas Howard needs to shadow Bush, JR needs to throw med to deep passes on the Saints to victimize the Saints reserve corner that will be forced to start in place of their injured rookie CB. Ryan needs to stay away from the prevent defense and be smart about his blitzes as Brees picks them up very well. Just win baby!

October 11th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Opps, I hit submit accidently:
Anyway, JMac will fumble the ball and turn the New Orleans crowd into a roaring lion. The crowd noise will result in several false starts, which will cause the Raiders offense to grind to a halt. The defense will where down because they are going to be on the field 43 minutes and the Saints will score 3 times in the forth quarter. They producer will cue the owner, with a blank stare in his luxury box and comment on the contributions Al has made to the NFL, and then to say: “this utter disintegration of this team in the second half has to have Al scratching his head”.
Rich Gannon, in his attempt to come off as a completely objective professional commentator, will be criticizing the Raiders for their meltdown defense and impotent offense. But he will explain that this is” Cable’s first HC game so that is to be expected but this team has a lot of talent and just has to gel.” The scoreboard will read Saints 35 Raiders 9.
What a waste of time and money. The die hards, who are probably getting stoned as I blog, will have a hangover tomorrow and will probably throw up on their way back to the hotel. They will mumbling to themselves: “Die, die, die, hurry up and die!”

I’m Here, what-d’yawant?
October 11th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
BHP, what are you thinking about tomorrow? I think we will be bolder, but I don’t know if that means a win.
October 11th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
If Sands, Warren and Kelly can get push in Brees’s face the game is ours. Not having DBurg hurts but Bresshas problems seeing over tall DT’s, he’s barely 6′ tall. They have no inside running game so it’s just a matter of closing down the off Tackle stuff and forcing Bush to cut it inside. The Saints defensive front seven is very stout. We have to be patient and wear them down. Our outside speed will give them a lot of trouble but we must click early on to be effective. They’re pass rush isn’t great but they play the run very well.
We can beat them if Russell can make some throws early and make a couple of throws late to beat them.
October 11th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
I am looking for the offense to finally establish an identity in the passing game. I know you have been calling for the deep pass, and I think we are going to see it tomorrow. I think it is invaluable as a young team in transition that we execute and convert some big passing plays. That will gain confidence in our new coach and our team.
I want to be optimistic, but I think it is a tall order to beat a good Saints team on the road after all the crap we have been through this year.
October 11th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Sure it’s a tall order but we should’ve beaten a better team than this one on the road if not for the coach going in the tank in the second half. Buffalo is a complete team the Saints are a passing team.
Buffalo has a good defense the Saints sell out to stop the run so team s can control the clock on them.
If we can run on them early and make some plays in the passing game we could win this game going away.
We also have a very good ST’s, so while it’s certainly not a slam dunk I can see how we could beat them. The problem with Kiffin he jut didn’t understand how to win games at this level and he just catse blame on everyne in stead of leaning on the experienced coaches to help him, maybe insecurity or something. But he spent way too much time looking for excuses when he had the team to do whatever he wanted. Big Al screwed up hiring that kid.
We could’ve won at least 3 or 4 more games last year with a more aggressive game plan. And you’ll see Cable benefit greatly from Kiffin’s mistakes.
This is a very good football team that simply needed leadership and now they have it.
October 11th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
post 61,shut up
October 11th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
You know what that is a good point and I have thought the same thing (Kiffins mistakes). Cable is starting with a clean slate and can use what Kiffin did as a blueprint.
1)Be aggressive for 4 quarters not 3
2)Use the passing game to our advantage and not be afarid of it.
3)Let our playmakers make plays (this was his achilles heel) and don’t play scared.
As a side note, whil I don’t think Fargas is an elite back or even a great back, but he is a hard nosed north/south back. I think if we had him in Buffalo and against S.D. we would have been able to grind out some first downs and possibly come away with some W’s.
October 11th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

