ESPN: Mort said he was sorry
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 at 7:33 am in Oakland Raiders.
Here’s how ESPN ombudsman Le Anne Schrieber reacted to Chris Mortensen’s reluctance to check stories with the Raiders because of their history of denials.
I sent an e-mail to Schreiber immediately after the report to determine if a “privilege policy” existed at ESPN with regard to fact-checking.
A column by Schreiber currently posted on ESPN.com includes a passage which says Mortensen agreed he should have checked the story and in fact apologized to CEO Amy Trask.
On Sunday, Jan. 4, on “NFL Countdown” and later on ESPN.com, senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen reported that the Oakland Raiders were negotiating to sell a controlling interest in the team to a billionaire investor with a known hankering to move an NFL franchise to Los Angeles. Raiders chief executive Amy Trask issued a heated denial of Mortensen’s report, saying, among other scalding things, “Chris contacted no one with the Raiders to ascertain if there was any truth to his report. There is not.”
When asked for a response to Trask’s statement, Mortensen sent The Associated Press an e-mail, noting “The Raiders have lost the privilege with me of running stories past them for comment. This stems from their history of denials to most stories I have reported — as well as others in the media — when those stories have eventually proven to be true.”
My first thought upon learning of this from my usual and best source — my mailbag — was that it couldn’t be true. Chris Mortensen wouldn’t say that. He knows perfectly well that a reporter must always give the subject of his story a chance to respond, no matter how frustrating and predictably unfruitful that response is likely to be.
A quick check of ESPN.com showed that Mortensen had issued a second statement, noting that he regretted invoking the notion of it being “a privilege” to communicate with him, but he referred again to the Raiders’ history of denials. It was not clear to me whether he — and by extension, ESPN — was scuttling the basic journalistic principle of allowing subjects the opportunity to respond.
When I e-mailed my concern to Vince Doria, ESPN senior vice president and director of news, he promptly wrote back: “A call should have been made to Raiders.” Later, I talked directly to Mortensen, who said even before I could ask, “I was wrong on both counts: one, for not soliciting comment, and two, for daring to label it a privilege. I called Amy Trask and apologized.”
Whew. A one-time lapse. But here is my unanswered question: Why didn’t someone at either ESPN’s television or online news desk remind Mortensen of that basic journalistic principle when he needed reminding?
And just as importantly, after failing to do that, why didn’t someone at ESPN elicit that straightforward “I was wrong” statement that Mortensen handed me on a platter? It would have reduced the glare considerably.
Side note: Mort is reporting Giants offensive coordiator Kevin Gilbride is visiting the Raiders Thursday for an on-site interview as a head coaching candidate.

The Raiders are so covert that any “insider” news regarding them has to be taken with a grain of salt.
Al is probably having secret meetings with coaches in Piedmont like he did w/ Gruden.
January 14th, 2009 at 7:49 am
Didnt that billionair investor also deny it. If thats the case then where the hell did Mort get this crazy story from????

I wonder if he checked with the Raiders first about this story?

repost:
I’m guessing Al Davis meets with Bates today and Gilbride tomorrow …
the good news? a lot of Raider fans feared that either Rob Ryan or James Lofton would become the next Raiders HC after the season ended. Ryan was given permission to leave early and Lofton was canned. Maybe loyalty isn’t everything to Davis anymore? It’d be nice to have some coaches that actually produce. With the exception of Washington & Lal, hopefully the new HC will get to fill out the rest of the coaching staff?
January 14th, 2009 at 7:59 am
John Clayton seems to think that Tom Cable will return as HC next season for the Raiders. said Al Davis respects him and thinks highly of him.
My guess is that since the rooney rule has been met, unless Gilbride blows Al Davis out of the water in his interview tomorrow and makes minimal demands, Cable will be named HC very soon. I’d say sometime between 1/16 - 1/23.

Jason Jones (Sac Bee) writes:
The report cited former Raiders’ employee Mike Lombardi’s site, nationalfootballpost.com, that the Raiders wanted to interview Moss about being their defensive coordinator, but were denied permission by the Packers.
Teams cannot forbid assistants for interviewing to be a head coach. Moss interviewed with the Raiders Monday.
Just checked in with the Raiders about reports that James Lofton has been fired as wide receivers coach.
Senior executive John Herrera said Lofton is still with the team and that it would be up to the next head coach to decide what capacity Lofton would be used in.
So I asked if that meant whoever the next head coach is could keep Lofton as receivers coach if he chose, Herrera said reiterated that Lofton would be used in whatever role the new coach wanted.
It sounds like Lofton, who probably had the hardest job of any position coach on the Raiders in 2008, will earn his pay by not coaching receivers. Because he is still under contract, he could be reassigned in the front office. That’s what happened to Charles Coe when Lofton was hired.
Herrera would not confirm that quality control assistant Sanjay Lal would be the new receivers coach. Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reported Lal signed a two-year
extension and would be promoted to receivers coach.
January 14th, 2009 at 8:07 am
so will James Lofton be retained as a scout, quality control assistant or TE coach?
January 14th, 2009 at 8:09 am
Chargers coach Norv Turner got rid of four assistants on Tuesday, two days after San Diego was eliminated from the playoffs by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Secondary coach Bill Bradley and tight ends coach Clancy Barone were fired. The team said offensive line coach Jack Henry and assistant secondary and quality control coach Kevin Ross will not have their contracts renewed when they expire in February.
Turner didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

LOL. Norv has got to be sweating right now

I read this entire article on another website yesterday, way to cut and paste Jerry! It blows that we’re losing Schneider, our Special Teams rocked this year, but that, hopefully, was due to the talents of Justin Miller and the emergance of Jonny the beast Higgins, more than the coaching of Schneider.

