Cable’s first post-mortem

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, October 13th, 2008 at 4:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Missed the open locker room session while returning from New Orleans, but got back in time to see Tom Cable’s first Monday press briefing doing what every other Raiders coach has had to do all too often since 2003 _ answer questions about another difficult loss.

Some quick hits:

– The second diagnosis defensive end Derrick Burgess received confirmed the original one, Cable said. He’s got a strained triceps and is day-to-day _ which means it isn’t long term but there’s no guarantee he’ll be chasing Brett Favre Sunday at the Coliseum.

– Cable rejected reports from CBS insider Charley Casserly that the club was shopping running backs Justin Fargas and Michael Bush before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

“I don’t believe that’s accurate in any way,” Cable said. “I know the trade deadline is coming up, certainly, and we’ll listen to anybody. But those are names at least I had not heard of.”

If either man were to be dealt, it sounds as if it would be a surprise to Cable.

“No one would be doing that, I don’t think,” Cable said. “Those are two really good players on this football team.”

– Raiders linemen have noted Cable’s penchant for straight talk, and that’s apparently what the entire squad got Monday.

“You are who you are. So today they got the truth. We got our tails kicked. We didn’t get it done. We didn’t complete enough balls, we didn’t hit enough big plays and we missed three opportunities in the kicking game for touchdowns on our kickoff return team,” Cable said. “Defensively we became the nail, not the hammer. You tell em the truth. It doesn’t mean you think any less of them. It doesn’t mean they’re not what you believe them to be and that’s good professional football players.

“I just kept on doing and that and they’ll always hear that from me. I don’t like the gray and I won’t go gray so they’re going to get it how I see it. And you’ve got to understand when we start winning here, this weekend when we beat the Jets it’s going to be the same way in a positive sense. I’m going to ber high-fiving them and yucking it up and telling them this is what you did, this how you did it and this is why it happened. So I don’t think there can be any gray area. And it’s got to be all the time, get right to the heart of the issue.”

– Interesting that Cable conceded Sunday was the first time he had gotten a good look at the offense as a whole because he was focused on his own position group “at the end of the field with a bunch of 300-pound guys.”

His mission now is to attempt to refine what Russell does well and concentrate on those things, rather than empty the playbook.

“We certainly put him in a lot of situations, moving him around, move the pocket, three steps, five-, seven-steps and play-action, and really kind of ran the gamut with him,” Cable said. “And I think we really found out a lot about where he is. And it’s obvious he’s still in a stage of development. It’s obvious maybe he can’t handle that much. But it doesn’t change the fact that we need to continue to throw the football and continue to find ways to get completions and throw the ball down the field.”

Later, Cable said, “I think you come to the conclusion about what you think he’s good at, what he’s comfortable doing, and you go for it. You can make the concept look three or four different ways with personnel groups and formations.”

– Cable refused to put a sad face on Russell’s 13-for-35, 159-yard, one interception bottom line.

“I don’t think it was a setback . . . for that guy in his development, and where we all want him to be as an organization, I think it was a tremendous lesson,” Cable said. “I think he’s going take this thing and grow a mile and a half from what happened yesterday. And maybe that sounds funny, but you’ve got to remember, before you can ever learn anything, before you can succeed at anything, you’ve got to fail. And certainly we failed yesterday as a football team. We all have to learn from it, coaches and players, but specifically as it pertains to him, he will learn from it. I think he already has. We’ve had some good discussion already.”

– Cynical aside _ if all the failing the Raiders have been doing since 2003 has been steeling themselves for success, we should be in for something special soon.

– The tally on dropped passes by the coaching staff was eight, Cable said. That figure seems a little high, and probably includes errant throws potential receivers managed to get a hand on. Curry had one drop which he short-armed over the middle on a pass where Russell led him directly into a potentially devastating hit.

Darren McFadden had a drop over the middle, even the sure-handed Zach Miller dropped a pass.

Cable hinted there could be a shakeup at wide receiver, with starters Curry and Javon Walker combining for just 11 catches.

