Johnson back at practice
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, November 21st, 2008 at 10:57 am in Oakland Raiders.
Cornerback Chris Johnson, who sat out the previous day with a knee injury, had his helmet in hand and appeared ready to practice Friday as warmups and drills concluded and the Raiders started team sessions in preparation for Denver.
Johnson has given the Raiders an upgrade at left cornerback, taking over for DeAngelo Hall, and his presence will be important for a secondary sure to be tested by Jay Cutler and one of the NFL’s most explosive passing attacks.
More to come later . . .

Anyone know what Johnson’s contract status is? How many years left?
November 21st, 2008 at 11:09 am
bad news Raider fans. Chris Johnson isn’t starter quality to begin with. Having him playing hurt, trying to cover a solid receiver who plays physical like Marshall will be a difficult task, as will lining up with the speedy Royal. I say start Routt and have Johnson in for nickel & dime packages. the donks have two reliable TE’s as well and Michael Huff, while not a great tackler, is a good cover man and has shut out the league’s elite TE’s like Tony Gonzalez & Antonio Gates the past 2 years. Meanwhile, Wilson & Eugene are better vs the run, but stink in pass coverage. We need Huff in this game to cover Scheffler and/or Graham. Remember Morrison trying to cover Scheffler 50 yards down the field in Week 1? bad move…

So true man. I hope Rob Ryan keeps his bigazz mouth shut on Johnson. Last thing we need is that idiot making great proclamations about Johnson so that Davis is more inclined to give him a big contract, as you mentioned.

STI: they already called Johnson the 2nd best corner on the team and that was when Hall was still here. They used that as part of the reason Hall was released. They must think highly of him. Nnamdi was even giving props to him after he was givin the starting nod.

oak rev: CJ is way better than Waddell, Bowie and the overrated loudmouth DeAngelo “toast” Hall. Not sure about Routt though. both have track star speed and limited coverage skills. At least Routt is healthy. I don’t want a guy with a bum knee covering Marshall or Royal the speedster.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:43 am
I thought Johnson was garbage, too, but there’s no denying the pass D has been much improved the last two weeks since he moved in:
– 5 sacks
– 4 INTs
– 123 yards per game
– 47% opposing QB completion pct.
And that’s against two winning teams with veteran QBs.
That’s the level D-Hall was supposed to get us to.
Denver will be a huge test though.

LMN, why not? better than letting him rot on the bench! Look how well Curry did last week after being tossed back in the lineup. I’d hate to see us cut or trade Huff and see him become a shutdown corner for another team for the next 5-10 years. It’s possible. He has the skill set, the attitude, all the attributes. In college he was flying around the field playing multiple positions and he tackled really well in space. Then we make him SS for 2 years (big mistake - stunted his growth) and only gave him 5 games this season to adjust to the new position. How many years did we give Stu & Derrick back there? too many! Huff, not nearly enough..
November 21st, 2008 at 11:46 am
I say, CJ is way better than Routt. What has Routt ever done? at least CJ came up big against Carolina and Miami.

November 21st, 2008 at 11:48 am
Stanford Routt was benched earlier in the year because his attitude was, to put it nicely, poor. Chris Johnson on the other had spent the off season working with Deon Sanders to try to get better. Just imagine if guys on our roster, guys like Grove, Gallery, harris, Green, Routt, Kelly, Richardson, Burgess, Baker, Huff, put down their video games, all spent some of their billions of dollars and time to work with individual position coaches to get better at what they do. Imagine that. We need more guys on this team like Chris Johnson. Guys that take it upon themselves to get better. Cable recognized that.

Chris in NY:
nice post. i love stats. they never lie.
Here’s hoping for more of the same from CJ. Maybe the injury won’t limit him too bad? He’ll have ample opportunity to show what he’s got, that’s for sure. He’ll be tested all game long unless Hillis & Bell trample our poor run defense for 150 yards and 2 or 3 scores.

oak rev,
Routt was benched was lack of effort on a special teams play. He wasn’t benched from the starting lineup like Curry, he was demoted from nickel back to keep Eugene in along with Huff on passing downs. He took it like a man. He’s never had a bad attitude. I agree with you on CJ though. Gotta love his dedication to improve and make himself a better football player. Wish others followed that example as well.

you can make stats say whatever you want.in baseball stats count-in football stats are insignificant and at times lie(ie. a Qb throws 5 passes in a qtr. and all 5 passes are behind the line of scrimmage to a RB.all the passes result in large gains and makes it look as if the QB is throwing for a lot of yds. when actually it’s the RB who is responsible).