Buddy Ryan (0 superbowls) comments on Gilbride (1-0 in Superbowls) “He has no business coaching in the pros. He should be selling insurance, he is a wimp.”
January 14th, 2009 at 8:23 am
My guess is that Cable has the job and is still working with Al to fill the OC and DC jobs. The process is clearly proceeding slower than expected as Cable deals with family affairs.
In their 4 hour interview, Cable likely told Al that of the remaining coaches, Schneider is Kiffin’s boy, Lofton is out, Lal is good, and Martindale is OK with him either as DC or LB coach(hopefully after Martindale detailed how he would stop the run better than Ryan). Martindale then OK’d the Washington hire.
HC Cable
OC Bates/Gilbride
QB Hackett
OL ?
WR Lal
TE ?
RB Willingham
ST ?
DC Martindale or Donatell
LB ?
DL Millard?
DB Washington
Def. Quality Brown
January 14th, 2009 at 8:27 am
Buddy Ryan was DC of da Bears when they won the SB,and most gave credit 2 Ryan not Dikta
January 14th, 2009 at 8:30 am
BSJ - Millard & Martindale should not be retained. The d-line and lb’s have been terrible since Rob Ryan took over. Just like Rathman & Schneider were “Kiffin guys”, M & M are “Ryan guys” … I hope these clowns follow Rob the Blob to Cleveland.
I’d rather have Donatell, Moss, Waufle or even Bob Sanders than those 2 losers. Maybe Brick Haley can coach our d-line unless he’s sold on LSU?
January 14th, 2009 at 8:32 am
Ditka is the reason the Bears were so good, Ryan was a stooge with great players.
January 14th, 2009 at 8:33 am
well they won it together.and Ditka had Sweetness
January 14th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Than Ryan went oHouston and punched Gilbride in the face…still “must see funny tv”.
January 14th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Jeff Fisher is the longest tenured HC in the NFL and Gilbride groomed Eli Manning and did all the playcalling as OC for the Super Bowl Champs last season. Now he’s being interviewed as a HC in 2009.
What happened to Buddy Ryan? became a bust HC for the Cardinals and got canned, never to return to the NFL again and that was 14 years ago. To his credit, I think Buddy (74) is 2 years older than John Madden.
Buddy, Rex and Rob are all a bunch up overhyped garbage coaches. I hope Rex Ryan does get the Jets HC job and inherits the Favre drama.
January 14th, 2009 at 8:47 am
Raiders need to stop being so wishy washy….its no way to run a organization. Perhaps in the 70’s/80’s that model worked and to the tune of 3 SB trophies to which only a handful of NFL teams have. That being said it shouldnt take 6 years of ineptitude to figure out your shyt stinks. AL figure it out or please move over the constant coaching changes with the same ole’ results points to the business model to which you have a kung fu grip on…..
January 14th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Mike Dikta remarks to Buddy Ryan after they had almost come to blows in the 1985 season “We can do it any way you want to. We can go right out back and get it on or you can shape your ass up.”
January 14th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Sith…..my mother could have coached those bears to victory. Nothing against Mike I love the guy but the bears were a wrecking ball of talent from the Offense and the Great D to a very good special teams. They were the real deal there D was stifling and the offense had Sweetness, A good TE and Great O-line…Fast playmakers at WR and a Cocky QB…Remember they made a Super Bowl Video before ever getting there. And they were calling themselves champs.
January 14th, 2009 at 8:56 am
Broncos are gonna hire Mike Nolan for DC, looks like they are moving to a 3-4. Looks like they are not sure who stays on there staff but would like to see either Dennison or Bates on next years Raider Staff. Bobby Turner would be a great pickup at RB’s Coach.
January 14th, 2009 at 8:58 am
Mort likes to stroke the shaft and massage the ballz when he gives head. But he doesn’t ask for the priviledge. He just does it.
January 14th, 2009 at 8:59 am
The good news about our present situation is that our needs are painfully obvious.
Invest our first three picks in April on our lines.
Those that talk about a WR need or the importance of playcalling etc. may have a point if we had even a glimmer of hope getting to eight wins in a season the past six years. We have not even come close and it has not been because a lack of skill position talent(see Kerry Collins).
The coaching process is important only in that there is SOME continuity. Cable will provide that. Lal staying represents more continuity.
The Gilbride intereview is just a way for Mr Davis to find out about the Giant’s offensive strategy.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:00 am
would like to see either Dennison or Bates on next years Raider Staff.
***
DT42: Bates & Dennison would be no brainers if Cable remains HC and we keep the zbs. This would be good for not only the o-line, but for JaMarcus’ development
January 14th, 2009 at 9:00 am
Doomed, doomed, and double doomed. Teams genuinely trying to improve are hiring high profile GMs to run things. Paoli to KC bodes ill for the Raiders, who just don’t get it. If Uncle Al (excuse me, “Mr. Davis”) won’t relinquish control NOTHING CHANGES. Everybody on this board who gets it please raise your hands.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Mort is a professional liar.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:04 am
I’m glad to see that OL men are falling out of trees. We haven’t been able to draft a good one since Art Shell and Gene Upshaw. There are no can’t miss players IMO. I think we draft best available. And yes that means if Crabtree or Maclin drop to us at seven we take them. When Dallas made there run in the 90’s it was a good defense with three great skilled players at QB,RB, and WR. That carried them to 3 Super Bowls with two different head coaches I might add. Get the talent who cares who the coach is (Barry Switzer) was a goofball in the pros. But, he won a Super Bowl with Aikman, Smith, and Irvin.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Charlie, if we build the lines that means better pass protection for JR. Running lanes for McFadden/Bush. Opens up Miller to be used as a receiving TE, not just an extra blocker. Same with Griffith, DMC & Bush, all have good hands coming out of the backfield. First 3 picks imo should be tackle, center & guard.
Something tells me however that our first 2 picks will be WR & DB unfortunately. Don’t we have enough young talent at those positions? Just need coaches to help develop that talent.