“Specifically who and all that I don’t know that I’m ready to speak on that yet,” Cable said. “But I do know this. We’ve got to catch the ball when it’s thrown to us and we’ve got to run the right routes that we’re supposed to and be where we need to be on time.

“That’s the beauty of the passing game some people really don’t get. First you’ve got to protect it and then you’ve got to run the right routes at the right depth on time in the right places. You’ve got to read route conversions versus man and zone and your quarterback’s got to go bang, bang, bang, and that’s all got to happen in 2.8 seconds. So we’re not there yet. We’re taking about three and a half seconds. So we’ll get it.”

– Another cynical aside _ how many passes must Todd Watkins be dropping at practice to not get a chance?

– McFadden’s right turf toe has improved to the point where Cable said he didn’ t have his protective boot on Monday. He is hoping McFadden will practice Wednesday and said the injury has slowed the Raiders ability to give McFadden more of a role in the passing game and with the “Wildcat” formation.

– Cable is either overcome with runaway optimism or will wind up being exactly what the Raiders need to get going.

“We’re going to go into this week and we’re not going to feel real good about things,” Cable said. “We’re going to be disappointed obviously in what happened yesterday but we also have an opportunity to change that. We also have the opportunity to do something about it.

“That’s what we just got done talking about, is that this is a good football team. You guys can argue with me and write whatever you want to write but I’m telling you, I’m standing by them. We’re a good football team and we’re gonna get it right.”

– Cable had no issues with Greg Knapp’s offensive play-calling or what Ryan did on defense, although he plans to deal with defense more against the Jets than he did against the Saints.

“I’m going to be more active (on defense) on game day,” Cable said. “I really took yesterday for the first time and just listened and tried to see how the dynamics of that group, how they work and all that. They do some really good things and there’s some things I think I can help them with so we’ll do that.”

What amazes me is that people are actually gonna go to the game. Why waste gas to go see a team this bad who shows no heart, emotion or an ounce of concern about this season. It appears as if the spirit of the team left at the same time Kiffin left and I just cant see anything positve coming out of this season. If I was on this team I would be on my knees praying to GOD that the Raiders trade me by Tuesday’s deadline. I get a headache every time I think about the way this franchise has been run right into the ground. Maybe one day Al will finally realize that when you continue to do stupid things, you will continue to get stupid results. Poor Jamarcus,, come this offseason he will be going through his 3rd coach in less than 1 year. How can anyone succeed under those circumstances.

I was kind of bummed when the Broncos lost but I soon found out that not only did you girlz get blown out but the cowgirlz lost to the Cardinals as well so it made my day a little better. Sure doesn’t look like Cable is going to be the savior you girlz were hoping he was going to be. I think Kiffen could have turned your crummy little live around eventually but now you ladies have to start all over again this year with uncable and then start all over again next year with your new HC Al Davis. Sad for you ladiez thet the Chargers won. Bet if the Niners would have pulled out a victory over the Eagles a number of you ladiez would have jumped off the Golden Gate last night. Enjoy your week and try not to think of the masacre next week against Brett and the Jets.

  85. saintkaufman Says:

    Fine article Jerry. Thank you.

I got home early today and put the game on and watched both offenses. Man, Brees has got the timing down. He is into his wind up as the receivers are breaking and that’s at the latest. We just ran into a buzz saw yesterday. They would run their 8 yard route, break and turn and the ball was there.
Conversely, our WR’s would break, turn and slow up because Russell was clearly indecisive about where to go. Then he started forcing throws and almost gave up 5-6 picks. Cables right, he’ll get there. Lane has him going in the right direction but he had to know that there was an issue with accuracy and indecision.
Stick to the run, throw in some dump passes and the occasional roll outs where Russell can see the whole field and hope someone breaks free. Ah crap, what do I know??

    WE NEED SPEED!!!!

Russia, is helluva team, their coach is Dutch, play the same style soccer as we do and as the dutch.. LOL of course =) Finland is just a bit worse than Denmark so I don’t see them have a chance..

