Raiders hold to status quo

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 at 8:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders made no deals at the NFL trade deadline, which is no surprise to anyone who heard the “fire Kiffin” press conference by Al Davis or read the transcripts.

Davis thinks the Raiders have plenty of great players, a winning team just waiting for the proper direction to unleash their power on the rest of the NFL.

Raiders coach Tom Cable has fallen in line, saying he understands if people think he’s crazy, but that he truly believes in this team.

Pardon the skepticism based on the last five-plus seasons, not to mention 1995 through 1997, but Mike White and Joe Bugel said the same thing.

Look, I’ve heard nothing but good things about Cable from the linemen who worked under him as well as those who were with Atlanta when he was there. But the New Orleans game, which looked too similar to the Denver game in Week 1, cries out for a wait-and-see attitude, if not outright doubt.

Profootballtalk.com is reporting the Raiders were indeed active at the trade deadline, attempting to trade running back Michael Bush to the San Diego Chargers.

This would be a hard deal to fathom, particularly given the deal would reportedly involve a second-day draft pick.

Bush is buried behind Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden, but has shown enough to look as if he could be a steal given his size, receiving ability and athletic skill. Hard to believe the Raiders would consider this one unless they got something much better than the fourth-round pick they expended to get him.

Otherwise, what would be the point of taking him in the first place and then showing enough patience to nurse him back to health after a broken leg?

A couple of ex-Raider rumblings on a players day off:

– Former Raiders center Adam Treu remembers eating too much Cajun food during the Raiders last visit to the French Quarter.

– I realize that DeAngelo Hall was probably trying to be funny when he said it, but telling the USA Today that, “I wouldn’t change a thing, except I’d try to squeeze him for more money,” with regard to whether he regretted to signing with Davis and the Raiders comes off as bad form.

As for Warren Sapp’s references to a “hell pit,” remember, it’s only six weeks into the season. Lord knows what Sapp will come up in December with if the Raiders trudge to another season of double-digit losses.

Any of you AD die hards want to defend AD? He is an fn senile idiot. I bet most of that stuff he read was imagined. Kiff was a steady force and his team looked a hell of lot better than Cable’s team. This team was heading in the right direction but senile John McCain.. I mean Al Davis…has lost his way. He makes a lot of very expensive but stupid decisions. If he were Emanuel Stewart or Lew Duva, he would probably pay 50 million to coerce Sugar Ray Leonard out of retirement.

What the heck is going on in Oakland? Now Curry is talking trash. The same guy who couldn’t catch a cold at the North Pole is talking trash.

Instead of veterans stepping up, taking responsibility, and pushing the younger players, they all talk trash and cry.

Wilson wants someone to step up. WHY DOESN’T HE STEP UP!? He was brought here to be a leader and teach these guys how to win, but he is waiting for guys who know nothing but losing to step up.

The Rams wanted to prove something. It wasn’t about the owner or the coach. It was about their manhood. They went out and played like professional football players.

The Raiders play the blame game. They must have learned that one from Kiffin. Its all Al Davis’ fault that I missed that tackle, got blown off the ball, couldn’t cover an 80 year old woman, dropped every pass that hit me in the hands, got no separation off the line, and forgot how to pass block.

I am tired of hearing excuses from these guys. Step up and whip the man in front of you. DO YOUR JOB!

Its not about Al, Kiffin, Knapp, Ryan, or Cable. IT IS ABOUT THE PLAYERS.

  69. JB Says:

Michael Bush would have been a 1st round pick had he not broken his leg. Trading him for anything less than a high 2nd round was be sheer insanity. What brilliant idiot came up with him at all? We NEED 3 good running backs. A couple weeks ago proved that in spades. Both DMac & Fargas were injured and we still had Bush to fall back on. Hell, we haven’t even figured out how to best use Bush & DMac. If we trade anyone, let it be Fargas. He’s got great spirit & speed but he’s an accident waiting to happen. The fact that someone was even shopping Bush, and you know it had to be AD or someone else with AD’s blessing, tells me that the Raider management doesn’t give a schit about winning.

Bush was a Kiffin pick. Is this AD’s way of showing Kiffin who the boss is? As silly as that sounds, it probably is close to being accurate. AD has lost his mind. His inner circle is made up of IDIOTS with Davis being the head IDIOT.