Drafting best available only applys when you have a foundation that keeps you around 8-8.
We must draft for need.
Our lines have been neglected for too long.
I can not accept that we can not find talent on day one of the draft better than Harris,Sands and Warren.
Calvin Johnson is much better than Crabtree and look what happened to Detroit. Without a good nucleus skill guys are WORTHLESS.

good point Charlie. other examples? Larry Johnson, Dwayne Bowe & Tony Gonzalex in KC. Steven Jackson, Torry Holt, Donnie Avery, Randy McMichael in St. Louis. combined 4 wins for the Missouri teams. Palmer, Benson, Housh, CJ #85 = 4 wins for the Bungles. games are won & lost in the trenches.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:21 am
Best college team in the country? Who Florida. The Raiders have been drafting Offensive lineman since 2003, with the overall #2 pick in 2004 selecting the supposed best O-lineman in the draft and the best center taht same year. And since then the Raiders have been drafting O-lineman. From P.McQ to Mario H. the Raiders have been attempting to better the O-line with drafted players. The same for the D-line. From Tyler B. to Trevor Scott the Raiders have been trying to draft D-lineman.

I guess my optimism stems from what I saw this year with the roster moves that were made during the season.
Allegedly Mr Davis used the Hall discharge as way to free up money to “build the lines”.
I do not know how it got to this point
(perhaps impatience by Mr Davis) but he has completely missed on Harris, Sands and Warren.
These guys are grossly overpaid and simply do not produce.
I am not big on free agents in general although an occasional signing can be helpful(Carlisle, Wilson).
Teams built primarily through the draft consistently outperform Dallas, Washington, Oakland and other big free agent participants.
I think Mr Davis is going in a different direction.

January 14th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Who’s running the ball in Detroit and who is throwing the ball in Detroit. Those guys are so incredible. Go look at Jamarcus Jersey in the last two or three games of the season. It was raining and his Jersey was as white as when he ran out on the field agains Houston. Who has a legit pass rush. We need a WR for Jamarcus another weapon. Our O-Line is gelling. IMO.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Gannon was a free agent. O and so was Plunkett. They turned out OK. I think it takes a mix of draft, free agency and a lot of luck. We have drafted linemen we just haven’t really gotten what we thought we were getting. Since Art Shell and Gene Upshaw.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:39 am
“Why didn’t someone at either ESPN’s television or online news desk remind Mortensen of that basic journalistic principle when he needed reminding?”
Good Question!
It’s not like Mortensen didn’t know better either. The guy has won 18 awards in Journalism over the course of his career. You don’t do that by not knowing or following the rules.
However when you become a cult of personality like he has it comes with certain privileges and you also acquire a bit of an ego. It may be that he doesn’t really have anyone there to keep him in check. A huge story like Al Davis selling a chunk of the team seems like it would have immediately required the proper phone call.
If he didn’t feel like getting the run around why not simply run the story using either of these media cliches: ‘allegedly’ or ‘the Raiders have not confirmed this…’
January 14th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Rockstar,
Post 18 was certainly not my preferred list. I would prefer Donatell or Waufle, and let him bring in his DL and LB coaches at least. I was just listing the most likely outcomes, unfortunately. I don’t see us hiring Moss — he’s not HC or DC ready, and anything else would be a demotion. His interview was proforma, but now Al can hire a white man at will.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Post 45
With a first pick stud OT like Jake Long, resign Carlisle and Grove I would agree.
We simply can not handle a Baltimore, SD or Pittsburgh with our present OL group.
The offensive line is the heart of the football team.
With our running backs and the continued development of JR we can move the chains, keep the ball and automatically make our defense better.
Getting improved line play on defense makes our present LB’s and DB’s better.
It all starts in the trenches and we have looked for a quick fix on the lines for too long(other than in the 2004 draft).
We need day one draft picks on the lines and we improve in the win column.

Why cant we go to paying 3-4 on defence? it works…
January 14th, 2009 at 10:04 am
I actually was going to list Dave Dalby and Don Mosebar (Visalia, CA) But, my real point was that we just haven’t hit on a good linemen for at least ten years. Barret Robbins had his issues but, was very talented. We traded Jim Lachey for Jay Schroeder that was brilliant. And I really loved Wizniewski and he does have a son in colleget that I would love to draft someday. But, we have missed and missed again since those picks. I really believe if we give this group a chance they can take it to a higher level. They really haven’t played that many games together yet.

There is no ‘we’. You don’t own any part of the Raiders. You are not part of the Raiders. You are just a person that thinks they are somehow partly yours because you got a t-shirt from Santa. You are a fan or a customer of a product, you are not part of the Raiders. If you don’t get a check signed by Al, you are just a loud mouthed bystander.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:07 am
And yes games are won most times in the trenches. But, if you don’t have any weapons it doesn’t matter how much time you have or don’t allow if you don’t have play makers behind them to do exactly that. Make plays it’s all a moot point.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Jim Lachey was the 12th pick in the 1st round in 1985 by the Chargers. Signed by the Raiders in 1988 and traded to the ‘Skins for Jay Schroeder. Terrible trade.

January 14th, 2009 at 10:28 am
I think Mort was right about this story, too. Jerry’s just trying to throw a bone to the Davis worshipers that make up for about 90% of his web hits. This is stupid. We’re coming off of our 6th straight failed season, and the Raiders are more concerned about the media misreporting a stupid interview (maybe, at that…) than they are building a team. That ought to tell you what’s in store for next year.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Johannes Mehserle will be a quality control coach for the Raiders when he gets outta jail. Al Davis likes to give people 2nd & 3rd chances…
January 14th, 2009 at 10:30 am
I agree, 408. Give the system a chance. But if all the evidence isn’t brought to trial? It’s common knowledge the police were destroying evidence right there at the scene. If the cell phone confiscations aren’t brought up at trial, then the system has already failed, regardless of the verdict and sentence. Those cops taking the cell phones is equally as disturbing as the shooting.