“It is the massive left tackle who has shut out sack masters Joey Porter and John Abraham this season.
It is the dynamic receiver and return man who caught nine passes for 146 yards in his NFL debut and is a legitimate rookie-of-the-year and Pro Bowl candidate.
It is the fullback — a former college linebacker — who on Sunday became the first NFL player in five years to start on offense and defense.
It is the seventh-round pick, best known for blocking for Darren McFadden and Felix Jones in college, who has made the sudden switch from fullback to tailback quite nicely.
It is the undrafted linebacker who took over for one of the leading tacklers in the NFL and has given the team a spark.
It is all of these players who have made the Denver Broncos’ 2008 rookie class arguably the best in the NFL and one of the deepest rookie classes in team history.”
November 21st, 2008 at 12:10 pm
“Before the season, it was widely regarded that the Kansas City Chiefs had one of the best rookie classes in recent memory. The Chiefs’ deep rookie class is good. But it has been overshadowed by the Denver class that wasn’t as ballyhooed. However, thanks to stunning and historic performances by the Denver rookies, the team has rebounded from a midseason malaise and is taking control of the AFC West with a 6-4 record.
If Denver is going to close out strong and win its first division crown since 2005, these rookies will have to play a major role.”
November 21st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
“When Broncos coach Mike Shanahan predicted on a Denver radio station during training camp that his team would make the playoffs, he probably knew he had a nice crop of youngsters. But he couldn’t have known it was going to be this good.”
November 21st, 2008 at 12:12 pm
“This is Denver’s third straight strong rookie class after years of failing in the draft. Denver has rebuilt its team through the draft since 2006, when it drafted quarterback Jay Cutler, tight end Tony Scheffler, wide receiver Brandon Marshall and defense end Elvis Dumervil. This year’s rookie crop may be even deeper.”
November 21st, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I think Johnson is an upgrade also.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:14 pm
“First round, offensive tackle Ryan Clady:
Clady, the No. 12 overall pick, has been as good at left tackle as Cleveland’s Joe Thomas was last year as a rookie. Clady should get serious Pro Bowl consideration. He has allowed a half a sack in 10 games. He is one of three tackles in the NFL not to allow a full sack this season. Clady shut down Porter and Abraham, who have a combined 24.5 sacks this season, in games this season. He is arguably the team’s MVP. The Broncos struck gold at one of the most vital positions on the field.”
November 21st, 2008 at 12:17 pm
I think it would be a lot harder to move Huff to Corner, than Bush to FullBack, and I disagree with both. But playing Corner take a lot of skill. You don’t just roll into that position.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:17 pm
“Second round, wide receiver Eddie Royal:
I recall talking to a member of the Denver staff in June. He said the staff was convinced, after the minicamp season, that the Virginia Tech product would be an impact player. Originally, the Broncos drafted Royal to be an impact player in the return game and a developmental player as a receiver. But Royal came to town as a polished player. He has teamed with Marshall to give Denver one of the best 1-2 receiver punches in the NFL. Royal, who is also getting it done as a returner, has 56 catches and four touchdowns in nine games. He has compiled at least 200 all-purpose yards in three games. Royal turned the league on its ear with his big game in Oakland to start the season and he hasn’t stopped. He looks like a long-term answer at receiver.”

Should I stop? Or do you want to say cun tler again?

” Comments: The last time the Raiders found themselves in this situation Tom Flores was the team quarterback and the late Eddie Erdelatz, Marty Feldman and Red Conkright were patrolling the sidelines. That was forty-five years ago and after their disastrous start the clubs managing partners decided to hire a relatively unheralded Chargers assistant named Al Davis to the position of head coach. The decision proved to be one of the greatest moves in football history, but four decades later, it now appears that the person most responsible for the team’s success on the field (Al Davis) is the one great deterrent to the team future successes.”

for Russell, McFadden and Schilens the difference is experience. They’ve had half a season since then. The Raiders defense played pretty well against the Panthers and Dolphins the last 2 weeks and they are much better teams than the donks. Curry won’t have the drops this time around, because he’s playing with something to prove. Harris vowed to have no false starts the rest of the season. and then the addition by subtraction: Lane Kiffin, DeAngelo Hall and Javon Walker. Walker might be on the sidelines, but at least he won’t be crying about being inactive because he deems himself “healthy enough”.