We should be aligned to be one of the top 3 picks in next year’s draft. Many will say trade down but please remember in order to do that there needs to be another team that wants to trade. Rumor has it tghat next years draft will have a banner group of Juniors coming out. They are worried about the potential new agreement between the owners and union and many anticipate a $ cap on draftees. Hence, the grand exodus to the 2009 draft class. So, who do we go for?

    We need 2 OT’s, 1 OC, 2-3 WR’s, 1 MLB, 1 DT, 2 DE’s & 1 FS. Do we have that many picks? Oh well…

in alot of ways, this season was al’s last to show he still had the magic touch. he spent a vast sum of money on players that were questionable, but local fans, and the media, were fascinated- some insisting that al knew something the rest of us did not, some thinking he was senile- but fans were INTERESTED and showed up to games in droves. if this season is over, again, in october, al’s mystique will be finished. it matters little whether he knows it or not. coaches will avoid oakland like the plague, as will players- who were once among al’s most loyal supporters. all will know that an era has come to an end, is not just on hold. all the “we trust in cable” folks will have seen their hero humiliated, his system in shambles, as he loyally took a job that removes his attention from that system… there are alot of raider fans in my complex wearing alot of gear, arguing about the league and the raiders place in it. there is no arguing now, no complaining either- just resignation. as K-Rock said, it is about the players, in the end. as a great civil war general once said: ” i can see that my men are properly trained and equipped, i can get them to the right place at the right time, but the fighting- that’s all up to them- and that’s where i win or lose”. sadly, our guys, playing at 3/4 speed, don’t really seem to care if they win. what can be done about that? the FASCINATION with al’s raiders will ebb. al has loved to be hated. can he stand to be “mr. irrelevant”?

    —————————————————-

He gave him a shot and he failed… yes it’s also Jones fault. I always liked Williams and the Cowboys, so I’m going with them for at least 3 years (hopefully AD is gone ’til then). I know who I am amigo, I’m a man which is tired of seeing all that potential (JR, Aso, Morrison, Howard, Wilson, DMAC, Miller, Fargas, etc.) getting wasted by one old senile moron! I don’t got a problem with losing some games (in fact the team I play in had a 0-8 record last year and I’m fine with that) but AD doesn’t even try to win games with this franchise… It’s just ridiculous what’s going on in the raiders frontoffice!

  103. MR's downstair neighbor tired of hearing him yell at his t.v. screen while he plays Madden. Frankly, I blame you a-holes. Says:

Coinman, did these 3/4 speed players sign themselves to the team?

You started off great, then descended into the inevitable deflection of blame from Al that you Davis apologists just can’t avoid.

Yes, Davis needs to let it go. But how can he do that when his supporters won’t let it go? It may very well be that the day Al decides to hang it up is the day his loyal base finally turns on him.

Every single day old crazy Al probably goes through the same train of thought you just did. First he looks in the mirror and says to himself that his way is finished, and he has to retire. But just before he puts that thought into action, that little voice creeps into the back of his head and says, “But you can’t leave with this legacy. 111. RaiderfanNY Says:

Davis couldn’t afford to make a run at Roy Williams because he burned so much money in Javon Walker’s bank account. The Walker signing, it appears, will go down as one of the worst ever in free agency. And to think that the guy wanted to retire and give the money back! And Davis said no. How will the next few off-seasons be affected by all the money Davis wasted on Walker, Kelly and Hall? At least Gabril Wilson can tackle, which is something of a miracle…

As much as I hate Davis, I got to admit that Wilson was a great signing! 10.5 tackles vs. the Saints tells me two things: 1. he’s a great SS 2. Our D is horrible!

Unbelievable how much money he gave to Kelly (best paid DT in the NFL, what a joke), Walker (everybody knew he’s bad) and Hall (Cromartie type of guy, can make plays but gets burned to often). Plus there will be a very early first rounder (probably the fastest guy in the draft, even if it’s a RB) to sign and that means no money left for Asomugha which is our best player by far!

    Thank you Mr. Davis!