John Clay was perhaps the worst although Greg Skrepanak and Bob Buchowski(sp?) are not far behind.
The problem is we have to try. I agree that we need a blend of free agents and draft picks but we are WAY out of proportion especially on our lines.
Sands cast off
Warren cast off
Burgess often injured in Philly
Joseph cast off
Richardson,Scott developing day TWO picks
Kelly recovering from ACL
Edwards situational free agent
Henderson third round developing
Gallery solid day one pick
Grove often injured
Carlisle free agent
Green AGING free agent
Some may take exception to the Gallery comment but this is a very marginal group in total. It is the primary reason we are not competitive.

January 14th, 2009 at 10:40 am
I don’t understand why Jerry and some other Raider fans on here always talk about the last 2 games of the season. What about the 10 games prior? the Raiders beat the Texans & Bucs. good for us. It’s not like we beat the Ravens, Falcons, Panthers, Dolphins, Chargers or Patriots. All of whom (minus the Pats) were playoff teams. Texans & Bucs? not playoff teams, although both had better records than us. I’m not sure we can say the Raiders have turned the corner, because Norv Turner finished with 5 wins in his 1st season as HC too, but only managed 4 wins the following year and got fired. Now we must replace the ENITRE coaching staff and figure out what to do with Nnamdi/Shane.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:40 am
And while we’re at it, I’m always right about the Raiders. I’ll never forget all of the “you were right, MaddenRaider” comments I got after Denver beat us in week one and Kiffin was eventually ran out. Of course, you haven’t forgotten, either…

Ryan wanted to take Martindale with him when he left for Cleveland, but he remains under contract with Oakland. Two-time NFL coordinator Ed Donatell and Packers assistant head coach Winston Moss are the other candidates.

None of that happened. So you said the Broncos would win in the lst week of the season. You have a fifty fifty chance. You must have some dudes spooge cloggin up your brain dude
January 14th, 2009 at 10:51 am
Plus the Head Coach doesn’t appear to have any say at all regarding staff. Same ole shyt. The Key is, will we win 6 games next year. To avoid 11 losses 7 yrs in a row?
January 14th, 2009 at 10:51 am
Bo, do you think you’re going to get rid of me, or something? As long as this blog is open to the public, and as long as there are people stupid enough to worship Al Davis and admit it in here, I’m going to be here to make fun of them.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:51 am
MR, are you StrahanMan? Or have you only posted as MR here?
January 14th, 2009 at 10:51 am
The Raiders defitely need to focus on the OL this offseason. sounds like Al knows that too. When Deangelo HAll was cut he said Al Davis told him that the Raiders needed to focus their resources to the OL.
The twist in that is whick of these linemen can play ZBS.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:53 am
That was the first time I saw the entire video of the shooting. That was fuked up. No reason to pull his gun, stand over the guy and shoot him. None. Even if he didn’t mean to pull the trigger he should never have pulled his weapon in the first place, he was never physically threatened. Wow. That guy has to burn for what he did.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:53 am
What makes you think I want to get rid of you MR? Wow, you have a persecution complex. Of course, you crave persecution to reinforce your poor self image. And you work very hard here to get that persecution.
Actually, I have been asking for StrahanMan redux.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Bo, aren’t you taking this all a bit too seriously, though? I mean, this is really about me making fun of Al Davis and his worshipers, and you being offended. Little else. I guess you’re trying to distract people from that. I would too. Because it has to be quite embarrassing anymore to openly believe in Al Davis. There should be a proposition that doesn’t allow Davis worshipers to marry, or better yet procreate. We have enough retards on the planet.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Bo, did you study psychology? Or are you just an instant expert on the subject? You know, like gay sex.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Or will we even be running the ZBS?
January 14th, 2009 at 10:56 am
So with Jake’s ultra-shaky performance over the weekend, you gotta think the Panthers might be looking at drafting one of the top QB’s. If Stafford is there at 7 (unlikely) or they are keen on Sanchez, they could be a logical choice to trade down with. Maybe pick up a first next year, or at least their 2nd round pick this year, and still be able to pick-up either lines or D help with the first pick and have two second-rounders.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:57 am
I’m more convinced now that the only way to be rid of Davis is….his passing.
January 14th, 2009 at 10:58 am

But you can’t say the same, can you? You’re only doing what I already did. Following in my footsteps. And you’ll find my path has no gay sex in it. Just enlightenment and wisdom. You go my way, your IQ will start to increase and soon you’ll be making fun of Al Davis, too. Just keep trying to be like me.

January 14th, 2009 at 11:01 am
MR, you brought up the subject of posting under multiple names, which you have admitted to as StrahanMan. So it was your subject, and you were hypocritcal as usual.
And can you point to some evidence I am a “Davis loyalist”? The term itself sounds pretty ludicrous on its’ face, since Davis is the Raiders and we are all Raider fans.
In point of fact, there are many things I admire about Al as the owner/GM of my favorite team. And many that disappoint.
Kind of ironic that you suggest i am being too serious, when on a daily basis you attempt to turn an entertaining endeavour (Raider football commentary) into a vendetta against the HOF owner.

i can confirm we did:
1. al is in control. he did hire art shell and that bed and breakfast oc.
2. al is in control. he did interview sarkissian (he say “no thanks”).
3. al is in control. he hired lance kiffin (he was a liar).
4. al loves him some tom cable.
5. al is in control. al has decided not to resign namdi. we won’t even put a 2nd year franchise on namdi, but will let him walk. al gave t. kelly and turdell very generous contracts because it was the “ethical thing to do”.
6. can’t hire tom cable cause richie kotite hasn’t been ruled out as a candidate yet.
7. if richie kotite declines to be interviewed then we’ll stick with tom cable. i imagine cable will be named head coach sometime after the combine.
al davis is still very much in control. he is ringing his bedside bell at this very minute. catheter bag needs to be emptied fo sho.

