BART is in a rare postion of advising riders this weekend that they might be better off driving their cars rather than taking BART trains between the Lafayette and Pittsburg/Bay Point stations. Starting at 9 p.m. tonight, a track construction project  will delay passengers at least 10 minutes and possibly up to 30 minutes if they’re traveling east of the Lafayette station.

The service delays are the last significant disruption that customers can expect as a result of the Contra Costa crossover project, BART officials said.

When finished next year, the x-shaped tracks between Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill will improve on-time performance and reliability of trains on the Pittsburg/Bay Point line.

As for this weekend, BART advises customers to begin and end their train trips at the Lafayette BART station if they can. Otherwise, be prepared for slower train east of Lafayette and allow extra time for the delays, they say.