  121. Joe Raider Says:

I have to say even in light of the debacle in New Orleans and the firing of Kiffin, one of the most despicable elements of the Raiders’ current situation is Warren Sapp.To be blunt, Sapp is an ungrateful jerk. My respect for him has completely evaporated. I still respect what he was as a player, though he never seriously performed in Oakland, but he is acting disgracefully now. I have never seen a retired player slag this former team like this ass-clown. I am officially ashamed to admit Sapp was a Raider. And his play definitely didn’t warrant any loyalty from the Raider Nation. Not that he cares.I think he considers himself “Retired Tampa Bay Buccaneer Warren Sapp”.Every week some no talent beat writer does the “well guess what Warren Sapp said this time about his former team and how bad they are”.Jerry McDonald here was trolling for a quote from the ol’ QB Killa. He sure as hell took enough of Al Davis’ money for as much as he hates the team. For a lousy return on the investment, I might add. Now he is a regular on Inside the NFL so he even has an official media outlet for his Raider bashing and can do it on a weekly basis. The Raiders have issues that need to be resolved, we all know that, but in the words of Mike & Mike ” Warren Sapp, Just SHUT UP!”

  122. La Milicia Negra Says:

LOL.. well i didn’t respect Sapp when he was a Raider, so why should I now??

But I respect the likes of Gannon, Tim Brown, Lincoln Kennedy and Rod Woodson, whom all have said the same stuff, they just said it with sadness not like Sapp..

But the message is the same, We Suck and King Davis is to blame..

  123. Wishbone Says:

Just shows what a classless jackass Sapp really is. He was more than happy to take the money when he was here. Soon as he gone he starts spewing all this stuff. What’s next Jerry Rice gonna come out and say how he was cheated out of playing time when he was here or maybe Tyler Brayton will say he was misused and could have been a Pro Bowler? What a bunch of overpaid, ungrateful pieces of sh*t.

  124. RaiderRockstar Says:

“you’ve got to understand when we start winning here, this weekend when we beat the Jets it’s going to be the same way in a positive sense. I’m going to be high-fiving them and yucking it up and telling them this is what you did, this how you did it and this is why it happened.” - Tom Cable

wow. beat the Jets? i’d be happy if we even competed with the Jets. let’s not forget that Kiffin got blown out on Week 1 against the Broncos. They both started 0-1. Now if Cable wins at least 1 of the next 3 games he’ll be just as good or better than Kiffin.

Brown said if not for his intervening at times, Gannon would have had to fight his own teammates because of his attitude toward the organization.

“Gannon knows he came there with that ‘I hate the Raiders’ type mentality,” Brown said. “He came in with that and showed that to all the players. And Gannon wasn’t a very well like player his whole time with the raiders. In fact he was downright hated.

“For a guy like Rich to say something just isn’t fair to the organization.”

Cable is focused on effort and development which we need with a young team. I think Kiffin had the same idea but Cable will approach it with more tact and will get further with the strategy.

…………Perspective, as seen through hindsight, can be instructive as well as painfull. Having been raised in Los Angeles, the Rams , although usually good enough to make the playoffs, never could win it all. I remember a letter to the L.A.Times from an outraged fan ,after yet another playoff loss to either Minnosota or Dallas, that described the Rams as “the biggest choke kings of all time “…
……..Then the Raiders come to town and win the Super Bowl after only two years here. We all wished good riddance on the Rams , ( who had moved to Anaheim to chase money in a land steal that Gene Autry voided), and praised our good fortune at now having a REAL team to root for…..
……..Then it all started to go downhill, an ass-kicking in Chicago ,where upon even third string QB David Humm had his teeth knocked out signaled the beginning of the end…the next year, Marcus Allen fumbles while almost scoring the winning touchdown against Philly, and we tank after that…..Then comes the Marc Wilson disaster,( another strong arm with a penchant for both being oblivious to a backside rush and throwing interceptions as they seemed directly aimed at the defender), …the Marcus Allen benching,( the first significant hint of senility for you-know-who -and possibly why…), The Jay Schroeder disaster, the Bo Jackson Injury, and the Art Shell slide to…oh my God…mediocrity…..And then….Oh well, you know the rest…..Isn’t it sufficently humbling to concede the fact that wouldn’t it be great to just be mediocre instead of laughingstock ? I’ve heard the expression “Don’t chase bad money with good money.”…I hope that if there is ANY sense left in Al Davis’ , he understand that there will soon come a time that many of us will simply find other things to do with our discretionary time unless he brings in a competent G.M……….