Was it this year, Bo? Well, seemed like a long time ago. I guess I’ve matured a lot since then. But since you’re following in my footsteps by posting under multiple names, I hope you become as mature and smart as me some day, too. Let’s only hope.
BTW, congrats on the new screen name. “MR Licks Morts Nuts”. I guess if you’re going to be a troll you might as well be original. Hey, I’ve always said, as long as you’re entertaining. January 14th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Bo, it is well documented that “maddenRaider” is a liar and a putz. He is NOT a Raider fan. He claims to be so some of the bloggers here listen to him, but as evidenced above, he is not. All he tries to do is get everyone at each others throats, pit the Al Davis and anti Davis camps against each other and then post stupid and absurd posts under respected posters names to discredit them. Why would any interested serious Raider fan do that? You don’t do that Bo. No serious Raider fan does.
January 14th, 2009 at 11:14 am
And, it’s nice you would refer to Davey D as a hip hop thug. Last I checked, he’s never been convicted or even accused of committing any crime. So I don’t know where you get the thug label. Unless you think all black guys are thugs.
January 14th, 2009 at 11:14 am

Bo Schembechler Jackson:
MR (now MaddenRaider) is consistant. He trolls as other people on a daily basis and always talks about one of the following
1. Davis bashing/Kiffin promoting
2. racism. usually pro black calling everyone who disagrees with him a redneck
3. homosexuality. pro gay
4. predictions. tries to go out of his way to prove that he is right and everyone else is wrong
so if these topics interest you or anyone else on here, those are usually the ones that debate with him. This of course turns into insults, threats and lots of trolling. Anything he can do to try and make himself sound smarter than other people on here.

I can not accept that we can not find talent on day one of the draft better than Harris,Sands and Warren.
Calvin Johnson is much better than Crabtree and look what happened to Detroit. Without a good nucleus skill guys are WORTHLESS.

I have the Raiders drafting Jason Smith, OT Baylor in the 1st round.
Here is one scouts assessment:
He is a former TE and posses great speed and feet. Smith is arguably the most athletic lineman available in the 2009. He could play LT or LG in a zone-blocking scheme possesses the speed to get out and move to the second level very effectively. His days running routes is evident in his ability to pull and trap and his awareness of where the ball is going on screens. His speed and long arms make him an explosive weapon in space against linebackers and safeties. Technique wise, he has made huge strides this year as well.

=====================================================
INCORRECT:
Thuggee (or tuggee) (from Hindi thag thief, from Sanskrit sthaga scoundrel, from sthagati to conceal) was an Indian network of secret fraternities who were engaged in murdering and robbing travellers, operating from the 17th century (possibly as early as 13th century) to the 1830s whose members were known as Thugs.

A black man had just finished watching ROOTS and was inspired. He began to save up money in hopes to go back to visit his native home land. The land of his ancestors. His jar was full and he counted up the money twice to be certain he had enough for the plane ticket. He emptied his jar in front of the lady at the desk in the airport. They counted the money twice and came to find that he was a nickel short. Just 5 cents! so the man started asking people in the airport for some change. Finally he approached an old texan. He told the man “sir, please. all I need is 5 cents to go back to my country.” The texas man searched his pockets for change, pulled out a quarter and said “here ya go. Take 4 more with ya”

MR is no thug, regardless of the etymology. MR has a serious personality disorder that requires him to make people to treat him like sh!t. Then he feels at home with himself. He doesn’t have the self-assurance to be a thug, regardless of the pretensions he puts on.

Not ALL “blacks” are deserving of derision. Yes, due to socio-economic conditions, programming thru the daily media and reinforcement of unfounded biased and sterotypes we remain divided as people.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve met plenty of uncool people, of many ethnicities, but to lump socila groups togehter as one unseemly entity diminishes not only them but YOU…
Compassion, reason and logic.
Not just for “your kind” but for all.
January 14th, 2009 at 11:45 am
blacks were slaves in africa before they ever became slaves in america. they were chained up and sold by other blacks. white men paid for them, like material posessions. they were used as workers. cheaper than hiring other white men and how the owners treated them was at their own discretion.
for these reasons many black people hate white people. they tend to forget what life was like prior to becoming Americans and eventually being set free. If Americans didn’t buy the slaves, other countries would have. If the blacks would have stayed in Africa, they would have been treated much worse and may never have been granted freedom and the opportunities every American currently enjoys.

Interesting that many of the same people that were bashing Cable during the season are now singing his praises. And Because Big AL didn’t just automatically name Cable as the new HC he’s wrong. And why are some here so surprised that the coaching staff was cleared out? Most of the coaches were Kiffin guy’s/hires, enough said right there. Good point about Crabtree. He doesn’t have the speed of the other 2 WR’s that you mentioned. You are right, it is DeSean Jackson, the Cal Alum. He and Royal have wheels more than size. Crabtree is more like a Brandon Marshall type, good size and decent speed.
The Raiders already have a Royal/Jackson type of WR in JLH. I would be very happy with Crabtree. The Raiders would have to trade up to get him.

So I have to share this revelation, fact is I’ve enjoyed coming on this blog from time to time to talk Raider football, my team, always has been, always will be, and fact is in my part of the world there’s not a lot of Raiders fans, so its nice to find others to complain about the circus that is the Oakland Raiders…but what I can’t understand is what kind of coward would post anything on a blog, that already uses nicknames as someone else??? Seriously, why don’t you have the ballz to just own up to the comment? Some are funny some are out there, but man up. I mean think about it, a person with an already assumed persona, assuming another persona, so no one will know that the persona he really is, is the made up persona? I don’t know if that made any sense, but fact is “trolling” is just schizophrenic, and cowardly in my humble opinion, and quite frankly very sad if you think about what would possess someone to do something that foolish.