October 12th, 2008 at 12:03 am
That’s a distinct possibility. But what’s more just continue to stay aggressive. We dominated a very good SD team for 3.5 qrtrs and just stopped playing.
We must make teams respect our offense and attack. Everyone says we don’t have WR’s and that may well be the case but how do you know for sure when we never use them. JLH is a very dangerous WR but Kiffin refused to use him. Walker starts games off with catches and they never come back to him. Go figure! We have playmakers IMO but we never use them this offense could take off if they just use the playmakers wisely.
I’mnot talking about deep passing I’m taliing about smart passes to open up the offense so we’re nt so predictable. Fore the defense to respect all our ability instead of being so cautious you cripple it.
October 12th, 2008 at 12:04 am

October 12th, 2008 at 12:11 am
When I saw J walker open up the game with 2 passes I said, allright it’s on, and we never went back to it. that was bush league. We can all see that as fans. Kiffin had a lot of potential, but was in over his haed. And instead of using his resources he cried like a little girl. I am 33 like him, and I can see how it could be intimidating, but he should have manned up and owned it and used every resource, admitted his lack of experience and gone from there. Instead he left us like a bi**h. I hope Cable can crank this up a notch. Let’s do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The good thing is Cable and Knapp have been here he entire time, they know Russell. They have broken him dow and know what he does well. From that standpoint we are lucky that Mr Davis took his time and these guy’s were on board before pulling the plug.
Now it’s all about execution, making plays and finishing games. These players know they should have a better record so we’ll see what happens tomorrow.
No excuses, play the damn game to win. And I think they will win.

As long as JR keeps throwing off his back foot or hopping prior to releasing the effing ball they need to keep handing it off. Until those problems are fixed his passes will continue to sail and the outcome will continue to suck. There is a reason Chas only has a couple of receptions, and his name is JR.

yeah the water trick, you pulled, my mum taught me that one too, when she realized me and my buddies were drinking, even if she had said no.. =) you said it just means you have to go to the ‘head’ more often.. problem is i have the tiny’est bladder so i might as well stay at the ‘head’ when I’m drinking =)
before going to bed I drink a Liter of water, so my system have some fluid to work with, when i purify my body =)

Wow! My Red Raiders pulled out a squeaker. I almost had a stroke watching that game.
I’m partial to Big XII football, in case you hadn’t noticed.