  139. BART Bridge Brigade Says:

Why is Raider management not sold on Michael Bush? Was Bush a Kiffin pick that Al wants to cut ties with, is he not physical enough? I don’t understand why they would wait a year for him to get healthy, play him sparingly in a few games, then want to unload him. To me Bush looks like a more complete back than McFadden. They must know something that we don’t, or Al is just batshi.t crazy.

One thin I love about the system in american sports is the ability of going from worst to first. This is possible because everybody has about the same money to spend on salaries, the worst team gets the best draft pick and of course free agency… so everybody can go from worst to first in just about 3 years, except if your owner is Al Davis.

  155. BART Bridge Brigade Says:

Some thoughts on our 6th Annual coaching search:

If Al were to bring in some executive with a fresh football mind to revive this offense, they might want to consider copying what Arkansas did with McFadden, and what Miami is currently doing (since this is a copycat league after all). In that vein they might consider Houston Nutt (current Ole Miss coach) for a head coach spot, or David Lee (current Miami QB coach)and Gus Malzahn (current Tulsa OC) as an offensive coordinator, so they can run a variation of the single-wing that McFadden had alot of success with. The single-wing is very effective if your best players are multiple RB’s and a FB (does that sound familiar). It would at least give our offense a crutch, until the WR’s develop, and it would introduce a wrinkle into our red-zone offense, which is severly limited right now.

As Rob Ryan is finishing off the final year of his contract, I hope Al is seriously considering another direction for this defense.

In that vein, please Al take a long look at Everett Withers, current DC of the UNC Tarheels. This guy runs a man coverage unit, with mostly 4 man pressure (sound familiar). He was the defensive backs coach for the Titans for 6 years, where he developed Pacman among others. He also turned around the Texas Longhorns defense back in 1998. Currently UNC leads the country in interceptions. This guy is a bad mamma-jamma, and would fit Al’s defensive philosophy like a glove. Check him out Nation.

  180. RaiderRockstar Says:

I’d cut Sam Williams or Jon Alston to bring in Napolean Harris. Whichever player is more valuable on special teams gets to stick.

I’d cut Hiram Eugene or Rashad Baker to bring in Copper. Whichever player is more valuable on special teams gets to stick. Maybe even place Ben Troupe on IR? Hasn’t been able to practice or play since he was signed..

  181. 408RAIDER Says:

    who bout cutting Sam willams!

  182. RaiderRockstar Says:

Ajoakraider: trading a 1st, 3rd & 6th to the Lions for Roy Williams doesn’t make sense. The Cowboys could afford to do that, but we couldn’t. Especially if we had to cut Walker to do it and pay him all that money for essentially nothing. Even though it looks like (right now) we’re not getting any production out of Walker, i’m holding out hope for the future.

good teams build through the draft, not free agency. we need to solidify both the o-line and d-line in April’s draft. If we don’t have a good o-line for Russell & McFadden (our future), it’s not gonna do any good to have a lights out receiver, especially at that price. If J-Russ & D-Mac are ineffective due to the o-line and we can’t stop the run on D - we aren’t going to win any games. BUILD THE LINES!!! battles are won & lost in the trenches

    ======================================================
Singletary is a highly regarded coach, therefore he would not come here. He will have other choices and will probably receive counsel not to come to the Raiders given our organizational philosophy.

The best bet for veteran leadership is Jim Fassell. He should have been hired over Cable, so that the team could get used to Fassell now instead of waiting for the offseason. The rest of these coaches on the current staff will be released. Ryan, Knapp, Cable, all out.

    Get Fassell

  185. S&B Says:

    RaiderRockstar,

If Roy Williams was available and signable, the Raiders should have traded to get him. Here’s why?