  88. K-Rock Says:

For those of you comparing how Big Ben was handled with how Russell is being used…

2004 Ben had 295 attempts in 14 games. That is 22 attempts per game.

Russell is on pace to average 25-26 attempts per game.

That is only 3 to 4 attempts per game more than Ben in his first year.

Ben played only 12 games in 2005 and his attempts per game average was still 22, but in 2006 he threw 469 passes in 15 games for a 31 attempts per game average.

So things opened up for him in his 3rd year.

Even though Russell was not the full time starter last year, he was still on the team.

Having him throw 25 passes a game is not too much for a 2nd year QB.

Cable doesn’t get it. No matter what he does, nothing will change. He’s a temporary employee. He has NO POWER to hire/fire, play or sit players, call out underachievers & malcontents, or anything else of importance that real head coaches can do. Everybody there knows who’s running the show - it’s crazy Uncle Al, the first & last ruler of the Raider kingdom.

The players know that everybody is marching in-place right now, awaiting the next beheading.

If your a player and don’t like what the HC says, go talk to King Al & complain. He’ll be happy to de-ball whomever is causing you concern. Unhappy with extended practices? That’s ok, King Al will see that they end on time whether you get it right or not. Tired of seeing those slogans like “I’m in”? No problem, one of King Al’s eunuchs will be happy to have them removed. As long as you have a price and are able to kiss the king’s a$$, you are part of the In Crowd. The kingdom is concerned about one issue only and that is the king. Tom Cable is just the latest court jester. As long as he amuses the king and doesn’t point at the king and say look, he wears no clothes, he’ll last the year out. After that, Cable will be on his way to Seattle so he really doesn’t care either. Nobody except the fans really care any longer. Sure, they go through the moves but when all is said and done only one fact holds true, it’s good to be the king.

  97. Sea of Hands Says:

K-Rock while your stats are right on, the only reason Russell has had the pass attempts that he has is he had 35 and 37 pass attempts the last two games. In the games against KC and Buffalo he had 17 and 19. This is a good thing that they are letting him “play” a little more, altho that is not going to come without pain. It is very disconcerting that the receivers are not running the right routes. We are over a month into the season, with an entire preseason. You would think guys would know the pass patterns by now.

Sorry to tell you absolutely NOT. Al’s limited partnership, A.D. Football, Inc. maintains 100% operational control over the Raider organization. The recent 20% interest sold to some venture capitalists last year is for profit sharing only. I’ve heard that the contract that AD has is ironclad tight and no one can unseat him for any reason. He could be in the grave and the corporation A.D. Football Inc. would still have 100% control.

KRock 88, dont count yesterday’s pass attempts. The score forced the gameplan to go the passing game in the 2nd half anyways.

Brees is on pace to break Marino’s record. The Saints reminds me of the 2002 Raider O. They both have low sacks tally, a dink and dunk O, and a QB on fire.

  103. WESTRAIDER Says:

we should sit j russ like the cards sat matt l let walters play ole russ is scared back there

  104. Sea of Hands Says:

NY Giant fan was ready to throw Eli under the subway. And look what happened. Only loser turds would give up on a QB of Jamarcus’ stature after 6 starts.

  105. winston_wolf Says:

thanks for the insight JB. that al sure is a sneaky bastard listing the raiders under his corp. so barring a sale of his corporations stake your telling me there is no way to end the rule of the davis lineage!?!

once again…someone get Mark Cuban and tell him to call Bill Gates we need some cheese to bring the rat out of the hole!

  106. K-Rock Says:

Brandon Jacobs reminds me of Tyrone Wheatley

  107. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Hell Raiders..

yeah, U21 is like College compared to NFL, its upcoming talents or the high prized young ones, but isn’t good enough to start on the National team, we have a starter on our National team he was injured the last game, so this game he would be eligible, but his injury didn’t go away in time.. you could call it a team of rookies (the term Rookie isn’t wildly used here)

Our U21 plays against Serbia, they won the first leg with 1-0 so we need to play a good game, and its an away game :/

  108. R.A.W. Says:

About Huff, Remeber, he’s more of a cover guy than the actual FS stuff. Huff is sort of like a man to man corner, except in the SS position. When moved to the FS position, It’s a bit difficult cuz you hav to watch anyone who goes deep rather than one guy. Believe me, though it seems CB is harder to play, FS is just as hard with a bigger resposibility.

