I was present at the meeting and one consensus was on putting all, or most,
transportation funds on Mass Transit,
after taking care of highway repair and maintenence.
Congestion was seen in its dying throbs,
supported by the yearly drop in gasoline consumption
in spite the continued rapid growth in population.
The yearly drop in gasoline use was supported by
new data on the quarterly drop in gasoline sales,
every quarter sold less gasoline than the previous one.

The other notable point was the interest and emotional support for special issues
among the many present (about 100?).
Very well run meeting in a highly charged atmosphere.
It could have run another 2 hours.

BART later announced a record 100 Million users in its last Fiscal Yearm ending 25 June.
And new weekly record of 2.133 Million
and new Saturday ridership record of 229,583, on March 3.

they will ask who was dumb enough to believe sprawl could go on forever. they will ask who thought disincentive transit fares amd highway promiting land use policies were sustainable. and maybe they will be asking why it took so long to wise up.
