First quarter: Raiders 3, Saints 0
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, October 12th, 2008 at 10:32 am in Oakland Raiders.
Scoring
Oak–Sebastian Janikowski 24-yard field goal, 13:20
Notes:
– The Raiders faced a third-and-14 from their own 45 after a false start penalty on Zach Miller on third-and-9.
Wide receiver Ronald Curry appears to have come alive, catching his third pass of the quarter and his second third-down conversion with an 8-yard reception on third-and-2.
– Jamal Brown was flagged twice for holding and Tyler Mehelhaff missed his first field goal attempt from 31 yards out as the Saints failed to score on their second drive.
Brees was 5-for-5 for 82 yards on the drive, and demonstrated why blitzing him is risky business when Gibril Wilson flew in from the left side and Brees dumped a screen to Mark Campbell for a 29-yard gain.
– Johnnie Lee Higgins’ 35-yard punt return to his right set the Raiders up at the New Orleans 39 on their first posession, and two connenctions from Russell to Curry _ a 13-yard pass to the sideline and an 11-yard strike to the 10 on third-and-8 _ got the Raiders close.
They continued to be unable to punch it in. Fargas gained four tough yards to the 6, then Russell twice threw incomplete. Scott Shanle hit Miller as Russell’s pass arrived on second down, and a third-down pass to Higgins in the end zone was deflected and nearly intercepted by Roman Harper.
Harper dropped the gift interception, with Janikowski coming in to kick the field goal.
– Wilson was responsible for giving the Saints a three-and-out on their first possession, stopping Bush after a 5-yard run, dumping Bush for a 3-yard loss on a sweep, and then upending Mark Campbell on what appeared to be a perfectly set-up screen after a 6-yard gain.

October 12th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Lechler really is the best punter in the NFL
October 12th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Phone call from Al Davis
Paging Coach Cable
Throw it long!
By the way Tom, Randy would have caught that ball.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:36 am
nice punt by Shane. Step it up D
October 12th, 2008 at 10:36 am
The Saints are without Colston, Patten and Shockey on offense. They are without with Sedrick Ellis on defense. The injuries alone should hand us a victory. The Raiders need to capitalize on this.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Stuffed the box, knowing the run was coming and didnt come close to stopping them.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Brees is spreading our man to man defense all over the field and hes taking advantage of it. Payton is a good coach.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Mom #4… good one..lol
October 12th, 2008 at 10:38 am

October 12th, 2008 at 10:40 am
dhall made a tackle!?!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Drew Brees is Rich Gannon. Ball Control.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Twenty minutes in and the Saints already have 125 yards. I hope this is a “bend but don’t break” day for the Raiders defense.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:41 am
This is the defenses problem. Can’t get off the field on 3rd down!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Step it up D
October 12th, 2008 at 10:42 am
10 of 10?
Even I am about to give up on our pass defense being one of the greatest ever.
They get carved up like turkey in Maddens motorcoach.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:43 am
We look soft on defense. I guess they are allowed to eat cup cakes and donuts again.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:44 am
alright fellas. Tighten up…tighten up…
October 12th, 2008 at 10:44 am
LOL Huff. I smell something bad coming right now!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:44 am
I knew I should have started McAllister today.
I just didn’t have the heart to start Brees and McAllister against the Raiders.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Pathetic.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:45 am
I think my 3 year old niece is faster than Ricky Brown.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:45 am
they have ran a variation of that play 3 times now
October 12th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Man, there may not even be a Raider offensive drive this quarter. LOL
October 12th, 2008 at 10:46 am