About Russell. The reason why we drafted Russell was cuz of his arm strength, not intelligence. He’s smart, but inexperienced. Also, as bad as Russells peformance was yesterday, we also have to look at his supporting cast. I would say Russell would be near where Matt Ryan is now if he had at least one good reciever (Matt Ryan has Rodney White, Javon Walker isn’t playing good at all)

  109. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Hell Raiders..

U21 games are much harder to predict, because you don’t know all the players, the other teams are full of unknowns, and at that level anything can happen =)

one of the best U21 games ever, was between Russia and Denmark, in Denmark, we won and the russians went basserk, never seen anything like it, it mostly reminded me of a hockey game =)

  110. Sea of Hands Says:

Huff had a worse game than Russell did yesterday. Throw Lelie, Howard, Zack Miller, K. Edwards, in that same bad game mix and you have what happened yesterday.

  111. La Milicia Negra Says:

Hell Raiders, right now the real National teams play qualification to the World Cup.. we played our last game of this half season saturday, our next National team game that counts is in April :/

But we lead our group =) so its a good intermission =)

  112. JB Says:

“someone get Mark Cuban and tell him to call Bill Gates we need some cheese to bring the rat out of the hole”!
    ****************************************************
It’s not about money. It’s all about Al’s ego. He needs to prove that his way is tghe correct way and everybody else is wrong. After all, he is an NFL Hall of Fame member. Obviously selected due to his ability to create winning dynasties. Problem is that he’s now 25-30 years behind the curve. He can’t accept that he’s still not the dominant king. He’ll do it his way and prove he’s right no matter what. No matter who gets run over in the process. No matter what the fans think. After all, who the hell are they to question the king?

Al Davis was great at one point in time. Unfortunately that was 30 years ago. Now he’s just a delusional old geezer who’s continuing to screw-up what heretofore was a great NFL franchise. Now were just an everyday laughing stock wannabe.

  113. Scott Says:

Is Al Davis dead yet? Because we won’t start winning until he kicks off.

  114. La Milicia Negra Says:

NATION, that was it =) if there doesn’t come a follow-up question, thats it =)

  115. La Milicia Negra Says:

ohh, that reminds me, is there any anaheim duck fans here?

  116. willie Says:

Anyone have a clue what the Raiders are doing at halftime, via adjustments?I dont see It!Its not Kiffin,Cable,Davis, not sure about Ryan, the players!

  117. severeraider-Brothers United Says:

After yesterday I have nothing to say about this teams performance.

Did anyone see that Arizona game. Their passing attack is quite impressive, and Fitzgerald is a beast. Just think that we could have had him or Roy Williams. We also passed on CJ when I really wanted to get him and Trent Edwards or Drew Stanton in the 3rd. Imagine having Calvin Johnson, Trent Edwards, and Darren Mcfadden on the field together, that combination would rival Brees, Bush, and Colston.

  118. radraider Says:

why dosent anyone see the positives on this game. as our head couch said in his press conference we made an improvement in our pass attempts. also now we know why the chargers got rid of Lofton.

  119. Caribou Barbie Says:

Well, now we’re the underdog instead of the favorite.

But no worries, we’ll win the trophy again this year.

Keep up the good work Al. Just win baby.

  120. severeraider-Brothers United Says:

I played FS and while corner is more physically demanding, FS is more difficult. U have to have really good instincts and react with no hesitation. If u think for just a millisecond u get Devery’d like Huff did. I still think that he will be a good player, but it is obvious that chnaging positions has put a bump in the road. He also is not putting enough time in his studying and film sessions. If he puts in the work he can be an Adrian Wilson type guy, though he can’t hit like Adrian who is a top 5 safety in this league and plays SS. Gibril on the other hand is inhuman and is showing up big time.