    1. J-Russell will not develop into a competent QB without a good reliable receiver that fights for his QB and makes plays. No young QB in the league could succeed with the Raiders current roster of WRs

    2. Finding receivers in the draft that can make an immediate impact is difficult to do

    3. Given above, trading draft picks for a known commodity (that’s young) would, to me, be a good idea

  190. Scottish Raider Says:

S&B, but not at the price that Dallas has paid. Williams is good and will strengthen the Cowboys offense but that trade is a real smart move by the Lions. They can use those picks for a real rebuilding exercise.

In 2009, we also need picks - not more very expensive veterans.

scottish, i hope Kiffin does apply for the Clemson job. somebody needs to hire the liar! haha

S&B: do you know what the numbers are on Roy Williams new contract? i imagine he’s being paid as one of the Top 10 WR’s in the league

what would you guys think about Mike Singletary as HC and Ken Norton Jr as the new D-Cord? That would bring some toughness..

Odale vatos, if yoo reely want to win in Oak Land Tomas Flores is the only choice for HC. HeTomas Flores would bring in Antonio Munoz as OC and Manny Fernandez as DC. VIVA LA RAZA!!!

I would try to do that but they are all pot heads and Dakota might shoot first and ask questions later if I tried to send them his way…

hopefully hell get over it.. its been a ruff year for him tho.. A man can only take so much loosing you dig? first his lakers then his cubbies and now OUR RAIDERS … I totally understand…

  194. RaiderRockstar Says:

Cowboys offered the Raiders Flozell Adams and Terrell Owens for Derrick Burgess & Javon Walker!

    Raiders declined…

    Scottish Raider,

So what alternatives do we have right now for getting Russell a receiver to grow with. A receiver that is a star. I don’t see Russell being successful with the receivers we have now. That’s why the trade for Williams sounded good to me. A young guy, a dominant talent and a guy Russell can grow with.

Javon Walker wasn’t good enough for Cutler
Ashlie Lelie wasn’t good enough for JT O’Sullivan
Drew Carter wasn’t good enough for Delomme

Yet these castoffs are good enough for Russell….

WE HAVE TO GET RUSSELL SOMEBODY OR HE WILL BECOME A BUST!!!!!!!

  196. La Milicia Negra Says:

Sad thing is we haven’t got any trade bait..

  197. RaiderRockstar Says:

Curry wasn’t good enough for Brooks, Collins, Walter, Culpepper or McCown?

Williams wasn’t good enough for Kitna?

  198. S&B Says:

I also question the ability of a rookie wide receiver to come in and make an immediate impact. Its a toss up with a young player. And usually a young receiver has a number two to take some of the pressure off.

Without a WR, Russell will be a bust. How much would that cost us?

  199. RaiderRockstar Says:

Moss wasn’t good enough for Collins, Brooks or Walter?

Curry is a serviceable number 3 receiver. That’s it.

As for the 2nd sentence…its more like Kitna wasn’t good enough for Williams!

Really????????? are you really saying this????

  203. RaiderRockstar Says:

The Lions have a crappy o-line. That is why Kitna was constantly on his back and they can’t run the football. I think he’s been sacked the most of any starter the past 2-3 years in DET. If the Lions would have built the line first instead of wasting picks on WR’s they might have won some games.

click on my hyper link and listen to track #3 it will be stuck in your head all day also ….

  205. RaiderRockstar Says:

signing bust RT Kwame Harris from the 49ers bench and making him starting LT wasn’t a cure all for our o-line (obviously). Neither was moving DE Kelly to DT and paying him a bunch of money a fix for a poor run defense.

  206. RaiderRockstar Says:

my point from all these posts is this:

you have to have all the other players in place for your playmakers to make plays. how much use was Randy Moss in Oakland? how much of a stud would Adrian Peterson be w/o that awesome o-line in front of him? big named players doesn’t always equal big time success. See Russell, McFadden, Walker, Hall, Wilson signings as proof

  207. Juan Valdez Jr. Says:

Vatos! The problem with the nation is they don’t have any latino coaches or players. Start with making Tomas Flores the next coach and he will get players like Gonzales from the Colts and Martinez from the Broncos.

  208. S&B Says:

    RaiderRockstar,
The O-Line for the Raiders does need to get better. But right now its serviceable. Could it be better? Yes. Let’s use our 2nd rounder next year to fix it. The D-Line has actually played ok. The problem with the defense, IMO, is the abysmal play of