I remember Don Shula saying once, that you adapt your schemes to your talent, not the other way around. You gotta let players do what they do best.
When he won Championships in Baltimore, they were a ground & pound, rugged defensive team with Johnny U of course.
In his latter years in Miami after the 14-0 team, he coached flashy Dan Marino passing teams.
I remember Bum Phillips saying about him “He’ll take his’n and beat your’n. Then take your’n and beat his’n.
Al Davis puts ideology before reality. Like the Republicans. You gotta let players do what they do best. Not force them to do things they don’t do well.

that’s true. Everybody knew Huff was undersized at SS. He’s not a “down in the box” kind of player. He’s not a heavy hitter. After moving to FS, everybody said that was his natural position, but he played safety AND corner in college. He didn’t have a ton of INT’s in college either, yet was solid in pass defense. It’s the same story in Oakland. He misses a few tackles and drops a few INT’s and now he’s in the doghouse. We need to find a Defensive Coordinator who can help players get better, rather than just plugging them in at different positions when they don’t do well in one spot. Like Brayton moving from DE to OLB, back to DE, then DT. That’s 4 positions in 4 years! Sapp at DE? stupid

OR you have to get players that fit your system.
I agree with you though. Combat is a highly fluid situation subjet to change with out a moments notice, so you have to be able to adapt on the fly and go with your strengths rather than force and agenda sometimes.
Fine balance between running with the game plan and adjusting to adversity.
ie like the Denver Broncos.
4 RB’s on IR. NO linebackers ect. ect.
They are a beatable team. If only Oakland would stop beating itself.

Don’t overlook lousy Raiders
Loss to rivals could kill playoff chances
Daniel Williams, DDN Staff Writer
Friday, November 21, 2008
Do not get too excited just yet, Denver Broncos fans, because a loss to the hated (and terrible) Oakland Raiders would likely crush the Denver Broncos’ playoff aspirations.
Who are these guys?
They are the hated Raiders, but one thing that Broncos fans like about them is that they are so terrible. The Raiders have been the most-losing team in the past decade, and they have turned into the laughing stock of the league.
Players like Randy Moss, Warren Sapp, Javon Walker go to Oakland for the cash but quickly turn disgruntled when they realize they are in NFL hell with no chance to win.
The team has had four different head coaches in five years and with owner Al Davis, who has turned into a cartoon character of his former self at helm.
Two weeks ago, the Raiders released cornerback DeAngelo Williams, a 25-year-old former Pro Bowl cornerback who the team gave up a second and fifth round draft pick months before and then gave him $17 million this season. It was a “never-see” type of move, obviously one out of desperation and obviously one to cut costs.
The Raiders also have missed on their past two No. 1 draft picks: Jamarcus Russell and Darren McFadden – who are making over $100 million combined.
Russell looks like an NFL backup who will never be as good as Daunte Culpepper, and McFadden has been an average back this season at best.
Things in Oakland are bad right now, and they will be lucky to find a legitimate head coach this off-season who would be willing to take on this mess – along with dealing with Davis.
One bright spot for Oakland is the play of their cornerback, Nnamdi Asomugha, who has been the best cornerback in NFL, and maybe even the league’s best defensive player. He has been flying under the radar for the past few years, but quarterbacks and offensive coordinators know not to throw his way.
If Denver gets into trouble in Sunday, it is likely that a Cutler error picked off by Asomugha got them there.

What They’re Saying in Denver
_________________________________________________-
What to expect:
Expect Denver’s offense to come out on the attack. Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan does not want this game to turn into a back-and-forth grind-out game where Oakland keeps it close to the end.
Denver’s offense looks at this game as an opportunity to put up 40 points and to embarrass their rivals.
Denver will keep running whoever is in their backfield until Oakland can stop them, and if Oakland cannot, Hillis may be a star again.
Oakland will serve a heavy dose of the running game also, and they will even line up their running back McFadden at quarterback and let him run wild in the trendy “wildcat” offense.
However, Oakland has dreadful receivers, and they are unable to stretch the field, allowing teams to make their offense one-dimensional.
Oakland will need a couple big turnovers and a score on special teams to keep this game close. Raiders’ players might have already quit on the season, but they get paid too and they may also have a spoiler game left in them.
Our money is on:
Denver 37, Oakland 17 – The Broncos will play a solid overall game and should dominate in every facet. Oakland my keep it close early, but expect this game to get ugly for Oakland by halftime.
Denver has too much firepower and Oakland has no answers. Start all of your offensive Broncos on your fantasy teams.