————————–
But of course, now this guys family has to get paid. As if 25 million dollars is going to solve it. Greed.
What is lost in all of this, is the fact the guy who got shot was indeed being a menace to society and endangering others by inciting a fight in a public place. But nobody mentions that.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Big AL is doing a solid job. No need to rush and make another Kiffin type mistake. On another note, most HC’s in the NFL do not select their entire coaching staff. Most are allowed to select most of the coaching staff just like with the Raiders, but very few are allowed to select their entire staff.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

We must draft for need.
Our lines have been neglected for too long.
I can not accept that we can not find talent on day one of the draft better than Harris,Sands and Warren.
Calvin Johnson is much better than Crabtree and look what happened to Detroit. Without a good nucleus skill guys are WORTHLESS.
^ Exactly….both lines need to be addressed LT/RT and Center and a beast of a DE and DT need to be added. I think there will be enough WR depth in this years draft class maybe grab one in Round 2-4.

The personnel might be closer than you think. Kelly and Sands would be decent rotating in the middle. I always thought that Sands would succeed as the NT in a 3-4 just because of his size. Warren would suffice as well.

January 14th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
What I cant believe was that they all three were healthy all year. I remember when we were all talking at the beginning of the season about how crazy it was only having three (decent) DT’s on the roster Kelly, Sands and Warren and I am surprised that they played all season long I think warren had a torn bi-cep muscle but was only out for a week or two.
I give Kelly credit for staying healthy and I imagine if we had two or three more guys to play DT that we could rotate in and out like the Giants do those three we had would have played better and had more juice at the end of the game.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Why are we even discussing the possibility of our defense switching to a 3-4. It’s simply not possible with the personel we have. We would need at least 5-6 additional/different players to even institute it.

You need a creative DC if your going to implement a 3-4. You can’t just change and expect it to work. A good 3-4 D has many different looks (think of B-More and lining up 350 LB Ngoti as a LB sometimes for example) and different blitz packages. We don’t have good blitzing LB’s, only 2 worthy LB’s in general, and Sands and Kelly would not work as a NT. Seems like it would take years to implement a 3-4 plan with our current talent and coaching.
January 14th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Switching to a 3-4 base without the proper personnel would be an exercise in FUTILITY for the defense. They would be confused and the run defense would probably get worse.
Ryan already tried that when he was first hired and the old man didn’t draft the right personnel or sign the right free agents to play a base 3-4.
Ryan had to play Warren Sapp as a 3-4 DE for crying out loud?!? LOL Terrible!

Warren does a pretty good Jerry impression. What’s with $95 a ticket though? I know that lawn seats are $35 but I can’t stand the Shoreline as it is and I despise their lawn area.
Warren Haynes is also touring with the Allman Brothers this spring. The Allmans are celebrating 40 years as a band this year.
If I had to choose I would take the Allman’s over the Dead but I’m still not sure if the Allman’s are coming out West, they rarely do anymore.

Ngoti usually only drops into coverage on zone blitzes. It may take time, but a 3-4 base D is not entirely out of the question. Plus, I say with a sense of tradition, that the 3 Super Bowls that the Raiders have won, they did with a 3-4 base D.
If you couldn’t tell, I tend to prefer the 3-4 base D. Maybe I’m biased but a guy can dream.

An 8-8 record could take the division next year (again)! If we can get someone like Bates in here who will work with Russell and the receivers all offseason, now has never been a better time to rise up.. Norvel and the chargers are going to be worse next year. Same as Denver. Chiefs are rebuilding. I’m not going to hold my breath, but there has never been a better time to take the division.

^^ Thats where the mind screw of Brayton came into play as well. Playing him as a standup 3-4 OLB??!!
Ryan was forced to do so, because he didn’t have anyone that can play the position. Once again, he didn’t have the right personnel because the old man didn’t know what he was doing.

Nice to see some talk about the Dead, but as a point of clarification, there is no Grateful Dead without Jerry. Now they are a cover band even if most of them are covering themselves. Not that that is bad, just sad. Now every show is a Bob show, and Bob Weir has no soul.

Dakota,
I think Al Davis is picking all of the important assistants this year. He’s already picked the receivers coach and defensive backs coach. He is interviewing people for both coordinator positions.
Robiskie’s network of assistants means nothing here. Al Davis will hire a head coach after he finishes building the staff.
In reality, the head coach in Al’s system has four roles:
1. Public relations (post game pressers etc…)
2. Offseason events manager (Oversee training camp, mini-camps, and other events)
3. Manage practices
4. Make sure right preparations are made for game day (curfews, pre and post game speeches etc(

I would be ok with that, except give me at least a 1st round pick in the mix. Nnamdi commands that and Huff is a former first round top 10 pick. I am still holding out hope that the Raiders re-sign Chris Johnson so I’m not sure Brown needs to be in the equation. I’m still of the thought process to give Huff a shot at corner.
Just give me Sheppard and a bunch of picks including a 1st rounder. Although the Eagles 1st round pick will be a late pick unless the Eagles trade up first.
You are probably right about Dawkins.

What kind of out of whack owner trades for and then signs an outsider who sucks in man coverage to a lucrative contract without trying to give that money to the homegrown product like Namdi who is a better corner??
Old stubborn man Al Davis thats who!
Ridiculous….
________________________________
You know I can’t stand Al Davis, but maybe Nnamdi had already informed the Raiders of his intentions of not re-signing with the team and Al wanted to lock up his replacement?
Who knows.
Hopefully we can keep Nnamdi. The way I look at it, if a team holds the franchise tag over your head and at the same time makes you a lucrative contract offer and the team refuses to trade you, you almost have to take it.
If you don’t take the offer and then play for the franchise tag amount and get hurt you lose big time. Nnamdi gets $12 million for the franchise tag, but leaves $22-28 million dollars in guaranteed bonuses sitting on the table. That means he would lose $10-16 million off the top if injured.
If he refuses to sign the franchise tag and the contract offer and sits out, he would lose a minimum of $12 million. He would lose the injury risk, but his reputation would be harmed and he would never make up the $12 million in his next contract.
The only way Nnamdi wouldn’t sign with us if offered a huge deal is if he is just so fed up with the Raiders he would rather play for another team and lose $12 million just on general principle. That would take one heck of a strong person to leave $12 million on the table.
I think that right now he wants out and his agent is telling him to go on the NFL Network and act disgruntled and all that, but at the end of the day if Al says here is a contract, if you don’t sign it we are going to tag you and we will not trade you, then nnamdi is going to stay here.