  121. severeraider-Brothers United Says:

This ain’t on Lofton, look what he has to work with. He is highly respected as a coach and even brought Drew Carter from a competitive team to this squad. One can only wonder how much more effective we would be if our passing game had Drew Carter and our running game had the Hammer. With OO on the field I gurantee that we would have been able to close out Buffalo and SD.

  122. Mike Says:

Jerry, That was the absolute most hilarious title I have ever seen for the anti-article. I applaud whilst standing.
    Post Mortem is Right…..

  123. Sea of Hands Says:

Passing games are predicated on timing and rythmn. Ours had neither yesterday. It might make a whole lot of sense to see if any of the younger guys, Higgins, Sheilins, Watkins, can add a spark. Could it be worse?

  124. deserteagle.50 Says:

What do you think Severe, put Bush in as FB??

  125. radraider Says:

wheres Drew Carter we dont know if he can play or not?121 now you sound like Al

  126. Undertaker Says:

K-Rock I agree if we can keep him down to an avg of 25 Pass AT’s we’ll have a better chance of winning. Even though Roethlisberger may have had 25 At’s avg per game his rookie year he had some games where he threw less than 20 times. Here are his stats for reg season games he appeared in 2004
    Cp/At Tds TD Int
    12/20 176 2 2
    12/22 163 1 1
    17/25 174 1 0
    16/21 231 1 1
    21/25 193 2 0
    18/24 196 2 0
    11/18 183 2 1
    10/16 134 0 1
    15/21 138 1 0
    9/20 131 0 0
    14/17 221 2 0
    9/19 144 0 2
    18/28 316 1 2
    14/19 221 2 1

Of course our defense has to choke out the opposition like the Steelers did that year when they went 15-1 if we’re going to depend on our running game.

Hopefully Jmac can improve his accuracy too.

  127. lechon Says:

How can u idiots give up on Russell? My High school has better recievers to throw to than he does.

  128. Sea of Hands Says:

Anyone who gives up on Jamarcus right now is a first class moron.

  129. K-Rock Says:

    Hey Guys…

For those who don’t know, nflshop.com has customizable shirts, jerseys, and hoodies.

Its pretty cool. You can choose color, chest logo, and put a name and number on the back, even on the T-Shirts.

Just picked out a long sleeve shirt with Large Shield on the front and LONG 75 on the back.

Not trying to push nflshop, but thought the customizable options were cool.

  130. Sea of Hands Says:

I am having a hard time comparing our team right now to Roethlisbergers lst year team. His team went 15-1 his first year. They were 6-10 the year before, and 10-5-1 the year before that. Roethlisberger did not walk into the culture of losing that pervades this team. Until a group of young players decide this is THEIR team, and they are tired of getting rolled, it doesn’t matter who the coach is, they are going to get rolled. Everyone says it was Gruden that turned this franchise. More likely it was guys like Gannon, Rice and Romanowski who don’t tolerate losing.

  131. severeraider-Brothers United Says:

    Radraider,

And u sound like you dont know what you’re talking about. With Drew in the lineup it works two fold; it gives us the legitimate deep threat with size and it moves Curry to the #3 spot. It has been well documented that Curry works best out of the slot so Carter improves our whole lineup by making us deeper. He had also built a good rapport with Russell and shown consistent hands, thus giving J-rock a reliable target.

  132. LittleBoPeep Says:

    Cleveland Browns Rule!

  133. Hell Raiderrrs Says:

    LMN
    Thanks for the info

  134. severeraider-Brothers United Says:

    Desert eagle,

Bush has the size but he doesn’t have anywhere near the physicality of Oren. I mean I saw guys shy away from Oneal in games. It is hard to find iso guys that simply love to hit and that posess the ability to catch that he did. He was by far our best blocking fullback since Ritchie and is the same class as Neal when it comes to pounding on the opponent. He would transform our late game performances, I saw the guy take on DT’s and win the battle. He was a big part of our run game last year.