This from PFT by Mike Florio:
RAIDERS SHOPPING FARGAS, BUSH
Posted by Mike Florio on October 12, 2008, 12:59 p.m.
Charley Casserly of CBS reports that the Oakland Raiders are willing to trade either Justin Fargas or Michael Bush.
With Darren McFadden proving to be a legitimate NFL player, the Raiders don’t need three tailbacks.
Casserly says that Bush is the more likely to be moved.
Bush and Fargas are both under contract through 2010. Fargas has higher base salaries, given that he has been in the league for more years. Bush is in his second season. He was considered to have first-round talent until he suffered a broken leg in the first game of his senior season at Louisville.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:47 am
And because our defense can’t stop the Saints…injuries will start to happen. Oh wait…the bad defense is Kiffin’s fault. What was I thinking. Conservative playcalling is what put the defense on the field too long.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:48 am
like a hot knife through butter!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:50 am
At halftime…sprinkles will be added to the defense to add a spark.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:50 am
Stupid azz Raiders!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:50 am
offsides…aarrgghhhhh
October 12th, 2008 at 10:50 am
Sprinkles will be added to the donuts for the defense that is.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:50 am
it’s over
October 12th, 2008 at 10:50 am
Damn that offsides hurts…
October 12th, 2008 at 10:50 am
This defense is G@Y.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Dam it!!! too easy
October 12th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Penalties will kill a team.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Maybe now we can have Jamarcus Russell throw 3 deep passes in a row to attempt to bring back 70’s football.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:52 am
morrison and Howard had more contact with each other then they did with bush
October 12th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Were losing
October 12th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Offense needs to get a drive going, or the D will be spent…
That offsides killed us there.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:53 am
what was Rob Ryan doing the last two weeks?
October 12th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Well like always The Raiders get there 3pts
October 12th, 2008 at 10:53 am
and the rout is on!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:54 am
40 yard line!!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:54 am
run the damn ball! Were a running team!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:55 am
D will get 3min to rest
October 12th, 2008 at 10:55 am
We were a running team. That is untiol the pundits drove Kiffin out!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:55 am
defense is going to get tired time of possesion so far 18 min. NO 6 Raiders. Yea keep passing
October 12th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Got a break. Good field position. Now take advantage of it Knapp…
October 12th, 2008 at 10:56 am
What happened to pressuring the QB like the buffalo and SD games?
October 12th, 2008 at 10:56 am
can they atleast show Kim Kardashian on a split screen everytime they show Bush? I’m tired of looking at him already!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Same damn team, Same damn channel!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Holy crap, look at the time of possession difference. The Saints have almost a 3-to-1 advantage.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Have you all notice Cables record with Idahoo?
October 12th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Go big man, go
October 12th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Good run Russel
October 12th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Maryland, the Saints have one of the best pass-blocking lines in the league. So, it’s really no surprise that we aren’t getting to Brees. Nobody gets to him.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Time OUt
October 12th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I like the time out. 1st good thing I have seen!
October 12th, 2008 at 10:59 am
commercial are good too
October 12th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Good timeout, trying to preserve our defense.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:00 am
let see another score before half time
October 12th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Matt Ryan looks for confident than Russell.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:01 am
keep throwing and interseptions will mount NO’s just missed 2 or 3 already
October 12th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Idaho, went from D2 to D1 when Cable was coach.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:02 am
granted saints pass block well and burgess is out for who knows how long but if we don’t pressure brees some how the d will be gassed well before the last 3 min of the 4th q!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Russell has to throw the ball to learn how to be a QB in the NFL.
You guys that think the Raiders should put up 400 yards of offense are crazy.
At least Knapp has Russell in a position to learn instead of handing off every play.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:02 am
I miss those Payton Manning commercials! What happened to them?
October 12th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Jerry you don’t improvise on a called screen play when you get caught blitzing, it was a good call for NO and a bad call by Ryan, simple as that.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Way to go Jani
October 12th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Wow. We should have went for a 76 yard field goal. It would have had the same result.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Not even close. WTF is up with these LONG FGs!?
October 12th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Can’t stop the run now…put Rob Ryans fat arse in at DT!!!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:05 am
J. Russell 4/11 39 yds.
Yeah. Looking really sharp.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Kiffin kept our team in the game with his playcalling until the defense would lose it for us in the 4th quarter. We can’t even get to the 4th quarter without losing at this point. Thats the big difference.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:06 am
jano is kicking in a dome and he still managed to hook the ball! argh!!!!!!!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:06 am
now RR’s (Al’s)defense will allow NO’s to score. to many passes stop the clock and the defense needs more sugar
October 12th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Gret. Short field for the Aints. Just whatwe needed. 5-1 odds that we get the prevent!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I smell a troll.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Should have punted, to much time left to try a FG from that distance.
More of Robbo’s limp D, spells t-r-o-u-b-l-e