on my 3rd big fosters 408 gonna watch game at bar;talk 2 you all l8ter!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 8:58 am
With the Saints having a new kicker this week, I think our D needs to be prepared for the fact the Saints might be inclined to go for fourth downs rather than 45+ yard FG attempts.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:04 am
4eva loves them Fosters… Have a blast bro..
Come on Defense we need to bring the heat! Deangelo needs to step up.. I dont think I can take seeing him get raped all day
October 12th, 2008 at 9:04 am
Update:
Marques Colston is inactive Sunday against the Raiders.
This is shocking, as all signs pointed to him playing in the game after Colston returned to Wednesday’s practice and continued to work throughout the week. “The Saints probably think they can beat Oakland without risking Colston having a setback”. Lance Moore and Devery Henderson will start outside. Moore is a strong fantasy play, as Henderson will likely be covered by Nnamdi Asomugha with DeAngelo Hall on Moore.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Morning 408. Who you playing today?
October 12th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Good day NATION.
Bloodymary time.
Here is a toast, to 1-0. clink
Cheers
Go Raiders.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Morning Raider Might… I went with Cutler but my gut says I shoulda started McNabb.. What do you think?
October 12th, 2008 at 9:12 am
The “Professional Liar” Mort just said on bspn, that Colston is out for the Ain’ts.
Watch, dude will torch MeAngelo for two TDs.
Back in a few, stuff to get done before kick off.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:13 am
I need a TE Vernon Davis is killing..
October 12th, 2008 at 9:15 am
That’s a tough call. I like both. Cutler will be without Royal since it doesn’t look like he will be playing.
McNabb is without Westbrook, so maybe that will force them to throw more than usual. He’s also without Reggie Brown.
I don’t have both, so I am just playing Cutler mainly cus i don’t have anyone better.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Well, Tony Gonzales is my TE, but he hasn’t been doing much all year. Maybe if he is traded he will be worth something.
I just have some nobody playing for him today because of the bye.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:17 am
TE’s are so weak this year that I am playing in one of my leagues without a TE for this week because I don’t want to dump Tony and I don’t want to drop another of my players for a small points TE. I’m screwed either way. lol
October 12th, 2008 at 9:20 am
408..
yeah she was, well she was something between a real doctor and a nurse.. so she knew that stuff =)
October 12th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Just to warn you guys, apparently i’m not a raider fan=) just so you know..
a post from another blog..
—”You are not a Raider fan. I wish you would come over here and actually come to a game. Let me know when you do, I’ll get the Nation ready to tear you apart.
LMN = #1 Raider hater
No Raiders fan would consider you a brother or a part of the Raider Nation. And 99% of us would never consider you to be loyal.”—
October 12th, 2008 at 9:22 am
I went with Mcnabb last week and the dude had 0 td’s.. So Im staying with cutler.. McNabb is probably gonna throw 4 TD’s this week.. I flipped a coin. Im only in 1 league Im a noob @ this FF thing but It makes sunday a lil more interesting..I guess MR was right I am a nerd.. =)
October 12th, 2008 at 9:25 am
4got my bowl;we knew it was garbage LMN l8ter=)
October 12th, 2008 at 9:25 am

October 12th, 2008 at 9:25 am
LMN
that guy is a tool! I wish you would come to a game so I could teach you how yo tailgate.. He must not be able to deal with the realist that is LMN!!
October 12th, 2008 at 9:26 am
408 go with Cutler.
Scott Pianowski : Cutler against a Jacksonville secondary that’s struggling, and a defense that can’t get to the pocket with a road map. Everyone throws on the Jags - a slumping Schaub did, a hurt Roethlisberger did (that Big Ben performance didn’t get enough pub, it was truly legendary). Cutler will get multiple TDs today, book it.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:28 am
Later 4eva
Be safe No drinking and driving ya dig!
October 12th, 2008 at 9:31 am
LMN - A fan, aficionado or supporter is someone who has an intense, occasionally overwhelming liking of a sporting club, person, group of persons, company, product, work of art, idea, or trend. Fans of a particular thing constitute its fanbase or fandom. They may start a fan club, hold fan conventions, create fanzines, write fan mail, or engage in similar activities.
- I don’t see anything in that definition that says you need to go to a game.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:39 am
F Warren Sapp!! And F Tom Jackson from BSPN!!

This place is dead but I am here and the Raiders will bring their A game all long today.
Brees is gonna wish he had joined the Army or been a doctor or a post office worker after the Raider D pouds the Purdue dwarf into the dirt.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:46 am
LMN,
I have been reading this blog for 3+ years now. I must say that you are one of the few sane people that actually write about football. (Even though european football doesn’t count - lol) Whoever wrote that is a moron.
October 12th, 2008 at 9:51 am
The game is on CBS here in Tumbleweed Arizona!!
After the game I drive to Vegas for dinner at mom and dads and I am gonna bet 20 bucks on the Raiders to beat the New Jersey pissants straight up next week.
Raiders will intercept Brett three times just like they do to not so breezy today.
Woohoo!!! Life doesnt get any better.
October 12th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
WTF Jmac??????????????
October 12th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

October 12th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Brees-26-30 330yards
October 12th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Jmac 13-39 159yards
October 15th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Why don’t they play Watkins, he’s another speedster, do people forget about that, he played with Reggie Bush in high school and and is faster than bush, why not change it up and give him a chance, he is a big play guy, as well as being an inside route guy, seriously raiders, play this guy!