  135. Rob Ryan's Buffoonery Says:

Look at this load of crap Al Davis has built the team around:

    Michael Huff: Garbage
    MeAngelo Hall: Garbage
    Jammy Russell: Garbage
    Javon Walker: Garbage

This team is screwed for years to come.

  136. K-Rock Says:

    Undertaker…

I agree. He had 4 games with over 24 attempts. Would have been interesting to see who those games were against and the scores.

I still think Knapp had the right plan against the Saints. They are the 27th ranked pass defense in the league and are strong against the run. They held Adrian Peterson to 32 yards. They may be ranked 16th against the run, but they are only giving up 107 yards a game average.

The Vikings beat the Saints with good defense and timely passing by Frerotte. Berrian had a huge game with 127 yards receiving and a TD.

The Raiders got neither of those things. The passing game had to be effective to have a chance.

This is not the last time the Raiders will face a defense like that this year.

The Ravens are only giving up 66 yards per game on the ground this year, but I bet most of these morons in here will think Cable should just pound the rock anyway.

The Jets are giving up only 66 yards per game on the ground, but that is because they are getting scorched through the air. They are giving up 237 yards passing per game.

How do would you attack a team giving up 240 passing yards per game?

I know, say Kiffin followers, lets run the ball 80% of the time. We are a running team. Doesn’t matter what the weaknesses are on the opponents defense. Just run it anyway.

Sounds as stubborn as they claim Al Davis to be.

  137. lechon Says:

How are u gonna call Russell garbage when he has slow fat lazy revievers to throw to, You guys dont know the concept of the game. Morons

  138. severeraider-Brothers United Says:

    sea of hands,

Shut up…….just kidding. Your last 3 sentences were as profound as the words of Aristotle or Plato. Truer things have never been said, this team is simply too comfortable losing. The pain of defeat is not worse than the pain of a body and mind worked and pushed to its limits in their eyes, truly sad.

[...] [Raiders] Raiders Head Coach Tom Cable Disputes Trade Rumors Raiders interim head coach Tom Cable disputed the rumor that the team is trying to trade RB Justin Fargas or RB Michael Bush before tomorrow’s trade deadline. "I don’t believe that’s accurate in any way," Cable said. "I know the trade deadline is coming up, certainly, and we’ll listen to anybody. But those are names at least I had not heard of. No one would be doing that, I don’t think. Those are two really good players on this football team." Source: Contra Costa Times [...]

  141. i dress in black Says:

Sea of Hands - you can’t compare Ben’s first year to JR situation. Although Pitt was 6-10 the year before they went 15-1 with him as a rookie, lets not forget that was because they were disseminated by injury. The year before that they played in the AFC Championship. They were a solid team with talent. Not taking anything away from Ben but I think it is allot easier when you are surrounded by talent and leaders. I think a better comparison would be Matt Ryan’s situation in Atlanta. Were they not supposed to be the worst team in the league?

  142. Rob Ryan's Buffoonery Says:

    Russell was 13-for-35!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The guy has done nothing since we drafted him. He is garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kiffin was right..we should have drafted Brady Quinn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I want Kiffin Back!

  144. Los Malosos Says:

Jerry, thanks for Bugel’s, errr, Cable’s remarks. How the hell would Cable know Al’s shoping Fargas or Bush? You think Al is gonna run personnel things by him? NO way dude, specially not after Kwame the human turnstile was a personal choice of Cable’s. Hey Al, we need a D lineman, really, we do. Hey Al, you suck, really, really, you do.

  145. ???????????? Says:

Cable is a yes man. You can see it all through his presser. “Yeah I talked to him a few times, and he was real helpful.” Stupid yes man!

  146. toneeg Says:

Is it just me or is Tom Cable another Joe Bugel?
Cable is a dead man walking. The Raiders looked pathetic off a bye. The firing of Kiffin set the team back two years. Throw the ball down field is the mantra of senile old Al. Without a pass rush I’m amazed the Raider’s didn’t blitz more. But, mano a mano is another Davis motto. We will be lucky if we win another game.