Good one KK, calling AL a rascist by (once again) mentioning an allegiance to naziism…and once again showing just how ignorant your statements are. There isn’t a logical person anywhere who would say Al Davis is rascist.
For diversification, opportunities, and equal treatment, AL’s record far outpaces any owner/GM/coach/front office in ALL of the sports world.
KK — your blind stubborness about AL makes it impossible for us to take most of your opinions seriously. Your NON-arguments = throwing anything in to chum-up some action (regardless of its veracity) and hoping someone debates an un-winnable subject (once again). Mature.

I saw the Nnamdi interview on the NFL Network last night and aside for expressing his feelings about seeing what he would be worth in free agency, I was surprised by the LACK of negativity. He was upbeat about what the Raiders did the last 2 games and wanted to see what they did with the Head Coach. Not exactly what he would have said if hehad a closed mind on returning. If he wanted out, he has the opportunity to express it and he did not.

IDIB,
Yeah, obviously Nnamdi will be able to feed his family, lol, but the risk is real. If he signs that franchise tag and gets a major knee injury he can kiss the huge deal goodbye, and although any one of us could live the rest of our lives on the $5 or $6 million Nnamdi would receive from the franchise tag (after the IRS takes its pound and the agent takes his commission) if nnamdi lands the $22+ million in a long term deal that could make a real difference for generations and generations of his family.
Is Nnamdi willing to risk that? He might, but I sure as hell wouldn’t.
Personally, I think C. Wood whispering in Nnamdi’s ear about how great it is to play for an organization that has class and is run in a professional manner might be the biggest reason Nnamdi wants out.

The Raiders still finished with 5 wins, despite 2 HC’s, 3 play callers, the benching of Huff, Routt, Curry, Harris, etc and the midseason release of DeAngelo Hall. Plus both FB’s and our top 2 WR’s landed on IR pretty early. The Packers had NONE of those issues and only managed 6 wins. They couldn’t stop the run either. Now they fired the entire defensive staff. The grass can’t be THAT much greener in GB can it? plus it’s stinking cold there. Too cold for JR to play, that’s for sure!

A good portion of NFL teams are searching for coaches, from HC all the way down the ladder. This is an annual thing for most teams that miss the Playoffs.
Half (yes, half) the teams in the NFL have as many on-field question marks as the Raiders have right now — not last season, but RIGHT NOW.
What the team is going through is not unusual…just repetitious because we haven’t made the Playoffs in so long (yes, KK, we know why).

HayesDaze,
Sorry, I don’t think what the Raiders are going through right now is usual by any means. Name one other time where a team has gone through this many coaching changes in such a short time span. It is unprecedented. It is a mess on a grad scale. Trying to minimize it is ludicrous. No other team is going through what the Raiders are right now. Other teams have normal problems, you know, like the coach hasn’t worked out after a three year stint. That is not the case in Oakland and you know it. We have burned through way too many coaches and the team was placed in the hands of someone clearly not qualified to be an NFL HC and now he might be our best option! We are in it big right now and unless Al can pull one out of his hat then we are going to be down for a while.
January 14th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Crimedog — I’d take Calvin Johnson from those losers in a heartbeat…
January 14th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
This years draft will be interesting due to the lack of a real can’t miss number one college player.
After watching Bradford in the BCS Championship game, I think Detroit will have a real tough decision to select a QB, even if Bradford stayed out, or select a OT to build in, then out, at the OL and take the best player at the position you want to build first.
Bradford definetly needs to hit the weight room, and his foot speed is not great. On the plus side he has great footwork and has the ability to play under center or in the shotgun, his familarity in a pro offense is very evident. The timing routes he had down real well. In the shotgun on championship game night he starred down his receivers.
The quickest fix is to build your OL or DL and find a QB in the later rounds.
Tebow has decided to stay in school, good move his QB skill and overall footwork in the pocket are in need of help. His heart and desire can’t be questioned, I see him as a tight end if he doesn’t improve the skill at QB.
The Detroit selection will definetly move the board at this year’s draft to be not as predictable as in past years.
The Raiders will need to entertain any offers to move down for more picks. In the past the seven spot in the draft have made moves to trade down and still target a player who they think will probably be there.
I looked at the draft trade chart and if we swap with a team at number 14,13,or 12 we would receive their number one pick as well as a second round pick between 42 thru 45. Our second pick would be at number 38.
January 14th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Yeah but they say it looks like Jason Smith has the build to put on about 20 pounds of muscle. You can’t rule people out cause they played at a small school. Jerry Rice played at a small school. He is a converted tight end so you know he has the athleticism to pass protect. Also, no one can project if someone is going to get injured or not. Williams had some pre-existing injuries but the Bears drafted him anyways which was a mistake. To my knowledge, Smith has no pre-existing injuries.

We may be in it deep, but why does it mean it’s going to stay that way? Just because AL’s at the top? Entirely too simplistic — there are entirely too many variables involved.
If AL brought in every Playoff GM, coach, and player left in the hunt right now (and gave them full autonomy), it would still not guarantee a Playoff run next year. Too many variables.
There is NOTHING in a 5-year-old record that shows where this team and its players are right now — it shows where the team WAS. Anyone who didn’t see the improvement the last few months just didn’t see the games.
It’s possible (not necessarily likely, but possible) that this team can dramatically turn it around like any other team in recent memory. The fact they’ve fallen short isn’t lost on me — but I’d rather fight until things get better than to quit. And I know AL’s got that same kind of fight in him.

This is why I have mentioned earlier that we should trade Nnamdi to someone like New Orleans or Houston. New Orleans desperately needs help in the secondary and Dunta Robinson’s contract is almost due up. In return, we could get their 1st and 2nd round picks. This would allow us to give Chris Johnson a decent contract and draft a replacement CB in the draft.