October 12th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Bang Bang Bang! Game over
October 12th, 2008 at 11:08 am
We are only rushing three again. Kiffin’s firing sure helped the defense.
By the way JRuss missed a few throws that could have led to scores. Miller at the goal line on the first drive and a couple more since then.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:08 am
new play caller,new head coach,same def. cord.=same results-lose.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Well Looks Like I Won’t Have To Buy Those Steak Dinners
October 12th, 2008 at 11:08 am
kiffen spoke the truth about Rob Ryan Al you pathetic old man
October 12th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Damn we need a sack or something to give the D some sort of momentum going into halftime…
October 12th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Nice zone defense, shades of Kiffin? Get back in a zone cover 2 and watch them score.

October 12th, 2008 at 11:09 am
AL, YOU IDIOT, YOU FIRED THE WRONG GUY! ROB RYAN HAS DESTROYED OUR TEAM FOR 5 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Who is looking alot better? it can not be the defense that is getting carved up in the last one min of the first half– i pray that can hold them to 3pts!!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:09 am
That is not BHP.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:10 am
brees is pickin us apart. Me Angelo got stiff armed by a midget
October 12th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Rob Ryan is mad because he suked all that Al Davis D!ck for nothing. He was promised the Head Coaching job.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Huff24 … please shut your pie hole. Kiff couldnt even get a 3rd to save his job….at least we are converting 3rd downs today. what a dumb fan you are.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:10 am
alston wow
October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
how many times have we seen Deangelo complain to a red after every play he is involved in?
October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
alston was the only LB that could stay with bussh in college.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
we’ve been rushing 5 guys…that’s not prevent
October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Yea good flag
October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
we need a rod woodson like play to turn around the season
October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
LOL! That was a messed up play.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
good D!!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
our offense is on fire now that kiff is gone he was definatly the problem. not Ryans defence
October 12th, 2008 at 11:12 am
…..LOL
October 12th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Did he run bush down at USC
October 12th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Rob Ryan is an idiot. Lets not blitz Brees we can just give him all day to pick us apart. Our D-Line can’t get any pressure. I know let fire Ryan and we can replace him with Kiffin
October 12th, 2008 at 11:12 am
we have a minute
October 12th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Ryan is garbage. Cable already making poor decisions.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:12 am
wow, so is Al going to question Cable about that FG at the airport tonight? I miss Kiffin already, hope you Al goons are enjoying this. I can’t wait for the Rob Ryan press conference this week.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Just get into the half!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:13 am

October 12th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Alisgod - Kiffin had this team leading almost every game by the 4th quarter REGARDLESS of the 3rd down issues so obviously the 3rd down issue hasn’t helped us today. Whats your point?
October 12th, 2008 at 11:15 am
We should just call that play over and over and over to JLH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Kiffin would have never called thta pass play.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:16 am
post 140…yes while at Stanford he was the only LB that ran down Bush…kiff remembered that and picked him up when he was cut by the Lambs. That is the guy we should stick on bush all day today.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:16 am
interseption soon
October 12th, 2008 at 11:16 am
He just got a fastball to the nutts!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:16 am
JR almost throws a pick on every play but Kiffin was wrong about the passing game.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Harper got hit in the nuts!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:17 am

October 12th, 2008 at 11:17 am
our defense is kicking ass? I have to admire u going down with the ship.
NO is doing whatever they want. look at TOP. We all know our DTs are going to be gassed in the 2nd half.
NO gets the ball first and will run another 8 min off th clock.
still blaming the O with your boy cable in there for not hlping the d?
October 12th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Great playcalling and execution. they better kick OOB
October 12th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Penalties will kill a team..
October 12th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Great play calling. 3rd and 20 from the 50, only 20 seconds left, and you throw a short pass in the flat. Great play calling.