  152. Los Malosos Says:

Let me get this straight, Cable has been a coach here since last year. Yet, he needed JR to step back and throw it 35 times so he’d get an idea of how far along on his development he was. Yo, Cable! you’ve see him every day for the past 2 years, and you don’t know what he can do? Hint, he holds the ball for too long, he leads receivers into defenders, he’s got no long ball…

  153. ???????????? Says:

  154. raiderhomey Says:

Yep, ol Al can really pick’em, and by the way, I think the football gods r paying it back to Al n spades for all of his goon squad tactics over the years. If you don’t believe me then someone please explain why the leauge has not notified the officials that the Raiders will loose games all by themselves these daze, the close scrutiny n calls is completely unnessasary.

  164. raiderhomey Says:

Why don’t they throw the ball to Zach minimum 10 times a game? why don’t they blitz Howard minimum 5 times a game? Answer, Al don’t like it, so we ain’t a gonna do it, period end of story.

  191. [Raiders] Raiders To Shake Up Their Receiver Depth Chart? - GridironFans.com Says:

[...] [Raiders] Raiders To Shake Up Their Receiver Depth Chart? Interim Raiders head coach Tom Cable hinted there could be a shakeup at wide receiver, with starters Curry and Javon Walker combining for just 11 catches. Specifically who and all that I dont know that Im ready to speak on that yet, Cable said. But I do know this. Weve got to catch the ball when its thrown to us and weve got to run the right routes that were supposed to and be where we need to be on time. Thats the beauty of the passing game some people really dont get. First youve got to protect it and then youve got to run the right routes at the right depth on time in the right places. Youve got to read route conversions versus man and zone and your quarterbacks got to go bang, bang, bang, and thats all got to happen in 2.8 seconds. So were not there yet. Were taking about three and a half seconds. So well get it. Source: Oakland Tribune [...]

two weeks to prepare and thats the effort the team gives??

Sigh….they should have ran the ball more with Fargas and mix it up and use the wild hog style to confuse the saints defense. Noooooo…they had to force the issue to throw the ball down field more?? Controlling the clock and getting the running game going would have helped keep the saints offense off the field!

This team can’t force the issue with Russell and have throw the ball 35-40 times…not going to work yet.

  212. Norco_Bob Says:

Gladiator starting on HBO right now.

  213. ???????????? Says:

That would be a good idea. I actually think Walter could be a better QB at this point.

  214. Norco_Bob Says:

I would also start Walter,..hes better then Russell,..Tui is also better.

  215. ???????????? Says:

  216. ???????????? Says:

Russell sucks,..cut/trade right now,..deadline is tomorrow,..get anything for him,…or just cut him,…hes a fraud,..wasnt even that good at LSU,…not that that mattered to Davis,..he saw footage of him tossin pigskin 65 yards on his knee.

    You got that right!!
Someone should have told Davis … this is the NFL not the pass punt and kick competition.

I think Russell tries to overpower his throws too mu

That’s not the problem … he had lots of time to throw but had NO IDEA who or where to throw the ball.

  221. Norco_Bob Says:

I watch SEC football closely,..Russell wasnt that good there,..no awards,..nada,..wasnt invited to NY for Heisman awards,..hes a total fraud,..big arm, nuthin else.

  222. ???????????? Says:

Dude even Favre knows when to Dart the ball and when not to!

  223. ScottyBRaider Says:

I’m disgusted with the Raiders and Davis. At least they were competitive with Kiffin, now they’re back to stinking up the joint. It’s about time to abandon them after almost 40 years as a fan.

  224. ???????????? Says:

Really upset we wasted the money!

    Wait on which player?

  225. rich_gannons_love_child Says:

i’m not gonna lie fellas. i’m nearly done with this team. this is what we get AFTER a bye week. usually i’m a silver-lining, glass half-full-type of guy, however, there is NOTHING redeeming about this team. i’m not saying they don’t have great players, they do. it’s all completely moot, though. as long as al davis is alive and in charge, this team will be a bottom feeder on the field and a complete joke off it.

how bad have things gotten when dennis green sounds like an upgrade!!! disgusting.
