AC Transit is calling off plans for a third service cut this year after a new contract settlement was reached in arbitration to save the bus system $38 million over three years.

The three-year deal, reached Friday and announced Tuesday, enables the AC Transit board this afternoon to call off another service cut that was scheduled to go into effect in mid-December. Click here for a story on the deal and here for an AC Transit press release on it.

The board meets at 3:30 p.m. today at AC Transit headquarters to rescind  the service cuts.

The new contract doesn’t end all AC Transit’s financial problems. But for AC Transit riders hit with two service cuts already this year, the news amounts to an early Christmas present.

Remember how BART also went through heated contract talks last year before both sides reached a settlement that included union concessions to save money.