The Nnamdi trade would net us at least two additional draft picks besides my scenario if we moved down the draft 3- 5 spots.
I have no clue who would want to trade up as of yet, the hype of the draft will start in April, we may have a good idea what some of the other teams needs are after free agency.
The trade of Nnamdi will net us two first round picks and and if we move down we will have a extra second round pick, in this year’s draft.
January 14th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
what good is trading Nnamdi?? Al will blow the picks on the fastest DB’s available..
January 14th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Dell — I’m all for moving down to grab an extra pick or two, but Nnamdi’s not the one to do it with. Give Chris Johnson the moderate starter’s salary he deserves, but losing Nnamdi instantly makes the defense take a step backward. There are better ways to get better, even if it means Nnamdi gets franchised again.

I was responding to CrimeDog, I don’t want to see the Raiders trade Nnamdi. The franchise tag is only which is left to try and sign him or direct a trade to be compensated for his talents.
The possibility is he is franchised again at $12.5 million and lose him for 2010 with no compensation or try to work on a long term deal.
Pretty critical to me to find out what he decides in a month and what direction he wants to take.
Dakota had a great comment above this post on the tough decision Nnamdi has to make.

^^Usually teams FIRE the GM after the 3rd season of that crap. To bad Al can’t just retire.

Your logic has no facts, let me give you one GM that lasted 20 years never won a playoff game, and had a worst draft record than Davis, any guess.
Carl Petersen KC Chiefs.
^^
Queefs have sucked most of that time, especially when they were stupid and got rid of Marty, which was good for the Raiders actually.
Matt Millen stayed to long as well.
If a team doesn’t show improvement over a 6 year period and then GM or personnel man is still around, then it is pretty damn obvious that the GM or personnel man need to go. Coaches can only take the full blame for so long.

Do you think Al is going to hire Cable, but just wants to stir the pot a little with the Gilbride interview? Al is conniving enough to pull something like that off.
January 14th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Who knows? Maybe Cable will be the highest-paid OC in the league, a la Jason Garrett, working for Gilbride?
Naaaaa
January 14th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
LA Raider - We have already have a Head Coach. Al hasn’t announced it to the media yet but who cares?
January 14th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Fire Al! Raider fans are desperately in need of a qualified GM.
Please, Mr. Davis. Do it for the team. You are running it into the ground.
Then go on a nice long vacation and relax a little, because things will start looking up immediately.
January 14th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
KK some of you would try to have us believe this little old man in a wheelchair is coaching the team too.

L.A.Raider,
Why do you ask so many questions, but don’t give any answers? You are a wind bag, probably from Tracy just like your buddy.
Have a take, give somthing, instea of just asking a bunch of silly questions like a clown.
It is folks like you who ruin this site!

Bud Adams as GM has not won a championship since 1961 and nobody is complaining about him and how he has mismanaged the Oilers/Titans, you anti-Davis shills are lame fans. Go root for a team thats winning right now and save us all the b.s.
January 14th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
what can we do? we are going through the worst time in raider history.but we are a hardcore fan base “THE RAIDER NATION” the real nation, before ESPN started naming every fanbase a nation ex.redsox. anyways,this wont last forever we’ll be back and when we do i’ll be the biggest jerk to all who laugh at us now;
January 14th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

January 14th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Oh, and Mort sucks. But John Herrera is a documented liar (just like Lane Kiffin), so working with the raiders must be tough for mediots like ole morty boy or even our own JMac.
Wonder why so many people around the Raiders feel like they have to communicate false information? Any thoughts Al?

January 14th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
anyways, i’ll repeat myself from the past couple days revamp the o-line because next year we face 3 of the last 4 teams left in it now plus nyg and dal who know how to rush the passer

Dakota does not have any intelligent input either, only Davis bashing. Have any of those three ever played the real game in real life? I doubt it.

You ungrateful punks….get it through your thick skulls. Beanie Wells RB from THE Ohio State University is going to be MY first draft pick this year! Nice of you to drag yourself out of bed at 7:30am, to let us know that the tool Mort did the right thing. And kissed Al’s pinky rink and licked Amy Trask’s boots. (Don’t need to know what he did to John H.)
Now, where is our FIX!
January 14th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Mort got caught in classic Al Davis misinformation, big deal.

of what i hear, that new stadium in l.a. or city of industry is really happening, i work near it
January 14th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
The league won’t stop Al from getting the Raiders out of that thuggish area of Oakland, watch and see.
January 14th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
GHOST TO THE POST!
January 14th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
the raiders will not win again until al passes the team on to his son and a gm along with real head coach are hired.
i will not waste another cent on this team until this happens. giving up my season tickets.
January 14th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
especially after goodell visited, yeah maybe. but the l.a. coliseum area isn’t great either and i think the more powerful citizens of l.a. are against the raiders coming here because they dont appeal to the snotty upper class people who have the most money.but l.a. is still raider city, if you drive around here you’re guaranteed you’ll see a raider sticker on a car
January 14th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
i’ll spend my 200+ plus dollars on the nfl ticket superfan and alot more on kush and beer

New post,… WE HAVE A HEAD COACH!!
January 14th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
L.A. sure is a Raiders city. But, they can’t do L.A. Coliseum Part II…
If they had a state-of-the-art facility in a cleaner and more family/tourist-friendly area of L.A., the Raiders would probably sellout every game in a stadium of 63,000…even when not winning.
January 14th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
weed is not a drug
January 14th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Tom Cable is still listed on the Raiders web site as interim head coach but has no contract and so is Lofton.

Please wake up and remember if you can’t protect the quarterback (offensive line) or get to the other teams quarterback (defensive line), stop drafting defensive backs, running backs and quarter backs. If you can’t stop the run (defensive line) or run the ball (offensive line) you aint gonna win! BUILD FROM THE INSIDE OUT AND STOP LOOKING AT THESE GLAMOUR POSITIONS! DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS - Steelers, Titans, Ravens, Eagles and even the Cardinals defense are really good!