Two weeks ago, the Raiders released cornerback DeAngelo Williams, a 25-year-old former Pro Bowl cornerback who the team gave up a second and fifth round draft pick months before and then gave him $17 million this season. It was a “never-see” type of move, obviously one out of desperation and obviously one to cut costs.

if Huff can’t react quickly enough to be a FS,how do you see him covering fast WRs?he should stay at safety and when Ryan leaves we’ll see if he is so good.he needs to learn how to tackle though.

very good point.. I still liked us to see it, just one game =) I hope we’ll get Raheem as DC I bet he could make Huff better.. heck the guy made Buchanon a top CB.. I now its another scheme, but still.. =)

“Harris is so smart, I was thinking of switching him with Jamarcus to see if that would jumpstart the offense. Jamarcus has quick feet and could probably become the dominant left tackle that I projected him to be coming out of college”

NFL Preview - Oakland (2-8) at Denver (6-4)
By Tony Moss, Sports Network
The Sports Network
In last Sunday’s win at the Atlanta Falcons, the Denver Broncos proved that their beleaguered defense could exhibit solid play for four quarters against a quality opponent with a dangerous offensive cast.
The Broncos’ task on Sunday, against an Oakland Raiders team that is neither high-quality nor boasts any semblance of offensive consistency, figures to be far less challenging.
The Raiders (2-8) come into Invesco Field at Mile High having not scored an offensive touchdown in 13 quarters dating back to a third-quarter JaMarcus Russell touchdown pass to Justin Griffith against Baltimore on Oct. 26th.
Since that time, the Silver and Black have found the end zone just once, a 93- yard punt return for a score by Johnnie Lee Higgins against Miami last Sunday. That fourth-quarter TD actually put the Raiders ahead, 15-14, until the ensuing Dolphins drive resulted in a game-winning field goal and handed Miami a 17-15 win. The result extended Oakland’s losing streak to four since an overtime victory against the Jets in Week 7.
The Raiders have not scored a first-quarter touchdown this season, and have not scored a first-quarter touchdown on the road since Sept. 30, 2007, when current Detroit Lion Daunte Culpepper rushed for a touchdown against the Dolphins.
Entering Week 12, Oakland is last in the NFL in scoring offense (12.8 points per game), passing offense (136.9 yards per game), completion percentage (49.6), touchdowns (10), rushing touchdowns (3), passing touchdowns (6), and third-down percentage (22.1).
The Broncos, meanwhile, feature one of the most powerful passing attacks in the league, though as mentioned, it was the defense that was the story in last week’s 24-20 win at Atlanta.

“Some years later, he’d find his way to Oakland. That last year with the Raiders, he threw for 3,759 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Not bad for a guy who was sacked 39 times. But, hey, Collins always knew how to take a beating.”

marshall is a thug (how many arrests?) HE’S GOT HIS ACT TOGETHER NOW…HOW MANY DUI’S DOES YOUR MOST VALUABLE PK HAVE? AND ISN’T STABLER IN THE HOOSEGOW FOR HIS DUI?
and cutler has diabetes. OOOOH HE’S GOT DIABETES OOOOOH SEND HIM TO THE LEPER COLONY. MAYBE YOUR QB SHOULD GET DIABETES. AT LEAST HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO PASS FOR A BUCK FIFTY.

31 Raiders 2-8 - 28/32 They haven’t cracked 20 points since Week 3, and have only done it twice all season. Something tells me that deep down in places he doesn’t talk about publicly (or to Lane Kiffin), Al Davis may be regretting drafting JaMarcus Russell.
November 21st, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Kook Kell, No. 76,
WTF is that?
Obviously this guy knows what he’s talking about. Because only a genius writer from Donkey Country knows that Warren Sapp, Randy Moss and Javon Walker are such winners that the team was the problem and not the other way around.
McFadden and Russell busts?
What a tool.
Russell has a half-season of play and looks better than Cutler did at this point with less talent around him.
McFadden has been injured but is averaging 5 yards a run.
This fool should be reminded of this column every time the Raiders — and specifically, Russell and McFadden — smack his lame azz team around for the next decade.

hes a huge improvement at left corner..

#34 yeah Iam sure Butler will throw 3 INT this week but how many is Cutler going to throw. LOL
As for Johnson yeah he is an upgrade only because Hall was playing so poorly. But that was the fault of Davis bring a cover to corner into a man to man deffence its like sticking a square peg in a round hole lol.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
RaiderRockstar: Chris Johnson won the starting CB job legitimately. He did not win by result of injury; he beat out both Hall, and Routt. He is a legitimate starting NFL cornerback.