Huff…this shows how much you dont know about football. In each of those games we had a lead, it was because OUR DEFENSE gave us the LEAD. The D gave up on ly 7 points in the first half since the Denver game and not counting today’s game. You only look at the score and you LACK the capacity to analyze any idea of how the game is won and lost.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:19 am
I told you 3plays and a Hail Mary
October 12th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Janikowski quit this team the day Kiffin was let go.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:19 am
who’s kiffin???…get over it he’s gone
October 12th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Janiporkski can’t hit these FGs.
The offensive pass interference killed the chance for a score.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:19 am
still time for NO’s to score
October 12th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Is Kiffin still calling the plays??? Long FG’s??? Supposed to be long passes right?
October 12th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Are you FK’n kidding me ?????
TRADE FARGAS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice job JANO! POS!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:20 am
We’re playing the number 1 offense in the league today and we are lucky the score is this close.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Thank God they didnt get another play
October 12th, 2008 at 11:21 am
AlisGod, no we aren’t lucky. Saints are just playing with us. Kinda rude of them to play with their food.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Well we do get the ball, to open the 3rd
October 12th, 2008 at 11:21 am
ROB RYAN HAS CHANGED AL’A DIAPER FOR 5 YEARS NOW..HE’S JUST MAD NOW BECAUSE HE DID ALL THAT FOR NOTHING…THE DAMN O-LINE COACH GOT THE JOB!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Chip shot huh BHP ?
Pull your head out. I been saying Jano sucks and he does. And so do you by the way…
October 12th, 2008 at 11:22 am
There is a reason Kiffin threw so little. Russell is still learning and not ready to throw 35 passes a game. he nearly had four picks.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:22 am
brees is connecting on passes against coverage with the linebackers and if they had one more second they would put more points on the board!. If the idiot ryan doesn’t may any adjustments in the 2nd half, we all will see a repeat of the denver game!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Russell would still be learning at this time next year if Kiffin were still here.

I have Been a fan since the Madden days and I will always be. But This attitude I have about the team is the same attitude the players have when their playing.
5years without a decent record so me some results and I won’t be so damn critical
October 12th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Alisgod - The offense also kept the defense off the field with their running game. Our offense would get into a red zone territory often but they weren’t able to get TD’s so they would settle for field goals. With that being said, we controlled the clock and we put points on the board. We weren’t perfect along the stretch but we helped keep the defense off the field and they were more effective because of it. With us passing the ball and having alot of incompletions, too much time is being left on the clock and the defense isn’t getting enough of a rest.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:23 am
I assure all of you that with Knapp calling the plays we will see many picks from Russell.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:23 am
we need tds,not fgs. right Oak.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:24 am
The defense still sucks I dont care how close the score is.
Fargas is taking reps away from Dmac & Bush and Fargas is a complete piece of garbage.
Russell cant hit an open receiver to save his life.
Cable sucks.
Ryan has always sucked.
Davis has lost his mind.
OakGlenn is a boob.
BHP is a ding a ling.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:25 am

October 12th, 2008 at 11:25 am

Post 186, the saints are playing the same offense that Gannon had in 2002 under Callahan. They play clock control so long as Brees dont get any pressure. This season brees is in cruise control and he is playing lights out. We are VERY LUCKY the score is this close. The Saints as they have been all season lacks the attention to little things to put it all together. Just glad the score is still within reach and we get the ball back in the 2nd half.

The Saints are lucky the Raiders don’t have 10 points.

Janikowski’s a good kicker, but he’s not Superman. I can see a try like that if it’s the last or next-to-last play of a half, but with two minutes to go? Kind of amazing we’re only down 7. Lucky.

Oh yeah, Al fired the right coach! They just walked down the d field. Hall is not worth the paper his bonus was printed on!–only one play from him the whole time!!!!! Not only the d looks tired but confused. NO is now doing what other teams have done, going no huddle, quick snap counts– that’s not all the player but the coach ie RYAN!! This is pathetic, i can only hope they don’t score 40 points on us!!!
